CHICAGO — Popular 1980s band Duran Duran is suing its own fan club. The group known for hits like “Notorious” and “Hungry Like the Wolf” accuses the suburban Chicago-based club of breaching contract by not paying the band promised revenue.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Duran Duran’s lawsuit names Glenview-based Worldwide Fan Clubs, Inc. as the defendant. The suit was filed in Cook County Circuit Court this week.

It says the band entered a 2010 contract allowing the club to collect memberships and sell

merchandise. The contract also allegedly stipulates Duran Du-ran would get 75 percent of the profits.

Someone who answered the phone Wednesday at the Glen-view office of Worldwide Fan Clubs said the company had no comment.

Tauzia Hotels launches shuttle busIBP

KUTA - Tauzia Hotels in Bali launched Tauzia Shuttle Bus on Friday (Jul 4). A total of two units of shuttle buses with unique green color were in-troduced. The shuttle buses provided comfortable service, friendly driver and ease for guests to have a trip around Kuta and Seminyak area.

The efforts of Denpasar Transportation Agency to tackle congestion on Jalan Gunung Agung, Denpasar failed. The plan to divert the traffic at the location was strongly opposed by the public. Actu-ally the high flow of vehicles passing through the road section becomes a major obstacle to resolve the congestion at peak hours.

Traffic Affairs Division Head of the Denpasar Transportation Agency, I Nyoman Sustiawan, revealed the congestion on Jalan Gunung Agung occurred at peak hours of traffic at 07:00 to 08:30 a.m. and in the afternoon at 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. At the peak hours, the flow of vehicles passing through the road section reached ap-proximately 2,500 units each hour. The peak of traffic happened before and after school hours considering that Jalan Gunung Agung belonged to school area.

Denpasar Transportation Agency had con-ducted a meeting a few months ago to do a traffic diversion at peak hours. But the plan got stuck as could not reach any agreement with surrounding communities. “The public could not accept the traffic diversion plan,” said Sustiawan, Tuesday (Jul 22).

Other than traffic diversion, his party had attempted a prohibition from parking at one of the roadsides. However, the short-term measure taken was, according to him, not optimal to over-come the bottlenecks. In addition, the parking space at Gunung Agung Flea Market also had a major contribution to congestion.

The market spreading across an area of 2,000 square meters did not have parking lot so it then used the road body. Such condition made the con-gestion even worse because the road access was getting narrower. “To be frankly, our obstacles here are the road section belongs to school area and the flea market does not provide parking space,” he added.

Separately, Director of PD Pasar Denpasar, I Made Westra, admitted the difficulty to make a parking lot in the flea market. He said the market area had been fully occupied by around 125 traders. He denied if the on-street parking of vehicles was the cause of congestion on Jalan Gunung Agung.

During school holidays for two weeks, no congestion occurred even though the parking of flea market was still using the road body. “We’ve deployed some officers to monitor in the field. In fact, during school holidays, there was no congestion. From the results of monitoring, the congestion occurred because the traffic density,” he explained.

In addition, the efforts to revitalize and relo-cate the flea market could not be done so far as hampered by location and budget matters. Based on the data owned by the Denpasar Transporta-tion Agency, the increasing number of vehicles ranged from 7 percent to 12 percent each year. In 2013, there were 1,377,836 units of motorcycles, 220,052 units of passenger vehicle and 56,425 units of freight vehicle. (dwa)

Suarjana said the progressive taxation could provide added value for increasing regional reve-nue through vehicle taxes. Besides, this tax could give a sense of justice for people. “When people have more vehicles (cars—Ed), the greater tax will be paid. If they only have one vehicle, it is not subject to progressive taxation. However, the vehicle registration must be appropriate with the identity of the vehicle owner,” said Suarjana, Wednesday (Jul 23).

Previously, many people complained about

the application of progressive tax. In addition to the time considered too short, the system in use was often problematic, so that taxpayers were often late and imposed with fine. Although most people considered the progressive tax good, there were still many things needing to be addressed. “The taxation is nice, but the system must be addressed. Timing is also too short and lacks of socialization,” said Dewa Putu Sudarsana some time ago.

Suarjana recognized that taxpayers were con-

Bali PostSINGARAJA - Deadly accident can

happen to anyone and any time, such as the shooting down of MH17 plane belonged to the Malaysia Airlines as a result of missile shot by the rebels at the border of Ukraine. Luh Eni Kerti Asih, 27, was very lucky as she did not fly MH17 because her passport was wet in the rain.

Eni is a friend of Ketut Wiartini—affection-ately known as Wiwik—denoting one of the victims of the MH17 crash plane occurred on Thursday (Jul 17). She planned to go home and fly with the same airline as Ketut Wiartini.

Indeed, Eni had not purchased ticket yet on the same day. But, Wiwik in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and Eni in Belgium had promised to go home together with the same plane as per contact via Facebook message. When wishing to book a ticket, it was rainy in Belgium and her passport was wet as exposed to rainwater. Eni then called the Malaysia Airlines, but she got information if the ticket had sold out. “My passport was wet as exposed to rain at that time. Then, when I booked a ticket, I was told if the ticket has sold out. If my passport was not wet, probably I’ll go home with Wiwik,” she said, Tuesday night (Jul 22).

During in Belgium, Eni said she was on holiday. As per communication on Facebook with Wiwik, they were going to meet in Bali in case they could fly with the same flight.

“I know her a year ago when participating in subdistrict hiking activity on August 17,” said Eni, an alumnus of the Department of Biology at Ganesha University of Education, Singaraja.

Wiwik had sent a message of prayers to Eni when they canceled to go home together at that time. “If later on we could not fly together, let’s meet in Bali, but Wiwik will send the angels and ask the Lord Jesus to protect Eni,” said Eni quoting the Facebook message from Wiwik.

At that time, Eni always remembered the message of her mother in order to always pray prior to doing any activity. Her departure to Belgium was in private holiday and to fill the time with colleagues who were active in the field of environmental research. She knew the flight carrying Wiwik from social media. “I got a post on the plane crash from social media when I was in Belgium. I was very sad and could not say anything,” said the teacher of Bali Mandara high school.

The memory came to the mind of Eni when arriving at Ngurah Rai Airport was a blue kebaya which would be given to Wiwik after arriving in Bali. “I traveled from Belgium to Bali alone. Indeed, a fear haunted me, but I kept on praying. On hearing the sad news re-garding the plane boarded by Wiwik crashed, it’s only this blue kebaya I kept. Previously, I would like to give this after arriving in Bali,” she said. (kmb34)

Progressive tax revenue reaches IDR 100 each dayBali Post

DENPASAr - The Head of Bali revenue Service (Dispenda), Wayan Suarjana, stated that since the implementation of progressive tax, the regional revenue reached about IDr 100 million each day. However, the application of progressive tax was not solely to pursue revenue. However, many positive effects could be obtained, including reducing congestion and air pollution as well as checking vehicle more easily in case of any criminal act.

fused with the imposition of such tax. However, if it had lasted up to six months, he had confident that everything would work as expected. “I’m sure that after six months it can be running smoothly. Now, this must be understandable because the application has just run. Necessarily, this should have been applied since 2011, but there are still many obstacles,” he explained.

Suarjana detailed regarding the progressive

tax payment. For the first vehicle ownership, the owner would be charged at 1.5 percent, the sec-ond vehicle at 2 percent, the third vehicle at 2.5 percent, the fourth vehicle at 3 percent and the fifth and next vehicles at 3.5 percent. Progressive tax was the mandate of the Act No.28/2009 on Regional Taxes and Levies whose implementa-tion was then set forth in Bali Regional Bylaw No.1/2011 on Regional Taxation. (kmb21)

Agence France-PressePARIS - Cinched at the waist, with

soft rounded shoulders and a swirling skirt, Christian Dior’s famous “Bon-bon” dress today appears the epitome

“I was nervous at first ... of all the attention. But I’m excited,” she said before posting the photos on Instagram and Twitter, where her brand started just a couple years ago and has since taken off.

