Your Board of Directors

Message From The PresidentHello Neighbors:

The issue of speeding throughout our community has once again been a topic of conversation, particularly, on the social media website NextDoor. This has come before your Board of Directors, and it has been determined that this problem and resolution rests with the City of North Las Vegas.

I have been in contact with our City Councilman Richard Cherchio who has recommended a way your voice will be heard. He suggests that you contact him, and he will

follow up directly or have a staff person visit or call you about your concern.

This procedure will result in a formal complaint lodged with the city; thereby, providing a formal record that can be relied upon to cause more attention to be paid to us. Richard’s email is [email protected].

As you know, the Board of Directors voted in January to enclose and expand our community center. The complete project will be one of the most expensive undertaken, and it will NOT increase assessments.

This an exciting time as the crown jewel of our community will take on a new modern look and capability for additional and new functionality. The project will not be completed for at least 16 months from the time a contract with an approved contractor takes place, but I know the wait will be worth the result.

It is the Board of Director’s goal to keep you apprised of the timetable of what to expect as work begins and provide progress reports to the community.

Due to the expense of the Community Center project, there will not be any Capitalization Workshops for 2018.

Respectfully submitted,

Warren M. Geller, President, Sun City Aliante, Board of Directors

Communication – Something We Use Daily & Misuse as WellCommunication is as old as civilization, going back to the caveman and before. The origin of speech and language goes back some 500,000 years ago, according to Wikipedia. But the basis of signs goes back some 30,000 years B.C. to cave paintings.

Simply put, communication is a means of conveying messages to another person or entity/group through the use of words, sounds, signs, behavior – including eye contact, giggles, smiles, frowns, etc.

Communication consists of four skills: Vocal/verbal conversation, visual (signs, graphics, maps, photos, etc.), written (newsletters, newspapers, print media, digital media), and non-verbal (body-language/gestures). At a typical Board meeting or committee meeting all of these skill-sets are used. But, it is how these skill-sets are used that can convey happiness, frustration or anger.

Before you jump to any conclusions, it is important to consider the situation before taking any action and to gather all the facts. Our emotions tend to get in the way of making rational decisions; therefore, it is a good practice to consider the 24-hour rule which simply stated means: “Don’t send out any email message, letter, memo or report to others until you have had time to reflect on the

BOD NOTICE

BOARD MEMBER MESSAGE

issues at hand.” This can’t always take place in a Board room situation; but when it is possible, take a deep breath before sharing your emotions. It is in the best interests of everyone on the Board and in the audience.

Another important skill is to focus on the problem, not on the individual or the personalities of the persons involved. Be careful with your words; choose them properly, and direct them clearly to the audience you are addressing, whether it is homeowners of your association, children at a school event or out in the community taking part in one of Aliante’s social events. Never single out one person, individual group or vendor; it is disrespectful to point fingers with negative feelings. There is a time and place for such behavior and a public meeting is not the place.

One of the keys to good communication is listening. Try to be a better listener. Without listening to what someone is saying and paying close attention to the words and the body language they are using; your messages can be easily misunderstood. This was re-emphasized in a recent class I took talk by Maurice Talley from FirstService Residential. For instance, if you are given the letter i on a sheet of paper, and you are told to put a period on the i… do you place it on the i itself or do you place it above the i? The only instruction you were given was to place a period on the i. Several of us from the SCAL Board attended this class, and I don’t believe all of us really followed the instruction given. Without asking for clarification, do you really know what you are doing? I found this an interesting experiment and there were others as well, which means that listening is a vital part of any communication, especially at a Board meeting. When the Board recently authorized sending out a Request for Proposal (RFP), is that all the Board asked for, or did it mean the Board would send out RFPs, open bids, and then assign a winner to enclose the Breezeway and make expansions?

The seven C’s of effective communication are: “clear, concise, concrete, correct, coherent, complete and courteous.” (From mindtools.com)

Communication is also visual communication which includes speed signs within the community, neighborhood watch signs, posters and signs of upcoming events, email blasts containing this week’s activities in Sun City, or community information, such as a change in zoning regulations and updates on other activities within the community.

Both the Sun City and Aliante Master Communities definitely use the written word to communicate, offering educational articles and interesting topics to the community, including the financial health of the community. Email blasts are also used weekly and on an as-needed basis. In committee meetings, photographs are often used for architectural review and compliance issues; as in this case, the written word is not always the most effective means of communication. The skill-set for effective written communication is to know your audience, know your objective and write accordingly in clear and concise words.

