The New York-born singer posted on her blog Wednes-day that she is pledging the money on behalf of her par-ents and sister. “The main agenda of the 1st BDF, which was held in 2008, was the consolidation of democratic

values in the region. Then, the 2nd and 3rd BDFs focused on promot-ing democratic values in a safe and stable environment,” he said.

Marty noted that the main objec-tive of the 4th BDF was to promote democratic values at the national as well as regional levels.

At the 5th BDF, themed “Ad-vancing Democratic Principles at The Global Setting”, Marty said all parties must first evaluate the achievements made since the pre-vious BDF, before continuing to promote democratic values across the globe.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Banyan Tree Ungasan, Bali hosted a Korean cooking workshop for the mem-bers of the young Chefs Club Indonesia Bali Chapter (yCCI Bali). The workshop took place at BAMBU restaurant and conducted by Chef Myung Chul Ham, the Korean guest chef from Banyan Tree Club & Spa Seoul who is visiting the luxury hotel resort for the “Taste of Korea” promotion taking place October 2012.

These phenomena indicate that crimes spreading to students are progressively alarming so that they must get a more serious attention from school and Bali Education Agency and Education Agency of the regencies/munici-pality throughout Bali, including their parents.

Contacted on Wednesday (Nov 7), two education observers, namely Putu Rumawan Salain, and Putu Sarjana claimed to be sad when reading the news in the media that revealed the crime committed by teenagers having the status as students. Both as-sessed that juvenile delinquency acts in Bali had now been getting more alarming. They were no lon-ger limited to commit a mischief act such as quarrel among the students, but had been entering into the world of crime.

“These phenomena should be examined seriously by all par-ties. Just imagine, the junior high school children are arguably still inexperienced teenager, but have dared to commit such determined act,” said Rumawan Salain.

Though not willing to convict the delinquency leading to crime as evidence of school failure to build the character of students, Rumawan Salain hoped the school could reap valuable lessons from case to further intensify the su-pervision. One of the solutions offered was that the school was asked to increase the supervision against the students by fostering home visit.

Such home visit did not only target the problematic students but also applied to all students. “In this context, every teacher is

“By all means, the responsibil-ity of supervision against the stu-dent after school lies in the hands of parents, families and commu-nities. Moreover, the involvement of students in the crimes mostly takes place at night, where it has become the responsibility of parents and families. Neverthe-less, I also expect the school to provide guidance specifically for the students getting involved in crimes. As such, student will be aware of their duties as a student and realize what they have done is a big mistake,” he said.

When contacted separately, Deputy Principal of SMAN 3 Denpasar senior high school, in charge of Student Affairs, I Ketut Arya Putra, said his party attempted to prevent the students from engaging in crime through the implementation of extra tight school discipline. Until now, he said, no students were involved in crime acts. Besides, his party also routinely held a raid at least once a month, controlling the discipline of students in terms of their attires and belongings in anticipation of the possibil-ity of students bringing along prohibited items to school such as drugs, alcohol, pornographic VCDs, sharp weapons and other prohibited items. Specifically to prevent the dissemination of pornographic products through cellular phone, the school also imposed a ban on bringing cellu-lar phone to school for students.

of the National Armed Forces (TNI) Agus Suhartono and National Police Chief Timur Pradopo made a visit to monitor the security pre-paredness of the Bali Democracy Forum (BDF) V. As scheduled, the event will be opened by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Thursday (Nov 8).

The Commander accompanied by the National Police Chief and the TNI lineups inspected all the rooms in the BICC building at the Westin Hotel, Nusa Dua, such as the main building used for the opening of BDF in Nusa Indah Hall. Similarly, they also checked some rooms used for the venue of bilateral meeting such as the press conference to toilet were inseparable from the observa-tion of the military and police leader of the country.

In four quick years, First Lady Michelle Obama has become one of the most influential women in fashion, catapulting small name designers like Rachel Roy, Jason Wu, Thakoon, and Prabal Gurung to fame, and putting mall brands like J.Crew and the Gap back on the map. NEW YORK — The nor’easter, as promised, brought gusting winds, rain, snow and the threat of flood-ing. It menaced travelers with icy roads, snarled the Long Island Rail Road and knocked out power to people who had only recently gotten it back after Superstorm Sandy.

