Judges Carey, Minaj, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson and host Ryan Seacrest at-tended a press conference in New York on Monday after auditioning singers for the Fox music reality TV series.

Fox announced Sunday that Minaj and Urban would join Carey and Jackson as judges on “Idol” following Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler’s exits in July.

Carey tried to quell rumors about her quarreling with Minaj by saying they’ve only been together two days and “a feud takes a little longer to happen.”

All the judges burst into laughter.Minaj says the new “Idol” judges are “get-

ting along wonderfully, darling.” Minaj and Carey collaborated on a remix of Carey’s song “Up Out My Face” in 2010.

Carey confessed she’s “nev-er been a fan” of singing com-petition shows.

“I’ll be completely honest,” she said. “But I realize what this show has done for such talented artists and truly giving them careers.”

When asked why TV watchers should view “Idol” versus another Fox show, “X Factor,” which boasts Britney Spears and Demi Lovato as judges, Carey simply pointed her fingers to herself.

“Did I do that? I didn’t mean that as a final gesture,” she said with a smile. “I’m sorry.”

Then the 42-year-old multiple Grammy Award-winner said she wants to help those who dream of careers in music even if they don’t get to move on to the next round on the show.

“(What) I’m bringing to the table is years of experience, writing songs, performing,” she said.

NEW YORK — Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin and Liza Minnelli took turns singing songs by the late Marvin Hamlisch during a stirring memorial service for the composer on Tuesday.

Minnelli sang “If You Really Knew Me” from the musical “They’re Playing My Song,” Franklin gave a soulful rendi-tion of “Nobody Does It Better” from the James Bond film “The Spy Who Loved Me” and Streisand brought the crowd to its feet when she finished “The Way We Were” from the film of the same name. The composer’s wife of 26 years, Terre Hamlisch, welcomed the crowd.

“These are Marvin’s melodies,” she said. “Marvin Hamlisch lives in them. This is who Marvin Hamlisch was.”

Hamlisch composed or arranged hundreds of scores for musicals and movies, including “A Chorus Line” on Broadway and the films “The Sting,” ‘’Sophie’s Choice,” ‘’Ordinary People” and “The Way We Were.” He died on Aug. 6 in Los Angeles at age 68 after a short illness.

Streisand, who wore all black and sat on a stool, said she first met Ham-

lisch in 1963 when he was her rehearsal pianist in her breakout Broadway show, “Funny Girl.” He also was tasked with getting everyone coffee.

Since Streisand didn’t drink cof-fee, he would bring her chocolate doughnuts.

“He always brought me two, and so our love affair began,” Streisand said as the crowd laughed.

Their lives would intersect in per-sonal and professional ways over the years. She sang his “The Way We Were” to a Grammy Award win in 1974, and he played at her wedding in 1998.

Franklin, in a white suit, changed some of the lyrics to the sexy James Bond song “Nobody Does It Better,” to “Marvin, you were the best.” Ham-lisch had co-written the No. 1 R&B hit “Break It to Me Gently” with Carole Bayer Sager for Franklin.

Minnelli, in a beaded dress, said she met Hamlisch when she was 14 and he was 15 and they became friends immediately. He later arranged many of Minnelli’s albums, including her first two as well as “Judy Garland & Liza Minnelli ‘Live’ at the London Palladium.”

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

“I’m feeling so stoked right now,” said Se-madhi in his post-final interview. “Actually I’m so tired of getting second, finally I got a first! Pretty stoked, thanks to God, thanks to everyone, the judges and boys, my family and my fiancé. So stoked!”

Samadhi takes home a check for $1,700 USD plus Asian Surfing Championship and In-donesian Surfing Championship points that will contribute to his rankings in both circuits.

Ronda, who hails from Kura Beach in Bali, Indonesia was equally stoked with his second consecutive Asian Surfing Championship Men’s Open title, saying, “I’m was so proud to be the first Asian Surfing Champion and now to repeat that and win it again is an even bigger honor, I’m

Mega Semadhi Takes Quiksilver Open Phuket Thailand Win

Patong Beach-Phuket: Topping a long list of highlights in the four days of non-stop surfing and extreme sports action at the Quiksilver Open Phuket Thailand, Bali’s Mega Semadhi took out the ASC/ISC Open Division final yesterday for his first contest win this year, while reigning Men’s Asian Surfing Champion Raditya Rondi (also from Bali, Indonesia) hoisted his second consecutive ASC Championship trophy as a result of his second place finish behind Semadhi.

so thankful to my family and my sponsor and my friends for supporting me. Thanks also to the ASC for giving us this tour where we can surf and compete around Asia, and come to awesome places like here in Puget.”

It was a tense and exciting 25 minute Men’s Open final with a lot at stake, especially for Raditya Rondi and Lee Wilson, both in the race for the 2012 Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship title with one event remaining. If Wilson were to win the Quiksilver Open Phuket, he would win the 2012 Indonesian Champion-ship title, his 3rd. Anything less and the title wouldn’t be decided until next month at the final event in Kuta Beach, Bali, with runner up Rondi still smarting from being narrowly edged out by

Marlon Gerber last year. With the crowd on the beach glued to every

surfer’s move on every wave coming through in the afternoon sun, Mega jumped out to a com-manding lead, consistently launching and landing aerial maneuvers like he was on autopilot. Both Wilson and Rondi appeared to be feeling the pres-sure, with Wilson landing an aerial for a 4.5 point score with his first wave and then failing to find anything until near the end of the final, sitting in fourth place for most of the 25 minutes. Rondi struggled until midway through the heat, when he finally shook off the nerves and banged out a couple of scores to grab 3rd place. Made Darma-yasa meanwhile was sitting comfortably in 2nd spot, feeling no pressure and just having fun.

Quiksilver SEA CEO Paul Hutson was down on the beach watching the action close up, and couldn’t have been happier. “Can you believe all the drama in this final, it’s crazy,” he exclaimed. “The boys were absolutely ripping out there. Did you hear all the cheering up in the stands and on the beach? I have to say this is probably the most exciting final with one of the best crowds

I’ve seen in a long time. It’s been a super event for sure…we’ve had some weather challenges along the way but I think that just made it more fun in the end. We’ve seen great surfing with the best surfers in Asia here this week, great skate and BMX action from the Australian and Ameri-can DC teams, 5-time Women’s World Surfing Champion Stephanie Gilmore and amazing free surfer Ry Craike giving surf clinics and doing expression session….I can’t think of anything we’ve left out. Big thanks to Surached and his Quiksilver Thailand team, the sponsors, and the ASC/ISC crew for a super event. We’ve come a long way in four years since we sponsored our first event here in Thailand, and it just keeps getting better. Great job everyone!”

And it certainly was one of the most exciting as well as challenging events of the 2012 Asian Surfing Championship season, with a few major rain squalls threatening to blow apart the judg-ing tower on several occasions, but there were always waves and the surfers put on exciting and impressive performances over the four day event.

Amlapura (Bali Post) –Another food poisoning seemed to happen in Bali

this time at Rendang, Karangasem which three pupils of SDN 5 Pempatan Elementary and a resident victim-ized after eating a fried sausage sold by a walkabout seller in front of their school on Monday (17/9) and Tuesday (18/9). The four victims got the symptoms after 20 minutes eating it which then the seller escaped. Even though this seller have stayed there all this time, no one knew its name or address.

