You will notice on the front cover this week we have a photo of the Division 1 councillor, Rick Baberowski, taken at the Coochin Creek Camp Ground on Roys Road.Since taking on the role as councillor he had mentioned in his GCNews column that he was interested in finding out what residents felt were their favourite places.For regular readers you won’t be surprised this immediately got our attention - we love the term ‘backyard tourists’ and got in contact with him about working together on this project.GCNews looks forward to being able to share local’s favourite spots with our readers and I am sure there will be places that residents who are new to the area will be absolutely surprised by.I have been thinking about my favourite spot and at this stage I have decided that I can’t really

narrow it down to just one view / spot, but I can probably narrow it down to Mt Coonowrin ‘Crockneck’.I love to catch a glimpse of it from the many different locations that I travel to each day.Even last Saturday morning when we were at Happy Valley at Caloundra for an early morning walk, it was a particularly clear morning and looking back across the Pumicestone Passage you got a great view, and it put a smile on my face seeing it in the distance.If you have a particular spot you would like to share with others – check out Cr Baberowski’s story on page 3.

Our favourite placesGCNews, together with division 1 councillor Rick Baberowski, are encouraging locals to get outdoors with a new campaign ‘Our Favourite Places’ designed to celebrate our unique natural environment.The novel concept, proposed by Cr Baberowski, gives residents the opportunity to share with others some of the area’s hidden treasures, and your favourite, secret places.To kick things off, we asked Cr Baberowski to share his favourite location.“Despite some pot holes at the moment in the access road, it would have to be the camping grounds at Coochin Creek,” he said.“As soon as you head off on a walking track or down to the water, I feel immediately transported away from my daily concerns.“It’s such a beautiful, scenic and peaceful spot, I’m sure for many it is an undiscovered gem in our region,” Cr Baberowski said.From the back to basics composting toilets to the vista of Coochin Creek in all its magnificent glory, the National Park camping ground offers 21 camping sites (permits required) and a number of picnic tables and gas barbeques, and is perfect for both the day tripper, and the keen fishermen, with the Coochin Creek boat ramp just one kilometre away.Cr Baberowski said he wants to encourage everyone in division 1 to become more active back yard tourists.“We have a truly outstanding range of scenic spots that often only local residents know about.

Revival of lost craft in LandsboroughIt seems the tradition of preserving age old crafts is alive and well in Glasshouse. This week, we were fortunate to catch up with Landsborough local Judi Tompkins, one of only a handful of individuals across the state actively involved in the craft of traditional rug hooking.Rug hooking, which is sometimes mistaken with a much more recent and popular craft known as latch hooking, is both an art and a craft in itself, and is enjoying a quiet resurgence in the craft rooms of a small but growing number of women around the country.With a huge following in the United States and the UK, Judi, who has been rug making seriously for the past few years, said Australians have literally been left out of the loop when it comes to keeping the heritage craft alive.She said the sister craft to quilting originally evolved like most things, out of necessity, in the cold climates of the Northern Hemisphere, where warm floor coverings had an important and practical function.“These handcrafted rugs served not only to beautify the home, but were also a way to recycle scraps of other fabrics and materials, supporting the philosophy of thrift, which ironically is probably one of the main reasons the craft has lost some of its ‘gloss’ over the years,” Judi said.Judi said because the floor coverings were often made from rags or scraps, many of the migrants who brought the skills to this country, didn’t want to be associated with a craft of thrift as they prospered in a new land.Hence, the skills weren’t passed on to their children, and future generations.

But, as fate would have it, Judi, who only arrived in Australia herself in 1989, emigrating from the US, brought not only the knowledge, but the passion of this craft with her.“I am of an era where many of the more traditional craft and cooking styles were passed down from my grandmother, and I think it’s sad to see these age old traditions lost to future generations.Judi said the passing down of old traditions was also a valuable way to connect with the younger generation, where the focus had shifted to a dependency on technology.“It’s a great way to spend time with children and grandchildren, and it’s important to encourage interests other than modern technology and sport.Judi is hoping to hold a free rug making demonstration at the Caloundra library if she can generate enough interest. Revival of lost craft in Landsborough

