Though “Twilight” still is a female-driven franchise, with girls and women making up 79 percent of the opening-weekend audience, the finale drew the biggest male crowds in the series. tle to end the story of warring vampires and werewolves.

“Our male audience par-ticularly has enjoyed this film,” said Richie Fay, head of distribution for Lionsgate, whose Summit Entertainment banner releases the “Twilight” movies. “With the action scenes in this one, we’re hop-ing the holdover business will reflect the fact that males have kind of found it out.”

The movie also helped lift Lionsgate into the big

leagues among Hollywood studios. Paced by its $400 million smash with “The Hunger Games” and now the “Twilight” finale, Lionsgate surpassed $1 billion at the domestic box office for the first time. America proved its Bieber Fever was strong: The teen singer dominated the American Music Awards on Sunday night. Bieber’s wins included the show’s top award, artist of the year. His mom joined him on-stage as he collected the trophy, beating out Rihanna, Maroon 5, Katy Perry and Drake.

“I wanted to thank you for always believing in me,” Bieber said, looking to his mom. The 18-year-old also won the honor in 2010. He said it’s “hard grow-ing up with everyone watching me” and asked that people con-tinue to believe in him.

Bieber and Nicki Minaj performed together — and separately — at the AMAs, and were both multiple winners. But another collaboration was the night’s most colorful perfor-mance: Korean rapper PSY and MC Hammer. Hammer joined the buzzed-about pop star for his viral hit “Gangnam Style.” PSY rocked traditional “Ham-mer” pants as they danced to his jam and to Hammer’s “Too Legit to Quit.”

Minaj, who wore three dif-ferent wigs and four outfits throughout the night, repeated her AMAs wins from last year, picking up trophies for favorite rap/hip-hop artist and album for “Pink Friday: Roman Re-loaded.” She was in an all-white get-up, including fur coat and pink hair when she performed her new song “Freedom.” The scene was ghostly and snowy, as a choir — also in white — joined her onstage. One background singer stole the performance, belting semi-high notes as Minaj looked on.

As Bieber won his second award, he was kissed on the neck by Jenny McCarthy, who presented the award. “Wow. I feel violated right now,” he said, laughing.

“I did grab his butt,” McCa-rthy said backstage. “I couldn’t help it. He was just so delicious. So little. I wanted to tear his head off and eat it.” Bieber’s red and black outfit seemed to be the night’s theme, as Taylor Swift and Usher wore similar ensembles. EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

As concerned about the environment, the Santika In-donesia Hotels & resort in cooperation with the Goethe Institute Jakarta held the Science Day program in the Hotel Santika Siligita, Saturday (Nov 3). The activity involving the students of SD Negeri 5 Benoa, South Kuta, elementary school was commenced with cleanup services on the Mengiat Beach and resumed by watching educa-tional movies.

The struggle monument at Rumada Square, Tamblang village, never gets gov-ernment assistance at all since it was built in 2000. When the monument was established, it was only self-financed by the veterans of Tamblang village.

As observation made on Sunday (Nov 18), the struggle monument built on the area of less than 100 square meters painted in moss green looked vile. Near the monument area, weeds were left to grow wild. Besides, the monument indicated some cracks be-cause of its old age. More than that, right in front of the monument there was a disposal land of backfill, so that the vile impression was getting more visible.

Treasurer II of the Panca Marga Youth (PPM) of Kubutambahan subdistrict, Nyo-man Sasdiawan, recognized that maintenance of the struggle monument located in the Rumada Square could not have been carried out well. The maintenance carried out was

only sober such as cutting the grass around the monument. The last grass cutting was made around August ahead of the anniversary of the Independence Day. “Formerly, the monument was not painted, but only roughly polished by cement. It was painted recently after receiving donation from the veteran families of Tamb-lang village,” he said.

Sasdiawan expected that local govern-ment could disburse annual maintenance cost for the monument in Kubutambahan subdistrict. Other than at Tamblang vil-lage, similar struggle monuments were also built at Depeha, Tunjung and Tambakan in Kubutambahan subdistrict. The latter three monuments got less attention and were rarely maintained. “We do expect the government assistance and not just for this monument, but also for the other monuments in Kubu-tambahan subdistrict. They need adequate assistance from local government for the maintenance,” he explained. (kmb)

pasar-Gilimanuk last Sat-urday (17/11) afternoon to-tally jammed for a couple of kilometers as a trailer truck concrete carrier was being evacuated. It fell at Pangyan-gan turning point on the Den-pasar – Gilimanuk road. The truck driven by Ariadi that was carrying 10 concretes weighting 3.5 tons each was evacuated by a crane. “If us-ing a normal way it would be too heavy and its location is too steep. So we must use a crane to evacuate the truck,” one worker stated.

The 25 tons crane coming from Denpasar caused both ways route closed caus-

ing one hour jam. Head of Pekutatan police, PC Ko-mang Kardika, along with his officers coordinated the closing with Gilimanuk and Tabanan polices such as with Gilimanuk Harbour, Melaya, Negara and Mendoyo Polices to have some vehicles parked first to avoid any long traf-fic. One tourist from Klaten, Central Java, Yulius Adi, ad-mitted disappointed with the traffic as he and his friends were in a rush. A number of tourist attractions weren’t also visited by a number of scheduled tours. “Yesterday in Ketapang (coming to Bali) was a long queue, now on the way home too in this route,” Adi explained. Singaraja (Bali Post)—The fairly heavy rain

flushed a number of areas in the town of Singaraja on Sunday afternoon (Nov 18). Although it rained for a short time, the water overflowed onto a number of main roads in Singaraja due to a few culverts on the road. Even, some cul-verts were closed after the recent road improvement project.

As monitoring of Bali Post, the main road of Jalan Ahmad Yani, Banyu-asri village, Singaraja, was the most severely flooded due to the rain. On the right and left roadside, the level of water reached knee-deep of adults. As a result, the traffic flow of vehicles from and out of

the town was disturbed.Vehicles had to move

slowly and tried to take turn when passing through the road body that was not flooded by rain water. Nevertheless, large ve-hicles were forced to cross a fairly deep puddle. To drain the puddle, people were trying to make a hole on the street connected to the existing sewer line.

According to local resident, the rain water soaked the road body be-cause there was no drain of rainwater into the sewer line on the roads ide. As a result, the puddles persisted and soaked the road body longer. Pre-viously, there had been holes around the road body used to dispose rain-

water. However, after the recent road improvement project, the holes were invisible and estimated to have been buried by road elevation.