She is the youngest designer to ever present at the shows in Miami Beach, organizers said.

Aiello (pronounced ah-YELLOW) is a California girl who grew up wear-ing bikinis in Malibu. With help from her mom, she’d launched the swim-wear line by age 17.

“I don’t know how to sew, but my mom does and after her first attempt didn’t work out, we began our trial and error process of finding the people to help make the right bikini,” she said. The pair found a pattern maker and factory in Los Angeles where the pieces are now made.

“They’re not stopping me because I’m only 19,” Aiello said. “I’ve always said that it’s really important for young

girls to know that they shouldn’t let their age stop them.”

That carefree attitude is present in her (now) third swimwear collection, with bohemian designs and suits in lavender, blue and bright orange.

“I’m always watching the girls on the beach,” she said of her inspiration. “I wanted to make suits for every girl.”

Her collection fuses the Hawaiian shoreline with southern California style in feminine and flirty pieces with low-cut bottoms and revealing crochet designs. Bikini tops with crisscross backs are ideal for the beach lifestyle and the surfer girl.

Aiello embodied the surfer-chic look as she took to the runway after the show in a white crop top and pants, her long dirty blonde hair bouncing off her perfectly tanned shoulders.

The line can be purchased from online sites like ShopBop and from some boutiques.

of modesty and restraint. But in 1947 -- after years of cloth-

ing coupons and wartime austerity -- this simple dusty-pink wool dress with a brown belt was nothing short

of scandalous. The French fashion designer had

been yearning for a return to a more feminine silhouette to replace what he called post-war “soldier women with a boxer’s build”.

The hourglass-shaped “Bonbon” or “Sweetie” dress -- one of more than 100 haute couture outfits that have just gone on display at a new exhibition in Paris -- fitted the bill perfectly.

Dubbed the “New Look” by Harper’s Bazaar magazine, this return to feminine curves was an immedi-ate hit although the amount of fabric Dior’s new designs required caused outrage.

During the war years, dresses were typically made from just three yards (metres) of material. By contrast, one of Dior’s new evening dresses required no less than 25 yards of taffeta.

Dior himself attributed the huge success of the “Bonbon” dress not just to its being “pretty” but also to its price tag -- it sold for much less than it cost to make because of a pricing error.

The style was highly influential and “found great resonance with other

couturiers”, according to Olivier Sail-lard, co-curator of the exhibition at Paris’s Galliera museum of fashion.

For a decade from 1947, haute couture was dominated by a small group of male designers whose wasp-waisted dresses implied a return to the corset and the aesthetics of the Edwardian era.

“It’s very elegant but it can also give the idea of a woman who is trapped by the mysteries of her seduc-tion,” Saillard said.

New LookSuch supremely feminine clothes

were too much for Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, who considered them un-modern and not suitable for liberated, working women.

Rebelling against this stylistic domination, she engineered a come-back at the age of 71.

Her 1954 collection expressed the desire of women who had worked their way through two world wars for style teamed with comfort and practicality.

Its simple, straight suits and dress-es with echoes of her pre-war designs were at first snubbed by critics, then

acclaimed.“Fashion in France 1947 - 1957”

celebrates the last glory days of haute couture, an exclusive, labour-inten-sive type of fashion design through celebrated outfits by designers such as Dior, Chanel, Cristobal Balenciaga, Jacques Fath, Jacques Heim and Hubert de Givenchy.

“The 1950s was the last major period of elegance and the swansong of haute couture with the advent of ready-to-wear,” Saillard said.

Although the fashion world was on the brink of changes that would ultimately make stylish clothes avail-able to everyone, it was a time when the wardrobe of women able to afford haute couture was still bafflingly complex.

Clothes were divided up into categories such as day suits, travel suits, classic suits, two-piece day suits, travel coats, everyday coats, lunch dresses, day dresses and formal day dresses.

For evening, there was yet more subtle variety with early evening dresses, eating out dresses, dinner dresses, dancing dresses, cabaret dresses and evening dresses.

As information obtained on Wednesday (Jul 23), the case of counterfeit painting allegation was handover from the Sukawati Police. Responding to the report, the investigating authorities had al-ready requested information from a number of witnesses. Hence-forth, police would summon the defendant.

The confiscation was carried out in response to the report of the owner, I Ketut Sud, a resident of Batuan, Sukawati. This com-plainant considered to have been harmed by I Made Sin, the owner of a gallery at Penestanan Kelod, Ubud. “From the investigation on the counterfeit painting allega-tion, at least we have seized ten paintings alleged to be counterfeit works of the renowned painter

Arie Smith and had been stored in the Gianyar Police Headquarters,” said Chief II of the Gianyar Police Criminal Investigation, I Gde Made Sudarta.

Sudarta added the complain-ant purchased the entire painting worth IDR 500 million more. The complainant claimed to have been deceived because before purchas-ing the paintings, the defendant declared if those paintings were original works of Arie Smith, a Dutch painter who had long lived in Ubud. Additionally, the defen-dant also claimed if those paint-ings were obtained for free from Arie Smith. The paintings were given for services of the defendant claiming to be a former protégé of the painter who is famous for his young artist style.

After the transaction accom-plished, the complainant was sur-prised after checking and knowing if the paintings were counterfeit. “The complainant claimed to have come to the studio of Arie Smith while presenting a photograph of the paintings purchased from the defendant. In fact, Aris Smith stated if the paintings are counter-feit,” he said.

To follow up on the painting forgery report, his party chose to be careful. Other than asking for infor-mation to witnesses, the investiga-tors would also involve a number of people who were competent in the field of painting. It also included the possibility of asking for explanation from Arie Smith to ensure whether the painting was counterfeit or not. (kmb16)

DENPASAR - The Boeing 777 tasked with shepherding its passen-gers from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, held the promise of beginnings and endings for many on board: the thrill of a new adventure or dream vacation for some, and the comfort of going back home for others.

It was love and a fresh start that had lured Willem Grootscholten aboard. The burly, 53-year-old divorced former soldier from the Netherlands — a gentle giant of a man — had sold his house and was moving to Bali to build a new life with his darling Christine, a guesthouse owner.

He’d met her by chance on a trip to the Indonesian island last year.

Christine, who like many Indonesians has only one name, had heard through a friend that some guy had fallen off a cliff and hurt his back. She told her friend to take him to a traditional healer she knew. The next day, Grootscholten called Christine to thank her.

They connected over coffee. Grootscholten had to return to the Netherlands, where he was working as a bouncer at a pot-selling cafe. But the two stayed in touch online, and their relationship blossomed. On New Year’s Eve, he surprised her by showing up at her doorstep. He stayed three weeks.

The father of Christine’s two children, 14-year-old Dustin and 8-year-old Stephanie, had died six years ago, and they quickly bonded with Grootscholten, calling him “Daddy.” The four stayed in touch online. Almost every day, they shared meals via Skype by placing their iPads on their tables during dinner for Christine’s family and lunch for Grootscholten.

In May, Grootscholten returned to Bali to celebrate Christine’s birthday and told her he wanted to spend the rest of his life beside her. She drove him to the airport on June 3 and kissed him goodbye.

It would be their last kiss.Thursday, July 17, dawned warm and sunny in Amsterdam. Before leaving his house for Schiphol Airport, Grootscholten

called Christine and the children for one last Skype chat. He was so excited, he began to dance.

“Daddy’s flying to see you!” he told the kids. “We will be together forever!”