No immediate solution for damage to our iconic mountainsBy Greg BrownRepresentatives from the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN), the Trail Runners Association of Queensland (TRAQ), National Parks Association of Queensland (NPAQ), Councillor Rick Baberowski, and others met recently with Steven Dickson MP, Minister for National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing, Andrew Powell, to discuss damage and erosion in National Parks areas as a result of trail bike and four wheel drive activities.Cliff Schnick, President of GMAN said that their concerns were about the increasing damage being done to the local environment.“The damage caused, risks threatened flora and fauna habitat, as well as the soil damage and erosion, much of which inevitably washes downstream into the Pumicestone Passage, an already deteriorating waterway,” said Cliff.The meeting, also attended by Paul Donatiu, Executive Coordinator of the National Parks Association of Queensland, established that trail bike riders in National Parks were of greatest concerns, but that four wheel drives were also becoming a serious issue.Despite environmental concerns shared by many, Mr Dickson said the state government was serious about implementing their policy of opening up national parks to more uses.“We will do anything needed to boost the tourism potential of the area.“We will be implementing a process to assess the values of the parks in the system and changing their classifications if needed.”The government is also working to facilitate the

set up of multi-use facilities for activities such as trail bike riding and four wheel driving.“We have been working on establishing one such location between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, and another between the Sunshine Coast and Maryborough,” said the Minister.Mr Dickson said there would be an announcement on these in the near future.In the meantime, the National Heritage listed mountains we all love are being damaged, and in some locations, almost beyond repair. It was what went unsaid at the meeting may also end up cost the region dearly. The Minister gave no solutions for better policing of the illegal activities. The idea of an identification system for trail bikes was put into the ‘politically too hard basket’. No commitments were given by either Minister to increase signage, awareness or community education. And nothing was said about actually repairing the existing environmental damage.The destruction and illegal trail bike activity is also risking an iconic internationally recognised local event – the Glasshouse trail runs.Ian Javes, Trail Runners Association of Queensland and the organiser of the event since 1990, has had enough.“The damage caused by trail bikes is making the events almost impossible to continue with.“If something isn’t done to stop the problems, I’m afraid that the runs may have to be abandoned,” said Ian.Mr Dickson showed his concern at the prospect, but reiterated that funding was a problem.“There is no money to throw at these problems,” he said.According to Paul Donatiu, National Parks Association, research suggests that there is a lack of short walks for National Park visitors.

“People have told us that there aren’t enough short walks where people can have a look at something wonderful. We have these iconic and spectacular places, but we don’t have short trails where day visitors can get to see them,” he said.Both Mr Dickson and Mr Powell agreed that there was definitely a need for more short walks locally.“We already have a few great short walks locally, but there is definitely room for more. And maybe we also need to promote the existing ones a little better as well,” Mr Powell said.Subsequently, Cliff Schnick said that while GMAN considered that the meeting had created a positive connection with the Ministers on the issue of developing and promoting relevant and appropriate activities in our National Parks areas, it was disappointing to find that less than 24 hours later, Minister Dickson announced that 875,000 hectares of National Parks would have their status rescinded and be opened up to logging and grazing.“This together with recent announcements of opening up commercial opportunities within national parks should ring some warning bells.“While GMAN continues to pursue the establishment of more trails, tracks and park facilities, approaches to do so are being confused and frustrated by the Minister’s retrograde announcements,” said Cliff.

Exciting new events for Beerwah Charity Sports DayThis year’s Charity Sports Day will be held on Saturday, August 25 at the Beerwah Sportsground and will feature some terrific new attractions.Local Peachester resident, Cameron Hermansen (pictured) and friend Aaron Guthrie, will give a display of aerial trick riding from the Freestyle Moto-cross team. Cameron and Aaron will be scheduled for two shows during the day, so make sure you don’t miss it.Also this year, the Ute Muster has been widened to a ‘Show and Shine’ event to cater for anyone and everyone who wants to show their own vehicle whether it be a sedan, a ute, a hot-rod, a street car or whatever. There will be classes for all vehicles in 15 categories plus people’s choice with trophies for winners of categories. So polish up the car and drive it along to the Show. Future of Mooloolah Pool in doubtThe future use of the Mooloolah Pool has been put into doubt when the current lease between Sunshine Coast Council and Education Queensland expires later this year.GCNews has been contacted by a concerned parent who said there were rumours that the pool would be closed to public access once the current agreement comes to an end in November.Mooloolah State School principal Michele Brown said under current arrangements, the public had access to the pool before and after school hours.“Currently, the arrangement between Council and Education Queensland allows for public use before and after school, however the pool is primarily used by the students of Mooloolah State School and surrounding local schools for swimming lessons in term one and four,” Ms Brown said.

