From the Principal’s Desk A very warm welcome to the 2019 school year to all College
families. Whether you are joining us for the first time, or are a
returning family, I hope that 2019 is a fruitful and rewarding
year for your children. It has been a real pleasure to return
from my year’s leave to see our students commencing school
with such a positive attitude and energy to learn.
Congratulations to our class of 2018, who achieved some
outstanding results. Varun Jahagirdar was the College Dux and
he earned an ATAR of 99.7, placing him in the top 0.3% of the
state’s graduates. Proxime, Priyanshu Malik earned 98.75,
placing him in the top 1.25% of state graduates. The boys will
now study in the field of medicine and science. 20% of our
ATAR cohort achieved ATAR above 90, which is outstanding and
testament to the hard work and commitment of them, their
families and their teachers. Students have received university
offers in the areas of medicine, nursing, education, science,
medical sciences, fashion. 85% of graduates received a
university offer at a West Australian university. Our vocational
students have also gone on to achieve apprentice or
traineeships with local industry with an excellent success rate.
Well done to all students!
Four new staff have commenced at the College in 2019 and
they have already demonstrated how well they will fit in with
our students and staff. Mr Adrian Correia has commenced as
Deputy Principal of Years 7, 9 and 11. Mr Jason Bradley has
joined us as the new HOLA Health and Physical Education,
Mr William Gaylard has commenced as a Design and
Technology teacher and finally, Mrs Jan Lakeman takes up the
position as Food Technology Assistant. Welcome, to each of
them.
Year 7s have commenced their first weeks of secondary school
in a very positive way. Starting high school can be daunting;
navigating timetables, lockers and laptops, along with meeting
so many new teachers. They have begun very well and are
certainly a lovely group of young people to welcome into our
community.

It was great to see so many parents at the Year 7 Parent Night on Thursday also, ensuring that we can
meet as many parents as possible. Year 7 Camp is not far away, I’m not sure whether it’s the students
or the teachers who are more excited about spending four days in Coral Bay.
Last Monday, we celebrated our College Opening Mass with Father Tai leading the celebration.
Father Tai, our new Parish Priest, will be in Karratha for the next 6 years and we look forward to
seeing him regularly in the school. He has already demonstrated his ability to solve a Rubik’s Cube in
just a couple of minutes, some amazing piano playing and is keen to get to know our students well. I
know that staff and students will make Father Tai welcome in our community.
It was a pleasure to observe part of the Senior Leadership Day, held Tuesday last week, facilitated by
Mr Correia and our House Coordinators. Students participated in sessions on our new Positive
Behaviours for Learning program, creating a leadership vision statement for future planning, public
speaking, team building and servant leadership. This day will help our student leaders clarify their
vision for our College and continue to implement core values across all areas of our school. Thank you
to the House Coordinators for their work in preparing for the day, particularly in ensuring that the
sessions were so relevant to our students.
Our Community AGM was held this week, with reports from our School Board regarding finance,
Principal and P&C. A number of new members were elected to both the College Board and P&C
committee and are shown below.

allows us to regularly update parents on the activities within our College, making sure that you see
some of the things students are up to during each school day.
Lastly, I would like to thank all of the staff of our College for the smooth and positive start to the year.
This year I have challenged all students to BE PROUD and I am pleased to say that many are already
showing me this in action – from arriving at class promptly, to wearing the uniform with pride,
ensuring that we have no rubbish lying around the grounds and greeting others with a smile and a
caring attitude. We are looking forward to an amazing year ahead.

