Denpasar (Bali Post)—Though dengue fever cases currently do not

show significant increase, the erratic weather condition like today should be alerted by people. Rainfall at the beginning of dry season causes the disease vector namely Aedes aigypti mosquito to have greater potential to proliferate.

The Head of Denpasar Health Agency, Luh Putu Sri Armini, explained the increase of den-gue fever cases was predicted to occur in June. By all means, it should be alerted considering the densely populated area of Denpasar City had a great potential for the proliferation of dengue fever vector.

To anticipate the issue, the Health Agency took preventive measures such as mosquito spraying by means of three vehicles. The spray-ing was conducted on May 21 to June 10 in all the subdistricts in Denpasar.

Armini expected the spraying action could suppress the vector of dengue fever transmis-sion so that the increase in the cases could be

prevented or minimized. Though the Denpasar Health Agency conducted the spraying, it did not necessarily mean if people stood idle. According to Armini, a major step in combating the dengue fever was the eradication of Aedes aegypty mosquito larvae. “So, people are expected to pay attention to the surrounding environment so that there is no stagnant water and they maintain the healthy environment,” she said.

As had been known, the mosquito larvae loved to breed in a pool of water, so that it was important to bury, drain and cover the media of mosquito proliferation. Armini further added that public could also take action by spraying anti-mosquito repellents.

Apart from roving vehicle, the Denpasar Health Agency also attached stickers on houses that contained instructions for vigilance against dengue fever and suggested people to immedi-ately go to nearest community health center if they got symptoms such as dengue fever, body aches, dizziness and nausea. The Head of Bali Education Agency, AA Gede Ngurah Sujaya, said the graduation rate of high school students (SMA/MA) was pretty good. Only 13 high school students in Bali did not pass the exam and they mostly (6 students) were in Buleleng, while the non-passing stu-dent of vocational school came to 3 people. The achievement was better than ever before where the non-passing high school student in 2012 amounted to 26 people and 11 students of vocational school.

“With a 20-package national exam paper, the graduation rate of high school reached 99.95 percent and 99.99 percent for vocational school. It was a great achievement amidst the chaotic implementation of national exam this year. Chaotic national exam had no effect because there had been prior notice and the students were ready for it,” said Sujaya in the press room of Bali Government, Thursday (May 23).

Further, Sujaya added the achievement of student passing rate this time indicated if the students in Bali were motivated to follow the exam. Since the national exam was an annual agenda, the students assumed it not a horrific thing. However, Sujaya said the existence of failed students in the exam would become a re-cord and evaluation for the education in Bali.

“Necessarily, the students in Bali could pass 100 percent. To that end, we will make a more

optimal tryout next year. Similarly, we will also evaluate the students, school principal, teachers and the institutions. Therefore, we can see the deficiencies,” he said. According to Sujaya, the key points to success were determined by teachers being ready to teach, good input (the students) and supporting infrastructure.

When asked about the rank of Bali in nation-al level, Sujaya said his party had not received the result. “Nationally, the achievement of Bali in the national exam cannot be mapped out because we just received the results. However, we are optimistic to achieve again the national first rank like last year,” he said.

Sujaya added the non-passing students remained to face problem on mathematics. “In social sciences program, mathematics remains to become an obstacle, while the obstacles in natural sciences program are physics and chem-istry. Overall, mathematics remains a killing machine,” he said.

Regarding the graduation announcement at each school on Friday, Sujaya appealed in order the graduation announcement was made online via Internet to avoid undesirable things such as excessive euphoria of students, graffiti against their uniforms and convoy on the streets. “We urge schools to announce the graduation via the Internet or it can be filled with saying prayers en masse,” he concluded. Denpasar (Bali Post)—One more patient suspected of having rabies

was referred to Sanglah Hospital on Saturday (May 25). The patient was sent from Wangaya Hospital.

The Head of Bali Health Agency, Ketut Su-arjaya, when contacted on Saturday explained that he could not ascertain if the patient was infected by rabies virus. “Patient came to Wangaya Hospital with symptom of menin-goencephalitis,” said Suarjaya.

Meningoencephalitis was an infection of the brain, denoting one of the rabies symptoms. According to Suarjaya, the patient was not as-certained as a rabies suspect because the history of dog bite had not been known. “Anamnesa of being bitten is denied. So, the patient cannot be ascertained to be rabies and it tends to brain infection,” said Suarjaya.

He continued that symptoms of rabies other

than brain infection were the emergence of phobia to light, sound and water. Besides, the patient also indicated excessive salivation and seizures symptom.

Though it was not certain to suffer from rabies, according to Suarjaya, it was still re-ferred to Sanglah Hospital to get more intensive care while waiting for the outcome of further examination. Secretary of Rabies Treatment of Sanglah Hospital, Ken Wirasandhi, revealed similar opinion. He confirmed if there was a patient referred to Sanglah Hospital from Wan-gaya Hospital with rabies suspect. However, Ken could not state if the allegation was leading to rabies or just brain infection.

The patient from Padang Sambian, Den-pasar, arrived at Sanglah Hospital around 5:00 p.m. Until last Saturday, it was still under observation at Nusa Indah Room of Sanglah Hospital. (san)

Implementation of the national exam this year is the most chaotic along the history of national exam. Bali Post

BADUNG - Life of traditional fisher-men on coastal territories of Bali stays far from prosperous condition. This situation is affected by carrying capacity and fish resource increasingly diminishes. Besides, the traditional fishermen still using tradi-tional tools in their daily activities are now faced with the presence of capital-intensive fishermen supported with more complete and modern tools.

One of the fishermen on Jimbaran Beach, Made Patok, 61, revealed the life of tra-ditional fishermen in Bali was no longer prosperous as the life of fishermen in the past. It happened because of declining fish catch among traditional fishermen due to diminishing fish resources in the seas and competition against capital-intensive fish-ermen. Even, said Patok, fishing vessels from outside Bali also caught fish in the waters around Bali. As a result, condition of small fishermen seemed to be progressively marginalized and hard to get fish. With the presence of large fishing vessels from outside Bali, the small traditional fishermen felt to be harmed.

“Sometimes, we were also harmed and our fish nets amidst the sea were hit by large vessels to tear. Besides, we finally also scrambled to catch fish,” he said. As-sociated with it, so far he was still confused

which parties that should address such a problem.

At the moment, he could only bring home fish catch of about 3-10 kg. Common fish he usually acquired were like tuna, climbing perch, cob, belt fish and lobster. Even, if the weather condition did not allow him to go to sea, he often returned home with empty hand. “Once upon a time, I’ve got absolutely 2 fish. It was the suffering of small fishermen,” he said.

He added that such situation was very different from their fishing life in the past. He had been fishing since his childhood. At that time, he did not need to go to sea to distant waters because Jimbaran waters near the beach retained abundant fish. “Fish flood used to reach this place, so that we did not need to sail away into the sea. It’s absolutely different from the current condition. Today, the amount of fish has diminished,” he said.

This grandfather of six grandchildren usually went to sea about 5:00 a.m. until midnight by using traditional boat and simple fishing tools. The furthest distance to be covered with his boat was to the waters of Kuta and Seseh. His fish catch was normally sold at Kedonganan Market as the largest fish market in Badung County. All this time, the results of his fishing were used to sup-port his wife and send his three children to school, though he could only afford up to

high school.Another traditional fisherman, Made

Ukir, 45, was pessimistic as there would be no regeneration of fisherman like him. He said it happened because the income of traditional fishermen seemed erratic which indirectly affected young people today not to consider the profession. This man said if both of his sons were not interested to continue his profession as fisherman. “Both of my sons do not want to become a fisherman. If they go to sea, it is just for leisure,” he said. This native fisherman to Jimbaran added that his two sons would prefer to work as café waiter because they could earn a certain fixed income compared to be a fisherman.