But for the weary, relief is on the way. Joey Picca, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, says the unwelcome snow and high winds are slowly moving out of the New York City area. Commuters, though, may have to brave some lin-gering snowfall Thursday morning.

LONDON - Germany’s Angela Merkel on Wednesday warned Brit-ain not to turn its back on Europe and urged its Prime Minister David Cameron to work with her to avoid deadlock at European Union budget talks later this month.

The leaders met in London to try to iron out differences over the EU’s 1 trillion euro (800.5 billion pounds) budget that threaten to block a deal and fuel fears that London is drifting away from the 27-nation union.

Describing plans to increase the EU budget as “ludicrous”, Cameron has threatened to veto any deal he thinks is not in Britain’s interests and will push for a real-terms freeze.

However, German officials are exasperated by what they see as Lon-don’s slide towards Europe’s margins, a feeling reinforced last week after the British parliament voted to call for a real-terms cut in the EU’s budget.

Before meeting Cameron, the German Chancellor told the Europe-an Parliament she could not imagine a Europe without Britain, the world’s sixth largest economy, which relies on the EU for half its trade.

“I believe you can be very happy on an island, but being alone in this world

doesn’t make you any happier,” Merkel said after British politician Nigel Farage, leader of the anti-European UK Indepen-dence Party, urged her to tell Cameron that Britain should quit the EU.

‘LUDICROUS’ INCREASECameron, who wants to stay in

the bloc under renegotiated terms, argues that the EU must tighten its belt at a time when the euro zone debt crisis looms large, and many countries are faced with austerity and shrinking household budgets.

“They are proposing a com-pletely ludicrous 100 billion euro increase,” Cameron said. “I never had very high hopes for a November agreement because you have got 27 different people round the table with 27 different opinions.”

Cameron was humiliated by last week’s defeat in parliament and op-ponents say he has lost control of Conservative Party anti-Europeans, a group that helped topple former leaders and that wants a referendum on Britain’s EU membership.

Debate over a referendum on Britain reworking its EU role or even leaving has climbed the agenda. A YouGov survey in Octo-ber found 49 percent of those polled wanted to leave the EU, against 28 percent who wanted to stay in it.

Heavy rain on Wednesday night resulted in a number of flooding disasters and some buildings ava-lanched. Severe damage occurred in the rear of the office of Karangasem regent. Revetment at two locations respectively belonging to Totok and Ketut Sugi collapsed along some 7 meters.

There were no casualties or injuries. Aside from the damage due to the collapsed house revet-ment, another flooding occurred in the office area of the Karangasem regent. Gravel, earth and even tens of banana trees were swept away and scattered in the parking lot next to Wantilan Hall of the regent’s office.

On Wednesday morning, the staff and janitors worked together to clean up the road and the office area of the regent. One of the staff whose house was in the back of the Karangasem regent’s office, I Wayan Putra, with a number of people had cleaned up the road body behind the regent’s office since early morning. Such flood-ing swept away the banana trees, garbage and the road body, while some other parts were covered by mud and the road body was crushed by flooding.

They claimed to suffer a loss worth IDR 2 million because their goods were inundated with water.

Water supply from the Municipal Waterworks (PDAM Tir-ta Mangutama) of Badung Regency to Pecatu handled by PT Tirtaartha Buanamulia (TB) is often ham-pered. Moreover, currently there is an allegation if a water trader manipulates the pipe connection of the Municipality Waterworks.

Komang Sujana, a resident of Pecatu, was disappointed with the service provided by the Municipal-ity Waterworks. Though having paid, the water problem still fre-quently happened. Classic problem continued to haunt the residents. As solution to the trickling water supply of the Municipality Water-works, many residents were forced to buy water supplied by a tank truck. A tank of water cost IDR 150,000.

Water supply service provided by tank truck was considered help-ful. But behind it, the residents suspected there were individuals such as the water service providers that intentionally clogged the water

pipe connection to the house of residents. When the water supply to people’s house did not work, they would buy the water provided. Such practices were clearly detrimental to residents and government. There-fore, he hoped the relevant agencies could immediately intervene to overcome it.

