Hi fellow Rotarians and Friends of
Rotary.
Since our last Club bulletin we have
regrettably had to postpone the MR
Challenge event. The reasons for this
decision have been well documented
so they don’t need to be covered here.
Suffice to say that the Club’s Board
members support the decision and that
we will advise of a new date for later
this year.
Meanwhile, during April we have
inducted two new Club members –
Murray Veitch and Brendan Watters.
A sincere welcome to you both! We
are also fortunate in that both men
bring a wealth of Rotary experience
with them. Gentlemen, we all look
forward to you both playing an active
part in fund raising, in having fun
with us and in learning of your ideas
for the ongoing success of our Club.
Earlier this month, we also hosted the
Club’s two successfully nominated
National Youth Science Forum
attendees – Jessica Li and Rory
Sutherland. As our guest speakers it
was obvious that they were great
ambassadors during their experience
at the Forum. They each outlined their
exposure to a wide range of scientific
fields during their week at the Forum
in Canberra. Their presentation
concluded with a thank you to our
Club for helping them make an
informed decision about their careers
and to realise their potential.
That brings us to last week where we
once again welcomed Steve Myall as
our guest speaker. As an experienced
magistrate, Steve presented a very
insightful view of the current and
proposed new parole and suspended
sentence laws. Steve mentioned that
the option to provide a suspended
sentence to a convicted person will be
removed from Sept. 2014.
The President’s message
Finally last Friday a number of
Rotarians joined me at the Gisborne
cenotaph to commemorate ANZAC
Day. On a beautiful autumn morning
a large number of locals attended to
remember the sacrifice of our men
and women across all wars.
We now move to May and with it
comes our 37th
anniversary as a
Rotary Club. Pat and her committee
would like to hear from you with
ideas to help make the night fun and
enjoyable. This coming Tuesday in
place of our normal meeting some
members will be attending
International House for our
presentation of the Peter Read
Scholarship.
I look forward to your company
when we all meet again on May 6th
to
hear Ann Hudson present her version
of the Rotarian behind the Badge.
As always, I look forward to your
company this coming Tuesday.

We are in Salzburg now, off to Vienna on the train tomorrow.
The weather has been beautiful up until the last few days when it turned very cold. Top today of 4
degrees! You can probably tell by the photo (see above) it is freezing!
We did a walking tour of Salzburg old town and one of the spots has the oldest restaurant in Europe,
guess who meets there? They probably listen to Mozart's music also because everywhere you go in
Salzburg is Mozart.

2014 Rotary Illuminated -
DISTRICT ASSEMBLY
Please help us implement our
2nd District 9800 Basic Education and Literacy Project by …
purchasing, donating and collecting materials and goods related to
learning how to write and the teaching of writing.
We need pens, pencils, textas, crayons, rulers, sharpeners, erasers,
exercise books, scrap books, packets of lined writing paper, note pads,
photocopying paper, pencil cases etc.
Bring them along to the Basic Education and Literacy Stall in the
Tabcorp Rotary Illuminated District Assembly Market Place – 1st
Floor (beside the Registration Desk) on May 18th.
Last year we collected around 1,200 books and this year our goal is to collect
over 1,500 writing related items. It would be a wonderful show of our
commitment to “Literacy for All” if every club made a contribution of 209
items; and it would certainly help to address the problems faced by the
hundreds of thousands of individuals around the world who have never learnt to
write and are therefore unable to record their ideas, thoughts, understandings
and feelings for others to read.

Steve Myall, a magistrate at the Sunshine Magistrate’s Court, was our guest speaker last week.
He spoke about the new rules governing our parole system. For example, a six year sentence with parole after
four years is now different to the old system.
Felons have to apply for parole after the four year term has been completed. As a result, it could take many
months before parole is granted.
Unfortunately our jails are currently overcrowded. Therefore, offenders are kept in cells at police stations for
longer periods.
In addition, help with rehabilitation whilst incarcerated is unlikely. Consequently, it is highly likely that
people will re-offend.
Steve gave us many examples of problems with the penal system.
Members remain after the meeting and Steve answered many of their questions.

Note taking
When we look back on our lives,
we think about what we have
done, what we have achieved, the
challenges we have faced and
how we have overcome the many
adversities on the road to
accomplishing our goals and
dreams. Importantly, as
Rotarians, we think about how
we have been of service to others.