She said the school was hopeful of a similar outcome when a new agreement is struck later this year.“Our hope is that the pool can continue to be shared by the school and the community,” she said.A Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson said the current lease between Education Queensland and Sunshine Coast Council for outside school hours use of the Mooloolah pool for the community expires in November 2012.“Council is continuing discussions with Education Queensland and Mooloolah State School about ongoing community access to the pool beyond November 2012,” the spokesperson said.The spokesperson said further information will be available in the near future as discussions between Council and Education Queensland progress.

Mooloolah Valley Sports Club future in balanceThe Mooloolah Valley Sports Club on Connection Road, Glenview has been closed since the club went into liquidation, with large debts owing to a range of creditors, including local businesses.As a result, the property was forced to sale through an expression of interest process instigated by the appointed liquidators – Morton’s Solvency Accountants.With the expression of interest period ending on June 28, the future of the club is now in the hands of the property agents –McGee’s Property.At the time of publication, GCNews understands that Morton’s are in the process of finalising their assessment of the expressions of interested received.A spokesperson for Morton’s said that they were in the process of signing a contract of sale with one of the interested parties.The spokesperson said that they expect a contract will be signed in about one week, and that a report will be made available to creditors, possibly in August.In the meantime, anxious locals are left waiting for the return of a favourite entertainment setting, casual dining venue and local meeting spot.One local former club member said that he just wants to know what’s going to happen.“It’s been going on for so long. We just want to know one way or the other,” he said.And that’s a sentiment probably shared by many in the community.

Step up, speak up and stay informed each monthSunshine Coast Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay will host information and consultation sessions for all to be informed and have a say regarding local and regional matters. It is envisaged that these sessions will continue until the end of this year.The first forum will take place on Thursday, July 26 from 7.30am - 8.30am at the Thunderbird Café in Mooloolah. Gowinta Farms handed a lifelineIn a sign of faith, administrators have handed Gowinta Farms a lifeline that will allow the company to continue trading, following a meeting with creditors last week.Administrators, Rodgers Reidy Chartered Accountants, agreed to a Deed of Company Arrangement (DOCA), which will allow the existing management to continue running the company, but to be overseen in the short term by the administrators.Gowinta Farms director Len Smith said he would like to thank everyone who had been understanding and supportive during the process. “We are relieved with the result that has been achieved and we will endeavour to work closely with those that are still willing to trade and support us in the future,” Len said.

“We are understanding of criticism and animosity that has arisen from this and will in time, if

allowed, to repair any damage that has been caused.”Len said he was disappointed by false and misleading information that had been circulating in the local community.“I am all for criticism, but totally opposed to lies,” he said. “We have high standards set for ourselves and the business going forward as we always have, and are prepared to do all it takes to keep our reputation intact.”

Mooloolah researcher wins university thesis competitionA local long-time occupational therapist who recently returned to postgraduate study has won a University of the Sunshine Coast competition for her engaging presentation on researching the lives of East Timorese people with disabilities.Mooloolah’s Jane Shamrock took out the annual USC Three Minute Thesis competition, beating six fellow early-career researchers from diverse fields to win the final and the $1,000 prize. She will compete in the 2012 Australian and New Zealand thesis competition later this year.Ms Shamrock, who became an academic two years ago when she joined USC as a Lecturer in Occupational Therapy, used her three minutes to outline her upcoming project to examine the daily lives and needs of people with disabilities in East Timor.She first visited the country in 1974 and has returned there regularly over the past 10 years to do both paid and volunteer work.“I’m excited about my research and I’m so surprised and delighted to win this award,” she said.

The funding will help with travel expenses as Ms Shamrock returns to a remote community in East Timor in mid-August to start a month of field work.“My research will be from and about people who don’t normally have a voice,” she said. “I’ll take digital cameras and ask these people to record things they find significant. I can use those photos as the basis for discussion for research.”Her goal is to complete her PhD research so it can assist western governments in planning aid programs for disadvantaged countries.“There is a lot of aid available but there are still huge problems of poverty in East Timor, and people with disabilities have additional needs,” she said.

