NEW YORK — Viola Davis’ history-making Emmy win and call for more diversity on TV thrilled most viewers of Sunday’s Emmycast.

But not soap star Nancy Lee Grahn. Instead, the long-time cast member of “General Hospital” had a Twitter fit.

“Emmys not venue 4 racial op-

portunity,” she declared in a tweet later deleted.

This was followed by a tweet hail-ing Davis, the star of ABC’s “How to Get Away With Murder” who became the first African-American to win a best actress Emmy, as “the bees knees.” But Grahn said Davis has never been discriminated against.

Before long, Grahn seemed to cool off, tweeting that Davis is “a goddess.”

Finally came a string of apolo-gies.

“Color me heartbroken,” tweeted Grahn, observing, “Twitter can bring out the best & sadly tonight the worst of us.” (ap)

NEW YORK — Rocker Ryan Adams said covering Taylor Swift’s entire “1989” album was “incred-ibly humbling” and helped him explore himself more deeply as a musician.

Adams’ version of “1989” was digitally released Monday. Swift released the original album — her first full-blown pop record — last October.

“It’s actually incredibly hum-bling to find a connection with someone else’s words and someone else’s songs and to open yourself up and to feel them fully, and find out where those stories take you,” Adams, 40, said in an interview last week. “It felt no less genuine than any song I’ve ever written for myself.”

So far, Swift’s fifth album has sold 5.2 million units and launched multiple hits, including No.1s like “Shake It Off,” ‘’Blank Space” and “Bad Blood.” Adams’ interpretation of “1989” offers a slowed-down take on her upbeat anthems.

“I got to work different parts of my brain, different parts of my heart and different parts of the musical aspects of my personality,” Adams said of covering Swift’s music. “It’s really its own thing. ...It’s not the same record.”

After completing his version, the singer-songwriter-producer played it for 25-year-old Swift before tak-ing it any further. He namedropped Bob Mould as one his favorite musi-cians, but added in the same breath: “But then I also love all those songs on (Swift’s) ‘Fearless’ (album). I don’t really have a place where my music begins and ends.”

Adams said he has known Swift for about 4 years and counts himself as a fan.

Adams released his debut album, “Heartbreaker,” in 2000. His 2014 self-titled record, his 14th studio release, earned him two Grammy nominations earlier this year, in-cluding best rock album. He has also found success as a producer for acts like Willie Nelson and Jenny Lewis.

Adams says in 1989 — the year, not the album — he remembers being in love with music and being aware he wanted to make a career out of it.

“I was already collecting al-bums. By 15, I was skateboarding, I had gotten my first guitar,” he said. “I had my first record player and I remember I got my first couple of real albums that were my own records and I was really excited about them.” (ap)

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Cer-emony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Ga-lungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beau-tifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully orna-ments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

UBUD - Full Moon Yoga has come to Bali in a dramatically beautiful location, offering the unique experience of performing Moon Salutations on a river-edge wooden platform surrounded by ricefields and the lush Sayan Valley forest.

Perched on the banks of the sacred Ayung River at Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan, the new Dharma Shanti River Terrace provides a breathtaking open-air venue to extend upon the resort’s uplifting wellbeing and yoga programs, with dynamic new classes. A highlight of this is the Full Moon ‘Purnama’ Yoga, a first for Bali in a spectacular river-edge setting, under the glow of the full moon and twinkling stars.

“Every full moon, or ‘purnama’, is a sacred day in Bali, when Balinese-Hindus honor an-cestral gods and thank them for their protection with offerings and ceremonies across the island,” said Luisa Anderson, Regional Director of Spa for Four Seasons Resorts. “This is intended to counter negative forces and replenish our vital energy. Our new Full Moon Yoga program is inspired by the uplifting energy of this important day on the Balinese calendar, enabling guests to honor the ‘yin’ or divine feminine side with Moon Salutations, to counterbalance the ‘yang’ or masculine nature of classical Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar) of day yoga.”

Moon Salutations are believed to cool-down fiery impulses and ‘hot’ emotions, allowing cre-ative energy to flow. The first Full Moon Yoga was on 29 August, and the program continues at 7.30pm on each full moon: 28 September, 27

October, 26 November, and 25 December when it coincides with Christmas Day. Sessions are complimentary for in-house guests of Four Sea-sons Resorts Bali, while non-resident guests are welcome at a rate of Rp300,000++ per person.

Also a tranquil venue for private Meditation sessions, the River Terrace follows the recent launch of the 100% bamboo Dharma Shanti Yoga Bale, located just across the ricefields, where guests are offered a dynamic series of wellness activities. Yoga classes at the bale in-clude Bali’s first certified AntiGravity® Yoga, created and founded by former gymnast and dancer Christopher Harrison; Laughter Yoga; as well as complimentary Sunrise, Power or Hatha Yoga. The resort’s resident Wellness Mentor, Ibu Fera, leads the popular Life Talk series that guides guests towards inner peace, happiness, stress management and compassion.

In addition to the resort’s weekly wellbeing program, it also offers an exclusive series of inter-national yoga masters-in-residence, with the next ‘yoga masters to the stars’ featuring Summer Dien (September 14-20, October 5-10 and October 12-17) and Faye Riches (November 9-21). The visiting masters bring their own individual styles for guests to further develop their own practice, complementing the resort’s own classes.

Dharma Shanti Yoga Bale -- whose name means ‘path to peace’ in Sanskrit -- is nestled in a quiet corner of the resort surrounded by lush forest at the bottom of the Sayan Valley, with views over ricefields to the fast-flowing Ayung River.

Before I Nyoman Sama could learn to paint for longer time, Bonnet decided to return to his home country in 1958. As getting much inter-ested in painting, he then continued his learn-ing under a traditional painters from Ubud, I Grudug and I Turun. Having had enough provision, he came back to his home village and continued the pursuit of painting.

Approximately in 1969, career path of Sama was followed by two young men named I Ketut Sudarsana and I Wayan Jiwa who were interested in learning to paint and then followed by I Made Astawa and I Nyoman Maliawan. Not long after, the four students of Sama have been able to sell their works. The painting works were sold to one of the art shops in Batuan, Sukawati. “This young painter from Keliki Kawan once worked at art shop to enrich his experience and establish his painting techniques. Ultimately, he was indirectly influenced by the painting style developing in Batuan,” said Rinu.

Around 1977, said Rinu, one of the painters from Keliki Kawan, namely I Made Astawa, decided to switch from paper media to canvas by combining the Ubud and Batuan painting style. Combination of the two painting styles result in a quite unique style. Apparently, the uniqueness of his painting intrigued a collector of paintings from Germany, Peter Hentschi. On one occasion in 1982, the art collector advised him to minimize the painting format without having to reduce the quality and eliminate the style he had. The advice was responded positively by Astawa so that he produced postcard-size paintings.

“Arguably, the painter I Made Astawa is a story-making figure in the development of postcard painting in Bali. He has pioneered a unique painting that remains to develop properly so far,” he said. Although working on small-size medium, he is still capable of displaying various themes of painting with the same number of objects like in the large-size paintings.

Due to small size, the postcard painting was sold well when booming travelers hit Bali. Such a success then inspired the other artists to paint with a similar uniqueness. “Many painters from outside Keliki Kawan also develop postcard-size painting,” said Rinu. (ian)

However, the creativity of the Keliki Kawan artists is still obliged to be appreci-ated as it further enriches the treasure of Balinese painting.