Other than the closed drain, the road section indeed had minimal drains and they were of small size, so that they were un-able to drain water when raining heavily. “In the past, there were some holes but very small, so that they could not drain water quickly. The holes are now covered by the project and diminish due to the recent road im-provement,” said one of the residents.

Similarly, the rainwa-ter also overflowed onto the road section of Jalan

Pantai Lingga leading to Banyuasri Terminal. When it rained, the culverts were unable to accommodate a large volume of water, so it overflowed onto the road. Unfortunately, the flood water carried muddy rubbish that ultimately accumulated on the road body. Even, the muddy rubbish on the road ex-uded unpleasant smell that could interfere with the surrounding residents.

“This culvert is usu-ally taken advantage to dispose fish waste by fish mongers existing in the terminal. Now, this culvert has clogged up and the mud with stench spreads. We feel to be much aggrieved,” said a resident. (kmb)

The tool is the latest of the new advertising features Facebook is offering to convince marketers that steering advertising dollars to the company will deliver a payoff. Facebook, with roughly 1 billion users, has faced a tough reception on Wall Street amid concerns about its slowing revenue growth.

“Measuring ad effectiveness and outcomes is absolutely crucial to all types of businesses and marketers,” said David Baser, a product man-ager for Facebook’s ads business who said the “conversion measure-ment” tool has been a top customer request for a long time.

The sales information that ad-vertisers receive is anonymous, said Baser. “You would see the number of people who bought shoes,” he said, using the example of an online shoe retailer. But marketers would not be able to get information that could identify the people, he added.

The conversion tool is specifi-cally designed for so-called direct response marketers, such as online retailers and travel websites that ad-vertise with the goal of drumming up immediate sales rather than for longer-term brand-building.

Such advertisers have long flocked to Google Inc’s Web search engine, which can deliver ads to consumers at the exact moment they’re looking for information on a particular product. But some analysts say there is room for Fa-cebook to make inroads if it can demonstrate results.

“The path to purchase” is not as direct on Facebook as it is on Google’s search engine, said Debra Aho Williamson, an analyst with re-search firm eMarketer. But she said that providing information about customer sales conversion should help Facebook make a stronger case to online retailers.

million hacking attempts have been made on Israeli government web sites since Wednesday when Israel began its Gaza air strikes, the gov-ernment said on Sunday. Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz said just one hacking attempt was successful on a site he did not want to name, but it was up and running after 10 minutes of downtime.

Typically, there are a few hun-dred hacking attempts a day on Israeli sites, the ministry said.

Attempts on defence-related sites have been the highest, while 10 million attempts have been made on the site of Israel’s president, 7 million on the Foreign Ministry and 3 million on the site of the prime minister.

A ministry spokesman said while the attacks have come from around the world, most have been from Is-rael and the Palestinian territories.

“The ministry’s computer divi-sion will continue to block the millions of cyber attacks,” Steinitz said. “We are enjoying the fruits of

our investment in recent years in developing computerized defence systems.”

Steinitz has instructed his min-istry to operate in emergency mode to counter attempts to undermine government sites.

Both sides in the Gaza conflict, but particularly Israel, are embrac-ing the social media as one of their tools of warfare. The Israeli Defense Force has established a presence on nearly every platform available while Palestinian militants are ac-tive on Twitter.

“The war is taking place on three fronts. The first is physical, the second is on the world of social networks and the third is cyber,” said Carmela Avner, Israel’s chief information officer.

Last month, U.S. Defence Secre-tary Leon Panetta said cyberspace is the battlefield of the future, with at-tackers already going after banks and other financial systems. KUTA - Energy and mineral resources minister Jero Wacik met with several oil production sharing contractors here on Fri-day to give assurance following the dissolution of upstream oil and gas regulating agency BP Migas.

He said he had to assure all oil and gas stakeholders, contractors from home and abroad that he had taken over all the tasks and functions of BP Migas so that they would remain calm.

“Companies need not stop their activities as I have already taken over (all the tasks and func-tions of BP Migas),” he said.

Among the contractors he met were from Medco, Indika, Efindo and some foreign companies.

He said al l the t ransi t ion process is still underway and all contracts that have been signed would remain normal while preparations for negotiations for new contracts would also continue as they have already been under his control.

He said no contract was il-legal because what has been declared as illegal was only BP

Migas’ existence and not con-tract agreements.

Regarding new contracts he said they would be signed by the minister of energy and mineral resources as the manager of for-mer BP Migas.

Jero said the meeting was one of the swift actions taken by the government to assure normal oil and gas company activities following the dissolution of BP Migas on November 13.

“The income from oil and gas is recorded at Rp300 trillion a year or Rp1 trillion a day. So if the problem is ignored the state would lose,” he said.

Following the dissolution of BP Migas following the ruling of the Constitutional Court stating that its existence was against the constitution President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono issued a presidential decree to hand over the tasks and functions of BP Migas to the ministry of energy and mineral resources.

With regard to that Jero Wacik said that it would be furtehr improved while additional presi-dential decrees would also be issued to clear and strengthen regulations.

“We have taken steps, cover-ing 64.144 km of the affected coastline, to tackle the problem,” Bal i Environmental Agency (BLH) head I Nyoman Sujaya said here on Monday.

BLH is cooperating with the local Public Work Office and Bali Penida River Board in its efforts to control the erosion of Bali`s coastline.

“Plantat ion of mangroves along the beaches is one of the measures taken to prevent fur-ther abrasion of the shorelines,” Nyoman stated.

“During the period from 2009 to 2012, about 250,000 trees have been planted over an area of 92.5 hectares,” he added.

According to BLH data, near-ly 20.8 percent of the 7,200 hect-

ares of coral reef in Bali waters have been damaged.

“Despite the large area there is to be covered, the local admin-istration has rehabilitated 360 hectares of coral reef in Balinese waters over the past three years,” Sujana said.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — An Israeli missile ripped through a two-story home in a residential area of Gaza City on Sunday, killing at least 11 civilians, including four young children and an 81-year-old woman, in the single deadliest at-tack of Israel’s offensive against Islamic militants.