Flight 17 took off around 12:15 p.m. on what should have been an 11 hour and 45 minute flight.

It lasted two hours. In Bali, Christine prayed. “Hope you will be fine... ohhhhhhhhhh

GODDDDDDDDDDDD... PLEASEEEEEEEEEE!!! I beg You...” she posted on Facebook.

The ATR-72 operated by Taiwan’s TransAsia Airways was carrying 58 passengers and crew when it crashed into houses on the Penghu island chain in the Taiwan Strait between Taiwan and China late Wednesday, authorities said. The plane was on a flight from the city of Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan.

Two people killed on the plane were French citizens and the rest Taiwanese, an airline representative, Phoebe Lu, told The Associated Press on Thursday. The airline identified the French passengers as Jeromine Dera-mond and Penelope Luternauer.

The airline said one of the injured 10 survivors had gone home, and that five local residents had been hurt on the ground but they were also treated and released.

The twin-engine turboprop crashed while making a second landing at-tempt, Taiwan transportation Min-ister Yeh Kuang-shih told reporters. Penghu, a scenic chain of 64 islets, is a popular tourist site about 150 ki-lometers (90 miles) southwest of the Taiwanese capital, Taipei.

The crash of Flight GE222 was Taiwan’s first fatal air accident in 12 years and came after Typhoon Matmo passed across the island, causing heavy rains that continued

into Wednesday night. About 200 airline flights had been canceled earlier in the day due to rain and strong winds.

The government’s Central News Agency cited Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau as saying there were thunderstorms in the area at the time of the crash. Lu said TransAsia suspected typhoon weather caused the crash, but was waiting for avia-tion authorities to finish an investi-gation to say for sure.

The plane showed no defects and had ample visibility to land safely, Civil Aeronautics Administration spokesman Lee Wan-lee said.

The airline said family members had taken a charter flight on Thurs-day morning to Magong airport, near where the crash happened. They would then be taken to a morgue to identify victims.

“All the bodies have been dug out,” said Chen Tung-yi, a section chief with the Penghu disaster response center. “We’re cleaning up the site now and also doing ap-praisals of the situation and trying to identify victims.”

The plane crashed into eight houses, including some built from coral harvested off the coast, Chen said.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Argentina’s embattled Vice Presi-dent was back in court Wednesday, this time over false data in docu-ments for an old car that he bought about 20 years ago.

Amado Boudou appeared before a federal judge and presented a writ-ten statement instead of speaking in his defense. Boudou is accused of transferring a Honda CRX au-tomobile to his name irregularly in 2003.

The judge is expected to decide in 10 days whether to charge Bou-dou or dismiss the case for lack of evidence.

In a separate case, the vice president was charged last month with bribery and conducting busi-ness incompatible with public of-fice. He is accused of using shell companies and secret middlemen

to gain control of a company that was given contracts to print Argen-tine currency as well as material for President Cristina Fernandez’s election campaign.

Boudou is the first sitting Ar-gentine vice president to face such charges. If convicted, he could be sentenced to between one and six years in prison and be banned for life from elective office.

The charges against the vice president come as Fernandez is struggling to curb double-digit inflation and court rulings in the United States that threaten to force Argentina into default on its debts.

Fernandez has remained loyal to Boudou even as the allegations have made him Argentina’s least popular politician. His falling fortunes have left the government without a clear presidential successor ahead of next year’s elections. Fernandez has yet to speak publicly about the cases.

Bali PostTABANAN - The driver of ARtrans bus serving the

route Solo, Yogyakarta, Bandung and Jakarta was arrested by Tabanan Police Narcotics Unit in a urine test against public transport drivers in relation to the Eid Security Op-eration 2014 in the rest area of Soka Indah, Antap village, Selemadeg, Wednesday (Jul 23). The driver of ARtrans bus with license plate B 7999 VGA on behalf of Gandu Hariono, 54, a resident of Malang, was caught carrying a brown roll wrapped in plastic admitted to be crystal meth stored in front right small pouch of his pants.

The arrest started from the suspicion of the officers that saw the driver’s gestures during the urine test. Even, when asked to write down his name by the officer, the offender could not write with a reason not to bring his glasses. Ultimately, the offender was told to pee in the toilet. In the toilet, the officers alerted saw if the bus driver was confused. Even, he was known to be about to ask for the urine of another driver incidentally next to him. Luckily, his effort was known by the officers. From the results of test kit, his urine was proved positive to drug substances. Based on the results, the Narcotics Unit officers further investigated and made a search to the bus driver with final destination to Jakarta. Even, during the examination, the offender that was still under the influence of drugs offered some amount of money to the officers.

Chief of Tabanan Police Narcotics Unit, Gede Made Surya Atmaja, would explore further the finding related to the finding. His party was still examining and deepening to the finding of crystal meth brought by the bus driver.

The bus driver caught carrying crystal meth was the result of urine test intended primarily to bus driver and driver helper traveling to Gilimanuk. The activity held by the Tabanan Police in cooperation with the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) of Bali Chapter was required to ensure the safety of passengers leaving Bali for their home village.

One by one of those bus drivers and conductors should undergo the urine test. Even, they were not necessary to wait long, it only took them 1 to 2 minutes and the results could be immediately known.

Empowerment Division Head of the BNN Bali, Nyo-man Artana, said the activity was to provide security and comfort for people who wanted to make homecoming. “Together with our colleagues from police department, we want to ensure the safety of homecomers. It is an in-tegrated activity of the Transportation Agency, National Police and BNN to anticipate and socialize the hazards of narcotics,” he explained.

According to him, narcotic was extremely hazardous due to the hallucination caused. This effort was also meant to prevent the occurrence of traffic accident during the crowded homecoming traffic. “Fragility of drug impact causes that far thing looks near, while near thing looks far,” he explained.

Nyoman Artana added the urine test kit could detect at least 7 parameters excluding alcohol, cocaine, marijuana, heroin and other drug types. Even, such activities would be developed in cooperation with health authorities in particular to check blood sugar, blood pressure and cho-lesterol having an impact on the equilibrium condition or stamina of the driver.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Tabanan Police Narcotics Unit said the Eid security operation was a humanitarian operation that was more focused on the safety of the pas-sengers to be going home. “It is intended to target public transport, especially buses that transport our colleagues for homecoming,” he explained. The Head of National Agency of Food and Drug Con-trol (BBPOM) of Bali, Endang Widowati, when met on Wednesday (Jul 24) said that styrofoam was actually a trademark of product made from styrene granules pro-cessed using benzene. The benzene itself belonged to substance that could cause various diseases.

When consumed, the benzene itself would be absorbed by blood cells and over time would damage the function of the spinal marrow. Another effect of benzene was the reduction of immune system resulting in lower resistance to diseases. “Some of the diseases that can arise are the problem in the thyroid gland and disruption in nervous system which can cause fatigue, accelerated heartbeat, trembling, restlessness and sleeping difficulty,” said Endang.

Admitted Endang, no country in the world prohibited the use of the styrofoam on the basis of health consideration although having been processed. “The standards of WHO for styrene monomer as the basic material of styrofoam is not considered to harm the health if the residue does not exceed 5,000 ppm,” said Endang.

On that account, though it was not prohibited, the BPOM always checked the feasibility of styrofoam circulating in the community. Recently, according to Endang, her party made a test on 17 types of food packaging using styrofoam.

Bali PostDENPASAR - As a barometer of the world, Bali must

be tarnished by rampant robberies especially in Badung and Denpasar. More ironically, the theft with violence cases have not yet poised with optimal handling by police. Even, the swarms of bandits armed with firearm and sharp weapon are still roaming freely.

