NEW YORK — Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong and singer Norah Jones appeared in a rare concert together Wednesday night, playing songs they recorded for an album two years ago.

The concert wasn’t widely an-nounced and the two performed for about 200 fans in a cellar-like setting called the Bowery Electric in Manhattan. The hour-long per-formance included songs from their 2013 album, “Foreverly,” a collec-tion of songs inspired by “Songs Our Daddy Taught Us,” an album released by The Everly Brothers in 1958.

Armstrong played guitar and sang, while Jones switched between guitar and piano. The duo’s band also included drums, a standup bass and, at times, a violin and a harmonica.

Together, their voices made for a soothing performance far differ-ent than Armstrong’s rock perfor-mances with Green Day, which was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

No other performances were announced.

Jones’ band, Puss N Boots, is slated to open for Neil Young dur-ing a series of dates in July. (ap)

The actor, along with co-stars Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Jason Statham, unveiled Uni-versal Studio Hollywood’s latest attraction: “Fast & Furious — Su-percharged,” which opened to the public on Wednesday.

“I’m more excited than anybody to get on that tram and I want to be in the front seat and I want to know what this thing feels like,” said Diesel during a press preview for the ride on Tuesday.

“Supercharged” is a 3-D motion

addition to the park’s classic studio tour tram ride. Stars of the films take guests on an explosion-packed car chase using hydraulics and HD images projected on a massive 360-degree screen. Riders are blasted with wind, fog and mist as they at-tempt a high-speed escape through crashing cars and gunfire.

“I know when we were making it, it felt like we were creating some-thing that I had never experienced. We employed all kinds of incredible technology,” said Diesel before

opening the ride with a ceremony, which included pyrotechnics and car stunts. “I’m really excited to get in there and feel it out and get that adrenaline pumping.”

During his speech to the crowd, Diesel dedicated the ride to his “Fast & Furious” co-star Paul Walker, who died in a car crash in 2013.

He said production will begin on “Furious 8” in 2016.

“It feels like we’re beyond hav-ing to prove that it’s a worthy saga and it feels like we can focus on making it the best film in history and that’s what we’re going for,” Diesel told reporters on the ride’s red carpet.

Statham was tight-lipped about the next film, but teased a possible return of his imprisoned character, Ian Shaw.

“Anything is possible in the mov-ies, you know that,” said Statham. “Unless you’re dead, which Shaw wasn’t dead. So you know there’s a few ways we can resuscitate him. We can get him out of that prison in more ways than one, don’t you worry about that.”

Diesel previously announced that the 8th installment will be released on April 14, 2017. (ap)

ATLANTA — A court-appoint-ed representative of Bobbi Kristina Brown has filed a lawsuit against her partner, Nick Gordon, claiming he took money from her and abused her physically and emotionally.

Bedilia Hargrove filed a lawsuit against Gordon Wednesday in Ful-ton County Superior Court. The complaint says Gordon routinely transferred large amounts of money from Brown’s accounts to his with-out Brown’s permission.

The complaint also accused

Gordon of misrepresenting his rela-tionship with Brown, being violent toward her and taking more than $11,000 from her account after she was found face down in a bathtub at her suburban Atlanta townhome.

Gordon is accused of assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, unjust enrich-ment and conversion.

The suit seeks at least $10 mil-lion in damages. A call to Gordon’s attorney was not immediately returned. (ap)

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebra-tion of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beau-tifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beauti-fully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

DENPASAr - Fourteen days after the corpse of Engeline was found on Jalan Sedap Malam, East Denpasar, the crime scene is still visited by the public. Moreover, some people from outside Denpasar deliberately come to see the house where the pretty girl was killed and buried. Some are just looking at it or taking a flower bouquet, while others saying prayers.

“All this time, I just watch it on television. Driven by curiosity, I come here in person. Apparently the

location is still crowded as well,” said a man claiming to come from Tabanan.

This situation is exploited by drink sellers. Some are selling young coconut and ice cream. However, there are parties harmed by this situation. One of them is the owner of spa located just north of the house of Margriet. Since the corpse of Engeline was found, the guest visit to the spa immediately declines.

“It’s pretty quiet, not like before.

Probably, customers feel ashamed of coming in here (to spa—Ed) be-cause it is always crowded so that they will be seen by many people,” said a security guard of the spa requesting anonymity.

According to him, the spa estab-lished six months ago spreads on the area of ??700 square meters. The land is contracted for ten years. “Having been launched, the visitors are reasonably crowded. However, since the case our guests drop drastically. If this condition

persists, the salary payment may be delayed,” he sighed. He con-tinued that the case has an impact on the decline in visitors reaching 60 percent.

In the meantime, the treatments on offer at the spa include a bath and aromatherapy as well as mas-sage to loosen tense muscles. “Our rates vary, where the standard rate is offered at IDR 300,000 and VIP room at IDR 400,000,” said the security guard.

During he works at the spa

company, he ever heard the cries of Engeline. However, he does not suspect the violenceexperienced by the poor kid. “The owner of coffee shop next to the house also heard the cries of Engeline day and night,” he told.

When the corpse of Engeline was taken to the ambulance, he admitted to be furious with the people in the house. “I am upset to see such an act. The perpetrator is vey barbaric. If I meet Agus, I may hit him,” he said. (rah)

“The impact is worse than terror-ists. If terrorists bomb once, it may claim hundreds of people. In the meantime, drugs can killed 50 ad-dicts every day in Indonesia,” said the

Prevention Division Head of the Bali Narcotic Agency (BNNP Bali), Ketut Adi Lisdiani, Wednesday (Jun. 24).

More seriously, the drug syndi-cates dominantly target productive

age of 15-25 years old. “The drug case poses an extraordinary crime and should be treated seriously if we do not want to lose the next genera-tion,” she said.

The effort to fight against drugs less maximal

DENPASAr - Circulation of drugs in Indonesia is getting more massive and even it is ranked third in the world. This condition is very alarming because without an immediate handling it will undermine the people’s life in this country.

With the fourth largest number of population in the world, Indonesia becomes an easy target for interna-tional drug syndicates. Therefore, every effort is made to smuggle or to traffic the illicit goods to Indonesia. “Indonesia has a long coastal region so that it is a good entrance for drug trafficking. Approximately 80 percent of the drugs are smuggled by sea,” said Lisdiani.

To prevent, she added, society must jointly participate in the fight against it. Nowadays, people are still indifferent to this condition so that drugs very easily get to remote villages. Moreover, it is supported by the proliferation of cafés in Bali.

“On that account, we continue to disseminate the hazards of drugs so that people can understand and be aware of it. Otherwise, more and more people will be addicted to drugs,” he said.

In the meantime, Spokesman of Bali Police, Hery Wiyanto, accom-panied by Division Head of Public Information, Sri Harmiti, said that based on the results of evaluation of the Supreme Antique Operations 2015 held on May 26 to June 15, there are several things to be addressed in synergy with relevant agencies. Nowadays, people tend to be passive against the efforts to prevent and combat drug abuse. In addition, the operation plan has been sniffed first by drug bookie and dealer so that the disclosure during the operation is less maximal. Due to inadequate IT equipment, it is unable to uncover the

syndicates in larger network.“This can become the inputs for

evaluation and correction in the fu-ture. Various obstacles encountered in the field during the operation will be looked for solutions,” he said.

According to Hery, during the operation carried out by police, his party can arrest 82 suspects. In the meantime, the target achievement of during the Antique Operation his party can totally reveal 36 cases of the 41 targeted cases. In the meantime, the non-target reaches 38 cases.