A similar scene unfolded else-where in the city early Monday, when an airstrike leveled two houses belonging to a single family, killing two children and two adults and injuring 42 people, including children, said Gaza heath official Ashraf al-Kidra. While the airstrikes relentlessly targeted militant rocket operations, Israeli gunboats unleashed a steady tattoo of heavy machine gun fire and shells at militant facilities on Gaza’s coastal road.

The bloodshed was likely to raise pressure on Israel to end the fight-ing, even as it pledged to intensify the offensive by striking the homes of wanted militants. High numbers of civilian casualties in an offensive four years ago led to fierce criticism and condemnation of Israel.

matter” -- an old Chinese phrase meaning “ruin befalls those who are weak”.

“In recent years, some countries have stored up problems over time leading to seething public anger, civil unrest and government col-lapse -- corruption has been an important factor in all this,” state newspapers quoted Xi as telling a study session for the Politburo, the party’s second-highest decision-making body.

“A great deal of facts tell us that the worse corruption becomes the

only outcome will be the end of the party and the end of the state! We must be vigilant!” Xi added.

“Recently, our party has had serious discipline and legal cases of a despicable nature which has had a bad political effect and shocked people,” he said, without naming any of these incidents. The effort of Bali Government to increase health condition in the villages seems to be facing difficulties as there are still villages not having any midwives. They are needed for mother and baby health. The Head of Bali Health Agency, dr. Ketut Suarjaya, when contacted last Sunday (18/11) stated that Bali has around 716 villages and the midwives needed in one area is still in shortage. “More is needed as they have to share knowl-edge and going mobile in giving health services,” Suarjaya explained.

Those villages are located in Karangasem, Buleleng and Klungkung such as at Kubu and Ban also Nusa Penida. Based on the Agency’s data, the number of doctors and nurses are outstanding especially in health community centers with 1068 doctors and 5331 nurses while midwives only reached 3891 which is still not enough. To help, those areas in need of mid-wife, the Agency planned to give aid by employing 40 PTT Midwives workers even though there are only 40 of them. “It’s not that the midwives don’t want to work it’s just a number of villages don’t have enough budget for midwives to work there,” Suarjaya continued. Aside from taking action against motorists failing to complete a number of papers, police also arrested a drug dealer named Ardianto Prakoso, 25, a resident of Jalan Dewi Sri 28, Kuta, Badung. The suspect was proved to bring along a roll of marijuana inserted into a cigarette pack.

The suspect who worked as entertainer was arrested by po-lice that organized the operation of condition creation. As usual, the ranks of South Denpasar Police undertook the operation at vulnerable points. Even, the operation was carried out early in the morning. One by one, the passing vehicle was stopped to examine its papers. Not to forget, police also searched the trunk of car or motorbike.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., the suspect passed by riding a motorcycle. His motorcycle was also stopped. At that time, the suspect had shown suspicious gestures. He looked like being confused. “Our members did an examination on selective basis. The suspect was searched and found a roll of suspicious object inserted into his cigarette pack. Apparently, it was marijuana,” said the Chief of South Denpasar Police, Agus Tri Waluyo.

Therefore, continuation of the case would be developed by the Narcotics officers of the Denpasar Metro Police. “We’ve handed over the case to Denpasar Metro Police. Henceforth, they will handle the case,” he told reporters last Sunday.

At separate location, the per-sonnel of Narcotics Unit Chief of the Denpasar Metro Police, I Wayan Suarda, also arrested a suspected marijuana dealer on Saturday (Nov 17) at 10:00 p.m. The suspect named Bertoni Siswanto, 34, from Jakarta and living at Padang Kartika Housing Gang Maruti No. 18A Denpasar, was arrested at his home. The evidence seized from the suspect consisted of a wooden ashtray containing a roll of marijuana with gross weight of 0.58 gram and net weight of 0.37 gram as well as a cigarette box contain-ing marijuana seed and leaf with net weight of 0.08 gram and two pieces of cigarette roll paper. HONG KONG — General Motors Co. and its local Chinese partners have launched a second plant to make cars for its local discount brand Baojun, ratcheting up the battle for customers at the fast-growing lower end of the world’s biggest auto market.

The SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture opened the factory on Sunday in southwestern Guangxi province. GM and its partners have invested 8 billion yuan ($1.3 billion) in the facility, which will be capable of turning out up to 400,000 ve-hicles a year.

The joint venture is also building a powertrain factory at the plant that will be able to produce up to 400,000 engines annually. It’s scheduled to open in September 2013.

The first car to roll off the plant’s production line was a Baojun 630 midsize sedan, one of two cars sold under the only-in-China badge. The 630 sells for about 63,000 yuan ($10,100) while the Le Chi mini car goes for about 40,000 yuan ($6,400).

China surpassed the United States as the world’s biggest auto market by vehicles sold in 2009 but slowing sales growth has prompted global automakers to look for new ways to tap the faster-growing low end of the Chinese market in smaller cities and the countryside.

In September, Nissan unveiled the second model from its new low-priced Chinese brand Venucia, a compact hatchback that will sell for as little as 67,800 yuan ($10,760). Honda has also launched a budget brand, Li Nian.

The SAIC-GM-Wuling is focused on making mini-trucks and microvans.

SEOUL — South Korea’s trade minister says South Korea, China and Japan will soon start talks for a free trade pact encompassing the three Asian economic powers.

Bark Tae-ho said Monday that the decision to start talks will be officially announced Tuesday at the East Asia Sum-mit in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh.

Bark said the trade pact would help boost economic growth and pave the way for more stable political rela-tionships in the region where China and Japan have been at odds over the sovereignty of islands in the East China Sea.

Relations between South Korea and Japan have also been strained by a territorial dispute.

China and Japan are the world’s second and third big-gest economies. South Korea is the 15th largest and home to giant companies such as Samsung.

Zhang’s sales are down 20 percent with no rebound in sight, while labor costs are up.

China is recovering but the days of dou-ble-digit growth are gone. Faced with fall-ing returns from a three-decade-old growth model fueled by exports and investment, Beijing is trying to rebalance the economy by promoting consumer spending, service industries and technology. “The world has to get used to the idea that China will grow at a 7 or 8 percent pace, and growth will be far less investment-intensive over the next decade,” said Mark Williams of Capital Economics. “So the projections for Chi-nese demand for commodities, capital goods, construction equipment and so on have to be revised down.’”