The last shocking robbery occurred at the home of Ko-mang Slamet on Jalan Blumbung, Sibang Kaja, Abiansemal, Badung, Wednesday (Jul 9). Five robbers dressed in ninja held six home dwellers where four of them were under-age children. Two days later, police missed again in the robbery at the Satya Bhakti Cooperative, Mambal Kajanan hamlet, Mambal village, Abiansemal, Badung, Friday (Jul 11) hold-ing two security guards. To speed up the process of handling, police made facial sketch and spread it.

From early 2013, the robbery case occurred at the Villa Chole on Jalan Pantai Brawa, Gang Bisma, North Kuta, Badung. Two offenders armed with sharp weapon came into the villa and stabbed an Australian citizen, Paul Gill, for five times. Fortunately, his wife and two children survived. Stabbing of the offender caused the victim to sprawl so he was then rushed to BIMC Hospital to undergo medical treat-ment. Finally, this case was handled by North Kuta Police backed up by the Badung Police and the Bali Police. So far, the cases are still under police investigation.

The next action occurred on May 2013 where a swarm of

robbers targeted PT United Indobali on Jalan Imam Bonjol, Denpasar, Thursday (May 2). Later, the robber of five came to the scene with firearm and broke in the BCA ATM ma-chine located behind the PT United Indobali security post. Two local security guards namely Andi Prasetiawan, 29, and Ketut Santika, 25, were mugged with a gun and knife. Then, their eyes and mouth were fastened with tape and the hands tied with rope. Not only that, a BCA customer who wanted to withdraw money at the ATM, Kadek Sovia Kristana, 23, was also treated the same by the offenders.

Another robbery case happened to the BCA ATM machine at Toko Mitra 10 on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, Suwung, South Denpasar. The offenders incapacitated a security guard named Simon Pitu, 31, from Flores. The burly security guard instantly shriveled after being mugged with pistol and the mouth and eyes were taped, while the hands were tied with rope. Ironically, the offender shot into the air before overpowered the security guard of the Toko Mitra 10.

Spokesperson of Bali Police, Hery Wiyanto, when asked for his confirmation on the rampant robbery cases said that police were still investigating the cases. In addition, his party had also attempted to look for all means to hunt down the offenders by spreading facial sketch and increasing patrol surveillance at every vulnerable point. “We’re still inves-tigating, please pray so that they can be quickly revealed,” he said, Wednesday (Jul 23). Styrofoam food packaging

Contains chemical substances, causes disease Bali Post

DENPASAR - When shopping to food stalls and bring home the food, the traders infrequently wrap the food in a white container such as styrofoam. This packaging is quite practical because it is light and looks classy. However, within certain limits it can be bad for health where the chemical substance used as the basic material of styrofoam will unwittingly switch to food.

The packaging tested was in the form of various types such as cup, plate and lunch box bowl. The test results indicated if the residue of food packaging was only 12 to 43 ppm. “All of the packaging samples are eligible. Even, some samples are not detected or harmless,” she explained.

Although they were still in safe level, Endang remained to call for in order that people should not pack food in warm condition with the styrofoam, especially for fatty foods as it could cause the chemicals to react and move out from the styrofoam into the food. Endang expected the use of styrofoam to wrap food could be reduced. (kmb24)

NEW YORK — It isn’t a house-hold name, but the company at the center of a food scandal in China helps make some of the world’s most popular foods, including the Big Macs and Quarter Pounders served at McDonald’s locations.

OSI Group, a privately held company based in Aurora, Illinois, was thrust into the spotlight this weekend when a Chinese TV station reported that one of its Shanghai plants repackaged old beef and chicken and slapped new expira-tion dates on them. The scare has ensnared chains including McDon-ald’s, KFC, Burger King and Star-bucks, all of which got ingredients from a unit of OSI in the region called Husi Food Co.

The controversy deepened Wednesday when five workers for Husi, were detained by police. An official with China’s food safety regulator told the Xinhua News Agency that some of the illegal conduct it uncovered was an ar-rangement “organized” by Husi.

None of OSI’s more than 50 other plants around the world have been implicated and CEO Sheldon

Lavin noted in a statement that authorities in China have inspected and found no issues at its other fa-cilities. He called what happened at the Shanghai location “completely unacceptable.”

The scandal is a blemish for OSI, which began as a family-run meat market in 1909 and prides itself on its high standards. The company notes on its website that it has a “strong heritage of quality and service” and that food safety and quality assurance are “guiding principles.”

Its business took off after Ray Kroc tapped it in the 1950s to be a beef supplier for McDonald’s Corp. OSI grew alongside McDonald’s as the hamburger chain expanded around the world, and even helped create the McRib.

OSI doesn’t have to report financial information, but accord-ing to PrivCo, which researches privately held companies, it had $6.13 billion in sales last year. OSI doesn’t publicly disclose all of its clients either, but it supplies numerous big-name chains includ-ing Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc., for which it cooks some beans and carnitas and barbacoa meats.

In the U.S., OSI has said it has

systems in place to ensure products can be located and taken out of the system within two hours if any issues arise. Executives have said they work with an outside public relations agency to periodically stage mock crises to be prepared for real-life controversies.

Richard Adams, a former owner of McDonald’s restaurants in South-ern California who now runs a consulting firm for franchisees, said OSI closely oversees its produc-tion process in the U.S. and that he didn’t know how the lapses in China occurred.

It’s unknown how much of OSI’s revenue come from China or wheth-er it has similar safety checks there, but the company is already dealing with fallout from the controversy at its Shanghai plant.

Yum Brands Inc., which owns KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, said Wednesday that OSI wasn’t a major supplier for its restaurants in any region of the world but that it was terminating all agreements with the company, including in Australia and the U.S. Yum, based in Louisville, Kentucky, added that it reserves the right to take legal action against OSI.

Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party was elected in May with the big-gest electoral majority in three decades on pledges to revive In-dia’s sluggish economy, ousting the scandal-tainted, left-leaning Congress party.

Speaking at the end of a three-day visit to India, World Bank president Jim Yong Kim told reporters he was hugely impressed with Modi’s “com-prehensive and extremely ambi-tious vision for the country”.

“I am more optimistic leav-ing (about India’s prospects) than when I arrived,” Kim said following talks with Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to discuss the new govern-ment’s development priorities.

Modi, 63, “has an extreme sense of urgency”, Kim said, as he outlined an offer to India of “financial support worth $15 billion to $18 billion over the next three years” to help lift hundreds of millions of Indians out of poverty.

India is already the Bank’s largest cumulative borrower.

“His (Modi’s) intention is to grow this economy quick-ly, grow the number of jobs quickly and demonstrate to the Indian people you can do things at scale with great speed,” Kim said.

As part of Modi’s anti-pov-erty drive, Kim strongly urged him not to block a landmark world trade deal that would make it easier for goods to cross borders and inject an esti-mated $1 billion into the global economy.

India has been threatening not to ratify the World Trade Organization (WTO) agreement reached last year in Bali unless it gets assurances that it can help its poor citizens with food subsidies.

“Freer trade and more trade

have been extremely important for poor nations,” Kim said as the July 31 deadline for accep-tance of the treaty by all 160 WTO members loomed.

While Modi is pro-business, his government says the trade facilitation agreement or TFA is biased in favour of wealthier nations which assert that food subsidies lead to distortions in global trade.

Kim said Modi was especial-ly keen for progress in education and in energy development with 300 million of energy-starved India’s 1.25-billion population still without electricity, accord-ing to the Bank.

“We are going to have to run as fast as we have ever run to keep up with him,” said Kim.

Kim’s lavish praise came de-spite criticism by some econo-mists of the government’s bud-get in early July that they said failed to take sufficient steps to reform the still highly regulated inward-looking economy.