In details, the Directorate of Bali Police Narcotics can reveal 15 sus-pects, Denpasar Police (25 suspects), Buleleng Police (five suspects), Ta-banan Police (one suspect), Gianyar Police (17 suspects), Klungkung Police (two suspects), Bangli Police (four suspects), Karangasem Police (two suspects), Jembrana Police (four suspects), and Badung Police (five suspects). In the meantime, the number of evidence secured consists of 0.90 gram of marijuana, 1,409.85 grams of crystal meth, 1,172 ecstasy pills, 962.4 liters of liquor, 1,276 bottles of liquor, 485 drugs and cash worth IDR 3.8 million.

“In the future, it is necessary to empower the community through a variety of innovative breakthroughs in order to create a drug-free environ-ment. In addition, it is required the establishment of antidrug generation. Optimizing the implementation of law enforcement is meant to give deterrent effect to perpetrators,” he said. (rah)

Alessandro Michele’s speedy Gucci collection for men in January, pulled together in just five days, was very indicative of his fashion lean-ings, which are decidedly gender flexible.

Gucci looks for men included white crocheted shorts with an embroidered butterfly and anchor. Transparent lace shirts with decora-tive appliques were worn with shiny basketball shorts or athletic pants. Flared elephant pants were paired with glittery sweaters and shirts with pointy collars. A double-breasted suit had a shirt with micro-ruffles and a red flower at the neck.

More traditional designs like the belted Gucci trench coat had ap-plique details like a big snarling cat — one of the season’s motifs — and was shown with a red crocheted hat with a pompon. The trench also was worn with a trailing floral scarf.

When Michele did dip into the Gucci archives, he turned those references on their head by making a sailor top out of patterned fabric or embroidering anchor detailing on

tops. The red-and-green Gucci stripe circled around a coat like a rainbow motif before it in the 1970s.

As he has done in his past two shows, Michele sent both men and women down the runway, often in similar outfits, as he blurred the lines between genders. They wore the same baggy shorts that shouted skirt on first impact, and floral suits were unisex.

Michele is breaking with the past in every way conceivable. Last season he ventured to turn the con-temporary theater where Gucci has previewed its collections for years into a subway station. This season, he ditched the theater entirely and took the fashion crowd on a weed-strewn journey to a disused former customs station.

Michele had the cavernous space lined with red-lacquered chairs with green floral upholstery, and models strutted down an unusually long run-way of a couple of hundred meters -- but were spared the turn back.

Andrea Pompilio is wiping the slate clean from his first two seasons

at Canali, sweeping aside geometric prints in favor of monochromes in deep Mediterranean shades.

But the real news of the season is his materials. He made outerwear out of a silk organza that created transparency, durable denim out of wool-linen blend, and terry cloth tops and jackets from knitwear.

The papery transparency of the safari jackets, bombers and trench coats allow just a glimpse of the softly striped shirt below. Despite its lightness, the organza fabric maintains a nearly architectural shape.

“That they see through your trenchcoat your suit or shirt, I find very interesting,” Pompilio said backstage after the show.

The terry cloth recalled the heyday of 1950s men’s dressing, when Hollywood stars would be pictured poolside in velvety shorts outfits. Pompilio expressed his love for geometry by creating stripes of terry cloth on shirts and jackets, alternating lines of spongier weave with a more compact one.

Models wear a creation part of the Etro men’s Spring-Summer 2016 collection, part of the Milan Fashion Week, unveiled in Milan, Italy, Monday, June 22, 2015. Milan designers continue to blur the lines between female and male dressing, to various degrees. For some it is experimentation with textiles, but others are challenging to the core long-held assumptions about what best suits men and women.

Milan designers blur gender linesMILAN — Milan designers continue to blur the lines between female and male dressing, to

various degrees. For some it is experimentation with textiles, but others are challenging to the core long-held assumptions about what best suits men and women.

CleanKean Etro’s looks for next sum-

mer were clean and contemporary, anything but the bohemian and ethnic attire often associated with Etro.

Etro chose female fabrics for the men’s line, continuing the Milan trend of exploring the lines between genders, and maintained a sharp silhouette.

“You see no lapels, no but-tons, no nothing, everything is super clean even the prints, only egg shapes,” Etro said before the show.

The deployment of Etro’s fa-miliar paisley was understated and any tribal touches were reserved for linings of the garments, not for outward display.

Etro revamped its showroom into a circle, and at the end the designer joined hands with the models in an outward-facing circle as a tree grew up on the screen be-hind them. Sustainability is in the air during the Expo 2015 world’s fair, which is in its second month and continues until Oct. 31.

Nothing is what it seems at Fendi. The runway appears to be a drying stream bed, but it is actually

an effect achieved with resin. And Silvia Venturini Fendi continues her sleight of hand throughout the menswear collection for next spring and summer.

The python peacoat is in real-ity a technical fabric treated for a shadow effect; the yellow rubber raincoat is actually fine leather and reversible nonetheless. And the tweed coat is in truth stamped cotton with a granite effect.

The looks were disciplined and well-proportioned, but relaxed with few suits and no ties. The line fo-cused on mixing materials: a silky shirt with suede jacket and jersey knit pants for a comfortable walk. There were also pebbled prints on super-light-weight matching shorts and button-down tops.

Fendi’s colors were inspired by a coastal storm, from the frothy white, sand, slate blue, gray and black palette to the pebbly prints.

Bags included satchels and backpacks, some with doll-size backpacks attached, and offered also in pebbled finish or studs creating ethnic patterns. The Fendi bag bug of the season is a fuzzy white smiley face. (ap)

One of the tray craftsmen, I Wayan Konten, revealed on Wednesday (Jun. 24) that initially the handicraft business is very promising, and even becomes the main business they do. The result is very good to support daily needs of his family. However, since recent years, the business of making tray craft has proliferated. Under this condition, the competition is increasingly fierce among producers. They are vying to rake a number of collectors ending in different prices on offer. This makes collector purchase from craftsmen that can offer the lowest prices. As a result, craftsmen setting standard price are gradually abandoned by buyers.

“This business was very promis-ing. Since the presence of difference in prices at each craftsman, a number of craftsmen having set a standard price are increasingly abandoned by buyers,” he said.

Konten added that such unfair price competition often makes his business almost go bankrupt. Since six months ago, his income has decreased about 25 percent. “My income started to decrease since a few months ago. It remains gross sales,” he explained.

The matter of different price, added

GIANYAR - There is something interesting at the opening of the Batuan Village Art and Games XVI scheduled on Saturday (Jun. 27) at Yudhisthira Square, Batuan village, Sukawati. Unlike the previous one, for the first time at the opening pa-rade will be staged a fragmentary show entitled Jayeng Baturan. This semi-colossal show is taken from the Batuan Chronicle believed to contain sacred values ??by local customary villagers.

According to Deputy Chief of Batuan customary village, Ketut Wastika, accompanied by Chairman of the Art and Games Komang Su-sana, Headman of Batuan I Nyoman Netra and a number of customary village apparatus said on Tuesday (Jun. 23) that the Batuan Chronicle presented in the fragmentary show tells about the origin of aci gocekan and rejang sutri tradition taking place from the sixth to ninth month in Balinese calendar or around Oc-tober to March. Such traditions are adhered to society and still survive to these days. Society believes that the implementation of the traditions is particularly aimed at avoiding disaster at Batuan village.

The Batuan Chronicle tells about the expulsion of I Gede Mecaling from Baturan or Batuan village af-ter losing in a magic fight against I Dewa Babi. I Gede Mecaling then goes to an area called Penida and promises to generate havoc every sixth month. To prevent bad things from happening, it is then held the aci gocekan or cockfight and rejang sutri dance tradition.

“It is said that when implement-ing these traditions, I Gede Mecal-ing will really get amazed and dis-solved with the charms of cockfight and rejang sutri dance so that he forgets his threat,” he said.