Deputy Principal’s Address
Making the decision to move my family to Karratha was not an easy one, however three weeks into
the school year I could not be happier. I have been genuinely impressed by the entire St Luke’s
community. The commitment of the staff, the openness of the students and the warm reception I
have received from the wider community has been wonderful to experience and made me feel very
welcome. This truly is a special school doing excellent work in the Pilbara region. I am very excited
about the year ahead and look forward to forming educational partnerships with you all.
The school year has gotten off to a flying start with a jam packed schedule of events specially
designed for the development of the pupils of St Luke’s College.
Student Leadership Day
St Luke’s College is developing a Student Leadership model that looks to build the capacity of students
and provide them with the skills to serve their community. The aim of the day was to get the students
to focus on building their understanding and awareness of leadership. The day was facilitated by our
House Coordinators and included sessions on team building, public speaking, creating vision
statements, positive behaviours for learning and servant leadership. The students were fantastic and
were eager to create a positive legacy that will contribute to the positive culture within the College. It
was amazing to see the enthusiasm, ideas and mature conversations held by the group, I look forward
to seeing them all grow as a team throughout the year.
Year 7s
What an amazing first few weeks for the new students to our College. They have been truly
remarkable in the way they have approached the start of their high school life. Creating a smooth
transition for year 7s is a priority for the College with several enjoyable experiences designed to
ensure they feel safe and comfortable in their new environment. Year 7 Transition coordinator Brent
McDonald does an amazing job facilitating a yearlong programme designed to cater for all their
pastoral needs. While the House Coordinators, PCG teachers and Year 10 Peer Support leaders are
always available to provide support.
There is always something happening in Year 7, this week, the cohort participated in their Retreat,
which focused on strong relationships with each other and God. The fun doesn’t stop there as they get
ready to travel to Coral Bay next week for their camp. Four days of wonderful adventure awaits them
and I, for one, am very excited for what the week has installed for us.
Year 11s
Well done to our Year 11 students who have quickly adapted to the increased demands of WACE
courses. Students will begin their first assessments for each of their subjects in the coming weeks, this
will provide them with a fair indication if they are in the right courses and WACE pathway. Any student
wishing to make a subject change must do so by the end of week 5, otherwise they will have to
remain in all courses until the end of Semester One.
There will be a Year 11 Student and Parent Information night on Thursday 7 March at 6pm in
Fortescue. The meeting will be an ideal opportunity for me to meet all Year 11 parents and go through
essential information regarding WACE.

Deputy Principal’s Address
Welcome to 2019 and a particularly warm welcome to the students, families and staff joining us for the
first time this year. As usual it has been a very busy start to the New Year, especially for our Year 7
students and our Year 12s readying themselves for their final year of secondary school.
In our first week back this year, I was lucky to escort a dedicated group of our Year 11 and 12 students
studying ATAR courses through ViSN (Virtual School Network), to Perth to experience university life by
staying at St Thomas More Residential College across the road from UWA. Students were able to meet
with teachers and students who will be in their online classes for the year. ViSN is a network of Catholic
Education schools that work together to develop and deliver online courses. This year, nine Year 11 and
eight Year 12 ATAR courses are on offer to Catholic Education students across the state.
Could I please ask that you check you have access to SEQTA Engage? It is here that you will be able to
follow your child’s progress and see any assessments, homework, course outlines and resources
teachers upload. If you are experiencing any difficulties please email or call the school so that we may
talk you through problems or resend login credentials. Any students unable to access SEQTA Learn
should also be emailing requests for login credentials. I would hate you to fall behind in class.
I would like to remind parents that students are not allowed on their mobile phones during the course
of the school day. If a student is sick or there is a change to their afternoon pick up, please ring or
email the College for a message to be forwarded. Often students are coming to the office telling us that
they are going home sick and that mum or dad is on the way. Or a parent will turn up to pick up a child
and we know nothing about them being unwell. Sometimes a short lie-down in our sick room, a
paracetamol or a reassuring chat with our friendly staff is all that is needed before they return to class.
If the problem persists, staff will ring the parents to collect their child.
We have OLNA (Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessments) in Week 5 and 6 this term for students in
Years 10 -12, who have not yet reached Band 8. Students in Year 12 are given an extra literacy or
numeracy class to help them achieve Band 8 this term and lessons have been added to Education
Perfect to help students in Years 10 and 11. Please contact me if you have any questions about OLNA.
Finally, we are looking forward to the Year 11/12 Shanghai Nights Ball this Saturday at the Leisureplex.
Stay tuned for some photographs of our dashing young men and beautiful young women. I’d like to