Likewise, he also added the life condi-tion of traditional fishermen with uncertain income caused the number of traditional fishermen in the region diminished and switched to other professions such as being a café waiter as well as other job in tourism field. Not a little, a fisherman that formerly utilized boat to catch fish then shifted to transport foreign tourists.

Despite facing such condition, tradi-tional fishermen of Jimbaran did not have a slight intention to leave the profession. What they needed was intensive coaching from the government and capital business assistance to develop the fishing so that the life of traditional fisherman in Bali could be improved to reach their prosperity. “Price hike of fuel will automatically have an impact on the tariff increase of tour-ist transport. However, the Pawiba’s tariff increase percentage will not be exactly the same as the increase percentage in fuel price,” said Chairman of Pawiba, Bagus Soediana, in Denpasar.

According to him, Pawiba was still waiting for the price hike of spare parts due to rising fuel price to determine the transportation tar-iff surge. Adjustment to transportation tariff could only be made one week after the fuel price hike was approved.

“We’ll wait for the price hike of tire, fuel and other spare parts before raising the tariff. At the moment, we have not dared to set tariff because we do not know about the side impact. Probably, we can make decision a week after the raise,” he said.

Aside from having an impact on transpor-tation tariff, Bagus Sudiana estimated it would also affected the increase in the price of new tourist vehicle. The increase of vehicle price would affect the cost calculation of vehicle upgrade by the circle of tourist transportation entrepreneurs.

“Pawiba must calculate the fuel price hike to tourist transport tariff. Obviously, the tariff of Pawiba will be reviewed and adjusted to the fuel price hike. Indeed, it will have implica-tion to travel agencies as the users of transport services,” he said.

The fuel price hike had also begun to bother people because it was worried to kindle the price hike of the basic necessities so that it aggravated small people. “The fuel price hike will aggravate the situation. The government must pay attention to the fate of poor people,” complained one of the noodle traders around Renon.

Similar opinion was revealed by Raka, an-other resident, where the fuel price hike would affect the price hike of nine basic groceries. “If possible, the fuel price should not be raised because the price of all goods will also rise, including groceries. But, my salary never goes up,” he said. Meanwhile, an economist, Prof. Dr. Gede Sri Darma, DBA, stated the price hike of subsidized fuel was clearly a blow to people. This policy would also lead to higher inequality because the fuel price hike amidst the uneven welfare would burden Indonesian people, especially the poor people because of high living cost.

“The price hike of subsidized fuel will also significantly influence the lifestyle and fulfillment pattern to basic needs of Indone-sian people. It happens because the increase is not followed by the increase in welfare or income,” he explained. (kmb27)

Responding to fuel price hike, Pawiba raises tariffBali Post

DENPASAR - The increase in sell-ing price of subsidized fuel with the estimation plan of Premium gasoline at IDR 2,000 and diesel fuel at IDR 1,000 as of June was addressed by Bali Tourist Transport Association (Pawiba). It hinted an increase rate of 10 to 15 percent adjusted to the price hike of spare parts.

Denpasar (Bali Post)—

Political situation on the day be-fore the vote recapitulation plenary of Bali gubernatorial election and the winner plenary determination planned on Sunday increasingly heated. Various protests were rolled over by community components against the process and mechanism for administering the Bali guberna-torial election. Hundreds of people coalesced into the Bali Integrity, rooters and supporters of AA Ngu-rah Puspayoga-Dewa Nyoman Sukrawan (PAS) candidate held a rally to the office of Bali House, Saturday (May 25).

Hundreds of masses walked from the office of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) Bali. Arriving at the Bali House hall they directly yelled the demand to the Bali Electoral Commission (KPUD). In addition, they also gave speeches and spread banner. The masses were guarded by police authority and received by legislators of the Bali House.

In the action on Saturday, they demanded that Bali Electoral Com-mission should be summoned to clarify the insistence on refusal to the request of PAS witness to re-calculate the gubernatorial election vote in the plenary at the county/municipality electoral commission some time ago. “We have the Bali Electoral Commission summoned and ask to hear the aspiration of Balinese people,” said Mardika.

From the results of calculation made by the PDI-P based on C-1 form, they believed if PAS excelled. “The Bali Electoral Commission should be summoned right now. Our district/municipality recapitu-lation is not treated fairly so that we demand for opening the C-1 form,” said the action coordinator doubling as Chairman of the Bali Integrity, Nyoman Mardika. In his speech, Mardika said if only the Bali Elec-toral Commission followed up the objection of PAS, it was believed that PAS came out as the winner in the Bali gubernatorial election. However, the county/municipal Electoral Commission across Bali was reluctant to follow up the request of PAS witness. “At the county/municipal plenary, the Elec-toral Commission was reluctant to open up the C-1 form, even though it has been stipulated in article 25, paragraph 6 of the Electoral Com-mission Regulation No.16/2010 on the Procedures of Vote Counting. We ask for a recount,” he said.

Mardika proceed, the Bali Elec-toral Commission had not been independent. On the other hand, the Bali Election Supervisory Com-mittee (Panwaslu) took side to the other candidate. As evidence, the

alleged violation made by the other candidate was not investigated. He also requested police authority not to show off excessive force with full weaponry that made people afraid. “Moreover, it also deployed bomb squad vehicle. We are not terrorists, while the PAS witnesses were in-timidated in such a way,” he said.

On that occasion, it was also read the statement by representative of the mass namely AA Ayu Triyana. Firstly, the Bali Integrity urged the Bali Elec-toral Commission to openly receive the PAS witness in accordance with the provisions of article 25 paragraph 5 of the Electoral Commission Regu-lation No.16/2010. Secondly, it urged the Election Supervisory Committee to be independent in every electoral stage of the Bali governor and deputy governor. Thirdly, it urged police authority to refrain from excessive acts resulting in fear and tense atmo-sphere in the community with the deployment of armed forces in the county/municipal and Bali Electoral Commission.

Meanwhile, a legislator of the Bali House, Made Suparta, ex-plained if his party had observed a number of frauds in the guber-natorial election. “We hear all the people’s aspiration and substance. Besides, we also get a lot of reports on the allegation of violations in the process of preparing the campaign period, voting and vote count at polling stations to plenary reca-pitulation at the county/municipal Electoral Commission. And we

agree to secure the people’s vote,” said Suparta.

The member of Commission I of the Bali House added if his party had formally invited the Bali Electoral Commission. They were ready to attend the invitation of Commission I of the Bali House. But a few hours before the meeting, they abruptly can-celed. “We’ve summoned the ranks of Bali Electoral Commission with an official letter as the standard mecha-nism and procedure. Similarly, we’ve also made verbal communication. They expressed their readiness to come, but a few hours ago the House received a letter if the Electoral Com-mission and its commissioner ranks were not ready to come. We’ve sent a letter but it was ignored whereas we would like to communicate to the Electoral Commission pursuant to article 67 of Law No. 32/2004 on regional administration where even though without being invited the Electoral Commission would come to explain the implementation of gubernatorial election. Though being invited, out invitation was neglected,” said the politician from Tabanan.

