Part of his subsequent comfort level had to be explained by his savvy choice of guests. Amy Poehler, his longtime pal and former “Weekend Update” deskmate on “Saturday Night Live” was the first guest of NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers.” His other guest: Vice Presi-dent Joe Biden, who’s a talk show all by himself.

When Biden arrived to join Poehler, it made for a cozy trio. After all, Biden and Poehler have a history of their own, reaching back to his cameo appearance last season on her NBC sitcom “Parks and Recreation.” “Amy really helped

me with the Secret Service,” said Biden, who reported that when he had finished shooting his “Parks and Recreation” scene and was making his departure, the smitten Poehler grabbed a Secret Service agent by the lapels and demanded, “You take care of him!”

Poehler joked that she and Biden now plan to make a film together called “Snakes on a Train.” Then she declared that she was running for president in two years.

But when Meyers asked Biden what his own 2016 political plans might be, he sidestepped the question. He said he had

meant to make a major announcement on the show, but changed his mind. As he explained to Meyers, “Tonight’s YOUR night. So I hope you’ll invite me back.” The premiere of “Late Night with Seth Meyers” (which taped Monday evening for airing at 12:35 a.m. EST/11:35 p.m. CST), represented the final step in NBC’s talk-show turnover.

Meyers, who until early this month was an “SNL” veteran and co-anchor of its “Weekend Update” newscast, is filling the vacancy left by Jimmy Fallon after five years as “Late Night” host. Fallon, of course, moved up last week to be host of “The Tonight Show,” replacing Jay Leno.

NEW YORK — Police say actor Sam Worthington has been arrested in New York City on charges of punching a photographer after the man kicked Wor-thington’s girlfriend in the shin. The 37-year-old “Avatar” actor was arrested on

an assault charge after the confrontation Sunday evening in Greenwich Village.

The Australian actor was released on a desk appearance ticket, with a court date Wednesday. His publicist didn’t immedi-ately respond to an inquiry Monday. It’s unclear whether he has a lawyer.

The photographer, 37-year-old Sheng

Li, was released without bail after his arraignment Monday on misdemeanor assault and harassment charges. A court complaint says Worthington’s girlfriend told police Li followed her on the streets and tried to trip her. Defense lawyer Ronald Kuby says Li was attacked by the couple, not the other way around.

NEW YORK — The monologue jokes were mostly thin and the host seemed stiff delivering them. But jokes about the Winter Olympics that already felt irrelevant, and a few opening-night butterflies for the guy voicing them, could be excused. Soon enough, Seth Meyers seemed to gain control of his inaugural edition of “Late Night.”

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. market revitalization program undertaken all this time is as-sessed to bring in a positive im-pact on traders and buyers around the market.

Even, a number of traditional markets getting the revitalized program have showed a sig-nificant increase in turnover, no exception for Denpasar. For example, the turnover of the Peninjoan Market, Sindu Market Sanur and Renon Market, show an increased growth when the markets are revitalized.

Seeing such condition, Moham-

mad Lutfi, Minister of Trade, prom-ised to continue the revitalization program for traditional markets. His party wanted a balanced com-petition between traditional market and modern market. “We will continue this program to increase the community’s economy,” said Minister of Trade Mohammad Lutfi when met at Nyanggelan Market, Denpasar.

He said the sales growth in the revitalized markets could reach 500 percent. It meant that with clean, neat and well-organized market, people wanted to come shopping. Traditional markets could compete against modern

markets having been feared to vanquish traditional markets. “So, I am confident the revi-talization is a good program and will be continued so the economy of the people of Bali and Denpasar can grow stronger and benefit consumers,” said this former Ambassador to Japan.

Minister Lutfi said the revital-ization program had launched a fund of around IDR 1.9 trillion. His party promised to keep roll-ing out more funds for such a program that had been proved to increase the turnover of traders in traditional markets.

Related to the onslaught of

modern markets, Lutfi said his party would make a program to arrange the balance between the two kinds of market. He believed when all had been done well, then they could work and all would get the benefits. “We want to make the balance of competition and inter-action. This must be developed and empowered in society. With this program, the result will be clearly very well,” he said.

The Mayor of Denpasar I.B. Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra said that Denpasar municipality was also assisted by the Ministry of Trade to revitalize the In-taran Market, Renon Market,

and Agung Peninjoan Market. With the revitalization, the mar-ket turned clean, healthy and well arranged. Another impact was the significant increase of traders’ income. As seen in the Agung Peninjoan Market, before revitalization the turnover was ranging from IDR 2 billion to IDR 3.5 billion per month, while after revitalization it could reach IDR 13 billion to IDR 16 billion per month. “Similarly, the other revitalized market also showed a significant increase in turnover. Even, the increase is very drastic, reaching 500 percent,” said Rai Mantra. (kmb12)

Previously, there was a case of murder against a U.S. traveler in Denpasar. The rampant criminal acts involving foreigners on holiday on the Island Gods have been disturbing the security and comfort of Bali as an international tourist destination.

A tourism expert from the Udaya-na University, Putu Anom, revealed the matter. According to him, the rampant cases afflicting travelers while on vacation in Bali resulted in negative impact on tourism in Bali. “Violent acts and even slash to death, rape against Australian traveler, including an accident causing death while enjoying tourist attraction will truly give a negative image to Bali tourism. They hunger for Bali as a paradise island, but with such a reality Bali even changes into a hell,” he said.

According to him, the bad in-cident afflicting foreigners in Bali would quickly spread throughout the world through cyberspace. Moreover, the number of social networking sites increasingly grew endlessly. This condition indicated

DENPASAr - Foreign citizens killed by violence in Bali are increasingly prevalent. The violence does not only include rob-bery and rape, but also murder. The latest case was experienced by a female traveler from Sweden who was raped at a hotel at Benesari, Kuta, Badung.

the safety and comfort in Bali had been disturbed. “This means the seven elements of the Sapta Pesona or charms are unable to run smoothly. The government, police and military rank should work together with the community to maintain the security of Bali. Indeed, a lot suicidal cases also occurred lately as kindled by various motives, primarily the economic motif to meet the life needs. They want to live a prestigious life, but with a wrong way,” he said.

He said the government should control illegal migration so as not to cause a lot of problems. Dense popu-lation tended to bring in social unrest for the sake of subsistence. So, Bali was then unsafe and inconvenient for travelers. To that end, the law en-forcement officers should take a firm stand. “It is a social phenomenon occurred in Indonesian society. Bali as part of the unity of the archipelago is also affected by this phenomenon signifying the uncontrolled human behavior. Their behavior is like a wild horse out of the cage. Every-thing is berated, either the norms or

ethics without the control of human-ity,” he said.

Chairman of the Indonesian Tour-ism Industry Association (GIPI) of Bali, Ngurah Wijaya, also confirmed that although criminal acts could oc-cur throughout the world, the crime afflicting foreigners in Bali should be given serious attention by the law enforcement officials. “Crime can

indeed happen everywhere, including large states. However, this should get the attention of the government so as not to have negative impact on tour-ism image,” he said.

