Fox announced Sunday that Minaj and Urban would join Carey and Jackson as judges on “Idol” following Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler’s exits in July.

Carey tried to quell rumors about her quarreling with Minaj by saying they’ve only been together two days and “a feud takes a little longer to happen.”

All the judges burst into laughter.Minaj says the new “Idol” judges are “get-

ting along wonderfully, darling.” Minaj and Carey collaborated on a remix of Carey’s song “Up Out My Face” in 2010.

Carey confessed she’s “nev-er been a fan” of singing com-petition shows.

“I’ll be completely honest,” she said. “But I realize what this show has done for such talented artists and truly giving them careers.”

When asked why TV watchers should view “Idol” versus another Fox show, “X Factor,” which boasts Britney Spears and Demi Lovato as judges, Carey simply pointed her fingers to herself.

“Did I do that? I didn’t mean that as a final gesture,” she said with a smile. “I’m sorry.”

Then the 42-year-old multiple Grammy Award-winner said she wants to help those who dream of careers in music even if they don’t get to move on to the next round on the show.

“(What) I’m bringing to the table is years of experience, writing songs, performing,” she said.

NEW YORK — Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin and Liza Minnelli took turns singing songs by the late Marvin Hamlisch during a stirring memorial service for the composer on Tuesday.

Minnelli sang “If You Really Knew Me” from the musical “They’re Playing My Song,” Franklin gave a soulful rendi-tion of “Nobody Does It Better” from the James Bond film “The Spy Who Loved Me” and Streisand brought the crowd to its feet when she finished “The Way We Were” from the film of the same name. The composer’s wife of 26 years, Terre Hamlisch, welcomed the crowd.

“These are Marvin’s melodies,” she said. “Marvin Hamlisch lives in them. This is who Marvin Hamlisch was.”

Hamlisch composed or arranged hundreds of scores for musicals and movies, including “A Chorus Line” on Broadway and the films “The Sting,” ‘’Sophie’s Choice,” ‘’Ordinary People” and “The Way We Were.” He died on Aug. 6 in Los Angeles at age 68 after a short illness.

Streisand, who wore all black and sat on a stool, said she first met Ham-

lisch in 1963 when he was her rehearsal pianist in her breakout Broadway show, “Funny Girl.” He also was tasked with getting everyone coffee.

Since Streisand didn’t drink cof-fee, he would bring her chocolate doughnuts.

“He always brought me two, and so our love affair began,” Streisand said as the crowd laughed.

Their lives would intersect in per-sonal and professional ways over the years. She sang his “The Way We Were” to a Grammy Award win in 1974, and he played at her wedding in 1998.

Franklin, in a white suit, changed some of the lyrics to the sexy James Bond song “Nobody Does It Better,” to “Marvin, you were the best.” Ham-lisch had co-written the No. 1 R&B hit “Break It to Me Gently” with Carole Bayer Sager for Franklin.

Minnelli, in a beaded dress, said she met Hamlisch when she was 14 and he was 15 and they became friends immediately. He later arranged many of Minnelli’s albums, including her first two as well as “Judy Garland & Liza Minnelli ‘Live’ at the London Palladium.”

PARIS - A French magazine ridiculed the Prophet Mohammad on Wednesday by portraying him naked in cartoons, threatening to fuel the anger of Muslims around the world who are already incensed by a film depicting him as a womanizing buffoon. The French government, which had urged the magazine not to print the images, said it was temporarily shutting down premises including embassies and schools in 20 countries on Friday, when protests sometimes break out after Muslim prayers.

Riot police were deployed to protect the Paris offices of satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo after it hit the news stands with a cover showing an Orthodox Jew pushing the turbaned figure of Mohammad in a wheelchair. On the inside pages, several caricatures of the Prophet showed him naked.

Reacting to the publication, Essam Erian, acting head of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party, told Reuters: “We reject and con-demn the French cartoons that dishonor the Prophet and we condemn any action that defames the sacred according to people’s beliefs.”

Such achievement, said an econ-omist from Udayana University, Dr. IGW Murjana Yasa, had not made proud. It happened because the high growth rate remained to leave about 168,780 poor people and some 52,380 unemployed people.

“Economic growth does not make proud because the local people of Bali have not fully en-

joyed the rapid growth. Similar condition also happens in national level where many people are still poor and unemployed,” said Mur-jana Yasa in Denpasar, Tuesday (Sep 18).

According to him, the conditions occurred because local community had not been able to participate in the existing business opportunities.

The economic growth was domi-nantly driven by big businessmen who tended to vanquish small businesses.

“Regional and central govern-ment have promoted the existing SME sector. By doing so, the rate of economic growth can be enjoyed by the lower class community and does not cause inequality,” he said.

Meanwhile, an economist from Warmadewa University, I Wayan Arjana, agreed if the economic growth should push the growth of Micro, Small and Medium En-terprises (MSMEs) in Bali. Most

of the communities on the island highly depended on the sector.

“It’s no use if Bali undergoes a rapid economic growth if the local community is unable to enjoy it. In my mind, it will be better if the economy does not grow but can be enjoyed evenly,” he said.

He said the provincial govern-ment of Bali needed to interference with the major companies in Bali in order to protect small businesses that dominantly run by local com-munities. By doing so, it would result in a mutually beneficial symbiosis.

“It’s time for the government to find out a solution to the problem and set it forth through regional bylaws that enables the growth of business without vanquishing the large and small businesses,” he said.

Chairman of the Business Com-petition Supervisory Commission (KPPU), Tadjuddin Noer Said, ear-lier also said that government should not be too proud of achieving the economic growth because the local people of Bali were just spectators in the middle of the rapid growth.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

surfer’s move on every wave coming through in the afternoon sun, Mega jumped out to a com-manding lead, consistently launching and landing aerial maneuvers like he was on autopilot. Both Wilson and Rondi appeared to be feeling the pres-sure, with Wilson landing an aerial for a 4.5 point score with his first wave and then failing to find anything until near the end of the final, sitting in fourth place for most of the 25 minutes. Rondi struggled until midway through the heat, when he finally shook off the nerves and banged out a couple of scores to grab 3rd place. Made Darma-yasa meanwhile was sitting comfortably in 2nd spot, feeling no pressure and just having fun.

