From the Head of Junior School Dear Parents We concluded last term with four performances of our P – 6 musical, Madagascar. The musical was very well received and was a credit to the combined efforts of every member of the Junior School staff and all boys from Prep to Year 6. While we hold a musical every second year, it is quite some time since we had a full school production featuring every child. I thank the boys for their fine efforts and all our staff for bringing Madagascar together. I particularly acknowledge the Directors, Mrs Jayne Davidson and Mrs Kellie Dixon, our music teachers for leading the production. I hope you enjoyed one or more of the performances.

If you have a younger son you wish to enrol in 2019 or 2020, I encourage you to contact the School promptly. The same applies should you have friends or relatives seeking to do the same. Toowoomba Grammar School Information Morning An Information Morning will be held this Saturday, 13 October. This will include tours of both the Junior School and Senior School, with the morning commencing at 9.30am in Old Hall. If you have friends or relatives wishing to learn more about the School you might mention the Information Morning to them.

The Power of Young People In the middle of last term one of our Year 6 students, Ben Morris (6J), emailed me with a fundraising request. Ben asked me to consider supporting drought relief, given the impact of the ongoing drought in large parts of Queensland and New South Wales. I subsequently met with Ben and some of his friends to discuss the concept further. When we met, Ben mentioned the impact of the drought on his grandparents’ property and that he had written his email with his father’s support. In some schools, the story would have concluded by now, with little or no action as the adults are assumed to be the keepers of all the good ideas. Ben’s concept progressed, with the support and encouragement of his peers, staff and his parents. Bliss Bierhoff, President of the Junior School Supporters’ Group further developed the concept, taking Ben’s casual clothes day and gold coin donation and adding a meal deal to the package. I thank Bliss Bierhoff and members of the Supporters’ Group for their assistance with the barbeque and catering. Ben promoted his fundraiser at an assembly and also set a dollar target of $800. To put this in perspective, normally a casual clothes day raises in the vicinity of $350. The end result was a very successful day with our Junior School community responding generously, contributing $783. Not only was Ben Morris’s fundraising day a success, it also highlights the power of young people to make change and contribute to society. Congratulations Ben!

clothes fundraising day. Public Speaking Competition The annual Public Speaking Competition commenced this week and will conclude at the end of the third week of term. Class teachers announced topics in class on Tuesday, so at this stage boys should be underway with their planning and preparations. Every boy in the School participates in this competition and will be required to prepare and deliver a speech to his class on a specific topic. The aim of this competition is for the boys to work on the real life skill of speaking in front of an audience. It is also expected that the speeches are very much the boys’ work. A trophy and book voucher are awarded for first place in each class, a medallion for second and third places along with highly commended certificates. The medallions and certificates will be awarded at an assembly later in the term and the first place trophies are awarded at Speech Day. The boys in Year 6 also compete for the McKee Trophy for Public Speaking, which is a perpetual trophy that is also awarded at Speech Day. I wish the boys all the best for this important academic pursuit.

Term Four Calendar A calendar of the term’s activities was sent home this week. There are several important events that occur towards the end of the term and I encourage parents to note these in their diaries and calendars at home. Regards Scott Campbell Head of Junior School

From the Deputy Head of Junior School Uniform There will be some impromptu uniform inspections within the Junior School throughout the term. We have found many of the boys do not regularly clean their black school shoes and some do not have the correct hat or in the upper primary, are not wearing a belt. It would be appreciated if you could ensure that your son attends school with clean shoes and the correct uniform. It is also important that the boys bring their sport clothes on the day that their class has a PE lesson. There are also occasions when an individual child does not participate in their PE Lesson because of illness or injury. Communication from parents to either the classroom teacher or PE teacher informing that the child is not participating would be appreciated. Water bottles There is a body of research that indicates being well hydrated has a range of health benefits. This includes the capacity for children and adults to concentrate and cope more effectively with the cognitive demands of work and school. To support this, Junior School boys are permitted to keep their water bottles with them in their classrooms, either on their desks or on a cabinet. We encourage boys to bring water bottles with them to school each day. Mike Sharpe Deputy Head of Junior School

From the Head of Teaching and Learning GPS Academic Day of Excellence The annual GPS Day of Excellence will be held next week at Ipswich Grammar School and Brisbane Boys’ College. There will be eight workshops conducted on the day and we will be sending two boys to each workshop. The workshops will cover a variety of areas including Writing, Engineering, Drama, History, Mathematics, Robotics, How the Brain Functions and Catapult building. The accompanying teachers and I will be able to move between the groups and witness our boys being challenged to think creatively and critically. The History group will create a photographic montage of historical and architectural facts in the Ipswich area. As part of the Robotics workshop, the boys will construct and programme a rescue robot. Some boys will build a working re-creation of Leonardo da Vinci’s 15th Century catapult while others will explore the hidden maths behind games and sports. Learning about how the human brain works will involve some dissections! Jan Heffernan Head of Teaching and Learning

The students have been researching famous Australians authors throughout Term 3. During the “Night of the Notables”, the students adopt the persona of their famous Australian and are required to answer any questions presented to them as this person. They have also created display boards and tables to best represent the lives and achievements of their chosen person. You are invited to join us for the evening. Tea/ coffee and light refreshments will be served. The event will be held in the Junior School Hall, commencing at 6.00pm. Please RSVP to the front office by Thursday 1 November, 2018 to assist with catering. Lucy MacFarlane Academic Extension