From the Schools Giraffes can’t dance, but Glenview students can!The Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students from Glenview State School recently performed a story / dance based on the book, 'Giraffes Can't Dance.' They showcased their understanding of different cultures through movement, dance and storytelling. The students were dressed in costume and couldn't wait to show their parents what they had been learning from the Cuban Cha Cha to the English Galopede to the Heel and Toe Polka. At least 100 parents and friends turned up to watch the splendour and were amazed at the polished performance of the children as young as Prep through to Year 2. The teachers were very proud of their students and could see the growth from the beginning to the final performance.

Commonwealth Bank donates to Peachester school’s kitchen gardenPeachester State School’s community garden refurbishment program got a welcome boost last week, with a donation of some much-needed gardening supplies from the Beerwah branch of the Commonwealth Bank.The donation to the school was part of the Commonwealth Bank’s centenary celebrations.Beerwah branch manager Patricia Shaw was on hand to present the school with their donation.“This is a fantastic initiative that has enabled us to make a difference to our local community. We look forward to another 100 years of supporting the communities in which we operate,” she said.Peachester school principal Rosemarie Hodder said the school was grateful for the new supplies.“We wish to extend our gratitude to Commonwealth Bank Beerwah branch for providing us with this gift. It is a great indication of their sense of community and will be very well received.”The school’s kitchen garden is nearly complete, with lessons being prepared to show students how to cook and prepare their garden produce and also share in the tastes of their garden.

Beerwah Photographics owner Ilia Starkovsky has decided that as of the end of August he will semi-retire and close down his shop on 48 Simpson Street. He won’t be giving up photography and will still be available for weddings, portraits, and commercial photography, as well as photographic courses and his digital restoration service. He will be working from his home in Glass House Mountains, and will provide a personal pickup and delivery service. His huge database of over 5,000 images of archived customer jobs, are computerised and will be available by name and accessible for reprint. Community Group Updates

The Beerwah Sports GroundsContributed by Joy HodgensSport played a very important part in the busy lives of our early settlers. John Simpson, mine host at Coochin Creek Hotel from the 1880s, had vivid youthful memories of the ‘Gas Light Sports’ held adjacent to his parents’ Redbank Inn and he continued this tradition at Coochin.An oval was built over the road from Coochin Hotel and sports were held regularly. At one of these days, John’s wife, a short heavily built woman, lifted her skirts and out-sprinted the lot. Tug-o-wars, wood chops and horse events were popular. These chops must have been among the first in Queensland.The ant bed cricket pitch was regarded as one of the best in the area and John Simpson had a free shout wager going for any batsman who could hit a ball over the pub roof. The oval was referred to as ‘the Green’ when cricket was being played.With the coming of the railway, closer settlement took place around the township of Beerwah. A new oval took shape on a reserve at the rail end of Slaughteryard Road (now Roberts Road), and cricket and football teams played competitively.Sports days were held annually. They were huge social events where the whole district turned out. Ladies’ nail driving, broom throwing, hop, step and jump, vaulting, long and high jump, wood-chopping, crosscut sawing and novelty races were usually on the program.Foot races were of special interest and stakes were high. The men took it seriously, many lining up in the running gear of the day. This could include a running singlet, full length tights under a hand sewn pair of satin shorts, and even a pair of running shoes.Horse racing was keenly followed, there being a number of racetracks in the area. Surprisingly, trots were held as well. As a young girl, Grace Hodgens accompanied her father to the sports ground to train his trotters Bon Ton and Stella.At one time the sports ground was also used for greyhound racing. Family records show that the Simpsons raced greyhounds there in the 1920s and 1930s and possibly later. A snared possum was stuffed and used as a lure. Activated by a sewing machine wheel, the lure was wound in ahead of the racing greyhounds.The sports ground is now used for a variety of sporting events, including the annual Charity Sports which started in 1971 with a program based on the old-time sports. The current president hands over the reins to the President elect for the next 12 months. The incoming president invites guests and friends to share this important event with him. Our Rotary Club’s big night was attended by the District Governor Elect 2012-13, Dai Mason and his lovely wife Sue. Also in attendance were Helen Fox, Assistant Governor, Win Fowles, representative of the University of the Sunshine Coast Community Fund, our very own past President Pat Green and her husband Tony, Graham Leach and wife Barbara, Charter President of the Kawana Waters Club as well as 55 other members and friends of Rotary.The guests enjoyed not just good food and great fellowship but also witnessed the presentation of numerous annual donations to different local organisations, like the Cystic Fibrosis, Rural Firebrigades, Historical Society Peachester, Cancer Council Australia and of course the Chaplaincy Fund.Our long standing Treasurer Sue Schlapa received a Certificate of Appreciation for the fantastic job she has done over the past few years, and a further four attendees received the John and Pat Wagner – Service to Cystic Fibrosis, Oskar and Suzan Schlapa – Years of Rotary. Incoming President John Kemp addressed the guests and pointed out that this year’s Motto from Rotary International is ‘Peace through Service’.

