JERUSALEM – Settler celebrations over the expiry of a constructionban didn’t translate into a burst of building activity in Jewish West Banksettlements on Monday, as Israel, the Palestinians and the U.S. held outfor a compromise that would keep the recently resumed peace talks alive.

no immediate signs constructionwould begin full force on Monday.Oded Revivi, mayor of the Efrat settle-ment, said banks and developers werereluctant to commit to new buildingprojects because they’re afraid con-struction will be stopped again.

Dayan, citing money problemsand developers’ previous commit-ments, predicted that only a few hun-dred homes would be built in the nextfew months. “Nothing spectacular ishappening” on Monday, he said.

An Israeli military ban on Pales-tinians prohibiting them from enter-ing Jewish areas of the West Bankcould also be an impediment tospeedy construction. The ban, im-posed as a security precaution

throughout the weeklong JewishSukkot holiday, prevents Palestinianlaborers who actually build the settle-ments from showing up for work.

Spokesmen for the Palestiniansand the Israeli government had nonew comment on Monday.

The expiry of the Israeli construc-tion restrictions has threatened toscuttle Mideast peace negotiations, just weeks after they were launchedin early September with great fanfareat the White House. U.S.-led effortsto work out a compromise over thepast week failed, though Washingtonreiterated late Sunday its call for con-tinued construction curbs.

“We remain in close touch withboth parties and will be meetingwith them again in the comingdays,” State Department spokesmanP.J. Crowley said. “We remain fo-cused on the goal of advancing ne-gotiations ... and encourage the par-ties to take constructive actions to-ward that goal.”

Temple CeremonyCalendar of Event (Sep 24- Oct 7, 2010)

EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annualCeremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Ba-linese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine whicheach family possesses. Because of this practically every fewdays a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in someVillage in Bali. There are also times when the entire islandcelebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan,Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day,Tumpek Wayang day etc.

JIMBARAN - President SusiloBambang Yudhoyono mentioned JuliaRoberts’ film “East, Pray and Love” topromote Bali Island to participants ofthe 2010 Global Policy Forum beinghere Monday.

Bali was a few months ago the lo-cation of part of the scenario of the film“Eat, Pray, and Love” starring JuliaRoberts, the head of state said in hisaddress opening the Forum.

The film told the story of a womanwho, after a long search, finally foundher love and peace in this beautiful is-land, he said.

Impeded by adverse weather, seaweed farmers sufferBali Post

DENPASAR - Adverse weather condition hitting Bali within the past few months had madehundreds of seaweed farmers on Serangan Beach, South Denpasar, suffer. On account of badweather coupled with heavy rains, they could no more cultivate the seaweed because the salinityof seawater decreased drastically. As consequence, there was no support for the growth of sea-weed. Such extreme weather factor was then exacerbated by oil spills polluting the beach so thesuffering of seaweed farmers was getting more serious.

seaweed. In addition, he also allegedthe contaminated sea water due to re-cent oil spill from the ships had con-tribution as well to damage the growthof seaweed. “It is useless to cultivatethe seaweed by force in this condition.Yield of the harvest was definitely notgood even make us lose,” he said.

The man claiming to have beencultivating seaweed for many yearslost out millions of rupiahs because hecould not work. If this condition con-tinued, he predicted the majority ofseaweed farmers would go bankruptas they had no other sources of income.“Now, we already lose out millions ofrupiahs because we cannot work.Even, we have a heavy burden of hav-ing to meet the needs of families,” hesighed again.

General Secretary of Mekar SariSeaweed Cultivation Group ofSerangan, I Wayan Karma, acknowl-edged the bad weather was indeedpotentially damaging the seaweedgrowth. Nevertheless, he said thatmany factors could cause the damage

to seaweed. According to the resultsof research made by Udayana Univer-sity, the oil content in seawater alsohad contribution to reduce the salinityon Serangan Beach. “In this water, there were many oil spills from shipsso they contaminated the seawater. Some time ago, Udayana Universityhad even suggested farmers to stop theseaweed cultivation for a while be-cause the water condition was less con-ducive to support the activity,” he said.He also added that some 147 seaweedfarmers in Serangan had discontinuedtheir activities.