Kim added he was open to India’s call for reforms to the Bank’s structure to better reflect the growing clout of emerging nations.

“No one can doubt the im-portance of middle-income BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) coun-tries,” Kim said, adding the bank had already taken steps to mirror new power equations and more discussions would be held next year.

“The organisation has to reflect the new reality, we will continue to make changes,” he said.

Kim’s statements follows the five-nation BRICS bloc’s establishment this month of a new multilateral infrastructure development bank to rival the World Bank and challenge US-led dominance of the global economy.

DENPASAR - The performance was interesting and full of moral messages. The performance of the arja operetta entitled Galuh Lika Liku presented by Lokananta Dance Studio Singapadu did not only serve as a form of Balinese art preservation, but also grew the arja operetta from an early age. Unique-ly, it could be played by children in the nuance of past Bali.

Artistic expression became a subtle part of Balinese daily life. Accompanied with a simple musi-cal instrument made from bamboo, the kid artists were able to integrate the art with the world of its own. They played and sang as if they hinted an inner awareness that the journey of human life from birth had been armed with a contradic-tory character. There were good-ness and badness, delicateness and wildness.

These intricacies of human behavior with different characters were featured in a religious and aesthetic art in the arja operetta collaboration. Commenced with a meow-meow game, the resumed the performance by going up to the stage and watched the arja operetta. After saying prayers, the children chanted wargasari psalmody in line with the ritual procession.

Afterward, it was resumed with the performance of panglembar by presenting Hard Mask and Old Mask Dance symbolizing the jour-ney of human life which was born, grew and developed intelligence and became the paragon in old age. This art presentation was ac-companied by Manik Swari Dance Studio Batuyang directed by Made Gde Mandra.

The next scene was the life jour-ney of romance, where Galuh and Liku equally fell in love with Raden Mantri Manis, a crown prince of a kingdom. Here, Galuh showed off the expertise in religiosity in the form of psalmody of dharma and literary appreciation. Meanwhile, the Liku featured contemporary dance movement showing off the passion of the young and moder-nity.

Before staging, the activity was commenced with a workshop presenting speakers from the circle of practitioners and artists such as I Nyoman Cerita, I Nyoman Arjana Adiputra and education practitioner I Gde Rudia Adiputra. Meanwhile, the creative idea aspect was presented by I Ketut Sumadi, an adviser to Pagari Community and Director of Religious Studies Graduate Program at the Hindu Dharma Institute (IHDN) Den-pasar. Building of this temple has been renovated in 1961 but in 1965 the temple building was abandoned and the renovation was totally dis-continued. Ultimately, on July 14, 1976, the entire building collapsed as hit by earthquake. After that, four customary villages were responsible for the temple existence, namely the BB Agung, Puseh Agung of Banjar Tengah village, Kertha Jaya custom-ary village of Pendem village, and Lokasari customary village of Loloan Timur village.

At the beginning of the Merthasari Temple and before the renovation in 1965, there was only one temple lo-cated under a large banyan tree. Priest of the Merthasari Temple, Mangku Nendra, said that previously there was a small pond around the temple. After the renovation, the pond was moved and a meru shrine was established. Now, it has been added with a Padma shrine on the pond. Meanwhile, water of the pond is taken modernly from the ground with the depth of about 15 meters, and then flowed under the Padma shrine.

As a matter of fact, it was named Amerthasari Temple. However, for consideration of easier pronunciation, it was then called Merthasari. The cur-rent temple priest, denoting the third generation, mentioned the meaning of Amerthasari was that Amertha meant

the whole foods, while Sari meant the essence.

Mangku Nendra is the successor of the previous temple priest, namely Nengah Netra who was also his de-ceased father. Meanwhile, the first was still unclear because the temple was still not restored at that time.

At the moment, the Dang Khayan-gan Amerthasari Temple has some shrines, namely the Ratu Nyoman, Padmasana, Meru, Pepelik, Taksu and Dewa Ayu Manik Galih dedicated to venerate the Goddess Sri.

Genesis of the temple has some-thing to do with Danghyang Nirartha. When arriving in Bali, Pedanda Sakti taught religion at Gede Per-ancak Temple where currently the Dang Khayangan Perancak Temple has been moved to Tanjung Tangis. At that time, he asked the monkeys where there was another village. The monkey responded by facing north and there laid a village called Budeng. There lived black monkey or Ijah. As soon as arriving at the village, he asked again where there was a village, and the monkeys were facing the west, now becoming the location of the Merthasari Temple.

When arriving at the village, he taught the people about agriculture, farming and trade. The Telaga Taman was a very fertile area. Religious life was quite good. In this area, there were

five sanctums. In the long run, it turned into Amerthasari village and is now called Mertasari.

Now, the temple whose anniver-sary falls on Anggara Kasih (Tuesday) Perangbakat is venerated by four cus-tomary villages namely the Lokasari (Mertasari), Dauh Waru, Pendem and Batu Agung. Mangku added that other than the temple, there was also the Taman Temple that formerly was a pond. “In days of yore, there was a temple located beneath the banyan tree,” explained Nendra.

Aside from the six shrines exist-ing today, the temple sitting on the area of 1800 square meters also has a Peselang pavilion to place gamelan instrument, Piasan, storing chamber and the easternmost is pavilion of Banten Piodalan (oblation).

In the past, most of the support-ing devotees were farmers, but now they are from four customary villages and even from beyond Bali. As the existing plan, this temple area will be expanded to the cur-rent parking lot. After the land acquisition, it will become about 3,000 square meters. Renovation and expansion of the temple area will include the temple building, construction of base fence, parking lot expansion, the arrangement of temple landscaping, as well as the wantilan hall. NEGARA - Amerthasari Temple located about 1.5 km south of Negara town is one of the Dang Khayan-gan temples in Jembrana. From time immemorial to the present, the temple situating amid the customary settlement of Lokasari, or precisely Mertasari hamlet, Loloan Timur, Negara, is venerated by the subak members. It is reflected at the beginning of each planting season. To keep away their plants from diseases, residents are always saying prayers and starting their activities from the temple. It is a universal temple because it is used to venerate a great religious teacher, Danghyang Nirartha and closely associated with his pilgrimage to the Island of Bali.

JAKARTA - China’s Deputy Chief of the Military Commission General Fan Changlong is sched-uled to commence his two-day visit to Indonesia, starting Thursday (July 24).

According to a source from

China’s Defense Ministry, General Fan will meet Indonesian Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro to discuss the progress in defense cooperation between Indonesia and China. General Fan is also scheduled to meet Vice President Boediono and later on have a meet-ing with Military Chief General

Moeldoko. On Friday, General Fan will vis-

it Indonesia’s Peacekeeping Center in Sentul, West Java province.

On November 7, 2007, Indone-sia and China signed an agreement to cooperate in the defense sector. Cooperation has been fruitful ever since, which is apparent from the

frequent visits between the of-ficials from the defense ministry and military of both countries. Indonesia and China have also conducted several joint military exercises.

With regard to the defense industry, Indonesia and China produce the C-705 missile, which

is used to equip the Indonesian Navy’s fast boats.

The Chinese Military Commis-sion has an important role in the Communist Party as it is led by the Chief of the Communist Party and President Xi Jinping. The com-mission supervises the Chinese Defense Ministry and military.

A peaceful transfer of power in Indonesia, the country with the world’s largest Muslim population, would go against a worrying trend in the region of flawed elections and military meddling.

Over the past year, there have been disputed elections in Malay-sia and Cambodia, where this week the opposition agreed to end a par-liamentary boycott. Thailand, once an example of democratic prog-ress, is facing its most repressive period of military rule in decades. Authoritarian governments prevail in Laos and Vietnam, and reforms seem to be stalling in former pariah state Myanmar.