Amlapura (Bali Post) –Another food poisoning seemed to happen in Bali

this time at Rendang, Karangasem which three pupils of SDN 5 Pempatan Elementary and a resident victim-ized after eating a fried sausage sold by a walkabout seller in front of their school on Monday (17/9) and Tuesday (18/9). The four victims got the symptoms after 20 minutes eating it which then the seller escaped. Even though this seller have stayed there all this time, no one knew its name or address.

One resident poisoned, I Made Sumarjaya (21) explained to Bali Post that the pupil poisoned on Monday with her was Putu Astawa while the other two came the next day were sixth grade pupil Kadek Rudi Sapta Wardita (11) and fifth grade pupil I Gede Tapa (10). The worst infected was Kadek Rudi who got high fever, heartburn, headache, shivering and pale face. Teachers and pupils of the school were furious which then brought them to a Help Branch of Health Community Center nearby. All three victims got better and allowed to go home while Rudi was forwarded to Rendang Health Community Center. Doctor who treated, dr. Angga Wirayogi, stated they are being food poisoned yet it is not known if the poison comes from the sausage or the sauce which could be expired or mixed with poison. Meanwhile samples were taken from victim’s remaining food. (013)

The competition held by the Buleleng Fishery and Maritime Affairs posed a significant event for fishermen in Bule-leng. Aside from relieving fatigue after catching fish for several days in the sea, they could also relax for a whole day last Tuesday by showing off their strength and agility in controlling the screen and responding the wind direction.

Uniquely, the fishermen also deco-rated their boats so as to look more beautiful. To decorate their boat, some of them were even willing to spend money from IDR 500,000 to IDR 2 million. The fund was used to paint the boat as well as repair screens and mast. “I’ve participated in this race for 61 times and never won. Nevertheless, I am happy

because if getting lucky I can win a door prize,” said Jamaludin, one of the fishermen coalesced into the group of Bina Bahari Seririt.

The Head of Buleleng Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, Heronimus Hue, said the race was originally held last August. Since it coincided with the celebration of the Eid, Galungan and Kuningan, the race was then postponed until Septem-ber. “The race should be organized last August in conjunction with the celebra-tion of the Indonesia’s Independence Day,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Regent Putu Agus Suradnyana who watched the race said that fishermen as coastal community relying on their livelihoods from the

sea was one of the maritime potentials that should be developed and preserved. Moreover, the government had now taken strategic measures to protect the fishery and maritime resources by pre-paring Strategic Plan for Coastal Area Management 2009-2027. “As a follow up of the strategic plan, we are prepar-ing a zoning plan for coastal territory management that will be discussed in the parliament,” he explained.

Specialists at the University of Goteborg said they performed the surgery over the weekend with-out complications but added that they won’t consider it successful unless the women give birth to healthy children.

“That’s the best proof,” said Michael Olausson, one of the surgeons.

One of the unidentified women had her uterus removed many years ago because of cervical cancer, while the other was born without a womb. Both are in their 30s.

They will undergo a year of ob-servation before doctors attempt to help them get pregnant via in vitro fertilization, in which em-bryos created with eggs from their own ovaries will be implanted in their wombs.

Researchers around the world have been looking for ways to transplant wombs so that women who have lost a uterus to cancer or other diseases can become pregnant.

Fertility experts hailed the Swedish transplants as a signifi-

cant step but stressed it remains to be seen whether they will result in successful pregnancies.

Even if the approach works, it is unclear how many women will choose such an option, given the risks and the extreme nature of the operation compared with, say, using a surrogate mother.

Turkish doctors last year said they performed the first success-ful uterus transplant, giving a womb from a deceased donor to a young woman. Olausson said that woman is doing fine, but he wasn’t sure whether she has started fertil-ity treatment.

In 2000, doctors in Saudi Ara-bia transplanted a uterus from a live donor, but it had to be re-moved three months later because of a blood clot.

Olausson said there could be a lower risk of organ rejection when the donor is a family member, but he said a more important factor is the “emotional connection” between mother and daughter.

Also, the mother-daughter procedure makes it easier to “know that the transplanted organ

works,” he said, adding that it doesn’t matter whether the donor is past menopause.

For a year, doctors will moni-tor how the two patients respond to the anti-rejection drugs needed to stop their immune systems from attacking the donated wombs.

After a maximum of two preg-nancies, the wombs will be re-moved so the women can stop taking the drugs, which can have side effects such as high blood pressure, swelling and diabetes and may also raise the risk of some types of cancer.

“There’s no doubt this will be a pioneering step if it’s been suc-cessful,” said Scott Nelson, chair-man of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. “At present, the only option for these women is to have a surrogacy — i.e., having their embryos implanted into another woman.”

Nelson said a donated womb would not contain all the blood vessels it originally had, possibly compromising a baby’s develop-ment.

A Harvard historian has identified a faded, fourth-century scrap of papyrus she calls “The Gospel of Jesus’s Wife.” One line of the torn fragment of text purportedly reads: “Jesus said to them, ‘My wife …’” The following line states, “she will be able to be my disciple.”

The finding was announced to the public today (Sept. 18) by Karen King, a historian of early Christianity, author of several books about new Gospel discoveries and the Hollis professor of divinity at Harvard Divinity School. King first examined the privately owned fragment in 2011, and has since been studying it with the help of a small group of scholars.

According to the New York Times, King and her collaborators have concluded that the business card-size fragment is not a forgery, and she is presenting the discovery today at a meeting of International Congress of Coptic Studies in Rome.

The fragment, written in Coptic, the language of a group of early Christians in Egypt, has an unknown provenance, and its owner has opted to remain anonymous. Questions about the fragment abound, but scholars say it will nonetheless reignite several old debates: Was Jesus married? If so, was Mary Magdalene his wife? And did he have a female disciple? Scholars say these controversies date to the early centuries of Christianity, but they remain relevant today. In the Roman Catholic Church, for example, women and married men are barred from priesthood because of the model thought to have been set by Jesus.

King has cautioned that the new discovery should not be taken as proof that Jesus was actually married. The text appears to have been written centuries after he lived, and all other early Christian literature is silent on the question of his marital status.

But the scrap of papyrus — the first known statement from antiquity that refers to Jesus speaking of a wife — provides evidence that there was an active discussion among early Christians about whether Jesus was celibate or married, and which path his followers should choose, King told the Times.

The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act recently went into effect, which requires at least one serving of fruits or veggies on kids’ school lunch trays. But how do you get the kids to actually eat those veggies? Well, one way seems to be to simply jazz up what they’re called. For example, instead of carrots how about offering “X-ray vision carrots”? When researchers tried that in five New York elementary schools, kids ate twice as many of Bug Bunny’s favorite food.