Wastika said that the Jayeng Baturan fragmentary show is taken

from the Batuan Chronicle that previously was once performed in the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) 1990. Having been inactive for long time, the fragmentary show is now re-staged as an effort to remind people about the Batuan Chronicle, including the potential owned by Batuan village.

The fragmentary show involves 150 artists of Batuan and sur-rounding areas, like I Wayan Gita Purnama, Wayan Suarsana, et al as gamelan musician, I Nyoman Bu-diarta et al. as choreographer and I Ketut Wirtawan as puppeteer. Other than fragmentary show, it is also staged Pendet Dance by involving 51 dancers and other arts. (ded)

Unfair competition in price, dulang craftsmen turn sluggish

BANGLI - A number of dulang or tray craftsmen at Tegalasah hamlet, Tembuku subdistrict have been confused since the past few months. Due to unfair price competition, the business becomes slow and their income drops dramati-cally. Actually, it is the only business being able to support their life.

Konten, does not only have an impact on his income. However, it is also con-sidered to be able to make the others’ business go bankrupt. Responding to this problem, he and some other crafts-men claimed to have delivered to the Bangli Industry and Trade Agency.

“I have conveyed this problem to the Industry and Trade Agency in order to ask for a solution, but it is still like this. If possible, all the craftsmen must be gathered. Give them direction,” he asked. He added that his business has also been made sluggish by the increase in the price of timber occurred since a few years ago. Besides, the price of paint also increases. It is very difficult to get around this problem because the price of tray remains unchanged, while he does not dare raise the

prices. He worries if the buyers will leave him.

“With the current price of my tray, I am frequently unable to sell it, let alone be raised. Buyers will surely go away,” he said.

Another craftsman in the same boat with Konten is Desak Areni. She dis-closed that her business has been slug-gish since six months ago. Typically, the demand will increase ahead of Galungan. But before this Galungan, the sales drop dramatically. Other than kindled by unfair price competition, it is also kindled by proliferation of tray craftsmen at her village. “Today, we increasingly lack of buyers. Ahead of holidays, the demand is precisely down. Perhaps, it happens due to pro-liferation of similar business today,” she said. (kmb45)

The latest revelations of espio-nage among Western allies came af-ter it emerged that the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) had spied on Germany and that Germany’s own BND intelligence agency had cooperated with the NSA to spy on officials and companies elsewhere in Europe.

“President Obama reiterated un-equivocally his firm commitment ... to end the practices that may have happened in the past and that are considered unacceptable among allies,” the French president’s office said. Hollande had earlier held an emergency meeting of his ministers and army commanders and the U.S. ambassador was summoned to the foreign ministry.

“France will not tolerate actions that threaten its security and the protection of its interests,” an ear-lier statement from the president’s office said, adding it was not the first time allegations of U.S. spying on French interests had surfaced.

A senior French intelligence official will travel to the United States to discuss the matter and strengthen cooperation between the two countries, Hollande’s office said. “We have to verify that this spying has finished,” Stephane Le Foll, government spokesman, told reporters, adding that ministers had been told to be careful when speak-ing on their mobile phones.

While Paris and Washington have good ties in general, U.N. Se-

curity Council veto-holder France fiercely maintains its independence

on foreign policy and over the last two years there have been mo-

ments of friction and irritation on both sides.

Hollande was disappointed by Obama’s last-minute decision not to strike Syrian government posi-tions in 2013. U.S. officials have frequently, in private, criticised France’s tough stance in talks over

Iran’s nuclear programme.

MORE DOCUMENTS TO COMEThe revelations were first report-

ed by French daily Liberation and on news website Mediapart, which said the NSA spied on presidents Jacques Chirac, Nicolas Sarkozy and Fran-cois Hollande during the period of at least 2006 until May 2012. Accord-ing to the documents, Sarkozy con-sidered restarting Israeli-Palestinian peace talks without U.S. involve-ment and Hollande feared a Greek euro zone exit back in 2012.

Wikileaks said it would soon publish more details on the nature of U.S. spying on France. Le Foll said Paris had not decided whether to launch legal proceedings as Ger-many had done but, amid calls from some quarters for retaliation, played down diplomatic consequences.

“In the face of threats that we face and given the historic ties link-ing us, we have to keep a perspec-tive,” he said. “We’re not going to break diplomatic ties.”

Germany’s top public prosecutor closed a year-long probe earlier this month into the suspected tapping of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s cell phone by U.S. spies.

Claude Gueant, Sarkozy’s for-mer chief of staff and one of the reported targets of the NSA, told RTL radio: “I feel like trust has been broken.”

The documents, which included the cell phone of one of the presi-dents, included summaries of con-versations between French officials on the global financial crisis, the future of the European Union, ties between Hollande’s administration and Merkel’s government. (rtr)

SEOUL — North Korea says it has succeeded where the greatest minds in science have failed. The authoritarian, impoverished nation better known for pursuing a nuclear program despite global criticism announced Friday it has a drug can prevent and cure MERS, Ebola, SARS and AIDS.

The secretive state did not pro-vide proof, and the claim is likely to provoke widespread skepticism.

The official Korean Central News Agency said scientists developed Kumdang-2 from ginseng grown from fertilizer mixed with rare-earth elements.

According to the pro-North Ko-rea website Minjok Tongshin, the drug was originally produced in 1996.

“Malicious virus infections like SARS, Ebola and MERS are diseases that are related to immune systems, so they can be easily treated by Kumdang-2 injection drug, which is a strong immune reviver,” KCNA said.

North Korea shut out foreign tourists for half a year with some of the world’s strictest Ebola controls, even though no cases of the disease were reported anywhere near the country, before lifting the restric-

tions earlier this year.It is believed to be struggling to

combat diseases such as tuberculo-sis, and respiratory infections are among its most common causes of death, according to the World Health Organization. North Korea trumpeted the same drug during deadly bird flu outbreaks in 2006 and 2013.

The North’s claim comes as rival South Korea fights an out-break of MERS that has killed two dozen people and sickened more than 160 since last month. There is no vaccine for the dis-ease. (ap)

Obama reassures France after ”unacceptable” NSA spying

PARIS - U.S. President Barack Obama reaffirmed in a phone call with his French counterpart Francois Hollande on Wednesday Washington’s commitment to end spying practices deemed “unacceptable” by its allies. The presidents’ conversation, announced by Hollande’s office, came after transparency lobby group WikiLeaks revealed on Tuesday that U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) had spied on the last three French presidents.

SINGARAJA - More and more people are getting involved in freshwater aquaculture at Bebetin village, Sawan subdistrict. At this village farmers apply the concept of paddy-cum fish culture. This con-cept is run by cultivating freshwater fish in the pond of paddy fields hav-ing been planted with paddy. With these supporting natural resources, farmers turn optimistic that the aquaculture will provide benefits and increases their income.

The paddy-cum-fish program at Bebetin village has received great support from the Buleleng Fisher-ies and Maritime Resources. On Wednesday (Jun. 24), the Buleleng Fisheries and Maritime Resources have restocked 12,000 heads of freshwater fingerlings at Subak Manuk Sesa, Bebetin village. The fingerlings are allocated to 22 farmers denoting the members of Munduk Sari Group. The fish

restocking was attended by the Head of the Buleleng Fisheries and Maritime Resources Nyoman Sutrisna, and Headman of Bebetin I Ketut Laksana.

