DENPASAR - Governor of Bali Made Mangku Pastika acknowledged the eco- nomic slowdown of Bali. However, he underlined that the slowdown is only occuring in the export sector, mainly in the export of handicraft and furniture products. “What is actually slowing down are our exports, mostly because the number of people purchasing our commodities has decreased. The economies of Europe and America are both in decline, and so is that of Japan. As a result, exports of our handicrafts are also in decline,” said Pastika while paying a visit to the prepa- rations for Pesona Budaya at ISI Denpasar, on Tuesday (May 19). On the same subject but on a separate occa- sion, Deputy Governor of Bali, I Ketut Sudik- erta, said that they are always trying to improve and boost exports, either by more intensively promoting Balinese products, or by improv- ing the quality of the products. “Most of the products made in Bali are handicrafts. If we look at exports on a national level, we in Bali remain in a relatively very good position be- cause our products have characteristics that in demand internationally,” he said after chairing the ceremony for the National Awakening Day celebrations, on Wednesday (May 20). Sudikerta added that the provincial govern- ment of Bali also facilitates the process for those wanting to export products. Likewise, coaching, training and economic empower- ment in the form of capital for SMEs is also provided by the provincial government as a way to help drive exports. “These efforts are meant to contribute to increasing the produc- tion of export commodities to optimal levels,” he explained. In addition to paying attention to the trade sector -particularly SMEs, Sudikerta also claims that they continuously motivate people to farm, given that the agricultural sector contributes significantly to tourism which is on par with exports as the backbone of Bali’s economy. SYDNEY - A publicist for the latest “Pi-rates of the Caribbean” movie denied reports Thursday that Johnny Depp stormed off the Australian set to be with his wife in the United States. The superstar actor has been shoot-ing scenes as swashbuckling Captain Jack Sparrow on the Gold Coast tourist strip in Queensland state, but the Gold Coast Bulletin said he walked out on Wednesday, reportedly with his marriage in trouble.

“He’s going back to the States on the first available private charter flight he can get on,” it cited a source on the production team of “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” as saying.

The newspaper claimed Depp and his wife of three months Amber Heard were constantly bickering, but a publicist for the movie, Mi-chael Singer, said the claims were untrue.

“I can’t go into detail on our filming schedules or the movements of individuals but I can tell you that nothing in that report has any relation to reality,” Singer told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“Mr Depp has been filming on schedule. It’s business as usual, with all participants working.”

Heard is believed to have returned to the United States last week with the couple’s two dogs Boo and Pistol, which were forced out of the country after officials warned they would be destroyed because they entered without authorisation.

The couple brought the terriers into Australia on their private jet without going through quarantine procedures, with Agricul-ture Minister Barnaby Joyce telling them to “bugger off” back to Hollywood, sparking a social media frenzy.

The Bulletin said Depp had initially been scheduled to return with them but changed his plans at the 11th hour after the film’s produc-ers intervened.

If he left, it would be another blow for the Disney movie, which is already behind schedule after Depp suffered a hand injury and returned to the United States to recover in March. (afp)

The last-ever “Late Show with David Letterman” brings to an end an American cultural institution that has been watched by millions and an extraordinary career that has inspired a generation of comedians.

Wednesday’s finale opened with a bang. Former US presidents George H. and George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, as well as current president Barack Obama were filmed repeat-ing one after the other, “our long national nightmare is over.”

“Letterman is retiring,” said Obama, stand-ing shoulder to shoulder with the 68-year-old comedian in a pre-filmed segment. “You’re just kidding right?” deadpanned Letterman to a no-nonsense shrug from Obama.

It was a night of rapturous applause and standing ovations from a VIP-studded crowd. The show featured gags at Letterman’s expense, jokes poking fun at celebrity and play-back highlights of years gone by.

Hollywood stars Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin, Bill Murray and Jim Carrey, and co-medians Jerry Seinfeld and Tina Fey led 10 stars who performed the bit “Top 10 things

I’ve always wanted to say to Dave.”Their pithy one-liners paid tribute to the

caustic and at times grumpy humor of the veteran broadcaster, the longest-serving nighttime US talk show host, who has been on air since getting his first show on NBC in 1982.

“Thank you and goodnight,” Letterman said at the end of what was the 6,028th television show of his career, calling a multitude of tributes “flattering, embarrassing and gratifying.”

“Thank you for everything, you’ve given me everything,” he told his fans.

He also gave thanks to wife Regina and their 11-year-old son Harry, who sat beam-ing in the audience as he said how much he loved them.

Rock giants Foo Fighters played out the show to roars from the jubilant crowd at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York.

Critics have praised Letterman for com-bining innovative and odd-ball antics with traditional interviews, and for inspiring some of most the talented comics working today in Britain and the United States. (afp)

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The fundraising evening kicked off after the Junior Sports Academy concluded their AFL Auskick training at 5pm and as the BBQ fired up, raffle ticket sales were running hot! Many who came along to support the event made the most of the cooler evening air, securing a table outside to watch the Bali Geckos in training action.

Inside the Sports’ Bar, guests were keen to take advantage of the evening’s special wine prices as well as the chance to ‘taste before buying’ and bar staff were kept on the hop! Outside, crowd numbers were building and guests enjoyed some smooth tunes from popular entertainer Athron, who very gener-ously donated his time and talents on the evening to help support this worthy cause.

7pm came around quickly and it was time to draw the raffle prizes. Local businesses rallied in support of the event by donating fantastic prizes such as accommodation and food and beverage packages. Prizes included a 750K lunch voucher thanks to sen-

sational Petitenget restaurant, Bar-bacoa, two nights’ accommodation at the gorgeous Kommune Resort, Keramas, with first prize being two nights’ accommodation at one of Se-mara Resort Uluwatu’s luxurious five bedroom villas! Some other lucky at-tendees were also recipients of extra prize donations such as a Cocoon Medical Spa voucher to the value of one million rupiah, two tickets to the recent Canggu Club Mothers’ Day luncheon and a one million rupiah voucher for food and beverage at Finn’s Beach Club.

Raffle draws done and dusted, guests were treated to an address by the two inspirational young instiga-tors of the Bye Bye Plastic Bags Appeal, Green School students and sisters, Isabel and Melati Wijsen. These eloquent and entrepreneurial young ladies had the crowd engaged and enthusiastic to hear more about the incredible environmental and humanitarian achievements by the largest ‘children driven action group’ the island has ever seen.

On the whole, The Canggu Club Nepal Fundraiser was a resounding success with a total of Rp 45 million raised on the evening. Guests were clearly keen to do what they could to contribute with raffle ticket sales amassing a not-too-shabby Rp 27.6 million! Rp 1.4 million was received in donations on the night in addition to another Rp 16 million donated by The Canggu Club which went directly to Bye Bye Plastic Bags Nepal Appeal to assist in the purchase of rice to feed the earthquake victims. The remain-ing amount raised will be distributed to Red Cross and UNICEF to go to-ward their aid efforts in Nepal.

Special mention must also go to incredible seven year old Ben Breeze who also donated a portion of the monies he has raised through his charity Ben’s Boxes and their go-fundme page, to the Bye Bye Plastic Bag campaign. In a climate where sadly, much of the news we hear is negative, it is uplifting to know that generosity, community and compas-sion is still alive and well!

CANGGU - The recent tragic events in Nepal seemed to strike a chord with many and it has been heartening to see the overwhelming response from those willing to help via donations, fundraising and volunteer efforts. The evening of Thursday May 7th saw a shining example of this social responsibility in action with The Canggu Club hosting The Nepal Earthquake Appeal, with monies raised at the event gazetted for distribution between UNICEF, The red Cross and the motivated team from Bye Bye Plastic Bags in their efforts to help the victims of the recent earthquakes.

DENPASAr - Unqualified prod-ucts remain to be distributed in the market. On Wednesday (May 20), the Denpasar Agency for Food and Drug Control (BBPOM) eliminated the unqualified products. The products were eliminated because they have no distribution license, sold in illegal places, containing hazardous materials and others.