A second experiment at two more schools dealt with broccoli and green beans—two deeply unpopular items. But when renamed to “Tiny Tasty Tree Tops” and “Silly Dilly Green Beans,” veggie consumption again doubled. Those results appear in the journal Preventive Medicine. But the cool names would need to be just one tool in the fight to influ-ence kids. Because even at the end of the study, only five percent of the kids were asking for broccoli or green beans—up from two percent before. Nevertheless, it’s a start. With a name like “Tiny Tasty Tree Tops,” maybe broccoli has a better chance at avoiding the “kooky, crazy junk container.” Ya know—the garbage can.

Gianyar - The Gianyar regency is preparing new regulations that will govern the way in which new hotels are built and ensure that ac-commodation projects are “green” and friendly to the environment. The regulations will also impact on existing properties in the regency that includes the popular Bali tourist destination of Ubud.

In announcing the new regulations, Beritabali.com quotes the re-gent of Gianyar, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati, as promising that his regency would become more selective in accepting new hotel investments.

“The essence is how to build green hotels; new hotels must follow the new rules. Existing hotels will need to follow these rules when re-newing their permits . . .we have begun to describe how to use energy, handle sewage – this will all be part of the permit issuance process,” explained Tjokorda.

Tjokorda said the new regulations would also include a larger role for the public in supervising hotel development in Gianyar.

Goa Lawah Temple is known as one of the Sad Kahyangan temples in Bali. The temple in-habited by thousands of fruit bats is a sanctum to venerate the Lord Maheshvara. BEIJING — U.S. Defense Secre-tary Leon Panetta told Chinese troops Wednesday that America’s new mili-tary focus on the Asia-Pacific region, including plans to put a second radar system in Japan, is not an attempt to contain or threaten China.

Delivering his message directly to the young Chinese officers and cadets coming up through the ranks, Panetta tried to put to rest fears that the U.S. move to add forces, ships and a missile defense system in the region is aimed at the communist giant.

Ever since the plan was unveiled by the Pentagon earlier this year, the U.S. military’s shift to the Pa-cific has fueled worries of increased tensions or conflict with China and its 2.3 million-member People’s Liberation Army. While the broad sentiments expressed in the speech were not new, Panetta laid out a more pointed argument that the

growing American presence in the region includes an effort to build a stronger relationship with Beijing.

“Our rebalance to the Asia-Pacific region is not an attempt to contain China. It is an attempt to engage China and expand its role in the Pacific,” Panetta said in a speech at the Engineering Academy of PLA Armored Forces. “It is about creat-ing a new model in the relationship of two Pacific powers.”

He acknowledged that improving relations and building trust will take time and that, “despite the distance, the distance that we have traveled over the past 40 years, it is clear that this journey is not yet complete, par-ticularly for our two militaries.”

Tensions between the U.S. and China have reverberated across the region, often focused on America’s support of Taiwan, which China regards as a break-away province and threatens to use force to block any Taiwanese bid for formal independence.

WONSAN, North Korea — First came an extended dry spell in the spring, followed by a summer of flash floods and typhoons. Now, with North Korean farmers preparing to head out into autumn fields to cut and thresh the nation’s most important crop, rice, there are renewed con-cerns that continued harsh weather will mean another shortfall of food in this chronically hungry land.

There had been high hopes for better crop yields this year following the implementation of more modern farming techniques, said Kang Su Ik,

a professor at North Korea’s premier agricultural school. But those hopes have faded in what has proven to be another tough year for farmers in the disaster-prone North.

“I can’t predict this year’s har-vest,” said Kang, head of the De-partment of Crop Science at the Wonsan University of Agriculture in eastern North Korea. “But it’s probable that this year’s output will be lower than expected.”

Agriculture remains the nation’s lifeblood, contributing a quarter of the nation’s economy and engaging a third of the population, according to the World Food Program.

But this craggy country of moun-tains and valleys has little arable land and for decades has not been able to grow enough food for its 24 million people. And in an era when most Northeast Asian nations leave most of the work to machines, northern farms still rely on back-breaking manual labor and have had to rely on foreign aid to make up for shortfalls in seeds and fertilizer.

The leanest period was a famine in the mid-1990s, a time known here as the “Arduous March,” when foreign economists estimate that hundreds of thousands of North Koreans died of hunger.

The use of tin or jerry can to transport the water because the tank truck could not reach the location of settlement. Though there had been a road body, it remained a narrow dirt road. In dry season, the dirt road was loose so the car could not pass because the tires skidded.

Wayan Putra who is also a farmer head group at Apadsari hamlet said the water in the pond at Batudawa Kaja had also dried up. As a result, residents faced water crisis. Meanwhile, the residents of Batudawa Kaja whose house was

close to the passable road by water tank truck purchased water at IDr 180,000 per tank, depending on the distance of services.

Wayan Putra expressed his grati-tude to Deputy regent of Karan-gasem, Made Sukerana, who had helped the people of Batudawa Kaja by donating a number of water tanks. As observation, other than at Bejug and Batudawa Kaja, the residents of Lebah Bongli, Tu-lamben village and most people on the mountainous ranges of Kubu subdistrict were also starting to face clean water crisis.

Then, residents at several ham-lets, Sebudi village, Selat subdis-trict also faced clean water crisis. Water in the ponds at Sogra, under Pasar Agung temple, at Sebudi vil-lage had long run out. Water seller usually came by truck bringing water in towers, where each tower contained 5,000 liters and was sold for IDr 180,000.

Meanwhile, the Headman of Seraya Barat, Wayan ripa, said that residents at Kalanganyar Kaler still faced clean water crisis and so did some residents of Kalang-anyar hamlet. “People who have motorcycle will take or purchase water. Similarly, there are people bringing jerry can and asked for water from the tap in my house. If relying on water from seepage or springs on Tabuan hill on the slope of Mount Lempuyang, its discharge is very small and should queue for several hours. The layoff notices were required under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining No-tification Act, which requires employees to be informed 60 days before major layoffs or plant closures. “The notices will look worse than the actual layoffs,” said Jamie Horwitz, a spokesman for the Transport Workers Union, which represents workers that received WARN Act notices.

Horwitz said about 800 employees had agreed to leave American voluntarily, a move that will further reduce the number of expected layoffs.

