CIAO Newsletter EDITION #36

Centre for Informatics and Applied Optimization Apr-Jun 2018

CRICOS Provider No. 00103D Page 2 of 16

Director’s section Welcome to our second Newsletter this year. It covers the period April – June 2018.

This period was rich in various events. Let me mention our annual CIAO Showcase on 12 April 2018, celebrating CIAO achievements in 2017. As previously, we had enough to celebrate in terms of research output, impact and engagement. A big thank you to all who were actively involved in preparing the event, who gave talks at the accompanying workshop and/or presented group or individual posters. Many thanks to Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research and Innovation Prof Leigh Sullivan, who came to demonstrate his support to CIAO by officially launching the showcase as well as the 2017 CIAO annual report, and to Helen Wade, who facilitated the whole event.

The second AMSI Optimise workshop took place at the University of Melbourne 18-22 June. As last year, it was organised by the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) and supported by the Federal and State Governments, which consider now optimisation as a national priority, and a number of major businesses. The workshop aimed at strengthening mathematical optimisation research engagement with industry and allowed academics from Australian universities actively interact with Australian businesses and learn each other’s capabilities and needs. The meeting received significant media coverage.

Regular series of CIAO optimisation seminars continues at Mount Helen campus on Thursdays. Remote access via Visimeet is available. This year we have had 15 research talks so far, including 3 presentations by international visitors. The seminars are not strongly restricted to optimisation. Our general research support forums started at the end of 2017 are getting regular too. They are not limited to CIAO researchers. All are welcome.

We continue hosting international visitors. During the first six months of this year we have had 12 visitors.

This edition features a new section which is likely to become regular: CIAO in history. Its content comes from (relatively) old CIAO newsletters. I find it very interesting to look back a little, rediscover some (almost) forgotten facts, find familiar names and (slightly younger) faces. The current section contains two subsections: ‘15 years ago’ and ‘10 years ago’.

As always, the newsletter contains the list of recent publications by CIAO members.

Enjoy the reading.

A/Prof Alex Kruger

Funding to optimise water quality in water resource systems and water grids Grampians Wimmera Mallee Water (GWMWater) will join with FedUni to fund an industry PhD scholarship looking to research the problem of optimising water quality in water resource systems and water grids. The project has a total value of $126,000 over three years. In relation to the project, A/Prof Andrew Barton said "this project provides an example of how industry and FedUni can work together to solve nationally significant problems."

GWMWater supplies water to much of north-western Victoria which includes some of the driest parts of the State. As part of its operations GWMWater uses multiple reservoirs and a complex system of interconnected pipelines and channels, or water grid, to supply water to a range of users for waterway health, industry, towns and farms. The quality of water available for supply can often vary considerably. This is a challenge because different water users will usually have different water quality preferences, but these preferences may not always be possible to meet in the context of overall system constraints or other competing objectives. It is anticipated that this research project will assist GWMWater, and the broader water industry, to understand the options available in maximising the quality of water to users.

Successful project with City West Water HDR student David Ebbs successfully completed in December 2017 his APR Internship at City West Water, with A/Prof Andrew Barton as his mentor. David’s work contributes to Melbourne’s 50-year Sewerage Strategy, and involved collaborating with Melbourne Water, South East Water, Yarra Valley Water, Western water and City West Water to undertake analysis around the availability of water, carbon, and nutrients as a resource, and helping to develop a prioritised list of opportunities to increase resource recovery and leverage increased value from the sewerage system. David’s time spent working on Melbourne’s sewerage strategy will also go towards one of the chapters of his PhD thesis. City West Water and Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute were very appreciative of David’s efforts and have praised their relationship with FedUni.

Successful Australian postgraduate research internship Higher degree research student Paul Black and his mentor A/Prof Iqbal Gondal were successful in securing an APR Internship with CYDARM: Integrated Cybersecurity Operations Platform. The project is titled “Machine Learning from Cyber Security Operations Relevance Feedback” and has a duration of 5 months.

Several other applications for APR Internships (formerly AMSI Internships) have been submitted in recent weeks by HDR students. In this scheme, HDR students work with industry partners on real world issues for the company. Our students have found these internships to be a valuable experience, with many leading to employment. We look forward to successful outcomes of the applications.

10 years ago (CIAO Newsletter #20, Winter 2008) Official Opening: Internet Commerce Security Laboratory (ICSL)

CIAO’s new Internet Commerce Security Laboratory was formally opened on 14 May 2008 at the University of Ballarat, in front of an excited audience of more than 100 people. The Honourable Theo Theophanous, State Government Minister for Information and Communication Technology officiated at this important event.

The ICSL is a collaborative project funded by Westpac Banking Corporation, IBM Global Technology Services, the Victorian State Government, and the University of Ballarat, and is a unique venture that is the first of its kind in Australia.

Speakers at the opening included:

Professor David Battersby, Vice-Chancellor, University of Ballarat Mr David Backley, Chief Technology Officer, Westpac Banking Corporation Mr Peter Campbell, General Manager, IBM Global Technology Services

The ICSL will produce an ongoing capability to tackle the national and international problems associated with internet fraud, internet security and identity management. It will also provide highly skilled, industry-ready Information and Communication Technology postgraduate researchers, prepared for employment within the banking and financial services sector.

This project broadens CIAO’s important relationship with IBM, creates a strong bond with Westpac and the Victorian State Government, and is expected to grow significantly over the next five years to include other key stakeholders.

Editor’s comment: Our records show that there were several ‘Official Openings’ of ICSL. The laboratory came to life at least a year earlier.