One resident poisoned, I Made Sumarjaya (21) explained to Bali Post that the pupil poisoned on Monday with her was Putu Astawa while the other two came the next day were sixth grade pupil Kadek Rudi Sapta Wardita (11) and fifth grade pupil I Gede Tapa (10). The worst infected was Kadek Rudi who got high fever, heartburn, headache, shivering and pale face. Teachers and pupils of the school were furious which then brought them to a Help Branch of Health Community Center nearby. All three victims got better and allowed to go home while Rudi was forwarded to Rendang Health Community Center. Doctor who treated, dr. Angga Wirayogi, stated they are being food poisoned yet it is not known if the poison comes from the sausage or the sauce which could be expired or mixed with poison. Meanwhile samples were taken from victim’s remaining food. (013)

The competition held by the Buleleng Fishery and Maritime Affairs posed a significant event for fishermen in Bule-leng. Aside from relieving fatigue after catching fish for several days in the sea, they could also relax for a whole day last Tuesday by showing off their strength and agility in controlling the screen and responding the wind direction.

Uniquely, the fishermen also deco-rated their boats so as to look more beautiful. To decorate their boat, some of them were even willing to spend money from IDR 500,000 to IDR 2 million. The fund was used to paint the boat as well as repair screens and mast. “I’ve participated in this race for 61 times and never won. Nevertheless, I am happy

because if getting lucky I can win a door prize,” said Jamaludin, one of the fishermen coalesced into the group of Bina Bahari Seririt.

The Head of Buleleng Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, Heronimus Hue, said the race was originally held last August. Since it coincided with the celebration of the Eid, Galungan and Kuningan, the race was then postponed until Septem-ber. “The race should be organized last August in conjunction with the celebra-tion of the Indonesia’s Independence Day,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Regent Putu Agus Suradnyana who watched the race said that fishermen as coastal community relying on their livelihoods from the

sea was one of the maritime potentials that should be developed and preserved. Moreover, the government had now taken strategic measures to protect the fishery and maritime resources by pre-paring Strategic Plan for Coastal Area Management 2009-2027. “As a follow up of the strategic plan, we are prepar-ing a zoning plan for coastal territory management that will be discussed in the parliament,” he explained.

In the future, the regent expected the sailboat race could be made one of the Buleleng tourism agendas by organiz-ing it in July and August. “This kind of regatta should be attractively packaged to draw tourist visit and provide added value,” he hoped. (ole)

Bangli (Bali Post) –The plan for Bangli Kidul Market reconstruction post

the fire incident seemed to have a lot of suggestions such as one of them by Bangli Representative member, I Wayan Sudiartana, last Tuesday (18/9) stating that regent should get a lend from Indonesia Finance Ministry so the construction can happen soon as if it’s step by step there will be complications and it couldn’t just depend on the Regency’s Budget and Expenses.

The market itself has been a barometer to the people’s economy and so it is highly demanded to be completely reconstructed soon. The Regency’s budget won’t be enough to complete it between 2 to 3 years and so an aid is needed therefore Regent has to coordinate with the Central Government under the Regional Regulations No. 54 Year 2006 on Regional Lend which can be done for economy stimulus. A reconstruction is very needed knowing the main building is totally broken, if it’s just refurbished it will put people to danger especially in earthquake. “The only way is to borrow from the Finance Ministry which the payback can be done every year until the Regent finished his time of duty. The market has been the biggest Regional Real Income for Bangli. There will be an open tender for its development with a better research on the market’s structure than before,” Sudiartana stated. Specialists at the University of Goteborg said they performed the surgery over the weekend with-out complications but added that they won’t consider it successful unless the women give birth to healthy children.

“That’s the best proof,” said Michael Olausson, one of the surgeons.

One of the unidentified women had her uterus removed many years ago because of cervical cancer, while the other was born without a womb. Both are in their 30s.

They will undergo a year of ob-servation before doctors attempt to help them get pregnant via in vitro fertilization, in which em-bryos created with eggs from their own ovaries will be implanted in their wombs.

Researchers around the world have been looking for ways to transplant wombs so that women who have lost a uterus to cancer or other diseases can become pregnant.

Fertility experts hailed the Swedish transplants as a signifi-

cant step but stressed it remains to be seen whether they will result in successful pregnancies.

Even if the approach works, it is unclear how many women will choose such an option, given the risks and the extreme nature of the operation compared with, say, using a surrogate mother.

Turkish doctors last year said they performed the first success-ful uterus transplant, giving a womb from a deceased donor to a young woman. Olausson said that woman is doing fine, but he wasn’t sure whether she has started fertil-ity treatment.

In 2000, doctors in Saudi Ara-bia transplanted a uterus from a live donor, but it had to be re-moved three months later because of a blood clot.

Olausson said there could be a lower risk of organ rejection when the donor is a family member, but he said a more important factor is the “emotional connection” between mother and daughter.

Also, the mother-daughter procedure makes it easier to “know that the transplanted organ

works,” he said, adding that it doesn’t matter whether the donor is past menopause.

For a year, doctors will moni-tor how the two patients respond to the anti-rejection drugs needed to stop their immune systems from attacking the donated wombs.

After a maximum of two preg-nancies, the wombs will be re-moved so the women can stop taking the drugs, which can have side effects such as high blood pressure, swelling and diabetes and may also raise the risk of some types of cancer.

“There’s no doubt this will be a pioneering step if it’s been suc-cessful,” said Scott Nelson, chair-man of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. “At present, the only option for these women is to have a surrogacy — i.e., having their embryos implanted into another woman.”

Nelson said a donated womb would not contain all the blood vessels it originally had, possibly compromising a baby’s develop-ment.

A Harvard historian has identified a faded, fourth-century scrap of papyrus she calls “The Gospel of Jesus’s Wife.” One line of the torn fragment of text purportedly reads: “Jesus said to them, ‘My wife …’” The following line states, “she will be able to be my disciple.”

The finding was announced to the public today (Sept. 18) by Karen King, a historian of early Christianity, author of several books about new Gospel discoveries and the Hollis professor of divinity at Harvard Divinity School. King first examined the privately owned fragment in 2011, and has since been studying it with the help of a small group of scholars.

According to the New York Times, King and her collaborators have concluded that the business card-size fragment is not a forgery, and she is presenting the discovery today at a meeting of International Congress of Coptic Studies in Rome.

The fragment, written in Coptic, the language of a group of early Christians in Egypt, has an unknown provenance, and its owner has opted to remain anonymous. Questions about the fragment abound, but scholars say it will nonetheless reignite several old debates: Was Jesus married? If so, was Mary Magdalene his wife? And did he have a female disciple? [Jesus Christ the Man: Does the Physical Evidence Hold Up?]

Scholars say these controversies date to the early centuries of Christianity, but they remain relevant today. In the Roman Catholic Church, for example, women and married men are barred from priesthood because of the model thought to have been set by Jesus.

King has cautioned that the new discovery should not be taken as proof that Jesus was actually married. The text appears to have been written centuries after he lived, and all other early Christian literature is silent on the question of his marital status.

But the scrap of papyrus — the first known statement from antiquity that refers to Jesus speaking of a wife — provides evidence that there was an active discussion among early Christians about whether Jesus was celibate or married, and which path his followers should choose, King told the Times.

The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act recently went into effect, which requires at least one serving of fruits or veggies on kids’ school lunch trays. But how do you get the kids to actually eat those veggies? Well, one way seems to be to simply jazz up what they’re called. For example, instead of carrots how about offering “X-ray vision carrots”? When researchers tried that in five New York elementary schools, kids ate twice as many of Bug Bunny’s favorite food.