“Another important value is that the postcard painting proves that Balinese art-ists have diligence and exactitude in doing the creativity. Just imagine, they can paint with great details on a very limited medium area,” said Made Rinu.

Rinu who has specifically researched the painting prevalent at Keliki Kawan does not deny that postcard painting clearly has deep impact on traditional painting style of Ubud and Batuan. Such impact is certainly legitimate in view of the history on the birth of postcard painting indeed originating from Ubud. “From the tracing on the development of postcard painting as the central point of my research, it can be concluded that the painting was inspired by the typical painting of Ubud that later on was combined with distinctive style of Batuan,” she said.

The interest in the development of post-card painting was also stated by artist and lecturer at the same department, I Ketut Murdana. According to him, the techniques of postcard painting are very complicated and detailed. To express their creativity on paper media of postcard size, the painters should use special equipment to paint. For example, a painter must replace the pen with painting tools made from palm stick. Their brush is also specially made from fur with a very smooth texture by utilizing cocoon as the size regulator.

“Although the postcard painting style adopts the Ubud and Batuan painting style, I remain to see a touch of high creativity. Amid the so advanced painting equipment technology in this era, Balinese paint-ers are still challenged to find their own unique and distinctive painting tools. To create contour of lines or sweep color over the so limited space, indeed there are no factory-made tools that can do it perfectly. In reality, the painters of Keliki Kawan are able to overcome all the obstacles in creat-ing painting tools in particular. The making of postcard painting requires diligence and concentration including qualified painting techniques,” he praised.

Murdana asserted that typical postcard painting of Keliki Kawan is a form of conti-nuity of tradition developed maturely. He did not dismiss if the development of postcard painting tends to want a practical and easy souvenir to carry. Such mini-format painting is an intelligent answer from the demands without having to ‘pawn’ the essence of the art in terms of quality. Technically, it has even a more elaborate workmanship. “Al-though the creation of this painting is market oriented, I do not see any sacrilege process in terms of quality of the art in the postcard painting,” he said. (ian)

History of postcard painting

The Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design (FSrD) at the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar, Ni Made rinu, said that the milestone of postcard painting was initiated around 1957 and occurred by chance. At that time, the Keliki Kawan hamlet held a religious ceremony in which one of a series of the ceremonies is melasti or purifi-catory rite to Campuhan river in Ubud. On that occasion, I Nyoman Sama (one of the Keliki villagers participating in the melasti procession—Ed) stopped at the art studio belonging to rudolf Bonnet. He expressed his desire to learn to paint. Bonnet dwelling in Ubud was glad to welcome him.

The company said Monday it had removed tainted applications from its App Store, days after security researchers revealed the breach of Apple’s normally secure system which aims to weed out infected applications.

In China, more than 300 apps including the hugely popular instant

messaging service WeChat and ride-hailing app Didi Kuaidi were infected with the “XcodeGhost” malware, potentially allowing access to private user data including passwords, Chi-nese state-run media said.

The reports were a blow to the US firm, which has Greater China as its second-largest market.

Apple told AFP that it had re-moved the affected apps from its online store.

“To protect our customers we’ve removed the apps from the App Store that we know have been cre-ated with this counterfeit software and we are working with the devel-opers to make sure they’re using the proper version of (Apple software) Xcode to rebuild their apps.”

Apple’s reaction came days after US-based cybersecurity firm Palo Alto Networks uncovered the flaw, saying the malware came from

computer code uploaded to Baidu’s cloud file-sharing service used by Chinese app developers.

Anti-censorship group Greatfire.org, which tracks Chinese Internet restrictions, called the news “the most widespread and significant spread of malware in the history of the Apple app store, anywhere in the world.”

Apple, which reviews and ap-proves each application, has gen-erally kept its apps malware-free, analysts say.

But Alan Cockerill at the US

security firm Lookout said “there are no perfect systems.”

In a blog post, Cockerill said that “while Apple has traditionally done an excellent job of keeping malware out of its App Store, malicious ac-tors are always looking for new ways to break through.”

“The malicious code may have hundreds of millions of victims,” Cockerill said.

Johannes Ullrich at the SANS Technology Institute said that “the real problem here is this malicious code made it past the Apple App Store check-in process.”

“Apparently there is some trust between Apple and some of these developers of large applications like WeChat so these applications aren’t necessarily tested as carefully if they are coming from a name-brand company,” Ullrich said.

Palo Alto Networks said the mal-ware was hidden in the Xcode soft-ware required for apps and made its way into applications without the knowledge of developers.

But once installed, the malware could allow a third party to gain access to private and personal infor-mation on an Apple device.

The malware can issue a fake dia-log alert to gain access to passwords, or hijack a browser to direct users to a fake website. It can also read and write data in the user’s clipboard, which could be used to get pass-words, according to Palo Alto.

Only Chinese apps were known so far to have been infected -- although some of those, including WeChat, are also used outside China.

Chinese apps are thought to be vulnerable because developers often bypass the official, more secure, Apple channels, which can be slowed by Chinese Internet monitoring. Tencent, which makes the WeChat software -- used by 500 million in China -- said it had repaired the flaw and that there had been “no theft (or) leakage of users’ information or money.”

The makers of app Didi Kuaidi, which claims 200 million regular users, also reported a fix and said no user privacy was compromised. (afp)

“We will speed up the increase in the number of Mandarin tourist guides. We have made coordina-tion with the government of Bali Province in order that the needs for Mandarin guides can be met,” said the Special Staff of the Ministry of Tourism, I Gusti Ngurah Putra, accompanied by the Expert Staff for Economy and Tourism Area Husen Alaydrus, at the Bali Tour-ism Institute (STP) Nusa Dua Bali, Friday (Sep. 18).

Minister of Tourism, said Ngu-rah Putra, commissioned the In-stitutional Affairs to speed up the procurement of foreign language guides, especially that of Mandarin language. The number of Chinese travelers is constantly increasing.

“In Bali, there are 600 tourist guides. We will help resolve if there are hampering regulations, which requirements can be eliminated without reducing the quality,” he said.

Director of the Bali Tourism Institute (STPNB), Dewa Gede Ngurah Byomantara, said that his institution is also aware of the condition, whereas there are great opportunities to get involved in the tourism industry. “English has become the standard in our institu-tion. Nevertheless, we also teach other foreign languages ??such as French, German and Japanese. We have owned the lecturer for a long time,” he said.

What about the Mandarin lan-guage? According to Byomantara, his institution has been working hard to bring in lecturer of Manda-rin language from China. However, due to constrained by bureaucratic matters, the lecturer cannot get in

Bali.“We’ve made coordination with

the Consul General of China and it will be ready to help bring in volunteer teachers to teach Man-darin language at our college,” said Byomantara.

Moreover, the tourism market segment is directed to China. He said to have a trouble in finding a lecturer in the country having the expertise in Mandarin. “It’s rather hard. Overseas it is easy to get one because the results are quite good. Here more people are somewhat reluctant because they consider it in terms of revenue,” he said.

Actually, he added, many stu-dents want to learn Mandarin. It is motivated by the prospects in the

future that are quite good in keep-ing with the booming Chinese travelers coming to this Island of the Gods.