He argued that many cases afflict-ing foreigners could happen due to proliferation of unlicensed accom-modation. The facilities did not meet safety standards. “Those becoming

the victims of crime mostly stayed at unlicensed villa, boarding house and lodging,” he said.

To that end, he hoped the gov-ernment continued to intensify the policing against the unlicensed tourism accommodation, so that it could minimize the criminal cases primarily against foreign nationals. (kmb27)

It’s the first phone made under a new five-year partnership with Foxconn, the Taiwanese company that assembles products in vast factories in China. Meanwhile, Chen said it will restore the keys in a new phone he termed “Clas-sic.” He said the new Q20 is a response to lackluster sales of last year’s Q10, which has a physical keyboard but lacks the track pad or keys for functions such as go-ing back. He said the company got many complaints about that.

BlackBerry also announced plans to expand its services for businesses needing secure com-munications, particularly in regu-lated industries such as health care and financial services. There are plans, for instance, to go beyond securing just email and messag-ing. It’s part of the company’s plan

to focus on its strengths in busi-ness services. BlackBerry Ltd. strayed from that as it tried to lure consumers with new devices.

The BlackBerry was the domi-nant smartphone for on-the-go busi-ness people and other consumers before Apple introduced the iPhone in 2007, showing that phones could handle much more than email and calls. BlackBerry was slow in mod-ernizing its operating system, and once it did, the much-hyped system flopped. Chen was brought in as CEO late last year after talks to sell the company collapsed. Although he has been credited with turning around Sybase, a data company that was sold to SAP in 2010, Chen has acknowledged that reviving BlackBerry will be his most “com-plicated” challenge.

In the latest quarter, ending

Nov. 30, BlackBerry Ltd. re-ported a $4.4 billion loss and a 56 percent drop in revenue. But the company said it had plenty of cash to engineer a turnaround.

The new partnership with Fox-conn will help reduce much of BlackBerry’s manufacturing costs. Foxconn, known for its manufacturing contract work on Apple’s iPhones and iPads, will jointly design and manufacture most BlackBerry devices and manage inventory of the devices.

Chen said BlackBerry will now target the heavily regulated industries that require greater security. It will simplify its pric-ing and let people upgrade to the latest systems for free this year. It will also offer free services this year for companies that had left BlackBerry for rivals.

NEW YORK — Samsung is banking on people shaping up this spring. The company on Monday unveiled its new Galaxy S5 smartphone, which is set to go on sale in April, along with a pair of fitness-themed watches. And many of the features included on the devices focus on fitness. Considering America’s contin-ued fascination with fitness and fitness products, this is probably a good idea. What Samsung has attempted to do is combine the best attributes of the top-of-the-line fitness trackers currently on the market with those of its own phones and smartwatches.

The S5 and the watches were unveiled at an event at the Mobile World Congress wireless show in Barcelona, Spain. I had a chance to briefly test out all three products in New York on Monday.

The S5 includes a built-in heart rate monitor, pedometer and fitness tracker, though I’m not sure how useful they actually are. For instance, to check your heart rate, you hold your finger over a sensor on the back of the phone — something I can’t imag-ine doing in the middle of a jog. True fitness buffs will probably head straight for Samsung’s Gear Fit smartwatch, which also does all of those things, but in a much

more user-friendly way. Want to check your heart rate? Just open up the app for that and it gives you a reading within seconds.

While many people have be-come accustomed to wearing fit-ness bands either constantly or for their workouts, I think a lot of them would balk at going running with, or perpetually being tethered to, a phone as big as the S5.

It’s worth mentioning too that the Fit Gear is very nicely styled. I have to admit, I wasn’t a fan of Samsung’s first Galaxy Gear smartwatch, because it felt heavy and clunky and was just too big for a normal-sized woman’s wrist. But the Fit solves that problem. It’s thin, light and features a curved color screen. If you don’t mind wearing something like a Fitbit Force or a Nike FuelBand, you won’t mind this product either.

The trade-off is you can’t place or answer a call from the Fit, but it will notify you of things like calls, emails and text messages. There’s also no camera.

Samsung’s new Gear 2 watch also comes with basic fitness features including the heart rate monitor and pedometer. While it’s still too chunky for me, it is significantly lighter and thinner than the original version. Unlike the Fit, you can still place calls from it and shoot pictures and video from its camera.

BARCELONA, Spain — BlackBerry will release a low-cost phone in Indonesia in April and plans a broader release of a phone that restores a beloved row of control keys with a track pad. The Indonesia phone, the Z3, will sell for less than $200 without subsidies, the company said Tuesday. It will later expand to other markets in southeast Asia. BlackBerry Ltd. CEO John Chen said a version with faster, 4G connectivity is planned for the rest of the world “sometime in the future before I die.”

tion in Ubud remains to become a problem. At least, this matter kindles the concerns of German government. Through the transportation institute established by German government, it wants to work together with the Customary Village Communication Forum (FKDPU) of Ubud subdis-trict to reduce congestion in Ubud. It was revealed in a dinner meeting between the German Institute for Transportation and Gianyar Regent Anak Agung Gde Agung Bharata in the Ubud Grand Palace.

Arrival of the entourage was to discuss about the Ubud Traffic Project, denoting an effort to address traffic congestion in the Ubud tour-ist area. A member getting involved in the group was Kadek Gunarta, doubling as customary village ap-paratus of Padangtegal, Ubud, and the element of the FKDPU. Mean-while, the entourage from Germany consisted of Mr. Hans Ulrich Fuhrke, Mr. Devin Maeztri, Graf Nikolaus von Sandizell, Graefin Filipa von Sandizell and the companions like Amir Rabik and Murni Surbakti.

In the meeting was revealed that the FKDPU and the German Insti-tute for Transportation with Gianyar government had conducted surveys and feasibility studies related to the Ubud Traffic Project. Major cause of the congestion problem all this time in Ubud was that many residents and store or shop contractors did not have garage, so they parked their vehicle at roadside. As a result, traveler groups also parked along the roadside, let alone during high season.

Kadek Gunarta said the initial con-cept of the project was to parse traffic congestion in the Ubud tourist area by freeing the roadside from any parking of vehicles. It would be attempted that each customary village to make a parking space in accordance with the agreement of customary village

“All this will need time and process, yet, on time, there will be standards for goods and ser-vices that will enter Indonesia or exported to other ASEAN member nations” the trade min-ister said.

The minister pointed out that one of the sectors that would have a good opportunity for Indonesia is the automotive sector.

This is because Indonesia has a large number of population which is estimated at 240 million.

“I predict Indonesia will be-come the ASEAN automotive center,” Muhammad Lutfi said.

Regarding natural disasters such as Mount Kelud’s eruption

which is feared to affect season-ing products such as chili and onions, he said it would not have impact of national scale.

The onion and chili areas which were exposed to the hot materials of the MT eruption was only about 17 to 20 percent.

“At the same time, farmers in West Java are also harvesting their chili and onion crops,” the trade minister said.

(FKDPU). Furthermore, vehicle own-ers who did not have a garage would be provided with special parking space. Similarly, each traveler group could park at the location or moved directly to destination and the customary vil-lage provided the parking space.