A second experiment at two more schools dealt with broccoli and green beans—two deeply unpopular items. But when renamed to “Tiny Tasty Tree Tops” and “Silly Dilly Green Beans,” veggie consumption again doubled. Those results appear in the journal Preventive Medicine. [Brian Wansink et al, Attractive names sustain increased vegetable intake in schools]

But the cool names would need to be just one tool in the fight to influ-ence kids. Because even at the end of the study, only five percent of the kids were asking for broccoli or green beans—up from two percent before. Nevertheless, it’s a start. With a name like “Tiny Tasty Tree Tops,” maybe broccoli has a better chance at avoiding the “kooky, crazy junk container.” Ya know—the garbage can.

Gianyar - The Gianyar regency is preparing new regulations that will govern the way in which new hotels are built and ensure that ac-commodation projects are “green” and friendly to the environment. The regulations will also impact on existing properties in the regency that includes the popular Bali tourist destination of Ubud.

In announcing the new regulations, Beritabali.com quotes the re-gent of Gianyar, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati, as promising that his regency would become more selective in accepting new hotel investments.

“The essence is how to build green hotels; new hotels must follow the new rules. Existing hotels will need to follow these rules when re-newing their permits . . .we have begun to describe how to use energy, handle sewage – this will all be part of the permit issuance process,” explained Tjokorda.

Tjokorda said the new regulations would also include a larger role for the public in supervising hotel development in Gianyar.

Chief of Pesinggahan custom-ary village, Dawan, Klungkung, Nyoman Suastika, said the pin-nacle of ritual took place around 1:00 p.m. local time and the worship was scheduled to last for three days. Ultimately, the closure of pedudusan alit ritual would be performed on Friday (Sep 21). Before pinnacle of the ritual on Tuesday, devotees paid devotional service in the temple by making preparations starting from the making of oblation cakes, erecting temporary platform and sanggar tawang shrine to initiating the pedudusan alit.

For the matter of security, his party made cooperation with Klungkung Police aside from de-

ploying the entire forces of peca-lang or customary security guard of Pesinggahan village. Suastika said that Klungkung Police deployed some 15 personnel to govern the traffic and secure the temple area.

Suastika added that from early morning the Hindus had started to come for saying prayers. Until the night, he estimated to reach ap-proximately 5,000 pilgrims both from Bali and outside Bali. Mean-while, to anticipate the overwhelm-ing pilgrims, the ritual committee had implemented an open-close system. Of the three main stages to reach the innermost courtyard, in each stage had been prepared A-H cards with a capacity of 600 pilgrims. “We provided the cards

in order those pilgrims could reach the innermost courtyard fluently without jostling,” he said.

Besides, to address the lack of parking spaces as in the previous ritual, the committee had also prepared a new parking lot in the east of the temple with a capacity of about one hundred cars.

Goa Lawah Temple is known as one of the Sad Kahyangan temples in Bali. The temple in-habited by thousands of fruit bats is a sanctum to venerate the Lord Maheshvara. Aside from pedudu-san alit, it will also be resumed with pedudusan agung in the next six months. Therefore, the Goa Lawah Temple holds two different rituals a year. (kmb31)

Semarapura (Bali Post) –Klungkung Government through its Agriculture, Forestry and Plan-

tation Agency plans to join the movement in preserving Mount Agung by brining KTNA of Klungkung Regency as stated by its Agency Head, Wayan Muliarta, last Tuesday (18/9). It was explained they will compile mahoganies seedlings to be planned in the dry area knowing that it got worse after the fire happening a while ago.

As the source of Bali, Mount Agung has to be protected and so a greening has to be done by the Balinese itself. The coordination will involve Vice Regent Tjokorde Gde Agung, after that a program will emerge and participations will be offered to those who want to help. Ac-cording to Muliarta, the best trees would be banyan trees yet it is hard to find it right now so mahoganies will be hopefully supported in supplying it by KTNA Klungkung as it is much easier to find. Meanwhile Agung promised that he will be involved in this movement and it is hoped with further coordination there will be a maximum Klungkung movement. At this time there is a Peda activity which Klungkung is a host but this movement will be coordinated as soon as possible. (kmb31)

The State Department said in a statement Wednesday that Ambas-sador Gary Locke was unhurt in Tuesday’s incident, and that diplo-mats have expressed concerns to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

The statement said around 50 protesters surrounded Locke’s car as he tried to enter the embassy and were eventually removed by

Chinese security personnel. The incident comes amid height-

ened vigilance for American diplomats following violent attacks on U.S. embassies in Libya, Yemen and Egypt. The statement said embassy officials have asked the Chinese government to do everything possible to protect American facilities and personnel.

People across China have engaged

in days of furious protests over some East China Sea islands, claimed by Beijing and Tokyo, that Japan pur-chased last week from a private owner. The U.S., a close ally of Japan, has said it is staying out of the dispute, but it also been the target of Chinese anger.

On Tuesday the dispute mixed with remembrances of a 1931 in-cident that Japan used as a pretext to invade Manchuria, setting off a brutal occupation of China that ended only at the close of World War II. China marks every Sept. 18 by blowing sirens, but demonstra-tions such as those seen Tuesday are not routine.

BEIJING — U.S. Defense Secre-tary Leon Panetta told Chinese troops Wednesday that America’s new mili-tary focus on the Asia-Pacific region, including plans to put a second radar system in Japan, is not an attempt to contain or threaten China.

Delivering his message directly to the young Chinese officers and cadets coming up through the ranks, Panetta tried to put to rest fears that the U.S. move to add forces, ships and a missile defense system in the region is aimed at the communist giant.

Ever since the plan was unveiled by the Pentagon earlier this year, the U.S. military’s shift to the Pa-cific has fueled worries of increased tensions or conflict with China and its 2.3 million-member People’s Liberation Army. While the broad sentiments expressed in the speech were not new, Panetta laid out a more pointed argument that the

growing American presence in the region includes an effort to build a stronger relationship with Beijing.

“Our rebalance to the Asia-Pacific region is not an attempt to contain China. It is an attempt to engage China and expand its role in the Pacific,” Panetta said in a speech at the Engineering Academy of PLA Armored Forces. “It is about creat-ing a new model in the relationship of two Pacific powers.”

He acknowledged that improving relations and building trust will take time and that, “despite the distance, the distance that we have traveled over the past 40 years, it is clear that this journey is not yet complete, par-ticularly for our two militaries.”

Tensions between the U.S. and China have reverberated across the region, often focused on America’s support of Taiwan, which China regards as a break-away province and threatens to use force to block any Taiwanese bid for formal independence.

WONSAN, North Korea — First came an extended dry spell in the spring, followed by a summer of flash floods and typhoons. Now, with North Korean farmers preparing to head out into autumn fields to cut and thresh the nation’s most important crop, rice, there are renewed con-cerns that continued harsh weather will mean another shortfall of food in this chronically hungry land.

There had been high hopes for better crop yields this year following the implementation of more modern farming techniques, said Kang Su Ik,

a professor at North Korea’s premier agricultural school. But those hopes have faded in what has proven to be another tough year for farmers in the disaster-prone North.