The Communist Party has commit-ted in broad strokes to growth based on consumer spending and innovation in its five-year development plan that runs through 2015. A report in February by the World Bank and a Chinese Cabinet think tank said that to achieve that, the government will need to make politically daunting changes including curbing the dominance of state companies.

New leaders including General Secre-tary Xi Jinping who took power last week are under pressure to deliver on the party plans to overhaul the economy. But how far

they will go to rein in politically favored state companies and other vested interests is unclear.

Growth slowed to a three-year low of 7.4 percent in the three months ending in September. That prompted concern the new leaders might feel compelled to boost spending on build-ing bridges and other public works, setting back efforts to reduce reliance on investment. But retail sales and other indicators are improving, easing pressure for abrupt changes.

This year’s growth is explosive by Western standards but well below the 14.1 percent that China racked up in 2007 on its way to passing Japan as the second-largest economy in 2009.

Forecasters expected a Chinese recov-ery early this year. As the slump deepened, the International Monetary Fund and others cut growth forecasts for the year to below 8 percent — the weakest since the 1990s. Even after a recovery, they see it rising to only about 8.5 percent by 2014.

JEMBRANA - Thousands of ve-hicles dominated by those of domes-tic travelers having spent weekend holiday on the island of Bali were forced to queue at Gilimanuk on Sat-urday night (Nov 17). Some travelers even had to overnight in order to get aboard.

The harbor had begun to be thronged by cars and tourist buses since Saturday night and when getting into late night the number of vehicles soared. Only within an hour, the harbor parking lot had been entirely filled with cars and buses. The queue reached out of the harbor and kept on getting longer after trucks came in with private cars. In response to such condition, the officials separated the bus queue lane from private cars in front of the Gilimanuk terminal. Un-luckily, such an effort was still unable to quickly reduce the queue. Even, the vehicle queue reached two kilometers from the ticket counter.

PARIS — The controversial Ukrainian group Femen, whose top-less members stage pranks to support gay rights, have taunted a march in Paris by Catholics who oppose France’s draft law to legalize gay marriage.

The Catholic group Civitas organized Sunday’s march by several thousand people carrying pro-family banners.

Several Femen activists turned up topless, chanted “in gay we trust” and sprayed white powder from bottles.

That prompted several anti-gay marriage protesters to hit the Femen members and push them to the ground.

On Saturday several thousand people took to the streets in cities across France to protest the draft law, which could see marriage and adoption legalized for homosexual couples early next year.

INDIANAPOLIS — A missing family cat has been rescued from the ruins of a home near the center of the deadly Indianapolis house explosion. Fire Capt. Rita Burris says the black cat named Gidget had been missing since the fiery blast late Saturday night.

A federal investigator found Gidget on Friday hiding behind a couch in the home of her owners, Glenn and Gloria Olvey. Burris says the cat was scared but otherwise in good condition. The Olveys already had recovered their other three pets.

The family lives next door to the house where the blast is believed to have originated. Glenn Olvey says the blast hurled him several feet and trapped him, his wife and one of their two teenage daughters when their roof collapsed. Shelters are housing several recovered pets.

district, Banten province, damaging a number of houses, according to a local official.

“There is no report of fatalities in the disaster,” said Muklis, the head of the Lebak disaster mitigation office, here on Monday.

He noted that incessant heavy rains on Sunday triggered the floods and landslides.

The disaster-affected sub-districts are Leuwidamar, Cimarga, Sobang and Lebak Gedong.

Muklis stated that 70 houses were swept away and 100 others inundated, with floodwaters reaching a height of up to 50 cm.

In Sobang and Lebak Gedong, 16 houses are still under threat of landslides, while nine have been damaged and three others almost de-stroyed.

“Volunteers, military personnel and Red Cross officers have moved the victims, who have lost their houses, to safer areas,” Muklis said.

The Lebak authorities have sent relief aid to the victims and also put the region’s emergency personnel on alert, because heavy rains are forecast to continue in the coming few weeks.

A number of evacuation facilities, such as rubber boats and ambulances, have been kept ready in anticipation of emergency situations.

vehicles of Indonesia, popularly known as “becaks”, which are basically pedicabs or tricycles, are rarely seen these days in the metropolitan city of Jakarta.

Becaks cluttering the main streets of Jakarta were a common sight before 1994. After that, they were banned in the city because of their propensity to cause traf-fic jams.

Consequent ly, becaks are widely missed by people living in housing complexes situated away from the main roads, because of the lack of public transportation means in the small and narrow streets of the city.

But these traditional vehicles are still a favourite in cities and towns across Java island and elsewhere.

In the nation’s leading cul-tural city, Yogyakarta, which has numerous attractions and is the second most visited destination in Indonesia after Bali, the becak is being promoted as a tourism icon.

The head of Yogyakarta`s tourism development office, Bambang Suwarmintarta, said

the becak would continue to ex-ist as a means of public transport even as Yogyakarta develops as a metropolitan city.

“The becak has had a positive impact on the development of Yogyakarta`s public civiliza-tion,” he noted.

“The link between becak and the development of public civili-zation in Yogyakarta can be seen from several dimensions, namely becak as a mode of traditional transportation, becak drivers being responsible citizens of the city, and becak as the mover of economic activity,” Bambang pointed out.

“In the city of Yogyakarta, which covers a total area of 30.5 sq km, becak has become the es-sential mode of transportation for the city’s people, especially for tourists who are keen to visit the cultural tourism sites,” he said.

Yogyakarta’s cultural heritage includes, among other things, magnificent temples, ruins of palaces and monasteries, vari-ous traditions, cultural events, traditional folk and performing arts, and architecture.

It is important to note that this is all part of the living culture of

Yogyakarta that colours the daily activities of local inhabitants.

Due to its rich cultural heri-tage, Yogyakarta has long been known as the cradle of Javanese culture, which continues to at-tract domestic and foreign tour-ists every year.

Foreign tourists visiting Yog-yakarta admit that they love trav-elling around by becak because it is “fun and exciting”.

Besides, the city’s becak driv-ers are friendly and always ready to take tourists around at reason-able fares.

That is why, this traditional mode of transport has for years been a special attraction for for-eign tourists.

“I like travelling by becak every time I visit Yogyakarta be-cause the drivers are friendly and never ask for unreasonably high fares,” said Marianne Lammers, a tourist from the Netherlands.

The Dutch woman from the city of Haarlem said she had visited Indonesia several times and Yogyakarta was her favourite destination.