The Expert Staff for Economy and Tourism Area, Alaydrus Hus-en, said that the target of foreign travelers visiting Indonesia in 2019 reaches 20 million people. The certified hotel business is targeted to reach 2,000. On that account, the Ministry of Tourism undertakes institutional tourism development, especially in terms of human resources, including the development of higher education and increasing tourism compe-tence. Related to teaching staff, he will improve it in terms of quality and capacity. (kmb36)

BANGLI - Farmers at Subak Selatnyuhan, Susut subdistrict, are worried about the dwarf condition of their paddy plants. It happens as the aftermath of sluggish water flow into their paddy fields coupled with the absence of rain.

A farmer, I Wayan Kilo, said that his paddy plants have now been one and a half month old so that they should still require a lot of water. However, as faced with dry season, the water flow becomes sluggish. As a result, the growth of his paddy plants becomes dwarf and the leaves look yellowish green. In contrast to the quality of normal paddy plants, the leaves are green. “The water starts to run sluggishly and it never rains,” he explained.

He also stated that the less normal growth of paddy plants spreads across the area of 28 hectares. It entirely happens due to the absence of rain.

He is optimistic that the dwarf growth of paddy plants will not result in crop failure. How-ever, the growth of rice grain is estimated not to be maximal. “I think it will not cause harvest failure. At least the rice grain will experience less maximal growth,” he said.

Similar opinion is also expressed by another farmer, I Wayan Puja. His one-month old paddy plants have looked yellow. Nevertheless, he said that he remains lucky because he has been able to plant amid this dry season. “Thank God I can still plant rice. Here we use irrigation water in turn. Thus, the water stays available though it is sometimes sluggish,” he said.

In addition, Puja added that other than ir-rigation water issue, he is also made distraught by the operating cost continuing to increase. He must also pay the increasing tractor rental from IDR 14,000 per 100 square meters to IDR 18,000. “Besides, the price of fertilizer also increases again as much as IDR 5,000 per sack,” he said.

Responding to the condition, the Head of the Bangli Agriculture Agency for Susut office, I Wayan Arimbawa, confirmed that inadequate water will cause the growth of paddy plants to grow less maximal. However, he stressed that not all the paddy plants go through dwarf growth. He is confident that no farmers will face crop failure in this sea-son. “Dwarf condition is experienced by few plants only, while the rest grows normally. We are sure there will be no crop failure,” he said. (kmb45)

SAN FRANCISCO — Apple is speeding up work on a project that could lead to the California tech giant building its own electric car, according to a new report. The maker of iPhones and iPads is tri-pling the number of engineers on the project, code-named Titan, and has set a “ship date” of 2019, the Wall Street Journal said Monday.

The newspaper said that could just be a target for engineers to sign off on the design, not necessarily when a car would be available for sale.

Apple declined comment Mon-day on the Journal report, which cited unidentified sources.

While Apple has never officially confirmed it’s planning to build a car, there are strong indications it’s

at least interested in automotive technology. In recent months, Apple has hired a number of engineers with backgrounds in automotive and battery design.

Apple representatives also met in May with officials at an automo-tive testing facility located east of San Francisco. Site officials later confirmed to The Associated Press

that Apple requested information about using their facility.

And last month, an Apple attor-ney met with officials at Califor-nia’s Department of Motor Vehicles to discuss the state’s regulations for self-driving cars. A department spokesman confirmed that meeting to The Associated Press on Monday, after it was first reported by the

Guardian newspaper.A number of automakers and

tech companies, including Google and Uber, are working on technol-ogy for autonomous and electric-powered vehicles. Google an-nounced last week that it’s hired former Hyundai U.S. CEO John Krafcik to run its self-driving car program. (ap)

The trouble in Croatia started early at a new transit camp in the eastern village of Opatovac, where migrants streamed to the gates in great numbers, overwhelming authorities. Adding to the chaos, people inside the camp mobbed the gates and demanded to leave â?? since they had been promised they would stay only 24 hours before being allowed to continue their journeys. Police pushed people back from both sides of the gate, but tensions remained high.

In Brussels, EU interior min-isters aim to agree on a plan to share 120,000 refugees in countries worst hit by the influx among their

other EU partners. The Czech Re-public, Hungary and Slovakia are vehemently opposed to the quota plan, while Latvia and Poland are also skeptical. On Wednesday, EU leaders will hold an emergency summit.

The disarray in Opatovac illus-trates the struggles faced by Croatia as it seeks to control an unprec-edented influx of people fleeing conflict and poverty in the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

Croatia set up a migrant recep-tion operation to try to bring order to the unrelenting chaos that has gripped the country since Sept. 15, when Hungary closed its border

with Serbia. That decision diverted waves of people seeking refuge to Croatia â?? a nation of 4.2 million that is among the 28-member EU’s poorest. Croatia is demanding a unified response from the EU on how to tackle the surge.

Meanwhile, people are on the move all over southeastern Europe. Austrian police say about 1,000 new arrivals are expected soon at the main border crossing point with Hungary, after nearly 10,000 people trekked into the country. Police spokesman Helmut Marban said Tuesday that most of Monday’s arrivals at the Nickelsdorf crossing east of Vienna had already been brought to emergency shelters elsewhere in the country.

Marban said Hungary is bringing the 1,000 people expected Tuesday to its side of the border by train. From there, the migrants usually walk into Austria.(ap)

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan on Tuesday postponed the execution of the country’s first known paraplegic on death-row, about an hour before he was to be hanged, official said. The man’s family welcomed the development with relief and urged authorities to spare his life on medical grounds.

The day before, Pakistan’s Supreme Court refused to halt the execution of 43-year-old Abdul Basit, who has been paralyzed from the waist down since contracting meningitis in prison in 2010 and uses a wheelchair. Basit has been on death row since 2009, convicted of murdering a man in a financial dispute in Punjab province.

According to prison official Mohammad Safdar, a magistrate made the decision to postpone the death sentence after talking to Basit early Tuesday. The hanging was initially scheduled for just before dawn.

There were no further details on the postponement and it was unclear if another date for the executions was set. Under Pakistani law, authori-ties can delay executions on medical grounds but a convict can only be pardoned by the country’s president. There was no immediate statement from President Mamnoon Hussain.

Basit’s family members were waiting outside the high-security prison in the city of Faisalabad in eastern Punjab province for the sentence to be carried out so they could take the body for burial. His sister, Shugufta Sultana, said they were “terrified and nervous.”

“We were waiting for bad news but God gave a new life to my brother and his execution was postponed,” she told The Associated Press over the phone from Faisalabad.

Basit’s lawyers and the rights group Reprieve had petitioned Pakistan’s top court to halt the execution, arguing that hanging him would constitute cruel and inhuman punishment.

On Tuesday, Reprieve’s caseworker Kate Higham also welcomed the postponement, saying the execution would have violated “both the prison’s own rules and Pakistan’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment.”

Earlier, Amnesty International also urged Pakistan to halt Basit’s execu-tion and called for a moratorium on all executions in the country.

