NINERS’ NOTES
April ~ 2020
Vol 21~Issue 4
Editor ~ Maria Byers
Dear SaddleBrooke Lady Niners
I had a dream the other night. It was a doozie. It was a Tuesday, the sun was shining,
we were playing SaddleBrooke. I had a hole in one on #2. After the round, in the
Road Runner, drinks all around, Cobb Salad, ranch on the side, iced tea (light ice,
extra lemon). Lots of fun that day.
THEN, I woke up and realized that it was a dream and that we were all still hunkered
down in our homes. BUT, with time and patience, I am sure that the dream will
someday come true (well, maybe not the hole in one) but the rest will come back to
normal.
Taking a walk yesterday I was heartened to see very special people walking ahead of
me - they had chalk and every so often stopped, bent down, and wrote something
happy and inspirational on the pavement. “Hang in there”, “We love you”, “We are
all in this together”. I thought then, as I do now, we are fortunate to be where we are,
surrounded by others.
May this all end quickly. Be well, be safe, support each other. Anyone in need, please
reach out - we can all be that Hole In One to each other.

TEMPORARY GOLF CART RULES
March 13, 2020
In an effort to adjust to the current situation regarding the COVID-19 Virus, the current restriction of a maximum of 2 golf carts per foursome has been temporarily suspended until the end of March. The suspension will be re-evaluated at that time.
Only 2 carts may be on the golf course turf at any one time throughout the round of golf. The third or fourth cart in a foursome must remain on the golf course cart path.
Note: If you choose to use this option when you play please notify the starter of your intentions.
Thank you for your cooperation
Scorecard 101 Each of us has an opportunity to make the work of the tournament chair go much more smoothly by doing a
good job on the scorecard. I have a scorecard pictured below that was not used on March 17 because of canceled
players. I have inserted scores for Edie. She had a very good round.
My first request is that the numbers be legible. It can be difficult to determine between a 5 and a 3 or even a
wavy 7. If you are the player keeping the scorecard, please make sure the numbers can be read.
Secondly, complete the scorecard. If you need to use a calculator, we all have them on our phones, please use
it. If the scorecards are completed in each cart, and then compared, there is less chance of an error. The
handicap needs to be subtracted to give the net score.
We are trying to give you the pops on the scorecard. Please use them. We are to pick up when we reach Net
Double Bogey. That means that on a par 3 in the example above, Edie would reach double bogey at 5 and with
one pop she would pick up at 6. That is her maximum score for the hole.
I would like for us to sign the scorecard in the area at the bottom. I have a black rectangle on the sample
scorecard above to show where that would be. This means that the signatures are not on top of the printing. I
need to see what was printed on the scorecard when I am inputting the scores.
Thank you for using these requests to make my job easier.

Greetings Lady Niners!
This year’s Social Director is sending out best wishes as we are all hunkered down waiting for life to return to normal. Although it’s an oxymoron for the Social Director to be social distancing, I have already started thinking about the decorations for our June meeting. Some of you are thinking “she needs to get a life”, but in these times we need to do those things that bring us happiness and that does. I leave you with a thought from our favorite “Peanuts” character: Worrying won’t stop the bad stuff from happening, it just stops you from enjoying the good. Stay safe, stay healthy. Vicki Long
MUSINGS OF AN OUTSIDE INVITATIONAL CHAIR
I just finished The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah, a fabulous book, and I couldn’t help but feel
that the title described my committee life perfectly. Just a few short weeks ago I was riding high! I
was caught up in the excitement of posting sign-up sheets, chasing down checks and defining menu
options. Do I need a more full life? Well, most of it was fun. Where did it all go? How could I be
washed up in the first year on the job? Did I make a major mistake, did I miss a tournament? No, there were only two Invitationals before everything stopped. I was feeling a bit blue and too focused on the
virus invading our lives. I had the chance to experience the job for only a short time and I am grateful
for Oro Valley and the Highlands. Now nothing!
Then something happened; a neighbor offered fresh oranges (from a distance of six feet of course) and another produced a basket of the most beautiful grapefruit. This morning I’m heading out
to play golf with some of the wonderful Lady Niners. There will be more Invitationals and I will have
the chance to hunt for GHIN numbers and find out each of The Niners menu choices once again. In the
meantime I have the pleasure of golfing on our beautiful Saddlebrooke courses and waiting for our
amazing mountains to turn pink. There’s ALWAYS Grapefruit Margaritas! LIFE IS GOOD!

THOUGHTS FROM THE TREASURER
Hi Ladies,
I am writing this from deep inside the bank’s vault so I can keep an eye on our money during
these unusual times.
HAHAHA…just kidding.
We are so fortunate to be able to be outside on our beautiful golf courses enjoying the
sunshine, our friends and this game we love.
My wish for everyone is to be safe and stay healthy. SANDY WAGONER
LADIES CHOICE TOURNAMENT
POSTPONED
Kat and I are sorry to announce that our annual Ladies
Choice Tournament will have to be postponed! In light of
all the issues with the dreadful Coronavirus, we all felt it
best to not proceed as planned. We had our theme all picked out and were
ready to put up the sign-up sheet, but in our current situation we knew it
was best not to hold it at this time. Even if we all had 4 carts in our
groups, we would have just been handed a box lunch to take home, and
without being able to go inside with a group of our size we would have had
to find a spot outdoors where all 60-70 of us would have to stand 6’ apart
to hear who the winners were and then leave immediately. We will try
postponing it to the Fall, but with course closures due to over-seeding and
maintenance, as well as other re-scheduled events and pre-planned events,
we certainly can’t guarantee anything. We always look forward to this fun
event, but unfortunately we’ll have to wait to enjoy it!