As estimated, the total seized products are worth IDR 564 million, consisting of 355 items of hard drugs found in illegal place at the amount of 8,377 pieces. Besides, there are also ten items of food without distribution license totally amounting to 93 pieces, 342 items of cosmetics without dis-tribution license and with hazardous substance consisting of 3,570 pieces as well as 405 items of traditional medicine without distribution license with chemicals and drugs (BKO) at total amount of 4,488 pieces. There are also 15 items of medical supplies sold at illegal place at total amount of 26 pieces, two items of dietary supplements containing chemical and drugs at total amount of 327 pieces as well as 4,100 items of old samples in 2014 namely the samples of medicine, traditional medicine, cosmetics and food supplement.

Chief of the BBPOM Denpasar, Endang Widowati, explained that the

unqualified products are the results of operation made in 2014. “The unqualified products are the result of post-market surveillance. Some are eliminated on the spot, while others are secured to await legal process in court,” she explained.

Supervision is also carried out by using retain samples. In other words, the products are intentionally pur-chased by the BBPOM to be further re-tested in laboratory to determine whether the product still qualifies or not considering that the BBPOM does not only perform pre market surveillance (prior to the entry into the market), but also post-market surveil-lance (after circulating). “On the way, we do not know how the product looks like or what to do with the products,” he said.

Data of the product elimination in 2014 denoting the results of opera-tion in 2013 indicate that they have economic value as much as IDR 619 million. On the other hand, the elimination of products in 2015 is obtained from the operation in 2014, with the economic value of IDR 564 million. “Then, there is a decrease in the economic value of the products eliminated this year compared to that of previous year,” she said.

Even though there is a decrease in the economic value, it does not

“Result of the national exam analysis through the integrity index is a very ‘painful’ for Bali as being ranked the lowest eleven. This fact is bitter, but must be accepted and make a drug for the education in Bali,” said the Head of Education Quality Assurance Agency (LPMP) of Bali, Dr. I Made Alit Mariana, Wednesday.

The national exam integrity in-dex is measured by the percentage of the answers of students that did not indicate the pattern of cheating. The cheating measured is the com-bination of percentage of mutual

cheating among the students and the percentage of uniformity pattern of the answers to the national exam at a school.

As the released of the Ministry of Education and Culture on the National Exam Integrity Index 2015, the score of Bali is far lower than some other regions. In details, the integrity score of Denpasar is only 65.44 posing the highest in Bali, followed by Bangli (63.14), Gianyar (62.44), Buleleng (61.09), Jembrana (60.13), Badung (59.29), Karangasem (53.82), Tabanan (51.63) and the lowest is Klung-

kung (49.76). Thus, the average of National Exam Integrity Index in Bali is 58.53 or remaining far below the national average of 63.28.

Then, the provinces having the highest average of National Exam Integrity Index include the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), followed by Jakarta, West Java, Central Java and others. The regions with the highest integrity index score are the city of Yogya-karta (82.37), city of Bandar Lam-pung (81.32), town of Magelang (81.26), Belu County (80.61) and Purworejo County (80.33). In Bali, integrity index score of high school and vocational school low

DENPASAr - The Ministry of Education and Culture has released the score of the National Exam Integrity Index (IIUN) of high school and vocational school (SMA/SMK) 2015. The re-sults are quite surprising. Bali occupies the eleven regions with the lowest score among the 34 provinces in Indonesia. Low score of the index indicates that many frauds are still found in the implementation of the national exam.

meantime, the lowest scores are attained by Nduga County (18.40), South Buru County (19.60), Yali-mo County (19.97), Simalungun County (21.79) and Jeneponto County (25.14). As for the region attaining the highest score in the national exam is Denpasar with an average score of high school (SMA/MA) at 83.26 and voca-tional school at 81.02.

Alit Mariana added that the low score attained by Bali in the National Exam Integrity Index must be made a lesson and evalu-ation by all parties, especially the provincial and county/municipal education agency, schools, parents, students and societal elements of the education observers. “Release of the Ministry of Education and Culture should be addressed with

simultaneous work by all compo-nents of society, province, county/municipality, teachers, parents and students to build integrity and honesty. In the future, honesty and integrity will also become the main instrument and the creditor in the job market,” he said.

In the near future, the LPMP Bali will also build a dialogue with the county/municipal education agency and the activists to address the results of the analysis of the national exam product functioned as the mapping and the low score of integrity index. Furthermore, he expected there will be a formula of follow-up plan in each county / municipality in Bali to reduce the fraud index taking place in the implementation of the national exam later on. NEW YORK — Fashion students, take heart: Even someone with the natural talent of Marc Jacobs had to pull all-nighters to get through design school.

Just before receiving an award Tuesday night from his alma mater, the Parsons School of Design, Jacobs recalled the cloud of giddy exhaustion under which he worked at school, where he’d toil around the clock with fellow student (and now, noted fellow designer) Tracy Reese.

“Tracy and I worked all the time on our homework,” he said in an interview. “I mean, we’d work so hard and be so tired — we wouldn’t have any sleep. We’d get so tired that we’d be giddy, we’d just get the giggles.”

Jacobs, who for years has been one of fashion’s biggest names, said he never could have imagined the position he would one day occupy. “I always dreamed of being a working fashion designer, but I never knew what proportion it would take,” he said. “And I am still amazed by it. Every new thing we get to do and every change that we make, I just think how fortunate I am. But I wouldn’t say it’s lucky, because I had the opportunity and I prepared for that opportunity. And I pushed myself. And others pushed me.”

Jacobs received his award from the acknowledged arbiter of the fashion world, Anna Wintour. The Vogue editor noted in her introduction that in a world that can be filled “with superficiality,” Jacobs’ “feet are always firmly planted on the ground.” He is one designer who

doesn’t take himself too seriously, she said.Accepting his award, Jacobs lived up to that descrip-

tion by explaining that had he not succeeded as a fashion designer, he would have become a video store clerk.

That, he said, was his only Plan B, and that’s what he told his high school guidance counselor.

“I wouldn’t have had a very long career as a video store clerk, since video stores don’t exist anymore,” Jacobs quipped.

Tuesday’s Parsons benefit, which raised $1.7 million according to school officials, also honored the French luxury conglomerate LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, and included a fashion show featuring designs from Parson’s 2015 graduates — an opportunity that, Jacobs noted, had helped launch his own career many years earlier.

Now 52, Jacobs designed and sold a line of sweaters while still a Parsons student. He was creative director of Louis Vuitton for 16 years, from 1997 to 2013, and currently heads his own Marc Jacobs label as well as the lower-priced Marc by Marc Jacobs line.

In the interview, Jacobs said he can’t put his finger on what makes some talented designers succeed while some others do not.

“I don’t know,” he said. “I try to concentrate and ... do the best job I can. And I’m not always perfect — in fact, I’m never perfect. But I do the best I can and I give It my all. I don’t give up. Even when I’d like to.” (ap)

Charlize Theron wowed crowds at the French Rivi-era’s “Mad Max: Fury Road” premiere in a black Valentino dress with a horizontal tulle section across her shoulders.

Emma Stone repeated this coup in a black Oscar de la Renta lace dress with a sheer band across the upper torso at the “Irrational Man” photo call.

Rachel Weisz chanelled a similar style but in white for “The Lobster” premiere — in a Louis Vuitton gown with a sequined section that drew eyes up to her shoulders.

Elsewhere, the trend was for shoulders to be sexily ex-posed with truncated gowns — with the top parts lopped off — like Natalie Portman’s delicate Dior strapless gown in black and pale blue.

One of the best shoulder looks was comeback kid Si-enna Miller who shone in a speckled gray Balenciaga off-the-shoulder dress from Fall 2015 with a band that accentuated her enviable up-per torso.

The concept of building an air-port on an artificial island was ex-posed by the investor’s consultant, I Made Mangku, accompanied by the Government of Canada Trade Com-missioner Service, Tommy Ruslim in the presence of the Deputy Re-gent of Buleleng Nyoman Sutjidra, Regional Secretary of Buleleng Dewa Ketut Puspaka, legislators of the Buleleng House and agency heads from the ranks of the govern-ment of Buleleng.