According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, authorities have hanged 236 people since lifting a 2008 moratorium on executions in December, after a deadly Taliban attack on a school in the northwestern city of Peshawar killed 150 people, mostly children. But only one in 10 of the 236 prisoners executed since then have been convicted of a terror attack. International rights groups, including Reprieve and Amnesty, have urged Pakistan to stop executions.(ap)

Migrants scuffle with Croatian police; EU to hold talks

OPATOVAC, Croatia - Scuffles broke out between Croatian police and people fleeing conflict and poverty in search of better lives as European Union interior ministers gathered in Brussels on Tuesday to try to overcome deep differences about how to manage the refugee emergency. AMLAPURA - The government

of Karangasem County is consid-ered indecisive in cracking down on the rampant illegal quarrying activities. A member of the Karan-gasem House of Representative, I Gede Dana, said on Monday (Sep. 21) that there is something wrong in the internal of relevant agen-cies. Supposedly, if it has violated the regional bylaw (Perda), and clearly illegal, there is no reason for relevant agencies not to crack down on it.

This Chairman of the PDI-P Karangasem asked the government to consistently enforce the existing regional bylaw so that it will not become like a toothless tiger. The rule is created to be enforced, not to be broken. He deeply regretted this

condition. Moreover, this condition has taken place in Karangasem for many years, and no one dares to enforce the regulations. “The logic is simple. If it is illegal, then it must be disciplined, not even been allowed,” he said. This young poli-tician from Datah village suspected there are certain parties having influenced the authorized agencies like the municipal police that do not dare to take action decisively.

“Municipal Police have a lead-ership. If the leadership tells not to take action (curb), certainly their men will not dare to move,” he said. It is not just a matter of law enforcement. According to him, the government must also have visionary thinking about the future of local communities. For

example, if the quarrying center is closed, local government must create new job opportunities. Thus, it will not increase the un-employment rate in Karangasem. So far, he did not see if the county government has made such efforts. On the contrary, currently the il-legal quarry activities continue to run, although it has exceeded the maximum limit excavation depth of 500 meters.

According to him, if this is al-lowed, it will worsen the environ-mental condition. His institution hoped the next regent of Karan-gasem can provide ideal solution for the problem regarding the environmental issues having taken place for many years. A community leader of Karangasem, Nyoman

Sadra, recently assessed that the quarry activity in Karangasem has no longer heed the rules. The quarry activities will only pass on environ-mental damage that is not easily restored. He urged the government of Karangasem to more seriously develop tourism having been initi-ated with the concept of spiritual tourism, not to dredge the foot of Mount Agung continuously.

“If Karangasem wants to be de-veloped (in tourism), all the quarry-ing activities must be closed,” said Sadra when attending a workshop in Amlapura, recently.

As reported previously, the entire quarry activities at Sebudi village, Selat, currently no longer have a permit. The quarry permit is only issued by the KPPT Karan-

gasem for Bebandem (2 permits) and Kubu (34 permits). However, though they are still illegal, tens of quarry points are still operating to dredge the foot of Mount Agung up to these days. Ironically, none of the relevant agencies dare to crack down on them.

Against this problem, the Chief of Karangasem Municipal Police, Iwan Suparta, argued that he has not got information about the quarry activities that still go on at Sebudi village. He just would like to check back the quarry at Sebudi village before taking further steps as set out in the regional bylaw. “We will check it first to location. If it does (still operate without a license) of course we will take decisive ac-tion,” said Iwan. (kmb31)

The arrival of the business-men led by Chairman of the P3I Bali, Nengah Tamba, was to meet the Acting Regent of Badung, Nyoman Harry Yudha Saka. The businessmen entourage demanded the Acting Regent of Badung to provide justice because the PAP only provides the opportunity to outside and foreign businessmen to work on the advertising project around the airport, without giving it to local businessmen.

“We come here (Badung Civic Center—Ed) to express our griev-ances to the regent. As local businessmen, we do not accept the attitude of the PAP that prefers to the outside businessmen,” said Tamba.

Additionally, the P3I Bali has also reported that the billboards in ??the airport area have no permit or can be said to be illegal. The unlicensed jumbo size billboard is even not denied by the Head of the Badung Integrated Licensing Office (BPPT), Made Sutama, who was present to accompany the acting regent.

“This issue has been conveyed just now (Monday—Ed) to the acting regent. Essentially, we lo-cal entrepreneurs would like to demand for justice,” he said.

As a state-owned company,

the airport, said Tamba, should provide business opportunities for local businessmen, not the other way round, causes them to go bankrupt. “The PAP is a state-owned company. It should give a hope and good business op-portunity to local communities. The entry of large businessmen in the airport means that this is not a good example showed by the state-owned company,” he said.

In addition to demanding for justice, Tamba also had the licens-ing of the billboards investigated. He is confident that the jumbo-sized billboard is unlicensed and does not comply with the Regent Regulation No. 80/2014 regarding advertisement zonation.

“We also ask about the permit submission process, whether it is appropriate or not. If it runs properly (comply with the rules), we welcome anyway. But, the problem is that it does not have a permit,” he explained. He said the presence of the unauthorized billboard in the airport area has been known by the BPPT Badung. “From the recent meeting, the re-gent gives exceptional response. He agrees to stop the major proj-ect at the airport,” he said.

According to Tamba, the acting

regent of Badung will even soon go down in order to crack down on the illegal billboards violating the rules. “It is said that the acting regent will go down. We will wait for his firm stance up to a week. Otherwise we will come again,” he threatened.

On the occasion, Tamba also complained about the tender process that is very burdensome to local businessmen and tends to be unreasonable. Moreover, he is pessimistic to participate in the bid because he will certainly

get eliminated due to very severe requirements. For example, the company’s turnover must be at least IDR 35 billion and the payment should be made in US dollar. “How can we participate in the tender because the re-quirements are so severe?” he complained.

In response to the issue, Co-General Manager of the Ang-kasa Pura I (PAP), IGN Ardita, when asked for his confirmation explained that the advertising issue at the airport is handled by

special unit including the permit. “We have a special management handling it (advertisement—Ed). Nevertheless, we will check it again,” he said.

Answering the complaints regarding the difficult tender requirements, Ardita firmly re-buffed. According to him, the ten-der process has been made trans-parent and conducted by Strategic Business Unit (SBU). “It is the SBU conducting the tender and it has complied with the standards,” he concluded. HONG KONG — The Asian Develop-ment Bank cut its growth forecast for the region’s developing economies, citing a softer outlook for China and India and a delayed recovery in the world’s advanced industrialized nations. The Manila-based lender said in a report Tuesday that it now predicts the region’s economies will expand 5.8 percent this year and 6.0 percent next year. That’s down from 6.3 percent growth that it forecast in March for both years.

The report, which covers 45 economies,

cut forecasts for some of the region’s big-gest countries including China, India, South Korea and Indonesia.

“Developing Asia is expected to con-tinue to be the largest contributing region to global growth despite the moderation, but there are a number of headwinds in play such as currency pressures, and wor-ries about capital outflows,” ADB’s Chief Economist Shang-jin Wei said.

The Chinese economy, which grew a re-vised 7.3 percent last year, is now tipped to

slow to 6.8 percent growth in 2015 and 6.7 percent in 2016. That’s down from 7.2 per-cent and 7.0 percent forecast previously.

“Despite robust consumption demand, economic activity fell short of expectations in the first eight months of the year as in-vestments and exports underperformed” in China, the report said. ADB said it expects the pressure to ease once the recovery in the world’s advanced economies picks up, strengthening global demand.

Much of the slowdown in China, the

world’s second-biggest economy, is self-imposed as part of the ruling Communist Party’s effort to replace a worn-out model based on trade and investment with more self-sustaining growth driven by domestic consumption.