In every harvest season lasting for45 days, he said, each farmer usu-ally could yield at the average of350-400 kilograms of seaweed. Thismeans, the total yield collected by147 farmers in each season couldrange from 50 tons to 70 tons of sea-weed with a selling price of IDR12,000 per kilogram. “With the con-dition as happens today, the farmersare no longer able to produce sea-weed,” he added. Mystery is unknown to, or atleast, not acknowledged by manyBalinese. No single matter inheaven as well as on earth is in-scrutable. How is this explained? There are three ways to approachreality. The first one is throughsensory perception, the second, isthrough deciphering of signs andsymbols and the third through in-augural manipulation.

Sensory perception is the com-monest approach that everybodyuses. However, this applies tosimple matters only. Future eventsand “wishes of the departed” donot belong to this category. Thoserequire a more sophisticated “ap-paratus”. In the past, the Balinesebelieved that a “balian taksu” (tra-ditional soothsayer) could predictfuture events. Parents who hadjust been blessed with a new-bornbaby could “meluasang anak alit”(inquire about the reincarnate ofthe baby) from him. This practiceis important, as the concernedfamily had to know exactly theirprogenitor’s wishes. If they wereignorant of his or her wishes, troubles and sufferings could bethe aftermath and be the baby andthe family would undergo hard-ship upon hardship, even death.

A “balian taksu”, either male orfemale, might for example answerthe question by saying:“Panglingsir jerone ane telungundang tenenan numitis, madan Ibasur. Tetagiane sarwa poleng, slempot poleng, ngupah wayang”(The great-grandfather who is re-incarnated through this child is IBasur. He wishes for a checkeredoutfit: black headdress, checkeredsarong, checkered sash and ashadow-puppet performance). Ofcourse, the balian taksu’s words

OVERVIEW:This popular snack, in intriguing mixture of sweet, sour

and spicy hot flavors, is prepared at countless warungthroughout Bali.

you can serve it as part of Balinese meal or buffet.

Channels of Inspirationwere subject to suspicion. Whenthis happened, the inquiring par-ents could contradict the balian byreacting thus: “No! We do not havean ancestor named I Basur. You lie!Give us back our offerings.”

In order to perform his or herduty, the balian taksu should be ina state of trance. This entrancedstate results from the inhaling ofincense smoke pengasepan.Maluasang (inquiry) can only becarried out when three types of of-ferings, called canang, daksina andngelap are presented by the con-cerned family. If the family wassatisfied with the result, theywould normally pay a sum ofmoney, called sesari, the amountof which is not fixed. (It has beenreported that in a few cases, somebalian taksu demanded large fixedsum of sesari before theperformance). The normal arrange-ment should be based more on mu-tual understanding and convention, rather than on a tariff created bythe balian.

The balian’s performance is noeasy matter. If he or she was de-tected to be groggy or speaking in-coherently and at random, the“balian” would undoubtedly bedisqualified. The entranced state ofthe balian was supposed to enablehim or her to be “entered” by theinformation he gave, his gait andmanner. To avoid shame, only“balian’s” from distant places wereemployed, although every balianventuring to deceive was fullyaware of running a high risk of los-ing his reputation.

In the case of “meluasang anakgelem” (inquiry about who hascaused a disease), the questioncould be answered this way: Anenyakitin jeegne landung, sai sai

sing mabaju. Bokne uban, sai saimagambahan. The person respon-sible for the disease is tall, oftenbare-chested. The hair is greyishand often loose).