Various measures have been presented by the investor, but there is lack of optimism about the proj-ect going through, because previ-ously two other investors had made similar proposals but subsequently called off their projects.

The people of Buleleng have a strong desire to see the airport ma-terialize as soon as possible, but it would appear that the investors that have emerged so far, have not fol-lowed up on their proposals. This

most recent proposal however is different and there are expectation that the proposed project will move beyond simple discussions. The concept of reclaiming part of the sea by creating an artificial island is not an easy thing to realize and has socio-cultural and environ-mental implications and impacts. “This is just a presentation of the initial plan to build an off shore airport near Kubutambahan. By all means, this project needs further study including the required by law pre-feasibility study. We hope this latest prospective investor will be more serious than the previous ones. They need to be earnest in wanting to invest in the airport construc-tion in Buleleng that will allow for there to be a balance between North Bali and South Bali,” said Deputy Regent Sutjidra, on Wednesday (May 20).

TABANAN - Since being in-cluded as a World Heritage, there has been a prohibition on building in the area of Jatiluwih without special permission. However, this prohibition has been infringed upon. In fact a number of businesses including a villas, a restaurant and a rice

mills have been operating with-out required permits.

As a result, local people have been complaining so finally the headman of Jatiluwih reported these violations to the Tabanan Municipal Police. The report was then fol-lowed up by a surprise inspection on Wednesday (May 20th).

Chief of the Tabanan Municipal Police, Wayan Sarba, said that the results of the inspections conducted in the area of Penebel, found a number of businesses that were operating without permission. One of violators is the owner of a villa located between Petali Temple and

Bujangga Temple. “During the inspection our personnel were not able to meet with the owner of the villa which is presently being reno-vated,” said Sarba.

Other than targeting this villa, the police also moved in on a res-taurant at Jatiluwih, where it was discovered that the permit which the restaurant holds, had expired. “We’ve asked the business owner to come to the office and imme-diately submit a request for the renewal of

their permits,” he said. The police also inspected a rice

mill that could not present its per-mits. “We must therefor temporar-ily, suspend the operations of this business. If the permits have been processed and issued, we will al-low them to continue to operate,” he said.

Related to such findings, Wayan Sarba expressed his deep disap-pointment about the attitude of

Bearing the name Dwijendra North Bali International Airport, the airport would be built on an area of 1,463 hectares of an artificial island and would have a two-lane runaway spread on an over an area of 966 hectares, as well as a terminal building which will cover an area of 280,000 square meters.

responded to the airport construc-tion plan as the hope for the only way to change the economic pros-pects of the people of Buleleng. “Formerly, there was a prospective investor: PT PBM, who presented their plan, but they were scared off by government regulations. Now

there is another prospective inves-tor. Hopefully, the planned airport can come through with this one. Institutionally we encourage all incoming investors who are serious, so that the project can be made real and not simply remain in the discus-sion phase,” he said.

For now, I Made Mangku said that the short term plan is to create an area of 600 hectares, followed by phase II in which another 300 hectares would be added and then finally the full 1, 400 hectares would be finalized accommodating two runways. (kmb34)

Foreign minis ters Anifah Aman of Malaysia and Retno Marsudi of Indonesia were to visit Naypyidaw a day after an-nouncing their countries would end a much-condemned policy of turning away boatloads of starv-ing migrants.

The policy about-turn was

welcomed by the United States, whose Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken was also to meet with Myanmar officials in the capital Naypyidaw, as his country said it stood ready to admit some of the migrants.

Blinken said he would raise the Myanmar government’s treat-

ment of its Rohingya minority in the western state of Rakhine, which is widely blamed for fuel-ling the crisis.

“We will be talking directly to the government of Myanmar about its own responsibilities to improve conditions in Rakhine state so that people don’t feel that

their only choice is to put their lives at risk by leaving and taking to the sea,” Blinken said during a stop Wednesday in Jakarta.

But tensions with the former junta-run nation remained, and heading into Thursday’s talks, Myanmar’s government reiterated its refusal to recognise the stateless Rohingya as an ethnic group.

It insists they are illegal im-migrants from neighbouring Bangladesh.

“If they are going to discuss about Rohingya, as we have said before, we do not accept that term here,” said Zaw Htay, director of the presidential office.

But he confirmed that Myan-mar would at tend a broader regional summit planned on the crisis in Bangkok on May 29, after the government this week softened its line by offering to provide humanitarian assistance. (afp)

HONG KONG - Flight attendants from Hong Kong’s flagship airline Cathay Pa-cific threatened a summer strike Thursday if management does not scrap a new policy to reduce salaries and perks for cabin crew.

The warning came after a two-day sit-in held by flight attendants inside Terminal 1 of the city’s international Chek Lap Kok airport, which failed to win any concessions.

“If... (chief executive) Mr Chu decides not respond, we have no other choice but to start promoting the strike (among members)” said Dora Lai, head of Cathay Pacific Airways Flight Attendants Union, at the airline’s headquarters.

Around 200 cabin crew who had been staging the airport sit-in also gathered at the headquarters to continue their protest.

They chanted “Respect the union” and held up placards reading “No more Cut! Cut! Cut!” and “Cathay Pacific cabin crew strike”.

Lai said the union would mobilise its 6,400 members to strike for two weeks starting on August 18 if the company did not listen to their demands.

The protests kicked off Tuesday in re-

sponse to cuts made by the airline.Under the new rules, cabin crew who

joined the airline after April 16 will only see their wages rise to HK$159.40 ($20.56) after their first three years with the company, down from HK$176.80 for those who signed contracts before April 2.

The union is also protesting over cuts to lunch allowances for attendants flying through Melbourne, Australia, and a legal protection clause which it says the airline has deleted from its operational manual.

The clause says Cathay will cover legal costs resulting from any incident which oc-curs while cabin crew are on duty, according to the union.

Lai said that they were still hoping to talk with CEO Ivan Chu and avert the strike.

“We just want to have our company give us what we had before,” she said.

The airline said it was prepared to meet with the union but that it would take time to arrange.

“We just received the invitation, we prob-ably have to check the schedule,” said Maggie Yeung, the airline’s general manager of cabin crew. (afp)

SEOUL - South Korean President Park Geun-Hye on Thursday selected her justice minister to become the new prime minister -- a post that has become something of a poi-soned chalice under her administration.

Hwang Kyo-Ahn, 58, was named as the new prime minister after his predecessor, Lee Wan-Koo, was implicated in a major bribery scandal and forced to quit in April after serv-ing only two months.

As a former prosecutor and with two years under his belt as justice minister, Hwang was deemed fit to follow through on Park’s pledge of an anti-corruption drive, presidential press secretary Kim Sung-Woo told reporters.

“We believe he is the right person to root out corruption prevalent in our society and carry out political reform to build a new Korea,” Kim said.

Transparency International in 2014 ranked South Korea as the world’s 43rd least corrupt country out of 175, behind Taiwan but ahead of China.

The prime minister is a largely symbolic

post in South Korea, where power is concen-trated in the presidency.

Under Park, it has proved to be a job that is both difficult to secure and equally tough to hold on to.

The president’s first ever nominee with-drew after allegations about his past, and her initial prime minister was Chung Hong-Won, who then resigned after the April 2014 Sewol ferry disaster.

Two successive Park nominees to replace Chung withdrew their candidacies -- again because of allegations of past wrongdoing -- and the job finally went to Lee, who then stepped down last month.

It is the only cabinet post requiring parlia-mentary approval, and nominees often face a rough confirmation ride from opposition MPs.