India is forecast to grow 7.4 percent in 2015 and 7.8 percent in 2016. The bank trimmed both forecasts by 0.4 percentage points, citing slower progress on major reforms, which has hindered investment, and sagging exports. (ap)

“I want to give clarification about alleged gift from the president director of Pelindo to Minister of State Enterprises in the form of goods. The goods are in the form of furniture. The documents are complete here,” Masinton said at the KPK office on Tuesday.

He said the gift is valued at around Rp200 million without saying the purpose of giving the the gift.

“I do not know what the purpose of giving the gift. What is clear is that the law forbids state officials or civil servants to give or accept gifts. Here it is clear the giver was the president director of Pelindo II and the recipient is the minister of state enterprises,” Masinton said.

He said the case took place in March 2015 and at that time until now the president director of Pelindo is RJ Lino and the minister of state enterprises is Rini Sumartni.

At the same time the members of the Trade Union of the Jakarta International Container (JICT) staged a demonstration in front of KPK to report alleged corruption in the process of extension of the JICT contract between Pelindo II and Hutchinson Port Holding (HPH).

“(We) report indication of irregularities in the process of exten-sion of JICT contract. It was not in line with the law. The Law No. 17 of 2008 says the concession is made with the approval of the Communications Ministry via the port authority,” the chairman of the trade union Nofa Sofyan said.

He said JICT is worth US$854 million and HPH paid only US$215 million for its share. That should make it a 21 per-cent shareholder, not 49 percent as has been proposed by RJ Lino.

Nova also accused RJ Lino of accepting gift in souvenir worth Rp50 million from the Managing Director of Hutchison Canning Fok in Hong Kong on June 25, 2015.

KPK has not started investigation of the alleged corruption, deputy chairman of KPK Johan Budi said.

Johan Budi said the case reported to KPK is not the same as the case involving Pelindo II being investigated by police.

Police has raided the office of the president director of Pelindo II over alleged corruption in the procurement of a number of mobile cranes valued at Rp45 billion. (ant)

JAKARTA - A critically endan-gered Sumatran elephant who had patrolled Indonesia’s jungles to help protect threatened habitats has been killed for his tusks, an official said Monday, sparking a surge of anger online.

Yongki, a tame creature who worked with teams of elephant keepers, was found dead close to the camp where he lived in a na-tional park on the western island of Sumatra, said park official Timbul Batubara.

His one-metre (three-foot) tusks had been hacked off, leaving just bloody stumps, and his legs still bore the chains put on him by his keepers to ensure he stayed in the camp. There are estimated to be less than 3,000 Sumatran elephants remaining in the wild. They are frequently targeted by poachers for their tusks, which fetch a high price for use in Chinese traditional medicine.

Batubara, from the Bukit Barisan Selatan national park, said it was

not yet known how Yongki was killed.

His body, which was found Fri-day, bore no bullet wounds but he had a blue tongue. Elephants have in the past been poisoned.

Yongki, aged about 35, was well-known among the local “mahouts” or elephant keepers. Nazaruddin, the head of the Indonesian Mahout Forum, said keepers in the area were “very shaken”.

“We are mourning the lost of an elephant who has been helping us in

handling conflicts and helping for-est rangers patrol the forest, and he was a good elephant,” Nazaruddin, who goes by one name, told AFP.

The elephant was involved in patrols aimed at reducing tensions, with the tame elephants stopping wild elephants from rampaging through villages. The patrols also help rangers keep a lookout for illegal logging and poaching that threaten Indonesia’s vast rain for-ests.

There was anger on social media

after pictures of the elephant’s body circulated, with users posting com-ments on Twitter next to the hashtag #RIPYongki.

“It is time we enforce life sen-tences for hunters of legally pro-tected animals,” said Facebook user Aprilia Putri.

Protection group the Internation-al Union for Conservation of Nature classifies the Sumatran elephant as critically endangered. It is one of many species that are under threat in Indonesia. (afp)

JAKARTA - Australia’s trade min-ister called Monday for Indonesia to set an annual quota for cattle imports to bring more certainty for Australian exporters and ease tensions between the neighbours on the issue.

Indonesia is the biggest market for Australia’s lucrative live export trade, which employs thousands of people.

But the issue has often been a flashpoint, most recently when Jakarta unexpectedly slashed im-ports of Australian cattle in the third quarter of this year by 80 percent.

During a one-day visit to Jakarta, Australian Trade Minister Andrew Robb said setting an annual quota for cattle imports would be a “more stable arrangement”, instead of de-

ciding on the figure each quarter, as Indonesia does now.

“We can make sure we’ve got the supply when it’s wanted here in Indo-nesia,” Robb told reporters, ahead of talks with his Indonesian counterpart Tom Lembong.

He said such an arrangement would only require setting a “base level” of cattle for the year, and In-donesia could later increase the quota if needed.

Indonesia insisted earlier this year its decision to slash imports was aimed at achieving self-sufficiency in beef supplies. But it sparked concerns that tensions caused by Jakarta’s execution of two Australian drug smugglers in April was affecting trade ties.

However beef prices soared and

butchers went on strike following the quota cut, prompting Jakarta to swiftly issue permits to import tens of thousands more cattle.

Relations between the neighbours have historically been stormy but hit a new low following the executions, with Canberra taking the unprec-edented step of recalling its ambas-sador from Jakarta.

However Australian Foreign Min-ister Julie Bishop insisted this month that ties between the neighbours were back in “very good shape”.

Robb’s visit came a week after Malcolm Turnbull ousted Tony Ab-bott in a swift internal party coup to become Australian prime minister. Turnbull made major changes to the cabinet but Robb retained his post. (afp)

Osborne, Britain’s Chancellor of the Exchequer, visited the Shanghai stock exchange, which has seen its benchmark index plummet nearly 40 percent since June as a bubble bursts, while worries over flagging Chinese growth have shaken world markets.

A day earlier Osborne agreed with top Chinese officials in Beijing to study the linking of trading on the London and Shanghai bourses, and the possibility of China’s cen-tral bank issuing short-term bonds denominated in the yuan currency in London.

“Whatever the headlines, regard-

less of the challenges, we shouldn’t be running away from China,” Os-borne told business leaders and stu-dents packed onto the trading floor of the exchange.

“Let’s stick together to grow our economies,” he said, adding he deliberately chose to visit the Shanghai bourse, which he called the “epicentre of the volatility in financial markets”.

China recently revised downward its 2014 economic growth figure to 7.3 percent, the weakest in 24 years. In both the first and second quarter this year, growth remained stuck at

7.0 percent.“China’s undergoing difficult

change -- but it’s still a huge con-tributor to our economic future,” Osborne said.

Valuations on the Shanghai ex-change alone have dropped by more than $2.4 trillion since mid-June, after a 150 percent surge in the previous 12 months, lifted by a borrowing-driven rally encouraged by authorities.

Chinese officials responded with a rescue package, whose hallmarks include banning big shareholders from selling and government buying of shares.

The package has raised questions over Beijing’s management and drawn criticism for running counter to promised economic reforms.

But the Shanghai market rose

nearly two percent to the day’s high during Osborne’s speech, and while it trimmed some of the gains later it closed up 0.92 percent, in part because of news of the possible stocks link.

Britain and China have agreed to conduct a feasibility study on con-necting stock markets, which the British Treasury said in a statement Tuesday would offer investors from both countries more opportunities and provide Chinese firms with financing.