I think one of the most disrespectful types of non-verbal communication is the person who is constantly looking at his phone, whether it is in a meeting or at lunch; it doesn’t matter. It is rude and needs to stop. There are times when it is important to acknowledge a phone message, but most messages can wait 30-60 minutes. Body language is important. Use it properly to be effective.

Good communication skills don’t always come naturally. They take practice, time and patience. Learn from your mistakes. Communication and leadership are learned skills. Effective communicators have experience in taking direction as well as giving direction. Take the time to be understanding and to communicate in a style that will win friends and not create enemies.

It’s time to spring forward! Don’t forget to set your irrigation clock ahead one-hour when daylight saving time begins on March 11 at 2 a.m. This also is a great time to check your irrigation clock’s batteries. Also, please review your last water bill for your assigned watering days by going to www.snwa.com.

March is a good month to get out into the yard and fertilize your trees, shrubs, desert plants and cacti to greatly improve

spring flowering and promote growth in the coming months. Take a good look around the yard and consider replacement plants for the unattractive, nonproductive or diseased plants. Some of the plants in your yard have been there since the house was built and may need replacement. Check to make sure the trees in your yard are trimmed 5’ from the soil to the first branch and back to your property lines, off the streets and sidewalks; and all landscapes should be trimmed back from the mailbox.

Every two years, the residents of Sun City Aliante are asked to fill out an Age Verification Survey that is used to collect the required information to assure protection of the age restricted community status of Sun City Aliante. A 2018 Age Verification Survey will be included in the August issue of The Breeze. We would very much appreciate if you would complete the form and return it to the front desk at your earliest convenience.

Do you own an RV? RVing is great fun. Please remember: when you get home, there are restrictions as to where and how long you can park your recreational vehicle (RV). According to the North Las Vegas City Council, RV parking on residential neighborhoods is limited to 48 hours. Police can issue a $500 fine and tow a vehicle if an RV owner does not move a vehicle within 72 hours. RV Parking is available to Sun City Aliante residents only in the SCAL Parking Lot on a limited basis. Resident parking is not to exceed four times per year for 48 hours each time in a designated area only. The owner’s identification and proof of insurance will be checked. All policies are subject to change as deemed necessary by the SCAL HOA office.

Please turn in your Architectural Review Committee (ARC) applications by 3 p.m. on the Wednesday prior to the ARC meeting. All applications turned in after the cut-off time will be submitted to the next ARC meeting. Once your application is approved, you will have 90 days to complete the project and, at that time, your project will be inspected by the committee. If you have questions, we invite you to stop by the ARC Review Session scheduled the Thursday prior to each ARC meeting. ARC meetings for the month are on March 9 and March 23.

Friendly Reminder: Please don’t place your trash cans at the curb earlier than 6 p.m. on Mondays, and remove them from the street and put them away no later than 6 p.m. on Tuesdays. Trash pickup is every Tuesday and the bulk pick up dates for the month are March 13 and March 27. If you have any questions, please contact me at 702-638-5006 or email [email protected].

Larry Rothstein, Chair, Election Committee

Judith HansonI moved to Las Vegas in the fall of 2006, along my husband Dave and our two beagles at the time, Max and Cisco. I was elected to serve on the Sun City Board of Directors in May of 2008 and received my DCAL (Dedicated Community Associate Leadership) Certificate in May 2009. I have served on this Board as director and been both Board liaison to the Communications Committee, and presently the Lifestyle

Committee, a committee I first joined in 2006.

I was elected to the Master Association Board of Directors in the fall of 2009 and was elected to serve as the Master’s first treasurer. I have served this Board as treasurer, vice-president and president, and I’m not sorry to say, I’ve left the role as president as something I once did. I have been Board liaison to the Social Committee, since the committees were first established at the Master level and, more recently, to the Safety Committee and Finance Committee.

I am active in CAI (Community Association Institute), where in 2011, I won the award for Director of the Year for Southern Nevada. I followed it up in 2013 by receiving DCAL of the Year for all of Nevada. While this award doesn’t target the service, you render your community per-se, it recognizes the work you do on committees for CAI and out in the community, as well as other components which make up the overall framework of the awards themselves. I have served on the membership and magazine committees and also have a voice on CAI’s education committee, its sub-committee. Presently, I am also finishing out my tenure on the Community Association Board of Directors. I am also part of the National Committee of Homeowner Leaders.