The main opposition New Politics Al-liance for Democracy described Hwang’s nomination as “very disappointing”, saying the justice ministry’s political independence had been weakened on his watch. (afp)

DENPASAR - Cooperation between the Corruption Eradica-tion Commission (KPK) with the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) to investigate corruption in natural resources in the area (BP: May 20) is welcomed by a number of components in Bali. They are I Putu Anom, Chairman of the Indonesian Tourism Intellectuals Association (ICPI) of Bali and Nyoman Pasek, Chairman of the Observer Alliance of Karangasem Welfare (Apisemar).

Anom asserted on Wednesday that all types of violations and crim-inality, especially the violations forfeiting the environment, must be prosecuted. “The issues of corrup-tion should and must be examined by the KPK, either the corruption with violations or destruction of

all kinds of natural resources such as coastal border, lakes, mountains, rivers, and ravines, destruction of coral reef, marine life, mangroves and sea. It also includes the current reclamation plan,” he said.

According to him, the people of Bali or even the world shall build and save Bali based on Hindu scripture known as the Sad Kertih, the six preservations or sanctities (Samudera Kertih—ocean, Danu Kertih—lake, Wana Kertih—forest, Giri Kertih—mountain, Tukad Kertih—river, Atma Kertih—soul). “All the components of society must support the KPK in carrying out its duties and may not be inter-fered with or obstructed. Moreover, the representatives of Bali in the DPD have expressed its opposition against the reclamation. And this

must be supported,” he concluded. In the meantime, Nyoman Pasek

hoped that the KPK can immedi-ately undertake an investigation and prosecute the destroyers on the island’s natural resources, includ-ing the elements of the officials involved. “I absolutely agree and support the move of the KPK. Do not let this small Bali be increasing-ly undermined by rogue elements taking advantage of the destruction of natural resources,” said Pasek, Wednesday (May 20).

He pointed out the destruction of natural resources in Karangasem. From the observation and investi-gation by police, said Pasek, illegal miners freely do quarry activities as supported by individuals of the of-ficials. Similarly, the effort of inves-tors doing reclamation should also

become the concern of the KPK.To that end, the DPD members

from Bali must more seriously ad-dress the issues and forward the interests of Bali. As Balinese people’s representatives in the center, they must speak out regarding the dam-ages to natural resources on this small island. “Once again, I hope the KPK can come down to Bali as soon as possible in order to see directly about severe destruction of natural resources here (Bali—Ed),” he said.

As reported previously (BP: May 20), to carry out the eradication of corruption in the region, the KPK makes cooperation with the DPD. This cooperation is realized by signing a memorandum of under-standing (MoU).

Acting Chairman of the KPK, Taufiequrrahman Ruki, said that

limited human resources make it undertake a variety of strategies, including asking for the help of the DPD to support the work of the institution. Cooperation with DPD, said Ruki, is based on consideration that KPK is unable to monitor the whole area related to the manage-ment of natural resources and local finance.

Currently, the KPK is focusing on natural resource management in the region. He judged that the DPD plays a very important role because every three months they have recess and can help the KPK to supervise whether the natural resource man-agement program has been carried out properly or not. “We need supervision in the management of natural resources in the region,” he said. DENPASAR - Recommendation of the As-sessor Team of the 11 National Tourism Stra-tegic Area (KSPN) of Bali was already sent to the Minister of Tourism last February 12. The team recommended removing the Besakih area, Mount Agung and the surrounding areas as well as Menjangan Island and Bali Barat National Park from the Appendix of the Government Regulation No.50/2011 on the National Tourism Strategic Area. However, so far there has been no follow-up from central government related to the recommendation even though some representatives of the Ministry of Tourism already came to the Bali Development Planning Board (Bappeda) to meet the Assessor Team of the National Tour-ism Strategic Area.

“A week ago there was a representative from central government, the ministry, came to give an explanation to our team. But it was only attended by Mr. Anom (Secretary of the Assessor Team of the 11 KSPN, I Putu Anom—Ed),” said the Head of the Bappeda Bali, Putu Astawa, when asked for his confirmation, Thursday.

According to him, representatives of the Ministry of Tourism would just like to explain what becom-ing the concerns among a number of figures in Bali related to the KSPN. Astawa did not mention whether the meeting is meant to get an answer or follow-up from central government on the recommendation of the Assessor Team. “To optimize, we intensify the team. What becoming of turmoil and anxiety will be asked for the answer from here (the ministry—Ed),” he explained.

Since the meeting last week was only attended by few people, Astawa is scheduling another meeting next week. “Recently only few people were present, so that we want to re-organize the meeting. Hopefully, we can follow it up next week by holding a discus-sion with the figures (Assessor Team—Ed) and the ministry,” he added. (kmb32)

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia’s Prime Minister Najib Razak laid out his govern-ment’s growth strategy for the next five years on Thursday, mixing spending on infrastructure with populist pledges on jobs and housing as he looks to shore up support amid growing criticism.

Presenting the plan to parliament, Najib forecast gross national income per capita (GNI) would rise 7.9 percent per annum - enough to hit the goal set two decades ago of joining the ranks of high-income nations by 2020.

Najib, who leads a government under fire over allegations of state corruption and mismanagement, said Malaysia’s real GDP would grow at a steady 5 to 6 percent annu-ally until 2020, despite the impact of falling energy prices on the oil and gas producer.

“We foresee greater volatility and uncer-tainty in the global economy as a result of the decline in oil prices, realignment of exchange rates, as well as geopolitical risks,” Najib said in a foreword to the five-year blueprint.

“In order to sustain our growth momentum and ensure that the rakyat (people) continue to prosper, we need to forge ahead with greater resolve and introduce bold measures for the long-term benefit of all Malaysians.”

The target of becoming a fully developed economy by 2020 was first laid out by long-serving former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, now a scathing critic of Najib over alleged corruption in debt-ridden state investment fund 1MDB.

The 11th Malaysian Economic Plan pledged 260 billion ringgit ($72.18 billion) to achieving its development goals over the next five years, and included promises of more jobs and affordable housing as the govern-ment seeks to rebuild popular support.

The plan comes as Malaysia navigates a tricky economic environment of slumping energy prices that threaten oil and gas rev-enues. The country’s currency, the ringgit, has dropped to six-year lows against the dollar.

“The plan was drafted for an ideal envi-ronment,” said Kenanga Investment Bank economist Wan Suhaimie Wan Saidie. “It’s hard to judge if the plan would be success-ful after 5 years when anything can happen politically and economically.”

In the blueprint, Najib said GNI per capita would reach 54,100 ringgit ($15,690) in 2020 - just above the 2020 target of $15,000 - with average monthly household income increas-ing to 10,540 ringgit from 6,141 ringgit in 2014. (rtr)

OAK BROOK, Ill. — Hundreds of pro-testers marched around McDonald’s suburban Chicago headquarters Wednesday, shutting down at least one building on the corporate campus as they called for pay of $15 an hour and a union.

About 100 protesters were arrested for trespassing as they temporarily blocked two streets around the McDonald’s campus a day before the company’s annual shareholder meeting. McDonald’s closed a nearby res-taurant because of traffic concerns, and told employees in a building targeted by protest-ers they should work from home, company spokeswoman Heidi Barker Sa Shekhem said.

The campaign for $15 an hour and a union began in late 2012 and has involved a range of tactics, including demonstrations in cities around the country.

Authorities estimated up to 2,000 people took part in Wednesday’s demonstration, some carrying signs declaring, “We are worth more.” Dozens of buses were used to transport people to demonstration, with some coming from as far away as New York.

The Rev. William Barber of Goldsboro,

North Carolina, said the campaign extends beyond pushing for a living wage. He called it a fight for racial equality, noting people of color are disproportionally working in low wage jobs.

Corey Anderson, 21, who works at a Chi-cago McDonald’s, said he makes $8.25 an hour after working for the fast-food chain for more than two years. That’s not enough to live on after rent and utilities are paid, he said.

“I feel like they don’t understand what it’s like to make what we make,” he said.

Sa Shekhem said the company respects the right to protest.

“When it comes it comes to the minimum wage, that is a national discussion, that is not a McDonald’s issue, it’s an economic issue,” she said. “We’ll look to the folks in Washing-ton to determine what happens.”

