PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Hello everyone!

What another wonderful week of remote learning we have had at WaSPS. Thanks

to everyone, we continue to see some wonderful work produced by the students and

we understand it is not always easy. It can be hard to get through everything, that’s

ok. Take a break and finish it at another time. Our health and wellbeing is important

too!

As we enter the third week of remote learning, we have been reflecting on the

changes that we have made to support learning and feedback to students. Google

Classroom and Seesaw have been wonderful online portals for students to upload

completed work tasks and receive feedback from their teachers. Students through

google classroom can offer support to each other and engage peer collaboration to

solve problems, this has been extremely beneficial especially in year 5.

Learning is not only occurring in bountiful means at home.

Staff have engaged professional development in a variety

of areas through this time to keep abreast of all the

initiatives we have embraced and a different way of

teaching. Along with learning a myriad of technology

platforms and planning options, the staff are continuing to upskill their capacity to

deliver the Instructional Model in its entirety, including during remote learning. The

Instructional Model is currently embraced in our planning for reading and viewing

however will be evident throughout all curriculum areas in 2021. What is the

Instructional Model you may ask?

The Instructional Model is a model of teaching and planning used by educators to

ensure students receive the optimum chance to embrace learning. The model

commences with:

Opening: we discuss our learning intention, which explains the what and why we are learning this content. Mini lesson: is the explicit teaching of the content or skill to demonstrate to the students how we use this skill to achieve the learning intention and transfer our knowledge. Work time: students independently or in groups attend to the learning and apply the learnt skill to the situations of learning.

Catch: is a time to check in and determine if we are able to apply the skill or whether we need to engage more teaching to ensure success with the learning. An opportunity to reflect and clarify.

Page 3: Edition 23 30th July 2020 - wantirnasouthps.vic.edu.auwantirnasouthps.vic.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/July-30th-Website.pdfFriday September 11th – School Photo Day Friday September

Work time: is an opportunity to transfer the knowledge or skill gained to a different scenario to embed and develop a deeper understanding of the skill. Debrief: is an opportunity to reflect on how successful we were with our learning. Also to consider where to next with our learning.

With a deeper level of understanding of the instructional

model we are well underway to support students at a deeper

level and achieve a goal set in our Annual Implementation

Plan. If you get an opportunity, ask your child about the

Instructional Model or elements of it.

Sharing the learning from home to school will be an

option next week. We will hold Parent Teacher

discussions next week on Tuesday August 4th,

Wednesday August 5th and Thursday August 6th. The

meeting will take place through our current means of

communication, webex. You will receive an invite to the

meeting room from your relevant class teacher. You will

be able to book a meeting through the usual platform of

Compass. More information is on Compass and in the newsletter below.

Term 3 is always a busy term on a number of fronts. Generally we would be holding

many tours and information sessions for prospective families in the coming year.

However due to the current situation we are unable to conduct the face to face tours

and greetings we are well known for. Therefore we have embraced a change to our

first point of call – the website. If you

visit the website you will see a new

look and new content. We are still in

the progress of finalising all the

minor details, however the website is

worth a look.

If you are aware of anyone in our community who has a child to commence

Foundations in 2021 please ask them to contact the office as soon as possible. We

have our numbers growing rapidly and will seek to accept enrolments outside our

designated neighbourhood school area from Term 4.

This is so true during these times.

Stay safe, stay well, and stay home.

Enjoy your weekend with those you love.

WASPS Wellbeing News There is no doubt that Remote Learning 2.0 is presenting us all with many challenges, as we try to navigate and balance the academic, social and emotional needs of our children. As parents, we are

prioritising this, while also balancing our own wellbeing and the many responsibilities we have with work, younger siblings, wider family commitments and our own emotions. Please know that our staff prioritise the wellbeing of our students, parents and families, and we are always here to support you in any way that we can.

The Victorian Department of Education and Training have recently put together online resources aimed to support the wellbeing and mental health of parents and their children.

Please click on the following topics that link to the Department’s website, for further

information:

HAVE YOU HEARD THE

What’s happening in the Hive ….

Our team of educators have been greeted with lots of smiling faces this week. The children are having fun engaging in many of the

activities including craft, board games, card games, music and dance and a large range of outside experiences.

Inside the Hive the educators have created a new Pizza Parlour for the children to continue to develop social skills, further extend on

their maths using the menus and ordering whilst using the money. Next week the children will design their own pizza to be put on

display for the educators.

This week some of the children have taken part in a student survey. This will help the team of educators have a better understanding

of how the children are feeling about the Hive, the experiences and our student/educators relationships. So far, we have had some

really good responses from our senior students voicing that they want to utilize the basketball courts more.