He added the Electoral Commis-sion working with public money should absorb the people’s aspira-tions. “We will take concrete steps to safeguard the people’s vote. We will come to the office of the Elec-toral Commission. If people want to watch and escort, we welcome them. But, never make any actions against the law. Do it peacefully,” said Supartha.

On hearing the promise of the leg-islator, the mass began to calm down and dismiss. Then, they returned to the office of PDI-P, while some of the mass escorted the legislator to the office of Bali House. As an effort to safeguard the people’s aspiration and to pacify the masses, legislators of the Bali House immediately went to the office of Bali House. They included Chairman of Commission III of Bali House IGN Suryanta Putra, Chair-man of PDI-P Bali Faction Ketut Tama Tenaya and Gede Suamba, Made Budastra, Made Arjaya, Nyo-man Laka, Gusti Putu Budiartha and IB Ketut Birawa. Meanwhile, the office of Bali Electoral Commission was heavily guarded from the morn-ing by hundreds of military and police personnel such as armed Brigade Mo-bile and police armed with tear gas. The authority also alerted barracuda armored vehicle, water cannon and bomb squad vehicle.

Police authority only allowed the legislators of the Bali House to come in, while the masses were hampered at the entrance gates to the office of the Bali Electoral Commission. Af-ter the speech, the masses dismissed themselves and returned to the office of PDI-P Bali. The arrival of legisla-tors escorting the people’s aspira-tions was only received by a member of the Bali Electoral Commission, Dewa Kadek Raka Wiarsa Sandi and the Secretary Arya Gunawan. Raka Sandi affirmed that Bali Electoral Commission and county/municipal Electoral Commission had under-

taken the process of Bali gubernato-rial election in appropriate with the mechanisms and rules. He appreci-ated the inputs of the legislator and community expectation. However, he admitted that he could not make any decision because any decision of the Electoral Commission should be made through plenary meeting with all the commissioners.

“I just explained all the steps hav-ing been executed by the Electoral Commission in appropriate with the mechanisms and procedures. Regarding the vote re-count and re-election needs no explanation. Simply see tomorrow (Sunday—Ed) on the recapitulation plenary meeting of the Bali gubernatorial election at the Bali Electoral Com-mission,” he said.

He added the Electoral Commis-sion as an independent and hierar-chical institution had also submitted all the stages and processes of the Bali gubernatorial election to cen-tral Electoral Commission. “We have coordinated with the leader-ship of the House. Similarly, we’ve set the period of recapitulation at provincial level on May 25-27. We do not do it on May 25 because it is Vesak Day. Then, why we do not do it on May 27 because the regulation mandates that 3 days after the bal-lot box submitted there should be a recapitulation of vote count in the province and determination of the winner of the gubernatorial elec-tion. Finally, we do the process on May 26,” he explained. (kmb29)

Telkomsel’s big dream to make Bali a Broadband Island already started about 4 years ago. At that time, the use of data services was not as high as today. Users of smartphones are still relatively few. However, Telkomsel together with its parent company, Telkom, continue to work to realize the dream.

In order to hold the maximum data services throughout Bali, Telkomsel join hand with Telkom realizing it starting from schools and campuses. Until now around 50 campuses in

Bali already installed with WiFi ac-cess. Meanwhile around 125 schools equipped with WiFi Indonesia Digital School (Indischool). Not only that, Telkomsel also deployed the WiFi access throughout public areas.

According to I Made Sarjana, lecturer from Stikom Bali, Telkomsel reason on penetrate through schools, are make sense because youth con-sider to be an early adaptor and able to absorb technology much faster than old generation. By deploying data service in schools and campuses, Telkomsel able to capture potential market and help young generation accessing information technology and knowledge.

He reasoned by deploying data service access in campuses and schools, students can improve their quality of learning. Base on Stikom experience, data service that provide by Telkomsel able to increase teach-ing and learning quality.

Besides, according to Cisco study released in February 2013, data ser-vice will be growing rapidly through years from now. WiFi is becoming

one of key factor that support this trend.

WiFi is increasingly emerging as a feature on smartphones and tablets. WiFi will account for more than half of all Internet traffic by 2016, and cellular data will grow by leaps and bounds to take a 10 percent share, according to Cisco.

Cisco on the latest version of its Visual Networking Index, which measures global Internet usage and predicts future trends said that in 2011, WiFi accounted for 40 percent of all traffic, while cellular data accounted for 2 percent, with the remainder com-ing from traditional fixed traffic (from dial-up to broadband). By 2016, WiFi will account for 51 percent of all traffic and cellular will quintuple, moving up to 10 percent.

All types of traffic are growing, with a fourfold increase expected be-tween 2011 and 2016. 30.7 exabytes of data crossed IP-based networks per month in 2011. That number hit 44 exabytes per month this year and will keep rising to 110 exabytes per month by 2016, Cisco said. Technology pre-

dictions are often wrong, but Cisco said its track record is pretty good. In 2007 Cisco predicted IP traffic would reach 28.4 exabytes per month by 2011, and the actual number turned out to be slightly higher.

Some other trends: Cisco expects average fixed broadband speeds to increase from 9Mbps in 2011 to 34Mbps per second in 2016; 45 per-cent of the world’s population will be online by 2016, totaling 3.4 billion In-ternet users; and network-connected devices will nearly double from 10.3 billion in 2011 to 18.9 billion in 2016. Traffic measured by exabytes is growing fastest in the Middle East and Africa (and slowest in North America), but Asia/Pacific countries are producing the most Internet traffic worldwide.

Video is the biggest factor driving increasing amounts of data moving over IP-based networks. With more and more mobile connections, cel-lular networks will have to meet the challenge with 4G and LTE tech-nologies. “We do actually see mobile traffic and mobile network speeds

growing faster than fixed network speeds,” said Cisco communications manager Thomas Barnett. But of course, he said, cellular networks are “starting at a lower base.”

Lots of applications are driving this growth, but most notable is video. Video surpassed peer-to-peer file sharing as the largest type of Internet traffic in 2010. It’s expected to account for more than 50 percent of consumer Internet traffic by sometime this year. By 2015, on-demand video traffic will be the equivalent of three billion DVDs per month, and one million minutes worth of video will cross global IP networks every second.

In other word, Telkomsel step to make Bali as a Broadband Island is the right one if looking at the trend. Data that provide by Telkomsel shows that in 2012, broadband cus-tomers increase 77 percent compare to the previous year. If looking at the traffic, the growth stimulates around 84 percent of data service usage comparing with the traffic on 2011, which is 1,557 gigabyte per day to 2,868 gigabyte per day. (end)

The Head of Singaraja Im-migration Office, Filianto Akbar, when asked for his confirmation on Thursday (May 23) said his party had forcibly repatriated ten foreign workers to China.

He said those foreign workers were repatriated last Wednesday (May 22). Previously, a team of the Singaraja Immigration Office conducted an examination to docu-ment of the workers at the Celukan Bawang power plant. From the examination, the ten workers were found to have no document as for-eign worker, so that the team asked the workers to leave Indonesia. “We found they only had regular travel document and were not equipped with a working document, so that we declared them to have violated and we have repatriated them,” he said.

According to Akbar, the investor employed many foreign workers

since the power plant mega proj-ect started. Even, their number surpassed the domestic workers. Responding to this condition, his party made a monitoring and in-spection against the documents of those foreign workers. Supervision was done because it was suspected if the mobility of foreign workers coming into the area was quite high. “We’ll keep an eye on be-cause the turnover of foreign work-ers at the power plant was high. We will impose strict sanction if any of them do not bring along complete documents,” he explained.

