From the Head of Junior School Dear Parents

I hope boys, parents and staff enjoyed some holiday time over the past two weeks, away from the morning and afternoon rush, homework, activity and the frenetic pace of daily life. The capacity to spend more time with your children during the holidays is important for parents and children. New Student We welcome one new boy to the school this term. Joseph Ramia (Prep G) commenced his schooling with us this week. I welcome Joseph and his family to the Junior School and wish them all the very best for the future. Staff News During the holidays, Miss Georgia Little was appointed to the position of Sports Secretary / Receptionist. This follows Miss Samantha Brimblecombe’s resignation from this position late last term. Miss Little has worked in the Junior School as a teacher aide and in the office when required for the past five years. Georgia is also studying a Bachelor of Education (part-time). I congratulate Miss Little on her new appointment. Mrs Liz Pratt has been appointed to replace Miss Little, as a teacher aide in Prep G (Monday and Tuesday) and library aide (Wednesday to Friday). Mrs Pratt is well known to the boys and staff as she has worked as a teacher aide in a range of areas within the Junior School this year and I congratulate her on her appointment. Mr Pat Wysel (Year 4 teacher / Groom Housemaster) and his wife, Naomi, celebrated the birth of their third son, Hudson Roderick Wysel during the holidays. Hudson was born on Wednesday 21 September. Mrs Jeanette Morgan (Prep M class teacher) celebrated the marriage of her son, Matthew in the holidays. This is a happy time for the Wysel and Morgan families. Junior School Musical The Junior School musical production ‘Shrek’ occurred in the final week of third term. Every boy from Year 4 to Year 6 was involved in either the massed chorus items or as one of the 22 major or minor leads. Izaak Schefe (Shrek), Harry Gallagher (Fiona) and Jamie Watson (Donkey), all in Year 6, led the cast in a wonderful production across a matinee and three evening performances. Congratulations to the Director, Miss Michelle McCorkindale, the staff and boys involved in bringing Shrek to the stage for the enjoyment of so many people.

Works Typically, not a great amount of major work occurs during the September / October holidays, with this being held over until the Christmas holidays. However, over the past two weeks some not insignificant maintenance occurred with the Prep / Year 1 playground equipment, replacing or upgrading various components. Public Speaking Competition The annual Public Speaking Competition commenced this week and will conclude at the end of the third week of this term. Class teachers announced topics in class yesterday, so at this stage boys should be underway with their planning and preparations. Every boy in the school participates in this competition and will be required to prepare and deliver a speech to his class on a specific topic. The aim of this competition is for the boys to work on the real life skill of speaking in front of an audience. It is also expected that the speeches are very much the boys’ work. A trophy and book voucher are awarded for first place in each class, a medallion for second and third place and several highly commended certificates are also awarded in each class. The medallions and certificates will be awarded at an assembly later in the term and the first place trophies are awarded at Speech Day. The boys in Year 6 also compete for the McKee Trophy for Public Speaking, which is a perpetual trophy that is also awarded at Speech Day. I wish all the boys good luck for this important academic pursuit. Term Four Calendar A calendar of the term’s activities has been sent home this week. There are several important events that occur towards the end of the term and I encourage parents to note these in their diaries and calendars at home. Regards Scott Campbell Head of Junior School

From the Deputy Head of Junior School Nude Food Day We are hoping to nominate one day each school week as a Nude Food Day in the Junior School. We will start with a trial day on Tuesday 18 October. The boys at the Junior School will be encouraged to bring to school food that is not prepacked for morning tea and lunch. There are two main reasons for implementing this idea. One is to promote healthy eating, good nutrition and limit the intake of processed foods. The other reason is environmental, where the amount of wrapping (paper/plastic) used is reduced. We hope that parents will support this initiative. Food ideas include pieces of fruit and vegetables, salads, sandwiches, pasta, wraps and ham & cheese roll-ups.

We’re for the gorilla. Are you? Your reliance on technology can impact wildlife. Many mobile phones contain coltan which is in huge demand for today’s high tech devices. Some coltan is illegally mined in gorilla habitat in Africa. By recycling your mobile phone through Taronga’s “They’re calling on you” campaign you’ll be reducing the demand for coltan, saving your phone from landfill and raising money for gorilla conservation.

Recycle your old mobile phone to help gorillas in the wild. Please drop off your old mobile phone at the front office. All the money raised from recycling your old phone supports vital gorilla conservation projects in Africa through the Jane Goodall institute. For further information please refer to: Taronga.org.au/callingonyou

Sipping water The brain is 80% water and students who sip water at least every 20 minutes while studying hydrate their brain, improving their ability to focus, concentrate and stay motivated when it comes to homework. Boys at the Junior School are encouraged to keep a bottle of water on their desk during school hours.