Chairman of Commission B of the Badung House, I Made Sumerta, reminded the government to give at-tention to the clean water crisis issue afflicting the Pecatu area for long time. Aside from having an impact on the community, the water supply disruption had also occurred in the area of Uluwatu Temple which was a tourist destination. “It should be addressed immediately. Government and the Municipality Waterworks in particular must immediately find a solution,” he said.

region. It was directed to the supply of clean water infrastructure worth IDR 6.7 billion and the operations and maintenance of water supply facilities worth IDR 119 million.

The activities were aimed at the provision of clean water at Dangin Peken hamlet, Penarungan village as much as IDR 559 million, wa-ter supply infrastructure on Jalan Pantai Balangan, South Kuta, worth IDR 2 billion, clean water at Taman village, Abiansemal (IDR 850 million), Sawangan hamlet, Benoa Village, South Kuta (IDR 458 million) and Canggu hamlet, North Kuta subdistrict (IDR 2.5 billion). However, Pecatu village having experienced the water crisis for a long time was not included in the program.

Related to the issue of water supply to Pecatu area, General Manager of PT TB, Daniel J Fony, in the anniversary celebration of the Municipal Waterworks (PDAM Tirta Mangutama) recently said the problem was only partial or did not occur at Pecatu on the whole. NEW DELHI - Fear of a 2008-style financial disaster is holding back the global recovery but business must be more confident and seek out new investment openings, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Wednesday.

“We can’t get over the overhang” of the financial crisis that followed the collapse of US investment pow-erhouse house Lehman Brothers, the Canadian leader said in a speech opening the Indian World Economic Forum in New Delhi.

Businesses worldwide are refrain-ing from investing because they fear a “catastrophic event” that will “send everything into a tailspin”, said Harper, adding that this “continues to restrain the global recovery”.

He called such fears overblown and urged financial decision-makers to display more confidence in making investments and help repair the global economy.

“Don’t worry about today’s uncer-tainty -- look at the opportunities,” he urged, saying this was the strategy pursued by Canada which has fared better than many developed econo-

mies since the onset of the financial crisis.

There are signs of rising global trade protectionism like that which hampered recovery from the Great Depression in the 1930s and which could still push the world into a pro-longed recession, Harper conceded.

“But it (protectionism) is not an avalanche -- it is not yet something to panic about,” Harper told business leaders who are discussing ways to boost India’s faltering economic growth at the two-day forum.

“Most leaders get it on the big picture” that trade barriers will harm rather than help their economies, said Harper who later Wednesday moved on to the northern Indian state of Punjab from where thousands of Canadians originate.

Still, he said it is clear that a com-prehensive deal in the Doha round of world trade liberalisation talks is out of reach for now and Canada instead is negotiating multilateral and bilateral deals with countries such as India.

Harper’s speech came a day after the two countries clinched an agree-ment opening the door to Canadian exports of nuclear supplies to the energy-hungry South Asian nation.

Investors fear a deeply divided Congress will not be able to reach an agreement to avoid a so-called fiscal cliff at the end of the year that many say will send the United States back into recession.

Eyes are also on Beijing, where the Communist Party has kicked off its 18th congress, which will see the begin-ning of a once-in-a-decade leadership change.

Tokyo tumbled 1.51 percent, or 135.74 points, to 8,837.15, Sydney fell 0.72 percent, or 32.7 points, to close at 4,483.8 and Seoul lost 1.33 percent, shedding 25.83 points to 1,911.09.In the afternoon Hong Kong skidded 1.47 per-cent and Shanghai fell 1.02 percent.

The initial upbeat reaction Wednes-day to Obama’s victory over Republican Mitt Romney was replaced Thursday with trepidation as the focus turned to the fiscal cliff, a combination of deep spending cuts and huge tax hikes to take

NUSA DUA - Indonesian Military (TNI) Chief Adm. Agus Suhartono has confirmed that nine heads of state will attend the 5th Bali Democracy Forum (BDF), an annual politi-cal forum, held on Thursday in Nusa Dua, Bali.

“Eight heads of state and President Yudhoyono have confirmed their participation in BDF,” Suhartono said on Wednesday, while overseeing security arrangements ahead of the event.

“Previously, 12 heads of state were scheduled to attend

the BDF, but three of them have cancelled their schedule for the event that will be held in Dewata Island,” he noted.

“There might be problems in their country, due to which they will be unable to come to Bali,” he added.

Suhartono did not mention the names of the three heads of state. However, he stated that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Afghan Pres-ident Hamid Karzai will attend the event.

