Dear Family and Friends of ASD,
We have reached the midpoint of the school year. There’s just one more week until the end of semester. For many students in the upper school this means that next week is exam and final project week. If students have been carefully planning and organising their study time over the past couple of months this should go well for them. Unfortunately, some students will find themselves “stressing out” and “cramming” for exams at the last minute. In order to avoid this, it is important that those students who are behind on their exams find a quiet place at home this weekend to study and finish writing essays or projects. The night before a major test, go to bed early so you get enough rest and have a healthy breakfast in the morning so your brain has the fuel it needs for success. Best of luck to everyone next week and I hope to see many of you on the honour roll! Regards,
Edward LANGLAIS Director High School Principal ASD

This week’s column focuses on College Planning for this year’s 10th graders.
Our current 10th graders are the class of 2019 which means you are less than 3 short years away from graduation. This list will get you focused on the college
planning process:
Take the PSAT 10 in February or March. It provides valuable feedback on your college readiness and a free, personalized plan to help you start
getting ready for the SAT and for college.
Be in attendance and listen carefully when Mrs. Fuller presents information to the class (which will be in October). She will be discussing course schedules and any prerequisites for Advanced
Placement (A.P) classes offered in your Junior and Senior year.
Go on-line and begin researching colleges. Think about what field of study you are interested in and check out the colleges that may fit you
best.
Participate in school activities or volunteer efforts . Extracurricular activities can help you develop time-management skills and enrich your
high school experience.
Mrs. Fuller will be meeting with the 10th grade class in October to begin a
discussion about their high school career and beyond.
THE NEXT SAT DATE IS NOVEMBER 5TH.
FINAL DEADLINE: OCTOBER 7th.
COLLEGE COUNSELOR’S CORNER
During the week of January 23-27, Lower School classes will be researching some of
our students' home countries. They will
share these fun facts and features at the International Day event.
You are invited to bring in a food or dish
from your home country on January 28th. These will be shared so that the ASD
community can taste the cuisine of your
home country. Finger food or snacks are
best. A form was sent home with Lower School students on Friday; it will also be sent
out with this issue of the Talking Drums. If
you would like to bring a dish, please fill out the form and return it to your child's
classroom teacher or, for Upper School students, to Ms. Fomba on Wednesday,
January 18. This will give ASD's Parent Teacher Association time to prepare for the event.
The International Day event will include a parade of countries represented at ASD. You
and your children are invited to wear styles
of clothing from your home country. The parade will feature each country's national anthem.
Please review the list of countries represented at ASD and let us know if your
country is missing (by sending an email to [email protected]):
Argentina India
Australia Italy Belgium Kenya
Cameroon Lebanon
Canada Morocco
Chad Holland
China, People's Republic of Nigeria
Colombia Russia

WE NEED YOUR HELP: BE SURE YOUR CHILD IS PICKED UP ON TIME
We are having some difficulty with students who are staying after school for activities not being
picked up by parents or drivers in a timely manner. We do not want to leave any child
unsupervised, so some staff members are unfairly having to stay well pas t their normal working hours.
Students who participate in after school activities should be picked up by 4:15 (except for
swimming). Students who are repeatedly picked up late will be warned and then removed from after school activities if the problem continues.
We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in helping us correct this situation. If you have
questions or concerns, contact Mr. Fuller at [email protected].

Mr. David Elive
Geometric constructions are done using a compass and a straightedge only. The compass is used to construct congruent segments and angles in the form of arcs. The straightedge is used to draw segments, rays, and lines that are involved in geometric constructions. The geometry students have done geometric constructions in general and construction of various angles in particular.
