The band is set to perform Saturday night at the Echoplex before a sold-out crowd that will be miniscule compared to the thousands who are set to see them launch their tour May 3 at the Staples Center.

Tickets were sold for $20 each — a fraction of what tickets to the tour will cost. Hundreds of fans lined up outside the El Rey Theatre earlier Saturday for a chance at the tickets. They were dispensed through a confusing lottery system that led to much of the crowd departing even though show tickets were

made available to lottery ticket holders.Buyers were limited to one ticket,

and were required to show a govern-ment-issued ID, pay with cash, wear a wristband with their name on it and be photographed. Their names will be veri-fied at the venue, which has a capacity of about 700. Cameras and smartphones will not be allowed inside.

Rumors of the spontaneous show spread across social networks this week after the band teased the appearance on their Twitter accounts. The dance-pop band New Build,

which was originally scheduled to play the Echoplex on Saturday, was first to leak details about the show.

“Our gig got shifted b/c the Rolling Stones are playing Echoplex,” the band posted Friday on Twitter. They joked that they’re looking forward to “having it out” with the Rolling Stones.

The Rolling Stones performed a few dates together in London, Brooklyn, New York, and Newark, New Jersey, last winter, but didn’t announce a tour until earlier this month. They will play 17 dates in the United States but said they may add more down the line.

The lowest price for tickets to the show at the Staples Center, which has a capacity of about 20,000, is $250.

The Tribeca Film Festival has ended on a royal note with Jerry Lewis showing up at the 30th anniversary screening of “The King of Comedy.”

The 87-year-old comedian-actor walked out to thunderous applause after the screening Saturday, joining co-star Robert De Niro and director Martin Scorsese.

Lewis answered questions about the making of the film and brought the audience to laughter with a tale about a guy he met on a subway train.

In the movie, Lewis plays a talk show host kidnapped by a deranged comedian played by De Niro.

De Niro founded the festival with producers Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff as a way to rebuild the neighborhood where the World Trade Center fell in the 9-11 attacks.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

opment, especially the tourism accommodation. He did not want the rules to be breached due to weak supervision of the government. In addition to af-fecting the image and authority of the government, the public would also be harmed.

To address the violation committed by Hotel Patas, this PDI-P politician urged the gov-ernment to send a reprimand. Such reprimand should not be

late or sent after the project had been accomplished. Commission B of the Ba-dung House, said Satria, had planned to hold a meeting with relevant agencies to seek clarification.

When asking for separate confirmation, Deputy Regent of Badung, I Ketut Sudikerta, after plenary session of the Badung House admitted last Friday that he had reminded the DCK Badung to maxi-mize its control. If a violation indeed happened, he admitted to have instructed the DCK Badung to send a reprimand. “If the reprimand is not heed-ed, it should be followed up with demolition,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Head of the DCK Badung, Dessy Dharmayanti, recently said the building permit of Hotel Patas was issued based on the recommendation of the Bali Public Works. Her par-ty had also made a study for it. Based on the study of the DCK Badung, the building of Hotel Patas was not on the land to be used for the Nusa Dua-Soka toll road. However, there was a part of the building established on the land planned for the toll road. The existing front building at this time, she said, was made temporarily and would be dismantled. (kmb25)

It was revealed by Commander of the IX Udayana Mili tary Region, Wisnu Bawa Tenaya, in the BaliTV/Bali Post open house with the Indonesian Armed Forces-National Police and chief of customary village across Bule-leng County in the courtyard of the Radio Singaraja FM on Jalan Singaraja-Seririt, Singaraja, Sat-urday (Apr 27).

Aside from Wisnu Bawa Ten-aya, the event was also attended by Commander of the Wirasatya Military Resort, Anton Nugroho, Commander of the 1609 Buleleng Military District Nugroho Dwi Hermawan, Chief of Buleleng Police Benny Arjanto, Chief of Buleleng Customary Village Middle Assembly Made Rim-bawa and Buleleng Regent rep-resented by he Head of Culture and Tourism Agency Jro Ketut Warkadea.

A total of 150 chiefs of custom-ary village throughout Buleleng attended the event. In addition, the non-commissioned military and police officers from all the villages in Buleleng were also present and following the event enthusiastically.

According to the Udayana Military Commander, Bali had in-digenous wisdom passed down by the ancestors and was important to be maintained for the sustain-ability of Bali. In the leadership occurred the concept known as the asta brata. It retained char-acter, manners and track record. They all should be considered. “Consider all of them and take the best smartly. Constitution also mandates that people should be made smart so that they will be cool, calm and confident,” he said.

In addition, the Commander also asked that people should not go angry when receiving a text message from a neighbor. Besides, they should not be easily provoked. He advised to avoid choosing the leader that provoked one another and choosing it with the right conscience. “The choice should be accounted to Supreme God. We believe in karma pala or the law of cause and effect,” he said.

In the event, the Commander kept on providing enlightenment vigorously and amicably to make changes in order to sustain Bali. One of the ways was through the movement of preserving the indigenous wisdom such as the

Commander of the IX Udayana Military Region, Wisnu Bawa Tenaya, in the BaliTV/Bali Post open house with the Indonesian Armed Forces-National Police and chief of customary village across Buleleng County in the courtyard of the Radio Singaraja FM on Jalan Singaraja-Seririt, Singaraja, Saturday (Apr 27).

Choose leader based on asta brata conceptBali Post

SINGARAJA - We were choosing a leader. In choosing a leader, there was an indigenous wisdom called asta brata. In choosing a leader, it should be considered its character, man-ners and track record.

culture, religion and environ-ment of Bali. According to him, the indigenous wisdom seemed to have degraded and faded. To that end, he invited all the chiefs of customary village in Buleleng to share ideas in the concept of eka ngaran luang. In other words, it was a sharing by uniting the mind, controlling emotion and keeping away from sad ripu or six enemies within the self.

According to him, to make a change and sustain Bali should be carried out wisely and more virtu-ously because Balinese ancestors had taught the people with the indigenous wisdom. There were wana kertih and segara kertih as well as the other indigenous wisdom teaching us to preserve Bali . Besides, we were also taught to preserve the sea, moun-

tain and beach. “To that end, the indigenous wisdom must be well maintained,” he said.

The Commander advised Bali-nese people to consider the local geomancy or asta kosala kosali. To achieve that, it needed an ap-plication so that it did not only lie in discourse, but it should be given an example. “It should not be carried out instantly and re-quires a mutual visit,” he said.

In the dialogue with the mil-i tary Commander, a number of chiefs of customary village conveyed their ideas to make a change in Bali by sustaining Bali. Ketut Sumiata, for instance, from Banyuning customary hamlet, Singaraja, said that Bali had been quasi-destroyed. Robberies began worrying. Foreign capi-tal turned rampant in Bali and the beach was under control of investors. For that, Bali needed a movement of change. To that end, it was needed a movement of change. “It is not just theory,” he said.

