The answer to the renovate or move question, will be different for everyone as it depends on so many factors - for each homeowner it will be a personal choice. Some homeowners may have purchased a property with the intention of renovating and building on, while others may have bought a property that was perfect for them at the time, but now no longer meets the requirements of their growing family.Both options have their pros and cons, but there are a few steps that homeowners can follow to help them tackle the renovate-or-move question.

When renovating, the first step would be to do research and determine the value of the house as well as the amount needed to complete the necessary renovations. This amount must include all costs involved in the renovation, such as materials and the cost of the builder. It is a good idea to add an additional 10% to that amount for any unsuspected overruns in cost. Once the final figure has been determined,

homeowners can then compare other properties in that price bracket.

Homeowners may find a property within the same price range that meets all their requirements or perhaps one that has even more for example, an extra room, a larger garden or one situated in a better neighborhood. They may also find nothing that they like in that price range which would mean that staying where they are and renovating would be the better option. Either way, once they look at other comparable properties that are on the market, the decision will become a lot clearer.

Ano the r impo r t an t a spec t t ha t homeowners should consider when renovating is over capitalizing and over pricing the home in comparison to properties throughout the rest of the neighborhood. If homes in a particular neighborhood are selling for N$600 000 and the homeowner spends N$200 000

on improvements, they may not be able to necessarily sell their home for N$800 000.

Many homeowners won't recoup all the money that they spend on renovations when selling their home. However, the decision to renovate may not always be for the purpose of increasing the value of the home for resale, but rather to improve the home for the current occupants. It's a decision that is not always determined by cost, but rather by emotion.

When all is said and done, both options have their pros and cons, and both options can essentially give homeowners the home of their dreamsWhen renovation is the better option:• You love the location of your home and

the neighborhood• You can tolerate living in a construction

site or moving out of the house for a while

• You want to have complete creative control

• You have a reliable building contractorWhen moving is the better option:• You want to change your location for

example, in search of better schools or a shorter distance to the office

• You can't face the disruption of a renovation

• Renovations will cause your home to be overpriced for your area

So when all is clarified and weighed up, it comes down to you - migration or innovation?

When people decide they no longer want to live together, be married or remain partners with each other a major component thereof is the issue of how to handle their children when they are no longer living together.

It is quite common for parents to have strong feelings about which of them will have custody and when or under what circumstances the other parent should spend time with the children.

Because fee l ings of anger, disappointment, and fear of change goes hand in hand with the decision to separate or divorce, those feelings can often overshadow a parent's ability to discuss and resolve the issues in a manner serving the best interests of the children.

The most typical response to the conflict is to hire a lawyer to” fight” on their behalf and represent them in court. Sadly, litigation typically escalates the conflict that exists between the parents. Child custody orders can be issued by the court, but meaningful resolution is impossible in a process that is by its very nature adversarial- where both sides “fight” to “win” leaving the other side to

“lose”, “letting the court decide”“Fighting” parents so often loose sight of the fact that in the process a judge or a magistrate has to make some of the most important decisions on behalf of children who are unknown to him or her.

In addition to turning over complete control of vitally important decisions to be made on behalf of the children, parent's also loose sight of the effect of litigation on whatever family s t ruc tu re w i l l r emain a f te r separation. Litigation is extremely stressful and takes i ts tol l , emotionally as well as financially, on the entire family.

Whilst parent are divorcing or separating from each other they are never divorcing their children. Both parents will continue to have a relationship with them for the rest of their lives.

It is essential for parents to determine what lies ahead in order to ensure that children have a relatively normal life, good interaction with both parents and other family members and have both parents involved in the important happenings and decisions in their lives.

If that cannot be achieved the reality is that children will be torn between two bickering parents who detest each other or have nothing but animosity towards each other. Surely that can not be beneficial to either the children or their parents who will continue to suffer the effects of the “custody battle” long after the matter is no longer in court.

In most instances whatever anger and animosity exists when the “battle” begins becomes even worse when the one “wins” and the other one “loses” and only bitterness remains.