For information, earlier the Singa-raja Immigration Office had repatri-ated 12 foreign workers also working at the Celukan Bawang power plant mega project. Those foreign workers were repatriated because they were unable to show off their documents as foreign workers. (kmb)

SINGARAJA - Boat and yacht quay on Lovina Beach previously complained to be too short has now been ready to be extended by the Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency. Nevertheless, before preparing the budget for the extension, the quay will be tested first in the implementation of the Sail Indonesia 2013.

The Head of Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency, Jro Ketut Warkadea, said the quay would be tested in the Sail Indonesia event later this year. At that time, hundreds of yachts would berth in on the jetty of Lovina. If later on the quay was considered to need extension, his party would be ready to submit the budget for the quay extension. “We do not know for sure whether the

yachts will berth there. Let’s see,” he said.According to Warkadea, the length of the quay reached

27 meters and at a glance the length really looked inad-equate. Nevertheless, the quay could have been utilized. Previously, travelers had to open their shoes while riding a boat and risk of being wet, but today they were enough to come aboard through the quay. If needed an extension later on, the agency claimed to be ready to propose an aid to Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy for the quay extension. The plan would be submitted through the tourism development grants. “Central government is still able to help us,” he said. Previously, the quay develop-ment on Lovina Beach was intended for berthing location of yachts that frequently dropped in every organization of the Sail Indonesia. (kmb15)

As in past years, Vienna’s city hall and the huge square in front of it was transformed into a magi-cal stage, this year with the theme being “Tales of 1,001 Nights.”

Turbaned genies jostled sensu-ous harem queens, Persian princes and others clad in everything between. Others dressed - or undressed - to the beat of their own drum. A man in his 70s wore feathery angel’s wings and white platform boots that disappeared in the folds of his oversized trench coat. Still others sported tuxes or tails. Jeans or cutoffs were verbo-ten - and style police were present to enforce the dress code.

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton was among the more than a dozen prominent guests that included singers Fergie and Elton John, actress Melanie Griffith and designer Roberto Cavalli.

Thanking the show’s organiz-ers, Clinton urged the world to get involved in the anti-AIDS fight, declaring that those who

want to help “do not have to be scientists, they do not have to be doctors; they have to be people who care.”

With temperatures hovering around 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit,) there was less bare skin then in past years on the square. Some men and women went topless nonetheless, in anticipation of steamier times at the all-night party in the neo-Gothic city hall. DJ’s and live bands were set up in dozens of rooms, along with buffet tables groaning with finger food and bars offering alcoholic beverages of all descriptions.

“Cold? Not really,” said a young man whose naked upper body was dyed blue and who identified himself only as Gert. “The body paint is keeping me warm.”

Eser Zade, mascaraed and clad in a fantastic outfit of white sequined tights, a flowing blue cape lined with fake ermine and a

tall crown displaying faux pearls, was visibly proud of the attention he was getting.

“I designed it myself and had my tailor make it in Turkey,” he said, demurring when asked how much it costs because “one doesn’t answer such questions.”

The show on the square befitted the occasion, with orchestras and disc jockeys serving up a musical menu that spanned the range from Mozart to Disney - all of course with a fairy-tale Middle Eastern theme. Ballet skits alternated with gyrating disco dancers.

As thousands of spectators pressed against mesh wire barriers separating them from the paying guests, a light show of pulsating purples and reds transformed the venue into a super-dimensional Fantasyland.

JOHANNESBURG — A South African newspaper says Oscar Pistorius has been fined for unpaid taxes after having to declare his assets in court during his bail hearing.

The City Press newspaper reports Sunday that the South African Revenue Service audited and fined the double-amputee runner “less than one million rand” (under $105,000), which he paid.

The Olympian is charged with premeditated murder for the Valentine’s Day shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his upscale house in Pretoria in the pre-dawn hours of Feb. 14.

Pistorius declared in a court affidavit during his application to be freed on bail in February that he earned around $630,000 a year and owned three houses and a vacant plot in South Africa with a combined value of nearly $1 million.

However, both goalkeepers were in superb form with Weidenfeller

saving everything Bayern conjured up while Neuer was just as eye-

catching at the other end in the first all-German European Cup final.

Dortmund, looking to add a second European crown after their

1997 victory, played Bayern at their own game with a high inten-

sity, penetrative attacking plan devised by their impressive young

coach Juergen Klopp.

Next season he will have to pit his wits against Pep Guardiola

who will inherit a Champions League-winning side who just had

a little too much depth and experience for the losers.

“It was a dramatic match. A close match,” said Klopp. “It was a

long season and we were all exhausted. Congratulations to Bayern,

and to Jupp. We wanted to win the thing today... but that’s the way

it goes and we can’t change it.”

BLISTERING PACE

Dortmund began at blistering pace which they maintained for

almost 30 minutes with Reus and their Poland striker Robert Le-

wandowski pulverising the Bayern defence. Lewandowski had the

first of their seven scoring chances in the opening period, powering

in a 30-metre shot which Neuer turned over the bar for a corner.

Neuer also made a superb stop when he stuck out his left leg to

prevent Jakub Blaszczykowski scoring from close range after he

was set up by Lewandowski.

Bayern were virtually over-run at the start but battled back to

create five good scoring chances of their own - three falling to

Robben who could well have netted a hat-trick by halftime.

A poor touch scuppered the first when he had only Weidenfeller to

beat, and the goalkeeper stopped him again by taking a shot straight

in the face when Robben had the goal gaping just before the break.

Weidenfeller also stopped a powerful goalbound header from

Mandzukic after 26 minutes, tipping his powerful effort on to the

bar and over. The only surprise was that neither side made the

breakthrough after 45 breathtaking minutes of superb football.

The game continued to be end-to-end for most of the second

half, but Bayern gradually took control as Dortmund faded with

Lewandowski failing to have the kind of impact he made in the

semi-final when he scored four times against Real Madrid.

Reus also faded as Bayern’s defence tightened up, while Ribery

and Robben kept powering forward and in the end their pace and

guile came together to win the day, leaving the players to celebrate

with the big trophy and the departing Heynckes.

The Spurs grabbed a 3-0 lead in the Western Conference finals and now have won five straight this postseason. With the memory of blowing a 2-0 lead a year ago in the West finals to Okla-homa City, when they lost the next four, the Spurs shook off their sloppy play early and pushed the young Grizzlies to the edge of elimination in the first West final played in Memphis.

San Antonio, which didn’t lead this game until the opening minute of the fourth quarter, can wrap up the series Monday in Memphis and get back to the finals for the first time since their last title in 2007.

The Spurs hit eight of their 10 shots in overtime, with Tim Duncan scoring seven of his 24 points. Tony Parker had five of his 26 in overtime, and even Tiago Splitter, playing with four fouls, scored six in the extra five minutes to

finish with 11.Mike Conley led Memphis with 20

points. Marc Gasol had 16 points and 14 rebounds, Zach Randolph added 14 and 15, and Quincy Pondexter had 15 points. But the Grizzlies, who thrived at the free throw line in knocking off No. 1 seed Oklahoma City in the semifinals, got there only 18 times and made only 10.

The Grizzlies last led 85-84 with 1:04 left in regulation on a 15-footer by Gasol. After that, they managed only to tie it up twice, the last on a layup by Randolph with 4:28 left in overtime. Duncan scored and knocked down the free throw with 4:10 remaining to put the Spurs ahead to stay.