According to Suhartono, the security of all heads of state, who are included in the “Very Very Important Person” (VVIP)

category, is the responsibil-ity of all Indonesian security agencies. He pointed out that the heads of state will also be accompanied by their own security forces.

“The restriction with regard to weapons that can be brought into Indonesia by the other countries’ security forces has been communicated to all,” Suhartono said.

“Details such as how many weapons are allowed to be brought in, among other things, have been clearly communi-cated. If there are excess weap-ons, they will be withheld,” he added.

“The export value of fish and shrimp in September 2012 reached USD 10,219,000. It increased by 40.83 percent compared to August 2012 reaching USD 7,256,000. Meanwhile, the export value in September 2011 reached USD 7,300,000 or showed an increase of 39.98 percent compared to the same month in 2012,” he said.

Admittedly, the fish and shrimp commodity had become the Bali’s potential commodities that could bring in dominant foreign exchange compared to the eleven other export commodi-ties of Bali in the same period. So far, the market share in the export destination of Bali’s fish and shrimp targeted eleven countries with different absorption percentage. The market of the United States amounted to 17.99 percent, Thailand (5.08 percent), Australia (4.69 percent) and Hong Kong (3.75 percent).

Suarsa further admitted that other than becoming the export destination, Japan was also one of the countries becoming the origin country of the imported goods required by Bali so far. JAKARTA - The Ministry of Health has stated that nine government hos-pitals in Indonesia are likely to have international accreditation by 2014.

“We are preparing nine government hospitals for international accreditation by 2014,” said Supriyantoro, the Ministry of Health¿s Director General for Health Development Effort, at the 12th congress of All Indonesian Hospitals Association (PERSI) here on Wednesday.

He added that two state-owned hos-pitals Ciptomangunkusumo (RSCM) hospital in Jakarta and Sanglah hospital in Denpasar, Bali are likely to receive international accreditation by the end

of this year.Supriyantoro expressed hope that

other state-owned hospitals, such as Hasan Sadikin, Gatot Subroto, Karyadi, and Sardjito, would receive interna-tional accreditation in early 2013.

He said only five out of some 1,800 hospitals in Indonesia are internation-ally accredited, adding that all the five are privately owned.

The five internationally accredited hospitals in Indonesia are Siloam Kara-waci Hospital and Eka Hospital Bumi Serpong Damai in Tangerang; Santosa Hospital in Bandung; and Bintaro Pre-mier Hospital and Jatinegara Premier Hospital in Jakarta, Supriyantoro added.

The five-times grand slam cham-pion was as cool as a cucumber on Wednesday as he withstood the best that fierce rival Andy Murray could throw at him to earn his second suc-cessive victory at this year’s ATP World Tour Finals.

World number one Djokovic eventually prevailed 4-6 6-3 7-5 in another energy-sapping duel with the Briton he has been locking horns with since they were 11-year-olds.

Murray got the better of Djok-ovic in an epic U.S. Open final in September to win his first grand slam but Djokovic has won four of their seven meetings this year, including the last two.

In the Shanghai Masters final last month Djokovic saved five match points before downing Mur-ray and while he was never in quite as much trouble on Wednesday, he still needed those survival instincts to finally subdue the Scot after be-ing outplayed for the first hour.

NEW DELHI - Fear of a 2008-style financial disaster is holding back the global recovery but business must be more confident and seek out new investment openings, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Wednesday.

“We can’t get over the overhang” of the financial crisis that followed the collapse of US investment pow-erhouse house Lehman Brothers, the Canadian leader said in a speech opening the Indian World Economic Forum in New Delhi.

Businesses worldwide are refrain-ing from investing because they fear a “catastrophic event” that will “send everything into a tailspin”, said Harper, adding that this “continues to restrain the global recovery”.

He called such fears overblown and urged financial decision-makers to display more confidence in making investments and help repair the global economy.

“Don’t worry about today’s uncer-tainty -- look at the opportunities,” he urged, saying this was the strategy pursued by Canada which has fared better than many developed econo-

mies since the onset of the financial crisis.

There are signs of rising global trade protectionism like that which hampered recovery from the Great Depression in the 1930s and which could still push the world into a pro-longed recession, Harper conceded.