The reason for going to court so often is because the one parent wants the court to know how “bad the other parent is and find validity for their own perception that the whole cause of the “battle” in the first place is the “fault' of the other party. But unfortunately that simply does not happen in the way it is expected as the judge or magistrate does not have a magic wand to make everyone live happily ever after. What happens in a court room is often in the end considered not to be kind or even fair.

400g - 500g hake, kabeljou or kingklip2t (10ml) seasoned sea salt2T (30ml) flourCanola oil2 onions, finely sliced into rings½ cup (125ml) water½ cup (125ml) cider or white wine vinegar1t (5ml) turmeric1t (5ml) seasoned sea salt1 x 200ml yogurt with 1T curry mixFresh corianderCut the fish into bite sized pieces and season with salt.

Heat oil in a frying pan, coat the fish in flour and fry for about ten minutes or until cooked. Set aside. Combine the onions, vinegar, water, turmeric and salt in a saucepan and bring to the boil.

Place cooled fish in a deep casserole or large jar and pour the sauce over.

Refrigerate for 24 hours.

Serve with curried yoghurt and fresh coriander.

It’s the merry month of May and time to plant winter and spring bulbs. Apart from a lack of space not everyone wants to plant these beauties outside, but would like to enjoy their graceful presence indoors. Is that possible?Yes, with certain types it is. LET THEM “SIT” PRETTY on pebbles. This method is called “forcing” the bulbs to create a festive scene in your home in the midst of winter, adding frangrance and beauty. The following types are suitable for this purpose and should be available at your local garden center as well as at certain supermarket outlets during this month. NARCISSUS AND DAFFODILS Layer the bottom of a shallow container with 5 – 6cm of pebbles and place the bulbs on top of the these, pushing down gently to settle them. Try to fit in as many bulbs as possible so that they are nearly touching and filling the container. Planting them closely provides support for the growing plants, helping them to stay upright with a little help from their friends.

Fill in around the bulbs with gravel or pebbles to secure them in the container, leaving the tips of the bulbs above the gravel or pebbles. Now cover the pebbles in the bottom of the

container with water, barely allowing it to touch the bottom of the bulbs.Place the container in a room with bright, indirect light where the temperature remains about 16 degrees Celsius. Move the bulbs to a southern window when they are 5 -6cm tall in about two weeks. Refill water in the bottom of the container as needed, using care no t to cover the bulbs with water. Once they begin to bloom in 4 to 8 weeks, take them away from direct sunlight and into the coolest room in your home to prolong the blooming period and keep blooms fresh. SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT TULIPS – they need more space (depth), so your initial lining of pebbles will be 10 – 12cm. Tulips support themselves better and it is not necessary to plant them so close together, therefore a narrower container can be used. A can fruit jar for example, should you want to plant a single tulip. Once again, the bulb should not touch the water, roots grow down towards the water and should be noticeable in 6 – 8 weeks. Unlike Narcissus and Daffodils, Tulips should be kept in a DARK COOL space until it begins to bud in 12 – 16 weeks. Now only move it to a sunnier

(or lighter) place in the home. Rotate the container every two days to keep the plant

growing straight rather than towards the light

source. H Y A C I N T H BULBS (MRS “BOO-KAY”) – are also fat and sturdy, needing

a thicker layer of pebbles when using a larger container or dish. They can easily be “planted” by simply sitting them snugly on top of a glass jar with a smaller opening. You can still fill the jar with pebbles to add a touch of class. Hyacinths must be cold treated by keeping them for two weeks in the refrigerator to enable root growth, prior to forcing. Like with tulips, keep them in a cool dark space until the leafs are actively growing. Only now move them to a location where it won’t get warmer than 16 degrees Celsius. Within three weeks your bulbs will be in full bloom. IN ALL CASES – maintain the water level, adding Efekto’s Wondersol range of liquid plant food after budding. SOIL PREPARATION FOR PLANTING IN THE GARDEN Prepare beds with ample compost and Efekto’s Vitaboost organic pellets.