The Spurs dominated the Grizzlies in the paint, outscoring Memphis 58-42 to offset their 17 turnovers, which the Grizzlies turned into 25 points. After the Grizzlies outscored San Antonio in the

first quarter, the Spurs outscored them in each of the final three periods and overtime, where they had an 18-7 edge to put away the win.

Memphis, which had a lead for only 90 seconds in San Antonio, opened up with its trademark grit and grind defense, forcing eight turnovers in the first quarter to grab an 18-point lead. The Spurs quit turning the ball over and whittled away that lead to set up a thrilling fourth quarter in which the teams swapped the lead 11 times with 10 ties — all in the final 17 minutes.

The Grizzlies lost for the first time at home this postseason and just their second time since Feb. 8.

NEW YORK - Tyson Gay accomplished all his goals at the Adidas Grand Prix: He won,

put his body through the grind of rounds - and stayed injury-free.

On a cold, rainy afternoon, the American-record holder eased to victory in the 100 meters,

finishing in 10.02 seconds into a headwind Sat-urday. He appeared to slow down a bit at the end but still beat countryman Ryan Bailey by .13.

“It was important to leave here healthy and not try to push it too hard with the conditions,” Gay said. “I feel pretty good.”

A year ago at this meet, Gay made his return to competition after major hip surgery, running in the “B’’ race as he scrambled to ready himself for Olympic trials. Saturday’s Diamond League event on Randall’s Island in New York was a very different experience.

After Gay barely missed out on a bronze medal in London, he’s off to a strong start this season and looks as though he can challenge Usain Bolt again. The 100 field had to run semi-finals to qualify for the final, which Gay figured would be good preparation for U.S. trials before the world championships in August.

“I’m definitely pleased with the time,” he said. “I felt comfortable.” Gay could probably relate to high jumper Blanka Vlasic’s feelings on Saturday. The two-time world champion from Croatia competed for the first time since ankle surgery 16 months ago.

“I cannot explain to you how scared I was before this competition,” she said. “I came here; I didn’t know if I’m ready or not.” She was ready, all right. Vlasic won, clearing 1.94 meters (6 feet, 4 1/4 inches).

“It’s just a dream come true, especially with these conditions,” she said. “It took a lot of focus and energy to stay calm from the beginning of warm-up outside, when I was already wet and cold, until the end of the competition. It’s not easy to jump under these circumstances. You just cannot get warm enough.”

And the cold weather made her foot ache. “But I don’t care,” Vlasic said. “I’m happy, and I know it will recover.”

PARIS - Former champion Ana Ivanovic of Serbia survived a second-set collapse to beat Croatian Petra Martic 6-1 3-6 6-3 and reach the second round of the French Open on Sunday. Serbian 14th seed Ivanovic, who lifted the Suzanne Lenglen Cup in 2008, breezed through the opening set but dropped serve in the fourth game of the second on a chilly Parisian morning.

Martic levelled the tie with a smash, only for the world number 107 to collapse early in the decider on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Ivanovic showed signs of nerves too as she closed in on victory, los-ing three games in a row and wasting four match points.

She prevailed on the fifth occa-sion, though, when Martic sent a backhand long after one hour 50 minutes.

Next up for Ivanovic is either France’s Mathilde Johansson or South African Chanelle Scheepers.

“A lot of fans, they were supporting in the end,” he said. “Some of them, maybe we couldn’t change their minds. But we did our job.”

Far away from the jeering supporters at London’s Stamford Bridge, Benitez completed his brief but pro-ductive stint as manager with a 5-3 loss to Manchester City in a season-ending friendly Saturday night.

Distrusted by Chelsea fans following his tenure at Liverpool, Benitez never settled in after he was hired on a seven-month contract in November to replace Roberto Di Matteo, who was sacked six months after leading Chelsea to its first Champions League title. Still, Benitez did manage to lead Chelsea to the Europa League title during his short time with the team.

“A lot of fans, they were supporting in the end,” he said. “Some of them, maybe we couldn’t change their minds. But we did our job.”

Outgoing Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho is ex-pected to return to Chelsea for a second stint, the ninth managerial change under owner Roman Abramovich since 2004. Benitez appears headed to Napoli.

Benitez guided the Blues to the semifinals of the FA Cup and League Cup and a third-place finish in the Premier League, ensuring the club’s 11th straight Champions League appearance. The Spaniard’s title was interim manager, and very quickly it became ap-parent he wouldn’t be kept on.

“A final, two semifinals, a trophy, top three,” he said after Saturday’s match, beaming. “Everybody was saying, ‘He has to do this. He has to do that.’ We did it.” “The circumstances were special, still we did our job as professionals,” he said.

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis was quoted Friday as saying Benitez will take over as coach of his club from Walter Mazzarri, who left to replace Andrea Stramaccioni at Inter Milan.

“It’s true that I will go back to London and will try to enjoy with the family for a while,” Benitez said, avoiding a direct reply.

City also is changing managers. Roberto Mancini was fired on May 13, exactly a year after leading City to its first Premier League title since 1968, leaving assistant Brian Kidd in charge for the team’s two-city U.S. tour, which began when City beat Chelsea 4-3 Thursday in St. Louis. Malaga coach Manuel Pellegrini appears likely to take over at City.

In Saturday’s match, which was largely devoid of tough tackles and less physical than many training ses-sions, Samir Nasri scored twice for City and Ramires had two goals for Chelsea, which was playing its 76th

match of the season.City built a 2-0 lead on goals by Gareth

Barry in the third minute and Nasri in the 29th. Ramires scored for Chelsea in the 46th and 69th minutes around James Milner’s goal for City in the 55th.

Nasri made it 4-2 in the 74th, Juan Mata curled in a free kick for Chelsea eight minutes later, and Edin Dzeko bounced a 30-yard shot past Petr Cech in the 84th.

“The fans here today and in St. Louis have watched two great games, with lots of goals, lots of attacking football,” Barry said. “I’m sure there’s a few defensive coaches who are not too happy.”

The match was played four days af-ter Manchester City announced it will partner with the New York Yankees to launch New York City FC, which will become Major League Soccer’s 20th team in 2015. While planning for a new venue, the expansion team could start play at Yankee Stadium, which can fit a football pitch that the team says is 100-by-64 meters (110-by-70 yards).

“All us boys like traveling to the U.S.,” City goalkeeper Joe Hart said. “MLS is growing and growing and growing, and for Manchester City it’s the same thing. We’re growing as well. So it’s good to do it together.”

Santos’ Neymar complains with a teammate during the final match of the Sao Paulo State soccer league against Corinthians in Santos, Brazil, Sunday, May 19, 2013.

their website (www.fcbarcelona.es) confirmed Neymar’s decision. “My family and friends already know about my decision... I want to thank Santos’ fans for these nine incredible years. My feelings for the club and the fans will never change,” Neymar added.

“Titles, goals, dribbles, celebrations and the songs the fans created for me will always be in my heart. “This is a different moment for me, sad (depar-ture) and happy (new challenge). God bless me in my choices.

“I made a point of playing tomor-row’s match in Brasilia. I want the opportunity to enter the pitch once more with the ‘mantle’ (Santos shirt) and hear the fans shout my name.” Santos play Flamengo at the capital’s completely refurbished World Cup stadium in their opening match of the Brazilian championship on Sunday.

The club said on Friday they had agreed to transfer Neymar, letting him choose between two offers. Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper put the latest offer from Barcelona at 74 million Brazilian Real ($36.12 million).