Some tourists even want to buy becaks and take them to their home country as souvenirs.

by neighboring Rwanda, reached the outskirts of the eastern city of Goma on Sunday after pushing back government troops, despite U.N. peacekeepers firing back from helicopter gunships.

The rebels, known as M23, are led by mutinying soldiers who rose up eight months ago, accusing the Democratic Republic of Congo’s government of failing to respect a 2009 peace agreement to integrate insurgents from a previous rebellion into the army.

They have now fought four days of battles to come closer than ever to Goma, home to a million people, including hundreds of thou-sands of refugees who have converged there as the rebels advanced elsewhere, and are now fleeing again. Rebels have repeatedly said they do not plan to capture the city, which sits at the Rwandan bor-der on the north shore of Lake Kivu in the foothills of mist-covered volcanoes. Goma is a provincial capital and headquarters of U.N. peacekeepers.

Thousands of displaced people were abandoning camps in the north of the city to escape the advancing rebels, said Tariq Riebl, humanitar-ian program co-ordinator for Oxfam aid agency. Goma residents were trying to evacuate families, while trucks full of Congolese soldiers were seen leaving the city on Sunday.

“The question now is, what does this (fighting) mean? Are M23 going to take Goma? Nobody knows,” he said. Colonel Vianney Ka-zarama, spokesman for the M23 rebels, said fighters had advanced to within two kilometers of Goma and would hold their position around five km outside the city.

“We’re not going to take the airport, we are responding to an at-tack by the army ... We’re just doing this to break the capacity of the FARDC (Congolese army),” Kazarama told Reuters. “The situation remains under control,” he said later in a text message.

As a new comer, he was asked to comply with the local rules. One of which, he had to worship him manifested through four large stone shrines that existed at the area. At that time, Ngurah Rangsasa asked to struggle while showing off supernatural power and it was met by Danghyang Nirartha.

However, before accomplishing the worship, the stone shrines in use shattered. Ultimately, Ngurah Rangsasa recognized the supernatural power of Nirartha and the imperious character of the Perancak ruler vanished. Later on, Ngurah Rangsasa moved to the north under the hill.

Due to his presence there, local people then named the area Sawe Rangsasa. According to local legend, the word sawe originating from the word sawa or soul refers to Gusti Ngurah Rangsasa, the former ruler of Perancak. So far, within the area of Perancak Temple stands a memorial chamber shrine used to venerate the descendants of Ngurah Rangsasa. Additionally, at the temple entrance of Perancak is set a pair of crocodile statue on the stairs.

According to Jro Mangku Sadra who has been in service for 40 years, the statue described the situation of Perancak estuary at that time where the swamp area was still filled with dozens of crocodiles.

triple-double with 25 points, 13 re-bounds and a career-high 10 assists, and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Golden State Warriors 119-109.

‘’I really didn’t care, to be hon-

est. If it came, then that’s cool. If it didn’t, then just keep playing,’’ Durant said. ‘’It feels good to get one. Now, I guess I’ve got a little monkey off my back. I can just go out there and play.’’

Durant has endured some grow-ing pains this season trying to im-prove his floor game, with a bump in his assist numbers coinciding with an increase in his turnovers, too. He came in averaging four turnovers per game, the fourth-worst in the league.

But after ending up with more turnovers than assists in each of his first five NBA seasons, Durant is starting to reverse that trend this season. He’s also grabbing about two more rebounds per game than any other time in his career.

‘’There’s going to be nights where I have to score 30. There’s going to be nights where I have to have seven or eight assists,’’ Durant said. ‘’So, I’m just trying to be an all-around player and just continue to help my team win.’’

Durant turned it over just twice in this one and pumped his right fist after he set up Kevin Martin’s 3-pointer with 4:57 to play for his 10th assist. The play also helped the Thunder hold on after Golden State cut a 21-point deficit to seven in the fourth quarter.

Russell Westbrook scored 30 points and Martin had 23 off the

bench as Oklahoma City had a season-high 31 assists for the second straight game and a season high in points. Durant, Westbrook and Martin also combined for 22 assists.

Stephen Curry led the War-riors with 22 points, and David Lee chipped in 19 points and 10 rebounds.

‘’Durant’s a pretty good passer to begin with and we decided we were going to load up a lot on him and Russell when they got the ball and make other guys beat us,’’ Lee said. ‘’The problem with loading up sometimes on him is that he’s 6-11 and can see over it and make passes.

‘’I always considered him a pretty unselfish player, considering the amount of talent he has to score the basketball. I don’t think that you would call him a selfish scorer by any means.’’

It looked for a while as though Durant might be stuck on nine as-sists - matching his previous career best from a double-overtime game against Denver during his rookie season in Seattle.

Durant and Westbrook teamed up to score eight straight points late in the third quarter, with Westbrook’s 3-pointer from the top of the key extending Oklahoma City’s lead to 86-67. Durant had a chance to pick up his 10th assist before the end of

the third period, but instead kept the ball on a fast break and wound up with a three-point play that put the Thunder ahead 94-73.

He started the fourth quarter on the bench, but got a chance to come back in when Oklahoma City’s reserves let the lead start slipping away.

Pirlo’s importance was clear on Saturday as he sat out the Serie A match against Lazio through suspension and Juventus, who had scored 10 goals in their previous two games, stuttered to a goalless draw. Never the happiest-looking of characters with his long, droopy face, Pirlo’s favoured role as a deep-lying playmaker makes him something of a rarity in modern football.

The 33-year-old, ever-present in their Champions League campaign to date, dictates the rhythm of the five-man Juventus midfield, floating exquisitely-timed 40 metre passes over the opposing backline or threading gaps in the defence.

The Serie A champions have lost only twice in all competitions since Pirlo joined them at the start of last season from AC Milan where his own career had run into a dead end. Spain coach Vicente del Bosque sug-gested recently

Pirlo’s importance was clear on Saturday as he sat out the Serie A match against Lazio through suspension and Juventus, who had scored 10 goals in their previous two games, stuttered to a goalless draw. Never the happiest-looking of characters with his long, droopy face, Pirlo’s favoured role as a deep-lying playmaker makes him something of a rarity in modern football.

The 33-year-old, ever-present in their Champions League campaign to date, dictates the rhythm of the five-man Juventus midfield, floating exquisitely-timed 40 metre passes over the opposing backline or threading gaps in the defence.