“I can’t predict this year’s har-vest,” said Kang, head of the De-partment of Crop Science at the Wonsan University of Agriculture in eastern North Korea. “But it’s probable that this year’s output will be lower than expected.”

Agriculture remains the nation’s lifeblood, contributing a quarter of the nation’s economy and engaging a third of the population, according to the World Food Program.

But this craggy country of moun-tains and valleys has little arable land and for decades has not been able to grow enough food for its 24 million people. And in an era when most Northeast Asian nations leave most of the work to machines, northern farms still rely on back-breaking manual labor and have had to rely on foreign aid to make up for shortfalls in seeds and fertilizer.

The leanest period was a famine in the mid-1990s, a time known here as the “Arduous March,” when foreign economists estimate that hundreds of thousands of North Koreans died of hunger.

DENPASAr - Bali con-tinues to make a substantial contribution to the over-all Indonesian economy. 2011 figures show that Bali contributed rp. 42 trillion (US$4.4 billion) in income comprised of rp. 32 trillion (US$3.4 billion) in foreign exchange from international tourists and the remaining rp. 9 trillion from domestic tourism.

The head of tourism for the province of Bali, Ida Bagus Subhiksu, said tour-ism revenues are up 10% compared to the previous year.

The development of tour-ism in Bali is also affecting the wheel of economics in the island.

Many of the people in Bali depend on the income from tourism for the life.

A legislator of Karangasem House, I Nyoman Sadra, said on Tuesday (Sep 18) that his party was visited by a number of people from the village becoming the battlefield of the troops of Ngurah rai in 1946, namely Tanah Aron perching at the southern slopes of Mount Agung. Tanah Aron residents who had mon-ey, said Sadra, purchased a tower of water containing about 5,000 liters at IDr 175,000. “We at Tenganan with dense forests throughout the hill ranges have springs with small discharge, let alone at another village. Many of my flowers and bonsais died. We find difficulty to get water for showering, let alone for watering plants,” he said.

residents of Tanah Aron faced water crisis because the supply in the water storage had dried up.

While the large pond built through a government project at Nangka hamlet, namely the adjacent hamlet, could not be enjoyed by the Tanah Aron residents. Water in the pond at Nangka hamlet had long dried and could only be enjoyed by 70 families of totally 240 residents of Nangka hamlet.

“I’ve revealed the matter in the hearing with the Head of Social Agency last week. During dry sea-son right now many residents face water crisis. Hopefully, the author-ity prepares water tankers to sup-ply the residents urgently needing the clean water. The existing tank truck like the one assisted by the PNPM or other assistance, should be recorded and well managed. I think there has been a number of assistance of water tank trucks,”

said Sadra.Meanwhile, a community leader

of Apadsari hamlet, Batudawa Kaja, Tulamben, I Wayan Putra, also said on Tuesday that his residents had faced water crisis since a few weeks ago. The most severe crisis was at Bejug hamlet. The rainwater supplies in the storage of residents had run out due to long drought. Then, he said, Bejug residents who still had money purchased the water at IDr 2,000/tin. The use of tin or jerry can to transport the water because the tank truck could not reach the location of settlement. Though there had been a road body, it remained a narrow dirt road. In dry season, the dirt road was loose so the car could not pass because the tires skidded.

Wayan Putra who is also a farmer head group at Apadsari hamlet said the water in the pond at Batudawa Kaja had also dried up. As a result, residents faced water crisis. Meanwhile, the residents of Batudawa Kaja whose house was

close to the passable road by water tank truck purchased water at IDr 180,000 per tank, depending on the distance of services.

Wayan Putra expressed his grati-tude to Deputy regent of Karan-gasem, Made Sukerana, who had helped the people of Batudawa Kaja by donating a number of water tanks. As observation, other than at Bejug and Batudawa Kaja, the residents of Lebah Bongli, Tu-lamben village and most people on the mountainous ranges of Kubu subdistrict were also starting to face clean water crisis.

Then, residents at several ham-lets, Sebudi village, Selat subdis-trict also faced clean water crisis. Water in the ponds at Sogra, under Pasar Agung temple, at Sebudi vil-lage had long run out. Height of the water left was about 5 cm as seen at the corner floor of the pond, while at the other part only left thick mud. Besides, a number of water storage in the Pasar Agung temple had also dried up since last month because

it had never rained for about three months. Local temple priest said the residents at a number of hamlets of Sebudi village faced water crisis. For those who still had money and urgently needed water had alterna-tive by purchasing. Water seller usually came by truck bringing water in towers, where each tower contained 5,000 liters and was sold for IDr 180,000.

Meanwhile, the Headman of Seraya Barat, Wayan ripa, said that residents at Kalanganyar Kaler still faced clean water crisis and so did some residents of Kalang-anyar hamlet. “People who have motorcycle will take or purchase water. Similarly, there are people bringing jerry can and asked for water from the tap in my house. If relying on water from seepage or springs on Tabuan hill on the slope of Mount Lempuyang, its discharge is very small and should queue for several hours. Ultimately, the wa-ter obtained will maximally half a bucket,” said ripa. (013)

The layoff notices were required under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining No-tification Act, which requires employees to be informed 60 days before major layoffs or plant closures. “The notices will look worse than the actual layoffs,” said Jamie Horwitz, a spokesman for the Transport Workers Union, which represents workers that received WARN Act notices.

Horwitz said about 800 employees had agreed to leave American voluntarily, a move that will further reduce the number of expected layoffs.

According to a letter sent by American to the Transport Workers Union, notices of potential layoff were sent to more than 3,000 workers in Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, where American is based; about 3,000 people in Tulsa, Oklahoma; just over 1,200 in Miami; nearly 1,000 in New York; about 900 in Chicago and lesser numbers in other U.S. cities.

In February, American outlined plans to cut as many as 14,000 jobs as it looks to streamline in bankruptcy. American Airlines,

the third-largest U.S. air carrier, filed for Chapter 11 protection in November, citing a need to decrease labor costs. The company has signed non-disclosure agreements with carriers including US Airways Group as it evaluates a potential merger.

US Airways won the backing of unions that represent American ramp workers, pilots and flight attendants earlier this year by promising to preserve thousands of jobs should a merger with American occur.

RISE IN CANCELLATIONSAmerican’s flight cuts for September and

October were set partly due to an increase in pilot sick days and greater maintenance reports by flight crews led to cancellations and delays, Hicks said. American operates about 1,700 flights a day.

Last week, the unit of AMR Corp (AAMRQ.PK) began implementing cost cuts for its unionized pilots after gaining bankruptcy court approval to abandon its collective bargaining agreement with the Allied Pilots Association.

BRAUNSCHWEIG, Germany - A Ger-man regional court stopped two investor lawsuits against Porsche SE (PAH3.DE), sending a discouraging signal to claimants still seeking just over 4 billion euros ($5.2 billion) in damages in Germany. Presiding judge Stefan Puhle read out the decision at the court in the northern German city of Braunschweig on Wednesday without giv-ing reasons. The court is due to publish the reasoning for its decision at around 1100 CET (0900 GMT).

Some German and U.S. investors say that throughout 2008 Porsche camouflaged its plans to acquire VW and instead secretly piled up its holding. In March 2008, the sportscar maker dismissed as “speculation” talk that it intended to take over the much-bigger VW, which builds more cars in a week than Porsche does in a year.

Seven months later, Porsche said it controlled 42.6 percent of VW’s common shares and held options for another 31.5 percent of the stock it had not disclosed previously.