Earlier this year, McDonald’s said it would raise its starting pay for workers to $1 above the local minimum wage. Labor organizers said the move falls short because it only ap-plies to company-owned stores.

McDonald’s Corp. owns about 10 percent of its stores in the U.S., while the rest are run by franchisees. (ap)

In Tokyo, the greenback slipped to 121.17 yen, from 121.32 yen in New York.

The euro crept up to $1.1114 and 134.66 yen from $1.1096 and 134.61 yen in US trade.

The Fed minutes suggested that a June interest rate hike was unlikely and that poli-cymakers were worried about the outlook for the world’s top economy.

“Many participants” at the Fed policy meeting “thought it unlikely that the data available in June” would meet conditions required for a rate hike, the minutes said.

The board expressed concern about weak economic reports in the first quarter, although they were generally viewed as being caused by “transitory” factors, such as severe winter weather and a West Coast port strike that ended in late February.

Since the April meeting, a batch of tepid economic data has further muddied the waters for the Fed, which is considering a rate hike from record lows, where they have been since late 2008 during the financial crisis.

Traders will be tracking the Bank of Ja-pan’s two-day policy meeting, which started Thursday.

While the bank is not expected to expand its 80 trillion yen stimulus programme after better-than-expected first-quarter growth data this week, it could improve its outlook for the economy.

However, the yen remains under pressure because of the BoJ’s loose monetary policy. It has slumped 3.2 percent over the past month against a basket of nine developed-nation counterparts, according to Bloomberg News.

“The pressure on the yen from the BoJ’s monetary easing is showing up across cur-rencies, wherever traders can see chances to make gains,” said Daisaku Ueno, chief currency strategist at MUFJ Morgan Stanley in Tokyo.

“Expectations for an imminent BoJ eas-ing have diminished but those for prolonged monetary easing are growing.” (afp)

DENPASAR - Other than investors, drug traffickers and criminals, gambling bookies are also vying to make profits in Bali. Various modi operandi are committed to smooth their ille-gal businesses. Chief of Bali Police, Dr. Ronny F. Sompie, does not want to miss and to be deceived by the bookies. Numerous attempts have been made to anticipate them, one of which is by holding a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on electronic games to deepen the understanding whether it contains the element of gambling or not.

For instance, it is related to the permit submission of JAB Zone electronic gaming located on the third floor of Benoa Square on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, Kedonganan Kuta. Although it has owned the permission of tourism business for game arena, police chief does not want to carelessly issue an entertainment permit if it has an indication to gambling.

“In carrying out their duties, Bali Police provide public ser-vices, safeguard and protection. The effort is more focused on the prevention against criminal acts or disruption of social order,” said the police chief.

Similarly, added Ronny, it also includes gambling-related crimes. If there are games, such as agility games, based on public information, there is possibility to contain gambling element. On that account, he prefers to communicate or make dialogue with relevant agencies such as the agency issuing the license or tax collection section, including the authority conducting surveillance and law enforcement, namely police and the community.

“It is meant to anticipate the agility games containing the ele-ments of gambling. Any games containing speculation elements must be strictly supervised. We do not want the games to lead to transaction involving betting money,” he said.

Director of Bali Police Intelligence and Security, Wayan Sukawinaya, explained about the types of game. There are four large tables for magic monkey games, 30 kinds of shooting games, fishing games and Doraemon games. In addition, there are also game machines using computer software and hardware.

According to JAB Zone Manager, Roberta, the magic monkey games have speculative nature. In order to play, customers mostly consist of Chinese and Taiwanese travelers must buy ID card costing IDR 50,000 and the prize is in the form of merchandise. “The prize does not use money and it cannot be sold for cash at our place,” said Roberta.

However, Ronny even highlighted the magic monkey games because they have speculative nature. “Although it is claimed that it cannot be cashed at the location, it can be cashed outside the location. Maybe I can find the connection. At least, it can be caught red handed. We do not want to be blamed or negatively highlighted by the community,” said Ronny.

Modus operandi of the gambling is indeed applying discon-nected system. He does not want any disconnection and the gam-bling is packaged to hide it so that it seems to get disconnected, whereas it has connection. I organize this FGD because I want the owner can give honest exposures. “Do not play hide-and-seek,” he added.

“It may involve the use of money behind the games. If it is caught, we will take firm action. Do not let people come to the arena with the motivation of not getting a prize but getting money,” said the former Spokesperson of the National Police of the RI.

The FGD was attended by the experts of criminal law, infor-mation technology, tax and related agencies that produced seven points of conclusions, namely the JAB Zone already has permit for organizing agility games according to the prevailing rules. The prizes prepared by JAB Zone include groceries, mobile phone, television, refrigerator and a doll. It needs to be further explored because in addition to be interesting it is not only intended for children. The magic monkey game is having the nuance of specu-lative gambling and not only an agility game so that it becomes one of the indicators if it has the element of gambling that must be anticipated. Participants of the FGD agreed that it needs su-pervision in accordance with the competence of each agency to prevent any gambling crimes at the location. (rah)

“As the Indonesian Military Medicine Association (IMMA) has been active in international medical programs, the ICMM accepts Indo-nesia’s leadership of the international medicine committee,” Secretary General of ICMM Roger Van Hoof stated.

Indonesia now chairs the ICMM, following the completion of Saudi Arabia’s term. The position has been officially handed over during the opening ceremony of the 41st International Medicine Conference Committee in Nusa Dua, Bali, on May 18, 2015.

According to Hoof, the capability of the Indonesian Military Medicine

Association is no longer doubted as it has been credited for lending assis-tance to other countries, both those suffering from disasters and also the ones that are engulfed in conflicts, as a peacekeeping force.

The Indonesian Military Medi-cine Association was also active in dispatching aid to the Nepalese people when their country was hit by an earthquake on April 25.

Regarding the aid given to conflict ridden countries, the ICMM, which has no political interests, offers op-portunity to all countries, including Indonesia, to actively participate in providing health assistance to disas-ter victims.

“We call on all ICMM member countries to help each other,” Hoof emphasized.

Head of the Indonesian Mili-tary Health Center Major General Daniel Tjen, who is also the chair-person of the 41st International Medicine Conference Committee, noted that the Indonesian military medical team has been actively involved in the health mission in Nepal.

“We are striving to provide hu-manitarian aid to Nepal. We have sent a task force to the country and have established a field hospital to help the disaster victims,” Tjen added. (ant)

Authorities sank the vessels in public displays at several sites Wednes-day, local media reported. The boats included one from China and others from Vietnam, Thailand and the Phil-ippines.

Some of the boats were blown up with dynamite and pictures showed the vessels engulfed in flames as they went down.

Indonesia has defended its policy of seizing and destroying illegal fishing boats, a hardline approach that risks attracting regional anger.

“Without the continued fight against illegal fishing, we won’t be able to improve the welfare of our fishermen,” Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti told The Jakarta Post newspaper.

The Chinese vessel sunk was report-edly a large ship detained in 2009 for fishing in Indonesia’s exclusive eco-nomic zone in the South China Sea.

President Joko Widodo has taken a hardline approach to illegal fishing since taking office in October, vowing to stamp out a practice he says costs South-east Asia’s biggest economy billions of

dollars in lost revenues every year. Indonesia had already destroyed

boats from Malaysia, Thailand, Viet-nam, Papua New Guinea and the Phil-ippines in highly publicised displays.

Authorities also say foreigners il-legally fishing in Indonesia are partly responsible for massive damage to the environment due to the widespread use of explosives and cyanide.

Widodo hopes that increased rev-enues from fishing can help boost economic growth, which has sunk to a five-year low. (afp)

LHOKSEUMAWE - Three Rohingya toddlers are under intensive care at a local community health cen-ter after suffering from diarrhea. The health team was directly treating the three toddlers due to their poor health condition, Aceh Timur Deputy District Chief Syahrul Bin Syama’un stated.

The refugees eventually rescued on Saturday are in poor health condition and prone to any disease as they were out in the open sea for days, Syahrul noted.