Speed DipOn our regular trips down the Peachester Range road, we noticed a spot that could be referred to as a ‘Speed Dip’ rather than ‘Speed Bump’. It’s occurred at a spot where one of those pipes were installed across the road to drain water and it appears to be sinking. Climate change sceptics Climate change deniers and sceptics can always find names of scientists and/or little known ‘research groups’ to back their claims, but seldom quote any of the tens of thousands of world renowned scientists who have published their research for decades, to enable peer review by other scientists who are carrying out research without biased financial backing.Sceptics however take notice of the recent findings of American scientists who have made the following findings of fact as follows:-In the period 1960-1980, incidents of extreme heat were balanced by similar numbers of extreme cold incidents.Then in the period to 2005, extreme heat events were double the extreme cold events. However in the period to 2011, extreme heat events were 11 times greater than extreme cold events.Also NASA has officially discounted solar flares etc., as having any significant connection with the proven heating of our planet, although there are those who claim the earth's temperature is not increasing despite every credible measurement.

Police Boys Club neededI was devastated to learn about the wanton destruction of Skippy Park. My guess is bored young adults were the culprits. I have long thought this area needs a Police Boys Club to teach boys how to box.Venue? Perhaps the building adjacent to the library in Beerwah or the AFL Building in Tunnel Ridge Road. Funding? Apply now for community grants for up to $2,000 from Sunshine Coast Council. If every family in the area donated a gold coin, this project could be up and running. I am sure with Police support there would be some retired ‘PUGS’ who would help with the training. Look what the PCYC did to turn Jeff French around and help make him a world champion? There are sponsors out there like Everhard, Nike, Puma etc etc. There could be guest speakers like SLSC, Greening Australia, Defensive Driving, film nights, maybe the RSL would agree to take them to the venue. The Federal Government is spending thousands on letting the public know about the small amount they have given needy families for carbon tax. Forget that ad and replace it with ‘do you know where your children are tonight?’ If this project is to get started the public must liaise with the Police and form a committee. Please let me know what you think.

We need answers from councilI would like to know when the council is going to do something about erecting a suitable bus shelter for the children of Mooloolah. Many school buses collect children in the morning and drop them off every afternoon at the Mooloolah Park - Beerwah High, Glasshouse Country Christian College, Meridan College, Unity College, Nambour High, Caloundra High just to name a few. It is shameful that on rainy days these children are huddled outside the toilets awaiting their buses. Not next to the toilets or beside the toilets but at the entrance of the toilets! Seriously it’s disgusting! Rates keep going up and yet the work being done in our township is remiss. What about the eyesore of the unfinished path on Mooloolah Connection Road from the Old Gympie Road toward town? What’s with that? Will it ever be finished and why is it taking so long? Any answers would be appreciated!