According to a letter sent by American to the Transport Workers Union, notices of potential layoff were sent to more than 3,000 workers in Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, where American is based; about 3,000 people in Tulsa, Oklahoma; just over 1,200 in Miami; nearly 1,000 in New York; about 900 in Chicago and lesser numbers in other U.S. cities.

In February, American outlined plans to cut as many as 14,000 jobs as it looks to streamline in bankruptcy. American Airlines,

the third-largest U.S. air carrier, filed for Chapter 11 protection in November, citing a need to decrease labor costs. The company has signed non-disclosure agreements with carriers including US Airways Group as it evaluates a potential merger.

US Airways won the backing of unions that represent American ramp workers, pilots and flight attendants earlier this year by promising to preserve thousands of jobs should a merger with American occur.

BRAUNSCHWEIG, Germany - A Ger-man regional court stopped two investor lawsuits against Porsche SE (PAH3.DE), sending a discouraging signal to claimants still seeking just over 4 billion euros ($5.2 billion) in damages in Germany. Presiding judge Stefan Puhle read out the decision at the court in the northern German city of Braunschweig on Wednesday without giv-ing reasons. The court is due to publish the reasoning for its decision at around 1100 CET (0900 GMT).

Some German and U.S. investors say that throughout 2008 Porsche camouflaged its plans to acquire VW and instead secretly piled up its holding. In March 2008, the sportscar maker dismissed as “speculation” talk that it intended to take over the much-bigger VW, which builds more cars in a week than Porsche does in a year.

Seven months later, Porsche said it controlled 42.6 percent of VW’s common shares and held options for another 31.5 percent of the stock it had not disclosed previously.

Porsche’s statement caused VW shares to surge to 1,005 euros within days, briefly making the Wolfsburg-based carmaker the world’s most valuable company as short-sellers raced to buy back stock they had borrowed to bet that VW shares would drop.

American Airlines said on Tuesday it has notified more than 11,000 workers they could lose their jobs as part of its bankruptcy reorganization, and said it was cutting flights by one to two percent for the rest of September and October. The U.S. carrier expects fewer than 40 percent of those it sent notices to, or 4,400 people, will actually be laid off in November and December, spokesman Bruce Hicks said.

A number of residents of Kukuh Village, Kerambitan, lately were unease due to a robbery case hitting SMA Negeri 1 Kerambitan High School was closed mysteriously. Locals questioned why the case ended oddly.

The incident happened on Friday (14/9) with victim Ni Kadek Yuli a pupil of the school who’s also the pupil’s organization’s member which the IDR 8 million cash that she brought on her bag had IDR 2 million of it missing during a gathering at the school’s field for a hair length checking. The bag was left in a room and it is suspected that the four people that did not get checked took it. It was stated the money was for a comparative study trip fund that will be used to pay which caused everyone in the school and pupils’ parent’s unease with the situation.

What’s weird the robbery ended peacefully where it came to a conclusion it was a teacher who robbed it and it didn’t come back fully (IDR 250,000 was still missing). PALM sugar (brown sugar) makers at Besan Village, Dawan, Klungkung, have difficulty to get raw materials or wine seepage of coconut tree. It happens because within the past few days, in Klungkung, particular at Besan, it always rains.

Actually, before Galungan and Kuningan the demand for brown sugar (also called Balinese sugar) increases. The price rises as well. During rainy season, sugar makers only acquire a small amount of wine. “Similarly, we do not dare to climb coconut trees, because it is slippery,” said sugar maker from Dawan, Nengah Koyog, at his home.

According to Koyog and his wife, Nengah Yasa, they would get much sap of coconut tree during dry season. Climbing the coconut tree was not too worrisome because the trunk was dry. On that account, every day the sugar maker could harvest wine for two times, in the morning and afternoon. However, during rainy season, they could only climb once. Even, it highly depended on the condition of coconut trees. In dry season, a tree could produce 2 liters of wine. “But, in rainy season it only produces a little, nearly 1 liter,” said Koyog.

However, the 65-year old man admitted if he no longer dared to climb because he was already old enough. Activity to slit into the bud of coconut tree for collecting its sap or wine had now been continued by his son, Nengah Sutarna. In normal condition, Koyog said, the wine obtained from nine coconut trees in his backyard reached up to 25 liters taken twice daily (morning and afternoon). Other than marketed in traditional markets across Klungkung, brown sugar produced by Besan Village was also sold to outside Klungkung such as Denpasar. MEXICO CITY — A big fire erupted at a natural gas pipeline distri-bution center near Mexico’s border with the United States on Tuesday, killing 26 people and forcing evacuations of people in nearby ranches and homes.

Mexico’s state-owned oil company, Petroleos Mexicanos, initially reported 10 deaths at the facility near the city of Reynosa, across from McAllen, Texas. Later, the death toll was raised to 26, according to the company’s Twitter account.

Pemex said in a statement that the fire had been extinguished and the pipeline was shut off. The pipeline carries natural gas from wells in the Burgos basin.

The company said through its Twitter account that four of those killed were Pemex employees and the rest were employed by contractors. It said officials were still investigating to determine the cause of the fire.

Civil protection officials said they evacuated ranches and homes within three miles (five kilometers) of the gas facility, which is about 12 miles (19 kilometers) southwest of Reynosa.

Jakarta - President Susilo Yud-hoyono is scheduled to speak at the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa. “The President will lead the Indonesian delegation to the annual meeting of the United Nations, which would be held at the UN headquarters in New York,” he said after a cabinet meeting here on Tuesday.

Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara - A total of 446 Indonesian boat crew members are still held in Australian prisons until this month for smuggling asylum seekers to that country, an ambassador said.

“Out of the number, 26 are chil-dren who are held in immigration detention cells and prisons across Australian states such as Victoria, Queensland and Tasmania,” Indone-sian ambassador to Australia Primo Alui Joelianto said at the Indonesia-Australia Joint Awareness Campaign on Anti-People Smuggling event here on Wednesday.

He said a total of 471 crew mem-bers meanwhile had been sent home to the country from 2008 to Septem-ber this year consisting of 230 adult and 142 child crew members who were freed after a judicial process and 61 children who were sent home without a judicial process.

He said “among the factors or mo-tives that drive them to get involved in the illegal activity is the pay, which is between Rp500,000 and Rp1 billion for carrying out the job which only takes three to five days to finish.”

Besides that he said there was also a pledge from their bosses that they could own the boats if they were able to carry out their job well.