“Therefore, the health team is now carrying out the medical checkup of these ‘boat people,’ as their medi-cal assessment has not been done since they landed ashore,” Syahrul remarked.

A total of 433 Rohingya refugees from Myanmar and Bangladesh are now being relocated to an old paper mill in Bayeun Hamlet from Simpang Lhee Hamlet.

In a bid to provide a more hygienic location and to improve their health condition, the refugees were relocated.

According to data from the Aceh government, the refugees had arrived in the region in two batches, with the first batch comprising 576 arriving at the coast of Lapang in North Aceh on May 10.

The refugees in the first batch comprised 247 Ban-gladeshis, who were all men, and 329 ethnic Rohingyas from Myanmar, including 168 men, 69 women, and 92 children.

The second batch of 1,390 refugees arrived on May 15 through the waters of Langsa and Aceh Tamiang.

They were heading to Malaysia but were deceived by the boat provider and left adrift at sea until they were rescued by the fishermen from Aceh.

Rohingya people have been living in Myanmar since a long time, with some of them being appointed as government leaders in Yangon. (ant)

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo expressed hope that the simultaneous regional head elections will be held based on schedule at the end of 2015.

“Regarding the regional head elections the head of states wants that it will be implemented simul-taneously based on schedule,” Teten Masduki, a member the President’s Communication Team in a press statement through an electronic message, said on Wednesday.

Thus, Teten said, the President wants the political parties which have dual leaderships to settle their problems. The President will not interfere.

“The President provides support to the General Elections Commission (KPU) to prepare regulations and technical preparations to support the implemen-tation of the simultaneous regional elections,” Teten added.

He said that the President also called on all sides to contribute to the elections so that there would be qual-ity improvement of democracy in the implementation of the simultaneous regional head elections. (ant)

JAKARTA - Indonesia has sunk 41 foreign boats across the archipelago, reports said Thursday, as part of an ongoing push to stop illegal fishing in its waters.

The capture of Palmyra, a for-mer stopping point for caravans on the Silk Road, is the latest blow to efforts to hold back the advanc-ing jihadists, following the fall of Iraq’s Ramadi.

“IS fighters are in all parts of Tadmur, including near the archeological site,” Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP, using the Arabic name for the city.

The jihadists also proclaimed their capture of the entire city, which is strategically located at the crossroads of key highways lead-ing west to Damascus and Homs, and east to Iraq.

The Observatory said regime troops had pulled back from posi-tions in and around Palmyra, in-cluding from an army intelligence outpost, a military airport and a prison which the jihadists captured overnight.

The monitor, which relies on a

network of sources on the ground, said IS now controls more than 95,000 square kilometres of Syria, which has been engulfed by a multi-sided civil war since a 2011 uprising.

The jihadists, notorious for de-molishing archaeological treasures since declaring a “caliphate” last year straddling Iraq and Syria, fought their way into Palmyra on foot after breaking through in the city’s north.

“Regime troops collapsed and withdrew from their positions without resistance,” said Mo-hamed Hassan al-Homsi, an activ-ist originally from Palmyra.

The assault on Palmyra came days after the militants took the Iraqi city of Ramadi, their most significant victory since mid-2014 when they conquered swathes of land, sparking a US-led air cam-paign to support Baghdad.

A US State Department official

said the loss of Ramadi would force Washington to take an “ex-tremely hard look” at its strategy against IS.

The jihadists sparked interna-tional outrage this year when they blew up the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud and smashed artefacts in the museum of Mosul, both in Iraq.

“The situation is very bad,” Syria’s antiquities chief, Mamoun Abdulkarim, said on Wednes-day as IS overran the north of Palmyra.

“If only five members of IS go into the ancient buildings, they’ll destroy everything,” he added, calling for international action to save the city.

Hundreds of statues and arte-facts from Palmyra’s museum have been transferred out of the city, ac-cording to Abdulkarim, but many others -- including massive tombs -- could not be moved. (afp)

SEOUL - South Korean health officials confirmed the country’s third case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) on Thursday, with the two latest cases found in people who had been in contact with the first patient after he returned from the Middle East.

Authorities have isolated as a precaution another 64 people who are family members or medical workers treating those three patients, said Yang Byung-guk, director of the health ministry’s Korea Centers for Disease Control & Prevention.

Test results came back positive for a 63-year-old woman, the wife of the first proven case, as well as for a 76-year-old man who shared a hospital room with him, the ministry said.

The first man was diagnosed with the disease on Wednesday after a trip to Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the Unit-ed Arab Emirates, where the disease broke out, Yang told a briefing.

Shin Hyoung-shik, an infectious disease specialist in charge of treat-ing the patients, said the latest two confirmed cases had fevers but no sign of breathing difficulties.

“The first patient has been recover-ing, with less difficulty in breathing,” Shin said.

The ministry said on Wednesday it saw no chance of the disease spread-ing into the wider population because those who had been in contact with the first patient had been isolated.

The disease’s fatality rate is 30-40 percent and its incubation period is two to 14 days, experts say.

“The 40 percent death rate is quite high,” Choi Jun-yong, an associate professor at the infectious diseases division of Severance Hospital, told Reuters by telephone.

“If infected, patients in many cases need to have artificial respiration treat-ments for respiratory failures.”

First identified in humans in 2012, MERS is caused by a coronavirus, from the same family as the one that caused a deadly outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome in China in 2003. There is no cure or vaccine.

South Korea’s health ministry said 23 countries had a combined 1,142 cases of MERS and 465 deaths had been reported, as of May 16. Of the total, 1,117 cases, or 97.8 percent, were in the Middle East.

There is usually a surge of cases in the northern spring and most cases have come from hospital transmis-sion. (rtr)

RIGA, Latvia — European Union leaders will again try to draw Rus-sia’s neighbors closer at their Eastern Partnership summit starting Thursday in what has become a rite of geopoliti-cal gamesmanship on the future of the continent.

The last summit with six eastern nations 1½ years ago turned into a dramatic standoff over Ukraine, with then-leader Viktor Yanukovych sud-denly withdrawing from signing an association with the EU and instead turning toward Moscow and President Vladimir Putin.

Since that meeting in Vilnius, Lithuania, the pro-EU government elected after Yanukovych’s ouster has learned the costs of turning away from Moscow: Russia annexed Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula, large swathes of eastern territory bordering Russia are embroiled in conflict and the nation is in deep economic decline.

On the eve of this year’s summit, Russia again drew the line how far neighbors could go.

“We don’t see our neighbors’ aspirations to strengthen ties with the European Union as a tragedy, but to make those processes develop posi-tively they mustn’t hurt the interests of the Russian Federation,” Foreign

Minister Sergei Lavrov told the upper house of the Russian parliament.

For dinner Thursday, almost all of the EU leaders, including Ger-man Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande will line up for sobering talks with their counterparts or top officials from Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Moldova.

Putin will be nowhere in sight, but is still expected to dominate discus-sions.

Since the Iron Curtain came down, many former communist nations have been pulled out of Moscow’s orbit, in-cluding summit host Latvia and Baltic neighbors Estonia and Lithuania — former Soviet republics that are now EU and NATO members. Under the leadership of Putin, opposition has stiffened and turned into sometimes open political conflict.

Carl Bildt, then Sweden’s foreign minister, was a key player at the Vilnius summit, seeing the hand of Moscow behind Ukraine’s sudden about-face to dismiss the EU. He said the Riga summit will reaffirm ties between the EU and the post-communist states rather than yield any headline-grabbing new agree-ments. (ap)

CANGGU - Horseback riding while looking at Canggu Beach pan-orama is really absorbing. Accom-panied by the four-legged animal, you can feel the unique ambience of the Island of the Gods. Terraced field planted with verdant paddy as well as graced with farmers’ activity becoming the essence of Balinese culture can be seen with

naked eye. Activities of rural community

always give peaceful and real views to the eye. Not to mention, the wild life of small animals such as lizards, dragonflies and birds will be able to make visitors closer to nature and enrich the experience. All of these charms can only be enjoyed in the Canggu Horse Riding located in the

area of Canggu tourist resort.A total of 18 horses belong-

ing to the age of 10-15 years will strongly deliver every rider around the village and beautiful beach area. There are at least three beaches that can be explored, starting from Batu Bolong Beach, Brawa to Petitenget Beach being crowded with surfing activities. Amazing sunset on the

beach can be seen while enjoying the riding activity.