“This concept will also empower the customary village. In addition to getting revenue from the park-ing services, it also increases the tourism sector because tourists can make a visit comfortably,” said Kadek Gunarta.

Meanwhile, large buses would not be allowed from entering Ubud area

and would be provided with special place. Furthermore, they would be served with shuttle bus to the object to be visit. “We will first have to socialize and get approval from all customary villages and support from Gianyar government. After that, this program can be implemented,” he added.

Meanwhile, the German Institute for Transportation, Mr. Hans Ulrich Fuhrke, in the meeting conveyed to be optimistic that the program could work because of high togetherness owned by society in the region in the effort to maintain the continuity of Ubud tourism in particular. Currently,

his party was still making intensive feasibility studies and socialization to seek togetherness.

Regent Agung Bharata welcomed the program and expressed his sup-port to tackle the congestion problem in Ubud, so that the tourist kampong would not be abandoned by travel-ers. “We do not want the number of tourist visit in Ubud to decrease due to congestion. Let’s work together to find a solution,” he said.

To reduce congestion in the tourist area, all this time the local government had tried a variety of ways. Some of them were by installation of traffic

As reported previously, based on the meeting results of the customary village chief throughout Ubud sub-district on February 7, 2014, it had been approved the establishment of the organization named the FKDPU to integrate the perception and realize concrete actions to assist in managing the Gianyar territory and population in Ubud subdistrict. SEOUL, South Korea — The 88-year-old North Korean man stretched his arms out the bus window to grasp the hands of his South Korean sister one final time before the end of rare reunions Tuesday between hundreds of family members separated for de-cades by war and politics.

“Brother, brother, my brother! How can I live without you?” the sister, Park Jong-soon, cried out from the parking lot at the North’s scenic Diamond Mountain resort, according to South Korean media pool reports.

Wiping away tears, Pak Jong Song shouted back: “Stay healthy! We’ll see each other again if we’re healthy.”

That may be wishful thinking. The brief, painfully emotional reunions that ended Tuesday — the first since late 2010 — are unlikely to be re-peated anytime soon. Neither country has ever allowed a second chance for people to meet their relatives across

the border. And while Seoul has long pushed

for more reunions, analysts say North Korea is reluctant for fear that in-creasing their frequency will loosen its authoritarian control and give up a coveted bargaining chip.

The two sets of reunions that started last week, which involved about 750 people from both countries, almost didn’t happen. North Korea had threatened to cancel them to protest annual U.S.-South Korean military drills that began Monday, but allowed the reunions to go forward after high-level talks with Seoul. Analysts say North Korea’s recent charm offensive is motivated by a desire to win outside aid and investment.

The participants had only three days to meet with relatives most of them hadn’t seen since the Korean War ended in an armistice in 1953. Millions of families were separated by that conflict — and now the world’s most heavily fortified border.

Hernandez, referring to the South China Sea’s Scarborough Shoal fishing ground by its Philippine name, said the fishermen had been merely sheltering from bad weather in the area. “We call on China to respect our sovereignty and rights of our fishermen,” Hernandez told a news conference. “These actions, these incidents surely escalates the tension in the area. And this further threatens the peace and security and stability in the region.”

China’s Foreign Ministry re-buffed the complaint, saying Chi-nese ships patrolled the region to protect China’s sovereignty and ensure “normal order”. “China does not accept so-called representations or protests from the Philippines,” spokeswoman Hua Chunying told a daily news briefing in Beijing. “For foreign ships in these seas, Chinese ships have been carrying out nec-essary management appropriately and reasonably,” she added. “We demand that the relevant country earnestly respect China’s sover-eignty, and not provoke any new incidents.” Since the beginning of the year, China has required foreign fishing boats to get approval before entering waters that it a claims as its own.

“SEEKING CLARIFICATION”On Jan. 27, a Chinese coastguard

vessel tried to drive away Filipino fishermen from Scarborough Shoal

by using a water cannon, General Emmanuel Bautista, the head of Philippine military said on Monday. China claims about 90 percent of the South China Sea’s 3.5 million sq km (1.35 million sq mile) waters. The sea provides 10 percent of the global fish catch, carries $5 trillion in ship-borne trade a year and its seabed is believed to be rich with energy reserves.

Taiwan, Malaysia, the Philip-pines, Brunei and Vietnam also claim parts of the sea. Speaking to reporters, President Benigno Aquino said the government would seek clarification from China about “what this incident was all about”. “We are not sure, at this point, if we can call it their standard operating procedure,” the president said. The Department of Foreign Affairs said there were nine harassment inci-dents in the same area last year.

The Philippines has urged ASE-AN to conclude a binding code of conduct with China to avoid ac-cidents and miscalculations in the disputed waters. The Philippines has taken its dispute with China to arbitration under the U.N. Con-vention on the Law of the Sea but China is refusing to participate in the case.

China has rejected challenges to its sovereignty claims and accused the Philippines of illegally occupy-ing Chinese islands in the seas and of provoking tension.

MANILA - The Philippines protested on Tuesday against China’s use of a water cannon on Filipino fishermen in disputed waters of the South China Sea warning that the incident would escalate tension. China’s chargé d’affaires in Manila, Sun Xiangyang, was summoned to hear the Philippines “strongly protest the efforts of China to prohibit Filipino fishermen from undertaking fishing activities in the Phil-ippines’ Bajo de Masinloc”, said Raul Hernandez, the foreign ministry spokesman.

BANGLI - Bangli Health Agency is now planning to develop health tourism. It is undertaken considering that all this time Bangli has abundant potential of herbs and is located in the strategic area of tourist track. “We are still preparing a grand design on the matter and have been assisted by the Ministry of Health in the form of equipment provision for the making of herbal products and the Ministry of Tourism. By that way, travelers can take traditional medicine in Bangli while traveling,” said the Head of Ban-gli Health Agency, I Wayan Sudiana, Sunday (Feb 23).

For the time being, his party was focusing on developing health tourism by providing herbal treatment services in the North Bangli health center at Pengotan village. To support the avail-ability of herbal plants, various plants had been planted at the area of public health center such as patchouli leaf, bay leaf, longevity spinach, phaleria, pencil tree, black seed, Star of Bethlehem, cat whiskers, morinda, aloe vera, areca nut,

violet leaf and some others. The herbal care service had been begun since Au-gust 18, 2012 and been supported by the existence of general practitioners and pharmacists who had got herbal medicine scientification training in Tawangmangu. So far, the herbal medi-cine services provided had been scien-tifically proven to treat diabetes, high blood pressure, uric acid, cholesterol, arthritis and obesity.

Sudiana said the administration of herbal medicine in North Bangli health center would be tailored pursuant to the needs of each patient. Herbal medicine administration was the same as medicine in general where it could be presented in the form of powder or capsules. So far, this method was chosen by those suffering chronic diseases. Meanwhile, he could not give information regarding the tariff of services because it remained in the stage of socialization.