Religious Education
Blessings All,
Welcome back to the 2019 school year. It promises to be another year of exciting events for our
whole school. In these first two weeks back the Year 7 students have celebrated their first Mass as
high school students and attended the Year 7 Retreat.
The 2019 Retreat and Mass bus permission form were handed out last week during PCG, if your child/
children did not receive this note please direct them firstly to their PCG teacher, myself or the front
office to collect another note. If you have not already returned the note please ensure that it is signed
and returned to school as soon as possible. The beauty of the one form means that you won’t receive
multiple notes whenever your child/children leave school grounds for house masses and retreats
during 2019.
On Monday 11 February we celebrated the 2019 opening school Mass with our new Parish Priest,
Fr Tai Trinh. Fr Tai will be in our Parish Priest for six years and comes to us from Geraldton where he
was the chaplain at Nagle Catholic College. He already has impressed the students with his Rubik’s
Cube talents and the melodic piano playing at the whole school Mass. We have also heard that he is a
talented soccer player and is looking forward to joining in soccer games with our students. We can
expect to see Fr Tai around the grounds of St Luke’s during 2019 in his chaplaincy role.
It was during the opening Mass that the Year 12 Executive and the House Captain badges were
blessed and presented. House Councillor and Peer Support
badges will be presented to students during their respective
house assemblies. Thank you to the parents who attended, it is
always lovely to have you attend the masses. Families and
Parishioners are always welcome to join us for masses. Please
remember to sign in at the front office if you are attending.
The Year 7 Retreat was held on Thursday 21 February. Students
began the day celebrating Mass at St Paul’s Parish Church then
headed to Frank Butler Centre for the remainder of the day.
Students participated in activities run by Mr McDonald, Mrs
Sladen and myself. Students had the opportunity to participate
in prayer, learn more about the person of Jesus, participate in
team building activities and learn about social justice and the
special liturgical season of Lent.
This year in the Religion department we welcome Ms Brooke Pollard, who is teaching the Year 12
ATAR Religion and Life course, Mr Ciaran Doherty who is teaching the Year 12 General Religion and
Life course, Mrs Alanna Otway and Mr Wayne Sharpe, who are both teaching a Year 8 and 9 religion
class.
Returning in 2019 is Mrs Harriet Cohn, Ms Eileen Nic Griana, Mr Brent McDonald, Mrs Petrina Sladen,
Mrs Carly Kinch and myself. As a team we have already discussed some different and exciting ideas
which will be implemented during 2019, watch this space. We are truly blessed at St Luke’s to have a
team of passionate educators teaching in the Religious Education field and look forward to working
with all of them during the year.

Year 7 Transition at St Luke’s College 2019
St Luke’s College are very pleased to welcome our new Year 7 students and their families to our school
community. There was a sense of nervousness and excitement as students waited to for their first set
of instructions and their lessons to begin.
The Year 7 students have spent the first week of school becoming familiar with their new school,
meeting new friends and teachers with the support of a committed group of “Year 10 Peer Support
Leaders” - thank you to Ms Tipa for organising the Peer Mentors. It has been a big change for most
students and they should all be commended on the way they have embraced the change.
As well as getting to know their new students, teachers have been busy ascertaining where students
are at in terms of curriculum. Curriculum in Year 7 at St Luke’s College is about developing basic skills
and developing a love of learning in the students. The curriculum allows students to make the
transition between primary and high school with ease. If you feel that your child is struggling please
do not hesitate to speak to your child’s PCG teacher and/or subject teacher and of course I am always
available as Year 7 Coordinator.
On Thursday 14 February, the College held a Year 7 Parent Information Evening. It provided an
excellent opportunity to network and highlight important information that supports our new students
in their transition year at St Luke’s College. Thank you to all the parents who attended our evening.
We hope that you found the evening informative.
As the transition program evolves during the year we look forward to seeing students mature and
develop new skills that are essential for them to become successful learners in the future. In the
meantime, the Year 7 community and staff will look forward to the camp at Coral Bay next week.