Another factor is they were forced by their passengers to direct their boats to Australian waters while at sea, he said. “They also have been deceived by the passengers who asked to be taken to a certain place but when they were in the middle of the sea they then boarded a number of foreign passengers and asked them to take the foreigners to Australia,” he said.

Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg’s hopes of a step for-ward in form from Mercedes have been lifted with their team poised to race its new Coanda-effect exhausts at this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix, AUTOSPORT can reveal.

The Brackley-based outfit tested a heavily revised exhaust layout on its W03 during last week’s young driver test at Magny-Cours - mak-ing use of the concept that has been put to good use by a number of teams this year including Ferrari, McLaren and Sauber.

The developments completed more than 1000 kilometres during the three days of testing in the hands of Sam Bird and Brendon Hartley - and team sources suggest the outfit was hugely encouraged by the performance boost they brought to the car.

Mercedes now plans to fit the new exhaust layout to both Schu-macher and Rosberg’s cars in Friday practice in Singapore.

If the testing proves successful, then the team will commit to racing it on the Marina Bay circuit too.

Team principal Ross Brawn told AUTOSPORT last week that the benefits of the exhaust layout – which improves exhaust and airflow to the floor of the car – would be especially felt on the type of low

speed corners that are so common in Singapore.

“We think that’s quite significant in low speed traction,” he said about where the speed was improved with the Coanda exhausts.

“The effect of the exhaust is more significant at lower speeds than higher speeds, and also brings you the balance perhaps you need for the rear tyre.”

Brawn admitted at the Italian GP that the team had perhaps focused too much recently on understanding tyres, rather than bringing develop-ments like the Coanda exhaust, which had meant it falling behind its rivals.

Mercedes also trialled a Lotus-style of double DRS during the Mag-ny-Cours test too, but this is unlikely to be raced for a little while.

The team made significant prog-ress with it last week and it could trial it in some Friday practice ses-sions to perfect its set-up before electing to race with it.

Although the W03 also appeared with a shark fin on the engine cover for the final day at Magny-Cours, AUTOSPORT has learned that this was not a performance develop-ment aimed to be raced this year but is instead part of an FIA-backed programme to help improve driver identification for fans.

The Brackley-based outfit tested a heavily revised exhaust layout on its W03 during last week’s young driver test at Magny-Cours - mak-ing use of the concept that has been put to good use by a number of teams this year including Ferrari, McLaren and Sauber.

The developments completed more than 1000 kilometres during the three days of testing in the hands of Sam Bird and Brendon Hartley - and team sources suggest the outfit was hugely encouraged by the performance boost they brought to the car.

Mercedes now plans to fit the new exhaust layout to both Schu-macher and Rosberg’s cars in Friday practice in Singapore.

If the testing proves successful, then the team will commit to racing it on the Marina Bay circuit too.

Team principal Ross Brawn told AUTOSPORT last week that the benefits of the exhaust layout – which improves exhaust and airflow to the floor of the car – would be especially felt on the type of low

speed corners that are so common in Singapore.

“We think that’s quite significant in low speed traction,” he said about where the speed was improved with the Coanda exhausts.

“The effect of the exhaust is more significant at lower speeds than higher speeds, and also brings you the balance perhaps you need for the rear tyre.”

Brawn admitted at the Italian GP that the team had perhaps focused too much recently on understanding tyres, rather than bringing develop-ments like the Coanda exhaust, which had meant it falling behind its rivals.

Mercedes also trialled a Lotus-style of double DRS during the Mag-ny-Cours test too, but this is unlikely to be raced for a little while.

The team made significant prog-ress with it last week and it could trial it in some Friday practice ses-sions to perfect its set-up before electing to race with it.

Although the W03 also appeared with a shark fin on the engine cover for the final day at Magny-Cours, AUTOSPORT has learned that this was not a performance develop-ment aimed to be raced this year but is instead part of an FIA-backed programme to help improve driver identification for fans.

MEXICO CITY — A big fire erupted at a natural gas pipeline distri-bution center near Mexico’s border with the United States on Tuesday, killing 26 people and forcing evacuations of people in nearby ranches and homes.

Mexico’s state-owned oil company, Petroleos Mexicanos, initially reported 10 deaths at the facility near the city of Reynosa, across from McAllen, Texas. Later, the death toll was raised to 26, according to the company’s Twitter account.

Pemex said in a statement that the fire had been extinguished and the pipeline was shut off. The pipeline carries natural gas from wells in the Burgos basin.

The company said through its Twitter account that four of those killed were Pemex employees and the rest were employed by contractors. It said officials were still investigating to determine the cause of the fire.

Civil protection officials said they evacuated ranches and homes within three miles (five kilometers) of the gas facility, which is about 12 miles (19 kilometers) southwest of Reynosa.

Jakarta - President Susilo Yud-hoyono is scheduled to speak at the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa. “The President will lead the Indonesian delegation to the annual meeting of the United Nations, which would be held at the UN headquarters in New York,” he said after a cabinet meeting here on Tuesday.

“Indonesia has so far played an active role in the United Nations. In the next meeting, too, Indonesia is expected to contribute,” Marty added. President Yudhoyono will talk about the urgent need for the UN to step up efforts to resolve conflicts worldwide through proper diplomatic channels, he stated.

Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara - A total of 446 Indonesian boat crew members are still held in Australian prisons until this month for smuggling asylum seekers to that country, an ambassador said.

“Out of the number, 26 are chil-dren who are held in immigration detention cells and prisons across Australian states such as Victoria, Queensland and Tasmania,” Indone-sian ambassador to Australia Primo Alui Joelianto said at the Indonesia-Australia Joint Awareness Campaign on Anti-People Smuggling event here on Wednesday.

He said a total of 471 crew mem-bers meanwhile had been sent home to the country from 2008 to Septem-ber this year consisting of 230 adult and 142 child crew members who were freed after a judicial process and 61 children who were sent home without a judicial process.

He said “among the factors or mo-tives that drive them to get involved in the illegal activity is the pay, which is between Rp500,000 and Rp1 billion for carrying out the job which only takes three to five days to finish.”

Besides that he said there was also a pledge from their bosses that they could own the boats if they were able to carry out their job well.

Another factor is they were forced by their passengers to direct their boats to Australian waters while at sea, he said. “They also have been deceived by the passengers who asked to be taken to a certain place but when they were in the middle of the sea they then boarded a number of foreign passengers and asked them to take the foreigners to Australia,” he said.