The Head of Munduk Sari Group of Subak Manuk Sesa, Ketut Guna Kaya, said that the initial idea of paddy-cum-fish culture was seeing the potential of paddy field with endless irrigation that was so sup-portive. All this time, he and his colleagues rely solely on rice crops. To increase revenue and meet the consumption need of fish, he then tried the freshwater fish cultivation. After trying, in fact the aquaculture gives quite satisfactory results. At local village, there has been a hatchery pond, so that it supports the paddy-cum-fish culture run with dozens of colleagues.

“His paddy field is irrigated throughout the year so that it very much supports to be used for culti-

vating freshwater fish. Moreover, at the village there has been a hatchery pond, so that it is beneficial for us,” he said.

Guna Kaya added that the pad-dy-cum-fish program he started also gets the attention from the Buleleng Fisheries and Maritime Resources that has helped with 12,000 fingerlings. By all means, the fingerling assistance will in-crease the asset he currently man-ages. To that end, he is determined to raise the fingerlings in order to produce as expected. Besides, he hoped that local government will not leave after helping farmers with the fingerlings, but still help get a market access.

“We have confidence that this fingerlings will bear results. Hope-fully, the marketing of fish product will also be helped, so that other than for self-consumption of villag-ers, the remaining can be sold to add

family income,” he said.Nyoman Sutrisna said that

the paddy-cum-fish culture has become one of the government programs to improve fish con-sumption in the community. Ad-ditionally, this program is meant to increase income of farmers other than from planting rice, but also from the sale of freshwater fish produced. To that end, local government as directed by the Regent of Buleleng Putu Agus Suradnyana will continue to boost fingerling assistance by targeting other villages having potential to cultivate freshwater fish with the paddy-cum-fish concept.

“The paddy-cum-fish will con-tinue to be encouraged as directed by the leadership. Besides, this program has produced a lot and our farmers already got additional re-sults from fish aquaculture. To that end, we will continue to boost with

fingerlings and assistance through PPL,” he said.

Similar opinion was disclosed by the Headman of Bebetin, I Ketut Laksana. He said that the vivacity of his residents to cultivate fresh-water fish is increasingly higher so that he is confident that this effort will provide additional results for farmers at his village. To that end, his party still appealed his residents to persistently manage their business well. Should there be any problems faced, he suggested asking for help to technical agency so that the business can be running optimally.

“It is very supportive and the coaching has been given so that it is very helpful for farmers. We will encourage and ask farmers to keep trying and never hesitate to ask for assistance in case of facing obstacles. By that way, the business will run,” he said. (kmb38)

BANGLI - Craftsmen of wooden crate at Suter village, Kintamani, are now beginning to increase the capacity of their production. It is done to meet the surge in demand ahead of the arrival of the tanger-ine harvest season in a few months away.

Based on field observation on Wednes-day (Jun. 24), a number of craftsmen at Suter were very busy producing wooden crates commonly used to hold tangerine. Moreover, at one of the production sites at roadside, some children were also seen to make wooden crates while filling in their school holidays.

One of the wooden crate craftsmen at Suter, Gede Purasta, said that the wooden crates he makes are usually used by farmers and collectors to hold tanger-ines. The wooden crates are made from local tree named blalu or albizia.

As usual, with the help of some labor-ers he can produce 120 wooden crates each day. Since few days ago, he has produced 240 crates each day. He added that when harvest season comes, the number of wooden crates produced will considerably increase. “During harvest season, we commonly produce up to 600 crates each day,” he said.

In the meantime, the selling price of wooden crate with the capacity of 30 kg is IDR 11,000, while the one with capac-ity of 50 kg is sold for IDR 15,000.

Considering the price of raw material is increasingly high this time, he claimed to worry if he stocks wooden crates in too larger number. If wooden crates are kept too long, it will cause the wood to dry so that the crates are easily damaged and unsalable. (kmb40)

An estimated 41.9 million people will travel 50 miles or more from home during the holiday weekend, up 0.7 percent from last year and the most since 2007, right before the re-cession, according to travel agency

and car lobbying group AAA.As usual, the vast majority of

travelers will be using their cars: about 85 percent. Gas currently costs $2.78 a gallon, down 88 cents from the same time last year. That

means a family driving 200 miles on highways will save about $7.30 for their holiday gas this year.

AAA defines the holiday pe-riod as July 1 through July 5. But Americans, in general, are already driving more.

The Federal Highway Admin-istration this week announced that Americans drove 987.8 billion

miles for the first four months of the year, topping the previous record — 965.5 billion — set in 2007. The government said that the nation’s driving has increased steadily for 14 consecutive months.

More folks are going away this July 4 thanks to the better economy and lower fuel prices which give them more disposable income.

However, Independence Day travel predictions are particularly volatile since the holiday falls on a different day of the week each year. Three- or four-day weekends see more travel-ers, typically.

AAA estimates that mid-range hotels this holiday will cost 6 to 8 percent more and airfare is 6 per-cent higher. (ap)

DENPASAR - The 37th Bali Arts Festival (BAF) 2015 on the Parade of Adult Gong Kebyar presented the envoy of Denpasar and Bangli, Sunday (Jun. 21). It was held at the Ardha Candra Open Stage of Denpasar Art Center. Each envoy was supported by its leader, namely Denpasar by Mayor I.B. Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra and Bangli by Regent Wayan Gianyar.

Swadharmita Gamelan Troupe of Cerancam hamlet, Kesiman village, East Denpasar represented Denpasar and envoy of Bangli came with various kinds of properties. They respectively presented Ter-una Jaya Dance, creation gamelan composition, creation dance and fragmentary show. Envoy of Den-pasar put on attires of endek clothes combined with white color.

As the second performance, the Swadharmita Gamelan Troupe taking the position at the north side of the stage presented Teruna Jaya Dance. The dance composed by an artist from North Bali (Buleleng) depicted lively the movement of a man growing adult. It’s emotional and appealing to woman. Though it belongs to male dance, it is danced by woman. It was created by Pan Wadres in the form of Kebyar Le-gong that was then perfected by I Gede Manik.

Next, it featured a creation of gamelan composition entitled “Node” which means dots of tones. It was created by Sang Nyoman Arsa Wijaya presenting the play of sounds in space and time. It came with its own musical aes-

thetic concept. When paired with the rhythm of music, the gamelan composition is like a classic jazz rhythm that further highlights harmonious tones of melancholy without violence.

In the meantime, the creation dance entitled “Ratna Wisaya” is created by I Wayan Juana Adi Saputra featuring the philosophy of amaranth (Balinese: ratna). Refer to Adi Parwa scripture, the flower is interpreted by Hinduism in Bali as a means of worship frequently neglected in front of a shrine to reject negative influences.

As final presentation is the fragmentary show entitled “Coro-nation of Bharata.” The storyline is begun with the return of Bharata and Satrugna from the kingdom of their grandfather. Suddenly, they are surprised by condolence on the death of King Dasaratha. Rama, Shita and Laksamana have been exiled for 14 years due to the demand of their mother Keikayi to King Dasaratha.

Bharata is getting furious like burning fire, but instantly dims af-ter seeing the shadow of Sri Rama soothing him. The body of King Dasaratha is then cremated. After the ceremony is over, and Bharata and the whole palace go to pick up Rama so that he is willing to return to Ayodya and occupies the throne. Rama refuses, but blesses Bharata to become a king and gives his sandals as a symbol that Sri Rama is always at the side Bharata in every step of his tasks as the King of Ayodya. (kmb)

BRUSSELS — Crucial talks be-tween Greece and its international creditors ended without result early Thursday casting fresh doubt over the country’s future in the euro single cur-rency and piling new pressure on nego-tiators to reach a deal later in the day.

After an eight-hour grilling into the night Wednesday, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras left talks in Brussels with the leaders of the three main institutions handling his country’s massive debts without talking to reporters.