“For the time being, we are still designing services and development to create the showcase of medicinal plants, herbal drink cafe, spa treatment and oth-ers that will be integrated with the tour-ist track in Bangli,” he added. (ina)

Avalanche incident frequently oc-curred in the path of the Apuan-Baturi-ti. So far, the avalanched had occurred for three times since December 2013. Meanwhile, the disaster occurred at this point posed the second time.

As field observation on Monday (Feb 24), the team of the Tabanan Di-saster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) was unable to get rid of the avalanche ma-terials until noon. It happened because the equipment brought to location of avalanche was inadequate. Eventually, it had to be done manually. Ultimately, they asked for the help of heavy equip-ment to remove the chunks of soil with the height of two meters on the asphalt surface. Meanwhile, the avalanche on the cliff in the north of the path had the width of 15 meters.

The road could successfully be cleaned up thirty minutes after using heavy equipment brought in. However, it did not necessarily mean if the road could directly be passed through by vehicles. The officers still had to clean up the soil and other materials. “The

evacuation was hampered due to lack of equipment, and the crews had also dismissed due to rain. After the coming of heavy equipment, the clean up could finally be completed in thirty minutes,” said Chief Executive of the Tabanan Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), I Gusti Ngurah Made Sucita.

Meanwhile, Secretary of Apuan village, Ketut Cakra, when met at the scene said the avalanche was estimated to occur at night around 10:00. At that time, it rained heavily in the area around the site. “Rainy season has lasted since last December. At least, similar avalanche has occurred twice on this cliff. One point is located on the west side or about 10 meters from the cliff avalanche at this time,” he said.

As the aftermath, the avalanche materials accumulating on the road practically hampered the vehicles both motorcycles and cars. The path con-nected Apuan hamlet (Apuan village) to Bangah hamlet and Pacung hamlet to the main route of Denpasar-Singaraja line. (kmb28)

AMLAPURA - Many rivers have not been equipped with bridge on the east ring road of Karangasem. From Amed to Seraya road section, at least there are three rivers that have not been established with bridge.

Against the reality, a legislator of Karangasem House, Iluh Purnaminingsih, asked on Sunday (Feb 23) in Karangasem the attention of the Bali Governor because the road had no bridge so far since it was opened and paved with hot mix asphalt. “People should not be given promises, we need an urgent evidence in the form of infra-structural development such as bridge,” affirmed Purnaminingsih from Bunutan village.

Since there was no bridge, it flooded every monsoon season and heavy rains. Due to great flood, the traffic could disconnect for a few hours because road users did not dare to cross the flood-ing river. Flooding river without a bridge could be very hazardous for pedestrians, large trucks and vehicles transporting travelers.

Actually, said Purnaminingsih, the east ring road was the only road connecting the tourist destination from Amed to Jemeluk, Lean and Bu-nutan to Sukasada Ujung Park. She added other than many rivers having no bridge they were still

narrow as well. They should be widened because the terrain was difficult and narrow. Moreover, they also included steep ascending and descend-ing path as well as sharp bend on hillside.

According to her, the urgent need was bridge. In rainy season, the flood always occurred in the See River, Purwakerti village and Tuba River. As happened on Saturday (Feb 22), the traffic disconnected due to massive flood and people did not dare to cross the river. “Last year, the flood in the Perit River at Seraya having no bridge claimed casualties, namely three students who were going home after saying prayers. They were washed away by flood and killed. At that time, the victims were crossing the river without a bridge, while the road was suddenly crashed by flood from the mountain,” she said. Similar case also occurred in the other river at Seraya where the victim was washed away and killed.

Other than there were at least seven rivers within the road section from Amed to Seraya, the bridge located at the border of Culik and Biaslantang village was also too narrow. Barrier of the bridge was too low so many motorists frequently plunged into the river. “Six years ago, it was promised to widen the bridge, but so far the promise has not been met,” said Purnamin-ingsih. Avalanche, main line of Apuan–Baturiti paralyzes Bali Post

TABANAN - As eroded by rainwater, the cliff as high as 20 meters at Apuan village, Baturiti, avalanched, Sunday night (Feb 23). Although there were no fatalities in the disaster, the avalanche materials hampered the road section on the Apuan-Baturiti line. As consequence, the road access was briefly interrupted for several hours.

DENPASAR - Bali has re-corded a slight increase of 0.88 percent year-on-year in exports to US$486.06 million last year. Small and cottage industries contributed 75.07 percent to the total export earning, according to Trade Department of Bali Province.

The exports of products of small industries were valued at US$164.48 million in 2013 or up 4.75 percent from US$157.02 million in the same period in the previous year.

Exports of products of cottage industries were worth US$200.66 million, down 0.7 percent from the same period in 2012.

Cottage industries accounted for 41.23 percent of Bali’s export earning in 2013, he said adding that other export commodities included plantation, horticulture and fishery products.

The increase also happened in national export, according Trade Minister, Muhammad Lutfi. In-fact, Indonesia has seen relatively high export growth over the past few years, thereby making its economy one of the keys to global growth.

Based on the World Economic Outlook 2011, the International

Monetary Fund (IMF) had fore-cast that Indonesia will be the sec-ond fastest growing nation among the world’s 18 largest economies during the period 2009-2015, he noted.

“The global economy is pro-jected to recover in 2014, as reflected by the rising economic growth of crisis-hit countries and the increasing global trade volume,” he added.

As per data furnished by the IMF, the world output, which was recorded at 2.9 percent in 2013, was expected to increase to 3.6 percent in 2014. Not just developed nations, but also de-veloping countries will record positive economic growth this year, he claimed.

The World Bank had projected Indonesia’s gross domestic prod-uct (GDP) to increase to 5.3 per-cent in 2014, he remarked.

Even if the GDP growth is below 5 percent, similar to what was recorded during the 2009 economic crisis, Indonesia will still recover at a faster pace than the other developing nations such as Brazil and South Africa, he emphasized.

“The economies of the two countries are estimated to grow at less than 3 percent in 2014,” he stated.

Secretary of the Indonesian Farmers Union (HKTI) of Ba-dung Chapter, Ketut Sugiana, said on Monday (Feb 24) that it needed an understanding between users and producers of the agri-cultural commodities. Sugiana added that tourism market ideally performed intense communica-tion with farmers regarding the kind of required commodities. Besides, it should also meet the quality standards.

“For instance, the tourism in-dustry must be able to package and present the typical local fruit prod-ucts in such a way like salad made of local fruits. When the concept of tourism business industry can accept the idea, the formula can be set forth in a permanent regulation. Non-food commodities should also

be given the attention,” he hoped.Besides, the government com-

mitment related to its alignments to farmers should also be optimized. The structure of Bali’s econo-my, said Sugiana, could change through the increase in the contri-bution of the agricultural sector, including the processed products. Farmland conversion was indeed unavoidable. It continuously hap-pened as part of the dynamics of globalization. This former legisla-tor of Badung House expected the regional bylaw on the Detailed Spatial Plan (RDTR) of Badung could be completed, so it obtained the validation inputs and extensive data confirmation of the agricul-ture and land mapping in Badung. Farmland conversion could not be avoided if it was permitted by the

regional bylaw. “Preparation of the detailed

spatial plan should not be incon-sequential. The Badung detailed spatial plan (RDTR) must remain to refer to the sustainable agricul-tural land protection in accordance with the Law No.41/2009 on the protection of the sustainable agri-cultural land,” he said.