Meanwhile , Subrata from

Tegallenga customary village said the sustainability of Bali was the responsibility of all people and not just the responsibility of customary village. According to him, Bali was damaged because the Tri Hita Karana was forgotten due to disharmony between man and nature such as the existence of bare forest. To that end, he hoped there would be leader like a lion. As quoted from the Ra-mayana epic, it was mentioned the mountain was sustainable because it was guarded by lion. The lion was the leader, while the Military Commander and Police Chief were the officers. Mean-while, the customary villages were like vines and meadows. “So, there must be a lion if we want the mountain and forest to remain sustainable,” he said.

Another participant, Ketut Ar-dika, from Jinengdalem, stated that sustainable Bali should indeed be realized by a movement of preserv-ing the environment. According to him, the environment should be preserved. “Let’s preserve the

mangrove. It is not just the man-grove, but also the environment of Bali as a whole,” he said.

CEO of Bali Post Media Group (KMB), Satria Naradha, in the open house left a message to the chiefs of customary village where they might not be disappointed to see the condition of Bali as delivered by a number of chiefs of customary village. Customary villages should constantly make a change vivaciously in Bali. Com-mitment of the customary village chief as a fortress of Balinese indigenous culture was no longer doubted. To that end, he was very proud because through the open house the customary village had a commitment to make a change for Bali from Buleleng. “Chang-ing from Buleleng is not neces-sarily carried out by prostituting Balinese villagers. However, it should be done by forwarding their identity. We have good hu-man resources and should know how to make changes in order to improve the human resources,” he said. (kmb15)

“It was one thing to read about it in books, but reality is something different,” recalled Vaclav Sitner, a member of the team tasked with creating a premium whisky. Now, almost 40 years on, the last batches of “Hammer Head” are winning rave reviews. And, in a historical twist, they are owned by a U.S. hedge fund that bought the beverage company that Sitner worked for.

Sitner, whose name still appears on the label, recalls the “alchemy” and “joy” as they concocted the whisky. It sold well despite its relatively high price in a communist economy.

In Czechoslovakia, living standards were higher than in most other com-munist nations, but only a limited vari-ety of Western products were available at special stores for those privileged enough to have access to foreign cur-rency. In common stores, there was a significant shortage of Western goods, from bananas to electronics.

PRADLO DISTILLERY, Czech Republic — The Scottish peat was put on trucks and trains. The destination was Com-munist-era Czechoslovakia. The recipient: apparatchiks desper-ate for a decent whisky. The journey beyond the Iron Curtain during the Cold War turned out to be the easy part. When the batch arrived, the Czech distillers had only a faint idea how to make whisky — and it took years to get things right.

In this Thursday, April 25, 2013 photo Petr Nemy, an whisky expert, tastes the single malt “Hammer Head” whisky in a bar in Prague, Czech Republic. The “Hammer Head” whisky made in communist Czechoslovakia matured in oak barrels for more than twenty years to reach surprisingly good quality before hitting the market.

“There were no means to import foreign whisky,” Sitner said. Com-munist states’ currencies were not con-vertible and the struggling command economies failed to produce enough decent goods to sell in exchange for hard currency. The original plan was to source all the ingredients and equip-ment locally — but met no luck.

“The problem was with the peat, because it didn’t work,” said Sitner. “The peat we had was from South Bohemia and in combination with oak shavings it created all sorts of problems.”

“It was the most expensive peat in Europe. The (Scottish) peat didn’t ac-tually cost that much but the transport cost a fortune. We placed it on trucks and a train carriage. One carriage was enough for us for 5-6 years.”

Sitner and his colleagues had to rely completely on their own skills since they had no chance to travel to Scotland to visit distilleries. They

needed a good barley supplier and knowledge of how to grind it, a source of suitable water and new oak barrels where the product could mature for at least three years.

A small distillery in Pradlo, in the west of the country, coinciden-tally had a hammer mill of the kind used in Scottish distilleries. Dating from the 1920s, it was the only one

in the entire country. Work started in 1976; three years of tests were needed before trial production could start — and mass production started eight years later.

Navajo the chosen one for new ‘Star Wars’ dubfilm that launched a science fiction empire and revealed the force within a farm boy who battles evil has been dubbed in Japanese, French, Spanish

and about a dozen other languages. Add Navajo to the list.

Manuelito Wheeler, the director of the Navajo Nation Museum who reached out to Lucasfilm Ltd. with the idea, has a very good feeling about this. He sees it as entertaining, educational and a way to preserve the Navajo language at a time when fewer tribal members are speaking it.

“That’s the beauty of what we’re do-ing; we’re teaching Navajo language to anybody who wants to learn the Navajo language,” Wheeler said. “I find that very rewarding and somewhat ironic. We went from a country that wanted to limit our language, to the Navajo language saving our country through Code Talkers, to our language being part of a major motion picture.”

Native languages on the big screen are a rarity. Independent films and documentaries at film festivals have been in the tongue of American In-dian tribes. Yet it’s far less common to see it done in mainstream movies and shown in commercial theaters. “Bambi” was dubbed in the Arapaho language, and the cartoon series “The Berenstain Bears” was translated into

the Dakota and Lakota languages.“There’s a little bit of precedent

but nothing like ‘Star Wars’ in the Navajo language,” said Michael Smith, director of the American In-dian Film Institute and a member of the Sioux Tribe of Montana.

A team of five Navajo speakers spent 36 hours translating the script for “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope,” and now they’re looking for fluent Navajo speakers to fill some two dozen roles. Casting calls are scheduled Monday in Burbank, Calif., and May 3 and 4 — the unofficial “Star Wars” holiday — at the Navajo Nation Museum in Window Rock, Ariz.

Potential actors shouldn’t worry if they don’t sound exactly like Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker or Han Solo, only that they have Princess Leia’s spunk and fire or Han Solo’s daring, bad-boy-next-door attitude. Chew-bacca and R2D2 will keep the language they speak in the Navajo version, and technical effects will be applied to Darth Vader and C-3PO so they sound like the originals, said Shana Priesz, senior director of localization for Deluxe, the studio overseeing the dubbing.

“Having the voice match isn’t as much as I want someone who can deliver the lines,” she said.

Wheeler and William Nakai, one of the translators, declined to say how some catch phrases or sci-fi jargon in the movie might carry over into Navajo. But Laura Tohe, a fluent Navajo speaker and English professor at Arizona State University said the translation process could have been similar to what Navajo Code Talkers did in coming up with communication that confounded the Japanese during World War II.

The Code Talkers recruited from the Navajo Nation were unfamiliar with things like grenades, observa-tion planes, tanks and dive-bombers. So they thought of something on the reservation that had similar qualities. Grenades became potatoes, obser-vation planes became owls, tanks became tortoises and so on.

“May the force be with you,” might translate into “may you walk with great power,” or “may you have the power within you,” she said. It also might include a reference to moun-tains, which are a source of strength for the Navajo people.

