Editing Images with ImageBlenderImageBlender 3


Introduction

Open ImageBlender.

Click the Start button.

Choose All Programs, choose the Tech4Learning folder, choose ImageBlender 3, andselect ImageBlender 3.

ImageBlender will open.

Open an Image

When ImageBlender opens, the workspace is empty.

Click the Open button on the toolbar.

You will see the Open File dialog.

Click the My Computer button.



Double-click Local Disk (C:).

Double-click the Program Files folder.

Double-click the Tech4Learning folder.

Double-click the ImageBlender 3 folder.

Double-click the Sample Pictures folder.

Click Joshua Tree.ibx.

Click the Open button.



The image will open in ImageBlender.

Resize an Image

Images are often larger or smaller than the size you need. You can find the current sizeof the image and resize the image.

Click the Size button on the toolbar.

You will see the Image Size dialog.



The current image size is 800x600 pixels.

Select the text in the Width field and type: 640

Press the Tab key on the keyboard.

You will see the Height field change to 480.



Click the OK button.

The image will be resized.

Change the Zoom

You can change the zoom of the image to make the image fill more of the workspace.

Click and drag the Zoom slider at the bottom of the screen to the right.



Drag the Zoom slider until the image fills the workspace.

Apply Effects to an Image

You can apply effects to images.

Click the Effects tab above the editing panel.



You will see the effects library in the editing panel.

Each folder contains effects that you can apply to an image.

Double-click the Artistic folder.

You will see a list of effects.



Scroll down the list until you see Oil Paint.

Click Oil Paint to select it.

Click the Apply button.

The effect will be applied to the image.



You can apply more than one effect to an image.

Click the Home button to go back to the effect folder list.

Double-click the Distort folder.

You will see a list of effects.



Click the Cool Edge effect.

Many effects have options. If an effect has options, the Edit button will be active.

Click the Edit button.



You will see the Cool Edge dialog.



The dialog shows a preview of the effect on the left and effect options on the right.

Use the scroll bar to see all of the edges.

Click an edge to see a preview of the effect.

When you find an edge you like, click the OK button.

The edge will be applied to the image.

Save an Image

Click the Save button on the toolbar.



You will see the Save Image As dialog.

Use the Save In pull-down menu to choose a location to save the file.

Click the Save button.

The image will be saved.

Open Another Image



You can have more than one image open at a time.

Click the Open button on the toolbar.

You will see the Open File dialog.

The dialog will open to the Sample Pictures folder.

Click Lighthouse.ibx.

Click the Open button.

The image will open in ImageBlender.



There are tabs at the bottom of the window for each open image.

Crop an Image

You can crop an image.

Click the Selection tool on the tool palette.



Click the Options tab above the editing panel.

You will see selection tool options.

Click the Rectangle selection tool.

Click and drag a rectangle that includes the upper three-quarters of the image. Start inthe upper left corner of the image and drag to the right side of the image three-quartersof the way to the bottom.



Go to the Image menu and choose Crop Image.

The image will be cropped to the selection.



Add a Layer

You can add layers to the image. Layers let you add to an image without altering otherparts of the image.

Click the New Layer button on the Layers panel.



You will see a new layer in the Layers panel.

The new layer will be selected.

Select a Color

You can select a color from the image to paint with.

Click the Eyedropper tool on the tool palette below the color wells.

Move the cursor over the image. The cursor will change to an eyedropper.

Click the dark blue near the top of the image.



The first color well will change to this color.

This is the color you will paint with.

Paint a Shape

You can paint shapes on the image.

Click the Shape tool on the tool palette.

Each paint tool has options.

You will see options for the Shape tool in the Options editing panel.



Click the Rectangle shape.

Click the On radio button for the Filled option.

Move the cursor over the image. The cursor will become a crosshair.

Click and drag a rectangle near the bottom of the image.



If you make a mistake, click the Undo button on the toolbar and try again.

Add Text

You can add text to an image.



Click the Text tool on the tool palette.

You will see a text box on the image.



You will also see a new text layer in the Layers panel.

Double-click the center of the text box.

You will see a blinking insertion cursor.

Type: Lighthouse

Click outside of the text box.

Move and Resize a Text Box

You can move and resize a text box.



There are eight handles around the text box. You can use these handles to resize thetext box.

Click and drag the middle handle at the bottom of the box toward the top of the picture.This will make the box smaller.

Click the center of the text box and drag it over the blue rectangle.

You cannot see the text because it is the same color as the blue box.

Click the white color well on the tool palette.



The text will change to white.

Format Text

You can change the format of the text.

There are text formatting options in the Options editing panel.



Use the Font pull-down menu to select a new font.

Drag the Size slider to the right to make the font size larger.



You will see the changes on the image.





Use the Save in pull-down menu to choose a location to save the file.


The image will be saved.

Open an Image from Pics4Learning



Pics4Learning is an online collection of copyright-friendly images for education. Youcan open images in ImageBlender directly from Pics4Learning.

Go to the File menu and choose Open Pics4Learning Image.

You will see the Pics4Learning browser.



Click the Search field at the top.



Type: sunset123

Click the Search button.

You will see a matching image.



Double-click the image.



You will see it open in ImageBlender behind the Pics4Learning browser.

Click the Close Browser button.

You will see the image in the ImageBlender workspace.

Add an Image as a Layer

You can add another Pics4Learning image as a new layer in this image.

Click the Add Image button on the tool palette.