He hoped the government to immediately implement the execution of the law, includ-ing the Law No.19/2013 on the protection and empowerment of farmers. In addition, the govern-ment should strengthen the law with regional bylaw, so that there was clarity about the principles, functions and objectives of the agriculture as well as the farmers’ rights. NEW YORK — Ben Bernanke, who stepped down last month after eight years as chairman of the Federal Reserve, is planning a memoir.

Bernanke told The Associated Press on Monday that he will focus not just on the defining moment of his time at the Fed, the 2008 financial crisis, but on the “Great Recession” that followed.

“I want people to understand what we knew, when we knew it, how we made decisions and how we dealt with the enormous economic uncertainty,” said Bernanke, who expects to begin meeting with publishers within the next several weeks.

Bernanke, 60, says he will cover his entire career at the Fed, starting in 2002, when he joined the Board of Governors. He was appointed chair-man in 2006 by President George W. Bush, a Republican, and reappointed four years later by President Barack Obama, a Democrat. A former pro-fessor and head of the economics department at Princeton University, Bernanke is currently a fellow at the

Brookings Institution.Few Fed chairmen confronted such

profound challenges or became so con-troversial. Under his leadership, the Fed invoked all its conventional tools to salvage the economy. Once those were exhausted, Bernanke turned to extraordinary steps never before tried by the Fed.

Besides cutting a key short-term in-terest rate to a record low near zero, Ber-nanke launched a bond buying program that drove the Fed’s balance sheet above $4 trillion to try to accelerate growth and shrink high unemployment.

Bernanke was criticized by some lib-erals — concerned about unemployment — for not doing enough, and by some conservatives — worried about infla-tion — for doing too much. Bernanke said that the “political environment was pretty hostile at times” and noted that in 2011 he was called a traitor by Repub-lican presidential candidate and Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who told a gathering in Iowa that “we would treat him (Ber-nanke) pretty ugly down in Texas.”

“I’d like to be able to explain that it (the Fed’s handling of the economy) was the right thing to do, and,” Ber-

nanke added with a laugh, “to attest to my loyalty to the United States.”

He has spoken about his time at the Fed before; lectures he gave in 2012 at George Washington University were re-leased last year in book form as “The Fed-eral Reserve and the Financial Crisis.”

Last week, the Fed released hun-dreds of pages of transcripts covering its 14 meetings during 2008 — eight regularly scheduled meetings and six emergency sessions that feature Ber-nanke’s comments throughout.

Bernanke said he had not yet started the book, but had been organizing his thoughts and expected to take about a year to finish. He said he will write the book himself, although he will likely have help with research.

Negotiations with publishers will be handled by Washington attorney Rob-ert Barnett, who also represented Ber-nanke’s predecessor at the Fed, Alan Greenspan. The deal for Greenspan’s “The Age of Turbulence,” published in 2007, was reportedly worth more than $8 million.

Bernanke’s previous books also include “Essays on the Great Depres-sion,” published in 2000.

The airline has been battling record fuel costs and fierce competition from subsidised rivals and in Decem-ber said 1,000 jobs would go while warning it faced a half-year loss of up to Aus$300 million.

Its interim result is due on Thursday and the Sydney Daily Telegraph, citing a Qantas source, said the job losses would be much worse as the airline restructures its finances to convince the government it deserves a debt guarantee.

As well as sacking 5,000 staff, the newspaper said Qantas may sell some of its terminals, while The Austra-lian reported it would accelerate the retirement of older planes and defer new orders.

The airline refused to go into details.“There is fresh speculation about what things we will

or won’t announce on Thursday as part of our half-year results. We are not in a position to comment on that speculation,” the flag carrier said in a statement.

“We have said that we will be making some tough decisions in order to achieve $2 billion in cost savings over the next three years, which is a consequence of an unprecedented set of market conditions now facing Qantas.”

Transport Workers Union national secretary Tony Sheldon said Qantas must come clean on its restructuring plans with staff on edge over potential mass sackings.

“Another day, another rumour of massive job cuts and the sale of planes and terminals,” he said.

“Each baggage handler, check-in staff and ramp worker generates a $205,000 return to Qantas above the cost of their employment. Sacking them is like a tradesman sell-ing his tools to pay a one-off bill.”

Qantas has said it faces “immense” challenges and has been lobbying the government to ease limits in foreign investment or provide state intervention to help shore up its bottom line.

Canberra has made clear there will be no taxpayer handouts but has flagged support for a relaxation of the Qantas Sale Act, which limits foreign ownership in the airline to 49 percent, or a possible debt facility.

Qantas chief Alan Joyce argues that the cap is hurting Qantas’s ability to compete by restricting access to capi-tal, particularly against domestic rival Virgin Australia, which is majority-owned by state-backed Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand and Etihad.

Transport Minister Warren Truss on Tuesday said the conservative government was drafting laws to allow Qantas to be majority foreign-controlled while allow-ing a single foreign shareholder to own more than 25 percent.

Turchinov is now nominally in charge of this strategic country of 46 million whose ailing economy faces the risk of default and whose loyalties are sharply torn between Europe and longtime ruler Russia.

Law enforcement agencies have issued an arrest warrant for Yanuk-ovych over the killing of 82 people, mainly protesters — the bloodiest violence in Ukraine’s post-Soviet history — that precipitated him fleeing the capital on Friday after signing a deal with opposition lead-ers to end months of violent clashes between protesters and police.

For months, thousands of peo-ple have been protesting against Yanukovych’s decision to ditch an agreement for closer ties with the European Union and turn to Rus-sia instead. The parliament sacked some of Yanukovych’s lieutenants and named their replacement, but it has yet to appoint the new premier and fill all remaining government posts. Yanukovych’s whereabouts are unknown. He was last report-

edly seen in the Crimea, a pro-Russia area.

Meanwhile, a campaign for May 25 presidential election was formally launched Tuesday, with Yanukovych’s archrival former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko widely seen as a top contender for the post. She was freed from prison on Saturday after spending 2 ½ years there. Her lawyer said, how-ever, that she hasn’t yet declared whether to run.

Turchinov moved quickly to open a dialogue with the West, saying at a meeting with Euro-pean Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton on Monday that the course toward closer integra-tion with Europe and financial assistance from the EU were “key factors of stable and democratic development of Ukraine.”

Turchinov told Ashton that Ukraine and the EU should im-mediately revisit the closer ties that Yanukovych abandoned in November in favor of a $15 bil-

lion bailout loan from Russia that set off a wave of protests. Within weeks, the protests expanded to include outrage over corruption and human rights abuses, leading to calls for Yanukovych’s resigna-tion.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has strongly condemned the new authorities, saying Monday they came to power as a result of an “armed mutiny” and their legitima-cy is causing “big doubts.” ‘’If you consider Kalashnikov-toting people in black masks who are roaming Kiev to be the government, then it will be hard for us to work with that government,” Medvedev said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry criticized the West for turning a blind eye to what Moscow de-scribed as the opposition reneging on an agreement signed Friday to form a unity government and aim-ing to “suppress dissent in various regions of Ukraine with dictato-rial and, sometimes, even terrorist methods.”