Peer Support
The Peer Support Program is officially up and running for the year with Year 10 Peer Support Leaders
having completed their training days and the commencement of the first Peer Support session with our
new Year 7 students.
The Peer Support Program is a peer led, skills based, experiential learning program. It encourages
peer connections throughout the school and assists students in developing practical skills to enhance
social and emotional wellbeing.
Students in Year 7 work in small groups with at least two Peer Leaders. Peer Leaders facilitate a series
of activities with Year 7 students covering a range of skills and
concepts.
Moving into secondary school presents a significant change to
students as they adjust to a new environment. The Year 7
students are provided with opportunities to get to know one
another and their Peer Leaders. The activities are designed to
assist students in becoming familiar and confident with their
school, teachers and new routines.
You can support your child by asking what they have
learned in Peer Support and encouraging ongoing
communication between your child, home and school.

Year 7 Humanities Class
To develop an understanding of what an archaeologist is, our Year 7 HASS students undertook an
excavation using chocolate chip cookies. Our team of archaeologists stumbled on a site (cookies) that
was full of ancient artefacts (choc chips). They had the task of carefully excavating the fragile
artefacts so they could be examined, catalogued and eventually sent to a museum (their tummies).
The more whole the artefacts are, the better chance we would have to draw
conclusions about the civilisation, and our team did just that.

Congratulations!
Congratulations to Sarah Langley (Year 9) who was recently selected for the WA under 14 Girls Rugby
League team and to Jade Adams (Year 10) who was selected to attend the Australian Youth Water
Polo Championships over the Christmas holiday period. Both students should be extremely proud of
themselves and what they have been able to achieve. We look forward to seeing what you get up to
next.

Careers
A warm welcome back to 2019!
Term 1 is well under way with students attending their new subject areas and pathways. It can be a
daunting time for Year 11 students adapting to their new pathway, Year 12 students feeling the reality
of their final year in High School. Let’s not forget the Year 10 students who have less than a year to
make some challenging but exciting decisions ahead of Year 11 and 12, and a start to their future
pathways.
Year 10 Student Work Experience Placements
The last two weeks of Term 4 last year, Year 10 students had the opportunity to have a taster ahead
of their chosen pathway. ATAR students attended their selected ATAR subject classes whilst the
General students attended a work experience placement related to the Certificate course area. Below
are some photos and information about a few students who attended their work experience
placement. Feedback from the employers was very positive. Students were able to conduct themselves
in a mature adult manner, displaying respect and manage their time effectively whilst learning on the
job. Students enjoyed the exposure to the working environment specifically since it was related to an
area they had interest in. It provided insight to the kind of future career path they hope to follow.
Students also enjoyed working in an adult environment and being able to be involved and observe
general tasks run at a local business. Our College really appreciates and acknowledges the ongoing
support of our local businesses and community. It’s a relationship that closes the gap between School
and the world of work.
Nathan D’Mello attended his work experience placement at Double R Equipment Repairs. Nathan has
enrolled with NRTAFE for a Certificate II in Automotive Servicing.
Madalyn Pobje’s work experience placement was at Pilbara Real Estate Agency where she has now
secured a School Based Traineeship alongside her Certifciate II in Business course through Tubal.
Leroy McCawley’s work experience placement was at Rio Tinto Dampier
Salt. Leroy enjoyed his placement and requested to attend an additional
two weeks, working 10 hour days. Leroy has enrolled at NRTAFE in a
Certificate II in Engineering.
Hailey Moyle has a passion for animals, she was based at the Karratha
Veterinary Hospital. Hailey has enrolled in a Certficate III in Animal
Studies, a self-paced online course through AVT (Applied Vocational
Training – For Carers in Animal Care).
Jake Munro is a very enthusiastic student who thrived at his work experience placement at Cherratta
Lodge. The team at Cherratta Lodge were very impressed by his eagerness and willingness to learn,
they offered Jake a School Based Traineeship. Jake is also enrolled in a Certificate III in Hospitality
through Tubal, an online self-paced study. Jake worked alongside Talita Kruger who is in Year 12, Talita
is also completing her School Based Traineeship with Cherratha Lodge.
Abbey Harris enjoys being around young children, she attended her placement at the Millars Well
Children Services (Day-care centre). Abbey has been successful in securing a School Based Traineeship
through One Tree Community Services. She has commenced her traineeship at the Millars Well Children
Services, also enrolling for a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education.
Samantha Wills attended her work placement at the Pilbara Regiment. Samantha is eager to get
involved in the Defence Force, she is currently a Cadet with the Australian Army Cadets. She enjoys the
challenges around team building and survival skills. Samantha has enrolled at NRTAFE in a Certificate II
in Community Services.
Rio Tinto Student Vacation Program
Rio Tinto and WorkPac recently coordinated the Student Vacation Program, which has just completed
its 13th year. Placements are offered at Dampier, 7 Mile and Cape Lambert.
The program allows students to attend one of two blocks of two-week placements each year and they
can nominate to be placed in a variety of roles, including Workshop/Trade Assistant, Administrator/
Clerical or Service/Support roles.
There was a total of 51 placements across Dampier, 7 Mile and Cape Lambert, with a broad range of
roles being offered to students. Some of the key
messages that came through in the feedback sessions
were that students felt safe while working out on site,
felt comfortable asking questions and were made to
really feel like part of the
team.

