Great Green Guided Tour - Enviro Champions Day On Sunday the 19th of February Mrs. Russell and I went on the Great Green Guided Tour: Enviro Champions Day. It was an eye-opening experience because we went to different locations such as Craigieburn, Sunbury, Broadmeadows, Roxburgh Park, Banksia Gardens etc. to see different vegetable garden projects. This was a great opportunity to gain inspirational ideas for our Dimboola Road vegetable garden. I would like to thank Hume City Council and Mrs Russell for this opportunity. RENEE JACKSON

PURPLE DAY

On Thursday 16th March, Student Leaders from Dimboola Campus hosted an event called Purple Day. This event was to help raise money for epilepsy. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that causes a person to have a seizure and lose control of their body motions. This was very close to some of the student Leaders as a few of them knew someone close to them who experiences epilepsy on a day to day basis.

On the day, staff and students wore purple accessories to support the event and raise money for the fundraiser. At Lunch, we sold purple cupcakes, purple scones and purple jelly, with the support of our community, parents, staff and students. We also sprayed people’s hair purple for a gold coin donation, which was a lot of fun!

At the end of the day, we, as a school community raised $222.70 for this amazing cause. Overall,

the event was a success and it was so heart-warming to see everyone participate in this event with

the number one goal of raising money for epilepsy. Great job Dimboola! - Miti Tufuga

“It was good to see other students get involved in the event” – Victor Paulo

“It was a great opportunity for my mum to come and help out on the day” – Nataliyah Semisi

“The idea in general, was good….and so were the cupcakes” – Kayla Kurt

“The food was very creative and it was nice to see parents get involved” – Justin Yang

“There was a positive buzz!” – Mohit Shrivastav

Hands on HEADSS Year 9 students at Dimboola Road have been working in partnership with Melbourne University to train the next generation of doctors! Students have engaged in drama training on a weekly basis, learning a character they would play in simulated medical appointments. On Thursday 16th March, 18 students travelled to the Royal Children's Hospital to meet with medical students from Melbourne University. The Hume students were interviewed by four medical students throughout the day, and gave them aspiring doctor’s valuable feedback. The university students raved about how helpful and mature our students were, and the Hume students had a ball meeting new people. They were inspired by how easy it was to connect with older university students, and were full of excitement about their own possibilities for the future. Thanks to Helen Cahill from Melbourne University for facilitating the program. Naomi Maes Student Engagement and Wellbeing Lead Teacher Dimboola Road Campus

NO BULLYING DAY DIMBOOLA ROAD

Congratulations to the Welfare Team for another successful No Bullying Day on Friday 17th March. Year 9’s looked into the

results of bullying by watching the documentary, Bully. Year 7 and 8 students got their art on with creative activities, such

as bracelet making, chalk graffiti and mandala painting. The sports-minded students engaged in silent basketball and games

on the oval, and everyone enjoyed a visit from Mr Whippy!

BullyBusters As part of their Anti Bullying program the Year 7 students from Blair Street and Dimboola Road Campuses got together again to watch

a performance by Class Act theatre called Bully Busters. This performance, highlights to our students what bullying is and what forms

it can take. The performance also highlights ways in which students can combat bullying, both as victims and as bystanders. It also

shows some of the reasons why perpetrators of bullying, might be behaving the way they do. Students really enjoyed the performance

and interacted well with the performers. They were able to identify themes and asked a number of excellent questions at the end of

the performance, during the Q&A session. From now until the end of term students in Year 7 at both Campuses will now be focusing

on anti-bullying issues and strategies. The welfare teams at Blair Street and Dimboola Road, encourage parents to discuss this with

their students and to keep communicating with them about Bullying. It is important that any form of bullying is reported back to the

school, so that procedures can be put in place to make sure we have a happy and harmonious school community.

1. WHERE TO FOR JOBS? We all hear about loss of jobs, the changing employment scene, part time work, underemployment, jobs of the future. Obviously the future job situation is very hard to predict, but clearly, young people of today face tough decisions and an uncertain future regarding their study and career

options. In this regard, you might be interested to read some of Jan Owen’s thoughts in the publication The New Work Order: Ensuring young Australians have skills and experience for jobs of the future, not the past, at http://www.fya.org.au/2015/08/23/media-release-young-people-hardest-hit-by-new-work-order/. She believes that there will be three key economic drivers – automation, globalisation and collaboration. It makes for interesting, if concerning reading, with young people facing career/employment options entirely different from many of the older generations.