CANJUERS ARMY BASE, DRAGUIGNAN, France - Explo-sions echo through a valley in southern France, sending up plumes of smoke as four Caesar self-propelled guns fire at distant targets in drills that mirror operations in Mali.

It’s a show of firepower organized by arms manufacturer Nexter to demonstrate the guns to the press and which underlines the role of the army in a conflict that has bolstered France’s standing as a nation that can project military force. Yet the message may fall on deaf ears in Paris.

France’s 31 billion euro ($40 bil-lion) defense budget, already watered down in recent years, could be on the chopping block as President Francois Hollande seeks savings to offset a groaning deficit and weak economic growth. Cuts could send shockwaves not only through the military but through the economy itself, where the industry employs 165,000 people and accounts for 2.25 percent of output, ac-cording to the World Bank, compared with 1.3 percent in Germany.

On Monday, the government pres-ents a five-year blueprint for military strategy that the army fears could cut

its staff and international bases and undermine France’s capabilities in future global conflicts.

“We’re right at the edge,” a colonel at Canjuers, Western Europe’s biggest army base, told Reuters, asking not to be quoted by name. “Certainly there wouldn’t be any more Malis.”

The document delivered on Mon-day will define the national security and defense strategy for the coming

years, offering clues as to priorities but no hard figures. The actual 2014-19 military budget will be unveiled in the last quarter of 2013.

The military and defense contrac-tors such as Nexter, headquartered in Versailles near Paris, say big cuts could hamper the ability of France, a nuclear power with a permanent U.N. Security Council seat, to react to international threats.

Four people were pulled alive from the wreckage of the Rana Plaza, which housed several factories making low-cost garments for Western retailers, four days after the country’s worst-ever industrial accident. Rescuers worked frantically through the morning to release several others who fire service Deputy Director Mizanur Rahman said were trapped under the mound of broken concrete and metal.

“The chances of finding people alive are dimming, so we have to step up our rescue operation to save any valuable life we can,” said Major General Chowdhury Hassan Sohrawardi, coordinator of the operation at the site. About 2,500 people have been rescued from the remains of the building in the commercial suburb of Savar, about 30 km (20 miles) from the capital, Dhaka.

Officials said the eight-storey tower had been built on spongy ground without the correct permits, and more than 3,000 work-ers - mainly young women - had been sent in on Wednesday morning despite warn-ings that it was structurally unsafe. Police

said one factory owner gave himself up following the detention of two plant bosses and two engineers the day before.

The owner of the building, identified by police as Mohammed Sohel Rana, a leader of the ruling Awami League’s youth front, was still on the run. Airport and border authorities have been alerted to prevent Rana from fleeing the country.

Police have also detained several of his relatives to compel him to surrender and to find out where he might be. Local news reports said his mother, who was not being held, died of a heart attack on Saturday evening.

Anger at the negligence sparked days of protests and clashes, with police using tear gas, water cannons and rubber bul-lets to quell demonstrators who set cars ablaze. On Sunday, however, the roads were quiet.

The main opposition, joining forces with an alliance of leftist parties which is part of the ruling coalition, called for a national strike on May 2 in protest over the incident.

PYONGYANG, North Korea — The heart of this city, once famous for its Dickensian darkness, now pulsates with neon. Glossy new construction downtown has altered the Pyongyang skyline. Inside supermarkets where shopgirls wear faux French designer labels, people with money can buy Italian wine, Swiss chocolates, kiwifruit imported from New Zealand and fresh-baked croissants. They can get facials, lie in tanning booths, play a round of mini golf or sip cappuccinos.

Nearly 2 million people are using cell phones. Computer shops can’t keep up with demand for North Korea’s lo-cally distributed tablet computer, popularly known here as “iPads.” A shiny new cancer institute features a $900,000 X-ray machine imported from Europe.

Pyongyang has long been a city apart from the rest of North Korea, the showcase capital dubbed a “socialist fairyland” by state media.

But a year after new leader Kim Jong Un promised publicly to bring an end to the “era of belt-tightening” and economic hardship in North Korea, the gap between the haves and have-nots so far has only grown with Pyong-yang’s transformation. Beyond the paved main streets of the capital, life remains grindingly tough. Food is rationed, electricity is a precious commodity and people get around by walking, cycling or hopping into the backs of trucks. Most homes lack running water or plumbing. Health care is free, but aid workers say medicine is in short supply.

Tabanan (Bali Post)—

Ahead of the Bali gubernatorial election, the Tabanan Police ranks performed the security intensively. One of them was by holding a raid to box vehicles passing on bypass road as car-ried out on Friday (Apr 26). The entire box vans were examined closely.

Aside from box vans, the officers also raided private vehicles. The raid was held at 11:00 a.m. at the Adipura Post Pesiapan for several hours. Every passing box van was asked to move aside. Then, the riot squad and traffic affairs unit in-spected every corner of the vehicle. Even, their box door should be opened and then their cargo was investigated. “Pursuant to the instruction, the target of raid is box van and private vehicle carrying the explosives and sharp weapons,” said Chief of Traffic Patrol of Tabanan Police, Srinata, after leading the raid.

The officer explained the raid could ensnare

at least 20 box vans, dozens of trailers and tens of private vehicles. However, among the ensnared vehicles, it was not found any hazard-ous and suspicious cargo. “As the results of the probe made by our members, all the vehicles raided were still safe,” he affirmed. Proved not to violate, they were allowed to resume their journey.

According to Srinata, similar raid would continue to be held. However, the location would move. He said the raid was a part of the creating condition operation ahead of the Bali gubernatorial election. “We want to minimize the criminal cases before the gubernatorial election. One of them is by pursuing explosives or sharp weapons brought in from outside the island,” he explained. Tabanan serving as the buffer area of Denpasar, said Srinata, should be secured more intensively by raiding vehicles so that no intruder could enter into the capital of the province. (kmb30)

When compared to Kertha Gosa tourist attraction, the historical value contained therein actually is in a single entity with the history of Klungkung kingdom. Unfortunately, the develop-ment of Kertha Gosa as a tourist object has no impact on the Puputan Klung-kung Monument tourist attraction which is only separated by the Catur Muka statue.

As monitoring at location last Friday, the monument displays a variety of life stories during the Klungkung kingdom era, ranging from the people’s socio-economic life, the development of culture to the time when the kingdom chose to fight and finally had to surrender to the Dutch colonization. The stories are arranged neatly on the monument wall along with dioramas describing the incidents occurred.

The data of the Klungkung Culture and Tourism Agency indicated the number of tourist visiting the Kertha Gosa tourist attraction reached 60,262 people in 2012. Meanwhile, absolutely no single tourist visited the Puputan Klungkung Monument. In fact, the agency stated to only seriously man-age four tourist attractions as booster of the Klungkung regionally generated revenue (PAD) in the field of tourism such as the Kertha Gosa, Goa Lawah, Levi Rafting and Nusa Penida area. Of the four attractions, the region-ally generated revenue in 2012 ob-tained from tourism amounted to IDR 1,411,547,958.