Since meluasang anak gelemwas a delicate matter, which couldcause a fight between any two par-ties concerned, the “balian taksu”was wise enough not to give all thedetails. With respect to “meluasanganak gelem “, the question oftenraised was: “Who talks in media-tion of the balian: a deity or thespirit of the ancestor”? Mostpeople believe that both can serveas informants. (There is a jokeamong modern-day-Balinese thattheir ancestors were as clever anddiplomatic-minded as they them-selves are today, by avoiding tocome right out with the truth. Theirancestor -who might be the“balians” themselves- did not wantto be trapped in a difficult situa-tion).

As a medium a “balian taksu”could also serve as medium in aninquiry about what was required bythe soul of a departed, as accom-paniment for a cremation. The in-quiry could proceed in thesewords: “Most reverent balian, whatare the demands of my uncle whois going to be cremated?” Thebalian may say: “Ane edotangtiang udeng putih, kamben putih, slempot gadang” (dress me in awhite headdress, white sarong andgreen sash).

Today’s more critical or “mod-ern” Balinese mind is sometimesreluctant about this practice. As apopular joke says: “What wouldyou do, if your deceased grandfa-ther asks for a tractor? Are yougoing to comply with his wishes?”(http://www.balibagus.com)

SEOUL - South Korea’s topcarmaker Hyundai Motor confirmedMonday it would bid for a troubledconstruction firm, setting the stagefor a bidding war with its formerparent Hyundai Group.

Hyundai Motor said in a state-ment it would seek a major stake inHyundai Engineering and Construc-tion to strengthen its “future busi-ness opportunities and diversify itsbusiness portfolio”.

The automaker said it would useits own capital to take over thebuilder, adding it would send a let-ter of intent to creditors of HyundaiConstruction later on Monday.

The nine creditors led by the Ko-rea Exchange Bank announced Fri-day they would sell a 34.88 percentstake, potentially worth three billiondollars. A preferred bidder will beannounced in December.

Hyundai Motor said the construc-tion firm would be able to furthercement its global position throughthe automaker’s 8,000 manufactur-ing and sales operations in more than150 countries.

TOKYO - Japan’s Prime Minister Naoto Kan will on Monday order the compilation of a supple-mentary budget of up to 60 billion dollars for fresh stimulus measures to shore up a flaggingeconomy, reports said.

Kan, a fiscal hawk, who focusedhis early agenda on efforts to cutspending and slash Japan’s hugedebt running close to 200 percent ofgross domestic product, may now beforced to reevaluate amid pressurefrom opposition parties.

The yen’s rise to 15-year highsagainst the dollar prompted Tokyo’sfirst currency intervention since2004 to help hamstrung exportersand avoid a drastic slowdown thatcould plunge Japan back into reces-

sion.The government also in Septem-

ber approved a 915 billion yenstimulus package financed by re-serve funds to create around 200,000jobs and lift the country’s GDP byabout 0.3 percent, but that was criti-cized as not being enough.

Data on Monday showed Japan’sexport growth continuing to slowwhile its trade surplus fell for thefirst time in 15 months year on yearas global demand weakened.

N.Zealand central banker warns over China investmentsowned in New Zealand, or not,”Bollard told AFP.

“The story in some commodityareas is that already processing ismoving to China. There are questionsabout how much of that is inevitableand how much isn’t and can be donein New Zealand.

“That also relates to commercialrelationships with China.”

Bollard’s comments came as thegovernment announced new mea-sures giving ministers more discre-tion when assessing foreign owner-ship applications for farms.

Finance Minister Bill English saidthe new rules would allow ministersto consider whether selling a farm toan overseas investor was in the bestinterests of the wider New Zealandeconomy.

“It’s important that we welcomebeneficial foreign investment andrecognise the positive contributionit makes to New Zealand through in-

creased jobs, capital and access toexport markets,” English said in astatement.

“At the same time, the govern-ment recognises there are genuinepublic concerns about aspects ofcertain types of overseas invest-ment.”