BEIJING — The smog is so bad even the statues wear masks. Or at least they do in pictures of a campus stunt that circulated online Tues-day as parts of northern China suffered a sixth straight day of severe pollution. After being cooped inside because of the bad air, a psychol-ogy student at Peking University ventured out to place the masks on campus statues of Spanish novelist Miguel de Cervantes, Communist Party co-founder Li Dazhao and a sage practicing tai chi.

“I was feeling really low, so I came up with this idea,” Jiang Chao said in a telephone interview. Beijing remained cloaked in hazard-ous white pollution hiding much of its skyline Tuesday, despite the announced closures or production cuts at 147 of the city’s industrial plants.

On Tuesday morning, readings of particulate matter known as PM2.5, a key measure of pollution, reached 444 micrograms per cubic meter in central Beijing, according to the National Meteorological Center. The World Health Organization considers 25 micrograms a safe level.

The meteorological center said moderate or severe pollution had persisted in northern China since Thursday, and that it was particularly serious in Beijing and its surrounding area. It forecast that the pollu-tion would continue in parts of eastern, northern and central China until Wednesday evening, when precipitation and wind should help to disperse it.

Ukraine: No new government before ThursdayAssociated Press Writer

KIEV, Ukraine — The Ukrainian parliament on Tuesday delayed the formation of a new government, reflecting political tensions and economic challenges following the ouster of the Russia-backed president. Parliament speaker Oleksandr Turchinov, who was named Ukraine’s interim leader after President Viktor Yanukovych fled the capital, said that a new government should be in place by Thursday, instead of Tuesday, as he had earlier indicated.

AntaraJAKARTA - A senior politician

of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), one of major parties in Indonesia, has denied that the revelation of wiretapping committed against Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo is intended to divert various unfavorable issues hamper-ing his party’s image.

“The wiretapping issue came under the media spotlight after the PDIP secretary general (Tjahjo Kumolo) was asked by journalists at a book launching event after the shooting incident at a National Democratic (NasDem) Party post in Aceh,” TB Hasanuddin said.

The wiretapping issue also has nothing to do with the plan of Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini, noted PDIP cadre, to resign or the purchasing of new troubled buses from China for Transjakarta, said Hasanuddin, deputy chairman of the PDIP’s election campaign team. He further claimed that his party did

not use such an issue for an image building.

Meanwhile, the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) denied involvement in wiretapping cases related to Jakarta’s governor Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and former Indonesia’s President Megawati Sukarnoputri.

“I ensure that BIN did not do that (wiretapping on Jokowi), nei-ther wiretapped on Megawati Su-karnoputri, who is an honorable official,” Head of BIN Marciano Norman remarked after a coordi-nation meeting with Commission I House of Representatives (DPR), on Monday.

With regard to the allegations that BIN had conducted wiretap-ping on Jokowi, who is one of the popular politicians of the PDIP, Marciano noted that he had also urged Jokowi to improve his inter-nal security system to avoid any breach of security.

“I hope that all parties competing in the elections will take care of the

security arrangements of their own internal communities,” Marciano stressed.

Marciano advised all parties to restrict access of classified informa-tion only to internal officials.

“It will automatically nullify any wiretapping attempts from outsid-ers,” he claimed.

Previously, PDIP’s Secretary General Tjahjo Kumolo claimed that they found three wiretapping devices in Jokowi’s official resi-dence and considered them a terror plot against his party.

The wiretapping devices were found in the bedroom, drawing room, and dining room when the PDIP rummaged through Jokowi’s house as a preventive measure prior to the upcoming general elections.

Besides Jokowi’s house, Tjahjo Kumolo also pointed out that the PDIP’s General Chairman, Mega-wati Sukarnoputri, had been spied upon by some unknown intelligence personnel.

The escapees were among 26 immigrants, who were evacuated on Monday night from the southern beach of Kebumen, Central Java, Head of Cilacap Immigration Office’s Surveillance Unit Edy Rohaedi stated.

“They fled the detention house through a window on the upper floor,” he explained.

The escapees’ countries of origin remained unknown but the au-thorities have recorded that they were from countries such as Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh, he pointed out.

According to Imam Perwira, head of Cilacap Immigration Office’s Law Enforcement Unit, the asylum seekers wanted to go to Australia’s Christmas Island to avoid conflicts in their own countries.

Ashroff, a Pakistani immigrant who had lived in Malaysia, ex-plained that he felt insecure in his country, and he had even lost six members of his family due to the prolonged conflict there.

Therefore, along with 25 other asylum seekers, he sailed towards Christmas but the Australian authorities refused them entry into the country’s jurisdiction, he asserted.

“When our boat reached the border of Australian territorial wa-ters, we were intercepted and the Australian officers refused us.”

“They also destroyed our boat and, in return, gave us a lifeboat that could accommodate only 15 people,” he explained in Malay and English.

The lifeboat, with 26 people on board, was then pushed back into Indonesian waters, Ashroff clarified.

The orange lifeboat landed on Kebumen’s southern beach on Monday at 1.00 p.m. local time, and all the passengers were evacuated.

AntaraJAKARTA - Rupiah gained in value against the US dollar

in the opening trade Tuesday on foreign capital inflow to the domestic bond market, analysts said.

The Indonesian currency traded at the level of 11,600 per dollar in inter-bank transaction gaining from the previous level of 11,648 per dollar.

Rupiah appreciation followed an increase in inflow of for-eign capital to the domestic bond market, chief researcher of Trust Securities, Reza Priyambada, said.

Commitments by members of the G20 countries to push-ing up global economic growth contributed to strengthening the currencies of developing countries including rupiah, Reza said.

“Currently, there is no negative sentiments putting pressure on rupiah. That means that it is still safe in a positive area,” he said.

In addition, there is also positive sentiment from Europe, including Britain’s recovery attempts, and improved economic data of Germany, he said.

Chief researcher of Monex Investindo Futures, Ariston Tjendra, said the US dollar tended to weaken after US housing data falling short of expectation.

He said house sales in the United States dropped to 4.62 million units in January from a month earlier.

Immigration hunts for escaped immigrantsAntara

CILACAP - Indonesian immigration authorities in Cilacap, Central Java, continues hunting for the three asylum seekers that escaped from their detention house on Tuesday.

Therefore, any interaction made by Balinese people in international arena should be able to filter out the incoming influences. Moreover, the existing infiltration targeted to damage Bali. “Here, the role of local community is very important. Balinese residents must have a frame referring to the indig-enous wisdom,” he said.

It did not matter if getting involved and the foreign culture came in pro-vided that we were never dissolved and washed away due to foreign culture, let alone forget the culture in the end. “It is not good. Ideally, our national cultural identity must be maintained. If we do not maintain that culture who else does it?” he pleaded.