Barcelona said Neymar “stands out for his polished skills, he makes a difference and scores goals. ... He has received many accolades and the praise of the celebrated Pele, of whom

he is considered his heir”.

MESSI-NEYMAR LINK

The reigning South American Player of the Year will link up at Barce-lona with Argentine ace Lionel Messi, four times FIFA World Player of the Year. The pair faced each other when Barcelona beat Santos 4-0 in the Club World Cup final in December 2011.

Barcelona are looking to revamp their stellar squad after what by their high standards is a slump during which they have been eliminated from the European Champions League at the semi-final stage for the last two seasons.

Lining up Messi and Neymar to-gether will likely keep the Barcelona standard at least as high as in their Champions League and Club World Cup winning seasons, a benchmark arch-rivals Real Madrid could struggle to match.

Neymar has been a target of top European sides for at least three years, including Chelsea in 2010, but San-tos managed to reject all offers and improve his deal with sponsorships. The ready smiling Neymar became a celebrity, had a part in a television soap opera and admirers imitated his

Mohican style haircut. However, since the middle of last

year a move had become increasingly difficult for Neymar to resist while Santos lost the form that took them to their third South American Lib-ertadores Cup title in 2011 and first since Pele’s 1960s heyday.

“After rejecting a series of million-dollar offers for Neymar Jr, since the middle of 2010... against the trend in Brazilian football of sell-

ing its best talents quickly, Santos FC finally agreed on negotiations,” Santos said.

“Santos FC is freeing Neymar Jr, knowing they made all the efforts to keep him in Brazil for as long as possible, even offering to renew his present contract ending in July 2014. “Given the confidentiality of the contract, by mutual agreement, the bases of the negotiation will not be divulged by the parties.”

Singing, dancing and slapping each other on the back, many fans offered their own rendition of the Queen song “We Are The Champi-ons” as well as traditional fan chants praising Bayern.

The mood was entirely different 600-km to the north in Dortmund, a former mining town about as far away from the glitzy and cosmo-politan world of Munich that you can get in a country where opinion was divided on who was the popular choice in the all-German final.

The match began well for the thousands of Dortmund fans packed into the Friedensplatz square in their black and yellow jerseys after the team dominated their loathed oppo-nents for much of the first half.

Joy turned to despair when Munich scored after an hour before a deafening roar greeted Dortmund’s equaliser in the 68th minute, reviving memories of Bayern’s squandering of a 1-0

lead in last year’s final before losing on penalties to Chelsea.

However, Robben’s late inter-vention did nothing more than to leave the crowd in stunned silence.

“It’s all crap and I don’t know what to say,” said Dortmund fan Daniel Ruetting as others nearby wept openly. “It’s time to go home and sleep over it. There’s always next year.”

Orang-utan populations in Indonesia’s Borneo and Sumatra island are facing severe threats from habitat loss, illegal logging, fires and poaching. Conservationists predicted that without immediate action, orangutans are likely to be the first great ape to become extinct in the wild.

Earlier in the day, the Jakarta Globe reported that Psy will make his first visit to Indonesia to hold a concert at the Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex in Jakarta on July 6. The concert is to mark “Korea-Indonesia Friendship Year 2013,” according to the Indonesian daily. “Psy was invited to the event to celebrate 40 years of close ties between Korea and Indonesia,” YG Entertainment said in a release, noting that the singer is not staging a solo concert.

The 36-year-old singer, whose real name is Park Jae-sang, galloped his way to international fame with his megahit “Gangnam Style,” which has been viewed more than 1.6 billion times on the video-sharing Web site YouTube. His recently released single, “Gentle-man,” also made it into the Guinness World Records book as the most-watched video in a 24-hour span. It has been viewed more than 50 million times on You-Tube since it hit the Internet on April 12. He is currently in the United States to promote his new single.

AntaraJAKARTA - Indonesia has a big

potential to become the base of the processing industry and manufacturing after the implementation of ASEAN Economic Community 2015 (AEC-2015).

“But its realization largely depends on whether or not Indonesia is able to set up the infrastructure, land and skilled personnel,” Indonesian Cham-ber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) Chairman Suryo Bambang Sulisto said on Friday.

Speaking in a seminar on Indonesia Banking Expo 2013 (IBEX-2013), held at Jakarta Convention Center, Suryo noted that to face the AEC-2015, the most important thing was that Indonesia should prepare is social factor namely the people to accept the AEC.

According to him, Indonesia has yet to systematically and consistently prepare its people and the Micro, Small and Medium Business (UMKM) to compete in the ASEAN Economic Community.

“The UMKM must play its role in AEC, because Indonesia still needs to work hard to face the AEC by integrat-ing its domestic elements,” said the Kadin chief.

Suryo said the questions if Indonesia was ready to face AEC-2015 frequently came up, but according to him they were no longer relevant because AEC has been agreed and its implementation has already been in sight.

But more relevant question, accord-ing to him, is that whether or not Indo-nesia has made specific preparation, needed to face the AEC-2015.

WASHINGTON — Alleged misbehavior by the U.S. tax collection service and other federal agencies gives Republicans some-thing else to talk about and investigate as the economy clearly, if slowly, recovers on President Barack Obama’s watch and robs the opposition party of a central argument against Democrats.

Amid a series of recent positive economic reports, Republicans are revving up their por-trayal of the Obama administration as scandal-ridden and inept, while largely abandoning the party’s where-is-the-recovery criticism.

Republicans had little choice, given that the economy has gained considerable strength over the past 18 months. Today, the federal budget deficit is shrinking rapidly and tax receipts are rising. Consumer confidence and spending are up, as are auto and housing sales. Stocks are near all-time highs.

Such improvements give U.S. policymak-ers some rare breathing room, even if the nearly 12 million people still out of work don’t discern the brighter picture.

While unemployment is at 7.5 percent, it’s down from the 10 percent of October 2009. Also, recent job creation in the private sector has been relatively strong.

Obama and Democrats are naturally talk-ing up the recent economic gains and the president’s efforts to promote more jobs. He’s been trying to draw attention to his job-creation ideas in a series of events outside Washington before audiences of workers.

As a result of fiscal improvements, the an-nual federal budget deficit will drop this year to $642 billion after four straight years of $1 trillion-plus annual shortfalls, the bipartisan Congressional Budget Office reported this past week.

The Treasury says it will pay down a small portion of the national debt this quarter for the first time in six years.

There’s “no question” that the alleged scandals are taking the attention of many politicians away from economic concerns, said Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a former director of the Congressional Budget Office and top economic adviser to Republican Sen. John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign.

Holtz-Eakin and many other economists emphasize that the improvements probably will be short-lived because Congress has yet to seriously address an overhaul of the federal tax code or fast-rising costs of programs such as Social Security retirement benefits and the Medicare and Medicaid programs that provide health care coverage to the elderly and poor.

The staunchly non-EU Swiss inked a preliminary accord Friday during Chinese Premier Li Keqiang’s first visit to Europe since taking the helm in March’s once-in-a-decade power transfer.

The final Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is set to be signed in July, capping two years of talks.

“This has huge meaning for global free trade,” Li said in Switzerland, explaining that it sends the world “a strong signal about the fight against trade and investment protectionism, as well as the liberalisation and facilitation of trade”.

Swiss Economy Minister Johann Sch-neider-Ammann echoed that.