“But it (protectionism) is not an avalanche -- it is not yet something to panic about,” Harper told business leaders who are discussing ways to boost India’s faltering economic growth at the two-day forum.

“Most leaders get it on the big picture” that trade barriers will harm rather than help their economies, said Harper who later Wednesday moved on to the northern Indian state of Punjab from where thousands of Canadians originate.

Still, he said it is clear that a com-prehensive deal in the Doha round of world trade liberalisation talks is out of reach for now and Canada instead is negotiating multilateral and bilateral deals with countries such as India.

Harper’s speech came a day after the two countries clinched an agree-ment opening the door to Canadian exports of nuclear supplies to the energy-hungry South Asian nation.

Investors fear a deeply divided Congress will not be able to reach an agreement to avoid a so-called fiscal cliff at the end of the year that many say will send the United States back into recession.

Eyes are also on Beijing, where the Communist Party has kicked off its 18th congress, which will see the begin-ning of a once-in-a-decade leadership change.

NUSA DUA - Indonesian Military (TNI) Chief Adm. Agus Suhartono has confirmed that nine heads of state will attend the 5th Bali Democracy Forum (BDF), an annual politi-cal forum, held on Thursday in Nusa Dua, Bali.

“Eight heads of state and President Yudhoyono have confirmed their participation in BDF,” Suhartono said on Wednesday, while overseeing security arrangements ahead of the event.

“Previously, 12 heads of state were scheduled to attend

the BDF, but three of them have cancelled their schedule for the event that will be held in Dewata Island,” he noted.

“There might be problems in their country, due to which they will be unable to come to Bali,” he added.

Suhartono did not mention the names of the three heads of state. However, he stated that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Afghan Pres-ident Hamid Karzai will attend the event.

According to Suhartono, the security of all heads of state, who are included in the “Very Very Important Person” (VVIP)

category, is the responsibil-ity of all Indonesian security agencies. He pointed out that the heads of state will also be accompanied by their own security forces.

“The restriction with regard to weapons that can be brought into Indonesia by the other countries’ security forces has been communicated to all,” Suhartono said.

“Details such as how many weapons are allowed to be brought in, among other things, have been clearly communi-cated. If there are excess weap-ons, they will be withheld,” he added.

“The export value of fish and shrimp in September 2012 reached USD 10,219,000. It increased by 40.83 percent compared to August 2012 reaching USD 7,256,000. Meanwhile, the export value in September 2011 reached USD 7,300,000 or showed an increase of 39.98 percent compared to the same month in 2012,” he said.

Admittedly, the fish and shrimp commodity had become the Bali’s potential commodities that could bring in dominant foreign exchange compared to the eleven other export commodi-ties of Bali in the same period. So far, the market share in the export destination of Bali’s fish and shrimp targeted eleven countries with different absorption percentage. The market of the United States amounted to 17.99 percent, Thailand (5.08 percent), Australia (4.69 percent) and Hong Kong (3.75 percent).

Suarsa further admitted that other than becoming the export destination, Japan was also one of the countries becoming the origin country of the imported goods required by Bali so far. JAKARTA - The Ministry of Health has stated that nine government hos-pitals in Indonesia are likely to have international accreditation by 2014.

“We are preparing nine government hospitals for international accreditation by 2014,” said Supriyantoro, the Ministry of Health¿s Director General for Health Development Effort, at the 12th congress of All Indonesian Hospitals Association (PERSI) here on Wednesday.

He added that two state-owned hos-pitals Ciptomangunkusumo (RSCM) hospital in Jakarta and Sanglah hospital in Denpasar, Bali are likely to receive international accreditation by the end

of this year.Supriyantoro expressed hope that

other state-owned hospitals, such as Hasan Sadikin, Gatot Subroto, Karyadi, and Sardjito, would receive interna-tional accreditation in early 2013.

He said only five out of some 1,800 hospitals in Indonesia are internation-ally accredited, adding that all the five are privately owned.

NEW YORK — The nor’easter, as promised, brought gusting winds, rain, snow and the threat of flood-ing. It menaced travelers with icy roads, snarled the Long Island Rail Road and knocked out power to people who had only recently gotten it back after Superstorm Sandy.

But for the weary, relief is on the way. Joey Picca, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, says the unwelcome snow and high winds are slowly moving out of the New York City area. Commuters, though, may have to brave some lin-gering snowfall Thursday morning.