Political change has been com-paratively smooth in Indonesia, the largest country in Southeast Asia, over the past decade and a half. Widodo’s emergence appears to reflect how far the country has come since popular protests ended the 30-year rule of former dictator Suharto in 1998.

Widodo, the 53-year-old Jakarta governor, was the first candidate in a direct presidential election without ties to Suharto. He won by 8 million votes, or 6 percent, over Prabowo Subianto, a former general and son-in-law of the late dictator. Political uncertainties remain, however, as Subianto an-nounced Wednesday he plans to file a legal challenge in the nation’s highest court.

Indonesian president-elect Joko Widodo greets supporters with his ‘three-finger greeting’ symbolizing ‘The Unity of Indo-nesia’, the third of Indonesia’s five principles, during a gathering in Jakarta, Wednesday, July 23, 2014. Jakarta Gov. Joko Widodo, known to most as “Jokowi,” was declared the winner late Tuesday after all the votes were counted from the July 9 election.

U.S., whose embassy witnessed vote counting, is confident it was a credible process.

Top U.S. diplomat John Kerry congratulated Widodo soon after Tuesday’s official result, and hours later, Obama called the president-elect. He pointedly stated, accord-ing to a White House statement issued Wednesday, that “through this free and fair election, the people of Indonesia have once again shown their commitment to democracy.”

Working with current President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who has served since 2004 and will cede power Oct. 20, Obama has culti-

vated a stronger U.S. relationship with Indonesia as part of his ad-ministration’s effort to “rebalance” American foreign policy toward Asia. Obama, who lived in Indo-nesia as a child, visited the country twice during his first term.

The two nations declared a comprehensive partnership in 2010 and cooperate on areas including health, environment, education and regional diplomacy. Wash-ington has encouraged Indonesia’s de facto leadership of Southeast Asia’s regional bloc as it strives for economic integration and to cope with the rise of increasingly assertive China.

Indonesia has sought to keep a strategic balance between the U.S. and China, and that’s likely to continue under Widodo, although he’s given few clues about foreign policy, a field where he has scant experience. His first opportunity to meet Obama is likely to be at the East Asia Summit to be held in Myanmar in November.

The former furniture exporter, who won over Indonesians with his homespun style, has little experience on the national stage but enjoys a reputation for ef-ficient leadership. He will have to govern a vast archipelago of 240 million people. Economic

growth has slowed over the past two years. The rising cost of fuel subsidies has forced cuts in state spending, and infrastructure is in a poor state.

Despite Indonesia’s emergence as a democracy, corruption is chronic. Indonesia ranked 114th out of 177 countries on Transpar-ency International’s 2013 Corrup-tion Perceptions Index.

But the Widodo victory takes at least one sensitive issue off the agenda, Prabowo’s human rights record, said Doug Paal, who served as White House director of Asian affairs under presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush.

“Before making this decision, the FAA worked with its U.S. government counterparts to assess the security situ-ation in Israel and carefully reviewed both significant new information and measures the government of Israel is taking to mitigate potential risks to civil aviation,” the FAA said. “The agency will continue to closely monitor the very fluid situation around Ben Gurion Airport and will take ad-ditional actions as necessary.”

The FAA instituted a 24-hour prohibition Tuesday in response to a rocket strike that landed about a mile from Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv. The directive, which was extended Wednesday, applied only to U.S. carriers.

The FAA has no authority over foreign airlines operating in Israel, although the European Aviation Safety Agency late Tuesday said it “strongly recommends” that airlines refrain from operating flights to and from Tel Aviv. Some European carriers, including Air France and Lufthansa, extended flight cancelations through Thursday.

The FAA’s flight ban was criticized by the Israeli government and by Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, who questioned whether President Barack Obama used a federal agency to impose an economic boycott on Israel.

Delta Air Lines, which diverted a jumbo jet away from Tel Aviv before Tuesday’s ban by the FAA, will not necessarily resume flights to Israel even if U.S. authorities declare the area safe, the airline’s CEO said before the FAA lifted the ban.

CEO Richard Anderson said Delta would of course obey FAA orders but would continue to make its own deci-sions about safety.

“We appreciate the advice and consent and the intelligence we get, but we have a duty and an obligation above and beyond that to indepen-dently make the right decisions for our employees and passengers,” Anderson said on a conference call with reporters. “Even if they lift” the prohibition on flying in and out of Ben Gurion Airport, “we still may not go in depending on what the facts and

circumstances are.”Anderson declined to discuss spe-

cifically how the airline would make the decision to resume the flights and spoke only in general terms. He said the airline decides whether flights are safe to operate “on an independent basis, so we will evaluate the infor-mation we have and we will make the judgment that our passengers and employees rely on us to make for them every day.”

The CEO of Middle East carrier Emirates said after the shoot-down in Ukraine of a Malaysia Airlines jet last week that global airlines need better risk assessment from inter-national aviation authorities. Delta, however, seemed more inclined to go it alone.

“We have a broad and deep se-curity network around the world,” Anderson said. “We have security directors that work for Delta in all the regions of the world, and we have a very sophisticated capability and methodology to manage these kinds of risks, whether it’s this or a volcano or a hurricane.”

BANGKOK — Thailand’s railway authority said on Thursday it will re-launch women- and children-only carriages in main routes nationwide after a 13-year-old girl was raped and killed in her berth on an overnight train earlier this month.

The State Railway of Thailand said in a statement that the spe-cial carriages will start operating on trains traveling to the north, the northeast and the south on Aug. 1. Female passengers and boys younger than 10 and shorter than 150 centimeters (4 feet 11 inches) can ride in the carriages, which will be run by female employees.

The move followed public furor over the assault allegedly carried out by the train’s staff in early July. One employee was arrested in the rape and murder and a second was arrested as an accomplice. The national railway governor also was sacked by sThailand’s military government.

The railway authority said the new carriage service will ensure the safety and convenience of female and children passengers. Since the girl’s death, alcohol testing has begun on railway employees, and public health agencies have called for alcohol to be banned on trains altogether. The women-only carriages had been canceled previously due to profit losses.

ALGIERS, Algeria — An Air Algerie flight from Burkina Faso to Algiers disappeared from radar early Thursday, the official Algerian news agency said.

Air navigation services lost track of the plane after 0155 GMT, or 50 minutes after takeoff, the agency said. That means that Flight AH5017 had been missing for hours before the news was made public.

“In keeping with procedures, Air Algerie has launched its emer-gency plan,” the agency quoted the airline as saying.

The flight path of the plane from Ouagadougou, the capital of the west African nation of Burkina Faso, to Algiers was not im-mediately clear.

Ougadougou is in a nearly straight line south of Algiers, passing over Mali where unrest continues in the north.

However, a senior French official said it was unlikely that fighters in Mali had weaponry that could shoot down a plane. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to speak for attribution, said the fights have shoulder-fired weapons which could not hit an aircraft at cruising altitude.

Labuan Sait Beach

IBPULUWATU - This beach is

located several kilometers on the northern part of Uluwatu Temple, facing to Indonesian Ocean. From the parking lot, the visitors must walk through a coral alley as long as 60 meters through a beautiful beach called Labuan Sait. The beach has white sand and very clean and also very quiet so it is very suit-able for recreation. Sun bathing and surfing are also can be done on the beach. The local fisher-men are also providing bots that can be rented by the tourist who want to look around and explore the beauty of the beach. There are also several restau-rants and shops in the area for the visitors.

For Vincenzo Nibali, the second ride in the mountains on France’s border with Spain was more serious. “The Shark” nibbled yet more seconds away from several of his closest challengers, and the yellow jersey that he has worn for all but two days of the race seemed to fit just a little more tightly ahead of the finish Sunday in Paris.

