Elizabeth Fry, The Angel of Prisons

    by Jeanne Véron

Elizabeth Fry was born in 1780 in Norwich, England and she

died on October 12th 1845 in Kent. Her mother, Catherine,

was a member of the Barclays who were the founders of

Barclay's bank. Catherine died when Elizabeth was only

twelve. Being the eldest meant she had to look after her

    siblings.

Elizabeth married Joseph Fry who was a banker when she was

twenty. Together they had five sons and six daughters!

Elizabeth visited Newgate (the most horrible prison in London)

in 1813. It was overcrowded and dirty. Children were locked

up there just because their mothers were in prison. Prisoners

slept on the floor and straw. Many of them were ill. Some

prisoners were so violent that the governor was scared to go

into his own prison! Elizabeth brought clean clothes for the

prisoners. She started a school and read from the bible. She

got women prisoners to knit and sew to earn money. She was

    taking action for better prisons.

Elizabeth met Queen Victoria and many other important

people to make sure that life in jail was a bit better. She also

persuaded the government to improve prison ships travelling

to Australia. She made sure that women prisoners found

    homes and jobs there too.

Elizabeth Fry inspired others by her example. She was a model

for other women. She wrote a book about prison reform.

EditorialHello and welcome to another issue of Totally

Tockington- the paper written BY students FOR

students! This week’s issue is about crime! Why

not start off by finding out what people would

steal if they could steal anything in Rachel’s

article, and then why not read Jeanne’s article

on Elizabeth Fry- the prison reformer? Then

    read Jacob’s article - a wanted poster - with a

twist! All this and more in this week’s issue ofTotally Tockington!

Thanks to Elizabeth Fry, prisons became less awful places.

Since 2001 a picture of Elizabeth Fry has been printed on

the Bank of England £5 note.

    Time for a joke:

Question: Why did the picture go to jail?

Answer: Because it was  framed !

An escapologist makes a living out of escaping from tricky

situations he or she gets into on purpose. Just imagine

how useful these skills would be to escape from prison!

I have been looking at some famous escapologists. These

    are my top five…

    Editor-in-Chief’s Comment

    A Life of Crime…

    By Alex Jacobi

When you read the next word I say, I want you to

think about all the words that come into your

head…crime. I bet you thought about murder, bank

robberies all that sort of thing and I bet you would

never associate yourself with that word, but right

now I’m going to give you a little situation that YOU

have to think of the right answer to.

The year is 1890, towards the end of Queen

Victoria’s reign, you have a tough life and are forced

to live on the street. You don’t have anything - no

money, no home, nothing. But all of a sudden, you

see a man walk by you and he isn’t any ordinaryman; he is an extremely rich man and you know this

because you have noticed his diamond encrusted

walking stick and fine leather top hat.

You see the chance of living a better life.

But what do you do? Do you :

     A) go forth and try to steal that top hat which

    might be worth THOUSANDS!!

    B) Or B) stay on the right side of the law andmake money working in the factory down the

    street?

The decision is YOURS! What do you do? You have

nothing but you know if you steal the hat then you

will surely be put into prison! Or worse…

Stay or steal, Stay or Steal? What would you do?

    1. Harry Houdini is a Hungarian- American Stunt

Performer and Illusionist. Houdini is famous for his

numerous escapes from straitjackets and handcuffs.

What I found most amazing is that he got handcuffed

and got a straitjacket put on, then got trapped inside a

giant can of milk, but he still managed to survive!

    Age: Died at 52 (1874-1926)

    Birthplace: Budapest

Profession: Pilot, Stunt Performer, Historian, Film

    Producer, Escapologist and Daredevil.

    The Great Escapeby Hannah Williams

Once there was a little bear called Sammy. He

lived in a dusty, old, charity shop. He had lots of

friends including Lilly the Barbie doll (who was

called Lib Lib for short), Zolly the Zebra, Bruce,

the dog and Shelly, the mermaid. Every night

Sammy dreamed he was in a warm home with a

loving owner and one morning he decided that he

    must do something.

He told Lib Lib, Zib, Brucy and Shel about his

dreams and that they should make a plan to

escape from the shop and find a loving owner

who would play with them. They would set off at

night but how could they escape?