Shanghai and China’s special ad-ministrative region of Hong Kong, a former British colony, have already linked their markets -- allowing in-vestors in each location to trade select shares on the other exchange.

China is studying a similar

scheme for its second stock ex-change in Shenzhen, which borders Hong Kong, but recent market vola-tility is widely expected to delay the launch.

The Chinese and British central banks will also increase the size of bilateral currency swaps, though no details were given at the close of a high-level dialogue in Beijing on Monday.

Osborne threw his support behind China’s attempt to have its yuan, also known as the renminbi (RMB), to be included in the International Mon-etary Fund’s select group of reserve currencies.

A surprise devaluation of the yuan last month sparked worries over the economy and caused capital outflows from China. (afp)

The proposed law stipulated that all social media users would have to save plain-text versions of mes-sages for 90 days. Services such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Viber and Google Chat encrypt messages as they are sent between users.

There was widespread outrage online over the threat to privacy and the possibility of prosecution for those who refused to save their communications.

The uproar comes just days before India’s Prime Minister Nar-endra Modi heads to Silicon Valley where he is to meet technology entrepreneurs to persuade them to invest in India. Modi is scheduled

to meet the chief executives of Mi-crosoft and Google as well as visit the Facebook campus where he will address a townhall-style meeting with the social media giant’s co-founder Mark Zuckerberg.

India has more than 350 million Internet users and that number is expected to grow rapidly as more people use smartphones to go online.

Communications and Informa-tion Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the govern-ment was withdrawing its draft encryption policy. The amendment to an existing telecoms law would be redrafted and would not affect most people.

“I wish to make it very clear that it is just a draft and not the view of the government,” Prasad told a press conference.

The proposed law would also have required foreign companies using encryption to submit their software to scrutiny by Indian government agencies.

Prasad said the government respects the right to freedom of expression but is also trying to enhance security as the volume of Internet communications and other online activity by individuals, gov-ernment agencies and companies increases enormously. The govern-ment has set an Oct. 16 deadline for public feedback on the law.

Modi has been a keen user of social media such as Twitter and Facebook to conduct diplomacy, congratulate athletes and explain his political agenda to the public. (ap)

KIEV — Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Tuesday told the country’s security council that staying out of the NATO alliance was a “criminal” policy that his government is ready to reverse.

More than 8,000 people have died in Ukraine’s fight against sepa-ratist rebels in the east since April 2014. Russia backed the rebels, fearing that the pro-Western course of the new Kiev government would make it a NATO ally.

“The decision on the non-alliance policy which was announced by the previous government is criminal in terms of security and strategic interests of our state,” Poroshenko said, citing an opinion poll showing 60 percent of Ukrainians supporting potential NATO membership.

Poroshenko, who chaired the security council with NATO Sec-retary-General Jens Stoltenberg in attendance, said any decision to join the alliance will be subject to a popular vote.

Before the February 2014 up-rising which toppled pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych, the majority of Ukrainians opposed joining NATO, but many now see the alliance as their best defense

from a foreign military threat.NATO officials say Ukraine

needs to enact political, economic, social and military reforms to be considered for membership.

Stoltenberg told the meeting on Tuesday that “Ukraine can rely on NATO” and that “NATO provides Ukraine with political and practical support.” He lauded the Kiev govern-ment for sticking to the Minsk cease-fire agreements and called on Moscow and the rebels to respect the deal.

Stoltenberg’s visit comes less than two weeks before a summit in Paris where leaders of Ukraine, Russia, Germany and France will be discussing a political solution to the conflict.

NATO has expressed firm sup-port for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, but alliance member states, including the U.S., have declined its request for offensive weapons.

Poroshenko told reporters after the meeting that he may talk to other world leaders at the U.N. General Assembly next week about sending peacekeepers to eastern Ukraine. However, he said the cease-fire there seems to hold, giving him hope that peacekeepers won’t be needed. (ap)

OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso — Burkina Faso’s coup leader has said that negotiations are still ongoing as a deadline given by the military for the junta to disarm has passed.

Gen. Gilbert Diendere, the coup leader who was head of an ex-pres-ident’s presidential guard until last year, said Tuesday that he awaits

outcomes from talks by a West African regional bloc in Abuja, Nigeria. He says that he wants to find a solution with the army to avoid confrontations.

Local media reported that the junta was being given a 10 a.m. (1000 GMT) deadline to disarm. The National Armed Forces said

it wanted the mutinous soldiers to lay down their arms and return to barracks without bloodshed.

On Monday, the national army said it was sending soldiers from elsewhere around the country to Burkina Faso’s capital in a show of force. A civil society group told residents to remain inside. (ap)

MECCA, Saudi Arabia — More than 2 million Muslims have started the first rites of the annual hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, which draws people from around the world to the holy city of Mecca to perform a series of rituals and prayers aimed at erasing past sins.

Newly-arrived pilgrims circle the cube-shaped Kaaba on Tuesday. They all shed symbols of worldly materialism, a state known as “ih-

ram.” Women forgo makeup and perfume for loose fitted clothing and a head-covering while men wear seamless terry cloth white garments meant to symbolize the equality of human beings before God, regard-less of wealth, race or status.

AMLAPURA - Telaga Waja is the name of a river that streams flow

in Rendang, one of the subdistricts in Karangasem County. This river

flows clearly with a fairly swift cur-rent. Interestingly, this location offers a landscape combining the splendor of rice fields and green hills sheltering it. These are some reasons why the Telaga Waja is preferably chosen to be one of the start points of the quite challenging tracks for

whitewater rafting in Bali.Swift flows of streams with a

few riffles and rocks coming up as obstacles become a great choice for the adventurers to kindle the adren-aline and test your gusts. Another attraction owned by Telaga Waja is the beautiful natural and refreshing

charm supported by the presence of terraced rice fields embellished with traditional activities remained to be preserved by local farmers as well as magnificent view of Mount Agung towering on the north side. It is an ideal place for the route of trekking.

The 28-year-old has performed heroics in helping Britain to its first Davis Cup final for 37 years, win-ning both his singles and a doubles to guide the team past Australia in last weekend’s semi-final in Glas-gow.

The final will be played in Bel-gium from Nov 27-29 -- just a few days after the ATP’s season-finale at London’s O2 Arena for which Murray has already sealed one of the eight spots up for grabs.

Winning the ATP’s showpiece would normally be a priority for Murray, especially as he is yet to do it, but his priorities will now be on helping Britain win the Davis Cup for the first time since 1936.

To complicate matters further, Belgium are likely to choose an

indoor clay surface, hoping to nul-lify the effect of world number three Murray who favours hard courts.

“The O2 would obviously be a question mark for me if we were playing on the clay,” Murray told BBC Radio 5. “I would go and train and prepare on the clay to get ready for the final.

BACK PAINS“If you reach the final (of the O2

event) and play on the Sunday, you also need to take time off -- you can’t just play five matches against the best players in the world and then not take any days off.”

Roger Federer faced a similar predicament last year when he played in London just a few days before trying to win his first Da-

vis Cup title with Switzerland in France.

Federer arrived in Lille exhaust-ed and nursing a back injury that meant he had to withdraw from the ATP Tour finals title decider against Novak Djokovic.

He ended up losing easily to Gael Monfils in the second singles, be-fore recovering to win the doubles with Stanislas Wawrinka and his second singles against Richard Gasquet.