Nibali was even businesslike with his own prime minister, imploring him not to get too ahead of himself in celebration. “It’s true that I received a text message from Matteo Renzi, who invited me to Chigi Palace to celebrate my victory,” the cautious Sicilian said about the premier’s official residence. “I replied that only after winning — if I do so — I’ll be able to say that I’ll be present.”

The 124.5-kilometer (77-mile) trek Wednes-day was the shortest stage in this year’s Tour. It covered three hard Category 1 ascents from Saint-Gaudens and a final push up to Pla d’Adet ski station above the town of Saint-Lary-Sou-lan. Majka, who also won Stage 14 in the Alps, again showed he’s the best climber in this Tour and tightened his grip on the polka dot jersey awarded to the race’s King of the Mountains.

Giovanni Visconti got the action going on the last climb with a solo breakaway with about nine kilometers (5 1/2 miles) left, but could not hold off Majka. Visconti, who also is Sicilian, was second, 29 seconds back, and Nibali was third, 46 seconds behind. With a last Pyrenean day ahead Thursday, Majka could ensure that he takes the red-dot jersey home. His closest rival for it when the stage started was Spain’s Joaquim Rodriguez, who swatted the air in frustration at Majka when the Pole broke away on the last climb.

Majka said he felt “comfort” in the last five kilometers in part because he’d been saving up energy a day earlier by riding easier. He finished in a bunch 24 1/2 minutes behind Australian teammate Michael Rogers, who won Stage 16.

By Wednesday, “I felt really, really good in the last climb,” Majka said, after tapping his chest, thrusting his arms skyward and shouting in joy at the victory. “For me, when there are a lot of climbs, it’s the best.” There was a time when seemingly effortless victories smacked of something more sinister at the Tour: the use of performance-enhancers.

Andrea Dovizioso has extended his Ducati MotoGP deal for two more sea-sons, while team-mate Cal Crutchlow insists he will honour the second year of his contract. Both riders had been linked to seats with the returning Suzuki factory squad for 2015.

But during the ‘World Ducati Week’ event at Misano on Saturday, Doviz-ioso announced a contract extension, and Crutchlow denied suggestions that he was seeking an early release from his current two-year deal.

Dovizioso joined Ducati to replace Ya-maha returnee Valentino Rossi at the start of 2013. Although the Italian team has still not won a race since Casey Stoner’s 2010 Australian Grand Prix victory, Dovizioso said he was encouraged that the changes being instigated by new project chief Gigi Dall’Igna would pay off in time.

“We’ve reached an agreement and this is because it’s an interesting project which is beginning to bear fruit with the arrival of Dall’Igna,” said Dovizioso.

“We’ve had two podiums already this season and we are fourth in the world championship.

“The current situation is really excit-ing, especially with the plans for 2015 in mind.”

Crutchlow has struggled since joining Ducati from Tech 3 Yamaha this season and is currently only 14th in the champi-onship, but during the press conference at Misano he insisted there were no doubts about him continuing with the team.

Pramac Ducati rider Andrea Iannone - who has regularly upstaged his factory counterparts this season - was mooted as a replacement in the works line-up if either Dovizioso or Crutchlow left.

WRC Commission president Carlos Barbosa says the FIA is determined to rein-vigorate the sport’s spectacle with the next generation of World Rally Cars.

New technical regulations will arrive in the world championship in 2017, but Barbosa is adamant those rules will be written and communicated before the end of this year. And he wants variety back in the service park.

“If you paint all of the [current World Rally] cars white,” said Barbosa, “right now it’s not possible to recognise which is which. We need to change that and we need to bring the spectacle back to our sport and make the cars more attractive.”

AUTOSPORT sources have suggested there will be significant change in 2017 both in the size of cars - potentially mov-ing from the current segment-B cars up to segment-D - and in the engine power, with the rules centred on controlling fuel flow to allow manufacturers to, within reason, run whatever engine they prefer.

“We are at the beginning of the discus-

sions for the 2017 car,” said Barbosa. “This is the principle [fuel-flow regulation] but out of this principle, things can still change.

“We have had the meeting with the [FIA] technical working group and the manufacturers, and now it must go to the Commission.

“I will be in Geneva soon to discuss this document with Jarmo [Mahonen, FIA rally director], Michele [Mouton, FIA WRC manager] and Jean [Todt FIA president] and then we will say: ‘This is OK, that is not OK, change this or change that.’

“We cannot take this meeting as the final meeting, but I think we are going in a very good way.

“We must change many things to make the WRC in the top events in the world: the WRC must be bigger.”

Barbosa confirmed 2017 regulations would be prepared and most likely re-vealed at the December meeting of the World Motor Sport Council. “I am sure we will have these regulations by the end of the season,” he said.

Ashley Young and defender Reece James scored two second-half goals each as United opened its summer tour with a surprisingly polished win.

Van Gaal doesn’t subscribe to the notion that such a friendly is meaningless, not when United have so much work to do this summer.

“I think always the results do matter,” Van Gaal said. “With such a result, you get confidence, and also confidence in a new system. The boys are willing to pick up all the info. We have given a lot of info, but it’s fantastic how they performed today.”

Van Gaal’s revealed a system similar to the attack of his Dutch World Cup team. The tactics might be unfamiliar to United fans, but they worked splendidly in a stun-ning start.

Reuters RIO DE JANEIRO - New Bra-

zil coach Dunga has named An-drey Lopes as his assistant man-ager and given former World Cup winners Taffarel and Mauro Silva places on his backroom team, the Brazilian Football Confederation said on Wednesday.

The little-known Lopes was Dunga’s assistant when he coached Internacional last year.

Taffarel, who will be goal-keeping coach, played alongside Dunga when they won the World Cup in 1994, as did Mauro Silva, the former midfielder, who Dunga said would help him where and when needed.

They were among the 13 new

names appointed to provide back up to Dunga, who was made na-tional team coach on Tuesday.

“We are calling up players who were world champions so we have that DNA in our team,” Gilmar Rinaldi, the technical director in charge of Brazil’s men’s, youth and women’s sides, told a news conference in Rio de Janeiro.

“We want these professionals to be our critical eyes, pointing out where we can improve.”

The appointments came the day after Dunga was named coach for a second time, replac-ing Luiz Felipe Scolari, who re-signed after the World Cup where Brazil were hammered 7-1 by Germany in the semi-finals and beaten 3-0 by the Netherlands in

the third-place playoff.Although many critics cried out

for an overhaul of the domestic game and the appointment of a foreign coach, Dunga was brought back as national team boss, four years after he failed to take Brazil beyond the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

His new backroom staff are expected to be in place by next month before he takes charge of the team for friendlies against Colombia in Miami on Sept. 5 and Ecuador in New Jersey four days later. They also face Ar-gentina in China in October and Turkey in Istanbul in November. Their first competitive fixtures will be in next year ’s Copa America in Chile.

BOSTON — Marco Borriello scored in the 90th minute to give Roma a 1-0 victory over Liverpool in a preseason friendly Wednesday night at Fenway Park. There were limited chances until Borriello volleyed in a corner from in front of goal.

“Both teams played with young players,” Roma coach Rudi Garcia said via a translator. “I am quite happy with the development we had.”

For the second time in three years, Fenway, the home of the Boston Red Sox, was transformed into the home of Liverpool, which is owned by Fenway Sports Group. John Henry, owner of the Red Sox, also is the controlling partner of Fenway Sports Group. Roma beat Liverpool 2-1 at Fenway two years ago.