Primo said some crew members had also been willing to take the asy-lum seekers to Australia because they lacked information that they could be sent to jails like illegal fish poachers

for one to two months for doing it. According to Article 233 A of the Aus-tralian immigration Law anyone car-rying non-Australian citizens into that country illegally may be sentenced up to 10 years in jail, he said.

The East Nusa Tenggara pro-vincial administration spokesman, Fransiskus Salem meanwhile said that people smuggling is not a new case but its number has increased in the past few decades in Asia with Australia as the destination.

He said what is concerning is that East Nusa Tenggara has been men-tioned as the most comfortable transit place because of its vicinity to the destination country. He said the two countries could not close their eyes on the fact because the activity violates their territorial integrity.

The layoff notices were required under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining No-tification Act, which requires employees to be informed 60 days before major layoffs or plant closures. “The notices will look worse than the actual layoffs,” said Jamie Horwitz, a spokesman for the Transport Workers Union, which represents workers that received WARN Act notices.

Horwitz said about 800 employees had agreed to leave American voluntarily, a move that will further reduce the number of expected layoffs.

Presiding judge Stefan Puhle read out the decision at the court in the northern German city of Braunschweig on Wednesday without giv-ing reasons. The court is due to publish the reasoning for its decision at around 1100 CET (0900 GMT).

Some German and U.S. investors say that throughout 2008 Porsche camouflaged its plans to acquire VW and instead secretly piled up its holding. In March 2008, the sportscar maker dismissed as “speculation” talk that it intended to take over the much-bigger VW, which builds more cars in a week than Porsche does in a year.

Seven months later, Porsche said it controlled 42.6 percent of VW’s common shares and held options for another 31.5 percent of the stock it had not disclosed previously.

American Airlines said on Tuesday it has notified more than 11,000 workers they could lose their jobs as part of its bankruptcy reorganization, and said it was cutting flights by one to two percent for the rest of September and October. PALM sugar (brown sugar) makers at Besan Village, Dawan, Klungkung, have difficulty to get raw materials or wine seepage of coconut tree. It happens because within the past few days, in Klungkung, particular at Besan, it always rains.

Actually, before Galungan and Kuningan the demand for brown sugar (also called Balinese sugar) increases. The price rises as well. During rainy season, sugar makers only acquire a small amount of wine. “Similarly, we do not dare to climb coconut trees, because it is slippery,” said sugar maker from Dawan, Nengah Koyog, at his home.

According to Koyog and his wife, Nengah Yasa, they would get much sap of coconut tree during dry season. Climbing the coconut tree was not too worrisome because the trunk was dry. On that account, every day the sugar maker could harvest wine for two times, in the morning and afternoon. However, during rainy season, they could only climb once. Even, it highly depended on the condition of coconut trees. In dry season, a tree could produce 2 liters of wine. “But, in rainy season it only produces a little, nearly 1 liter,” said Koyog.

However, the 65-year old man admitted if he no longer dared to climb because he was already old enough. Activity to slit into the bud of coconut tree for collecting its sap or wine had now been continued by his son, Nengah Sutarna. In normal condition, Koyog said, the wine obtained from nine coconut trees in his backyard reached up to 25 liters taken twice daily (morning and afternoon). BEIJING — U.S. Defense Secre-tary Leon Panetta told Chinese troops Wednesday that America’s new mili-tary focus on the Asia-Pacific region, including plans to put a second radar system in Japan, is not an attempt to contain or threaten China.

Delivering his message directly to the young Chinese officers and cadets coming up through the ranks, Panetta tried to put to rest fears that the U.S. move to add forces, ships and a missile defense system in the region is aimed at the communist giant.

Ever since the plan was unveiled by the Pentagon earlier this year, the U.S. military’s shift to the Pa-cific has fueled worries of increased tensions or conflict with China and its 2.3 million-member People’s Liberation Army. While the broad sentiments expressed in the speech were not new, Panetta laid out a more pointed argument that the

growing American presence in the region includes an effort to build a stronger relationship with Beijing.

“Our rebalance to the Asia-Pacific region is not an attempt to contain China. It is an attempt to engage China and expand its role in the Pacific,” Panetta said in a speech at the Engineering Academy of PLA Armored Forces. “It is about creat-ing a new model in the relationship of two Pacific powers.”

He acknowledged that improving relations and building trust will take time and that, “despite the distance, the distance that we have traveled over the past 40 years, it is clear that this journey is not yet complete, par-ticularly for our two militaries.”

Tensions between the U.S. and China have reverberated across the region, often focused on America’s support of Taiwan, which China regards as a break-away province and threatens to use force to block any Taiwanese bid for formal independence.

WONSAN, North Korea — First came an extended dry spell in the spring, followed by a summer of flash floods and typhoons. Now, with North Korean farmers preparing to head out into autumn fields to cut and thresh the nation’s most important crop, rice, there are renewed con-cerns that continued harsh weather will mean another shortfall of food in this chronically hungry land.

There had been high hopes for better crop yields this year following the implementation of more modern farming techniques, said Kang Su Ik,

a professor at North Korea’s premier agricultural school. But those hopes have faded in what has proven to be another tough year for farmers in the disaster-prone North.

“I can’t predict this year’s har-vest,” said Kang, head of the De-partment of Crop Science at the Wonsan University of Agriculture in eastern North Korea. “But it’s probable that this year’s output will be lower than expected.”

Agriculture remains the nation’s lifeblood, contributing a quarter of the nation’s economy and engaging a third of the population, according to the World Food Program.

But this craggy country of moun-tains and valleys has little arable land and for decades has not been able to grow enough food for its 24 million people. And in an era when most Northeast Asian nations leave most of the work to machines, northern farms still rely on back-breaking manual labor and have had to rely on foreign aid to make up for shortfalls in seeds and fertilizer.

The leanest period was a famine in the mid-1990s, a time known here as the “Arduous March,” when foreign economists estimate that hundreds of thousands of North Koreans died of hunger.

The use of tin or jerry can to transport the water because the tank truck could not reach the location of settlement. Though there had been a road body, it remained a narrow dirt road. In dry season, the dirt road was loose so the car could not pass because the tires skidded.

Wayan Putra who is also a farmer head group at Apadsari hamlet said the water in the pond at Batudawa Kaja had also dried up. As a result, residents faced water crisis. Meanwhile, the residents of Batudawa Kaja whose house was

close to the passable road by water tank truck purchased water at IDr 180,000 per tank, depending on the distance of services.