According to the former Regent of Klungkung, Tjokorda Gde Ngurah, who was directly involved in the es-tablishment of the monument, said the monument was established as a

physical evidence of the spirit of the struggle made by people of Klungkung in the past. Not only that, the monument also gave an illustration on the key events regarding the historical passage of struggle to uphold Balinese human dignity and sovereignty of Bali Island. In the war between the Kingdom of Klungkung and the Dutch troops, it was closed with a tragic climax namely the death of the king, relatives and some people better known as Puputan Klungkung. Such incident was then commemorated every April 28 as the Puputan Klungkung Day.

Meanwhile, according to Dewa Soma, an observer of religion, cus-toms and culture of Bali, the Puputan Klungkung Monument had become a personality trait of Semarapura town, as the axis of town splendor. This monu-ment was inspired by the lingam-yoni concept with the height of 28 meters, 4 doors and eight steps. “The numbers represent the date April 28, 1908 when the Puputan Klungkung war occurred. Besides, it also retains the statue of the king of Klungkung Ida I Dewa Agung Jambe with his faithful followers and the story of the people’s struggle in the Puputan Klungkung war against the Dutch troops,” he said.

According to him, the Puputan Klungkung Monument standing majes-tically was not just a memorial of the past time, but also retained the histori-cal values that should be imitated and maintained as guidance of life by the successors. “From the monument, we can learn about the vivacity, thought and concept as well as the ideas of the predecessors, religion, culture and leadership of building Klungkung,” he said. Puputan Klungkung Monument stands rigidly in the heart of Semarapura town. Hearing the name, the monument is indeed closely related to the all-out war occurred in the Kingdom of Klungkung in its day. Aside from being established to commemorate the struggle of the Klungkung kingdom, the monument is actually also functioned as a tourist attraction. Unfortunately, with such a status, no single tourist has visited the monument.

TOKYO - Global sales of instant noodles have topped 100 billion units annually, an industry group said Friday -- more than one monthly serving of the portable meal for every person on the planet.

Five decades after the easy-to-cook food’s launch, sales climbed again last year with China, Indonesia and Japan rounding out the world’s top-three consumers, according to the Japan-based World Instant Noodles Association.

“The results show that in-stant noodles have become a global standard dish,” said Norio Sakurai, an official with

the Osaka-based association.“We think global sales will

continue growing particularly in some developing nations.”

Of the 101.4 billion units sold worldwide last year, Chi-na, including Hong Kong, accounted for 44.0 billion servings, followed by Indo-nesia with 14.1 billion units, Japan at 5.4 billion units and Vietnam close behind with 5.1 billion units.

Instant noodles, which come dried or pre-cooked and can be boiled quickly with accompa-nying flavour packets, were invented in Japan by Momo-fuku Ando, founder of major noodle maker Nissin Foods, in 1958.

The Commerce Department said economic growth accelerated to a 2.5 percent annual rate in the January-March quarter, missing the 3.1 percent forecast of econo-mists polled by FactSet, a financial data provider. That was up from an anemic 0.4 percent annual growth rate in the October-December quarter.

Consumer spending surged at an annual rate of 3.2 percent — its biggest jump since the end of 2010. Growth was also helped by businesses, which responded to the greater demand by rebuilding their stockpiles. And home construction rose further.

Government spending sank at a 4.1 percent annual rate, led by another deep cut in defense spending. The decline kept last quarter’s increase in economic growth below expectations of a 3 percent rate or more.

US economy accelerates at 2.5 percent rate in Q1

WASHINGTON — Americans shrugged off higher taxes to lift the U.S. economy at the start of the year. Government spending fell, though, and the impact of the tax increases along with federal budget cuts could slow growth later this year.

Many economists say they think growth as measured by the gross domestic product is slowing in the April-June quarter to an an-nual rate of just 2 percent. Most foresee growth remaining around that subpar level for the rest of the year.

Sal Guatieri, senior economist at BMO Capital Markets, predicts an annual growth rate of 2 percent for the April-June quarter and a 3 percent rate in the second half of the year.

“The second-half acceleration will be supported by improved household finances, pent-up de-mand for autos and the on-going recovery in housing,” Guatieri says. “We are seeing significant housing-related consumer pur-chases in such areas as furni-ture.”

GDP is the broadest gauge of the economy’s health. It measures the

total output of goods and services produced in the United States, from haircuts and hamburgers to airplanes and automobiles.

In a healthy economy, with an unemployment rate between 5 percent and 6 percent, GDP growth of 2.5 percent or 3 percent would be considered solid. But today’s still-struggling economy, with unemployment at 7.6 percent, needs faster growth to generate enough jobs to quickly shrink unemployment.

Since the Great Recession officially ended in June 2009, growth has remained weaker than usual after a severe downturn. In part, that’s because the recession followed the worst financial cri-sis since Great Depression. The economy expanded just 2.4 per-cent in 2010, 1.8 percent in 2011 and 2.2 percent in 2012.

This had been expected to

be the year when growth would finally reach a more robust 3 per-cent to 4 percent pace. But across-the-board government spending cuts, which began taking effect March 1, have made that unlikely. The cuts are forcing agencies to furlough workers, reducing spend-ing on public projects and making businesses nervous about invest-ing and hiring.

Unless Congress and the White House reach a deal to reverse them, the government spending cuts will continue through the end of the year and beyond.

Consumers’ take-home pay has also fallen because President Ba-rack Obama and Congress allowed a Social Security tax cut to expire. A person earning $50,000 a year has about $1,000 less to spend this year. A household with two high-paid workers has up to $4,500 less. Consumers’ take-home pay is crucial to the economy because their spending drives roughly 70 percent of growth.

Americans appeared to shake off the tax increase at the start of the year. They spent more in

January and February, powered by a stronger job market.

But hiring slowed sharply in March. And consumers spent less at retail businesses, a sign that many were starting to feel the effects of the Social Security tax increase. Economists expect spending to stay weak in the April-June quarter as consumers adjust to smaller paychecks.

Last quarter, U.S. income growth slowed sharply after a surge in the final three months of 2012. The fourth-quarter gain had reflected a rush to pay dividends and make bonus payments before higher tax rates took effect Jan. 1. Incomes were also held back last quarter by the higher Social Security tax.

The jump in consumer spend-ing, along with slower income growth, meant that the saving rate fell to 2.6 percent of after-tax income in the first quarter. That was down from 4.7 percent in the October-December quarter.

The first-quarter growth figures will be revised twice more based on more complete data.

Textile Association (API) Bali ex-pected the government to issue a policy in the form of movement to put on typical Balinese traditional woven fabric or endek prevailed on a particular day on the island as a whole, as implemented by govern-ment agencies and private sector so far.

According to Chairman of the API Bali, Agung Mahendra, the move-ment was very good to support the conservation effort against the work of indigenous wisdom. Moreover, all this time the government officials especially in Bali Province and most workers of tourism industries in Bali had also put on endek fabric as mate-rial of their clothes.

