CllAlfGE OF WESTEIUI DX FORUM EDITORS -- PLEASE NO'I'E:

OUTGOING EDITOR: Bill Hardy, 2301 Pacific Ave., Aberdeen, WA 98520.Bill's final deadline in Aberdeen: Sat. 26 October.

NEW EDITOR (pending Board of Directors approval),Reid Wheeler, 5910 Boulevard Loop S.E., Olympia, WA 98501.

Reid's deadlines: Eacb Saturday beginning 2 November.

PATRICK IOUr'I'DI, P.O. BOX 843, SEASIDE, OR 97138-0843First off, I really enjoyed Gerry Thomas's forum in the 28 Septemberbulletin. I'll never complain about all the scratches and cuts I havegotten through the years working on my Beverages. I guess that goes

with the territory. You pay for all that DX you get, hi. It is funny- when you are out there and get into all the brambles and such, the

cuts don't really hurt as you are doing something you really want todo. It seems all worth it. If you got cut mowing the lawn that wouldreally hurt, hi. CJVB 1470 Vancouver, BC has done something to theirpattern recently. They now mix here with KEL~ Centralia (only 70 milesaway) during the day. I don't notice any difference at night. I hadwondered about it. Thanks for mentioning it, Bruce. Most of the

Vancouver, BC stations are regular here day and night. CHaM 1320 andCKST 800 aren't heard much during the day. CHaM has KXRO to contend

with, but they do make it in during the day in the winter at times.CKST is directional northerly so if I hear anything else on 800, exceptfor KPDO Portland (in the winter), it is CKOR Penticton. CKST is heard

at night with the NNW Beverage, though. CBU 690 is about thestrongest, followed by CKWX 1130 and then CHRX 600 and CKLG 730. CKNW

980 is also not bad off a northerly Beverage during the day. CFUN 1410is heard, but is weak. All three of the Victoria stations are heard,

. with CJVI 900 by far the strongest and CKDA 1200 the weakest. CKDAused to be a bit better on 1220, but bad KCCS Salem, OR ORM during theday. That's it for this time - good DX to all. 73, Patrick.

GAIT~, 2806 LDiCOLR, BURBANK, CA 91504 (818) 559-1500Hello. New info here is KMDY 850 in late September dropped all comedyand is simulcasting KNJO 92.7 adcon format. Call is still KMDY as faras I know. Also stations have new owner wbo may put a Spanish formaton 850. Talked with general manager a few days ago (today is 7 Oct.).Interesting on 960 now using KAPL call, probably means Apple Valley.Yes, I do think they're 5kw now. KJOI 540 still is favorite regionalstation to hear in car. Good reception in area of El Segundo andWestchester. A friend in Missouri tells me KIDS 1340 aired on 1 Oct.with kids type format 0700-1300. Too bad KICK isn't still on 1340 witholdies. KICK call now used elsewhere. Randy Stewart bad an interest-ing report in DXM 927. Here's wishing the San Jose Sharks a good firstyear. Pretty good network they have so far. Bill, good job as temp-oraryeditor. Hope more members report often. In addition to abovehome number, I also have (818) 846-5540. Usually am home 1900-2400Pacific time. Good DX everyone.

If you are acomputer owner I suggest you get a modem and subscribe to Prodigy. This service is available in a lot of cities with a local phone numberso you only need to pay their monthly service charge ($12.95). Part oftheir service is [-Mail. I am a Prodigy member (address MPNN49A) andaccept CDXR material via Prodigy. Also a nifty way to send tipsbetween members. Please keep in mind it is still cheaper to use the

LARRY GODWIN, 2390 CLYDES DALE LANE, MISSOULA, NT 59801

Greetings! 1 just received Radio West's current catalog, and orderedthe "Great Little Loop." It occupies only one cubic foot of space, andcovers 400-2000 kHz. The older 18" and 23" models are no longer

available; they covered SW as well as BCB. The BCB loop costs $121,including UPS. The address is 850 Anns Way Drive, Vista, CA 92083.Phone (619) 726-3910. As you probably know, Ralph Sanserino makes

these loops so we can be assured of quality. Conditions to Asia weregrand 22-24 September (see last week's DXWW), then deteriorated. I

haven't heard audio from any TP or DU stations since. I thoroughlyenjoyed Gerry Thomas's account of the Labor Day Beverage. Hope someonevolunteers to edit WDXR soon so Bill can do more DX'ing. 73.

NEIL ItAZAJlOSS, 332 RICRAJlDSON DRIVE, MILL YALLEY, CA 94941(415) 389-6064 (never after 9:00 on a weeknight)

Just moved from San Diego to the San Francisco Bay Area. I will be atthe convention at Monterey. I'm interested in organizing a Beverage

DXpedition to Ano Nuevo State Park (has been used by Bay Area TP DX'ersin the past) for Saturday night of the convention. I have enough wire

for two long Beverages. Interested DX'ers are invited to call De. Iwould prefer that there be at least a minimum of one Beverage perDX'ing setup. That way we don't have to split one Beverage to manyreceivers. I'm hoping to make the Newfoundland DXpedition that MarkConnelly is planning. I will miss DX'ing with my good friend Tim Hallfrom Chula Vista. 73 from KAZ.