I volunteer at Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health and at the Smith Center as a volunteer and a paid usher. My passion is educational events for children, as it is sometimes the only opportunity many of Clark County students have to get into

Wayne HeadrickA resident of Sun City Aliante since 2008, Wayne Headrick was a member of the Board of Directors from 2013 to 2017, and he has maintained his DCAL Certification since earning it in December 2014. As a member of the SCAL Board of Directors, Wayne has served as the Secretary and Board liaison to the Property & Grounds Committee and the Communications Committee. While serving

as the Board liaison to the Communications Committee, he helped design and develop the new Sun City Aliante Community website. Prior to his election to the Board, he worked with the Lifestyle Committee on the development of the current SCAL Community Center Policies and Procedures, served as a member of Property & Grounds Committee and played a major role in designing the Tennis and Pickleball courts complex. In addition, he helped form the Computer, Pickleball and Table Tennis Clubs, and he currently serves as the “accountant/bookkeeper” for the Veterans Club. Wayne is a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel and is a Professor Emeritus of Information Systems at New Mexico State University. He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees from Arizona State University and M.S.I.E. and Ph.D. degrees in

engineering from the University of Missouri.

Mark PallansMark Pallans has a long history with the Sun City Aliante (SCAL) Board of Directors. He was the first homeowner elected to the Board in 2004 and served in many positions including, President of the Board until 2013. He is currently the Vice President of the Aliante Master Association. He and his wife, Gayle, were among the first homeowners

in Sun City, buying their house in 2002 and moving in early 2004. He and Gayle have been active in the community.

Some of the many actions he has taken while serving as a member of the SCAL Board include:

• Obtained thousands of dollars in grant funds from the City to improve SCAL common areas

• Assisted SCAL veterans by meeting with the City and drafting an agreement to fly American flags on community streets on holidays

• Assisted in the design of the SCAL Community Center

• Led a campaign to improve SCAL Community Center rules to

• Harry Reinhart• Ed Sloman

• Mark Smith• Mark Towers

The Smith Center and see a great performance especially tailored just for them. As you can see, I am a strong contender for education, not only in the schools but for Board members as well. I hope that they make it a mandatory requirement that each and every Board member must take a certain amount of course credit to serve on an HOA Board within the state of Nevada.

I am also a past president of Westside Newcomer’s Club. I consider myself very lucky for getting to go around the world with trips to Africa, especially Kenya and Tanzania, and also in South America, including Peru, Ecuador and Brazil. My bucket list of adventures is not going to run out anytime soon, with so many countries yet to explore, including Vietnam, Thailand, Iran and the North and South Caucuses of Asia.

I have six grandchildren, the most recent Oliver, born January of 2016. Four of them live only a mile from me, so I get to enjoy them a lot. My other two live in Indiana, where I moved from and, unfortunately, I do not get to see them very often, especially my oldest who is a sophomore at Purdue University.

allow guests and reduce costs

• Represented SCAL at City Council meetings to protect Sun City from new developments that could have lowered property values. Prevented Park Highlands from increasing zoning density along Aliante Pkwy. and renaming Elkhorn Dr. to Park Highlands Blvd.

• Helped the City draft documents to prevent developers from increasing zoning densities along SCAL common boundaries

• Worked with Councilman Cherchio to create the VIPS (Volunteers in Police Service) program

After leaving the Board, he volunteered to assist in various projects and has maintained contact with the City officials, where he speaks out at City Council and Planning Commission meetings on matters that affect the residents of Sun City and Aliante. Both Mark and Gayle are active life members of the Protectors of Tule Springs, the great new National Monument.

During his career, he served as CEO of a marine electronics company in Florida, Telecommunications Manager for the City of Fort Lauderdale and the Communications Engineering Manager for the Miami-Dade County Police Department. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Currently, he is President/General Manager of a communications consulting firm providing services to first responders and local government agencies, domestically and internationally. His hobbies are amateur radio, photography and skiing.

Mark believes the SCAL Board of Directors is probably the best in the area, but there can still be some improvements. While all members are active, some are not proactive in developing new approaches to topics of interest or community contact. Not all members have good attendance records at Board meetings and other community events. His goals as a Board member are:

• Keep SCAL fiscally sound and not increase assessments and fees; yet, judiciously invest SCAL assets in projects that benefit homeowners and increase the value of their homes

• Listen to homeowners and act on their inputs towards improvements in Sun City

• Assure all homeowners they will continue to live in and enjoy a community that reflects their choice of lifestyle

• Be proactive in the business of running Sun City Aliante by being there when needed and knowing that your voice represents the homeowners and not your own opinion.

