THE PAIN OF SINBut I did not see sin. I believe it has no substance or real existence. It can only be known by the pain it causes. This pain is

something, as I see it, which lasts, but a while. It purges us and makes us know ourselves, so that we ask for mercy. (Julian

    1966)

It is striking how many times the effects of sin and wrongdoing are felt physically :guilt tightens the stomach, broken

relationships bring real heartache to the heart, words too quickly spoken hang in the air and we feel desperate to be able to

reel them in like line on a fishing rod. Julian writes, Sincan only be known by the pain it causes. A simple and true

statement! How easily the effects of sin can be felt in our own discomfort and wrongdoing, and the emotional pain or dis-

ease wreaked upon those lives are touched by that sin. Perhaps the physical discomfort we experience in such times itselfpart of Gods judgement in that moment. Perhaps it does serve as Julian contends, to help us know our need and ask for

    forgiveness.

Julian goes on to say: The passion of our Lord is our comfort against all this-for such is his blessed will. Because of His

tender love for those who are to be save our good Lord comforts us once and sweetly as if to say.All will be well, and all

will be well and every manner of thing will be well (Doyle 1983)

The psalmist provides us a marvellous portrait of the God whose memory becomes poor when it comes to keeping track of

our sins and who takes pleasure in offering forgiveness. Julians confident words that all will be well find an echo in the

psalm: The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He will not always chide, nor will

he keep His anger forever. He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor requite us according to our

iniquities. For as heavens are high above the earth, so great is His steadfast love toward those

who fear Him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions

    from us(Ps. 103:8-12).

Gracious and loving God, we rejoice that you look with compassion and tenderness upon our

sin. We ask your forgiveness for all that has been hurtful to the neighbour, and pray that you

will continue to work your way within us, to bring us faith and new life. Amen

May our good God bless you all,

    With prayerful regards,

    Mothy Achen