Year 10 Careers
There is a lot of focus around better preparing Year 10 students ahead of Year 11 and 12 and beyond.
This year we have two groups of Year 10 Careers classes timetabled fortnightly on a Wednesday. The
aim of the Careers Class is to better prepare students by understanding who they really are as
individuals. It’s also about exposing them to opportunities and options when deciding on subjects /
pathways ahead of Year 11 and 12 as well as possible future careers.
During our classes we will be focusing on topics such as: Personal Identity, investigating various
careers / industries, University pathways, trades (Traineeships/Apprenticeships) pathways, Resume
writing and interview skills to name a few. Throughout the year students will be exposed to various
guest speakers to provide face to face information about pathway and career opportunities.
Over the past few weeks we have been focusing on ourselves and the people around us. Some
students don’t know what their parents do as a career, they just know they go to work! Students have
access to the MyFuture Careers website. It’s an interactive website where students can complete
various quizzes to narrow down their search in career options, bullseye charts which link to video clips
that provide more information about industries but also about ‘how to get there’.
Students have been encouraged to explore the Bullseye charts by selecting a learning area they enjoy.

The GREaT Hospital Program
During the Year 10 Careers classes I presented an opportunity available to students who may be
interested in Health, Medicine, Nursing, Midwifery, Therapy and Dentistry. WA Health offer the GREaT
Hospital Program to Year 10 students. The program offers a three-day work experience at the
Karratha Health Campus, each day in a different department to gain a holistic experience of the
general running of a hospital environment.
Students that are interested in the program can apply online. Applications are now OPEN.
Applications CLOSE on Friday 8 March (5pm). Please click here to go to website for detailed
information on the program.
In addition to the application, students will be required to submit a reference letter from the school
(House Coordinator), provide an up to date record of all childhood and adolescent immunisations as
well as having a 2019 flu shot to protect themselves during the placement. These documents can be
handed to me, I’ll scan and send them onto WA Health.
Successful students will be notified by 5 April, via email and those that have not been successful will
be notified by 12 April. Students are required to use their school email address. Placements occur at
different dates during terms 2 – 4, there are no placements during school holidays.
Year 12 Students interested in Medicine - UWA Broadway Direct Pathway
UWA Broadway Direct Pathway offers students who intend to study Medicine a direct entry into UWA
to their postgraduate courses of Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Dentistry (DMD), Doctor of
Podiatric Medicine (DPM) and the Master of Pharmacy (MPharm).
Students intending on a direct entry to UWA will be required to sit the UCAT (University Clinical
Aptitude Test), used to be known as the UMAT test.
The Pathway objectives are to:
Increase awareness and provide students in Year 11 and 12 with information re the medicine,
dentistry, podiatric medicine and pharmacy courses at UWA.
Provide a point of contact for teachers and students during Years 11 and 12.
Mentor and support students throughout the complex entry process in Year 12.
The steps to applying for the Broadway School Leaver Direct Pathway in Year 12 are:
MD and DMD applicants must register as early as possible to sit UCAT ANZ and achieve an ATAR of
96.
For those interested in Podiatry or Pharmacy (UCAT ANZ not required) an ATAR of 94 is required.
Successful students will be invited to attend a structured interview (MD and DMD only).
Students must meet the Broadway eligibility requirement.
Broadway Definition: The Broadway Direct Pathway is available to domestic students who have
undertaken their entire Year 12 studies, including WACE, at a selected UWA Broadway School.