Debate about foreign ownershipof New Zealand farms has beensparked by a Hong Kong-listedcompany’s application to buy abankrupt group of dairy farms.

Land Information MinisterMaurice Williamson caused a stormearlier this month when he said op-position to foreign land ownershipwas often more about “racism” thaneconomic concerns.

Key, whose conservative Nationalgovernment has a strong rural con-stituency, dismissed Williamson’s re-marks and reiterated his view thatNew Zealanders risked becoming“tenants in their own land”.

Takefuji, established in 1974, grewquickly to become the nation’s topconsumer finance company.

Its founder, the late Yasuo Takei, was Japan’s top taxpayer in 1993 andthe company boasted group operat-ing profit of 425.4 billion yen andoutstanding loans of 1,766.6 billionyen in the year to March 2002 at itsheight.

But Takei was arrested in 2003 forwiretapping a journalist who wrote anarticle criticising the company’s op-erations and was given a suspendedjail term the following year.

Takefuji saw loan demand fall rap-idly in recent years and the Lehmanshock in 2008 made Takefuji’s fund-raising harder, the Nikkei said.

Japan’s megabanks have recentlypurchased troubled consumer creditfirms but Takefuji remains indepen-dent from them.

The announcement set thestage for a struggle for control of thebuilder between Chung Mong-Koo,chairman of the cash-rich carmaker, and his widowed sister-in-law HyunJeong-Eun, who leads the muchsmaller Hyundai Group.

Hyun’s group expressed regret atHyundai Motor’s bid and said itwould also send a letter of intent tocreditors this week.

The huge Hyundai conglomeratespun off Hyundai Motor and someother businesses in the wake of the1997-98 economic crisis.

Hyundai Engineering and Con-struction came under creditors’ con-trol in 2001 in a bailout package thatincluded a 2.9 trillion won (now 2.5billion dollar) debt-for-equity swap.

The rump of Hyundai Group nowincludes a shipping firm, a brokerage,a tour company that operates projectsin North Korea and an elevator maker.

Last month three of the affiliates— Hyundai Merchant Marine,Hyundai Securities and Hyundai El-evator — each disclosed in public fil-ings that they intend to bid for theconstruction firm.

Analysts say Hyundai Motor, sit-ting on some 4.3 billion dollars incash, is in a far better position to bidthan the indebted Hyundai Group.

The MEAA has called for an interna-tional boycott of “The Hobbit” until pro-ducers agree to meet its demands overunion representation, a move Jackson saidmay drive the project from his homeland.

New Zealand’s mountainous landscapeprovided a stunning backdrop to “The Lordof the Rings”, which helped kickstart a lo-cal film industry Jackson — a NewZealander himself — said was now underthreat. “If ‘The Hobbit’ goes east — eastEurope in fact — look forward to a long, dry, big-budget movie drought in this coun-try,” he said.

LOS ANGELES – Starz may recast the lead role in“Spartacus” after star Andy Whitfield was unexpect-edly forced to quit earlier this month so that he couldresume cancer treatment.

Sources say the cable network has begun talks withcasting directors about possibly finding another actorto take over the show. Though the actor would mostlikely play Spartacus, another, much less likely, pos-sibility involves re-shaping the series around a newcentral character. If no suitablecandidate is found, Starz andproducers may opt to delay orcancel production.

The decision to audition otheractors was made in conjunctionwith Whitfield, who is said tosupport the series’ continuation.

The 36-year-old Welsh nativewas diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma earlier thisyear, forcing Starz to delayshooting the second season ofthe swords-and-sandals saga.Having said in July that he waslooking forward to returning tothe series, his announcement onSeptember 17 that doctors hadadvised an “immediate” resump-tion of “aggressive treatment”for cancer came as a shock.

Khan also starred in “Rang deBasanti” (Colour Me Saffron), abouta British documentary maker whowants to make a film about Indianfreedom fighters, which was India’sentry in 2007 but again did not makethe cut.