Technical experts were due to re-sume their deliberations just after dawn to thrash out the details of Greece’s reform plans and see whether the pro-posals meet the lenders’ loan conditions less than a week before for a new debt payment is due.

Tsipras himself was expected to return to the talks with European and International Monetary Fund officials at 0700 GMT.

Greece has promised mainly tax increases to achieve budget savings, whereas the IMF would like more spending cuts. Tsipras rejected the creditors’ new suggestions, saying they put both sides further away from

a deal.“The Greek side is unable to agree

on such a course,” a Greek government official said after Tsipras had assessed the proposals, which included fresh cuts in public sector payrolls and a timetable to scrap a pension safety net fund.

“These are very tough negotiations,” the official said. “But there is a common will to get somewhere.” The official spoke only on condition of anonymity because the talks were ongoing.

The new roadblock came as some surprise. The finance ministers had been due to meet to iron out details about the reforms in time for European Union leaders to approve at a two-day sum-mit starting Thursday. It appears likely that they will have to work right up to the summit.

Greece has a 1.6 billion euro ($1.8 billion) debt to pay on Tuesday which it cannot afford unless the creditors unfreeze 7.2 billion euros (8.1 billion dollars) in bailout money.

A Greek exit from the euro would be hugely painful for the country. Some experts say it could be manageable for Europe and the world economy, but that remains unclear. (ap)

SEOUL - South Korea on Thurs-day announced a $14 billion stimu-lus package to boost its troubled economy, hammered by the deadly MERS outbreak which has dented consumer spending and business sentiment.

In announcing the 15 trillion won programme -- which follows a central bank interest rate cut to a record low this month -- the finance ministry also slashed its growth outlook for this year.

Finance Minister Choi Kyung-Hwan said the extra move was crucial as a recovery in Asia’s

fourth largest economy hinged on efforts to quickly contain the ef-fects of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome.

As of Thursday the virus had killed 29 people and infected 151 since the first case was confirmed on May 20, making it the worst outbreak outside Saudi Arabia.

“We can say that we have over-come the MERS crisis only if our economy rebounds,” Choi said, warning that growth could come in below 3.0 percent without support from the extra spending.

“The economy is being weighed

down by MERS, which has seri-ously hurt consumption and the service sector,” he said, adding the government would use all available resources to prop up growth, sup-port exports and create jobs.

Choi said the government would issue bonds to fund the extra bud-get, the size of which will be decided after analysing the impact of MERS.

The finance ministry slashed its growth forecast for this year to 3.1 percent from an earlier projection of 3.8 percent.

The ministry said the MERS

outbreak could pare up to 0.3 per-centage point off annual economic growth, vowing to keep close tabs on rising household debt and en-courage corporate restructuring that could reduce risks to the economy.

The slowing global economic recovery and a weak yen and euro are other risks to South Korea, it said.

As part of the package provin-cial authorities will be encouraged to spend more on infrastructure projects, while it will also be used to help contain MERS, address the

effects of a severe drought and cre-ate more jobs.

The central Bank of Korea cut interest rates this month to a re-cord low 1.5 percent as businesses including shops, restaurants and cinemas reported a slump in sales.

South Korea’s exports fell 10.9 percent from a year earlier in May, shrinking for the fifth consecutive month.

The ministry forecast this year’s exports would fall 1.5 percent from a year ago. It also lowered its inflation outlook to 0.7 percent. (afp)

In contrast to the other types of barong, Barong Brutuk does not take the shape of animals, but in-stead resemble a human being. The appearance of the Barong Brutuk remains very primitive as only the most rustic of materials are used for its attire.

Barong Brutuk’ clothes and orna-ments are made from kraras (a type of dried banana sheath fiber weav-ing). Chains of the dry banana leaf are formed to resemble tassels worn around the neck and at the waist. The dry banana leaf fiber used for the Barong Brutuk, are made specifically from banana tress from the area of Pinggan village. The vil-lages of Trunyan and Pinggan have special historical ties. Before seek-ing out the dry banana leaf, Trunyan vellage heads will write a letter

requesting permission asking Ping-gan village if they can come search for the dry banana leaves that will be used for the Brutuk. Meanwhile, the mask for the Barong Brutuk is made from coconut shell. Though its expression remains very primi-tive, the mask of the Barong Brutuk has its own magical aura. This aura is maintained by storing the mask in the main chamber of the village’s Pancering Jagat Temple. In addition to using dry banana leaf ornaments and a coconut shell mask, the Bar-ong Brutuk dancers also smear their bodies with mud taken from a place named Song Rerindi.

Since it is a sacred, the dance is only performed on particular days. Typically, it is presented on the full moon in October at Pan-cering Jagat Temple. During the

performance, the Barong Brutuk carries a 20 Meter long whip made from hibiscus bark. The Barong Brutuk dancer circles Pancering Jagat Temple, while swinging its whip. Residents who stand neat the temple during this ceremony, will be whipped by the Barong Brutuk.

Secretary of Trunyan village, Ketut Jaksa, said that according to local beliefs, the whip holds certain powers. The whip swung by Barong Brutuk is believed to be a pangenteg bayu or energy establisher. This is what makes people want to get close to the Barong, so that they can be exposed to the power of the whip. “According to local belief, whoever is exposed to the whip will be cured from their disease” said Jaksa. While chairing a limited cabinet meeting at the Presidential Office on Wednesday, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) stated that the slowdown in the national economy should be coun-tered by an increase in the number of tourist arrivals, so that it can support the nation’s economy.

“Even with slow economic growth, the tourism sector can contribute by generating foreign exchange earnings in a relatively short period of time,” the president affirmed.

Therefore, Jokowi called for an increase in tourism promotional activities to attract more foreign and domestic tourists.

“The president has urged the min-ister of tourism to maximize the

country’s tourism promotional activi-ties to attract more foreign tourists to Indonesia,” Chief of the Presidential Communications Team Teten Mas-duki noted.

To increase foreign tourist arrivals, Jokowi has issued Presidential Decree No. 69 of 2015 on free visa travel.

“Actually, several weeks ago, I had signed a free visa policy for 30 countries. I think it will have a positive impact on the country’s tourism indus-try,” President Jokowi remarked.

So far, the Indonesian government has provided a free visa facility to 15 countries. With the new free visa policy being offered to 30 countries, the number of countries receiving the facility has increased to 45.

Tourism Affairs Minister Arief Yahya stated that the free visa policy has become an important step to help Indonesia achieve its target of tourist arrivals.

According to Yahya, the tourism ministry will continue to implement strategic and effective measures to realize the target of foreign tourist ar-rivals and domestic tourist travels that have been set by the government. The Ministry of Tourism has set a target to receive 10 million foreign tourists in 2015, with the sector’s foreign ex-change contribution expected to reach US$12.05 billion, up by about 7-8 percent from that recorded in 2014.

Last year’s foreign tourist arrivals in Indonesia reached 9.3 million, con-

JAKARTA — Volcanic ash from In-donesia’s smoldering Mount Sinabung has blanketed parts of Medan, the provincial capital of North Sumatra, forcing residents to wear masks.

The head of the local disaster mitigation agency, Subur Tambun, said Wednesday that smoke spewing from the mountain was being carried by winds toward Medan. So far, the ash fall is not seriously disrupting daily life, he said, including flight opera-tions at the city’s airport.

Medan with a population of 3.4 mil-lion is Indonesia’s third-biggest city after Jakarta and Surabaya.

TV footage showed ash blanketing parts of the city which is about 50 kilometers (31 miles) northeast of the mountain.

According to the Sinabung monitoring post, there were seven hot ash avalanches Wednesday that slid up to 3,500 meters (10,500 feet) southeastward. The ash cloud billowed 2,000 meters (6,560 feet) high.