Porsche’s statement caused VW shares to surge to 1,005 euros within days, briefly making the Wolfsburg-based carmaker the world’s most valuable company as short-sellers raced to buy back stock they had borrowed to bet that VW shares would drop.

Swiss investment company My Cap-ital-MC and a German private investor, champions of the two failed lawsuits, had sought compensation for 4.7 million euros of losses from short-selling VW shares.

Porsche spokesman Albrecht Bamler welcomed the court’s decision, saying the Stuttgart-based company would fight the three outstanding lawsuits “with all rigor.”

Tabanan (Bali Post) –

A number of residents of Kukuh Village, Kerambitan, lately were unease due to a robbery case hitting SMA Negeri 1 Kerambitan High School was closed mysteriously. Locals questioned why the case ended oddly.

The incident happened on Friday (14/9) with victim Ni Kadek Yuli a pupil of the school who’s also the pupil’s organization’s member which the IDR 8 million cash that she brought on her bag had IDR 2 million of it missing during a gathering at the school’s field for a hair length checking. The bag was left in a room and it is suspected that the four people that did not get checked took it. It was stated the money was for a comparative study trip fund that will be used to pay which caused everyone in the school and pupils’ parent’s unease with the situation.

What’s weird the robbery ended peacefully where it came to a conclusion it was a teacher who robbed it and it didn’t come back fully (IDR 250,000 was still missing). Kukuh Village Secretary, Made Buda Artha, last Tuesday (18/9) stated the unease was heard from mouth to mouth and it is suspected that if there are no sanctions given to the robber then it would do it again. The same was stated by Banjar Kukuh Kangin Leader, Putu Budi Artana, moreover the girl who brought the money was suspected to be the robber and that this robbery case did not only happen once even though the amount of money was not as much. Meanwhile the pupil’s representative, Ketut Mulyana, clarified that the case has been ended internally in keeping the credibility and psychology of the pupils for that when someone gave back the money the case was stopped and that this giving back act is the sanction of the case. The school itself has its own efforts in stopping such thing happening again and to solve problems in a family way. “What’s important the money is given back and we focus to the pupils’ education,” Mulyana explained. PALM sugar (brown sugar) makers at Besan Village, Dawan, Klungkung, have difficulty to get raw materials or wine seepage of coconut tree. It happens because within the past few days, in Klungkung, particular at Besan, it always rains.

Actually, before Galungan and Kuningan the demand for brown sugar (also called Balinese sugar) increases. The price rises as well. During rainy season, sugar makers only acquire a small amount of wine. “Similarly, we do not dare to climb coconut trees, because it is slippery,” said sugar maker from Dawan, Nengah Koyog, at his home.

According to Koyog and his wife, Nengah Yasa, they would get much sap of coconut tree during dry season. Climbing the coconut tree was not too worrisome because the trunk was dry. On that account, every day the sugar maker could harvest wine for two times, in the morning and afternoon. However, during rainy season, they could only climb once. Even, it highly depended on the condition of coconut trees. In dry season, a tree could produce 2 liters of wine. “But, in rainy season it only produces a little, nearly 1 liter,” said Koyog.

However, the 65-year old man admitted if he no longer dared to climb because he was already old enough. Activity to slit into the bud of coconut tree for collecting its sap or wine had now been continued by his son, Nengah Sutarna. In normal condition, Koyog said, the wine obtained from nine coconut trees in his backyard reached up to 25 liters taken twice daily (morning and afternoon). Results of the wine seepage were directly boiled and could produce 4 kilogram of brown sugar. “Before Galungan and Kuningan, the price is rising. If previously was only IDR 13,000 per kilogram, now it reaches IDR 15,000 per kilogram,” said Koyog who also collected sugar product of the surrounding residents.

Other than marketed in traditional markets across Klungkung, brown sugar produced by Besan Village was also sold to outside Klungkung such as Denpasar. Unfortunately, due to difficulty to get raw materials, this sweet sugar was tasted ‘bitter’ by the sugar makers. “I myself have a regular customer from Renon. In once delivery, it can reach hundreds of kilogram,” he said.

The injunction granted to the Duke and the Duchess of Cam-bridge, as the couple are formally known, also prevents France’s Closer magazine from selling the pictures to other media.

The court in Nanterre, near Paris, earlier opened a criminal investigation into charges that the photographer who took the shots and Closer breached the privacy of the prince and his wife.

“The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcome the judge’s ruling,” a spokeswoman for the royal couple said.

Closer will be fined 10,000 euros $13,100 (8,065 pounds) per day of delay in handing over the images, the court said in the civil ruling. The couple are also seek-ing damages from the weekly over its publication of the photographs in a five-page spread on Friday.

The pictures were taken while the couple were on holiday in a chateau in southern France and show the duchess slipping off her bikini top, relaxing on a sun lounger and at one point pulling down the back of her bikini bot-toms.

Buckingham Palace has called the photo spread a “grotesque” invasion of the couple’s privacy. The royal family want to make an example of Closer.

The pictures have rekindled memories in Britain of the me-dia pursuit of William’s mother, Princess Diana, who was killed in a car crash in Paris in 1997 while being chased by paparazzi.

British newspapers, fighting for their reputation after a string of scandals, have agreed not to publish the images, as has the British edition of Closer, which

is managed separately. The Sun tabloid screamed:

“Find Le Rat” on its front page on Tuesday and said the pho-tographer would be found and face jail.

The court said police would investigate whether there were grounds for criminal charges against Closer and its publisher, Italy’s Mondadori, and the pho-tographer.

On Monday, the publisher of tabloid The Irish Daily Star sus-pended its editor after the news-paper broke ranks with Irish and British peers, publishing pages from Closer with the photographs in its Saturday edition.

Italian gossip magazine Chi, also published by Mondadori, printed a 26-page special edi-tion dedicated to the pictures on Monday.

MEXICO CITY — A big fire erupted at a natural gas pipeline distri-bution center near Mexico’s border with the United States on Tuesday, killing 26 people and forcing evacuations of people in nearby ranches and homes.

Mexico’s state-owned oil company, Petroleos Mexicanos, initially reported 10 deaths at the facility near the city of Reynosa, across from McAllen, Texas. Later, the death toll was raised to 26, according to the company’s Twitter account.

Pemex said in a statement that the fire had been extinguished and the pipeline was shut off. The pipeline carries natural gas from wells in the Burgos basin.

The company said through its Twitter account that four of those killed were Pemex employees and the rest were employed by contractors. It said officials were still investigating to determine the cause of the fire.

Civil protection officials said they evacuated ranches and homes within three miles (five kilometers) of the gas facility, which is about 12 miles (19 kilometers) southwest of Reynosa.

Gita said the new agreement is to forestall possible shortage in the country`s rice stocks considering condition in the world rice market and prices. The agree-ment will provide alternative source of rice supply to support the country`s food security , he said.

Similar agreements have been signed by Indonesia with other major rice producing countries in ASEAN including Cambodia and Thailand, he said.

Indonesia , therefore, will not depend on one country in the event of imports being needed, he said, adding “we would not be dictated in prices.”

He said imports may be needed as a last resort to maintain price stability on the domestic market. He said Indonesia`s trade with Vietnam has continued to increase growing by 18 percent over the period of 2007-2011. In the last three years the trade volume grew significantly from US$2.11 billion in 2009 to US$4.7 billion in 2011.