Wayan Putra expressed his grati-tude to Deputy regent of Karan-gasem, Made Sukerana, who had helped the people of Batudawa Kaja by donating a number of water tanks. As observation, other than at Bejug and Batudawa Kaja, the residents of Lebah Bongli, Tu-lamben village and most people on the mountainous ranges of Kubu subdistrict were also starting to face clean water crisis.

Then, residents at several ham-lets, Sebudi village, Selat subdis-trict also faced clean water crisis. Water in the ponds at Sogra, under Pasar Agung temple, at Sebudi vil-lage had long run out. Height of the water left was about 5 cm as seen at the corner floor of the pond, while at the other part only left thick mud. Besides, a number of water storage in the Pasar Agung temple had also dried up since last month because

it had never rained for about three months. Local temple priest said the residents at a number of hamlets of Sebudi village faced water crisis. For those who still had money and urgently needed water had alterna-tive by purchasing. Water seller usually came by truck bringing water in towers, where each tower contained 5,000 liters and was sold for IDr 180,000.

Meanwhile, the Headman of Seraya Barat, Wayan ripa, said that residents at Kalanganyar Kaler still faced clean water crisis and so did some residents of Kalang-anyar hamlet. “People who have motorcycle will take or purchase water. Similarly, there are people bringing jerry can and asked for water from the tap in my house. If relying on water from seepage or springs on Tabuan hill on the slope of Mount Lempuyang, its discharge is very small and should queue for several hours. Ultimately, the wa-ter obtained will maximally half a bucket,” said ripa. (013)

Specialists at the University of Goteborg said they performed the surgery over the weekend with-out complications but added that they won’t consider it successful unless the women give birth to healthy children.

“That’s the best proof,” said Michael Olausson, one of the surgeons.

One of the unidentified women had her uterus removed many years ago because of cervical cancer, while the other was born without a womb. Both are in their 30s.

They will undergo a year of ob-servation before doctors attempt to help them get pregnant via in vitro fertilization, in which em-bryos created with eggs from their own ovaries will be implanted in their wombs.

Researchers around the world have been looking for ways to transplant wombs so that women who have lost a uterus to cancer or other diseases can become pregnant.

Fertility experts hailed the Swedish transplants as a signifi-

cant step but stressed it remains to be seen whether they will result in successful pregnancies.

Even if the approach works, it is unclear how many women will choose such an option, given the risks and the extreme nature of the operation compared with, say, using a surrogate mother.

Turkish doctors last year said they performed the first success-ful uterus transplant, giving a womb from a deceased donor to a young woman. Olausson said that woman is doing fine, but he wasn’t sure whether she has started fertil-ity treatment.

In 2000, doctors in Saudi Ara-bia transplanted a uterus from a live donor, but it had to be re-moved three months later because of a blood clot.

Olausson said there could be a lower risk of organ rejection when the donor is a family member, but he said a more important factor is the “emotional connection” between mother and daughter.

Also, the mother-daughter procedure makes it easier to “know that the transplanted organ

works,” he said, adding that it doesn’t matter whether the donor is past menopause.

For a year, doctors will moni-tor how the two patients respond to the anti-rejection drugs needed to stop their immune systems from attacking the donated wombs.

After a maximum of two preg-nancies, the wombs will be re-moved so the women can stop taking the drugs, which can have side effects such as high blood pressure, swelling and diabetes and may also raise the risk of some types of cancer.

“There’s no doubt this will be a pioneering step if it’s been suc-cessful,” said Scott Nelson, chair-man of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. “At present, the only option for these women is to have a surrogacy — i.e., having their embryos implanted into another woman.”

Nelson said a donated womb would not contain all the blood vessels it originally had, possibly compromising a baby’s develop-ment.

A Harvard historian has identified a faded, fourth-century scrap of papyrus she calls “The Gospel of Jesus’s Wife.” One line of the torn fragment of text purportedly reads: “Jesus said to them, ‘My wife …’” The following line states, “she will be able to be my disciple.”

The finding was announced to the public today (Sept. 18) by Karen King, a historian of early Christianity, author of several books about new Gospel discoveries and the Hollis professor of divinity at Harvard Divinity School. King first examined the privately owned fragment in 2011, and has since been studying it with the help of a small group of scholars.

According to the New York Times, King and her collaborators have concluded that the business card-size fragment is not a forgery, and she is presenting the discovery today at a meeting of International Congress of Coptic Studies in Rome.

The fragment, written in Coptic, the language of a group of early Christians in Egypt, has an unknown provenance, and its owner has opted to remain anonymous. Questions about the fragment abound, but scholars say it will nonetheless reignite several old debates: Was Jesus married? If so, was Mary Magdalene his wife? And did he have a female disciple? Scholars say these controversies date to the early centuries of Christianity, but they remain relevant today. In the Roman Catholic Church, for example, women and married men are barred from priesthood because of the model thought to have been set by Jesus.

King has cautioned that the new discovery should not be taken as proof that Jesus was actually married. The text appears to have been written centuries after he lived, and all other early Christian literature is silent on the question of his marital status.

But the scrap of papyrus — the first known statement from antiquity that refers to Jesus speaking of a wife — provides evidence that there was an active discussion among early Christians about whether Jesus was celibate or married, and which path his followers should choose, King told the Times.

The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act recently went into effect, which requires at least one serving of fruits or veggies on kids’ school lunch trays. But how do you get the kids to actually eat those veggies? Well, one way seems to be to simply jazz up what they’re called. For example, instead of carrots how about offering “X-ray vision carrots”? When researchers tried that in five New York elementary schools, kids ate twice as many of Bug Bunny’s favorite food.

A second experiment at two more schools dealt with broccoli and green beans—two deeply unpopular items. But when renamed to “Tiny Tasty Tree Tops” and “Silly Dilly Green Beans,” veggie consumption again doubled. Those results appear in the journal Preventive Medicine. But the cool names would need to be just one tool in the fight to influ-ence kids. Because even at the end of the study, only five percent of the kids were asking for broccoli or green beans—up from two percent before. Nevertheless, it’s a start. With a name like “Tiny Tasty Tree Tops,” maybe broccoli has a better chance at avoiding the “kooky, crazy junk container.” Ya know—the garbage can.

Gianyar - The Gianyar regency is preparing new regulations that will govern the way in which new hotels are built and ensure that ac-commodation projects are “green” and friendly to the environment. The regulations will also impact on existing properties in the regency that includes the popular Bali tourist destination of Ubud.