That night Sammy got a toy fireman’s ladder from

the shelf where they sat and climbed down. He

went over to the counter and snatched some

paper, climbed up the drawers, grabbed a pen

and ran back up the ladder. He went back to his

section of the shelf (‘old, abandoned toys’, which

he personally thought was the worst title ever),

switched on a small light and began to plan.

The next morning he showed the paper to his

friends and began to put everything in place. He

put a shoe near the staff room, with some string.

He planned to grab the key from the staff room,

tie the string to the shoe to throw to the front door

so they could climb up the lock. He also found a

couple of cocktail umbrellas, just in case it

    rained.

Night fell quickly and all went to plan. They stood

on each other’s shoulders at the door and Lilly

slipped the key in the lock and opened the door.

Outside it was cold and wet and the path felt hard

under their feet. They ran for what felt like days

until they saw a house where they could see a

child’s bedroom through a window. They helped

each other through the letter box of the front door

and fell to the ground, motionless. It was not long

before they heard the sound of feet. A girl called

Georgina picked them all up, hugged them and

took them to her bedroom, where they remain to

this day, happy and content to belong in a loving

    home.

    If you were to steal

    something, what would

    you steal?

    by Rachel Shutt

I asked this question of a number of people andthis is what they told me. Personally, I admire

the answers Eva and Cole gave the most!

Honesty is always the best policy and stealing is

    NEVER right!

train bridge. It was carried out by fifteen strongmen with no guns led by Bruce Reynolds .

They were after the huge amount of moneybeing carried from the Royal Mail Centre inGlasgow following a Bank Holiday. Normallythey would have got away with £300,000 but asit was a Bank Holiday they stole £2.6 millionwhich is equivalent to £49 million today.

After the robbery, the gang hid at LeathersladeFarm.

They were later found by the police who foundevidence which led to eleven men being sent to jail. The ringleaders were sentenced to thirtyyears in prison and the bulk of the money wasnever found.

One of the train robbers, Ronnie Biggs, escapedfrom prison in 1965 and fled to Brazil where helived for thirty-six years. When he came back toBritain, he was arrested and put in prison but hewas released in 2009 because he was not well.

    Famous Criminals

    By Harry Mather

One of the most famous and well-known

criminals to have lived in our country was the

    highwayman, Richard, “Dick” Turpin. Dick

    Turpin lived in the 18th

      century from 1705 to1739.

Dick Turpin is best known for highway robbery

where he would hold up the stagecoaches that

carried people around the country. Highwaymen

would steal money or valuables from the people

on the coaches. Although Dick Turpin is

remembered for this crime it was only at the end

of his criminal career that he was involved in

    highway robbery.

Turpin was part of a group of criminals known

as the Essex Gang who stole cattle and deer.

The gang not only stole cattle but also attacked

farms in the countryside where they frightened

farmers and their families into handing over their

    money and valuables.

At the end of his criminal life, Dick Turpin shot

and killed a man who tried to capture him. For ashort time after this crime, Turpin moved to

Yorkshire and used a different name to hide his

identity but was arrested for stealing horses and

imprisoned in York castle. The local magistrates

found out his real identity and when he was

found guilty of stealing horses, he was

sentenced to death and was executed on 7th

     April 1739.

In the years after his death many untrue stories

were told about Dick Turpin including a horse

ride from London to York in less than a day.

This did not take place even though Turpin

owned a fast horse called Black Bess. It was

another highwayman who made the journey

long before Dick Turpin was born.

Although there have been many stories told

about Dick Turpin and films and television

programmes made about him, the idea that he

was a sort of hero is totally untrue. Dick Turpin

    was a very unpleasant criminal.

    Incredible Ways of

    Escaping from Prisonby Archie West

A Prison escape is an act of an inmate

leaving prison through unofficial or illegal

ways. Here are some of the clever ways

prisoners have used to escape from the

    sentences which they deserve…

Kidnap a prison officer, swap clothes, go

    outside, exit prison gates.

Invisible Cloak – Harry Potter Style!!

      When transporting a prisoner, friends

hijack vehicle and help to escape.

Cut through steel bars, make way

through plumbing tunnel and use a make

shift rope out of bed sheets to drop down

    multiple floors on the outside.

Bribing/paying prison officers to help you

    escape.