The 2,460-meter (8,070-foot) volcano has spewed hot lava almost daily since its alert status was raised early this month to the highest level. More than 10,300 villagers whose homes are in the danger zone have been evacuated since then to safer areas.

AMBON - The Immigration Office of Ambon, in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), will deport some 300 fish-ermen to their country of origin, Myanmar. The identification of the immigrants was conducted on June 23 with the cooperation of the Embassy of Myanmar in Indonesia, Head of the Ambon Immigration office Nanang Koesdarjanto stated on Thursday.

“The Myanmar embassy’s staff came to Ambon after being contacted by the Myanmarese fisher-men who required documents to return to their home country,” he noted.

The embassy sent its staff to gather data from the immigrants to prepare their travel documents. When the documents are ready, they will immediately be deported to Myanmar with the assistance of the IOM, the Ambon immigration office chief stated.

The immigrants are crew members of ships that are currently docked in Ambon.

They want to return to their country, as they are now practically jobless since their ships can no longer sail for fishing after the Indonesian govern-ment declared a moratorium on issuing licenses for foreign fishing ships in November 2014.

The number of foreign fishermen stranded on several remote eastern Indonesian islands has spiraled to four thousand, according to media reports.

Many are migrant workers abandoned by their boat captains after the government passed the mora-torium, the media said quoting the IOM. (ant)

Tourism expected to boost economic growth

JAKARTA - The Indonesian government is developing its tourism sector in a bid to improve the country’s economy, which is facing a slowdown amid the glooming world economy.

tributing US$10.69 billion in foreign exchange to the state.

Therefore, through the implemen-tation of this policy, the minister is optimistic that Indonesia will attract an additional one million visitors. After all, 9.3 million foreign tourist arrivals were recorded last year, which was relatively smaller as compared to 26 million arrivals in Malaysia and 29 million arrivals in Thailand.

The Ministry of Tourism has urged tourism operators to improve their services and human resources, includ-ing industries involved in Meeting, Incentives, Conference and Exhibition (MICE) activities.

Director of the Tourism Ministry’s MICE and Special Interest Promotion Affairs Rizki Handayani stated that the MICE industry has been improving from year to year in terms of quantity,

quality, and organizing firms, among others.

Indonesia will also conduct pro-motional activities in the Middle East in order to increase the number of its foreign tourist arrivals, according to Minister Yahya. The government is serious in seeking to draw more tourists from the Middle East, he emphasized.

Last year, the number of visitors from the Middle East grew 26 percent to reach 170 thousand. Generally, visitors from the Middle East arrived in family groups and stayed for a rela-tively longer period of time. “They are also bigger spenders, with each person on an average spending from US$1.4 thousand to US$1.7 thousand per visit as against around US$1,140 per visit by visitors from other regions,” he added. Many of the 180 MERS cases in South Korea, which make up the largest outbreak of the dis-ease outside Saudi Arabia, were caught from sufferers encoun-tered in emergency wards before they were diagnosed, during a wait for hospital places.

The difficulty of tracing those who thronged the wards made it harder to find people who needed to be isolated for sus-pected exposure to the disease, ministry official Kwon Deok-cheol said.

“This issue has been raised as one of the biggest problems, as we looked at the trend of the MERS outbreak,” Kwon, the ministry’s head of health care policy, told a news briefing. Hos-pitals are now required to keep a

record of all patients and family members as well as ambulance workers and the time of their visits, the ministry said.

On Thursday, the ministry reported two more deaths from the disease, taking the toll to 29, besides reporting one new case.

Most of the deaths have been among elderly patients or those already suffering illnesses. There are 77 people still being treated in hospital, the ministry said.

The emergency ward at a pres-tigious Seoul hospital run by the Samsung Group had become an epicentre of the outbreak after a 35-year-old patient waited nearly three days for a bed while nearly 900 patients, their families, and other visitors, as well as hospital staff, went through the ward.

The health ministry has prom-ised to change the practice of pa-tients and their families waiting in emergency rooms for beds to become available.

Kwon declined to say if the new measure aimed to discourage patients and their families from visiting emergency wards, but said the ministry was reviewing a more permanent legal approach.

On Wednesday, the ministry said the outbreak was at a cross-roads, backing off from an earlier assessment that the spread of disease had levelled off.

On Thursday officials said they were monitoring more than 2,000 people who had been in another Seoul hospital with a patient who was later confirmed as MERS positive. (rtr)

BUJUMBURA — Burundi’s second vice president says he has fled the country fearing for his life after opposing the president’s controversial bid for a third term that has sparked off violent protests in the capital in recent weeks.

Gervais Rufyikiri, believed to have taken refuge in Brussels last week, said in an interview on Radio France International aired Thursday that he has not officially resigned.

In a Twitter posting, the presi-dential adviser for information and media Willy Nyamitwe con-firmed Rufyikiri had fled.

Rights activists say at least 77 people have died in streets protests against President Pierre Nkurunziza’s bid for a third term in office in the July 15 presiden-tial elections.

Critics say Nkurunziza’s push for a third term violates the two-term limit for presidents set by the constitution. (ap)

BEIJING — An early morn-ing fire killed 13 people in an apartment building in central China on Thursday, state media said.

The fire erupted on the ground level of the seven-story build-ing in Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan province, but did not spread far on a rainy night, China Central Television reported. It said the deaths occurred on the top floor, meaning the victims likely died from carbon monox-ide poisoning.

Multiple people were hospital-ized with burn injuries, the broad-caster said. The Zhengzhou No. 1 People’s Hospital confirmed that four people were under urgent medical treatment for burns. The TV network said the cause of the fire was not known.

Many apartments in China are not properly maintained, and haphazard remodeling projects can leave behind safety hazards such as improper wiring, bad ventilation and the removal of supporting struts. (ap)

HANOI — Vietnam’s rub-berstamp National Assembly on Thursday approved the con-struction of a new international airport by 2025 to accommodate growing tourism to the commu-nist-ruled country.

The assembly overwhelm-ingly passed a resolution for the planned Long Thanh Inter-national Airport to be built just outside the southern commercial hub of Ho Chi Minh City.

The government said in a statement that the new airport will relieve the load on Tan Son Nhat airport and will be built with the aim of becoming a re-gional hub for airlines.

The airport will eventually have the capacity to handle 100 million passengers and 5 million tons of cargo a year and will cost $16 billion. Its first phase will handle 25 million passen-

gers a year and be completed by 2025.

The cost will be financed from the state budget and from selling shares in state-owned aviation companies, as well as develop-ment aid and other sources, the government said.

The capacity of Tan Son Nhat is 18 million passengers a year, and the government says 22 mil-lion used the airport last year. Expanding the airport is not considered feasible, although some aviation experts argue that can be done by taking back a golf course which lies adjacent to the airport.

The government says once Long Thanh becomes opera-tional, it will handle mostly international flights while Tan Son Nhat will be used for most domestic flights and some inter-national flights. (ap)

It’s the second day of in-season running that Rosberg has done this season, following his day driving at the post-Spanish GP test in May, while Hamilton has not been pres-ent at either test.

“It definitely helps me being in the car today, but Lewis is going to take the same set-up, so it’s just that I’ve done the job for both of us,” Rosberg said.

“It’s the team that learns the

most out of the day, but of course I learn a few bits and small things, which are always useful.” Rosberg completed 117 laps, despite a gearbox issue just before lunch, as Mercedes worked on set up for the forthcoming British Grand Prix at Silverstone. “The gearbox issue didn’t cost us any time because there was time to fix it over lunch,” Rosberg added.