BILL llAltDy, 2301 PACIFIC AVE., ABEllDEEII, n 98520

Great turnout this week! Neil phoned in his forum so it would makethis week's deadline. Hope you have a good turnout, Neil. GerryThomas's forum in the 28 September issue was fascinating. I could

sense his anguish about burying his Beverage wire and then stringing itinto the brambles - four hours of hard work - and not even getting touse it! Thanks, Gerry, for sharing a great story, and I almost hate toask what's next. I must give myself two sets of 100 lashes with thestiff penguin flipper: first, for putting "Change of Western DX Roundup

Editor. at the top of last week's column, which I've corrected thisweek (Nancy is still Roundup editor and she caught the mistake); andsecond, for listing 1490 Grand Coulee, WA as -KEYF. in the 14 Sept.WDXF, as veIl as Robert Wien's column on page 5 of that issue. They

are KEYQ, but their FH was KEYF years ago. KEYF is on 1050 in Dishmanand 101.1 in Cheney, WA. Thanks to Bruce Portzer for catching themistake. Patrick, I noticed a much stronger daytime signal into theU.S. from CJVB 1470 vhen Nancy and I camped near Nt. Vernon, WA on thelast day of vacation in August. with KAPS moved from 1470 to 660, CJVB

may have seized the chance to eliminate their null of Mt. Vernon (about60-70 miles from Vancouver). CKST 800 likely has a wide null of KGMI790 about 25-30 miles south. CHON 1320 supposedly nulls Aberdeen, butcan mix with local KXRO some evenings and is good after KXRO goes off

at 0300. Gary, per the newspaper clipping on KMDY 850 you sent me withyour forum, KNDY still has .Comedy Radio Classics. Mon.-Fri. 2200-2300local. Re your WDXR this week, why would KNDY or any other AM in ahigh-price real estate area want to add more towers?? Some stationsare lowering night power so they can eliminate towers and sell the

land! Larry, glad to hear Radio West is still around; I had wondered.I don't know if I'll get any more DX'ing done when Reid takes over as

WDXF editor in three weeks, but I'm glad he's taking over so that other

projects, including Almanac updaters, can get my time. It's been fun.Now please support Reid in this same fine mannerl 73,

Karl V. Jeter, 2115 Scarbrough Road, Stone Mountain, Georgia 30088Greetings! I recently renewed my membership in the IRCA, making

15 great years ~ontinuously as a member. A brief reintro: I am 38,and a single parent to Kevin, my 7-y~ar-old boy, and am self-employedwith a small engin~ering/drafting outfit at home. My DX career beganwhile in high school in Conover, NC in 1969, the same year I got myfirst verie from WCFL-Chicago. My current totals are 1841/1446 with44 states, 6 provinces and 21 countries verified. I concentrate ondomestic DX, but do try a little international DX every so often. Tothose of you with children, the following may 'be of interest. I beganto suffer from a loud buzzing QRM on the broadcast band that appearedat dark, and would last through the night. Cursing the new apartmentcomplex that now stands behind my house (-here my antenna farm used tobe), I immediately assumed the source of the, interference to be fromback there. I began investigating, and decided to check my house first;armed with a battery radio, I shut off the main power to the house, andthe buzzing stopped! Turns out the source was a little automatic nightlight (the kind that has a small photoelectric ce~~) I had recentlybought to use in my son's room! The brand is "Good Nite Light", lIIanu-

e factured by Intermatic, Inc. of Sprin~ Grove, XL, model no. GN-l.Needless to say, it has been returned for a conventional non-interfer-

! ing varietyI Has anyone else noticed what may he a new trend in AMprogramming? On 9/27, I was tuning around, and on 1100 kHz, I noticed

. audio from a local Atlanta TV newscast. Puzzled, I listened on, and at

break time, heard the following announcement: "This is Don Farmer, (alocal news anchor) and you're listening to Channel 12 Action News onCountry 11, WLBB, Carrollton". Other than the stations that rebroad-cast the audio of CNN Headline News (like WCNN-680), this TV/Radiosimulcast must be a new trend. Not much DX to mention in this youngseason, but what a start: heard KOKK-12l0 Huron, SD on 9/25 at about0658 briefly before peing buried by the WSBI-Static, TW sign/on. Ihave ~een trying for more, but not much luck; just a tiny piece ofKOKK the nextAM. It sure is nice to see thoseweeklyDX MonitorslGood DX, and 73's. (Karl, wasn't Don Farmer an anchor at ODe time onthe regular CNN network, perhaps six or seven years ago?--rce)