“Endek as a Balinese fabric is a woven product that does not exist in the other region or elsewhere. At least, the movement of using endek attires can be made as a priority by the government and all the existing or-ganizations either the social, cultural, business, political organization and so on because there is no such movement in other regions,” he said.

Agung Mahendra added that when the movement could work well, of course it would become fresh air for the textile business especially in Bali because the upstream to the downstream sector should also have been well prepared such as the supply of yarns, mechanical looms (ATM) or non-mechanical loom (ATBM), dyeing stuff, reliable designer and

so on.Meanwhile, related to condition

of the textile industry in Bali, Agung Mahendra said the adage saying ‘misery loves company’ seemed very appropriate to be applied to the textile industry players which could survive until today. Amidst the effort of the entrepreneurs to maintain the business and prevent the layoffs due to resignation of the textile industry employees in Bali, they were also faced again with a variety of gov-ernment policies considered to be burdensome, one of which was the increase in the basic power tariff.

He said the recent downturn in the textile sector in Bali needed the intervention of government. “Central and provincial government so far pay less attention to the fate of the textile exporters,” he said.

As consequence, many human resources of Bali were then rarely get-ting involved in the textile industry. “The human resources of Bali tend to choose other jobs such as working was sales promotion girl (SPG) to shop as-sistant in supermarket,” he said.

Regarding the destination of the current export, said Mahendra, was still quite promising, namely some countries in Asia, Europe and the United States. However, he estimated the value of exports to those countries would not increase because the economic and finan-cial condition of the world had not recovered. Moreover, it was aggra-vated by the operation of foreign textile retailers in Bali. (kmb28)

It was expressed by the Sec-retary General of the Associa-tion of Indonesian Real Estate Broker (AREBI), Hartono Sarwono, in Denpasar.

“Bali has its own character, so that many foreign broker-ages are doing their activities in Bali. Moreover, many for-eigners and tourists are staying in Bali. To that end, we invite them to become a local player,” he said.

Nevertheless, the presence of foreign brokers operating in Bali should also be taxed. Their presence in Bali should not receive preferential treat-ment from the government in terms of taxes. “Many of them run their activities clandes-tinely. As a result, we lose a lot of taxes from those illegal foreign brokers,” he said.

He said the formation of the AREBI in Bali was expected to organize the competition and presence of local and foreign

brokers in order to be more organized. The association was also intended to keep the broker ethics so as not to compete un-fairly. In addition, local brokers also continued to stimulate and improve their quality. It could be done by constantly holding and following training and sem-inar on the up to date insights on property business.

“Until now, the member co-alesced into the AREBI reach-es more than 394 brokers. Our presence aims at increasing the competitiveness of local brokers to be more advanced and powerful,” he added.

Chairman of the AREBI Bali, Putu Subadha Kusuma, at the occasion stated that numerous brokers operated in Bali. Meanwhile, the member of the AREBI Bali had reached more than 65 from 15 compa-nies. A number of brokers from large companies had joined the membership.

His party would immediately certify the brokers becoming the members. “Our first pro-gram is focused on the certifica-tion of the members so that they will get broker license. Most of our members have owned the license, while the remaining have not and are going to be attempted later on,” he said.

As mentioned, establish-ment of the organization, he said, would facilitate the com-munication and cooperation among the brokers running their business in Bali. Nev-ertheless, he also said the members were still limited to brokers belonging to large companies.

“Our members are from 15 property companies. Therefore, we will promote the formation of the AREBI Bali to all the property companies in Bali, so that the brokers know about the existence of the association,” he affirmed. (kmb27)

The country’s agricultural sector development must be directed to-wards achieving three targets, namely agriculturally self-reliance, food self-sufficiency and economic equality, Fadel Muhammad, the chairman of the National Leadership Council (DPN) of the Indonesian Agribusiness and Agro Industry Community (MAI) and former maritime affairs and fisheries minister, said here on Saturday.

He said the agricultural sector in this country is currently in bad condi-tion given the fact that the agricultural commodity imports have reached 70 percent, while in the past it was only 20-30 percent.

“Besides, now there are business conspirators and mafia or food cartel hunting only for profits. They are just a handful of people who are not clear but could destroy the nation’s economy,”

he added. He also regretted the fact that

state-owned agricultural companies seem hopeless and therefore foreign companies have dominated the do-mestic market.

Indonesia’s food imports reached Rp81.5 trillion during the January-November 2012, which was very shocking, he said.

Coordinating Minister for Eco-nomic Affairs Hatta Rajasa on Satur-day appointed Fadel Muhammad the new chairman of the DPN MAI for the 2012-2017 period.

Hatta Rajasa said the government is making efforts to achieve a food sovereignty and food self-reliance.

The government will increase the agricultural productivity to stop rely-ing on food imports and to improve the people’s welfare.

The boats race which will be con-ducted at day and night time, is also

aimed to celebrate the 334th anniver-sary of the West Sumatra provincial city of Padang and in observance of 68th Indonesian independence an-niversary, he said.

According to him, the Dragon Boats race is aimed to promote the Minangkabau community culture to foreign tourists and promote the tour-ism potentials of West Sumatra and Padang municipality.

JAKARTA - Indonesia has eased re-strictions on some agricultural imports after the United States complained to the World Trade Organization over Jakarta’s “opaque and complex” rules, the trade ministry said.

The US first raised the issue with the trade body in January, citing Indo-nesia’s “broad use of import licensing measures that restrict imports” on a range of agricultural products.

It criticised the licensing system, which came into force last year, as “opaque and complex”, saying it was inconsistent with Indonesia’s WTO

obligations and was having an impact on US exports to the country.

Last month Indonesia rejected a US request for the creation of a WTO panel to settle the dispute but late Wednesday the trade ministry said it had eased the restrictions.

The number of horticultural prod-ucts regulated has been reduced by 18, the trade ministry said in a statement, adding that the new rules came into force on Monday. It made no mention of the WTO dispute.

The import of only 39 products would now be regulated, the ministry said. Products that are no longer regu-lated include garlic, garlic powder,

chili powder and cabbage. For those that are still regulated, the

process to apply for import permits had been simplified and could now be done online. “We want the permit pro-cess to be simpler and administration of imports to be more orderly so that a higher degree of business certainty can be achieved,” said ministry official Bachrul Chairi.

The case has put Indonesia under the spotlight at a time that former trade minister Mari Pangestu is in the running to lead the WTO, and as the country gears up to host the trade body’s ministerial meeting later this year.

AntaraJAKARTA - The Supreme Court

has rejected the appeal of former Bank Indonesia`s senior deputy governor Miranda Goeltom over a travel check bribery case, up-holding her three-year jail term previously meted out by lower and appellate courts.