Ed SlomanMy name is Ed Sloman, and I retired in December 2014. A Navy veteran, I served on two aircraft carriers as well as in Danang during the Vietnam conflict. My wife, Kris, and I purchased our home in 2012. We have known and loved this community since 2003, as Kris’s parents, Bob and Kay Drewlo live here. I currently serve on the Finance Committee (two years). I also serve on the Ad Hoc Committee to expand the Community

Center. Additionally, I volunteer for Seniors Assisting Seniors (SAS). I have a degree in Urban Planning. I was a homebuilder for 10 years and served as Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer of a civil engineering firm, representing real estate professionals for the remaining 27 years of my career. On a community level, I was a Rotarian and served as President. My other experiences include Riverside County (Calif.) Flood Control Commissioner, Member of Riverside County Integrated Project Committee, Chairman of the Oversight Board to the Successor Agency for the City of Corona Redevelopment Agency and Oversight Vice Chairman to the Successor Agency for Riverside County Redevelopment Agency.

I know that I can bring some fresh ideas to the table. My two years on the Finance Committee has helped me understand all aspects of its operation. My past experience sitting on the dais of the Planning Commission in California has given me the ability to better understand and listen to concerns of people. My goal is to continue making our community better. I would greatly appreciate your vote. Thank you.

Aliante Master AssociationThe next Aliante Master Association Board Meeting will be held on Thursday, March 22 at 7 p.m. in the Master Association’s office at 2760 West Deer Springs Way, Suite #104 in the Aliante Marketplace by the Smith’s grocery store. All Aliante residents are encouraged to attend.

Harry ReinhartI have lived in Sun City Aliante since 2011, and I have watched it grow. As we move into our new building phase, I want to continue to be part of that growth. I have been on the Board of Directors the past two years and have just received my DCAL certificate, which means I have completed over one and a half years of class training on understanding what it means to be a Board Member of an

HOA, as well as the rules and regulations of all HOAS.

I have had two articles published in our Breeze magazine, one on Tule Springs and one on “Who’s your Daddy?” As a Board member I have served on the Communications Committee and the ARC Committee. Before joining the Board, I served in the Neighbor Watch Program and the Master Association Finance committee. In addition, I served as Chairperson of the Property and Grounds Committee, and on our own Finance Committee. My desire is to continue to serve you and our community. I look forward to your vote.

Mark TowersElected to the Sun City Aliante Board of Directors in 2016, Mark has served on the Sun City Aliante Property and Grounds Committee, the Sun City Aliante Architectural Review Committee, the Aliante Master Architectural Review Committee, and he is a member of the Veterans Club. Mark is a Dedicated Community Association Leader (DCAL). Mark and Lynda have been Sun City Aliante homeowner residents since 2006.

Mark serves as a member of the North Las Vegas Citizen’s Patrol, Volunteer of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, Southern Nevada Chapter President for the American Society of Safety Engineers, Construction and General Industry Occupational Safety and Health Authorized Outreach Trainer for the United States Department of Labor, Presenter for the Certified Safety and Health Workshops, Extra Class Accredited Volunteer Examiner for the American Radio Relay League, Radio Operator for the Amateur Radio Emergency Service / Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service and a member of the Clark County Community Emergency Response Team.

He is an experienced corporate operations executive and retired United States Army officer. Mark was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree from The Citadel and a Masters degree in Business Management from Central Michigan University.

I am committed to acting in the best interest of Sun City Aliante, exercising ordinary and reasonable care, identifying risks and adopting policies to prevent harm, and continuously improving Sun City Aliante. I believe in Sun City Aliante.

Mark SmithI am the longest serving board member in the history of our community. I was first elected in November, 2006 when we transitioned to a full homeowner’s board and have served continuously since that time. I have held the offices of president, vice-president and secretary several times and hold a DCAL certification from the Community Associations Institute.

I have been a participant in, and a part of, every decision and accomplishment in our community. I was there and voted in favor of suing the developer (we recovered $125,000 from Pulte) and voted for the original expansion of our clubhouse, the building of the crafts rooms, the construction of the pickle ball and basketball courts, the remodeling of our kitchen, an upgraded sound system in the Vista room, a security system, and much, much more. This was all done without raising our monthly assessment.