BERLIN - VfL Wolfsburg’s new sports director Klaus Allofs en-joyed a successful debut as the 2009 Bundesliga champions won 3-1 at Hoffenheim on Sunday to continue their recovery under interim coach Lorenz-Guenther Koestner.

Perancak Temple is situated on the southern tip of Jembrana subdistrict, precisely at Perancak village. This temple is one of the Dang Khayangan temples (used to venerated Hindu sage) in Bali. It is closely related to some other similar temples in Jembrana such as the Rambutsiwi, Jati, Prapat Agung and Majapahit Temple.

On the pilgrimage of Danghyang Nirartha or Pedanda Sakti Wawu Rauh from Java to Bali, he should show off his supernatural power against the king ruling the Tanjung Ketapang, Perancak with the title I Gusti Ngurah Rangsasa. According to Jro Mangku Nyoman Sadra, 72, the temple with anniversary falling every Buda Manis (Wednesday) Medangsia was inseparable from the pilgrimage of Danghyang Nirartha to Bali.

Before he came to Jembrana, Perancak or Tanjung Ketapang was already in command by I Gusti Ngurah Rangsasa. When Nirartha ar-rived at Perancak through the estuary of Perancak directly overlook-ing the southern sea, the ruler of Perancak, Gusti Ngurah Rangsasa examined the capability of Danghyang Nirartha.

As a new comer, he was asked to comply with the local rules. One of which, he had to worship him manifested through four large stone shrines that existed at the area. At that time, Ngurah Rangsasa asked to struggle while showing off supernatural power and it was met by Danghyang Nirartha.

However, before accomplishing the worship, the stone shrines in use shattered. Ultimately, Ngurah Rangsasa recognized the supernatural power of Nirartha and the imperious character of the Perancak ruler vanished. Later on, Ngurah Rangsasa moved to the north under the hill.

Due to his presence there, local people then named the area Sawe Rangsasa. According to local legend, the word sawe originating from the word sawa or soul refers to Gusti Ngurah Rangsasa, the former ruler of Perancak. So far, within the area of Perancak Temple stands a memorial chamber shrine used to venerate the descendants of Ngurah Rangsasa. Additionally, at the temple entrance of Perancak is set a pair of crocodile statue on the stairs.

According to Jro Mangku Sadra who has been in service for 40 years, the statue described the situation of Perancak estuary at that time where the swamp area was still filled with dozens of crocodiles.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Three-time NBA scoring champion Kevin Durant is determined to become known as more than a one-dimen-sional player.

He took a big step in that direc-

tion Sunday night.Durant notched his first career

triple-double with 25 points, 13 re-bounds and a career-high 10 assists, and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Golden State Warriors 119-109.

‘’I really didn’t care, to be hon-

est. If it came, then that’s cool. If it didn’t, then just keep playing,’’ Durant said. ‘’It feels good to get one. Now, I guess I’ve got a little monkey off my back. I can just go out there and play.’’

Durant has endured some grow-ing pains this season trying to im-prove his floor game, with a bump in his assist numbers coinciding with an increase in his turnovers, too. He came in averaging four turnovers per game, the fourth-worst in the league.

But after ending up with more turnovers than assists in each of his first five NBA seasons, Durant is starting to reverse that trend this season. He’s also grabbing about two more rebounds per game than any other time in his career.

‘’There’s going to be nights where I have to score 30. There’s going to be nights where I have to have seven or eight assists,’’ Durant said. ‘’So, I’m just trying to be an all-around player and just continue to help my team win.’’

Durant turned it over just twice in this one and pumped his right fist after he set up Kevin Martin’s 3-pointer with 4:57 to play for his 10th assist. The play also helped the Thunder hold on after Golden State cut a 21-point deficit to seven in the fourth quarter.

Russell Westbrook scored 30 points and Martin had 23 off the

‘’Durant’s a pretty good passer to begin with and we decided we were going to load up a lot on him and Russell when they got the ball and make other guys beat us,’’ Lee said. ‘’The problem with loading up sometimes on him is that he’s 6-11 and can see over it and make passes.

A timing glitch forced the capsule to overshoot its intended landing site slightly by a few miles, but made an otherwise smooth touch down at 7:56 a.m. local time — one hour before sunrise — on Monday (Nov. 20), NASA officials said. It was the first time in six years that a Soyuz spacecraft has landed at night, and only the fourth time in the 12-year history of Soyuz flights to the space station, Navias said. Some of the Soyuz’s landing activities oc-curred a few seconds late, causing it to overshoot its landing site, but Russian recovery teams were able to

compensate for the change during the descent, he added.

Weather at the landing site was overcast and freezing, with tempera-tures of 12 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 11 degrees Celsius), though it felt like 0 degrees F (minus 17 degrees C) with the wind, Navias said. The Soyuz capsule landed on its side, a common configuration, and recovery teams were expected to work quickly to retrieve the astronauts due to the cold weather.

Williams and her crew wore broad smiles after being extracted from their capsule. They sat in reclining seats under thick blankets to stay warm in the frigid cold before being moved to a inflatable medical tent for post-landing checks.

Williams, Malenchenko and Ho-shide launched into orbit in mid-July, with Williams becoming the second female commander of the station when she took charge earlier this year. PARIS — The controversial Ukrainian group Femen, whose top-less members stage pranks to support gay rights, have taunted a march in Paris by Catholics who oppose France’s draft law to legalize gay marriage.

The Catholic group Civitas organized Sunday’s march by several thousand people carrying pro-family banners.

Several Femen activists turned up topless, chanted “in gay we trust” and sprayed white powder from bottles.

That prompted several anti-gay marriage protesters to hit the Femen members and push them to the ground.

On Saturday several thousand people took to the streets in cities across France to protest the draft law, which could see marriage and adoption legalized for homosexual couples early next year.

INDIANAPOLIS — A missing family cat has been rescued from the ruins of a home near the center of the deadly Indianapolis house explosion. Fire Capt. Rita Burris says the black cat named Gidget had been missing since the fiery blast late Saturday night.

A federal investigator found Gidget on Friday hiding behind a couch in the home of her owners, Glenn and Gloria Olvey. Burris says the cat was scared but otherwise in good condition. The Olveys already had recovered their other three pets.

The family lives next door to the house where the blast is believed to have originated. Glenn Olvey says the blast hurled him several feet and trapped him, his wife and one of their two teenage daughters when their roof collapsed. Shelters are housing several recovered pets.