Elena McDonnell didn’t waste energy worrying about the new-est storm, not after living through Sandy last week and still without power in her Staten Island home. “It isn’t scary at all,” the 42-year-old said. “This is nothing.”

LONDON - Germany’s Angela Merkel on Wednesday warned Brit-ain not to turn its back on Europe and urged its Prime Minister David Cameron to work with her to avoid deadlock at European Union budget talks later this month.

The leaders met in London to try to iron out differences over the EU’s 1 trillion euro (800.5 billion pounds) budget that threaten to block a deal and fuel fears that London is drifting away from the 27-nation union.

Describing plans to increase the EU budget as “ludicrous”, Cameron has threatened to veto any deal he thinks is not in Britain’s interests and will push for a real-terms freeze.

However, German officials are exasperated by what they see as Lon-don’s slide towards Europe’s margins, a feeling reinforced last week after the British parliament voted to call for a real-terms cut in the EU’s budget.

Before meeting Cameron, the German Chancellor told the Europe-an Parliament she could not imagine a Europe without Britain, the world’s sixth largest economy, which relies on the EU for half its trade.

“I believe you can be very happy on an island, but being alone in this world

doesn’t make you any happier,” Merkel said after British politician Nigel Farage, leader of the anti-European UK Indepen-dence Party, urged her to tell Cameron that Britain should quit the EU.

the bloc under renegotiated terms, argues that the EU must tighten its belt at a time when the euro zone debt crisis looms large, and many countries are faced with austerity and shrinking household budgets.

Heavy rain on Wednesday night resulted in a number of flooding disasters and some buildings ava-lanched. Severe damage occurred in the rear of the office of Karangasem regent. Revetment at two locations respectively belonging to Totok and Ketut Sugi collapsed along some 7 meters.

There were no casualties or injuries. Aside from the damage due to the collapsed house revet-ment, another flooding occurred in the office area of the Karangasem regent. Gravel, earth and even tens of banana trees were swept away and scattered in the parking lot next to Wantilan Hall of the regent’s office.

On Wednesday morning, the staff and janitors worked together to clean up the road and the office area of the regent. One of the staff whose house was in the back of the Karangasem regent’s office, I Wayan Putra, with a number of people had cleaned up the road body behind the regent’s office since early morning. Such flood-ing swept away the banana trees, garbage and the road body, while some other parts were covered by mud and the road body was crushed by flooding.

The flood crashing into the re-gent’s office was alleged to have been caused by persistent farm-land conversion at the surrounding

area, particularly in the western part. Some hectares of the terraced rice fields had been converted into the area of regent’s office and settlement. As a result, the farmland formerly served as the rainwater catchment area had reduced.

Meanwhile, at Bangras hamlet in the town of Amlapura, dozens of houses were inundated with water for some eight hours. Stagnant wa-ter in a small river and narrowing channel caused the water to over-flow, while the narrow watershed was even clogged by rubbish.

Meanwhile, dozens of traders in Karangsokong Market closed their stall due to the rain and the floor was flooding as the sewer burst. The flooding caused a number of basic food commodities sold by traders to be inundated. Two of the traders, Mrs. Hajas and Mrs. Merta Asih, claimed to suffer a loss as their rice, sticky rice, wheat and maize were damaged. They claimed to suffer a loss worth IDR 2 million because their goods were inundated with water.

In addition, landslides also oc-curred at some locations like the revetment of Ki Kopang Square at Seraya Tengah along 4 meters with a width and height of three meters. Besides, the revetment of temple compound wall in Seraya region was also reported to avalanche. (013)

Clean water crisis still haunts some people of Pecatu, South Kuta subdistrict. Water supply from the Municipal Waterworks (PDAM Tir-ta Mangutama) of Badung Regency to Pecatu handled by PT Tirtaartha Buanamulia (TB) is often ham-pered. Moreover, currently there is an allegation if a water trader manipulates the pipe connection of the Municipality Waterworks.

Komang Sujana, a resident of Pecatu, was disappointed with the service provided by the Municipal-ity Waterworks. Though having paid, the water problem still fre-quently happened. Classic problem continued to haunt the residents. As solution to the trickling water supply of the Municipality Water-works, many residents were forced to buy water supplied by a tank truck. A tank of water cost IDR 150,000.