2. SOME OPEN DAY DATES FOR 2017 – These dates are supplied now for your diaries so you don’t double book activities on these days. Attendance at Open Days is vital for senior school students. They are especially important for courses which involve a folio presentation, an interview, an audition or completion of

some type of information kit as part of the application process (eg many art, design, drama and music courses). You need to see the facilities, go to an information session, talk to staff/students, and compare institutions.

GROWTH - Swinburne experienced a 15% increase in first preference applications for courses for 2017 over the previous year. There was also a 5% increase in offers of places at Swinburne. This was despite an overall fall in offers in Victoria of 6%. Health Sciences experienced the greatest increase of 117% over the last year. Design achieved an 18% increase,

Computer Sciences/ICT increased by 16%, Business by 15% and Media and Communications by 13%.

SCHOLARSHIPS - From 2017 onwards, scholarships of $5,000pa will be automatically offered to Swinburne applicants who receive an ATAR of 95

or more (no separate application required). Various grants are also available (apply direct to Swinburne). In addition, the High Achievers Program (HAP) will provide students receiving an ATAR of 95 or more with mentors, a personalised program, projects, and one-on-one

assistance.

NEW COURSES AT SWINBURNE IN 2017 will be the Bachelor of Nursing (with a technology focus) and the Bachelor of Engineering Practice. There will also be a Diploma of Advanced Technologies.

Swinburne is commencing an EARLY LEADERS PROGRAM. The ELP provides secondary students with opportunities to build and document their individual strengths and interests. The program identifies students who show enthusiasm and achievement in areas outside their secondary studies, including volunteer work, club or society participation, school projects and career exploration. By documenting and reflecting on their skills and achievements, students will

create a valuable resource with certified credentials from Swinburne for use in applications for employment, further study or other pursuits. Part of the reason for this program is that students are individuals with individual talents that may not be recognised by the ATAR system. NOTE: It is not an early offer program. The program is aimed at students in Year 11. Register interest at: http://www.swinburne.edu.au/early-leaders.

Swinburne is now offering a Masters degree in OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY, and from 2018 – 2020 will introduce Masters degrees in PHYSIOTHERAPY, DIETETICS and SPEECH PATHOLOGY.

4. LA TROBE UNIVERSITY NEWS – La Trobe’s main campus is located at Bundoora (Melbourne), and has campuses in Bendigo, Albury-Wodonga, Shepparton and Mildura. La Trobe turns 50 this year!

‘EXPERIENCE LA TROBE’ – How can you find out about studying at La Trobe university? Experience La Trobe provides an opportunity to attend workshops, lectures, and seminars whilst being exposed to areas of the university not usually available on Open Day. You’ll be able to talk to current academics and students to find out what their dream career is really like. Parents can attend the parents’ session if they wish covering

topics like university costs, courses and admissions. When: Melbourne: 9.30am – 4.30pm, Fri 7 April & Thurs 6 July; country campuses have Experience Days later in the year. Registrations and information: http://www.latrobe.edu.au/experience/events/experience-la-trobe-events

ASPIRE – La Trobe has offered the ASPIRE program for three years now. ASPIRE students have shown a significant commitment to their community through volunteerism, service and leadership. As a result of this, ASPIRE students are able to access a place at La Trobe on a significantly lower ATAR than otherwise required. Many employers indicate that volunteer experience gives candidates an advantage, and ASPIRE students are leading the way in employability. More information on applications for 2018 later.

The course is co-created and co-delivered by industry partners, it is designed to mirror a professional workplace, it is project-based and team-oriented. It has a studio environment rather than a traditional classroom, and students are assessed by project outcomes and performance reviews.

Traditional majors will not be offered, rather, student will have the opportunity to refine their interests towards industry sectors through the selection of different projects. Team projects will focus on four industry sectors: smart cities, Industry 4.0, Internet of Things and People, and products designed for people. Interested? 3. EARLY ACHIEVERS PROGRAM AT AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY (ACU) – Like all other Australian public universities, ACU is a university open to all of any faith or no faith at all. NOTE: Australia also has a small number of private universities – eg Bond University and the University of Notre Dame.

ACU has campuses throughout Australia, including in Melbourne (Fitzroy) and in Ballarat.

ACU offers a program known as the Early Achievers Program (EAP). This program allows applicants for ACU to indicate how they have contributed to the community during their lives, and successful applications can lead to an early offer of a place at the university. Applications open online for EAP on Wednesday 26 April and close on Monday 17 July. Offers of places will be made by ACU at the end of August, rather than having to wait until January to obtain an offer through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre. See: www.acu.edu.au/eap to find out more about how to prepare your application, how to submit it, and how to monitor it.
