AN EDISON ENERGY INSIGHT

With the very recent release of the latest report by the UnitedNation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, many sectorsand businesses have been awakened to the challenges that theworld faces to address and find solutions to the ‘Energy Trilemma’.

Many myths surround climate change action, not least the one that saysthat addressing it will cost heavily. Edison Energy firmly believe that noaction, carries a much greater cost, one that would be difficult for theworld, businesses and our economy to survive.

What is very much worth highlighting here, with evidence from theIntergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, is that with theaction required, there lies a very exciting opportunity for investors to notonly back climate change action, but to also realise the revenue rewardsthat it brings.

The BBC reported today (Tuesday 4th November), that the renewableenergy sector has called for a special "green bond" to be set up whichwould allow savers to invest in the technologies that are required to bringsolutions to the ‘Energy Trilemma’.

The proposal has been floated in a Scottish Renewables "blueprint" fornext year's general election.

Its manifesto argues that a green bond could offer savers across thecountry "a decent return" on their money. It also claims the bond wouldprovide the renewable sector with cash which is needed to invest ininfrastructure. We are already seeing many individual investors and investmentorganisations actively removing and diversifying their investment fundsfrom any energy investments that are seen as damaging, including fossilfuel investments. Glasgow University has become the first in the UK toannounce that it will sell off all the shares it holds in companies thatproduce fossil fuels, with many more Universities sure to follow, as well aslooking at their overall energy strategy, including; energy supply securityand energy costs.

This news followed the fact that the Rockefeller family is actively selling itsoil investments, a divestment of some $56billion, to reinvest inrenewables and is seen as one of the clearest signs to date of the sea-change in thinking and the opportunities that exist for change and forinvestors.

Many businesses and organisations are now not only looking to addressthe rising energy costs that their business faces, sometimes throughoutmultiple sites, but they are also developing investment within renewablesto offer them added revenue for future sustainability.

Let’s face it, many businesses are at risk that energy and the associatedcosts, are running the risk of putting the lights out for them. This is thestark reality, but on the other hand, for businesses that are looking atfuture opportunities and future risks, take account of the IPCC report andmake it work for your business and your investments. History has shownus that businesses that develop a long-term strategy, are clearly the oneswho succeed.

If we are to take anything from the report, the Rockefeller family andGlasgow Universities attitude, it’s that confidence in renewable energyinvestment is here.