From the Head of Teaching and Learning NAPLAN analysis Numeracy achievement in both Year 3 and Year 5 has improved steadily over the last 3 years. All subsets of numeracy were above both state and national means, with strengths shown especially in number and spatial concepts. In the next 12 months, our area of focus will be in the teaching of spelling. Whilst these results are consistently at or above state and national averages, we haven’t seen the breadth of improvement in this area compared to other areas in our school results. Overall, we had another wonderful NAPLAN year and will use the results to continue to refine and inform our teaching processes. Term 4 Teaching and Learning For many of the teachers, Term Four is an extension from Term Three, as they ready their portfolios of student work for final assessments and reports. In both Learning Support and Academic Extension, we will be focussing upon entering new students into programs in relation to NAPLAN results and end of term assessments. This process allows the support team the opportunity to proactively intervene with boys before the end of the school year in preparation for 2017. I was pleased to attend many parent/teacher interviews last term to give additional feedback on the progress of individual boys. Again, should you have any questions regarding the academic achievement of your son for the remainder of the school year, please consult your son’s teacher in the first instance.

What is differentiation? Differentiation is a long word that sounds complicated but it just means teachers plan for the children who are actually in their class, instead of designing lessons for their idea of the “average” child. It is the means by which schools fulfil their legal obligations to provide a quality education to all students. This includes Indigenous students, students from other language backgrounds, gifted students or those with disability. Differentiation is about teachers providing choice to avoid discriminating against students who may be disadvantaged by “one size fits all” approaches. This does not mean creating different lessons for every student. It does mean that students with expressive language difficulties or dyspraxia, for example, who experience difficulties with writing are given the opportunity to demonstrate their learning in other ways. It may also mean that teachers deliberately moderate instructional pace and linguistic complexity to account for students with language impairment and/or attentional difficulties (eg attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). It does not mean that they engage in only one teaching method, or that they devise different lessons for every child. Rather, they employ the most appropriate methods at the most appropriate times. All teachers in the Junior School employ methods of differentiation throughout their classrooms, which are documented and considered during planning.

I would like to thank the staff at the Aquatic Centre for the delivery of the Learn to Swim Programme. Thank you to all the staff for supporting this programme and encouraging the boys. After watching the boys at the carnival we are seeing the benefits of the boys swimming each week. Sport Term 4 School sport for boys in Year 4 - Year 6 will commence tomorrow. Full draws will be sent home as soon as we have had them finalised by Toowoomba Primary School Sport. Training times and venues will be arranged this week. Swimming Swimming for the boys in Prep – Year 3 will commence next week and will finish at the end of week 7. The Aquatic Centre staff will reassess the boys’ swimming ability again this term. Boys will be informed closer to the date when they have their trials. Mr Darren Stewart and I will conduct the trials. Prep and Year 1 Gymnastics The Prep and Year 1 classes will be travelling to All Stars Gymnastics as a part of their weekly sport this term. A program has been designed for boys of this age and the centre will provide instructors to coach the boys. Track and Field Good luck to Charlie Bragg and Charlie Randall who are competing at the State Primary School Track and Field Carnival in Brisbane in Week 3. Both boys were selected in the Darling Downs team last term. Good luck boys. GPS Track and Field The Junior GPS Track and Field Carnival is on Thursday 27 October at QSAC in Brisbane. Boys selected to compete at this Carnival will be emailed with their events listed in Week 3. Aquathlon Boys who wish to compete at the Darling Downs Aquathlon trials on Friday 28 October need to nominate with me ASAP. I will nominate boys on Monday 17 October as I am away at State Track and Field when the nominations are due. This event is open to boys born in 2005 or 2006. The boys will need to be able to run 1km, swim 200m and finish with another 1km run. Representative Selection Congratulations to Hayden Kenny who was selected in the Darling Downs Basketball team and attended the State Carnival earlier this year. Hayden had a wonderful time and is enjoying playing in the representative tournaments.

Night of Notables

The Year 6 Big Thinking Project (BTP) group will be hosting a “Night of Notables” on Thursday 3 November.

The students have been researching famous Australian migrants throughout Term 3. During the “Night of Notables”, the students adopt the persona of their famous Australian and are required to answer any questions presented to them as this person. They have also created display boards and tables to best represent the lives and achievements of their chosen person. You are invited to join us for the evening. Tea, coffee and light refreshments will be served. The event will be held in the Junior School Hall, commencing at 6.00pm. Please RSVP to the front office by Thursday 27 October, 2016 to assist with catering. Lucy MacFarlane Academic Extension

Chess Championship The Junior School’s chess prowess was again on display at the Toowoomba Primary Schools Teams Chess Championship which was held on Tuesday 6 September at Toowoomba Anglican College and Preparatory School. We had the largest contingent of students present on the day with 43 boys taking part in 11 teams; 20 of these boys were in Years 1 to 3. There were a total of 104 teams present on the day. The TGS (1) team (Sam Gladwin, Oliver Clifford, Paul Jacob and Nicholas O’Sullivan) achieved 1st place for the third year in a row, securing a place at the State Championships in Brisbane in October. The TGS (2) team (Ethan Mullins, Noah Taylor, Jeremy Zuyderwyk and Matthew Dunn) finished in 4th, also earning a place at the State Championships. Of special note was the TGS (8) team which consisted of 4 boys in Year 2 (Will Davidson, Cadel Hardgrave, George Clifford, Kurt Seckler). This team achieved a position of 29th out of the 104 teams. They were recognised with an Outstanding Achievement award for this spectacular effort. Overall we had 7 teams finish in the top 50 with 3 of those in the top 10. This has probably been the most successful teams tournament that I have witnessed in the three years that I have been Chess Co-ordinator and our prospects for the next few years are looking very bright.
