The benefit is that we receive forgiveness of sins and the Holy Spirit. Here, not poison, but a remedy and salvation is given, in so far as you acknowledge that you need it. Don’t say: I am not fit today, I will wait a while. This is the trick of the devil. What will you do if you are not fit when death comes? Who will make you fit then? Say rather: Neither preacher, prince, Pope, nor emperor compels me, but my great need and beyond this, the benefit” (Luther 1959b) Luther worried about the infrequency with many Christians came to the Lord’s Table in His day. Some felt no need, and Luther sternly cautioned them that such an attitude was a clear indication of peril. When one’s spirit is not troubled by the consciousness of sin and experiences no hunger for mercy and reconciliation, then one is desperately in need of grace. At such times we are the least competent judges of our condition and must be “sinners by faith”, that is, we must take God’s Word as to the depth of our brokenness and alienation. One does not determine when to be baptized according to the strength of one’s faith, nor does wait until one feels deserving to come to the Lord’s Table. The sacrament does not demand righteousness, it imparts it; it creates the faith it requires. Humility in this instance may not serve us well. Our conviction of unworthiness may foster the drive to make ourselves “fit” and thus to assume some responsibility for our own salvation, to merit in some small measure the benefits bestowed by the sacrament. Time and again Luther reminds us that God doesn’t give grace on such terms. When we look at yourself and see our great need, let it turn us to Christ, not in on ourselves. Let it carry us to the table, not drive us away. Forgiveness of sin and the gifts of the Spirit wait for us there, the very things we need to be fit for service and salvation. Gracious Lord Jesus, teach us to know our great need, bring us to your table, and fill us with your grace. Amen. May our good God bless you all, With prayerful regards, Mothy Achen

THE LORD’S SUPPER“The need (which drives us to [the Lord’s Supper]) is that sin, devil, and death are always present. The benefit is that we receive forgiveness

of sins and the Holy Spirit. Here, not poison, but a remedy and salvation is given, in so far as you acknowledge that you need it. Don’t say: I am not fit today, I will wait a

while. This is the trick of the devil. What will you do if you are not fit when death comes? Who will make you fit then? Say rather: Neither preacher, prince, Pope, nor emperor

compels me, but my great need and beyond this, the benefit” (Luther 1959b)

Luther worried about the

infrequency with many Christians

came to the Lord’s Table in His

day. Some felt no need, and

Luther sternly cautioned them

that such an attitude was a clear

indication of peril. When one’s

spirit is not troubled by the

consciousness of sin and

experiences no hunger for mercy

and reconciliation, then one is

desperately in need of grace. At

such times we are the least

competent judges of our

condition and must be “sinners by

faith”, that is, we must take God’s

Word as to the depth of our

brokenness and alienation.

One does not determine when to

be baptized according to the

strength of one’s faith, nor does

wait until one feels deserving to

come to the Lord’s Table. The

sacrament does not demand

righteousness, it imparts it; it

creates the faith it requires.

Humility in this instance may not

serve us well. Our conviction of

unworthiness may foster the drive

to make ourselves “fit” and thus

to assume some responsibility for

our own salvation, to merit in

some small measure the benefits

bestowed by the sacrament. Time

and again Luther reminds us that

God doesn’t give grace on such

terms. When we look at yourself

and see our great need, let it turn

us to Christ, not in on ourselves.

Let it carry us to the table, not

drive us away. Forgiveness of sin

and the gifts of the Spirit wait for

us there, the very things we need

to be fit for service and salvation.

Gracious Lord Jesus, teach us to

know our great need, bring us to

your table, and fill us with your

grace. Amen.

May our good God bless you all,

With prayerful regards,

Mothy

Achen