In announcing the new regulations, Beritabali.com quotes the re-gent of Gianyar, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati, as promising that his regency would become more selective in accepting new hotel investments.

“The essence is how to build green hotels; new hotels must follow the new rules. Existing hotels will need to follow these rules when re-newing their permits . . .we have begun to describe how to use energy, handle sewage – this will all be part of the permit issuance process,” explained Tjokorda.

Tjokorda said the new regulations would also include a larger role for the public in supervising hotel development in Gianyar.

Chief of Pesinggahan custom-ary village, Dawan, Klungkung, Nyoman Suastika, said the pin-nacle of ritual took place around 1:00 p.m. local time and the worship was scheduled to last for three days. Ultimately, the closure of pedudusan alit ritual would be performed on Friday (Sep 21). Before pinnacle of the ritual on Tuesday, devotees paid devotional service in the temple by making preparations starting from the making of oblation cakes, erecting temporary platform and sanggar tawang shrine to initiating the pedudusan alit.

For the matter of security, his party made cooperation with Klungkung Police aside from de-

ploying the entire forces of peca-lang or customary security guard of Pesinggahan village. Suastika said that Klungkung Police deployed some 15 personnel to govern the traffic and secure the temple area.

Suastika added that from early morning the Hindus had started to come for saying prayers. Until the night, he estimated to reach ap-proximately 5,000 pilgrims both from Bali and outside Bali. Mean-while, to anticipate the overwhelm-ing pilgrims, the ritual committee had implemented an open-close system. Of the three main stages to reach the innermost courtyard, in each stage had been prepared A-H cards with a capacity of 600 pilgrims. “We provided the cards

in order those pilgrims could reach the innermost courtyard fluently without jostling,” he said.

Besides, to address the lack of parking spaces as in the previous ritual, the committee had also prepared a new parking lot in the east of the temple with a capacity of about one hundred cars.

Goa Lawah Temple is known as one of the Sad Kahyangan temples in Bali. The temple in-habited by thousands of fruit bats is a sanctum to venerate the Lord Maheshvara. Aside from pedudu-san alit, it will also be resumed with pedudusan agung in the next six months. Therefore, the Goa Lawah Temple holds two different rituals a year. (kmb31)

It was explained they will compile mahoganies seedlings to be planned in the dry area knowing that it got worse after the fire happening a while ago.

As the source of Bali, Mount Agung has to be protected and so a greening has to be done by the Balinese itself. The coordination will involve Vice Regent Tjokorde Gde Agung, after that a program will emerge and participations will be offered to those who want to help. Ac-cording to Muliarta, the best trees would be banyan trees yet it is hard to find it right now so mahoganies will be hopefully supported in supplying it by KTNA Klungkung as it is much easier to find. Meanwhile Agung promised that he will be involved in this movement and it is hoped with further coordination there will be a maximum Klungkung movement. EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Patong Beach-Phuket: Topping a long list of highlights in the four days of non-stop surfing and extreme sports action at the Quiksilver Open Phuket Thailand, Bali’s Mega Semadhi took out the ASC/ISC Open Division final yesterday for his first contest win this year, while reigning Men’s Asian Surfing Champion Raditya Rondi (also from Bali, Indonesia) hoisted his second consecutive ASC Championship trophy as a result of his second place finish behind Semadhi.

surfer’s move on every wave coming through in the afternoon sun, Mega jumped out to a com-manding lead, consistently launching and landing aerial maneuvers like he was on autopilot. Both Wilson and Rondi appeared to be feeling the pres-sure, with Wilson landing an aerial for a 4.5 point score with his first wave and then failing to find anything until near the end of the final, sitting in fourth place for most of the 25 minutes. Rondi struggled until midway through the heat, when he finally shook off the nerves and banged out a couple of scores to grab 3rd place. Made Darma-yasa meanwhile was sitting comfortably in 2nd spot, feeling no pressure and just having fun.

Amlapura (Bali Post) –Another food poisoning seemed to happen in Bali

this time at Rendang, Karangasem which three pupils of SDN 5 Pempatan Elementary and a resident victim-ized after eating a fried sausage sold by a walkabout seller in front of their school on Monday (17/9) and Tuesday (18/9). The four victims got the symptoms after 20 minutes eating it which then the seller escaped. Even though this seller have stayed there all this time, no one knew its name or address.

One resident poisoned, I Made Sumarjaya (21) explained to Bali Post that the pupil poisoned on Monday with her was Putu Astawa while the other two came the next day were sixth grade pupil Kadek Rudi Sapta Wardita (11) and fifth grade pupil I Gede Tapa (10). The worst infected was Kadek Rudi who got high fever, heartburn, headache, shivering and pale face. Teachers and pupils of the school were furious which then brought them to a Help Branch of Health Community Center nearby. All three victims got better and allowed to go home while Rudi was forwarded to Rendang Health Community Center. Doctor who treated, dr. Angga Wirayogi, stated they are being food poisoned yet it is not known if the poison comes from the sausage or the sauce which could be expired or mixed with poison. The competition held by the Buleleng Fishery and Maritime Affairs posed a significant event for fishermen in Bule-leng. Aside from relieving fatigue after catching fish for several days in the sea, they could also relax for a whole day last Tuesday by showing off their strength and agility in controlling the screen and responding the wind direction.

Uniquely, the fishermen also deco-rated their boats so as to look more beautiful. To decorate their boat, some of them were even willing to spend money from IDR 500,000 to IDR 2 million. The fund was used to paint the boat as well as repair screens and mast. “I’ve participated in this race for 61 times and never won. Nevertheless, I am happy

The Head of Buleleng Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, Heronimus Hue, said the race was originally held last August. Since it coincided with the celebration of the Eid, Galungan and Kuningan, the race was then postponed until Septem-ber. “The race should be organized last August in conjunction with the celebra-tion of the Indonesia’s Independence Day,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Regent Putu Agus Suradnyana who watched the race said that fishermen as coastal community relying on their livelihoods from the

sea was one of the maritime potentials that should be developed and preserved. Moreover, the government had now taken strategic measures to protect the fishery and maritime resources by pre-paring Strategic Plan for Coastal Area Management 2009-2027. “As a follow up of the strategic plan, we are prepar-ing a zoning plan for coastal territory management that will be discussed in the parliament,” he explained.

In the future, the regent expected the sailboat race could be made one of the Buleleng tourism agendas by organiz-ing it in July and August. “This kind of regatta should be attractively packaged to draw tourist visit and provide added value,” he hoped. (ole)
