Characters vs. Nonprinting Characters

• Characters• All items visible on screen that can be printed• Examples: Letters, numbers, graphics

• Nonprinting Characters• All items that can be seen on a screen, but not

printed• Examples: Hard returns, blank spaces, & tabs• Show Hide button

Nonprinting CharactersTab = Arrow Space = Dot

Hard Return = Paragraph Symbol

Delete & Replace Characters

• Backspace Key• Deletes characters to the LEFT of the

insertion point

• Delete Key• Deletes characters to the RIGHT of the

insertion point

Use Undo, Redo, and Repeat• Undo (CTRL +Z)• Reverses the last command• Undo Button (QAT)

• Redo/Repeat (CTRL + Y)• Reverses the action of the undo button• Repeats last action• Redo Button (QAT)

Select Text

• Selecting• Identifies blocks of text for editing

• BEWARE!!• New keystrokes will replace selected text

Selecting Text using Mouse & Keyboard

• Mouse• Click & Drag—Selects 1 character at a time• Double-click a word—Selects entire word• Triple-click—Selects entire paragraph• Triple-click in Left Margin—Selects entire

document

• Keyboard• Shift + arrow keys—Selects 1 character at a time• CTRL + A—Selects All Text

Drag-and-Drop

• Drag-and-Drop• Quick & easy way to move text short distances

• Use mouse—DRAG selected text from existing location—then DROP the selected text in new location

• Define & use the clipboard

• Use Cut, Copy, & Paste commands

• Highlight text to emphasize importance

• Insert a File into a document

Cut, Copy, and Paste

• Clipboard• Temporary storage place in computer’s memory• Stores up to 24 items• How To: Clipboard Group--Dialog Box Launcher

• Cut (Ctrl + X)• Removes text from the document and stores it in the clipboard

• Copy (Ctrl + C)• Copies the selected items to the clipboard

• Paste (Ctrl + V)• Places the content of the clipboard at the insertion point

Highlight Text

• Highlight• Used to emphasize important text within a

document

• Use light colors ONLY!• Live Previews