“It was an intense programme,

but we got through everything and we learned a lot of things. “We prepared for Silverstone so drove a stiff car to specifically prepare for that race, so that was good information. “Other than that, the programme just involved trying some mechanical things. “I’m looking forward to Silverstone. The car is going to be great as fast corners are the specialty of this car.”(net)

LONDON - Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki reached the quarter-finals of East-bourne’s Aegon Championships with a topsy-turvy defeat of Svet-lana Kuznetsova on Wednesday. The Dane surrendered the first set after leading 5-1 but recovered to win 6-7(3) 6-3 6-1 as Kuznetsova faded.

Despite taking charge of the match, second seed Wozniacki said she was worried right to the end against the former U.S. Open and French Open champion. “I was 5-1 up in that first set, so when I was 5-1 up in the third set I was thinking to myself that I really couldn’t repeat what happened earlier,” she said.

“I served better as the match went on, tried to take the ball a little earlier.” The world number five plays Andrea Petkovic next at the traditional seaside grasscourt

tournament after the German beat American CoCo Vandeweghe 6-3 6-4. Eugenie Bouchard’s problems continued as last year’s Wimbledon runner-up retired with an abdomi-nal injury when trailing Belinda Bencic 6-4 3-0.

“I was feeling it during the match,” Canada’s Bouchard told reporters. “It just wasn’t smart for me to take a risk, and, you know, potentially be out for a long time.

“It’s something I want to kind of take care of right away.” “I’m go-ing to play (Wimbledon) no matter what, even if I’m on one leg,” added Bouchard, who has suffered a string of early defeats this year.

PARIS — Tour de France or-ganizers have changed the route of the 20th stage of this year’s race following a landslide in the French Alps. At 110.5-kilometers (68.6-miles), the length of the Alpine stage between Modane and l’Alpe d’Huez remains un-

changed, but the famed Col du Galibier is no longer part of the race program.

Organizers said in a statement that following “the closure of the Chambon tunnel because of a land-slide in April,” traffic in the area won’t be restored before the pas-

“This is the most important goal I’ve scored in my life,” said Isla, who is coming off a difficult season with Queens Park Rangers in Eng-land. “For being at home, with the national team, for everything.”

Chile will play the winner of Thursday’s match between Bolivia and Peru. In the other quarterfinal matchups, Argentina plays Colom-bia and Brazil faces Paraguay.

Uruguay, trying to make it to the semifinals for the sixth-straight time, played a man down from the 63rd after star striker Edinson Cavani was shown his second yellow card of the match for apparently slapping Chile’s Gonzalo Jara away from the ball. Television images later showed that Cavani reacted immediately after Jara provoked him by put-ting his hand on the Uruguayan’s behind. Cavani’s first yellow was for complaining with the linesman in the 30th.

Cavani entered the match endur-ing a personal ordeal back in Uru-guay, where his father was detained after allegedly driving drunk and being involved in an accident that killed a motorcyclist.

Uruguay lost another player in the 88th, when defender Jorge Fucile also was sent off for a second yellow. Uruguay players loudly complained to Brazilian referee Sandro Ricci and a linesman, and the game was stopped for nearly five minutes. Uruguay coach Oscar

When a country with a population of 180,000 is victorious over a nation of more than a billion in the football arena, it would normally be classed as a shock. When Guam held off India 2-1 in a June 16 World Cup qualifier, India coach Stephen Constantine was not surprised.

Guam has deepened its pool of players by looking to the United States for professionals eligible to play for the Pacific Island team. Other Asian nations have also benefited

from making use of scattered but eligible players, wherever they may be. India is now considering follow-ing suit.

“People see losing to Guam as an upset, but for me it wasn’t an upset,” Constantine told The Associated Press. “They have 11 well-coached players that are coming from a sig-nificantly higher standard of football than we are playing here.

“I want to try anything that could improve the Indian team,” the Eng-

lishman added. “We have (potential) players in the United Kingdom, the United States and Norway, and if everyone else is doing this then why not do it too?”

In India, however, the debate is academic because government rules don’t allow for the so-called Players of Indian Origin (PIO) to represent India unless they surrender their original passport.

Players of dual nationality are not allowed. This could be one reason

why India is no longer the champion of the South Asia Football Federation. That tournament was last won in 2013 by Afghanistan, a team that included players of Afghan heritage plying their trade with clubs in Germany, Scandinavia and America.

“I am not a politician and there are a lot of complex issues surrounding this,” Constantine said. “My feeling is why can’t we issue them temporary passports while they are in the service of the national team? They are not

given any rights like Indian citizens, just selected for the Indian national team, they are happy and we will give them a temporary passport. “I admit that it is a short-term solution, not the answers to our prayers — which is kids in schools playing football and a strong football culture.” Gary White, another Englishman, was appointed to take over the Guam national team in 2012 and has made significant progress at all levels of development. SANTIAGO - Uruguay bowed out of the Copa America with a bit-ter taste in their mouths after having two men controversially sent off in their 1-0 quarter-final defeat by Chile, their coach Oscar Tabarez said. Striker Edinson Cavani and defender Jorge Fucile were both dismissed in the sec-ond half of a bad-tempered encounter on Wednesday in Santiago.

Cavani’s dismissal looked particu-larly harsh as he responded relatively mildly to provocation from Chile full-back Gonzala Jara. After the dismissal of Fucile near the end of the game, the Uruguayan players lost their tempers, shoved the linesman and came close to blows with some of the Chilean players.

Tabarez joined in the protest and the game was held up for several min-

utes until order was restored. “When things end in red cards for incidents that weren’t even fouls it leaves a bitter taste in the mouth,” Tabarez said. “I would have liked to lose in a different way.”

The coach apologised for leaving his technical area to remonstrate with Brazilian referee Sandro Ricci but said the official was wrong to send off Fucile for a tackle on Alexis Sanchez. “I said to the referee ‘why have you sent off a player who didn’t commit a foul?’,” Tabarez said. “Fucile, it was so clear!

“And with the sending off of Cavani there is also photographic evi-dence that showed what happened and the provocation (from Jara). “I submit to the TV images and photographs. That’s where the truth lies.”

Chile enjoyed 80 percent of posses-sion in a one-sided match but struggled to break down a characteristically stubborn Uruguayan defence until wingback Mauricio Isla scored with less than 10 minutes remaining.

Tabarez said Cavani’s dismissal 20 minutes earlier was a turning point. “When we were down to 10 men obviously it became more difficult because our opportunities for attack were reduced,” he said.

He denied Cavani’s dismissal had anything to do with the player’s state of mind after hearing on Tuesday that his father had been arrested in Uru-guay for his role in a fatal car crash. I think today he (Cavani) was where he should have been,” Tabarez said. “His red card had nothing to do with what happened the day before.” (rtr)

MOSCOW — Fabio Capello survived a crucial meeting of the Russian Football Union’s execu-tive committee on Wednesday amid widespread speculation the national coach would be fired, but faces talks on his future.

Capello’s future with the 2018 World Cup host team has been in

jeopardy after poor results, includ-ing a 1-0 loss to Austria this month that left Russia in danger of failing to qualify for the 2016 European Championship. That led to calls for him to be fired, with Russia’s former FIFA vice-president Vyache-slav Koloskov claiming Capello would be removed at Wednesday’s

meeting.However, RFU acting president

Nikita Simonyan told Tass that Capello remained in his post after the meeting, which was held behind closed doors, and would meet RFU bosses “on the subject of either continuing to work or a separa-tion.” (ap)

STOCKHOLM - Zlatan Ibrahi-movic could be set to turn out for Sweden at the 2016 Olympics after a late equaliser against Portugal in the under-21 European Champion-ship on Wednesday booked the Scandinavians’ ticket to Rio de Janeiro.