A representative from UWA will be visiting our College on 26 March to present to students.
Combined Universities Presentation / Visit
The University of Notre Dame Australia is hosting a Combined Universities visit to Karratha and Port
Hedland. Representatives will be providing information about their University such as; campus venue,
broad course overview and entry requirements, student support, student facilities, accommodation, etc.
Brochures and catalogues will be available.

Murdoch University
Year 10, 11 and 12 students and parents are invited to attend an information evening held at St Luke’s
College on Tuesday 26 March from 6:30 – 7:30 pm. Please make use of this opportunity to find out more
about the Universities based in WA. There will be time allocated for those who wish to speak individually
with any of the representatives. Students will be attending a presentation the following day, Wednesday
27 March.
WA Training Awards 2019
Students studying a Certificate II or above qualification as a School-Based Trainee have the opportunity
to enter the WA School-based Apprentice of the year category. Winners receive a $3000 study grant from
Roy Hill and the opportunity to represent WA at the Australian Training Awards in Brisbane in November.
Students studying a Certificate II or above qualification through the VET pathway also have the

Australian Defence Force
The recruitment team at the Australian Defence Force presented to all Year 10 – 12 students earlier this
term. Their presentation provided information about various pathways on offer to students with an
interest in the Army, Navy and Air force. The ADF offer University Studies, Traineeships/Apprenticeships
and Gap Year.
It's never too early to start thinking about becoming an Officer in the Navy, Army or Air Force. A degree
will fast-track you into an exciting Officer role. The ADF Academy offer military and leadership training in
parallel with your university studies, choosing from a wide range of UNSW degree courses at ADFA in
Canberra.

Army or Air Force could be like, but also to have a year full of adventure, new friends, new skills,

Aboriginal Cadetship / Traineeship on offer through the WA Police Force
Aboriginal or Torre Strait Islander students aged 17 or over who have an interest in the WA Police Force
and want to make a difference in your community?
The WA Police Force are offering trainee positions. Trainees will develop workplace skills, exposure to a
range of unique policing activities and get a true taste of what it means to be a part of the WA Police
Force family. Successful applications will receive job related training and attend formal class training
provided by North Metropolitan TAFE. Applicants will be supported throughout their learning journey and
will have access to mentors to assist in reaching a career goal.
Successful applicants will receive a 12-month contract with a possible extension to 24 months, a
competitive salary, uniform, shift allowances and generous leave entitlements.
Limited positions are available in the metropolitan and regional locations which will commence in July

The 2019 School Fees and Levies Statements, Fees Schedule, Fees Policy and Payment Plan
Authority Form will be mailed to families by the end of February 2019. All new and current families
are required to complete the Payment Plan Authority Form and return it to the College by Monday,
11 March, 2019.
In cases of financial hardship, a family may discuss their financial situation with the College Principal
and apply for a fee remission. If you are experiencing difficulties in paying your fees, please be
assured, there is always a solution. Please contact the College to make a private and confidential
appointment with the Principal to discuss what arrangements might be put in place to assist you in
moving forward with your account, whilst still ensuring that your child remains part of our St Luke’s
community.
Please note that AMEX and Diners cards are not accepted by the College.

Uniform Shop
Please note the uniform shop is only open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30am – 3:15pm.
There has been an increased number of people asking the administration office staff for uniforms
outside the shop times, this will not continue unless there is an emergency. If you are unable to visit
the shop during opening hours, please make use of the online ordering system. Students are able to
collect their orders during lunch breaks, if not collected on those days orders are left at the office for
students to collect at any time.
There is an increased need for second hand items. If you have any school items that are no longer
required please consider donating them to the College so that they can be offered to families who are
requiring some additional assistance.
We are looking for some parent helpers throughout the year. If you are able to assist during opening
hours at any point during the school term/s please contact either myself or the College administration
to discuss further.