Water supply service provided by tank truck was considered help-ful. But behind it, the residents suspected there were individuals such as the water service providers that intentionally clogged the water

pipe connection to the house of residents. When the water supply to people’s house did not work, they would buy the water provided. Such practices were clearly detrimental to residents and government. There-fore, he hoped the relevant agencies could immediately intervene to overcome it.

Chairman of Commission B of the Badung House, I Made Sumerta, reminded the government to give at-tention to the clean water crisis issue afflicting the Pecatu area for long time. Aside from having an impact on the community, the water supply disruption had also occurred in the area of Uluwatu Temple which was a tourist destination. “It should be addressed immediately. Government and the Municipality Waterworks in particular must immediately find a solution,” he said.

Badung Regency itself had a clean water program as part of the environ-mental health priorities. The Regent of Badung, AA Gde Agung, in the plenary session of the Badung House on Wednesday (Nov 7) explained that a total of IDR 6.8 billion would be allocated in 2013 so that the water supply could cover 83.8 percent of the

region. It was directed to the supply of clean water infrastructure worth IDR 6.7 billion and the operations and maintenance of water supply facilities worth IDR 119 million.

The activities were aimed at the provision of clean water at Dangin Peken hamlet, Penarungan village as much as IDR 559 million, wa-ter supply infrastructure on Jalan Pantai Balangan, South Kuta, worth IDR 2 billion, clean water at Taman village, Abiansemal (IDR 850 million), Sawangan hamlet, Benoa Village, South Kuta (IDR 458 million) and Canggu hamlet, North Kuta subdistrict (IDR 2.5 billion). However, Pecatu village having experienced the water crisis for a long time was not included in the program.

Related to the issue of water supply to Pecatu area, General Manager of PT TB, Daniel J Fony, in the anniversary celebration of the Municipal Waterworks (PDAM Tirta Mangutama) recently said the problem was only partial or did not occur at Pecatu on the whole. In four quick years, First Lady Michelle Obama has become one of the most influential women in fashion, catapulting small name designers like Rachel Roy, Jason Wu, Thakoon, and Prabal Gurung to fame, and putting mall brands like J.Crew and the Gap back on the map. President Barack Obama took the stage with his family and was greeted by thunderous applause from his supporters as he signed on for four more years as commander-in-chief.

The first lady always keeps us guessing when it comes to clothes, but one quick glimpse at her outfit and we knew exactly what she was wearing: A red brocade Michael Kors shift dress she’s worn publically at least twice before--once to a 2009 holiday event at the White House, and again at a November 2010 Medal of Honor Ceremony in Washington, D.C. Just as she did in 2010, Obama paired the high-neck, knee-length frock with a cropped, three-quarter-sleeve cardigan and a large, purple jeweled brooch. She accessorized with very pointy black kitten heels and a dark-colored manicure.

Shopping her closet for this monumentous occasion was a calcu-lated move that we -- and probably many women -- could appreciate. Obama has expressed her love for affordable shops like Target, and while we’re sure this Michael Kors dress didn’t come cheap, the first lady is getting her money’s worth by wearing it again and again. Michael Kors, whose company went public nearly a year ago, is one of the most celebrated and successful American

designers, something that also may have encouraged the first lady to wear his design.

But the first lady did not shine alone. Her proud daughters were dressed in colorful, age-appropriate, girly outfits. Malia Obama, 14, wore a black, fitted scoopneck top paired with a shiny, pleated, blue silk skirt, black flats, and a playful, hot-pink belt. Sasha, 11, wore a green-and-black abstract printed skirt, a black blouse with a sweet bow, and a grey cardigan. Her finishing touches: a layered beaded necklace and green-and-black cap-toe flats.

Looking across party lines, the would-be first lady Ann Romney has also wore many noteworthy en-sembles while on the campaign trail. Though her $990 Reed Krakoff bird blouse was critically panned, we’ve admired Romney’s desire to take fashion risks and her many stunning outfits, like the green ombre Oscar de la Renta dress she wore to the last presidential debate in October. After Mitt Romney gave his conces-sion speech to supporters in Boston, Massachusetts, Ann took his hand wearing a bright red bateau-neck sheath dress with three-quarter-length sleeves. She accessorized with black patent pumps, her gold watch, the clear beaded necklace she wore at the last debate, dark nail polish, red glossy lips, and a bouf-fant updo. Red is the official color of the Republican party, and a color that Romney has favored throughout the previous months, including the memorable silk taffeta de la Renta dress she wore to the Republican National Convention.