He said that Bali needed a figure having a good example in the effort to pay attention and protect the indigenous wisdom. Aside from informal leaders, all components should have a sincere spirit, including the legislator. ”To those who want to struggle truly selflessly in preserving Bali, we expect more to keep the cultural spirit of Bali. Los Angeles’s Crawford had 24 points and picked up where he left off in Oklahoma City the previous day, when he made five 3-pointers and finished with 36 points in the impressive victory. Chris Paul had 19 points and 13 assists for the Clippers in his latest return to New Or-leans, and all five L.A. starters and two reserves scored in double figures.

Anthony Davis had 26 points and 11 rebounds for New Orleans. Golden State beat Detroit for the sixth-straight time, win-ning 104-96. Stephen Curry had 19 points, nine assists and eight rebounds, while Klay Thompson scored 19 points for the Warriors, who were again without an ill David Lee but welcomed back Andrew Bogut from a shoul-

who were held to only 33 points in the second half after 63 in the first. Golden State’s reserves outscored Detroit’s 42-15.

Dallas took a 110-108 win at New York, as Nowitzki’s 19-foot jumper hit the backboard, then the front of the rim, bounced up and then fell in as time expired.

Vince Carter scored 23 points and Monta Ellis had 22 for the Mavericks, who blew an eight-point lead in the final 90 seconds but still escaped with a victory. Carmelo Anthony had 44 points and nine rebounds for the Knicks, who have lost six of seven and are a season-worst 15 games below .500.

Reuters LONDON - Former Ferrari race engineer Rob

Smedley is following Brazilian driver Felipe Massa to the Williams Formula One team, where he will take on the new role of head of vehicle performance. Williams said on Tuesday that Smedley, whose radio conversa-tions with Massa during races have made him an F1 personality, would start work before the Bahrain Grand Prix in April.

The Briton had been expected to move to Williams after Massa, with whom he had forged a close working relationship, joined the team from Ferrari at the end of 2013. At the German Grand Prix in 2010, it was Smedley who gave Massa the message ‘Fernando is faster than you’ when Ferrari controversially decided to impose ‘team orders’ to ensure Spaniard Fernando Alonso won the race.

The order, which has gone down in Formula One lore, was devastating for Massa who had been on course for his first win since 2008 - the year before he suffered a near-fatal head injury - but finished second. Massa’s race engineer this year will be Andrew Murdoch, who worked previously with departed Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado.

Williams said Richard Lockwood had also joined the team from Marussia as head of race strategy. Technical head Pat Symonds said the latest appointments reflected the former champions’ determination to move back up the grid after a disappointing 2013 season. Williams fin-ished ninth overall last year with a meagre five points.

“2014 gives us the biggest change to the technical regulations that I have seen in my career, and so it will be important to add further depth to the talent we already have here,” Symonds said in a statement.

NEW ORLEANS — The Los Angeles Clippers extended their impressive run of form with a 123-110 win at New Orleans on Monday, maintaining a three-game lead atop the NBA Pacific Division, thanks chiefly to Jamal Crawford’s 7 3-pointers. The Clippers retained the three-game buffer ahead of Golden State, which put in a strong second-half defensive performance to win at Detroit, while the day’s other key game saw Dallas edge New York when Dirk Nowitzki’s buzzer-beater bounced off the rim then fell in.

“I worked very hard to return as soon as possible and now I am back, playing, helping the team and scoring goals,” the 30-year-old, who returned to action in mid-January after a four-month layoff caused by a knee injury, told the Spanish sports daily Marca. “I had some very tough moments. I think I am coming into the tie in very good condition.”

Real bought Huntelaar from Ajax for 27 million euros ($37.1 million)in January 2009 and he scored a respect-able eight goals in 20 appearances, yet it failed to impress one of the world’s most demanding clubs. Just eight months later, he was sold to AC Milan for 15 million euros after Florentino Perez returned as Real president and cleared out the Dutch contingent

which also included Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder.

Huntelaar ended up spending a season at AC Milan, where he scored seven goals in 30 appearances, before joining Schalke in 2010. Coinci-dentally, Milan and Real met in the Champions League that season but Huntelaar was an unused substitute in both games.

“Madrid is a great club, with fantastic people,” he said. “I arrived during a difficult time for the club in every sense. We were far behind Barcelona but we played a good sec-ond half of the season and closed the gap to the top significantly. “Despite

everything I was focused on playing, on fighting for a place in the team, but they didn’t give me a chance and they left me no option.

“They wouldn’t even let me train with the rest of the squad, they shut me out. I had to leave. So I sought an exit and moved to Milan. “Obviously it wasn’t my objective to leave Real Madrid so soon but that’s football and there’s no point in dwelling on it.” Schalke, eliminated by Galatasaray at the same stage last season, have won six and drawn two of their last eight games but it would still be a huge upset if they could overcome Real, beaten semi-finalists in each of the last three season.

Fourth in the Bundesliga, Schalke were outclassed by Chelsea in the

group stage, losing 3-0 home and away, and needed to a controversial 2-0 home win over FC Basel to sneak through in their last game.

Real, on the other hand, scored 20 goals in the group stage, with a record nine coming from Cris-tiano Ronaldo, and they dropped only two points. They are un-beaten in their last 26 games in all competitions, a run stretching back to October.

However, they have a very poor record in Germany with only one win in 25 previous visits and their 18 defeats included last season’s humiliating 4-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals.

MILAN — Matias Fernandez’s stunning free kick saw Champions League-chasing Fiorentina snatch a 2-2 draw at Parma in a thrilling Serie A match which

also featured three red cards on Monday. Fiorentina remained six points behind third-place Napoli after

an equally magnificent free kick from on-loan Napoli forward Emanuele Calaio rescued a 1-1 draw for

Genoa against his parent club.“We could have managed the game bet-ter, especially in the first half,” Fioren-

tina coach Vincenzo Montella said. “We played well against a difficult

opponent even when we were a man down but the two send-ings off are a pity. “We had a great first half, but we weren’t clinical. We conceded in our best period and then we got nervous, but we managed to rescue the match with our tenacity and strength.” Antonio Cassano fired Parma in front six minutes

from halftime after Amauri’s pull-back was deflected into his

path.Fiorentina drew level two minutes later

when Juan Cuadrado slid in at the back post, slotting home Alessandro Matri’s cross. Former Fiorentina forward Amauri restored Parma’s lead six minutes after the break with a penalty after Nenad Tomovic fouled Jonathan Biabiany. Fiorentina’s hopes of get-ting something from the match appeared to evaporate when Modibo Diakite was sent off for a second booking two minutes later.

However, Fiorentina goalkeeper Neto kept his side in the game with fine saves, including a fantastic double stop to deny first Marco Cassani and then Amauri from point-blank range. And substitute Fernandez struck a stunning 30-meter free kick into the top far corner five minutes from time.

Gianni Munari and Borja Valero were sent off following a stoppage-time brawl. After ex-

tending its club record run of unbeaten matches to 13, Parma was seventh, three points behind

fifth-place Inter Milan in the race for a Europa League spot.