Canggu Horse Riding offers two package tours namely 1 hour and 1.5 hours package. Both pack-ages equally offer the same routes featuring the verdant beauty of rice fields, villages and tranquil beach. Walking along the beach freely, turn at ease and passing on the estuary

will become a very wonderful ex-perience. For those having a hobby of this kind may take a round for five times.

Travelers who frequently take the horse riding package are those from Australia, England, France and Singapore. However, during school holidays and feast days, the package is favored by domestic tourists.

Serena Williams is a 19-time Grand Slam winner, at 33 still the undisputed queen of tennis and the top seed.

Maria Sharapova has won two out of the last three titles in Paris, including last year, and at 28 is in the prime of her glittering career.

Should the seedings hold firm and the American plays the Russian in the final on June 6, however, past experience points to there being only one winner.

Williams has not lost to Sharapova since 2004 and leads their head-to-heads by an astounding 17-2, the last of these coming in the Australian Open final at the start of the year.

The outcome was the same in 2013 when the pair met for the first, and to date only time, in the French Open final leaving Sharapova no doubt hoping that someone can do her a huge favour by downing Williams in the early rounds as did Spain’s Garbine Muguruza last year.

Still, Sharapova believes she is hitting form at the right time and fancies her chances on clay, Williams’ least-favourite surface. “I feel I’m in a much better spot to where I was physically. I am prepared enough to be

ready,” she said after her win in Rome at the weekend.

An upset for Williams is not out of the question as she has been vulnerable in the past on the Paris clay and, after losing her 27-match unbeaten run in the semi-finals of the Madrid Open earlier this month, she subsequently withdrew from the Italian Open with a sore elbow.

Asked then if her decision could harm her chances in Paris, where she crashed out at the first round last year having triumphed in Rome, Williams said: “I don’t think it will. If I continue to play it could get worse and I could have a situation on my hands.”

Williams will have motivation in full as her win in Melbourne was her 19th Grand Slam singles title, just three shy of the Open-era record of 22 set by Steffi Graf.

It would also leave her halfway to becom-ing just the fourth woman to achieve the fabled calendar-year Grand Slam after Graf (1988), Margaret Court (1970) and Maureen Connolly (1953).

Williams and Sharapova will start as strong favourites to reach the final, but there are players in the draw who could derail them. (afp)

ATLANTA - LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the top-seeded Atlanta Hawks 97-89 on Wednesday to open the NBA Eastern Conference finals. With a berth in the NBA championship finals on the line in the best-of-seven series, J.R. Smith set a Cavaliers club record for three-pointers, draining eight from beyond the arc.

His 28 points accounted for all of the scoring by Cleveland reserves. “I was just trying, if anything, to take good shots,” Smith said. “I got in a rhythm early and just stayed aggressive.”

Smith’s long-range bombs came in bunch-es, including three in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter as he helped Cleveland build an 18-point lead.

He broke James’s prior Cavaliers record for three-pointers in a playoff game by one. James made three against Washington in game four of the 2006 Eastern conference quarter-finals.

“Those who know J.R. know when he gets hot, he gets smoking hot,” said Cavaliers

coach David Blatt.“He was terrific. Probably overlooked is

how well he defended and that he got eight rebounds.”

Four-time NBA Most Valuable Player James scored 31 points, pulled down eight rebounds and handed out six assists for the Cavaliers.

He said defense was the key to the vic-tory.

“We’re the number one defensive team in the playoffs. In order for us to win, ultimately we have to defend,” said James, who is play-ing in his fifth straight Eastern Conference finals after four appearances with Miami.

James has won two titles with the Heat and returned to his home state and first NBA team the Cavaliers, vowing to bring Cleveland a championship.

He sealed Wednesday’s victory with a thundering dunk in the final minute.

Tristan Thompson added 14 points and 10 rebounds in the win and Kyrie Irving had 10 points and six assists in 27 minutes. (afp)

MONACO - Fernando Alonso has welcomed plans to shake up Formula One from 2017, with the former two-time world champion claiming the sport has been going the wrong way for several years.

Asked how he could see what was going wrong, the Spaniard, who won back-to-back world titles in 2005 and 2006, said: “I think the grandstands tell us.”

Attendances at Grands Prix have been dropping along with

television viewing figures, leading to last week’s proposals from the Formula One Strategy Group to revamp the rules.

The group said it wants to see faster cars and the return of refu-elling which has been out of the sport since 2010.

McLaren driver Alonso said he felt a return to testing would solve most problems.

“If the tests come back we will have similar rules to seven

or eight years ago, which means the last four or five years we have been going in the wrong direction,” the 33-year-old said, point ing out that refuel l ing would add more spectacle and imagination.

“Probably, it will open some kind of strategy imagination that could help you in some of the races,” he said.

“If you can choose whatever fuel you can start on, or do the

first stint with. Things like that helped in the past. I remember in 2003 getting some pole positions with half the fuel of the others and then, in the race, you see what happened.

“The first ten laps you are lead-ing the group and it may rain or have a safety car. Many things can happen that will change the weekend.2

Alonso hit out at the current predictability of Formula One.

“If you gave me a piece of pa-per and a pen, I will put you the grid order for here, Canada and Austria. I will miss one or two positions, but this is what prob-ably the fans are not welcoming now.”

Finally, in a scathing assess-ment of modern Formula One, he said he had not felt pushed to perform since 2005.

“In 2005, the cars were eight seconds quicker.” (afp)

DUBAI - Major sponsors Visa and Coca-Cola Wednesday pressed FIFA to help improve labour condi-tions in Qatar as Amnesty Interna-tional accused the 2022 World Cup host of failing to deliver on prom-ised reforms for migrant workers.

“We continue to be troubled by the reports coming out of Qatar related to the World Cup and mi-grant worker conditions,” credit card giant Visa said, adding that it had expressed its “grave concern” directly to football’s top body.

Coke said it was also press-ing FIFA to demand more labour reforms from Qatar, after fresh accusations from rights group Amnesty that labourers in the tiny oil-rich country were dying in their hundreds.

“We expect FIFA to continue taking these matters seriously and to work toward further progress,” the company said.

Their statements, which come after similar criticism from sponsor Adidas, are the strongest indication

yet that high-profile commercial backers are becoming increasingly uneasy over the treatment of mi-grant workers in Qatar.

FIFA is due to hold a meeting later this month that could see a resolution put forward to remove the World Cup from the country -- the first ever awarded to the Middle East -- because of the slow pace of labour reforms.

World football’s governing body said it would continue “to urge the Qatari authorities to accomplish

reforms”.“FIFA has repeatedly urged

publicly and with the highest au-thorities in Qatar that fair working conditions for all workers in Qatar are imperative,” it said.

But Amnesty warned that “with-out prompt action, the pledges Qa-tar made last year are at serious risk of being dismissed as a mere public relations stunt to ensure the Gulf state can cling on” to the event.

In the latest of a string of reports on migrant worker “abuse”, the

rights group said Doha had failed to deliver reforms in key areas such as pay, the “kafala” system that blocks workers from leaving the country and curbs on changing employers.

Some 440 migrant workers from India and Nepal -- the two countries with the largest number of migrants working on World Cup projects -- died in 2014, Amnesty said, cit-ing their governments’ figures but without detailing how they were killed. (afp)

League final against Barcelona in Berlin on June 6 to complete their season and emulate the treble feats of Inter Milan, in 2010.

“It was a great final,” said Juve coach Massi-miliano Allegri. “Now we just have to keep our focus until June 6.

“We’ll go to Berlin having won the league and the cup, but Barcelona are in great form, just as we are.”