“There is a legal fact proving that the convict has committed a series of deeds with the transfer of travel checks to legislators until she was elected senior deputy governor of Bank Indonesia (BI),” Artidjo Alkostar who chaired Supreme Court (MA)`s Appeal Panel on Miranda`s case, said here on Friday.

He said that the first level and appellate courts had considered relevant matters rightfully.

Artidjo said the MA`s verdict on Miranda`s appeal was decided by acclamation by all members of the judge panel which was chaired by Artidjo with judge members consisting of Justice Mohammad Askin and MS Lumme on Thurs-day, April 25.

The Corruption Crime Court has previously handed down a three-year jail sentence to Miranda with a fine of Rp100 million in lieu of three months in solitary confinement.

The corruption court said that Miranda was legally and convinc-

ingly proven guilty of violating article 5 point (1) of the Corruption Eradication Law in conjunction with article 55 point (1) of the Criminal Codes.

On this verdict, Miranda plead-ed an appeal to the higher court but the appellate court upheld the first level court decision.

The travel check bribery case has dragged at least 25 members of the House of Representatives (DPR) for the 1999 - 2004 period to the prison.

The court said Miranda was proven to have bribed 25 legisla-tors with the assistance of Nunun Nurbaeti, who had previously sentenced to 2.5 years.

Maduro said they would joint-ly spend $2 billion this year on “social development,” but it was not clear if he was discussing the 51 projects, few details of which were disclosed, or other works.

His visit appeared aimed in part at allaying Cuban worries about post-Chavez relations with the oil-rich South American nation that is Cuba’s biggest ally and benefactor. Venezuelan oil and money help keep the communist-ruled island’s troubled economy afloat and the governments have about 30 joint ventures, most of them in Venezuela.

“We have come to Havana, Cuba, to say to the people of Venezuela, the people of Cuba, all the people of Latin America ... are going to continue work-ing together, we came to ratify a strategic, historic alliance that transcends time, that is more a

brotherhood than an alliance,” Maduro said at a signing cer-emony in Havana’s main conven-tion center.

Maduro, a former bus driver and union leader, told reporters he met with former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, 86, for five hours on Saturday, “remembering Coman-dante Chavez, remembering that those two built this relationship.” Maduro narrowly won an April 14 election to replace Chavez, who died on March 5 after a long battle with cancer.

He ran basically as a Chavez surrogate who would continue his socialist policies both at home and abroad, including a close relationship with Cuba and Castro, whom Chavez considered his political mentor.

But his election opponent, Henrique Capriles, scored politi-cal points by criticizing the alli-

ance with Cuba, which combined with serious economic problems facing Venezuela, made Cubans worry they could lose their eco-nomic lifeline. Cuba receives an estimated 110,000 barrels a day of Venezuelan oil in exchange for money and the services of some 44,000 Cubans, most of them medical personnel, in Venezuela.

In 2000, Cuba and Venezuela created an intergovernmental commission that holds annual meetings to develop joint proj-ects in a wide range of areas, among them healthcare, educa-tion, culture and economics.

Cuban President Raul Castro, who spoke only briefly at the cer-emony, said that along with the 51 projects, they had agreed on memorandum of understanding for the development and adoption of a “bilateral economic agenda” for the next five years.

ROME - Two police officers were shot and wounded outside the Italian prime minister’s office on Sunday as Enrico Letta’s new government was being sworn in around a kilometer (mile) away at the president’s palace, police and witnesses said. One man, de-scribed by witnesses as well dressed, was arrested at the scene of the shooting where a crowd was waiting for Letta to arrive but it was initially unclear whether the attack was linked to the launch of the new government.

“We still have to understand who he is. He’s been caught,” Antonio Catricala, a cabinet undersecretary in the former govern-ment told reporters.

A police official told Reuters that the man was from the southern region of Calabria and having fired several shots at the two police on duty outside the prime minister’s office, he shouted “shoot me, shoot me” to other police nearby. Letta and his new cabinet were due to come to the prime minister’s office to accept a transfer of power from the outgoing government of Mario Monti at 1 p.m. (7:00 a.m. EDT).

One of the officers was shot in the neck and was in a serious con-dition, a police official said. Another was hit in the leg and was less seriously hurt. Italian media said a passer-by had also been injured but not seriously. Five or six shots were fired and police had found five spent shells from a small caliber weapon, another official said.

Letta, 46, the moderate deputy head of the Democratic Party (PD), on Saturday ended two months of political stalemate since February’s inconclusive election when he brought together former political rivals in a broad coalition government.

Letta’s ministers stepped forward one by one to swear allegiance to the republic before President Giorgio Napolitano, who person-ally picked Letta as prime minister and had a central role in the choice of his cabinet team.

ALGIERS - Algerian Presi-dent Abdelaziz Bouteflika was transferred to France for medi-cal tests on Saturday night after suffering a minor stroke, Alge-ria’s official news agency said. Bouteflika, who has ruled over the North African oil and gas producer for more than a de-cade, had an “transient ischemic attack” or mini-stroke on Satur-day but his condition was not serious, the APS agency said, quoting the prime minister.

The 76-year-old is part of an older generation of leaders who have dominated politics in a country that supplies a fifth

of Europe’s gas imports and cooperates with the West in combating Islamist militancy. He has rarely appeared in public in recent months, prompting speculation about his health.

“The president felt unwell and he has been hospitalized but his condition is not serious at all,” Prime Minister Abdel-malek Sellal was quoted as saying by APS. The president was then moved to France, on the recommendation of his doctors.

Bouteflika and other mem-bers of Algeria’s elite have controlled Algeria since it won independence from France in a 1954-62 war.

Garcia (26-0, 16 KOs) domi-nated the 35-year-old former cham-pion from Brooklyn, although Judah came back in the 10th and 11th rounds to land some hard shots and shake the champion from Philadelphia.

The judges scored the fight 116-111, 115-112 and 114-112, with all three giving Judah the last three rounds when Garcia seemed to tire. “I love the atmosphere. I love the fans. In order to take over some-one’s territory, you’ve got to beat the guy from there,” Garcia said in the post-fight news conference.

The 25-year-old Garcia was at the receiving end of a hard left-handed shot from Judah in the eighth round. He countered with a left that missed, but immediately connected a right hand that sent Judah to the canvas.

Judah (42-8, 29 KOs), who since

2008 has lost to Floyd Mayweather, Miguel Cotto and Amir Khan, came in looking for a win in an attempt to revive his career after those losses, but looked overmatched against Garcia.

“Actually I was really surprised because I was putting pressure on him with strong, sharp punches,” Garcia said. “He came back strong in the late rounds. He came pre-pared. He’s been in big fights before.”

A portion of the announced crowd of 13,048 tried to inspire the Brooklyn native with “Ju-dah! Judah!” and a familiar “Brook-lyn! Brook-lyn!” chant that has become synonymous with NBA games featuring the Nets in the arena’s first months.