Jakarta - President Susilo Yud-hoyono is scheduled to speak at the annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York next week, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa. “The President will lead the Indonesian delegation to the annual meeting of the United Nations, which would be held at the UN headquarters in New York,” he said after a cabinet meeting here on Tuesday.

“Indonesia has so far played an active role in the United Nations. In the next meeting, too, Indonesia is expected to contribute,” Marty added. President Yudhoyono will talk about the urgent need for the UN to step up efforts to resolve conflicts worldwide through proper diplomatic channels, he stated.

Besides attending the UN ses-sion, the President is also scheduled to attend a meeting that will discuss

post-2015 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). He will co-chair the meeting with David Cameron and Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.“Together, they will begin a process to build a new international framework for development which will become operational after the cur-rent MDGs expire in 2015. The pro-cess involves preparation of reports, which are expected to be ready by May 2013,” Marty said.

President Yudhoyono will hold meetings with the Egyptian president, the UN general assembly president, the UN secretary general, the Norwegian prime minister and a number of leaders from other countries as well.

“The President will also attend some promotional events relating to investment in Indonesia, along with an investment forum at the New York Stock Exchange. He will be recogn-ised for his contribution to the envi-ronment, economy and international peace,” Marty stated.

He said TNI has fielded 2,200 per-

Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara - A total of 446 Indonesian boat crew members are still held in Australian prisons until this month for smuggling asylum seekers to that country, an ambassador said.

“Out of the number, 26 are chil-dren who are held in immigration detention cells and prisons across Australian states such as Victoria, Queensland and Tasmania,” Indone-sian ambassador to Australia Primo Alui Joelianto said at the Indonesia-Australia Joint Awareness Campaign on Anti-People Smuggling event here on Wednesday.

He said a total of 471 crew mem-bers meanwhile had been sent home to the country from 2008 to Septem-ber this year consisting of 230 adult and 142 child crew members who were freed after a judicial process and 61 children who were sent home without a judicial process.

He said “among the factors or mo-tives that drive them to get involved in the illegal activity is the pay, which is between Rp500,000 and Rp1 billion for carrying out the job which only takes three to five days to finish.”

Besides that he said there was also a pledge from their bosses that they could own the boats if they were able to carry out their job well.

Another factor is they were forced by their passengers to direct their boats to Australian waters while at sea, he said. “They also have been deceived by the passengers who asked to be taken to a certain place but when they were in the middle of the sea they then boarded a number of foreign passengers and asked them to take the foreigners to Australia,” he said.

Primo said some crew members had also been willing to take the asy-lum seekers to Australia because they lacked information that they could be sent to jails like illegal fish poachers

for one to two months for doing it. According to Article 233 A of the Aus-tralian immigration Law anyone car-rying non-Australian citizens into that country illegally may be sentenced up to 10 years in jail, he said.

The East Nusa Tenggara pro-vincial administration spokesman, Fransiskus Salem meanwhile said that people smuggling is not a new case but its number has increased in the past few decades in Asia with Australia as the destination.

He said what is concerning is that East Nusa Tenggara has been men-tioned as the most comfortable transit place because of its vicinity to the destination country. He said the two countries could not close their eyes on the fact because the activity violates their territorial integrity.

To prevent the activity to continue further he said efforts must be made to create stability and economic growth in the countries of origin of the illegal immigrants.

“We all know that almost half of the business landscapes are owned by outsiders or do not belong to local people. By all means, what they produce is then taken out of Bali,” he said.

Government of Indonesia, especially Bali, said Noer Said, should emulate a number of countries that required the large businesses to use the products and services yielded by small businesses. Among other things, the automobile manufacturers took advantage of spare parts made by cottage industry.

“This will make all parties survive. Indonesia should ideally have a philosophy of mutual assistance being capable of designing the economic climate where big business does not overcome the small businesses and the small businesses do not disturb the large ones,” he said.

Representative of Bank Indonesia for Region III Bali-Nusra estimated that positive development of Bali’s economy would continue to run. Eco-nomic growth in the third quarter of 2012 was estimated to perch at 6.5 percent (yoy) or slightly above it. The achievement was supported by strong growth both in public and private investment as well as the optimism on the increased public consumption as indicated by the Consumer Expectation Index (IEK). Calling for a U.N. treaty against insulting religion, he added: “We con-demn violence and say that peaceful protests are a right for everyone. I hope there will be a popular western and French reaction condemning this.”

DEADLY PROTESTSThe posting of a short film on You Tube last week that mocked Moham-

mad as a lecherous fool has sparked sometimes deadly protests in many countries.

The U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed in an attack in Benghazi, and U.S. and other foreign embassies were stormed in cities in Asia, Africa and the Middle East by furious Muslims. Afghan militants said a suicide bombing that killed 12 people on Tuesday was car-ried out in retaliation for the film.

One of the Charlie Hebdo cartoons, entitled “Mohammad: a star is born”, depicted a bearded figure crouching over to display naked buttocks and genitals, a star covering his anus.

A second cartoon, in reference to the scandal over a French magazine’s decision to publish topless photos of the wife of Britain’s Prince William, showed a topless, bearded character with the caption: “Riots in Arab countries after photos of Mrs. Mohammad are published.”

“We have the impression that it’s officially allowed for Charlie Hebdo to attack the Catholic far-right but we cannot poke fun at fundamental Islamists,” Charlie Hebdo editor Stephane Charbonnier, who drew the front-page cartoon, said.

“It shows the climate - everyone is driven by fear, and that is exactly what this small handful of extremists who do not represent anyone want - to make everyone afraid, to shut us all in a cave,” he told Reuters.

“We are taking different looks at the issue, but the minute we discuss it we are going to mess up Pastor and Bruno - and maybe others that we try talking to,” Wolff said when asked whether Williams would stick with the same lineup. “I would give it another month before we are going to have the first idea of what we want.”

Williams have highly rated Finnish youngster Valtteri Bottas as their test and reserve driver, who also has management links to Wolff and would be a well-placed internal candidate to step up to a race seat. Bottas has taken part in several Friday morning practice sessions this season.

Venezuelan Maldonado brings substantial sponsorship with him from his country’s state oil com-pany PDVSA and is also a race win-ner after his pole-to-flag victory in Spain this year, former champions

Williams’ first triumph since 2004. However, he has also been involved in a spate of incidents that have led to numerous starting grid penalties and cost the team precious points.

HUGE TALENTWolff, who works closely with

Frank Williams and took on the execu-tive director role in July, made it clear that he expected Maldonado to stay and lead the team further up the grid.

“In 2013 we will have a carry-over of the car so I’d like to see us in the points more regularly. Pastor hope-fully stays with us and has learned his lessons - so the next logical step would be the top six in the construc-tors’ - or even top five,” he said.

Wolff said Maldonado had a “huge raw talent”, was extremely fast and also an intelligent driver who realised he needed to take a differ-ent approach. “Maybe Pastor has to

change the way he is driving and he has accepted that. So we take it from there. I am sure we will see many more successful races from him in the future,” added the Austrian.

His comments on Brazilian Senna, nephew of the late triple champion Ayrton who died in a Wil-liams in 1994, were less effusive.

“Bruno is very intelligent and

very sensitive and that means he is putting a lot of pressure on himself. Whether it is the name or not, I don’t know,” he declared.

