A PHOTO FROM OUR PHOTOGRAPHY S.I.G.

Submitted by Deborah Walker

Deb's assignment for the day was to take some photos at the Goulburn Railway Station and shewas lucky enough to capture this image of the XPT Country Link Train ready and waiting tomake its run back to Sydney.

When shown this picture the Course Leader for our Creative Writing Group said the railwaystation is a great place to get inspiration for stories when you are going through a bit of 'writer'sbloc' – just sitting there studying the passengers can give you enough material for weeks!

THE QUEEN'S BATON & BARBARA'S GREAT EXPERIENCEas told by Barbara Todkill

In March 2017 I received an e-mail advising that I had been nominated to be a baton bearer inthe forthcoming GC2018 Queen’s Baton Relay. The nomination was put forward by my son,Philip, outlining my many years involvement in women’s and junior girls’ hockey.

Philip’s nomination read “ “Barbara Todkill has contributed to the NSW Women’s hockey for more than 65 years developingplayers from age 6 to adult women. Barbara held the positions of President, representative captainand player, umpire, coach and selector and is a Life Member of Goulburn Women’s Hockey.Barbara has organised international teams to play in country NSW and also competed againstvisiting international teams. In 2008 Barbara was invited to officiate at the World Masters Gamesheld in Sydney gaining her Junior Judge accreditation. Barbara is also documented in “A Tributeto NSW Women in Hockey 1908-2008”, compiled by Barbara Osmond. A voluntary communityservice well done”.

I decided to accept the nomination thinking I would not progress any further. To my surprise Idid and progressed past the judging stage followed by a security background check to decide onfinal list of baton bearers.

COMETH THE DAY, THURSDAY 25 TH JANUARY 2018 – Much excitement with family andfriends. We arrived at Yarralumla Yacht Club in time to have lunch and to meet with the other 9participants in our segment, in the briefing room for instructions. After registration we weregiven our Participation No: - I was 035, boarded the shuttle bus and driven to the first drop offpoint. Starting time for me was 2.14pm on Flynn Drive and Kaye Plce. Each Batonbearer wasrequired to walk/run 200-250metres before handing on the baton. I was pleased I had a flatwalk. It was an exciting and proud experience, hard to believe, and over far too soon.

The BatonThe baton weighs 1.5kg, made of macadamia wood, has a GPS in its base, 3 digit alpha codes ofall nations and territories on the stainless steel stringer.- The Queen’s message window createda visual connection of the message