Maleny High School 25th CelebrationsThis year marks the 25th anniversary of the opening of Maleny State High School at its present site. At that time and for the first few years of operation, many students from Landsborough, Beerwah, Glass House, Beerburrum and surrounding areas attended the school.Past students and staff are invited to come along, catch up and reminisce at the school on the afternoon of Saturday, September 1, from 3.00pm. News from ParliamentSome of you may be interested to know a little more about the Greentape Bill which has recently been brought to the House. The Greentape Bill is a co-ordinated package of legislation, business process and information systems reform to the licensing application and assessment processes under the Environmental Protection Act 1994 (EP Act) and represents the most significant reform to licensing processes under EP Act since it commenced. In a nutshell, the Greentape Bill will reduce costs for industry and the government, improve business investment certainty and allow frontline environmental regulation to be delivered more efficiently.It will produce estimated savings of $12.5 million per year contributing to the government’s policy to reduce regulation and red tape by 20 per cent. One of the best outcomes is that it will make it easier and cheaper for small business to establish. The proposed commencement date for the Act is March 2013 which will allow sufficient time to review and update the Environmental Protection Regulation, prepare guidance materials, train staff and businesses and update systems. Quite often I am contacted by residents of the Caloundra electorate who have transport concerns. These vary from locations of bus stops to bus routes themselves being inadequate. This week my office has received an email from council asking for assistance to encourage people to give feedback (by way of a survey on Councils website) regarding a trial bus service that has been operating in the area.Funded by Councils Public Transport Levy, the current trial servicing Beerwah and Landsborough connects with QTransport services. I would encourage any users of the Council funded bus service to log onto their website and complete the survey. My office number is 5491 2780.Caloundra Aerodrome leases to be extended There has been some good news for the businesses operating at the Caloundra Aerodrome who wanted to extend their leases. The State Government had agreed to extend these leases without going to tender. The Minister for Local Government David Crisafulli had approved that current lessees at Caloundra Aerodrome will not need to go to tender to extend their leases. I congratulate the Minister on moving quickly to resolve this issue after years of inaction by the former Labor Government.Despite only recently receiving the application, the new Minister for Local Government had acted expeditiously.In late 2009, the former State Government said the Aerodrome would not be moving, which provided some security.I'd like to thank all the community minded-champions who have fought for years to use the aerodrome for future economic growth in aviation – an area outside what would normally be associated with the Sunshine Coast.The lessees finally have a chance to get long-term leases and plan for a long-term future, especially for their employees.Full details of the decision will soon be with the Council.

What is Lewy Body Disease?Contributed by Linda MorseTwelve months ago my dad was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia / Disease. Like 95 per cent of the population I had never heard of Lewy Body. If someone mentioned dementia I immediately thought of Alzheimer’s. Lewy Body Disease (LBD) is thought to be the second most common, yet the most misdiagnosed and least known, of the 80+ identified dementias. It is not simply a disease of the elderly and can affect people in their late 30’s. More men than women appear to suffer from LBD, it is an urban myth that dementia is a natural part of aging.LBD is a degenerative and progressive brain disease. LBD has core distinguishing features and these include dementia; hallucinations: seeing or hearing things that are not really present; cognitive fluctuations: unpredictable changes in concentration and attention; Parkinson-like symptoms: rigidity or stiffness, shuffling gait, tremor, bradykinesia, severe sensitivity to neuroleptics (medications used to treat hallucinations), and REM Sleep Behavior Disorder.Education and awareness are essential, as there are medical practitioners and health care providers who are unaware of, or have limited knowledge of this disease.Discovered in 1912, in 1996 Lewy Body dementia was acknowledged as a separate disease. Early and accurate diagnosis is important as LBD patients may react differently than Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s patients to medication. Well one year on and Kaylene Sullian and her family have come a long way in learning the secrets to creating the perfect pizza – with a light and crispy crust and great tasting toppings.When I caught up recently with Kaylene she said when they first opened, they were just so busy which she described as being ‘smashed by customer’ and while they were really still finding their feet, they were not producing the consistently high standard that they are now.One of the main changes they’ve made follows Kaylene and her son Bradleys’ attendance to a weekend ‘Pizza University Workshop’ in Sydney, put on by an Italian company who make the fabulous Moretti Forni pizza ovens.Another change has been creating a team of people who work well together; everyone who