But it wasn’t enough for Judah, whose 140-pound fight was sup-posed to take place back Feb. 9,

but was postponed after Garcia sus-tained a rib injury. Judah claimed Garcia had faked the injury and had instead been out partying and not training. There was even a standoff between the veteran and Garcia’s father, Angel, who also serves as his trainer.

“It was a helluva fight. I had to beat the Brooklyn guy in his home-town,” Garcia said. “I knew he had a lot of pride behind him. He was never going to give up.” Coming into the fight, Judah saw Garcia as slow starter.

“He started fast in this fight. I wanted to be cautious. I didn’t want to go in there and be throwing wild punches. I wanted to be a scientist in there,” Judah said. “I thought I did a good job.”

Garcia stepped up his attack in the third round and, then in the fourth, landed a flurry of shots, but Judah somehow managed to survive the round.

It was Garcia’s second fight at the Barclays Center after christen-ing the Brooklyn arena Oct. 20 with a victory over Erik Morales.

CHICAGO — Chicago’s Nate Robinson dragged his team back from a 14-point deficit late in regu-lation time and the Bulls went on to beat the Brooklyn Nets 142-134 in triple overtime on Saturday, taking a 3-1 lead in their NBA first-round playoff series.

The Bulls were trailing 109-95 with less than 4 minutes to go in the fourth quarter when Robinson took over, carrying the hosts to a thrilling victory.

In other games, Oklahoma City also moved within one win of a se-ries victory by holding off hard-fin-ishing Houston, Memphis squared its series against the Los Angeles Clippers at 2-2, and Atlanta sharply turned around its fortunes with a comfortable win over Indiana, cut-ting the series deficit to 2-1.

Robinson finished with 34 points, scoring all but five of them after the third quarter, including the first 12 in a 14-0 run that wiped out the defi-cit. “I always think I’m on fire, kind of like the old school game NBA Jam,” he said. “You make a couple in a row, the rim’s on fire. You shoot the ball, the ball’s on fire.

“Whenever I’m in the game, I just play with a lot of confidence. You kind of have to lie to yourself and feel like you can’t miss.”

Robinson scored with two sec-onds left in the first overtime and that looked enough to secure the win, but Joe Johnson replied for Brooklyn to send it into a second overtime, tied 121-121.

The Bulls had a chance to win in the closing seconds of the next extra session, but Joakim Noah was blocked, and the game went to a third overtime.

The Nets were still within three

points with three minutes left before Luol Deng’s basket made it a five-point lead and Nazr Mohammed came up with two baskets in the final 32 seconds to help preserve the win.

Brooklyn’s Deron Williams said the Nets had themselves to blame for not securing a win that would have squared the series.

“We made a lot of mistakes up 14,” Williams said. “We had the missed dunk. Missed free throws. I fouled Nate on the 3. We made a lot of mistakes in the fourth quarter.” The Bulls will try to wrap up the best-of-seven series at Brooklyn on Monday.

Oklahoma City pulled out a vic-tory in its first game since losing All-Star Russell Westbrook to a season-ending injury, beating the Houston Rockets 104-101 to go up 3-0 in the series.

Kevin Durant scored 41 points, including 27 in the first half, and the Thunder led by 26 points be-fore a big third-quarter rally by the Rockets put them within striking distance.

Houston regained the lead with about 4 minutes left, and was up with less than a minute remaining. But Durant hit a 3-pointer a few seconds later to put Oklahoma City on top 100-99.

A turnover by James Harden gave the Thunder the ball back and Derek Fisher made two free throws to push the lead to 3. Harden made a layup, but Reggie Jackson hit two more free throws after that.

Houston had a last chance, but Carlos Delfino’s 3-pointer attempt fell short.

Harden scored 30 points to lead the Rockets in the first playoff game in Houston since 2009. Game 4 is Monday in Houston.

Real’s comeback win meant Barca’s lead was cut to 11 points and they also pulled six points clear of Atletico, who are third and almost assured of a Champions League place for next season. Barca must wait until after their likely elimination from Europe’s elite club competition at home to Bayern Munich on Wednesday for another chance to secure a fourth Spanish crown in five years.

“We are leaving with a bitter taste in our mouths but feeling satisfied with the job done,” Barca forward Alexis Sanchez, who netted his side’s second goal, told reporters. With an eye on the Champions League semi-final second leg, when Barca need to overturn a 4-0 deficit against the Germans, coach Tito Vilanova initially left league top scorer Lionel Messi and playmaker Andres Iniesta on the bench.

Bilbao, without a home win in six La Liga games against Barca, took a surprise 27th-minute lead when Markel Susaeta finished from close range from an Aritz Aduriz cross. Barca huffed and puffed in search of an equaliser but were fortunate not to fall 2-0 behind when Susaeta struck a free kick against the crossbar 10 minutes into the second half.

Only when Argentina forward Messi, who had missed the last three league games with a hamstring strain, came off the bench on the hour did Barca find their cutting edge. The World Player of the Year brilliantly weaved his way through a crowd of defenders to equalise in the 67th minute and Alexis, who had earlier struck a post, made it 2-1 two minutes later from a Messi assist.

Messi’s goal, his 44th in 33 league matches this season, set another record as it took his tally away from home to 24, one more than Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo got last term. The Argentine has also scored at least one goal in his last 20 league appearances while Barca equalled their La Liga record by scoring for the 26th consecutive

away match. They looked to have another three points safely in the

bag before Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera rifled a low shot into the corner of the net after 90 minutes to send the home fans into raptures on a wet and chilly night in the Basque Country.

SLIGHT DEFLECTION

“The Athle t ic s tadium is a very difficult place to play a n d you saw that as we had the match won,” Barca assistant coach Jordi Roura told a news conference. “We are closing in on our goal bit by bit.” Real Madrid, 4-1 down to Borussia Dortmund after Wednesday’s semi-final first leg, also face Champions League elimination but coach Jose Mourinho fielded a second-string side at Atletico.

He was also missing Portuguese compatriot Ron-aldo, Real’s top league scorer with 31 goals, who damaged a thigh muscle at Dortmund.

Atletico, who began the game three points behind Real in third spot and seeking a first win in 22 meet-ings with their city rivals, took the lead in the fourth minute when Colombia striker Radamel Falcao nod-ded his 26th league goal this season. Real were level nine minutes later when Angel Di Maria’s inswinging free kick took a slight deflection off defender Juanfran and flew past keeper Thibaut Courtois into the net.

After Real repelled some intense Atletico pressure, Di Maria struck a 63rd-minute winner after running on to Karim Benzema’s pass and firing a low shot past

LONDON - Liverpool’s season has been

full of contra- d i c -tions but even the most hopeful of sup-porters would never have predicted a 6-0 away win in the first match of top scorer Luis Suarez’s 10-game ban.

Brendan Rodgers’s seventh-placed side have looked a one-man team for much of the campaign, with Suarez on fire with 23 Premier League goals, and the Uruguayan’s absence until Sep-tember for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic threatened to hit them hard.