Only two other Indian films havebeen shortlisted for the Best ForeignLanguage Film category: directorMehboob Khan’s classic “Mother In-dia” in 1958 and US-based directorMira Nair”s “Salaam Bombay!”(Hello Bombay!) in 1989. Khan hasmade a name for himself as one ofthe Indian film industry’s leading ac-tor-producer-directors, combining off-beat subjects with high-quality pro-duction values and expert marketing.

His previous two leading roles,“Ghajini” and “3 Idiots” both beatbox office records. India’s officialOscar entry in 2009 — a Marathi-language film about the father of In-dian cinema, “Harischandrachi Fac-tory” — failed to make the shortlist.

Cancer-stricken “Spartacus”star may be replaced

searching for some way to have the actor remainedinvolved in the show. Any credit will also ensure thatWhitfield remains an employed member of the pro-duction.

During Whitfield’s first round of cancer treatment,Starz crafted a prequel mini-season that did not re-quire Whitfield until his doctor gave the actor an all-clear. Filming on the prequel is currently underway inNew Zealand, with the second season scheduled tostart production immediately afterward. The networkmust either recast the title role quickly — within the

next eight weeks — or halt pro-duction.

The decision to potentially re-cast, sources say, was not madeeasily. Starz executives, alongwith members of the cast andcrew, have been devastated bythis turn of events and would pre-fer to keep Whitfield in the role.

But there are several financialrealities to be considered, too.“Spartacus” is the network’s firstand only breakout original se-ries. DVD sales on the just-re-leased first season are strong.Additionally, there’s the rest ofthe cast and crew of other“Spartacus” employees awaitingword on whether their jobs willcontinue. Delaying productioncould potentially mean losingkey actors or writers to other op-portunities. The prequel is set toair in January.

WELLINGTON - Filmmaker Peter Jackson threatened on Monday to movethe troubled production of his latest Tolkien saga “The Hobbit” from New Zealandover a dispute with an Australian actors’ union. In an open letter, Jackson said“The Hobbit”, a two-film prequel to the Oscar-winning “Lord of the Rings” tril-ogy, may be moved to eastern Europe if the row with Australia’s Media Entertain-ment and Arts Alliance was not settled.

with attracting overseas movies and theAustralians would like a greater slice ofthe pie, which begins with them using ‘TheHobbit’ to gain control of our film indus-try.”

“The Hobbit” has been stalled by finan-cial woes at movie studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, which is facing a debt of 3.7 bil-lion US dollars and is negotiating a stream-lined bankruptcy with creditors. Mexican-born Guillermo Del Toro quit as directorin May, citing almost two years of delays, with “Lord of the Rings” director Jacksonexpected to replace him at the helm.

Jackson denied being anti-union andsaid he was angry “a tiny minority” of ac-tors could potentially derail a project thatwould create thousands of jobs and injecthundreds of millions of dollars into NewZealand’s economy. The filmmaker said hehad always treated both union and non-union actors fairly on his sets and accused

the MEAA of unfairly singling out “TheHobbit”.

“It sure feels like we are being attackedsimply because we are a big fat juicy tar-get, not for any wrongdoing,” he said. NewZealand Council of Trade Unions presi-dent Helen Kelly said minimum employ-ment standards needed to be met andAustralia’s MEAA was simply assisting itscounterparts in the New Zealand labourmovement achieve the goal.

“It is totally unjustified to describe theunion assistance from Australia as bully-ing,” she said, calling on the film’s pro-ducers to work with unions on conditions,“rather than simply threaten to remove thefilm from New Zealand”.

MEAA assistant federal secretarySimon Whipp told Radio New Zealand theunion was concerned actors involved in“The Hobbit” were not being offered con-tracts which were standard throughout theindustry. Whipp said the MEAA had nointerest in driving work away from NewZealand and wanted to work with themovie’s producers.