AntaraBANTEN - Floods and landslides have hit several sub-districts in Lebak

district, Banten province, damaging a number of houses, according to a local official.

“There is no report of fatalities in the disaster,” said Muklis, the head of the Lebak disaster mitigation office, here on Monday.

He noted that incessant heavy rains on Sunday triggered the floods and landslides.

The disaster-affected sub-districts are Leuwidamar, Cimarga, Sobang and Lebak Gedong.

Muklis stated that 70 houses were swept away and 100 others inundated, with floodwaters reaching a height of up to 50 cm.

In Sobang and Lebak Gedong, 16 houses are still under threat of landslides, while nine have been damaged and three others almost de-stroyed.

“Volunteers, military personnel and Red Cross officers have moved the victims, who have lost their houses, to safer areas,” Muklis said.

The Lebak authorities have sent relief aid to the victims and also put the region’s emergency personnel on alert, because heavy rains are forecast to continue in the coming few weeks.

A number of evacuation facilities, such as rubber boats and ambulances, have been kept ready in anticipation of emergency situations.

vehicles of Indonesia, popularly known as “becaks”, which are basically pedicabs or tricycles, are rarely seen these days in the metropolitan city of Jakarta.

Becaks cluttering the main streets of Jakarta were a common sight before 1994. After that, they were banned in the city because of their propensity to cause traf-fic jams.

Consequent ly, becaks are widely missed by people living in housing complexes situated away from the main roads, because of the lack of public transportation means in the small and narrow streets of the city.

But these traditional vehicles are still a favourite in cities and towns across Java island and elsewhere.

In the nation’s leading cul-tural city, Yogyakarta, which has numerous attractions and is the second most visited destination in Indonesia after Bali, the becak is being promoted as a tourism icon.

The head of Yogyakarta`s tourism development office, Bambang Suwarmintarta, said

the becak would continue to ex-ist as a means of public transport even as Yogyakarta develops as a metropolitan city.

“The becak has had a positive impact on the development of Yogyakarta`s public civiliza-tion,” he noted.

“The link between becak and the development of public civili-zation in Yogyakarta can be seen from several dimensions, namely becak as a mode of traditional transportation, becak drivers being responsible citizens of the city, and becak as the mover of economic activity,” Bambang pointed out.

“In the city of Yogyakarta, which covers a total area of 30.5 sq km, becak has become the es-sential mode of transportation for the city’s people, especially for tourists who are keen to visit the cultural tourism sites,” he said.

Yogyakarta’s cultural heritage includes, among other things, magnificent temples, ruins of palaces and monasteries, vari-ous traditions, cultural events, traditional folk and performing arts, and architecture.

It is important to note that this is all part of the living culture of

Yogyakarta that colours the daily activities of local inhabitants.

Due to its rich cultural heri-tage, Yogyakarta has long been known as the cradle of Javanese culture, which continues to at-tract domestic and foreign tour-ists every year.

Foreign tourists visiting Yog-yakarta admit that they love trav-elling around by becak because it is “fun and exciting”.

Besides, the city’s becak driv-ers are friendly and always ready to take tourists around at reason-able fares.

That is why, this traditional mode of transport has for years been a special attraction for for-eign tourists.

“I like travelling by becak every time I visit Yogyakarta be-cause the drivers are friendly and never ask for unreasonably high fares,” said Marianne Lammers, a tourist from the Netherlands.

The Dutch woman from the city of Haarlem said she had visited Indonesia several times and Yogyakarta was her favourite destination.

Some tourists even want to buy becaks and take them to their home country as souvenirs.

by neighboring Rwanda, reached the outskirts of the eastern city of Goma on Sunday after pushing back government troops, despite U.N. peacekeepers firing back from helicopter gunships.

The rebels, known as M23, are led by mutinying soldiers who rose up eight months ago, accusing the Democratic Republic of Congo’s government of failing to respect a 2009 peace agreement to integrate insurgents from a previous rebellion into the army.

They have now fought four days of battles to come closer than ever to Goma, home to a million people, including hundreds of thou-sands of refugees who have converged there as the rebels advanced elsewhere, and are now fleeing again. Rebels have repeatedly said they do not plan to capture the city, which sits at the Rwandan bor-der on the north shore of Lake Kivu in the foothills of mist-covered volcanoes. Goma is a provincial capital and headquarters of U.N. peacekeepers.

Thousands of displaced people were abandoning camps in the north of the city to escape the advancing rebels, said Tariq Riebl, humanitar-ian program co-ordinator for Oxfam aid agency. Goma residents were trying to evacuate families, while trucks full of Congolese soldiers were seen leaving the city on Sunday.

“The question now is, what does this (fighting) mean? Are M23 going to take Goma? Nobody knows,” he said. Colonel Vianney Ka-zarama, spokesman for the M23 rebels, said fighters had advanced to within two kilometers of Goma and would hold their position around five km outside the city.

“We’re not going to take the airport, we are responding to an at-tack by the army ... We’re just doing this to break the capacity of the FARDC (Congolese army),” Kazarama told Reuters. “The situation remains under control,” he said later in a text message.

HONG KONG — General Motors Co. and its local Chinese partners have launched a second plant to make cars for its local discount brand Baojun, ratcheting up the battle for customers at the fast-growing lower end of the world’s biggest auto market.

The SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture opened the factory on Sunday in southwestern Guangxi province. GM and its partners have invested 8 billion yuan ($1.3 billion) in the facility, which will be capable of turning out up to 400,000 ve-hicles a year.

The joint venture is also building a powertrain factory at the plant that will be able to produce up to 400,000 engines annually. It’s scheduled to open in September 2013.

The first car to roll off the plant’s production line was a Baojun 630 midsize sedan, one of two cars sold under the only-in-China badge. The 630 sells for about 63,000 yuan ($10,100) while the Le Chi mini car goes for about 40,000 yuan ($6,400).

China surpassed the United States as the world’s biggest auto market by vehicles sold in 2009 but slowing sales growth has prompted global automakers to look for new ways to tap the faster-growing low end of the Chinese market in smaller cities and the countryside.

In September, Nissan unveiled the second model from its new low-priced Chinese brand Venucia, a compact hatchback that will sell for as little as 67,800 yuan ($10,760). Honda has also launched a budget brand, Li Nian.