Retired AC Milan standout Paolo Maldini and TV rights entrepreneur Riccardo Silva are launching the Miami Football Club in the North American Soccer League.

Miami FC plans to start playing in 2016. The NASL is the United States’ second-tier competition, below Major League Soccer.

The team will play “in one of the existing world-class stadiums of Miami,” a statement said from the partners said Wednesday.

Maldini and Silva are backed by a group of international investors

led by Antonio Barreto, a longtime sports and media entrepreneur and Miami resident who will be CEO of the club.

“I’m proud and excited to be part of this venture,” Maldini said. “I strongly believe in the growth of soccer in USA, and this is the perfect project to develop a top-class soccer team in one of the most important cities of the world.

“We believe that the fast-growing NASL will be the perfect platform to develop a successful team and a valuable business,” Maldini added.

“Miami has been my second home for 15 years, so I look forward to spending more and more time here as co-owner of the Miami FC, giving my enthusiastic (contributions) for its success.”

Maldini retired in 2009 after play-ing for Milan for 25 seasons, winning seven Serie A titles and five Champi-ons League trophies.

Silva, the president and founder of the MP & Silva media agency that holds rights to the English Premier League, NBA and Serie A and various other leagues, lives in Miami.

“I’m proud to support a venture that not only is bringing world-class professional soccer to Miami but also a project with an active charity program for the local community,” Silva said.

The NASL currently contains 11 teams in the United States in Canada, highlighted by the New York Cosmos. Separately, David Beckham is plan-ning to start an MLS team in Miami. His group has been searching for a downtown site to build a stadium.

NASL commissioner Bill Peterson called the Miami FC announcement

“another testament to the strength of our rapidly growing organization, our owner-friendly structure, and the growing popularity of NASL soccer worldwide.

“Riccardo Silva is a world leader in soccer media, and he has decided, along with his partners, that Miami and the NASL are part of an important future for the game globally,” Peterson added. “Miami finally has an owner-ship group with a global vision and the experience to build a proper club that all of Miami will be proud to support.” (ap)

LONDON - Sunderland produced a gutsy rearguard action to preserve their Premier League status with a tense 0-0 draw against Arsenal on Wednesday. Dick Advocaat’s side knew a point at the Emirates Stadium would be enough to guarantee their survival and they achieved that goal with an obdurate defensive display that kept Arsenal at bay despite a bar-rage of pressure from the hosts.

Superbly marshalled by holding midfielder Lee Cattermole and central defenders Sebastian Coates and John O’Shea, Sunderland still needed a fine performance from goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon to emerge unscathed.

The Black Cats, now four points clear of third bottom Hull, can start planning for next season instead of nervously facing a decisive trip to champions Chelsea in Sunday’s final round of fixtures.

“Arsenal were the better side but our organisation was unbelievably good. The emotion was so high,” said Advocaat, who left the pitch crying tears of joy at full-time.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling that we did it by ourselves. The players gave everything to stay up.”

Despite failing to win for the fourth time in their last five matches, Arsenal have likely done enough to secure a third place finish and automatic quali-fication for next season’s Champions League group stage.

Arsene Wenger’s team are three points clear of fourth placed Man-chester United with a significantly better goal difference with only one match to play.

Sunderland’s point means that the final relegation place from the Premier League will be filled by either Hull or Newcastle.

Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere had an early chance to mark his return with a goal when he raced onto Alexis Sanchez’s pass, only to poke his shot tamely at Pantilimon.

Wilshere had another sight of goal when Aaron Ramsey teed him up just inside the penalty area, yet once again the midfielder couldn’t find the required accuracy as he blazed high over the crossbar.

Unsurprisingly Sunderland seemed intent solely on soaking up the pressure with a view to catching the Gunners on the break.

But even when they did launch a rare counter the paucity of their attacking ambition was laid bare when Sunderland left-back Patrick van Aanholt sprinted 50 yards before looking up to discover not a single team-mate had made a supporting run. (afp)

LONDON — Cesc Fabregas will be available for the start of Chelsea’s defense of the Premier League title next season after hav-ing a three-match ban reduced to one game following an appeal.

Fabregas was sent off against West Bromwich Albion on Monday for kicking the ball at an opponent’s

head during a break in play.Chelsea launched an appeal,

saying that a three-game ban was excessive, and it was upheld on Wednesday.

Matri’s cup winner keeps Juve treble alive

Paolo Maldini and others launching Miami FC club in NASL

ROME - An extra-time winner by Alessandro Matri kept Juventus on track for the treble as the Serie A champions ended a 20-year wait for an Italian Cup final victory with a 2-1 win over Lazio on Wednesday. Juventus were stunned after just four minutes when Stefan Radu rose to beat Marco Storari with a powerful header from a free-kick after Paul Pogba had given away a needless foul on the right flank.

from a free-kick on the right.Yet Juventus, who beat Lazio 3-0

and 2-0 in their Serie A encounters this season, were soon back on level terms.

The fingers of blame had pointed at Chiellini after Radu’s opener, but the big Juve defender was in the right place at the right time when Andrea Pirlo fired in a free-kick from 25 metres out on 10 minutes.

all the way through the Juve mid-field to offload for Danilo Cataldi, forcing Buffon to go down low to collect.

Chances were few in a far more tense second half and Lazio striker Miroslav Klose was almost invis-ible before being replaced by Felip Djordjevic seven minutes from time.

Instead, Antonio Candreva and Anderson were running the show for the Biancocelesti, albeit with little reward.

Allegri replaced Pogba with Pereyra on 78 minutes and his freshness told immediately, the Argentine tracking back to dispos-sess Anderson as the Brazilian held possession in a dangerous three-on-three.

Lazio spurned a great chance to claim a late winner, however, when Djordjevic made a complete mess of a one-on-one with Storari.

Matri, who replaced Llorente six minutes from time, had the ball in the net moments after his arrival only for the goal to be ruled offside. But Matri, who has played for four different clubs since joining Juventus in 2011, made the most of his opportunity. (afp)

Fabregas will serve his one-game suspension against Sunder-land on Sunday in the final round of the Premier League. (ap)

Matri’s cup winner keeps Juve treble alive

Pirlo’s curling delivery was headed into the area by Pogba and Chiellini

all the way through the Juve mid-field to offload for Danilo Cataldi, forcing Buffon to go down low to collect.

(afp)

(ant)

(ap)

(ant)

(kmb32)

SINGARAJA - Discussions regarding the construction of an international airport in North Bali are ongoing. This time the investor Airport Kinesis Consultant Canada is proposing to invest in the construction of an airport in coastal region of Kubutambahan, Buleleng by way of reclaiming the sea as land.

(kmb34)

DENPASAR - Governor of Bali Made Mangku Pastika acknowledged the eco-nomic slowdown of Bali.

As a result, exports of our handicrafts are also in decline,” said Pastika while paying a visit to the prepa-rations for Pesona Budaya at ISI Denpasar, on Tuesday (May 19).

On the same subject but on a separate occa-sion, Deputy Governor of Bali, I Ketut Sudik-erta, said that they are always trying to improve and boost exports, either by more intensively promoting Balinese products, or by improv-ing the quality of the products. “Most of the products made in Bali are handicrafts. If we look at exports on a national level, we in Bali remain in a relatively very good position be-cause our products have characteristics that in demand internationally,” he said after chairing the ceremony for the National Awakening Day celebrations, on Wednesday (May 20).

Sudikerta added that the provincial govern-ment of Bali also facilitates the process for those wanting to export products. Likewise, coaching, training and economic empower-ment in the form of capital for SMEs is also provided by the provincial government as a way to help drive exports. “These efforts are meant to contribute to increasing the produc-tion of export commodities to optimal levels,” he explained.

In addition to paying attention to the trade sector -particularly SMEs, Sudikerta also claims that they continuously motivate people to farm, given that the agricultural sector contributes significantly to tourism which is on par with exports as the backbone of Bali’s economy. (kmb32)

(afp)