The Board, at its January meeting, voted to enclose the breezeway between our two buildings and expand our community center by approximately 3500 square feet. This expansion will keep us competitive with other +55 communities in our area, allow our residents to more fully use and enjoy our beautiful clubhouse and facilities, and make our community much more attractive to prospective buyers. This will undoubtedly increase our property values which will benefit all of our owners. Thanks to the wise investments and financial planning by the Board, of which I was a part, THIS EXPANSION WILL NOT RAISE OUR MONTHLY ASSESSMENT and will be completed with money that was already set aside and dedicated to future improvements in our community. In January, the Board also voted to put lighting in at the Widewing/Elkhorn grassy area with no increase in our monthly assessment.

The key to any successful community is to ensure it is financially secure, that everything is done in the best interests of the entire association, and that everyone is treated fairly and equally. SCAL is very financially secure. Our reserve account is properly funded, our operating account is in excellent shape and our capitalization account continues to grow. The Board is committed to treating all homeowners/residents fairly, equally and respectfully and in keeping the lines of communication open between the Board and our residents. The Board has continuously maintained and enhanced our property values. I AM CERTAIN THAT THERE WILL BE NO INCREASE IN OUR ASSESSMENT THIS YEAR.

I am arguably the most outspoken and forceful speaker at board meetings. I believe it is essential for every director to voice his/her opinion on matters and not sit quietly without contributing anything to the discussion at hand. People may not always agree with me, but everyone will know where I stand on issues and why I feel that way. I don’t merely second motions or move to adjourn meetings.

I graduated from Hunter College in New York City and received my law degree from Brooklyn Law School. I served as the Principal Law Clerk to several New York State Supreme Court Justices from January 1976 to June 1986. In July 1986 my family and I moved to South Florida where I served as an assistant state attorney (the same thing as an assistant district attorney in Nevada) under Janet Reno (who became the first female Attorney General of the United States) and then under Kathy Fernandez Rundle, until July 2006, when I retired from service after twenty years and moved to SCAL.

While an assistant state attorney in Florida, I specialized in prosecuting domestic violence and elderly abuse cases for over six years and then investigated and prosecuted public corruption cases for over ten years. I had the pleasure of putting many wife beaters, elderly abuses, corrupt politicians and corrupt public employees in prison for

their crimes. I was also a member of the Hate Crimes Committee to determine if an individual case met the criteria for being prosecuted as a hate crime.

I have given everything I have to making SCAL the best HOA in Nevada and truly feel that I can continue to contribute to our community and keep it the best HOA there is.

I have brought, and will continue to bring, common sense, practicality, experience, history, integrity and a keen sense of ethics to the Board.

I most humbly and respectfully ask for your support and vote in the coming election.

Respectfully, Mark A. Smith

Neighborhood Watch Monthly Tip: Come to the Safety Expo on March 3rdThe Hollies singing group had a hit song titled “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother.” It’s message is in part about sharing each other’s loads on the “long, long road” of life. In a community such as ours, maybe it’s not about sharing

but “understanding.” In recent years Neighborhood Watch volunteers have been surprised at the number of residents who don’t know their neighbors. Yes, in such a large community there are many comings and goings, but being aware of what is going on around your block can protect you and fellow residents. Taking the opportunity to meet your neighbors will help you understand when something is “not quite right” at a home – maybe papers are piling up or the trash can is not being taken in. Is a neighbor ill, unable to get around?

Sun City Aliante is an active and friendly community. The community center is expanding to handle the growing traffic of residents who attend luncheon presentations, social events, classes, and the many club activities. As members of the community, we all should be responsive to what doesn’t look or feel right. Whether a concern of criminal activity, or realizing a neighbor is not following their normal routine, it is important to say something if you see something.

There are many ways to meet people in our community. Neighborhood Watch offers a good point of personal connection – your block captain. Getting involved in Neighborhood Watch patrol is

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

also a good way to meet people. The patrol is simply a safety patrol, to observe and call for help if needed. We do not chase down criminals or report non-compliance with CC&Rs. If you would like to see what we do on patrol, contact our coordinator, Jim Blossey, to take a ride along.

Put Saturday, March 3rd on your calendar as a great way to meet the volunteers of Neighborhood Watch at the Annual Safety Expo. There will be vendors with many home safety products and services on display as well as other community volunteer organizations. It will be a fun and informative morning from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. – with refreshments and a raffle too.