Actor Ian McKellen, who is likely toreprise his role as the wizard Gandalf, re-portedly told a British newspaper thismonth that back-to-back shooting of thetwo movies was set to begin in January.

MONACO - Luxury yachts that whisk their millionaire owners or char-ter guests to the world’s top beauty spots, guzzling gallons of fuel on theway, have long scraped the bottom of the green league tables. But assuperyachts converged on the Riviera for this year’s 20th Monaco YachtShow, a small but determined minority were flying the green flag as theever expanding fleet of mega yachts seeks to reduce its carbon footprint.

newly-launched sea-giant — Exuma— had its green ambitions on full dis-play.

The first of a new series ofVitruvius motor yachts built by Italy’sPichiotti and Perini Navi, Exuma wasdesigned by Philippe Briand, famousfor his cutting-edge sailing yachts. The spectacular 50-metre vessel, which can accommodate 10 guestsand eight crew, boasts an unusual alu-minium hull, whose lighter weight isdesigned to slash fuel consumption, explained the boat’s captain, AdolfoOria.

“The design of the yacht, whichis narrower and sleeker than mostmotor yachts, has the same perfor-mance efficiency of sail boats,” hesaid.

Exuma’s innovation won it theshow’s Green Plus Yacht Award2010, which was presented Friday byeco-campaigner Prince Albert to itsMonaco-resident owner. Short of adesign revolution, one of the easiestways for the green-minded million-aire to reduce his yacht’s carbon foot-print today is to sign up to a yachtcarbon offset scheme.

“Interest (in carbon offsetting) is

growing all the time,” according toMark Robinson, managing directorof a service called Yacht CarbonOffset, whose list of clients from theMiddle East, Russia and Europereaches into three figures.

The principle of offsetting isstraightforward: a yacht’s green-house gas emissions are quantifiedand then balanced by equivalent

emissions reductions from carefully-se-lected green energy projects around theworld. Yachts using the service includeLionheart, Candyscape II and RoMa aswell as the recently-launched 57.7-metresailing ketch Twizzle, whose owner alsochose to offset the carbon footprint fromthe energy and main materials used inthe boat’s construction.

Until now, yachting lagged behind

other sectors in terms of environmentalawareness, for two reasons, accordingto Khaldoun. First, the industry is deeplyconservative and often slow to adoptnew trends. Second — and most impor-tantly — research and developmentcosts are enormous in this highly spe-cialist sector where yacht builders of-ten lack the budgets needed for suchprojects.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side made a fly-ing start to their domestic and Euro-pean campaigns, but the Blues seemto have lost some of their sparkle inthe last week as a surprise LeagueCup exit against Newcastle was fol-lowed by Saturday’s 1-0 loss atManchester City.

That defeat at Eastlands endedChelsea’s 100 percent start to theirdefence of the Premier League title, but France winger Malouda is con-fident there is no chance of the los-ing run extending to a third match.Ever since Roman Abramovichmade success in Europe his primarygoal after buying Chelsea in 2003,the west London outfit have beenengaged in a so-far fruitless searchfor the Russian billionaire’s holygrail.

A 2008 final defeat to Manches-ter United and several semi-finallosses still rankle with many at Stam-ford Bridge and players and ownerare united in their desire to finallywin Europe’s elite club competitionthis time. “It’s a big target for thisclub to win the European Cup,”Malouda said. “Coming so close hasbeen frustrating and we really do feelthis is the year we can win it.”

LONDON - Florent Malouda expects the lure of Champions League glory to help Chelsearediscover their winning touch in Tuesday’s clash with French champions Marseille.

cope with the demands of challengingfor the Champions League, whileAncelotti’s experiences at AC Milan, where he won the trophy twice, are alsoa significant plus. “The manager canput one team out on a Saturday andanother out in the week. They wouldboth be world class,” Malouda said.

“I think our manager is one of themost proven managers there is. Ev-ery single player at the club is hav-ing a lot of fun playing under himand he wants the Champions Leagueas much as us. This can be the sea-son for us.”