Simon Tibbling’s 89th-minute strike earned the Swedes a 1-1 draw in the Czech Republic, a result which sent both sides to the semi-finals as well as securing their Olympic places.

With each team allowed to choose three over-age players

in their 18-man Olympic squads, Zlatan’s name is already top of the list for Swedish fans. The Paris St

Germain striker and senior national team captain has previously said that, although it might be difficult, he would be interested in represent-ing Sweden in Brazil.

“It’s all about how the situation looks at that point but if I have the chance to represent my Sweden at an Olympics, why not?” Ibrahimov-ic told the Sportbladet newspaper earlier this month.

“We’ll have to see how the situation is... but if I’m available, absolutely,” the 33-year-old added. Sweden face Denmark in Prague on Saturday, with Portugal taking on Germany in Olomouc earlier in the day. The final will take place in the Czech capital in June 30. (rtr)

MARSEILLE, France — Mar-seille has reluctantly accepted an offer from Premier League club West Ham for France midfielder playmaker Dimitri Payet. Marseille said in a state-ment “it is absolutely not its intention” to sell Payet but that it was forced to accept the bid after the player’s agent asked for a “colossal revaluation” of his contract.

The French club added it still hopes

Payet will decide to stay in Marseille although he is expected in England on Thursday for a medical. Payet will be-come new West Ham manager Slaven Bilic’s first major signing since he took over from Sam Allardyce.

According to L’Equipe newspaper, the 28-year-old Payet will sign a five-year deal with an option for a sixth worth 15 million euros ($16.8 million) with the East London club. (ap)

Host Chile beats Uruguay to reach Copa America semifinals

SANTIAGO — Chile’s hopes of winning its home Copa America sharply improved with a 1-0 win over defending champion Uruguay on Wednesday. Defender Mauricio Isla scored an 81st-minute winner to lead the hosts to the semifinals of the South American tournament, de-lighting the home crowd and an entire country. Chile dominated the game from the start and Isla finally broke the deadlock with a low shot from just inside the area after a pass by Jorge Valdivia, advancing his team to the tournament’s semifinals for the first time in 16 years.

Tabarez was sent off for leaving the coaches’ box.

“We played a good match consid-ering the opponent we were playing against. We were able to limit (their chances),” Tabarez said. “After we went down to 10 men, things became a bit more difficult because we had fewer chances to attack.” Uruguay was already without Barcelona striker Luis Suarez, who was banned from the tournament for biting Ital-ian Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup last year.

Chile is trying to win the Copa America for the first time and is con-sidered one of the main title favorites thanks to a “Golden Generation” of players that include Valdivia, Arturo Vidal, Alexis Sanchez and Claudio Bravo. It reached the last 16 at the World Cup in Brazil, being elimi-nated by the hosts on penalties.

“Chile played well and beat a very difficult opponent,” Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli said. Chile hadn’t made it to the Copa America semifinals since the 1999 tourna-ment in Paraguay. The last time Uruguay failed to advance past the quarterfinals was in the 1997 tourna-ment in Bolivia. Uruguay had elimi-nated the hosts in the quarterfinals of the previous two editions of the Copa America: Argentina in 2011 and Venezuela in 2007.

Chile attacked from the start at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martinez, with Uruguay relying on its solid

defense and trying to find spaces to counterattack. Although Chile kept possession, it struggled to get many shots on goal.

“It was difficult, we knew what we were up against, we knew that Uruguay is used to playing in these situations, we knew that it wasn’t going to be easy,” said Chile goal-keeper and captain Claudio Bravo. “We had the patience to score, we had the patience to control the game.”

Isla’s winner came after Uru-guay goalkeeper Fer-nando Muslera tried to clear a cross and the ball went straight to Valdivia. The play-maker quickly passed to Isla, who touched it f o r w a r d and fired the low shot through defenders and into the right corner. Chile came into the match with the Copa America’s best offense with 10 goals, twice as many as any other team.

The match happened the same day Chil-ean authorities said Vidal will face ad-ditional charges for insulting police officers after crash-ing his Ferrari while driving drunk last week. He

initially had his driver’s license suspended for four months, but was allowed to stay with the team in the Copa America. Vidal en-tered the quar-terfinals as the tournament’s top scorer with three goals.

(ap)

India loses out as Asia teams turn to overseas soccer talent

C h i l e made it to the

tournament’s final four times,

but not since 1987 in Argentina, when

it lost 1-0 to Uruguay, the Copa America’s

most successful nation with 15 titles, one more than Argentina.

British wildcard Johanna Konta continued her surprise run with another shock, this time the world number 146 knocking over Spain’s Garbine Muguruza, a day after beating world number eight Ekat-erina Makarova.(rtr)

Organizers said in a statement that following “the closure of the Chambon tunnel because of a land-slide in April,” traffic in the area won’t be restored before the pas-

sage of the peloton on July 25.Instead of tackling the Gali-

bier, riders will climb the Col de la Croix-de-Fer in a “stage that from a sporting point of view remains generally unchanged.” The Tour starts on July 4 in Utrecht, Nether-lands. (ap)

Mount Sinabung is one of about 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which is prone to seismic upheaval due to its loca-tion on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc

(ap)

(kmb40)

(kmb45)

(rah)

(ap)

On the other hand, commitment of the government to realize the quality tourism remains in the level of dis-course only and there is no serious commitment to make it happen.

“How will we realize quality tourism when the permit of hotel construction in South Bali is still sold out? In other words, the gov-ernment is unserious to realize the quality tourism. We will be continu-ously stuck in mass tourism and it is very dangerous for the future of Bali tourism,” said a member of Commission IV of the Bali House, Wayan Rawan Atmaja.

The man having a wealth of ex-

perience in tourism field added that the government should change the mindset of tourism development by not selling out licenses of accom-modation in South Bali and may not allow tourism development to be centered in the crowded region. Distribution and dissemination of tourism development, for example, to East Bali and North Bali is abso-lutely necessary. Rather than selling out hotel permits, the government should focus on organizing and reorganizing tourist destinations in Bali and equips them with facilities and infrastructure.

“Do not let it look like today

where many tourist destinations are not well organized, they have inadequate facilities and some road infrastructures to the attractions are damaged,” said this Golkar politi-cian from Nusa Dua.

Separately, Chairman of the Tourist Destination Study Program of the Bali Tourism Institute (STP) Nusa Dua Bali, Luh Yusni Wiarti, said that quality tourism is a process that has implications on all aspects of both products and services, ful-fillment of the needs and expecta-tions of travelers with acceptable price under mutually beneficial contract agreement. It also covers

basic quality determinant such as safety and comfort, hygiene, accessibility, transparency and au-thenticity as well as the harmony of tourism activity considering human and environment.

According to her, the most fun-damental challenges and constraints are whether we have been ready for this quality tourism. Do the whole societies understand about the meaning and importance of quality tourism? In the meantime, the tour-ism awareness must still continue to be encouraged through a variety of counseling and seven charms so that it can touch all levels of society for preparing resources that are compe-tent in the field of tourism.

“On that account, common per-ception of tourism stakeholders is indispensable in order to reach qual-

ity tourism. Joint commitment of all parties concerned is so required and does not only require the real steps of the government,” she said.

The current challenge, she added, is whether all the stakeholders have owned common perceptions on this quality tourism. Furthermore, it needs studying more profoundly whether Bali has been ready to reach quality tourism considering the existing tour-ism supply must undeniably require a return on investment. (wid)

Government unserious to achieve quality tourism

DENPASAR - All this time Bali tourism is sold cheaply and in a mass. Hotels massively make price war by offering low prices to travelers. As a result, Bali tourism becomes a mass tourism, much visited by travelers. But in terms of quality, it is very low where they have ever-declining length of stay.