So as the Hollies sang, “While we’re on the way to there, why not share ….”. Neighborhood Watch volunteers share your concern for the residents of our community. Come to the Safety Expo on March 3rd and meet or find out who your block captain is, and be ready to get a lot of great information to safeguard your home.

For information regarding the Sun City Aliante Neighborhood Watch program, contact our Coordinator, Jim Blossey, at [email protected] or 775-530-5119.

Tee It Up With A ProBy Eric Eubanks, PGAFOOZLETo foozle means to do slipshod work-and when applied to golf it means to hit a really bad shot. From old German, fusel meant to do something in a clumsy manner. Once a very common golf term, it is now making a comeback among many of today’s players. Personally, I like the

word foozle because it kind of sounds like what it means. I certainly have foozled my share of golf shots.

One of the earlier quotes from golf that included the word foozle was when British Prime Minister Arthur Balfour (Prime Minister from 1902-1905) said, “There is always that a bad drive may be redeemed by a fine approach shot, or that a foozle with a brassy may be balanced by some brilliant performance with the iron.”

And in 1969, Jack Nicklaus made good use of the word when, after finishing a mediocre round, he said to a reporter, “I had a 75, which featured a couple of foozled short putts.”

NEWS & NOTESThe Ehlers Recognized at UNLV Lady Rebels GameCecil was recognized for his 80th birthday, and both he and Joann were recognized for their 60th Wedding Anniversary at the January 20 basketball game. They were presented with UNLV gifts and had their picture taken with their favorite player, Brook Johnson.

“We enjoy watching the girls play. They are doing so well in the conference,” Cecil and Joann agreed. “We really like Brooke Johnson; she plays 100 percent every minute.”

“We love the games,” Cecil continued. “They don’t have a big crowd, so we can sit down front and really see the plays. They are also very affordable at $30.”

The Lady Rebels are now tied with the Wyoming Cowgirls for the Mountain West Conference title. Go Rebels!

On January 20, when the Lady Rebels beat the Colorado State Rams at Cox Pavilion, 56-54, Brooke took time out for a photo with Cecil and Joann.

Cecil and Joann recently celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary; they were married on December 29, 1957. (They met on their first day of high school and sat beside each other for some classes.)

Cecil recently celebrated his birthday on January 15 with much fan-fare! There was a birthday party at the SCAL Community Center for Cecil and their many close friends were invited.

The Ehlers moved to Sun City Aliante in February 2006. They both retired after working at the Nevada Test Site. They attend many SCAL Activities Department events, both on and off-property. They also enjoy playing Mexican Train and traveling on Paddlewheel River Boat Cruises. Cecil and Joann are an inspiration and the epitome of active adults in our community.

CHARTER CLUB CORNER & SPECIAL INTERESTPickleball Club News

In late December, the early morning temperatures were hovering in the high 30s to low 40s; but even with the low temperatures, pickleball players were on the courts. Once they are on the courts, it doesn’t take long before players peel off their outer layers of jackets and reach a comfort level in playing.

The January 2, 2018 Life Section of the Las Vegas Review-Journal included an article about pickleball and the Plaza Hotel’s embrace of pickleball. A renovation of its pool and tennis area 18 months earlier included the installation of 12 pickleball courts and a tennis court that can be converted to four pickleball courts.

The article also Included an interview with SCAL pickleball club member, Felton Hyche. Felton said he initially rebuffed his wife’s suggestion to give pickleball a try. But, after some prodding, Felton finally gave the game a try and found that it gave him a good workout and helped him to lose weight and get off of his hypertension medicine. Felton commented that he’s not normally a social person, and he said, “but this game is an extremely social game, because you’ve got four people playing and you’re laughing and joking. It’s wonderful.”

Why not join the Pickleball Club and find out for yourself why this game has become so popular? Watch for announcements with dates for beginner’s free lessons starting in March.