“Every racing driver in F1 is very competitive and Bruno is trying to fight the fact that he hasn’t had a huge racing education, as the family didn’t want him to go racing. But he has made his way into F1, which

means that he is good.“He has an extremely fast team

mate and he needs to follow his path. He is pushing very hard and we are trying to support him as best we can.” Williams are currently eighth in the 12 team championship, nine points behind Force India. Maldonado has scored 29 points to Senna’s 25.

SYDNEY - Venus Williams will make her Hopman Cup debut in Perth later this year, partnering John Isner to represent the United States in the mixed international tournament, organisers said on Wednesday. Seven-times grand slam champion Williams will have a chance to match her sister Serena, who won the tournament in 2008 with Mardy Fish and five years

earlier with James Blake.“I’ve never been to Perth - I’ve

never played the Hopman Cup, so for me it’s going to be a wonder-ful experience,” Williams said in a media release. “I’ve watched it literally every year on TV so now I get to play, I’m very excited.”

World number 10 Isner won the title in 2011 with Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who stands at 5ft 6in (1.68 m)-tall to his 6ft 9in (2.06m). Williams is 6ft 1in (1.85m). “My

previous two partners have been very, very small,” said Isner.

“But Venus is a little bit taller so I’m not going to look like such a giant out there. She’s obviously one of the greatest players ever so I think our team has a good shot to do well.”

Novak Djokovic and Ana Ivanovic have already been con-firmed as the Serbia pairing for the event, which will take place from Dec. 29 to Jan. 5 at the new Perth Arena.

Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg’s hopes of a step for-ward in form from Mercedes have been lifted with their team poised to race its new Coanda-effect exhausts at this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix, AUTOSPORT can reveal.

The Brackley-based outfit tested a heavily revised exhaust layout on its W03 during last week’s young driver test at Magny-Cours - mak-ing use of the concept that has been put to good use by a number of teams this year including Ferrari, McLaren and Sauber.

The developments completed more than 1000 kilometres during the three days of testing in the hands of Sam Bird and Brendon Hartley - and team sources suggest the outfit was hugely encouraged by the performance boost they brought to the car.

Mercedes now plans to fit the new exhaust layout to both Schu-macher and Rosberg’s cars in Friday practice in Singapore.

If the testing proves successful, then the team will commit to racing it on the Marina Bay circuit too.

Team principal Ross Brawn told AUTOSPORT last week that the benefits of the exhaust layout – which improves exhaust and airflow to the floor of the car – would be especially felt on the type of low

speed corners that are so common in Singapore.

“We think that’s quite significant in low speed traction,” he said about where the speed was improved with the Coanda exhausts.

“The effect of the exhaust is more significant at lower speeds than higher speeds, and also brings you the balance perhaps you need for the rear tyre.”

Brawn admitted at the Italian GP that the team had perhaps focused too much recently on understanding tyres, rather than bringing develop-ments like the Coanda exhaust, which had meant it falling behind its rivals.

Mercedes also trialled a Lotus-style of double DRS during the Mag-ny-Cours test too, but this is unlikely to be raced for a little while.

The team made significant prog-ress with it last week and it could trial it in some Friday practice ses-sions to perfect its set-up before electing to race with it.

Although the W03 also appeared with a shark fin on the engine cover for the final day at Magny-Cours, AUTOSPORT has learned that this was not a performance develop-ment aimed to be raced this year but is instead part of an FIA-backed programme to help improve driver identification for fans.

Wolff casts doubt on Senna future at WilliamsReuters

lONDON - Williams want penalty-prone Pastor Maldonado to stay with them next season but Bruno Senna’s future with the Formula One team is less certain, influential shareholder and executive director Toto Wolff indicated on Tuesday. The austrian, increasingly cast as the eventual successor to team principal and founder Frank Williams, told the official Formula One website (www.formula1.com) ahead of Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix that a decision on drivers for 2013 was still some way off.

Ronaldo’s revelation two weeks ago that he was feeling “sad” for professional reasons and his refusal to celebrate goals had not helped but Mourinho’s rallying call appeared to have the desired effect as Real stormed back to break City hearts. The English champions were on the verge of pulling off a stunning smash and grab raid against the nine-times European champions at the Bernabeu, twice taking the lead in the second half through substitutes Edin Dzeko and Aleksandar Ko-larov.

Roared on by fans desperate for a return to winning ways, Real equalised first through Marcelo and then as late as the 87th minute when substitute Karim Benzema stroked the ball into the net just two minutes after Kola-rov’s strike.

MONTPELLIER, France - Arse-nal recovered from an early setback and the absence of manager Arsene Wenger from the dugout to ruin Montpellier’s Champions League debut with a 2-1 victory in their opening Group B match on Tuesday. With all eyes on former Montpellier favourite Olivier Giroud, returning to his old club just months after firing them to the title, goals from Lukas Podolski and Gervinho cancelled out Younes Belhanda’s early penalty to earn Arsenal the points as they began a 15th straight season in the Champions League.

Montpellier battled desperately for an equaliser after the break but Arse-nal survived to maintain their record of never having lost a European tie against French opposition in France. “It was great to score again. I like these situations, it was a great pass by Olivier (Giroud) and I feel good in those moments,” Podolski said.

PARIS - Stars looked finally aligned as Paris St Germain’s game fell into place in a perfect start to their Champions League campaign on Tuesday.

The French club, who spent over 200 million euros ($261.29 million) on transfers since being taken over by Qatari investors over a year ago, seem likely to avoid the fate of fellow big-spenders Manchester City who exited the competition in the first round last season.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side ruthlessly dismissed Dynamo Kiev 4-1 for their first Champions League game in eight years, opening a 3-0 lead after 32 minutes with their recent signings delivering sterling performances. “It’s a fantastic start. It was not easy. We made our opponent

look bad, but it does not mean they were bad,” Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who opened the scoring from the

penalty spot, told reporters. His former AC Milan team mate Thiago

Silva looked solid in central defence for his PSG debut and even scored the team’s second. Sweden striker Ibrahimovic, one

of several top signings in the close season, benefited from some outstanding work from

his team mates, especially fellow forwards Javier Pastore, who was hugely disappointing last

season, and Jeremy Menez.“Pastore has improved since (the previous game

against) Toulouse,” said Ancelotti. “I hope he will con-tinue like this. He played very well with Ibra and Menez.” Pastore ghosted past challenges to create chances for team mates and was rewarded with a last-gap goal that wrapped up a dream night for the Argentine.

“The key player was Menez because he opened up space for Ibrahimovic and Pastore,” added Ancelotti, who had plenty other reasons to rejoice.

Ronaldo late show breaks Manchester City hearts

Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo from Portugal celebrates af-

ter scoring a goal against Manchester City during a Champions

League Group D soccer match at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium,

in Madrid, Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012.

Reuters

MADRID - Cristiano Ronaldo may have been down in the dumps recently but he stepped up when Real Madrid needed him most to snatch an electrifying 3-2 come-back win at home to Manchester City in Champions League Group D on Tuesday. Jose Mourinho’s side were on the verge of crisis after a dreadful start to La Liga and the Portuguese coach had launched a stinging attack on his players in a bid to stun them into life for their opening game in Europe’s elite club competition.

expensive player and Ronaldo danced in from the left and unleashed a powerful shot that flew into the net under City goalkeeper Joe Hart.

The ecstatic Real fans celebrated as if their team had just won the 10th European crown that has eluded them since 2002 and Mourinho, fists pumping, performed a cel-ebratory knee slide onto the pitch from his technical area.