While Chelsea are favourites tobeat Marseille at Stamford Bridge intheir second group stage match,Malouda is well aware that DidierDeschamps’ team are capable ofcausing a shock.

Deschamps, who spent the1999-2000 season as a player atChelsea, led Marseille to their firstFrench title for 18 years and theclub’s supporters are hopeful ofemulating the success of Lyon andBordeaux, who both reached theChampions League quarter-finalslast season. With that in mindMalouda may be right to warn histeam-mates not to underestimateMarseille.

“Marseille will be a difficult one

because if you look at the recentyears the French teams have donewell in the Champions League,”Malouda said. “Last year they hadtwo teams in the last eight. It is bigfor Marseille, they were champi-ons last year and were waiting along time, so they will want a goodstart.

“They won’t want to come toStamford Bridge and lose 4-0 likeBordeaux did two years ago. I cantell you it will be difficult in bothgames. Over there it is a big atmo-sphere but we are used to that.”

Meanwhile, Deschamps, 41,added: “Returning to StamfordBridge will give me great pleasure.Although the stadium itself is reno-vated and much bigger, the won-derful ambience which I experi-enced remains. “Chelsea have avery competitive European teamwith something like 20internationals - a great compensa-tion if you have injured or sus-pended players.

“Not only do Chelsea want towin this trophy, they are amongfour or five teams which can legiti-mately expect to do so. “They wonthe Premier League title last sea-son and are already performing re-ally well.”

“It is not normal to need so manyopportunities. If you score two or threefrom six chances fine. At the back Real have no such prob-lems, conceding just one league goal, and Mourinho hopes it is a question oftime before things click at the other endof the pitch.

“We are controlling all the gamesand there is nothing that needs solvingtactically,” added the former Chelseacoach. “It is certainly not to do with thequality of the players. We all know thatthese are players with high goal talliesfor a number of seasons.

“My opponent played really asolid match. I didn’t feel comfort-able throughout the match.Rhythm wasn’t there and Icouldn’t take an advantage. Shedid a good job,” said Sharapova.“Her style of play is quite differ-ent. Her strokes are pretty fast, shestays inside the baseline and takesthe ball early, so the style is dif-ferent from the majority on thetour.

EAST RUTHERFORD,N.J. – The only thing standingin the way of Carmelo Anthonybecoming a member of theNew Jersey Nets is the DenverNuggets.

A person close to the tradetalks told The Associated Presson Sunday that the Nets arewaiting for the Nuggets to signoff on a three-team deal thatwould bring Anthony to NewJersey. The person spoke oncondition of anonymity be-cause the negotiations wereongoing.

“I would say that we’re ex-ploring everything,” King saidSunday. “But there’s no deal.We have nothing. We havenothing. We’re excited aboutthe guys playing. I’ll continueto explore and see if we canmake the team better. At thispoint I’m excited about watch-ing our guys practice.

NEW DELHI - Snake catchers inNew Delhi said Monday they had re-moved an adult cobra from the newlybuilt tennis centre that will be used nextweek for the Commonwealth Games.“We were requested by the Games au-thorities to help them rescue a snakespotted in the R.K. Khanna tennis sta-dium,” Kartick Satyanarayan, head ofanimal conservation group WildlifeSOS India, told AFP.

“We caught the snake and we re-moved it from the premises.” On Sun-day, South African High CommissionerHarris Mbulelo Mejeke also com-plained about a snake found in one ofthe rooms of his country’s athletes inthe Games village.

“If snakes are found we can’t askour teams to stay there,” Mejeke toldreporters before entering the village.“That was a threat to the lives of ourathletes. Very disappointing,” he added.

The Games are mired in a range ofproblems from unfinished athletes’ ac-commodation to security fears, an out-break of mosquito-borne dengue feverand doubts about public safety after thecollapse of a new footbridge last week.Snakes and particularly the King Co-bra are venerated in India as religioussymbols worn by Lord Shiva, the godof destruction.