“I’m disappointed to draw because we were jus-tified in expecting all three points,” Parma coach Roberto Donandoni said. “But you have to give credit to the quality of your opponents, like Matia Fernandez’s goal which was an extraordinary free kick. “We made a bit too many mistakes at the beginning, but then the lads did well against

a great team.”

BARCELONA, Spain — Barcelona paid 13.55 million euros ($18.6 million) to Spanish tax authorities on Monday to cover any potential irregularities in its signing of Neymar, all the while maintaining its innocence of the fraud charges levied against it. The Spanish champion said in a statement it paid the “complimentary” amount to cover any “eventual interpretations that could come out of the contracts signed relating to the transfer of Ney-mar. Meanwhile we are convinced of the legality of our initial fulfilment relating to our tax obligations.”

Barcelona’s actions take the price of Neymar’s transfer to more than 100 million euros ($138 million) after the Catalan club initially said it paid 57.1 million euros ($74 million) for the Brazil forward. That sum does not include bonus payments made by Barcelona or the 22-year-old’s salary, meaning his total cost likely exceeds the record-breaking 100 million euros-plus spent by rival Real Madrid on Gareth Bale last summer.

Spanish tax authorities charged Barcelona with fraud on Thursday, alleging it swindled the state of 9.1 million euros ($12.5 million) through payments to varying companies and false contracts. Of the initial transfer fee, Brazilian club Santos received 17.1 million euros ($23 million) while Neymar’s father, who also goes by Neymar, earned 40 million euros ($55 million). The tax authorities considered the amount paid to Neymar’s father as a salary, the club explained.

Barcelona said it “scrupulously” met its financial obligations in signing the player from Brazilian club Santos and it would continue to work with the state authority in the matter.

Neymar’s signing forced the resignation of Sandro Rosell as president last month, after one club member’s petition to learn more about the intricate details of what has become a club-record signing was kept in the dark.

President Josep Bartomeu, who replaced Rosell, said Monday’s figures were the final, transparent sums associated to the deal, despite having said such words previously about the initial 57.1 million euros it paid out.

England manager Roy Hodgson is considering using a psychologist to help his side avoid more penalty heartbreak at the World Cup in Brazil later this year. “I’m not averse to us-ing a psychologist,” the 66-year-old told Sky Sports. “We are considering the possibility of inviting someone with us but I think it’s very important they’re someone who is part of the group. I’m not sure just suddenly shipping someone in to give the play-ers a lecture would work.

England have suffered a miser-able record in penalty shootouts, having been knocked out of six tournaments since 1990 after fail-ing from the spot, including their quarter-final defeat by Italy at the 2012 European Championships, Hodgson’s first event in charge of the national team. Their only success in that period came in a quarter-final win over Spain at Euro 1996, and Hodgson said he was prepared to enlist the help of a professional to help his players prepare, as well as spending time practising on the

training pitch.“I think there’s another pos-

sibility, we should be encouraging players to know their penalty, to practise that penalty. When you practise penalties within your group the goalkeeper knows the players, so maybe we won’t do it with a goalkeeper.

“It’s a matter of how we assure ourselves that when those players go up they are as well prepared as they can be. In the final analysis it will be their character, their confidence and their ability to block out tomorrow morning’s headlines.”

“Some players are good at that, other players find it harder. If a psy-chologist can find a way of getting a player to block that out we’ll be very, very happy.”

Hodgson has also invited Dave Brailsford, the man who helped grow British cycling into a global force, to speak to his players, most likely ahead of England’s friendly against Peru on May 30. England have been drawn alongside Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica in Group D in Brazil.

BARCELONA, Spain — Goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo saved a stoppage-time penalty to preserve Villarreal’s 2-1 victory at Espanyol in the Span-ish league on Monday. Asenjo dove correctly to his right to deny Sergio Garcia’s spot kick after Villarreal defender Gabriel Armando handled inside the area.

Villarreal led 2-0 by the 50th minute at Cornella El-Prat Stadium, start-ing with teenage midfielder Matias Nahuel picking out Moises Gomez’s run into the area before Jeremy Perbet doubled the advantage by scoring from a through ball into the area.

Espanyol cut the advantage in half in the 77th after Jhon Cordoba powered home a low shot, but Asenjo’s late heroics ensured Villarreal kept pace with fourth-place Athletic Bilbao for the league’s last Champions League qualifying place. Villarreal trails Athletic by four points. Espanyol stayed 10th.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has gone on to become one of the Bundesliga’s most prolific strikers since

One of them is reflected in the cultural tourism product. Let’s fight together and return Bali to the original and sustainable identity. Bali must not be built artificially like through reclamation plan at Benoa Bay. Let Bali be natural as its original purity,” he added. (dgk)

Bali PostGIANYAR - So far, the conges-

tion in Ubud remains to become a problem.

DENPASAR - The ASEAN free market is like rain which will bring not only advantage but also disadvantage if it is not managed properly, a cabinet minister said.

ment has taken concrete steps in the face of the ASEAN free mar-ket that will begin next year.

Indonesia now formulating quality standards for all goods and services that will enter Indo-nesia or be exported.

German government to help Ubud resolve congestion

Some of them were by installation of traffic

signs and parking arrangement like the utilization of Astina Square in Ubud for temporary parking.

The board of the FKDPU had also briefly met with the Regent Agung Bharata in his office, Tuesday (Feb 11). (kmb16)

market revitalization program undertaken all this time is as-sessed to bring in a positive im-pact on traders and buyers around the market.

(kmb27)

Chairman of Commission B of the Buleleng House, Putu Mangku Budiasa, said that Bali was a world famous tourist destination. To preserve and sustain the customs, all components had to maintain the indigenous wisdom upheld on

this Island of the Gods as a world destination. “Such indigenous wisdom must be guarded well,” he hoped.

People may not get carried away on the swift entry of foreign cultures into Bali. “Preserving

indigenous wisdom in the era of regional autonomy is very impor-tant and essential. Even, it should be set forth in a written policy and in the form of regional bylaw, so there is legal instrument and shared vision as the basis of society,” said Budiasa.

When legislative candidates were given the trust by the public to represent the people in the House, the legislators should ideally be prepared to ‘take their clothes off.’ They no longer carried the attribute of political parties represented. “The legislators should not rep-

resent the political parties. When sitting in the House, the status of the House becomes the representative of society.

On that account, he said that preserving indigenous wisdom was very important. “When talking about Bali and trying to safeguard and preserve the culture of indig-enous wisdom, it is equivalent and including keeping the Homeland,” he said.

As a Bali legislative candidate from Buleleng, he hoped the gov-ernment and communities to col-laborate more closely and preserve

the indigenous culture. One of the ways was to give a ‘breath of work-ing’ and space for the artists to ap-pear expansively. There should be no counterproductive actions. Even, the legislative candidates might not strike each other in the community. “Any conflict will certainly hurt one’s self and the political party to be represented,” he said.

It was realized that Bali was the central of gravity of Indonesia. Any small thing happened in Bali would immediately go international, quickly spread to the entire world.