If there’s one thing that can po-larize even the most apathetic sorts, it’s the Ugg boot. Love ‘em or hate ‘em - everybody’s got something to say. EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

During the workshop the participants were introduced to Korean cooking techniques and prepared the following dishes, Beoseot Sanjeok grilled beef with mushroom skewers, Kimchi, the traditional Korean condiment of pickled cabbage with chilli and Bulgogi, sautéed marinated beef with potato glass noodle.

Chef Ham’s professional culinary experience includes leading luxury hotels; as well as the famed Cheong Wa Dae or “Blue House”, the ex-ecutive office and official residence of the South Korean head of state, where he served as personal chef for two previous Korean Presidents.

Banyan Tree Ungasan, Bali hosted a Korean cooking workshop for the mem-bers of the young Chefs Club Indonesia Bali Chapter (yCCI Bali). The workshop took place at BAMBU restaurant and conducted by Chef Myung Chul Ham, the Korean guest chef from Banyan Tree Club & Spa Seoul who is visiting the luxury hotel resort for the “Taste of Korea” promotion taking place October 2012.

These phenomena indicate that crimes spreading to students are progressively alarming so that they must get a more serious attention from school and Bali Education Agency and Education Agency of the regencies/munici-pality throughout Bali, including their parents.

Contacted on Wednesday (Nov 7), two education observers, namely Putu Rumawan Salain, and Putu Sarjana claimed to be sad when reading the news in the media that revealed the crime committed by teenagers having the status as students. Both as-sessed that juvenile delinquency acts in Bali had now been getting more alarming. They were no lon-ger limited to commit a mischief act such as quarrel among the students, but had been entering into the world of crime.

“These phenomena should be examined seriously by all par-ties. Just imagine, the junior high school children are arguably still inexperienced teenager, but have dared to commit such determined act,” said Rumawan Salain.

Though not willing to convict the delinquency leading to crime as evidence of school failure to build the character of students, Rumawan Salain hoped the school could reap valuable lessons from case to further intensify the su-pervision. One of the solutions offered was that the school was asked to increase the supervision against the students by fostering home visit.

Such home visit did not only target the problematic students but also applied to all students. “In this context, every teacher is

worthy to be given a responsi-bility to develop and oversee 10 to 20 students. By doing so, the problematic students and those potentially having a problem can be detected earlier so they would not get mired in committing a crime,” he said.

Family milieu

Meanwhile, Putu Sarjana re-minded that the development of children was also greatly influenced by the milieu, in-cluding the family and outside the school. In this context, the lecturer of the Hindu University of Indonesia did not agree if the mistake related to the emergence of crime among the students was blamed entirely on the school. He emphasized the criminal cases committed by a few students did not reflect the failure of schools in building their students because teachers or schools could not monitor them around the clock.

“By all means, the responsibil-ity of supervision against the stu-dent after school lies in the hands of parents, families and commu-nities. Moreover, the involvement of students in the crimes mostly takes place at night, where it has become the responsibility of parents and families. Neverthe-less, I also expect the school to provide guidance specifically for the students getting involved in crimes. As such, student will be aware of their duties as a student and realize what they have done is a big mistake,” he said.

When contacted separately, Deputy Principal of SMAN 3 Denpasar senior high school, in charge of Student Affairs, I Ketut Arya Putra, said his party attempted to prevent the students from engaging in crime through the implementation of extra tight school discipline. Until now, he said, no students were involved in crime acts. Besides, his party also routinely held a raid at least once a month, controlling the discipline of students in terms of their attires and belongings in anticipation of the possibil-ity of students bringing along prohibited items to school such as drugs, alcohol, pornographic VCDs, sharp weapons and other prohibited items. Specifically to prevent the dissemination of pornographic products through cellular phone, the school also imposed a ban on bringing cellu-lar phone to school for students.

With such pattern, his party hoped the harmony among the students could be maintained without having to be separated by inter-class egoism, majors, and so on. “So far, we are very harmo-nious and remain to uphold the school discipline,” he said.