works there is either family or family friends, which Kaylene reckons makes for a really strong and motivated team who enjoy working together.They have an excellent range of pizzas and pasta which they complement with regular specials. Over the last couple of weeks I had the privilege of doing some interviews with people who don’t normally attend a church as part of my studies to find out what contemporary Australia thinks of the church today.Generally it seems that many people believe the church has a great role to play in society as we meet the needs of the poor and needy, and also to help in maintaining some moral standards in the community.When asked their opinion of Christians in general, if they knew any, it was quite positive; we’re all pretty easy to get along with.Although there does seem to be a group that profess to be ‘born again’ and these guys are a little too much to handle. Always talking about Jesus at every chance they get, handing out tracts at shopping centers, and their preachers seem to be so pushy about giving money, it’s a real turn-off for the average Aussie.So what does it mean to be ‘born again’? Is it just some spiritual concept taught by some of the more fanatical denominations among us, or is it widely accepted by all believers?In a conversation late at night with a religious

teacher named Nichodemus, Jesus said that no one enters the kingdom of God unless he is born again. Being ‘born of the Spirit of God’ is the moment you accept Jesus as your Lord and receive the forgiveness of your sins he offers through the payment he made on your behalf on the cross. In that moment, God’s Spirit will enter you and your spirit is made new or is ‘born again’.So as mad as it sounds, this is the message we must continue to preach, in order that each person may hear the gift that God is offering.Saint Paul explained to his friends in a place called Corinth a couple of thousand years ago: “The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing but to those who are being saved, it is the power of God!”While some of us seem stranger than others, being born again should be the one thing we have in common as Christians. We know, you hate it, filing is one of the things people dislike the most whether you are running a business or you are a wage earner. But unfortunately, hate it or not, filing has to be done, or you’ll soon find your desk collapsing under the weight of all the paper that keeps piling up.There are many different ways to keep your files and finding one that suits you is important. Here are a few suggestions as to how to file away your documents.INDIVIDUALS - Wage Earner (non business) - Keep some Arch Lever Files for documents such as:-Superannuation, Taxation File (copies of your returns plus any documents relating to your return, such as medical expenses, work related expenses, ATO correspondence), Bank Statements, and Credit Card Accounts.Or if you have a filing cabinet you may wish to keep documents in labelled

suspension files.Keeping documents in a particular file makes it easy anytime you need to find one, and it also makes it easier at taxation time to find any documents you may need to bring to your accountant.BUSINESS - There are three main types of Files – Annual, Semi-Permanent and Permanent, sometimes you will need a copy of documents for filing in more than one place.ANNUAL FILES - Paid Accounts An Arch Lever file is probably the easiest way to file these, it could be split into separate parts for example, general expenses, bankcard expenses etc. Just file them in the date order that they were paid, or an alternative is to file the documents alphabetically if this would be easier for you. Deposits Deposit Books kept together in date order.

Bank Statements Should be filed in date order, a monthly bank reconciliation can be filed with the statements.Debtor Invoices Once again file these in date order, invoice number, or alphabetically whichever suits you best. Wages Quarterly Super Returns to Funds. At the end of the year after your tax returns are completed these files can be emptied into a box and labelled with the Year.SEMI-PERMANENT FILESBAS Returns File all your BAS returns together in a folder with any supporting documents, this makes it easy at end of year to reconcile.PERMANENT FILESEmployee Files Tax file number declarations, award information, super information etc.Leases Lease agreements and any associated correspondence.Shares/Fund Investments A separate file for each Investment and

include Purchase Contracts and Sales Contracts. Shares – Dividends received or reinvested statements. Funds – Quarterly Distributions and Annual Tax Summaries. Term Deposits – Bank record of deposit, statement of interest received.Insurance Copies of insurance policies, claims, copies of invoices for claims.Assets Business Property – Purchase Contract, Solicitors Settlement letter, Capital Improvement invoices. Vacant Land - Rates notices. Rental Property – Purchase Contract, Solicitors Settlement letter, Capital Improvement invoices. Any asset purchases for the property. Business Assets – File purchase invoices for any Plant and Equipment, Furniture and Fittings, Computers or Motor Vehicles each in their own file category.Loans Loan documents and statements received from Bank.Filing may not be your favourite job but it makes life much easier when you need to find something later.

Rental demand remains strongThe Queensland rental market remained constricted at the midway point of 2012, according to the latest Real Estate Institute of Queensland’s (REIQ) residential rental vacancy rate survey.The REIQ June vacancy rates, compiled from surveying property managers from REIQ accredited agencies across Queensland, shows demand for rental properties is still exceeding supply in many parts of the State.As at the end of June, rental vacancy rates in many areas remained below 3 per cent, which is considered the equilibrium point of rental supply and demand.