After communication with friends on the

outside, get onto the prison roof where

friends will collect you via air transport.

    Eg. Helicopter

Failure to return after being allowed to

    temporally leave the prison grounds.

      Physical force, attacking guards with

    force, home-made or smuggled

    weapons.

Prisoners build make shift dummies tomake the guards believe they are in their

cells, usually in beds when they are not.

Fake medical condition, be taken to

hospital and try to escape on

    foot….doing a runner!

    Allens’ Animal Antics

    By James & Gemma Allen

    Culprit No 1

This clever crocodile managed to hijack a plane in the

Republic of Congo. On a routine flight to Bandundu from

Kinshasa, the crew of Czech L-40 discovered a passenger wasplanning to sell the croc illegally. But when the croc in a gym

bag suddenly decided that it was fed up of being in the gym

bag, it got out using its razor sharp teeth. It burst out of the bag

and started to wriggle around like a …well a crocodile, the

flight attendant panicked and make a mad dash for the cockpit.

It would have worked if the 20 passengers had not done the

same. The sudden shift of weight caused the plane to crash

into a house. This amazing croc appeared unscathed by the crash!!!

    Culprit No 2

In Indonesia there are gangs of monkeys that steal sunglasses, wallets

and mobile phones. They steal stuff because they want food. If you

give them food then they will give your property back.

    Culprit No 3

In America there is an aggressive owl terrorising a

park. In the last 2 weeks 2 joggers were attacked.

The park owners have now put a sign up saying “ An

aggressive owl lives here”. This owl has its own

    twitter account.

    Have You Seen This Man?

    The Escape from Alcatraz

    By Georgina Loring

Alcatraz Island, situated on the West Coast of America is one of the most well-known prisons in the

world. On the night of June 11th 1962, four men were planning one of the most iconic escapes in history-

the escape from Alcatraz. Before I tell you about the escape, I think you should know who these men

    were.

    Frank Morris (the ringleader)

Born in Washington on September 1st 1926, Frank Lee Morris was sent to Alcatraz with a sentence of

    14 years on the 3rd January 1960.

    John Anglin

On May 30th 1930, John William Anglin was born in Donalsonville Georgia. He was sent to Alcatraz on

the October 21st 1960 for bank robbery

    Clarence Anglin

Clarence Alfred Anglin, John’s brother, was born on May 31st 1931 and was sent to Alcatraz on January

10th 1961, also for bank robbery.

    Allen West

Allen Clayton West was born on March 25th 1929. He was sent to Alcatraz for car theft.

    How they did it

They started planning in December 1961, when one of the men found some discarded saw blades in theprison’s grounds. Through six months, they widened the ventilation ducts in their cells using the saw

blades, spoons that they stole and a homemade drill made from an old vacuum cleaner. When the ducts

were wide enough to crawl through, they found an unguarded corridor. They covered the vents with

cardboard when they weren’t there so no one would suspect their absence. They made papier -mâché

heads out of soap, toilet paper, paint and even their own hair! They put the heads on the pillows when

they were gone, as well as putting blankets under their blankets to make it look like they were asleep!

They made a raft out of over 50 stolen and donated raincoats sealing the edges together using the hot

pipes, and planned to inflate it using a stolen concertina. Then they climbed up shaft pipes and cut away

most of the rivets using a ventilation fan.

On the night Allen West’s ventilation grate was stuck so he didn’t get there in time. By the time West

had opened it, the others had left without him. The remaining men climbed onto the roof. Guards heard

a loud crash as they broke the shaft to the roof, but they thought nothing of it. They went down the 50

foot wall by sliding down a kitchen vent pipe. They then climbed over two barbed wire fences.

There is no proof of them getting to safety, but there are claims. What do you think? Do you think they

    ever made it to America?

    Famous Assassinations Crime Quiz

    By Ryan Hann

This week’s edition of Totally Tockington features articles on crime which leads nicely into my quiz for this

    week.

As assassination is when someone, usually in a prominent position, is killed or murdered by another

person. Throughout history there have been many assassinations and even more attempts which haveailed including Pope John Paul II in 1981 and the US President Ronald Regan also in 1981.

Julius Caesar was assassinated by stabbing in the first century so this crime has a long history! This

week try and see if you can research (or guess) and piece together the assassinations I have found out

    about.