Instead they ran struggling Newcastle United ragged with an effervescent dis-play of attacking football summed up by the cute flicks and defence-splitting passes of Philippe Coutinho and the drive and confidence of striker Daniel Sturridge.

It is no coincidence that both ar-rived in the January transfer window

when former Swansea City boss Rod-gers was forced on a spending spree after a dour first half of the campaign, characterised by a small squad and

rank inconsistency.When fans and pundits

said Liverpool were too re-l iant on Suarez, no one thought it meant they could

thrive without him.But the fact he was not at

the pinnacle of the attack effec-tively gave the team more freedom as the players constantly switched positions, bamboozling Newcastle’s defence.

“The manager has emphasised we have got to stick together as a team and that is what we have done,” Sturridge told ESPN when asked if the Suarez ban had galvanised them, before ac-knowledging the forward’s absence could boost his own chances. “It is good for myself that I am able to get some games.”

Daniel Agger’s early header, a double from long-time under-achiever Jordan Henderson, Sturridge’s confident brace and Fabio Borini’s first Premier League goal moments after coming off the bench had Newcastle fans dashing for the St James’ Park exits.

ROME - Napoli kept their slim Serie A title hopes alive on Saturday with a 3-0 win at bot-tom side Pescara while Udinese jumped into fifth place thanks to a 1-0 victory at Cagliari. Second-half goals from Gohkan Inler, Goran Pandev and Blerim Dzemaili put Napoli on 69 points, eight behind leaders Juventus who visit local rivals Torino on Sunday.

The victory also sees Napoli move 10 points clear of third-placed AC Milan, who host Europa League-chasing Catania in Sunday’s late game (1845 GMT), and 11 in front of Fiorentina. “It wasn’t an easy game and you could see that in the first half,” forward Pan-dev to Sky Sport Italia. “Often we’ve messed up matches like this in the past, but today it went well.”

Roberto Pereyra’s curling strike after 56 minutes was enough to put Francesco Guido-lin’s Udinese on 54 points, one ahead of Inter Milan who visit relegation-threatened Palermo on Sunday.

Bologna had Alberto Gilardino’s goal to thank for a 1-1 draw at Atalanta in Saturday’s early kick off after he cancelled out Luigi Gior-gi’s 67th minute opener with 14 minutes left.

Cagliari, who had striker Mauricio Pinilla sent off in added time, stay 10th on 42 points, two points and one place above Bologna. Ata-lanta leapfrogged Sampdoria into 14th spot on 39 points, 10 clear of the relegation zone, while Pescara stay bottom on 23 points.

MISSED CHANCESNapoli dominated the opening exchanges

but without striker Edinson Cavani they were initially less than clinical in front of goal, with Miguel Britos and Lorenzo Insigne wasting good chacnes to head their side in front during the first half-hour. Insigne thought he had given the visitors the lead with a powerful finish after Dzemaili’s tackle saw the ball drop to him just inside the area but his effort was ruled out as the Napoli players celebrated.

Pescara, who had to win to have any real-istic chance of Serie A survival, could have taken a shock lead in the 38th minute when Giuseppe Sculli was put through, only for the striker to scoop his shot over the bar. However Inler put Napoli in front 41 seconds after the interval when the ball broke to him and his long-range shot took a huge deflection which helped the ball past already committed Pescara keeper Ivan Pelizzoli.

That slice of luck calmed Napoli’s nerves and, although Sculli forced a decent save from Morgan De Sanctis with a header in the 57th minute, Pandev doubled their lead a minute later. The Macedonian brilliantly controlled a drilled Christian Maggio cross before spinning and calmly stroking the ball home.

Insigne should have scored in the 80th when, after racing clean through on goal, he dragged a poor shot wide but Napoli had their third two minutes later when Dzemaili thumped an unstop-pable drive from distance into the top corner.

RIO DE JANEIRO - Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium, venue for next year’s World Cup final and the spiritual home of Brazilian football, has re-opened with an exhibition match despite not being fully finished.

Only two entrances were complete, some seats still missing and the area around the stadium resembled a building site as the arena was re-inaugurated on Saturday with a match between teams led by former Brazil strikers Ronaldo and Bebeto.

The Maracana is the fourth of the 12 World Cup stadiums to be opened, hav-

ing missed the December deadline set by FIFA by four months. It will also stage matches at the Confederations Cup to be held in Brazil in June.

“Brazil is going to give a big lesson to the world and to those which didn’t think it would be possible to hold this World Cup and Confederations Cup,” Ronaldo told reporters on the touchline during a halftime interval.

“Another stadium has been delivered,” added the 1994 and 2002 World Cup winner, who is on the local organising committee.

“It was a last-minute thing but that’s how it goes. We are happy with the result. The pitch is sensational. The stands are

beautiful, so are the internal facilities, everything is really good.”

President Dilma Rousseff was present in the stands along with sports minister Aldo Rebelo, but left before halftime.

Of the six stadiums to be used for the Confederations Cup, only Fortaleza and Belo Horizonte followed the original schedule and were completed last Decem-ber. Recife is due to be opened on May 14 and Brasilia four days later.

The Maracana was originally built for the 1950 World Cup and only the shell of the original stadium remains. Inside, it has been changed from double-deck to a single tier stadium which designers say gives supporters a better view while ca-

pacity has been reduced to 78,000.

The decisive game at the 1950 World Cup was watched by an estimated crowd of 200,000 while other huge attendances were common in the old days.

Critics are worried that the stadium will lose its popular appeal with higher prices once it re-opens for good.

There have also been protests about plans to demolish the adjoining swimming pool and athletics track to build a shopping centre and car park.

MADRID - Barcelona must wait at least another week to wrap up the La Liga title after conceding a late goal to draw 2-2 at Athletic Bilbao on Saturday before second-placed Real Madrid won 2-1 at city rivals Atletico.

Victory for Barca at the San Mames and defeat for Real in the Madrid derby at the Calderon would have given the leaders an unassailable 16-point advantage with five matches left.

The government will increase the agricultural productivity to stop rely-ing on food imports and to improve the people’s welfare.

aimed to celebrate the 334th anniver-sary of the West Sumatra provincial city of Padang and in observance of 68th Indonesian independence an-niversary, he said.

Bali PostDENPASAR - The Indonesian

(kmb27)

Hope for survivors fades as Bangladesh building toll reaches 363

AP Photo/Petr David Josek

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. violation of building permit (IMB) committed by Hotel Patas on Jalan Sunset road, Kerobokan, provoked strong reaction from the Badung House. The Badung House urged the relevant agencies to tighten controls so that similar incidents would no longer recur.

opment, especially the tourism accommodation.

(kmb25)

DENPASAR - After a lot of discussion and consultation with the General Elec-tions Commission (KPU) Center, Bali Provincial Election Commission finally decided ballots used in the May 15 guber-natorial election has not changed. That means, there is no change in PDI-P logo on the ballot for Puspayoga – Sukrawan (PAS) candidate.