“The first three months of the year are generally the busiest in the Queensland rental cycle so we often see vacancy rates particularly low during this period of time,” REIQ CEO Anton Kardash said.“What our latest survey shows us is that demand for rental property remained strong at the end of June with vacancy rates generally remaining tight.“While we are seeing an increase in the number of first home buyers and investors in the sales market, their activity will take some time to flow through to the rental market, which should ease some of this pressure on supply and rents we are now experiencing.”

For the second time this year, Rockhampton recorded the tightest rental market across the State. Its vacancy rate is 1.1 per cent, a very small improvement on 1 per cent in March. Local property managers say there has been an influx of families involved in the resources industry to the area, possibly due to the region’s more affordable rental market compared to neighbouring Gladstone and Mackay.The Sunshine Coast recorded a vacancy rate of 3.3 per cent, up from 3.1 per cent, over the same period.

Jagera is a small genus consisting of only four species, three of which are native to Australia. The origin of the name is subject to confusion. Some believe it to be named after the Dutch naturalist, Herbert De Jager, who travelled extensively through Asia in the 17th century. On the other hand ‘Jagera’ or ‘Yagara’ is the name of the Aboriginal tribe from the south side of the Brisbane River where the tree can be found growing.The most commonly found member of the genus in Australia is Jagera pseudorhus var. pseudorhus which can be found growing in moist forests from the North East region of NSW to far North Queensland.It is commonly known as Foambark due to the saponins in its bark which cause frothing when agitated in water. The saponins are poisonous to fish and Aborigines would use it to catch their meals.It is an important tree in forest regeneration as secondary growth to the pioneer plants and is one of the few plants that germinate under the canopy of a Camphor Laurel tree.

It makes a great specimen and shade tree growing to 10 metres in the open with an umbrella shaped spread to about eight metres. In a forest it can reach a height of 30 metres. Initial growth is tall and slender with its compound leaves having a tree fern appearance. After a few years the canopy starts to spread.The petioles (leaflet stalks) and underside of the young leaves are covered in fine brown hairs, lending the tree a soft rust colour.Panicles of creamy-yellow flowers appear in autumn and develop into fruiting capsules over winter to ripen and open in spring. The fruit is also covered in fine brown hairs but in this case the hairs are highly irritating and fruit should only be handled when wearing gloves. Each capsule will open on the tree to reveal three seeds. Propagation from the fresh seed is easy, with germination within a few weeks. The viability of the seed is short lived and therefore should not be stored.

Foambark is tolerant of most soil types as long as they are moist and will grow in part shade or full sun. They are sensitive to frosts.They attract many native birds and while they make great shade trees, care should be taken in selecting their position in the garden. Avoid planting near a pool as any bark falling into the water will cause foaming. Also avoid setting children’s playgrounds near the tree. The colourful fruit may tempt children to collect them, ending up with some itchy and upset kids.

Bailey has been playing with the Club since he started in the Under 8's in 2005. On Sunday he had the honour of leading the Under 12 's onto his home ground at Landsborough by running through the banner. He then play up in the U14's and kicked two goals to help these boys record their first win of the season.It was a terrific performance by Bailey on the day and a wonderful achievement on reaching this milestone.

This Wednesday, July 25, hopefully will see the Final of the Ladies’ Club Triples Competition completed and also a social game for both ladies and men.Last Thursday morning’s ‘Open Pairs’ was won by Bob Moss and Rob Farrell with a 2 + 28 and the runners-up were Joan and Stewart Wilson with a highest score of 15 in the second game. The afternoon game was won by Brian Fogarty and Rob Scullion / Rob Farrell (who played a half game each), with a score of 2 + 26. There was no runners-up prize due to an insufficient number of players.

Saturday saw the Second Round of the Men’s Pennant Season with our Divisions 1 and 5 playing ‘at home’ and Division 4 ‘away’ at Bongaree. Glasshouse Division 1 was beaten by Caboolture Lakes 64 to 54, Division 4 went down to Bongaree 46 to 37 and Division 5 had a 58 to 34 win against Solander Lake.