“The FTA will not only further develop and deepen our bilateral relationship, but it will also contribute to much needed prog-ress towards global liberalisation of trade and to curbing protectionism,” he said.

In Switzerland, Li took the opportu-nity to launch a broadside against the EU, challenging its punitive import duties on Chinese-made solar panels, as well as

moves against the mobile telecommunica-tions sector.

The EU argues that such Chinese prod-ucts are being dumped on its market, hurt-ing European firms, but China’s Xinhua news agency quoted Li as saying the moves “harm others without benefiting oneself”.

The economies of China and the 27-nation EU are tightly linked. The EU is China’s top export market, while China is second to the United States for EU exports. But the balance is largely in China’s favour, with Chinese exports to the EU worth $375 billion in 2012, and EU exports to China, $186 billion.

In contrast, Switzerland is one of the rare Western countries with a positive trade balance with China, its third-ranked partner after the EU and the United States.

Swiss-Chinese bilateral trade totalled $26.3 billion in 2012, with $22.8 billion of that in Switzerland’s favour.

Its top exports to China are watches, pharmaceuticals and chemicals, and ma-chinery, while textiles and machinery head

the list of imported Chinese goods. The Swiss upper hand goes a long way

to explaining its business sector’s positive stance on the FTA, but the Alpine country also sees it as a way to get the edge on competitors. With the strong Swiss franc and high labour costs making it hard to beat rivals on price, Swiss firms have long made quality their selling point.

“This free-trade agreement is an im-portant step into the right direction. It will facilitate the access to the Chinese market and will strengthen the competitivity of Swiss industry’s products. And it will also provide advantages compared to interna-tional competitors, especially from the EU,” Ivo Zimmermann of the Swissmem engineering federation told AFP.

He said he could not comment in de-tail until the FTA was signed, but that he expected “substantial facilitations” for ex-ports, even if Chinese tariffs may not be re-duced on all goods. Even the country’s solar power body, Swissolar, sees no threat.

“In the Swissolar perspective the free-trade deal with China has to be judged posi-tively,” said its head David Stickelberger, noting that Swiss manufacturers focus on niche markets and that cutting duties on Chinese panels would lower end-user prices in Switzerland.

This year’s election will de-termine whether Fernandez has enough votes in congress to undo constitutional term limits and ex-tend her rule beyond 2015. But she suggested Saturday night that she won’t try. She said “I’m not eternal, nor do I want to be.”

Putting human rights violators on trial and pushing to put more of Argentina’s wealth in the hands of its poorest people will continue to be the pillars of this government, she said. “Equality is the grand symbol of this decade and of those to come,” she vowed.

Her opponents took aim at the “decade won” theme, noting that the years of strong economic growth have ended, and saying that if this is what victory looks like, Argentina is in big trouble.

Whether the Kirchners’ decade will be remembered for its historic achievements or its missed oppor-tunities depends on whom you talk with in Argentina, where society is bitterly divided over their legacy.

Analysts consulted by The As-sociated Press said they deserve credit for fostering 7 percent aver-age growth and restoring power

to the presidency. Kirchner was inaugurated on May 25, 2003 at a chaotic time; the country was still suffering from its 2001 crisis, and poverty was extreme.

The Kirchners began an era of social inclusion, external debt reduction and state intervention that was the exact opposite of the privatization binge and anything-goes capitalism that characterized Argentina in the 1990s.

Ten years later and going it alone after her husband died of a heart at-tack, Fernandez has intensified her government’s control over the econ-omy and diverted billions of dollars more to subsidizing the poor.

“This is an extraordinarily signif-icant decade in Argentine history,” said philosopher Ricardo Forster, a supporter. The transformations have managed to enrich the social, cul-tural, political and economic life.”

LONDON — Police, politi-cians and activists in Britain are warning of rising anti-Muslim sentiment following the slaughter of an off-duty British soldier in a London street, an apparent act of Islamic extremism that has horri-fied the nation.

Metropolitan Police investigating the killing of Lee Rigby, a 25-year-old soldier who was run over by attackers then butchered by knives, arrested three more men in the mur-der investigation Saturday. Stun guns were used on two of the three men, aged 24 and 28, police said.

The latest arrests came as an estimated 1,500 members of an ex-tremist right-wing group called the English Defense League marched in the northern English city of Newcastle, chanting Rigby’s name. In the southern English city of Ports-mouth, police arrested two men for a racially motivated assault as hundreds of demonstrators gathered near one mosque, while several more people were detained for al-leged racist offenses elsewhere.

The two men suspected of kill-ing the soldier, Michael Adebo-lajo, 28, and Michael Adebowale, 22, remained under armed guard

in separate London hospitals after police shot them at the scene. Police have not officially named the suspects because they have not been charged, but British officials, speaking on condition of anonym-ity because they are not authorized to discuss the investigation, have confirmed their names to The As-sociated Press.

Wednesday’s murder in south-east London’s Woolwich area shocked the nation partly because the horrific scenes were recorded on witnesses’ cellphones, and a video picked up by British media showed one of the two suspects, his hands bloodied, making po-litical statements and warning of further violence as the soldier lay on the ground behind him.

Counter-terrorism police also are questioning a friend of Adebo-lajo who was arrested Friday night immediately after he gave BBC Television an interview detailing why he thought Adebolajo may have become radicalized.

Metropolitan Police said the friend, identified by the BBC as 31-year-old Abu Nusaybah, was wanted himself on suspicion of “the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.” The force declined to elaborate.

NEW DELHI — Officials react-ed with outrage Sunday to an auda-cious attack by about 200 suspected Maoist rebels who set off a roadside bomb and opened fire on a convoy carrying Indian ruling Congress party leaders and members in an eastern state, killing 28 people and wounding 24 others.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, accompanied by party Pres-

ident Sonia Gandhi, visited the injured in a hospital in the capital of Chhattisgarh state and said the government would take firm action against the perpetrators.

“We are devastated,” said Gan-dhi, who denounced what she called a “dastardly attack” on the country’s democratic values. Rajnath Singh, president of opposition Hindu na-tionalist Bharatiya Janata Party, said the country should unite in its fight against the Maoist insurgency.

The convoy was attacked Satur-day in a densely forested area about 215 miles (345 kilometers) south of Raipur, Chhattisgarh’s capital, as the Congress members were return-ing from a party rally.

Four state party leaders and five police officers were among those killed. Other victims were party supporters. Police identified one of those dead as Mahendra Karma, a Congress leader in Chhattisgarh who founded a local militia, the

Salwa Judum, to combat the Maoist rebels. The anti-rebel militia had to be reined in after it was accused of atrocities against tribals - in-digenous people at the bottom of India’s rigid social ladder.

The dead also included state Con-gress party chief Nand Kumar Patel and his son. The injured included former federal minister Vidya Cha-ran Shukla, 83, police said.

The Press Trust of India news agency said the attackers blocked

the road by felling trees, forcing the convoy to halt. Police officer R.K. Vij said the suspected rebels trig-gered a land mine that blew up one of the cars. The attackers then fired at the Congress party leaders and their supporters before fleeing.

The Congress party is the main opposition party in the state. It has stepped up political activities, try-ing to win the support of tribals, ahead of state elections scheduled to be held by December.

The Neon Museum, where Sin City’s most iconic signs go to retire, has begun aiming more than 100 multicolored spotlights on its outdoor collection of 150 signs. It’s also extending hours for nighttime tours, and a handful of signs have been fully re-stored with new bulbs.