“It’s the second time in the last couple of years,” Liverpool coach Brendan Rodgers said. “It was a great atmosphere. The support was great. I think it was for both — fantastic. For a preseason game, it was a very, very good game.” Roma is by NBA team, the Boston Celtics, minority owner Jim Pallotta.

Roma goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski made a diving save near the post on Rickie Lambert’s kick from just outside the box in the 57th minute.

Roma seemed to have the territorial edge in the first half and Liverpool a slight edge in the second in a match that had just a handful of shots on goal.

Liverpool rested a number of its star players, including captain Steven Gerrard, but the mostly red-clad crowd didn’t seem to mind.

“It’s going to be great for me to see our young players gain experience,” Rodgers said. Wednesday’s game was the first of four scheduled matches in the United States for Liverpool, which travels to Chicago, New York and Charlotte.

BERLIN - Several senior German lawmakers have raised the possibility of stripping Russia of its right to host the 2018 World Cup and the national soccer federation said it was very worried about events following the downing of a passenger plane over Ukraine.

Western states have blamed pro-Russian separatists battling Kiev’s forces in eastern Ukraine for the downing of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 on July 17 in which 298 people were killed.

The European Union has threat-ened to impose harsher economic sanctions on Russia, though on Tues-

day ministers delayed action for a few days.

Taking away Russia’s right to hold the soccer tournament may have a significantly greater impact than more economic sanctions, said Michael Fuchs, deputy head of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative bloc in the German parliament.

“The FIFA football association should think about whether Moscow is an appropriate host if it can’t even guarantee safe airways,” Fuchs told Handelsblatt Online, adding that Germany and France could take over the tournament if needed.

It would be unprecedented for the footballing world to deprive a country of hosting the World Cup once it has

been awarded. Russia was selected in 2010 to host the event.

But Peter Beuth, interior minister of the state of Hesse, told top-selling Bild daily that staging the World Cup in Russia in 2018 would be “unimagi-nable” if Russian President Vladimir Putin did not actively cooperate with the crash investigation.

Withdrawing the World Cup from Russia “should not be taboo”, said Stephan Mayer, a member of Ba-varia’s conservative Christian Social Union (CSU).

Germany’s DFB football fed-eration President Wolfgang Niersbach said Germany, which won the World Cup in Brazil this month, had very good relations with the Russian foot-

ball association and the World Cup organisation committee.

“But we are watching with very great concern political events in Rus-sia which could not be predicted at the time of the awarding of the World Cup in 2010,” he added in a statement which stopped short of backing Rus-sia’s right to host.

“PEACEFUL COOPERATION”

FIFA said earlier this week it could not comment. Germany’s FIFA execu-tive committee member, Theo Zwan-ziger, played down the possibility of moving the tournament.

“The World Cup has been awarded to Russia, contracts have been signed

and rights issued,” Zwanziger told Handelsblatt. He also rejected any calls for a boycott.

“A boycott in sport only rarely yields results and therefore I don’t think much of such suggestions,” Zwanziger told Handelsblatt, add-ing that Fuchs’ comments sounded populistic.

“Sport must go places even if it is painful. Only then can it stand up for its values and convictions such as tolerance, fairness and peaceful cooperation,” said Zwanziger.

Several Western nations, includ-ing the United States, boycotted the Moscow Olympic Games in 1980, in protest against the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan.

PASADENA, California — Manchester United made an impressive debut under coach Louis van Gaal on Wednesday night, with Wayne Rooney scoring twice late in the first half of a 7-0 friendly victory over the LA Galaxy.

a surprise, and there were some beautiful goals. They scored out of some good attacks.”

Danny Welbeck scored the first goal for Van Gaal, who has had limited work with his new club after leading the Netherlands to a third-place finish in Brazil earlier this month. United still outclassed the Galaxy in the friendly between two of David Beckham’s former clubs.

Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera also made their debuts while United won by a familiar American football score at the Rose Bowl, the vener-able college football stadium.

Van Gaal was hired to repair the 20-time English champions after David Moyes’ poor tenure. United finished seventh in Moyes’ only season as Alex Ferguson’s replace-ment after 26 years, failing even to qualify for the Europa League.

Rooney wasn’t United’s captain, ceding the job to Darren Fletcher, but the England star easily handled

his scoring chances. James wasn’t even listed on United’s 25-man squad, but the 20-year-old defender provided two outstanding finishes against the Galaxy’s ragged de-fense.

“I have nothing but respect for the show that Man United put on,” Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said. “Getting punished for mistakes and really getting a lesson on the speed of play, we can actually use it as a positive for them.”

Herrera, the Spanish midfielder acquired from Athletic Bilbao last month, looked sharp throughout the night. United scored its first goal under Van Gaal when Juan Mata set up Welbeck in the 13th minute for a low 25-yard shot off Jaime Penedo’s post.

After A.J. De La Garza was pe-nalized for a handball in the 42nd minute, Rooney easily buried the kick even though Penedo guessed correctly. Four minutes later, Wel-

beck’s centering pass went through the legs of Galaxy defender Tommy Meyer, who crumpled to the ground as Rooney walked the ball into Penedo’s net.

James put a sharp side-footed fin-ish on a pass from Young for United’s fourth goal in the 62nd minute. He then scored from distance on a deflec-tion in the 82nd minute before Young capitalized on defensive b l u n d e r s for two late goals.

Antara

Election observers have re-ported few abnormalities, and the

WASHINGTON — Presi-dent Barack Obama’s quick congratulation of Indonesia’s election victor Joko Widodo, even as the losing candidate re-jected the result, underscores Washington’s intent to deepen ties with Jakarta and support democracy in Southeast Asia.

(kmb24)

(kmb21)

Duran Duran suing own fan club Associated Press

“If the government does not enforce strict rules, 90 percent of the buildings in Bali will accommodate foreign architecture, including European one. Bali is inhabited by very heterogeneous population originating in diverse ethnic groups, including expatriates from various countries and they all need homes,” said the board of Real Estate Indonesia (REI) of Bali Chapter, I Wayan Sukarja.

He claimed that synthetic materials were cheaper. Nevertheless, the middle up class or lover of traditional architecture was still using local materials and to this day still existed. To preserve it, the firmness of government as a regulator was questioned and primarily the office handling the building permit should tighten the composi-

tion of local materials and traditional Balinese ornament. “Otherwise, most of the buildings in Bali will apply the architecture of outside Bali, including foreign style. In the long run, the architectural beauty of Bali will become extinct,” he said.

Moreover, various ethnic groups living in Bali needed residence or home. On that account, when applying the building permit (IMB), the rules could begin to prevail. When violating, the officer should be brave to dismantle the building and never be easily bribed. “Keep in mind, they want to invest in Bali, so they must comply with the rules in Bali. Bali is not owned by investors, Bali is owned by Balinese community and loved by the world

community,” said Sukarja. He reminded the Corruption Eradication Commission

(KPK) to more aggressively give a mental shock for the corrupter and corrupter prospective. On that account, he expected the officials should not use shortcuts to get wealth quickly by taking advantage of their position.

A property entrepreneur, Gede Semadi, stated that so far the Balinese architecture in Bali remained to impress its Balinese elements. “What makes something not good is when Balinese ornaments are made of synthetic materi-als. For example, I think the building of the Ngurah Rai Airport is really bad,” he said.

He also expected the government, in this case the licensing office, to seriously supervise. If found any violation, it should be dealt with firmly, not to mention the use foreign architecture. “I do not agree with the use of foreign architecture. There must be firmness of regional government in order that Balinese architecture can be dominant,” he said. (kmb36)

Workers are finishing a project in Bali Island. Some of project development of properties in Bali follow international architecture rather than Balinese architecture. The usage of Balinese ornaments increasingly diminishes. If it does exist, it usually makes use of synthetic materials in order to be more efficient.