Murray complained of back pains during the tie against Austra-lia and the transition from a hard surface to clay has always proved problematic for the Scot. “I need more time on the clay to let my back get used to it,” he said.

Belgium are yet to name the venue and surface for the final but a clay court inside the Flanders Expo Arena in Ghent is the likely choice. (rtr)

CHICAGO — Tamika Catchings scored 27 points and Shenise Johnson added 22 to help the Indiana Fever beat the Chicago Sky 100-89 to advance to the Eastern Conference finals in the WNBA playoffs on Monday.

It’s the fifth straight year that Indiana has advanced this far, matching the league record set by Los Angeles from 1999-03. This might be the most unexpected one of the streak, especially after dropping Game 1 to Chicago.

Erlana Larkins added 18 points and Marissa Coleman had 17 for the third-seeded Fever, who advanced to face top-seeded New York or fourth-seeded Washington. Those teams are tied 1-all going into the series finale Tuesday in New York.

Catchings also became the first player in WNBA history to score 1,000 points in the playoffs. She now has 1,019.

Elena Delle Donne led second-seeded Chicago with 40 points, two short of the league’s playoff record set by Angel McCoughtry in 2010, according to STATS. The league’s Most Valuable Player was 15-of-22 from the field. (ap)

Three weeks after the transfer debacle, there is no reason to think the Spanish giants would

be better off with De Gea as its starter. For the first time

in its 11 3 - y e a r h i s tory, Madrid h a s n ’ t c o n -c e d e d a g o a l

i n i t s first five

matches of t h e s e a s o n ,

and Navas is a big reason for the success of

the team’s de-fense so far.

Fans are more than happy wi th t h e g o a l k e e p e r, loudly chanting his name after every

great save made by

the Costa Rican at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. Navas, who never hid his desire to stay in Madrid, is thrilled with how it all turned out.

“Things are going well,” Navas said. “I’m extremely happy that people rate my work highly and it’s a great source of pride to be at this club. As a boy I dreamed about being here and it fills you with satisfaction to be part of Real Madrid history. The hard work has been worth it and this is the path that will take us to greater things.”

The 28-year-old Navas has had some outstanding performances since the transfer with Manchester United fell through, making several big saves to help keep alive Madrid’s streak of clean sheets. In the team’s home opener against Real Betis, he came through by stopping a penalty in the second half, de-lighting the home crowd.

“We all want to keep clean sheets and we’ve managed to do so over the last few games,” Navas said. “So we’re satisfied as a result.”

Madrid pursued De Gea throughout the summer, and club officials publicly expressed their desire to bring the United goalkeeper back to his hometown. Negotiations dragged

on for weeks, and Navas was included in the deal as a way to help push it through — but the whole thing fell apart when Madrid failed to get all the paperwork in to FIFA on time.

“It was a difficult situation, but it’s over now and I’m living in the present,” said Na-vas, who was signed by Madrid after the 2014 World Cup and has become the No. 1 after the departure of longtime captain Iker Casillas. “I’m here, with Real Madrid, the manager has faith in me, I’m enjoying my football and I have to try and reach my full potential.”

Madrid and United were the object of mockery by football fans worldwide after the deadline day debacle, but both sides might be happy with the end result. De Gea signed a four-year contract extension with United and since then has been playing well with the English club. He was key in the team’s 3-2 win over Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday, making two great saves to help his team reach second place in the standings, two points behind Manchester City.

Navas also did well in Madrid’s 1-0 win over Granada on Saturday, helping his team sit second in the Spanish league after four rounds, two points behind Barcelona.

Madrid and United still blame each other for the failed trade, and it remains unclear who was actually at fault. But after seeing how things turned out, they both might con-sider the non-deal a success. (rtr)

MILAN - Back in Italy after a four-year absence, Felipe Melo has quickly made his mark on Serie A and told those who do not like his combative style to “go and play tennis.”

The combustible Brazilian, who believes that getting booked is an occupational hazard rather than anything to do with poor sportsmanship, has played two matches for Inter Milan since his move from Galatasaray, more than enough to make his presence felt.

His next outing is likely to be on Wednesday at home to Verona where Inter, the only team with a 100 percent record in Serie A, will try and make it five wins out of five.

As usual, Melo has made no apologies for his bruising tackles and was typically unre-pentant after a clash with Paul M’poku during Sunday’s 1-0 win over Chievo which left his opponent with a fractured right

cheekbone.Chievo coach Rolando Maran

was so angry with the challenge on the Democratic Republic of Congo player that he was sent off for his protests. “I’ve never made a tackle that has broken a player’s leg,” Melo told reporters. “But football is a contact sport. If you don’t want contact, then go and play tennis.”

The 32-year-old was similarly frank after he was booked for fouling old rival Mario Balotelli during Inter’s 1-0 win over AC Milan the week before.

“I was booked, but I don’t think I deserved to be. The derby is always a physical game and if I had to get a second yellow card for the good of the team, I’d do that without hesitation,” he said. “Balotelli is a great player but you have to wind him up a bit.”

Melo, sent off more than a dozen times in his career, previ-ously spent three seasons in Serie A, one with Fiorentina and two with Juventus.

He has played the last four seasons with Galatasaray, where he helped the Turkish club win three league titles and became a cult hero.

“People talk but should watch the matches more carefully, have a look at what I’ve done in the last four years,” said Melo.

“I made history at Galatasaray and I will do it here as well. I can give so much to this team, which is young. I’m really hungry.”

Melo has never been forgiven in Brazil for being sent off dur-ing the World Cup quarter-final defeat against the Netherlands in 2010 and has not been picked for the national team since. But not even that has persuaded him to soften his approach.

“Yes, I’m a nasty player and that is my strength,” he said when he arrived at Inter. “There are always going to be bookings; I won’t think twice about stopping an opponent if they are going towards our goal.” (rtr)

LONDON — Alex Ferguson lined up Pep Guardiola as his po-

tential successor at Manchester United but the Spanish coach didn’t call him before taking the Bayern Munich job. In his new book “Leading,” Fergu-son said the club “established that several very desirable

candidates were unavailable” before David Moyes was hired in 2013 for an unsuccessful 11-

month spell in charge. After Guardiola left Barce-

lona in mid-2012, Ferguson had dinner with the former Barcelona coach in New York but, as his own retirement was not on the agenda

yet, there was no “direct pro-posal” for the Spaniard to

one day take over at United. “I asked Pep to phone me before

he accepted an offer from another club but he didn’t and wound

up joining Bayern Munich in July 2013,” Ferguson writes in the book, which was published on Tuesday and co-authored with Michael Moritz.

Although Ferguson publicly an-nounced the end of his near 27-year reign as United manager in May 2013, he had decided in December 2012 to retire after his wife’s sister died. Guardiola announced in Janu-ary 2013 that he would take over at Bayern for the next season.

The succession process behind the scenes at Old Trafford began in March 2013 when Ferguson in-formed the owning Glazer family he wanted to retire in May.

“It became apparent that Jose Mourinho had given his word to Roman Abramovich that he would return to Chelsea, and that Carlo Ancelotti would succeed him at Real Madrid,” Ferguson wrote. “We also knew Juergen Klopp was happy at Borussia Dortmund, and would be

signing a new contract. Meantime, Louis van Gaal had undertaken to lead the Dutch attempt to win the 2014 World Cup.”