Since October, visitors have been able to meander past the Sil-ver Slipper, Aladdin’s lamp, the Stardust marquee and dozens of other signs saved from the wrecking ball. But the museum closed at 5:30 p.m., meaning that tourists had to squint through the desert sun to glimpse the old guardians of this nighttime city.

For the first time Friday, visitors were able to behold the fully restored signs in all their luminescent glory. The dozens of other markers were bathed in custom-designed spotlights, like true Vegas showgirls.

“The skyline of Las Vegas is a nighttime skyline,” said execu-tive director Danielle Kelly, moments before the first afterhours tour came through. “We stand among the architecture of this city. The notable architecture of this city is its signage. And their illumination is when they came alive,” Kelly said.

In a town known for detonating buildings that are beyond their prime, Las Vegas’ Neon Museum stands apart in its zeal for salvaging the blinking, glowing memories of the past. Kelly says time has transformed the signs from commercial emissaries into objects of art.

The hour-long guided tours bend through the artfully cluttered 1.5-acre (0.6-hectare) lot. The excursion offers an alternative to the mega-mall homogeny along the desert metropolis’ revamped main drag.

Worn by the beating sun and twisted by desert winds, most of the marquees have lost their flash, some of their bulbs and much of their paint. They tilt toward each other like tombstones in an ancient cemetery. But taken together, they tell a story about the town’s glitziest days.

There’s the nouveau graveyard’s oldest sign: a green and white 1930s relic that marked a restaurant where Hoover Dam con-struction workers bought fried chicken and bootleg whiskey.

One of the signs with working bulbs — a vintage arrow point-ing lovebirds to “Marriage Information” — alludes to the town’s role as the nation’s elopement, and divorce, capital.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A baby gorilla has been born to first-time parents at an Ohio zoo. The healthy 5-pound (2.2-kilogram) male gorilla arrived Thursday at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, joining 16 other gorillas there.

It’s the first offspring for mother Kambera, who has displayed a lack of maternal skills. Animal care experts are

raising the baby in an environment that provides around-the-clock neonatal care. They stay close to the mother, with the hope of reuniting the pair.

The father is Oliver, who is deaf and is believed to have lost his hearing when very young. Zoo staff members say it’s unknown when visitors will be able to see the baby.

There have been 31 gorillas born at the Columbus zoo, including Colo in 1956. That female western lowland gorilla is believed to be the oldest gorilla in any zoo.

SANTA MONICA, California — A Southern California teenager turned heads at his prom when he showed up with a Danish model as his date.

Sports Illustrated model Nina Agdal agreed to step in as Jake Davidson’s date for the traditional high school dance Thursday night after he got turned down by supermodel Kate Upton.

The teenager appeared in a YouTube video that was viewed more than 2.5 million times asking Upton to be his date.

After Upton declined because of a scheduling conflict, Agdal volunteered to go, saying she never got to attend her own prom. The Danish model is better known as the bikini-clad sunbather in a Carl’s Jr. ad.

Davidson told the Los Angeles Daily News (http://bit.ly/173eVPS) he had an incredible night and said Agdal was down to earth.

EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

The film, the last English-language entry competing for the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or, sees Swinton play Eve, a grungy but erudite vampire — who’s married to a forlorn vampire musi-cian, Adam, played by Tom Hiddlestone. Several-hundred-year-old Adam — of Biblical fame — has been living quite happily ever since being expelled from the Garden of Eden.

That is, until the 21st century came along with its excesses and greed and pushed him into a full-flung existential cri-sis. He cracks, and orders a wooden bullet to kill himself. With such a wacky plot, it’s no surprise the film nearly didn’t get made. It took seven years to find a backer — which Jarmusch says is because producers won’t take creative risks anymore.

“I wanted to make a vampire love-story...The reason it took so long was that no one wanted to give us the money. It’s getting more and more and more difficult for films that are maybe a little unusual

or not predictable or not satisfying the expectations of everybody — which is the beauty of cinema, discovering new films of all forms.”

He added: “But look, now we’re here at Cannes.” Lovers of independent cin-ema and vampire fans should certainly be pleased the film saw the light of day, or perhaps, night. It quirkily spruces up vampire lore. Adam and Eve are not about blood-sucking and murder — but refined lovers of literature, science, mu-sic and learning in general.

When Eve’s estranged sister “drinks Ian,” a friend, to death, Eve tells her off, saying that in the 21st century people just won’t understand such barbarity. (The verb “drink,” instead of “blood-sucking,” was one of the many moments that provoked raucous laughter from spectators.)

It’s not like they can just dump the bodies in the Thames with the tubercu-losis sufferers like in old times, she says. Now, in the 21st century, they get their

blood from the blood-transfusion section of a hospital. Alongside this, John Hurt plays a vampire Christopher Marlowe, who’s still bitter that Shakespeare be-came more famous. Swinton said the film provided a unique opportunity to reinvent the vampire genre.

“There’s a feeling of beautiful luxury about approaching this kind of portrait, because you can come with a Martian’s-eye view... We were able to create our own lexicon,” she said. For instance, in the film the vampires elegantly cover their mouths and have a strange ritual with gloves that goes unexplained.

At heart, the film is the love story be-tween Adam and Eve, who try to rekindle their love despite living in different places, he in Detroit and she in Tangiers. It is as touching as it is odd.

“We knew we needed to show a long love story ... that was so evolved that what they actually say to each other is the tip of the iceberg of a conversation they’ve been having for 500 years,” Swinton said. “That was very interest-ing. We wanted to show a couple who are trying to stay together. Trying to live obviously, but also trying to live together.”

CANNES, France — Jerry Lewis, so beloved in France, isn’t quite overcome with emotion now that he’s back at the Cannes Film Festival.

The festival, he says, is “for snobs,” and when he meets a reporter from his native land, he exhales, “It’s so nice to hear an American.” To him, Cannes isn’t an epicenter of rabid Lewis fandom, it’s simply “business,” he says, chomping on gum.

And at 87, Lewis is back in busi-ness. Nearly two decades since his last film, he’s at Cannes with “Max Rose,” a modest independent film in which he stars as an elderly man reconciling himself to life without his late wife.

“I’m very happy to relax and stay home with my family, and if something comes up, I’ll consider it,” Lewis, in an interview, said of his return to movies. “That’s the nice part about 87. You just tell people: Oh, you’re very tired.”

At Cannes, Lewis has been any-thing but tired, both burnishing and tarnishing his legacy as a brilliant comedic performer. His Cannes tribute — the festival paid “hom-

age” to him in an out-of-competition screening of “Max Rose,” as well as with a screening of his 1961 clas-sic “The Ladies Man” — has been overshadowed by his views about female comedians.

In a press conference, Lewis told reporters that his earlier-stated feel-ings haven’t changed in recent years: Comedy isn’t for women, he claims. A day after his comments roiled women across the Internet, Lewis wasn’t apologetic, saying he sees females as mothers, not stand-ups.

“It’s the truth. I can’t help it,” Lewis says, shrugging. “Women, it’s just wrong. I don’t care that the audience laughs at it and likes it. I don’t happen to like it. I have too much respect for the gender. And I think that they are wrong in doing it. I can’t expect them to stop working, but just don’t work anywhere where I have to look at it.”

It’s a clearly out-of-date attitude that has turned many away from Lewis. In Cannes, “Max Rose” didn’t help his reputation. The film, by first-time filmmaker Daniel Noah, drew terrible reviews at the festival. Variety said only “the most irratio-nally charitable of Lewis’ fans” will appreciate it.