“I celebrate when I have to celebrate,” a jubilant Ronaldo, who has now scored 151 goals in 151 appearances for Real, told Span-ish television. “The match was very important for us and we are back in the fight,” added the Portugal forward whose Champions League tally of 39 puts him level with former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba.

The clash in the Spanish capital was a con-test between Europe’s biggest spenders over the past four seasons and a thrilling encounter lived up to the pre-match hype. Mourinho sprung several surprises in his starting lineup, leaving out experienced Spain centre back Sergio Ramos and replacing him with French 19-year-old Raphael Varane.

He also handed a debut to defensive mid-fielder Michael Essien, who joined from Chelsea last month, and left playmakers Mesut Ozil and another new signing, Luka Modric, on the bench.

City’s Roberto Mancini fielded an unambi-tious formation with Carlos Tevez ploughing a lonely furrow up front with David Silva and Samir Nasri on the flanks in front of defensive midfielders Yaya Toure, Gareth Barry and Javi Garcia, a former Real player.

UNDER PRESSURE

Real were under pressure to produce a convincing European performance after losing two and drawing one of their opening four La Liga games and made their intentions clear early on when Ronaldo forced two fine saves from Joe Hart. City barely had a sniff of goal in the first half, while Real striker Gonzalo Higuain fluffed two clear chances, one when he was clean through with only Hart to beat and the other when he volleyed over from close range.

The stadium was stunned into silence when City’s Yaya Toure won the ball in central midfield and sent Dzeko clear to make it 1-0 in the 69th minute before fullback Marcelo equalised eight minutes

later w i t h a d e -flected effort.

C i t y were ahead again five min-utes from time when Real keeper Iker Casillas failed to deal with Kolarov’s inswinging free kick but their joy did not last long as the home side snatched victory in a frenetic ending. Benzema made it 2-2 in the 87th minute with a low shot that sneaked inside the post before Ronaldo se-cured a winning start to the group for the La Liga champions.

“It’s not on. You can’t go 2-1 up and lose the game,” an angry Hart told ITV television. “We can only blame ourselves. They are a very good team and so are we. We dug deep, got a lead twice and threw it away. It’s hard to come off the field after losing 3-2 and be positive.”

Real have the morale-boosting vic-tory they so desperately needed while City, who only made their debut in the competition last season, head home thinking about what might have been.

They can at least take some com-fort from the thought that their remaining trips to group r i va l s Bo rus -sia Dortmund and Ajax Amsterdam are likely to be considerably less daunting.

Arsenal recover to ruin Montpellier’s debut

“We can have a lot of regrets because the match was almost over in two minutes for us. You cannot be happy when you lose but I think we bothered them like they rarely are.”

It had all started so well for Mont-pellier. There were just nine minutes on the clock when Thomas Ver-maelen was adjudged to have fouled Belhanda on the edge of the area and the Moroccan got up to chip his spot kick past Arsenal keeper Vito Mannone.

The raucous crowd loved it, but they were silenced after 16 minutes when Giroud demonstrated just why Arsenal had sought his signature, sup-plying a neat flick for Podolski to beat home keeper Geoffrey Jourdren.

Two minutes later Arsenal struck again. Carl Jenkinson’s low cross into the area was seized upon by Gervinho who guided the ball into the net from close range.

The double blow knocked the stuffing out of Montpellier as Ar-senal settled into their possession game although Remi Cabella did force Mannone into one fingertip save before the break. Arsenal were forced to show defensive resilience in the second half as

Montpellier chased the equaliser.

ANXIOUS MOMENTS

There were some anxious mo-ments for Wenger, watching from high in the stands as he begins a three-match European ban for his behaviour towards match officials after Arsenal’s exit against Milan last season. Cabella’s fine lob come back off the woodwork while Belhanda found himself in front of goal with 10 minutes left but only managed to fire his shot straight at Mannone.

Apart from his assist, Giroud was fairly quiet against his old club and was substituted with 20 minutes remaining, leaving the field to a warm ovation from the home fans. “I’m happy with the match. I think I was decisive setting up Podolski’s goal, so i’m satisfied,” Giroud told reporters.

Arsenal assistant manager Steve Bould, thrust into the limelight for the night, said the tiring Gunners rode their luck a little after the break but did a “team job”.

“We looked a little bit tired in the second half. It was tough. It is quite an intimidating place to come and play so we’re glad to get the result,” he told reporters.

Bould will also be on duty

a t p i t c h -side next week

when Arsenal, who have not lost on the opening day of the Champions League since 2003, host Olympiakos Piraeus while Montpellier visit Schalke 04 who started with a 2-1 win over the Greek side.

In the midfield, the 19-year-old Marco Verratti played with the self-confidence of a veteran, oozing class and calm through-out. “The three midfielders were fantastic,” s a i d Ancelotti who had to make with the ab-sence of Italy midfielder Thiago Motta because of an injury.

The Italian also has what PSG lacked last season - depth in the squad. Ibrahi- movic and Menez were replaced by Argentine forward Ezequiel Lavezzi and Nene, last season’s Ligue 1 joint top scorer, respectively with the duo im-mediately posing threat to the Dynamo Kiev defence.

It is now up to Ancelotti to deal with that depth and he could already make some changes in Saturday’s Ligue 1 trip to promoted Bastia. “We are happy that we have three great centre backs,” he said, referring to Silva, Alex and France defender Mamadou Sakho, who missed Tuesday’s game through injury. “I hope that Mamadou will be fit on Saturday. There are a lot of matches to be played and we could start a rotation in central defence.”

League Group D soccer match at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium,

in Madrid, Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012.

(kmb27)

FRANKFURT — U.S. stock index futures held small gains Wednesday after the Bank of Japan moved to boost the size of its asset-purchase program, helping to offset nervous-ness surrounding a territorial dispute between Japan and China. Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJZ2 +0.32% rose 26 points, or 0.2%, to 13,525.

S&P 500 Index futures SPZ2 +0.16% gained 2.6 points to 1,455.50, while Nasdaq-100 futures NDZ2 +0.18% rose 8 points to 2,858.

The headquarters of the Bank of Japan in Tokyo. “Another slug of [quantitative easing]—this time by the Bank of Japan—has given equity markets more momentum in overnight trade and is paving the way for a higher start on Wall Street,” said Fawad Razaqzada, market strategist at GFT Mar-kets, in emailed comments.

The moves “seem to be eclipsing the standoff between Japan and China at least for now, although any further suggestions that

Beijing—as Japan’s biggest creditor—should use this position as leverage would certainly be cause for concern,” Razaqzada said.

Coming less than a week after the U.S. Federal Reserve announced it would embark on a third round of quantitative easing, the Bank of Japan on Wednesday said it would provide more monetary stimulus in response to a slowing domestic economy. The bank said it would increase the size of its asset purchases by ¥10 trillion ($126.7 billion) to a total of about ¥80 trillion. Read: Bank of Japan adds to stimulus .

While a further move by the central bank was seen as a possibility, the scale of the additional buying wasn’t fully factored in by market participants, strategists said.

American Airlines said on Tuesday it has notified more than 11,000 workers they could lose their jobs as part of its bankruptcy reorganization, and said it was cutting flights by one to two percent for the rest of September and October. The U.S. carrier expects fewer than 40 percent of those it sent notices to, or 4,400 people, will actually be laid off in November and December, spokesman Bruce Hicks said.

(kmb31)