Choose From Pics4Learning.



You will see the Pics4Learning browser again.



Click the Search field. Delete the contents.



Type: manhattanskyline3

Click the Search button.

You will see a picture of the Manhattan skyline.



Double-click the picture.



Click the Close Browser button on the Pics4Learning browser.

You will see the Manhattan skyline image on top of the sunset image.

You will see the Manhattan skyline image as a layer in the Layers panel.

Move a Layer



You can change the position of a layer.

Make sure the Arrow tool on the palette is selected.

Move the cursor over the middle of the layer.

Click and drag the layer so that the bottom of the layer is at the waterline on the sunsetimage.




You will see selection options in the Options panel on the right.

Click the Rectangle selection option.

Move the cursor to the top left of the sunset picture.

Click and drag across the sunset and skyline pictures to select a box that ends at thebottom of the Manhattan skyline water.



Go to the Image menu and choose Crop Image.

The image will be cropped to the size of the selection.



Use the Magic Wand Selector

You can use the Magic Wand to select part of an image based on color.


Click the Magic Wand selection option in the Options panel.



Click and drag the Tolerance slider so that the middle of the slider bar is lined up withthe left side of the Oval selection option.

The tolerance setting determines how many nearby colors to select. When you clickone part of the blue sky, other blue colors close to that blue on the color wheel will beselected.

Make sure the manhattanskyline3 layer is selected on the Layers panel.

Move the cursor over the blue sky above the skyline.



Click the mouse button.

Most of the sky will be selected.

If part of any building is included in the selection, click the Undo button on the toolbar.

Click and drag the Tolerance slider a little to the left.

Click the blue sky again.



When only sky is selected, press the Delete key on the keyboard.

The selection will disappear. The sunset from the other layer will be visible through thearea you deleted.

Click the Magic Wand cursor in the sky that remains in the lower right.

Press the Delete key on the keyboard.

Click Magic Wand cursor in the sky that remains in the lower left.



Press the Delete key on the keyboard.

There are still a few pieces of sky left.

You could have increased the Tolerance to select more sky at once, but the blue colorreflected in some of the glass on the buildings would also have been selected.

Use the Eraser Tool

You can use the Eraser tool to delete part of a layer.



Click the Eraser tool on the tool palette.

You will see the Eraser options in the Options panel.

Use the scroll bar to find the eraser shaped like a vertical line.

Click and drag the Size slider so that it is near the left side of the slider bar.

Move the cursor over part of the leftover sky.



Click and drag to erase it.

Erase all of the leftover blue sky from the manhattanskyline3 layer.





Type a name for the file.


Add Text

You can add a text layer to your image.

Click the Text tool on the tool palette.



You will see a text box in the middle of the image.

Type: New York City

You will see this text.

Click the picture outside the text box.

Move the cursor over the middle of the text layer.

Click and drag the text layer to the upper left corner of the image.



Click and drag to resize the text layer so that it stretches across the entire image.



Use the text options on the Options panel to change the format of the text.



Adjust the text size so that it stretches across the top of the image.



Change Text Color

You can change the color of text in an image.

Click the Eyedropper tool below the color wells.

Move the cursor over a medium blue in the skyline.



Click the mouse button.

The text will fill with this color.

Bevel Text

You can bevel text. Once you apply an effect to text, it becomes an image and is nolonger editable as text.



Click the Effects tab on the editing panel.

You will see the Distort effects.

Use the scroll bar to find the Bevel effect.

Click the Bevel effect.

Click the Edit button.



You will see the Bevel dialog.

Click and drag the Size slider to the left.

Click and drag the Depth slider to the match the position of the Size slider.


The text will have a bevel.



Add a Shadow to a Layer

You can add shadows to layers in your image.

Make sure the New York City title is selected in the Layers panel.

Click the Shadow check box at the bottom of the Layers panel.



You will see a shadow behind the text.

Click the Edit button next to the Shadow check box on the Layers panel.

You will see the Shadow Options dialog.



Click and drag the Angle arrow up and to the left of center.




You will see the new direction for the shadow.



Click the manhattanskyline3 layer in the Layers panel.

Click the Shadow check box at the bottom of the Layers panel.

You will see a shadow behind the skyline.



Click the Edit button next to the Shadow check box on the Layers panel.

Click and drag the Angle arrow up and to the left of center.



Click the Save button on the toolbar to save your changes.

Export an Image

When you save an image, it saves in a format that is readable only by ImageBlender.You can export the image as a file that you can use with many other programs.

Click the Export button on the toolbar.



You will see the Export Image dialog.

You will see your original image on the left and a preview on the right of what yourimage will look like using the current settings.

Use the Format pull-down to choose a new file format.



When you choose a new format, you will see information about that file format and anyadditional settings.

Click the Export button.

You will see the Save File As dialog.



Type a name for the file.

You will see this name in the File name field.

Click the Save button to export the image.

Present a Slide Show

You can present a slide show of the pictures that are currently open in ImageBlender.

Click the Show button on the toolbar and click Settings.



You will see the Slide Show Options dialog.

Click the Using Open Documents radio button if it is not selected.



Click the Show button to start the slide show.

You will see a slide show of the open images.

When the last image has been shown, the slide show will close and you will see theImageBlender window.

You can end a show early by pressing the Escape key on the keyboard.

The next time you want to present a slide show of the currently open images, click theShow button on the toolbar and select Start.

Conclusion

Go to the File menu and choose Exit.