SCAL Steppers Stay Busy

March is here, and Sun City Aliante Steppers continue to enjoy performing and staying active. They recently entertained seniors at Atria Sutton retirement home in Henderson and at Atria Sunlake. Veterans ClubGreetings Friends, Neighbors and Fellow Veterans:

I trust you are enjoying this beautiful weather. Compared to other locations around the country, we are in the lap of luxury. As you know, the annual pancake breakfast was another success, and we were able to raise almost $1,000 for the Auxiliary for their continuing efforts in supporting the U.S. Vets for

the annual “Stand Down.” This is an outstanding event and assists the homeless veterans throughout the Las Vegas area. Many of our veterans are participating in volunteering at the event. The Auxiliary always does a magnificent job, and we are all very proud of their efforts. The date and location for “Stand Down” this year will be announced shortly as the venue has changed. We’ll keep you all informed. It always gives me a great deal of satisfaction to help homeless veterans and provide assistance in any way we can. The March meeting is scheduled to have the election of officers of the club. I will announce them in the April Breeze article.

Once again, I want to thank the residents of Sun City Aliante for their continued support of the Veterans Club and for our men and women in uniform who make all this possible.

Please continue to keep the members of our military in your prayers, and remember them as they are keeping vigil throughout the world.

Sy Nielson

Chairman, Veterans of Sun City Aliante

Veterans AuxiliaryHappy spring to all in Sun City Aliante! Because the Cashman Center has been sold, this year’s “Stand Down” for veterans has been postponed. The veterans groups will advise you when they have a new location/date for “Stand Down.”

The Auxiliary thanks residents for their coupon donations, which are boxed up and sent to the troops overseas, who use them in their base facilities. Members request that you please cut-out the coupons before placing them in the collection box and avoid putting full-page coupon sheets in the box. They appreciate your support.

By the time you receive this issue of The Breeze, the Veterans Club’s Pancake Breakfast and the Auxiliary’s Bake Sale will be over. Here’s hoping you had a fun time!

Shopping for blanket material is on the Auxiliary’s “to do” list this spring, so they’ll have plenty of time to work on the lap blankets for veterans. Members work on the blankets during the year and take them to veterans in the VA Hospital in November or December.

If you like would like to check out the Auxiliary, you are welcome to stop by their meeting held on the third Tuesday of the month at 9 a.m. in the SCAL Community Center. All residents are welcome to attend.

Attention SCAL CaregiversWould you be interested in joining a support group for Caregivers and their loved ones? Would you like to participate in a group where you can share concerns that Caregivers have on a day-to-day basis, information and learn ways to cope with those concerns, etc.?

There is an Interest Sheet at the Front Desk for those who would like to explore this avenue of sharing in our community. Please sign the sheet if you are interested, so that we can present a request to the Lifestyle Committee and Board for consideration for Caregivers to become a Special Interest Group.

CAN CROWDED TEETH KILL YOU? Malocclusion. That’s the word dentists use to identify teeth that are not aligned properly in your mouth. According to the Journal of Dental Research, Malocclusion affects 74% of American adults. If not treated properly, malocclusion can create abnormal amounts of stress on teeth and jaw joints, leading to premature wear, chipping, fracture and jaw pain. An often overlooked aspect of malocclusion is that it can lead to periodontal disease and tooth loss.

Here are some potential issues:

Crowding: Creates pockets of plaque and tarter increasing harmful periodontal bacteria leading to periodontal disease, tooth and bone loss.

Spacing: With extra space between your teeth, food is more likely to get lodged there, leading to sores, tender gums, cavities and periodontal disease.

Edge-To-Edge Bite: When your front upper and lower teeth hit on the edge of the teeth, you risk chipping and breaking, jaw joint pain and ultimately shortened and worn down front teeth.

Other malocclusion issues that your dentist can look for are deep bite, crossbite, excessive overjet and open bites. So how does malocclusion affect our overall health? When bacteria get trapped due to malocclusion, a film forms underneath the gums. Bacteria inflame the gums tissues and kill the cells. Once the bacteria have invaded the connective tissue it has access to blood vessels, causing your immune system to create white blood cells and proteins to fight the inflammation. The combination of bacteria, toxins, white blood cells and acute phase proteins damages the cells that line your coronary arteries, resulting in plaque and leading to hardening of the arteries.

Teeth that are poorly aligned can create unintended stress and pressure on teeth and jaws. These stresses can cause chipping and notching at the gum line called abfractions. Additionally, premature wear can lead to poor root support, loose teeth and eventually, tooth loss.

Straight teeth aren’t just for looks. From ages seven to 70, straightening your teeth can help you have a healthy mouth and keep your teeth for life. If you want to help yourself, your kids, grand kids or friends start on the road to a healthy mouth, start with malocclusion. Ask your dentist about straightening your teeth today.