R.C. Watts, 4109 Graf Dr, Louisville, KY 40220-3016Sold some hawgs and went to the Monitoring Times Convention. Ran

a little short ~t a had 8 couple shoats 1. ~he trunk, just in case, which I was able to see to one of the BBa joints. Them people downthere use something called "plastic" to pay for things, just like theydo up North, and charge l5~ mace for a gallon of gas. Anyway, Knoxvillewas having its becentennia1 (whatever that is) so I was distracted by aspectacular firewaorks display over the'river on Thursday night (10/3).Hac a gcoc view ~ro~ the Hyatt Regency. Looked like a lot of bicen waSgoing on and I'm fer itl The Caribbean beacon-l6l0 was fair aoout 2000while ~ne A~lan~ic Deacon was way down in the QRM on l~iO. A~ 2~OO,TWR-800 vas very good with English news. So didn't hear anything ofnote. I stoF~.d by Renfro Valley on the way down 1-75 ana picked up acopy of the "itenfro Valley Bugle". It lists the stations that carry the"Sunday Morning Gathering" with broadcast times. You can probably geta sample copy from kenfro Valley Folks, Inc., Kenfro Valley, KY 40473.They also sell c1d progra~ tapes (unedited, 1960-1980). John Lair, thefounder, was a delightful ~~ back in those days. back to the conven-tion: highlights for me were a tour of WATE-TV6 and construction/opera-tion of W~CR shortwave in Nashville, presentation by George McClintock. He is GK of w~CH anc co-located sister station WNQM-1300 oS well as

Ernest Cooper, 5 Anthony Street, provincetown, Massachusetts 02657It's been three months and one hurricane since I last appeared

in these pages, so let's get oack in the ~imelight. Veries have comein from WPNT-820-lL (sent by the present WPNT(FM) in July for my 820reception back on 1/3/91 wlout a flupl, WlZA-1450-GA out 21 months;WwBH-1550-FL (ex-WCCZ); the brand new WVNE-760-MA (Leicester, pro-nouncea 'Lester'), WLPZ-1440-M£ and Cariboean Beacon-1610 to bringthe total to 4385, counting call changes but not frequency or powerchanges, the way virtually everybody counted them in my day. Bob andI took a second vacation this year, going back to a favorite spot ofours, Green Lake, Leeds, NY on 8/6 for two weeks. On awakening onMondey 8/19 we heard the news on the radio of Hurricane Bob, then 15miles S of Providence, RI, and it was pouring rain there in Leeds, sowe decided to leave right then and there, a day sooner than planned, and try to get home before the storm hit Province town. Figuring ahurricane generally takes aoout an hour to go 15 miles, we thought wemight be ab1e to get home before Bob (the storm) hit. Hal I am "aller-gic" to toll roads,so we were travelling East on US 20 and listeningto 6tocm reports, and not making very good time, so we decided to swingover to the Mass. Pik~ ~. the first available entrance to it, whichcame at ~orcester. The first thing we encountered was a toll booth, but the guy was st~nding outside it and waving us through andyelling"don't seopl Keep goingl" That we did, as the now heavy winds swervedour Chevy Cavalier considerably, but we made it to the Sagamore Bridge(across Cape Cod Canal) where we were stopped, and all traffic was for-bidden to cross due to the severity of the winds. After about a twohour ~it, we got the OK to continue, and all was OK till we got tovrleans, where at the traffic circle between Orleans and £asham wewere again stopped, with all traffic, as the roads were blocked byfallen trees. All eleceric power was ofr on the entire Cape, but wetried backtracKing to find a restaurant that might have 9as stoves intheir kitchen, to no avail - there was one, with a line about a ailelongl Finally after another two hours we were alloed to proceed, un-til we goe aoout four blocks from hour home where we were told that aroof had blown off up ahead and no traffic could move due to it andfallen wires and trees. We got back out to the ~1ghway and took thenext exit to provincetown and came. in from the other direction, wonder-ing if it was our roof that was lying in the roadl To make a longstorysbort. 'twasn't our roof, but that of.a large hotel two blocksfrom us which had blown completely off. We had no damage - the TV andFM atennas survived the storm intact, thank God- and believe me, wedidl...'continued next week)

Rick Evans, 4841 South 26th Street, Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53221A newspaper clipping from Howard Kemp says that WKBR-1250 Manchea-

ter, NH is back on the air again after being off sine. January. Itwill be combined with ~~NH-AK of Madbury/Dover to make up the LoveRadio network, with a format of contemporary gospel, inspirationalmusic and teaching that will reach a potential audience of over onemillion people. I don't know what you did this weekend with theexpanDed Thomas hearing in the US Senate but I watched a lot of iton the new "Court TV" cable channel. Locally, the coverage was liveon WCKY-92C an~ possiOly other stations in tne area. rne ~acesc ArC~-tron liseing is out, and only 2 AMs wound up in the top ten: .1 WTMJ-620 and #2 WOKY-920. *11 was WISN-1130 #16 WHVP-1290, *17 WEMP-1250abd WNOV-860 (tied), .19 WGN-720 (chicago) with O.~, and #21 WLUP-IOOO(tied with 5 others including WBBM-780) with 0.5~. I was surprised tofind 3 Chicago stations on the list in Milwaukee 90 miles away. I~as down in Illinois Saturday doing 8c.e "leafing" (as it's called inPenn.). My wife decided she wanteD to lo~k thru an anti~ue store inHebron so I went in ~ith her. In there, I found two copies of RadioLife magazine from WWII. I've just had time to glance at one of thembut it was interesting. Perhaps next week...73.