India has 238 species of the reptile,of which 50 are poisonous. Delhi au-

Nets GM King still waiting to make ‘Melo dealKing admitted there was a

sense of frustration in trying tomake a big deal happen. “It’s aprocess,” he said. “Anytime Imade a trade it’s a process. Some of them take two years toget to the point when you getthe player you want. Some taketwo weeks. I think you’ve gotto make sure you do it and do itthe right way.”

The person who spoke to TheAP indicated New Jersey wouldship Derrick Favors, the No. 3pick overall in the draft, and atleast one first-round pick to theNuggets for Anthony. New Jer-sey would also send point guardDevin Harris to Charlotte. Therewere other pieces to the trade thatthe person wouldn’t discuss.

Anthony averaged 28.2points, 6.6 rebounds and 3.2assists last season in leading theNuggets (53-29) to their secondstraight Northwest Divisiontitle. The 26-year-old three-timeAll-Star had 30.7 points and 8.5rebounds a game in the open-ing round of the playoffs but itwas not good enough to preventDenver from being eliminatedby Utah in six games. The thirdoverall pick in the 2003 draft,Anthony has career averages of24.5 points and 7.1 rebounds.Anthony has only played 69 orless games in three of the lastfour seasons, with his low of 66coming in 2008-09.

But although Ferrari is refusingto get too carried away with its re-sults - especially because the points’standings are still very close -Stefano Domenicali thinks it vital hisoutfit does not let it guard down justnow. “This is the crucial moment ofthe season,” said Domenicali. “Weneed to stay very cool and look for-ward to arriving in Japan with theperfect package in terms of car, interms of preparation of the drivers, and also for the team because if youmake a mistake you pay a lot.”

Alonso’s pace over the Singaporeweekend suggests that Ferrari hasmade a good step forward with itscar in recent weeks – but FelipeMassa’s gearbox gremlin that struckin qualifying has highlighted thatthere remain weaknesses in theteam’s overall package.

“For sure, it’s important for us towork very hard on reliability becauseas a team we paid a big price thisweekend,” explained Domenicaliabout the efforts that need to go onnow. “The car seems to be better interms of general performance, alsoon this kind of track.

“We can get heated about blamebut I think Mark has got to race aswell, but the important thing frommy perspective was that from Lewisit was not a desperate overtaking, itwas a solid overtaking manoeuvre. When ever you overtake in any form

of motor racing there is a degree ofrisk and he was unlucky that it didnot come off this time.”

He added: “I don’t believe Lewisdid anything wrong. I am not tryingto get into the blame game but I thinkhe made a good overtaking manoeu-vre. Singapore - Ferrari believes it is now entering a ‘crucial’ mo-ment of the season as it bids to follow Fernando Alonso’s back-to-back victories with title success at the end of the year. TheMaranello-based team is currently in its peak form of the cam-paign, with Alonso having delivered a brilliant victory in the streetsof Singapore following his success in Italy a fortnight ago.

nothing major, but I think now a lotwill be in the head of the drivers, inthe head of the people who have towork, and in the reliability otherthan an incredible performance.“We know that all the teams now arein a period where they have toswitch to put all their resources inthe new car otherwise they will bevery late at the end, so I think it willbe an interesting end to the season.”

Domenicali believes thatFerrari’s calm approach to the cam-paign – even when its title ambitionsappeared to be derailing – must bemaintained even though its fortuneshave improved dramatically. “I’mnever down when things are bad, orI never declare it fantastic whenthings are going well,” he contin-ued. “What I know is that we needto be cool, feet on the ground and towork hard.

“We know when we’ve madesome mistakes, when some othershave been better than us, but that’spart of the game, part of life. “Themost important thing is to have aclear focus in front of you, to try tonever give up, and that’s what weare doing.”