Van Gaal did eventually take charge at Old Trafford after the World Cup, replacing Moyes after the Scot failed to qualify United for the Champions League with a squad that had won the Premier League by 11 points in Ferguson’s final season.

“There were some who wanted me to return to the sidelines,” Fergu-son reflects on the firing of Moyes, who was recommended for the job by his fellow Scot. “But I was not tempted for a moment.”

Ferguson is frustrated that there re-mains criticism of the squad he left be-hind, with United having spent around $500 million on new players since. “You would have thought that I had left 11 corpses on the steps of a funeral,” he wrote. “It’s hilarious.” (ap)

ZAGREB, Croatia — Croatia has hired former defender Josip Simunic, who was banned for 10 games for lead-ing fans in a pro-Nazi chant, to assist new national team coach Ante Cacic.

Simunic missed the 2014 World Cup over the incident in the qualify-ing playoff against Iceland in 2013. It highlighted Croatian football’s ongo-ing struggle with discrimination.

Croatia has been deducted one point in its European Championship

qualifying group after a swastika was painted on the field before June’s match against Italy. Croatia must play its next two home qualifiers in an empty stadium.

Simunic is on the coaching staff of Cacic, who has been given a contract through the 2018 World Cup. He won the domestic double with Dinamo Zagreb in 2012. Croatian federation president Davor Suker says “we rely on Croatian brains.” (rtr)

ZURICH — FIFA will update its executive committee members this week on the American and Swiss corruption investigations which involve some of them. The two-day session starting Thurs-day will be chaired by President Sepp Blatter, who is an expected target of both federal cases.

Blatter’s reluctance to visit countries which have an extradi-tion treaty with the United States appears to have affected FIFA’s business schedule.

FIFA says the executive com-mittee will decide Friday on the date and place of its next meeting.

That had previously been

scheduled to take place on Dec. 17-18 in Japan, which hosts the Club World Cup and where Blat-ter could risk arrest.

FIFA says this week’s meeting will approve an agenda for the extraordinary congress in Zurich on Feb. 26 when Blatter’s succes-sor will be elected. (ap)

MADRID — Real Madrid might consider itself lucky the plan to trade goal-keeper Keylor Navas and cash for David de Gea never materialized. Aside

from the embarrassment of not being able to finalize a transfer that was considered done, Madrid is doing just fine with Navas in goal.

CHELsEA midfielder Eden Haz-ard is convinced he has not lost his magic touch that was on full display last season and is taking confidence from his goal against Arsenal as he seeks to rediscover the same form this campaign.

The Belgium international’s 14 goals helped Chelsea become the Eng-lish champions for the fifth time last season, besides earning him England’s Footballer of the Year and the Players’ Player of the Year awards.

The goals have, however, dried up this season for the 24-year-old who failed to find the back of the net in first five league games and scored a deflected goal in stoppage time in Saturday’s 2-0 win against Arsenal.

“I am feeling good. Last year I had a good season. I have not lost my quality,” Hazard told the club website (www.chelseafc.com). “I had a good game and scored a goal with a bit of luck, but that will be good for my confi-dence,” he said.

Hazard was equally happy that Chelsea had arrested their league slump with their second win in six games.

“After the complicated start to the season we’ve had

we had to win against a good team,” he said.

“We won during the week as well and the confidence was close (to being fully restored). We deserved to win the match.”

The bad-tempered Premier League derby at Stamford Bridge saw Chel-

sea striker Diego Costa being charged with “act of violent conduct” after television re-plays showed him catching Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny with his arm.

Midfielder Cesc Fabre-gas said Costa remained popular with the fans as well as his team mates.

“He’s very competi-tive; it’s good, he’s hun-gry for success and to win all the time,” the former Arsenal captain said.

“You can see the fans love him as well, they get behind him all the time so it’s great for us,” he added. (rtr)

(ap)

All able-bodied Muslims are required in Islam to perform the hajj once in a lifetime. Pilgrims begin the hajj in Mecca, before heading to the nearby tent city of Mina. (ap)

(afp)

MANGUPURA - As being unable to accept the attitude of the PAP I Ngurah Rai Airport prioritizing businessmen having large capital rather than the local ones to work on the adver-tising project around the airport, the advertising companies coalesced into the Indonesian Advertising Companies Asso-ciation (P3I) Bali, came to the Badung Civic Center, Monday (Sep. 21).

(ap)

Page 16: Edisi 23 September 2015 | International Bali Post

KELIKI Kawan hamlet, Kelusa, Payangan, may be appropriate to be given a special note in the history of the painting development in Bali. Unlike the usual Balinese painters that expressed their artistic creativity over the canvas, drawing paper and other media averagely of wider size,

the painters of Keliki Kawan consider it enough to utilize a sheet of paper measuring not more than 15

cm x 10 cm. Sometimes it is even much smaller than it. Though the media to be ‘conquered’ is very limited, they are very detailed in painting. Completeness of the object ‘recorded’ is not inferior to paintings that utilize a wide-sized and infinite media.

According to the Dean of the Faculty of Fine Art and Design (FSRD) at the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar, Ni Made Rinu, the central idea in ??the creation of postcard painting of Keliki Kawan is a true continuation of the Ubud and Batuan painting style that was first known by foreign art connoisseurs. Arguably, the postcard painting is a harmonious combination of the Ubud and Batuan distinctive painting style put on a tiny format.

“In terms of the idea, postcard painting is indeed a repetition of painting styles that has been developed previously.

Soap star tweet-blasts Viola Davis’ Emmy win, and apologizes

“As leaders of two of the larg-est democracies in the world, the president and President Widodo will discuss plans to expand exist-ing areas of bilateral cooperation,” the White House said.

The visit comes as Obama -- who spent part of his childhood in Indonesia -- presses for Jakarta to play a bigger role in its region, where there is nervousness about

Chinese territorial claims in the South China Sea.

The world’s most populous Mus-lim nation has long punched below its weight, struggling with domestic economic and democratic develop-ment, but Washington hopes that it will begin to set a more positive example.

“Indonesia, as everyone knows, is the world’s third largest democ-

racy,” US Secretary of State John Kerry said, welcoming his Indone-sian counterpart Retno Marsudi to the State Department.

“And there are many critical issues that we share enormous con-cerns about. We’re working very closely on any number of economic relationships,” he said, praising Jakarta’s role in the regional body ASEAN.

“Indonesia plays a critical role, with respect to the South China Sea, our concerns about climate change and other issues.”

Kerry said Widodo and Obama have a very similar attitude to “getting things done” and break-ing bureaucratic barriers, and that

he looked forward to a productive meeting next month.

“This is the best time for Indo-nesia and the US to sit together and discuss about the future rela-tions between the two countries,” Marsudi told reporters before her meeting with Kerry.

“Indonesia plays a very significant role in ASEAN and as the biggest Muslim-population country we can contribute a lot to create a positive situation towards peace and stability in the region and the world.” Marsudi also insisted on the importance of the extensive trade ties between Indone-sia and United States.

Ties were rattled last year when documents leaked by fugitive US

contractor Edward Snowden re-vealed that Australia, part of the US-led “Five Eyes” intelligence-sharing network, had targeted Jakarta.

According to a report, which angered Indonesia, Australian spies had tried to tap the then-Indonesian leader Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s phones during a trade dispute with Washington. (afp)