The SAIC-GM-Wuling is focused on making mini-trucks and microvans.

SEOUL — South Korea’s trade minister says South Korea, China and Japan will soon start talks for a free trade pact encompassing the three Asian economic powers.

Bark Tae-ho said Monday that the decision to start talks will be officially announced Tuesday at the East Asia Sum-mit in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh.

Bark said the trade pact would help boost economic growth and pave the way for more stable political rela-tionships in the region where China and Japan have been at odds over the sovereignty of islands in the East China Sea.

Relations between South Korea and Japan have also been strained by a territorial dispute.

China and Japan are the world’s second and third big-gest economies. South Korea is the 15th largest and home to giant companies such as Samsung.

Business for retailers, hotels, photo stu-dios and other service industries is picking up as China limps out of its deepest slump since the 2008 global crisis. But exporters and manufacturers who drove its boom over the past decade are struggling.

Zhang’s sales are down 20 percent with no rebound in sight, while labor costs are up.

“The second half of the year is even harder than the first half,” said Zhang, who employs 60 people at his factory in Meizhou in Guangdong province near Hong Kong.

China is recovering but the days of dou-ble-digit growth are gone. Faced with fall-ing returns from a three-decade-old growth model fueled by exports and investment, Beijing is trying to rebalance the economy by promoting consumer spending, service industries and technology. It is a strategy that promises smaller but more sustainable gains. That could have global repercussions by dampening voracious demand for iron ore, industrial equipment and other imports

that drove growth for suppliers from Aus-tralia to Africa to Germany.

“The world has to get used to the idea that China will grow at a 7 or 8 percent pace, and growth will be far less investment-intensive over the next decade,” said Mark Williams of Capital Economics. “So the projections for Chi-nese demand for commodities, capital goods, construction equipment and so on have to be revised down.’”

The Communist Party has commit-ted in broad strokes to growth based on consumer spending and innovation in its five-year development plan that runs through 2015. A report in February by the World Bank and a Chinese Cabinet think tank said that to achieve that, the government will need to make politically daunting changes including curbing the dominance of state companies.

New leaders including General Secre-tary Xi Jinping who took power last week are under pressure to deliver on the party plans to overhaul the economy. But how far

they will go to rein in politically favored state companies and other vested interests is unclear.

Growth slowed to a three-year low of 7.4 percent in the three months ending in September. That prompted concern the new leaders might feel compelled to boost spending on build-ing bridges and other public works, setting back efforts to reduce reliance on investment. But retail sales and other indicators are improving, easing pressure for abrupt changes.

This year’s growth is explosive by Western standards but well below the 14.1 percent that China racked up in 2007 on its way to passing Japan as the second-largest economy in 2009.

Forecasters expected a Chinese recov-ery early this year. As the slump deepened, the International Monetary Fund and others cut growth forecasts for the year to below 8 percent — the weakest since the 1990s. Even after a recovery, they see it rising to only about 8.5 percent by 2014.

JEMBRANA - Thousands of ve-hicles dominated by those of domes-tic travelers having spent weekend holiday on the island of Bali were forced to queue at Gilimanuk on Sat-urday night (Nov 17). Some travelers even had to overnight in order to get aboard.

The harbor had begun to be thronged by cars and tourist buses since Saturday night and when getting into late night the number of vehicles soared. Only within an hour, the harbor parking lot had been entirely filled with cars and buses. The queue reached out of the harbor and kept on getting longer after trucks came in with private cars. In response to such condition, the officials separated the bus queue lane from private cars in front of the Gilimanuk terminal. Un-luckily, such an effort was still unable to quickly reduce the queue. Even, the vehicle queue reached two kilometers from the ticket counter.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — An Israeli missile ripped through a two-story home in a residential area of Gaza City on Sunday, killing at least 11 civilians, including four young children and an 81-year-old woman, in the single deadliest at-tack of Israel’s offensive against Islamic militants.

A similar scene unfolded else-where in the city early Monday, when an airstrike leveled two houses belonging to a single family, killing two children and two adults and injuring 42 people, including children, said Gaza heath official Ashraf al-Kidra. Rescue workers were frantically searching for 12 to

15 members of the Azzam family under the rubble.

While the airstrikes relentlessly targeted militant rocket operations, Israeli gunboats unleashed a steady tattoo of heavy machine gun fire and shells at militant facilities on Gaza’s coastal road.

The bloodshed was likely to raise pressure on Israel to end the fight-ing, even as it pledged to intensify the offensive by striking the homes of wanted militants. High numbers of civilian casualties in an offensive four years ago led to fierce criticism and condemnation of Israel.

In all, 81 Palestinians, about half of them civilians, have been killed in the five-day onslaught and 720 have been wounded. Three Israeli

civilians have died from Palestinian rocket fire and dozens have been wounded..

President Barack Obama said he was in touch with players across the region in hopes of halting the fight-ing, while also warning of the risks of Israel expanding its air assault into a ground war.

“We’re going to have to see what kind of progress we can make in the next 24, 36, 48 hours,” Obama said during a visit in Thailand.

U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon urged the two warring parties to achieve an immediate cease-fire. He said he was heading to the region to appeal personally for an end to the vio-lence, but no date was given in the U.N. statement for his arrival.

BEIJING - If corruption is al-lowed to run wild in China then the ruling Communist Party risks major unrest and the collapse of its rule, state media on Monday quoted Communist Party chief Xi Jinping as saying at one of his first major meetings since taking the role.

In unusually blunt language, Vice President Xi, who assumes Hu Jintao’s job as head of state in March, said that graft was like “worms breeding in decaying

matter” -- an old Chinese phrase meaning “ruin befalls those who are weak”.

“In recent years, some countries have stored up problems over time leading to seething public anger, civil unrest and government col-lapse -- corruption has been an important factor in all this,” state newspapers quoted Xi as telling a study session for the Politburo, the party’s second-highest decision-making body.

“A great deal of facts tell us that the worse corruption becomes the

only outcome will be the end of the party and the end of the state! We must be vigilant!” Xi added.

“Recently, our party has had serious discipline and legal cases of a despicable nature which has had a bad political effect and shocked people,” he said, without naming any of these incidents. The run up to this month’s party congress, at which a new generation of leaders was unveiled, was overshadowed by a scandal involving former po-litical heavyweight Bo Xilai, once a contender for top leadership in the

world’s second-largest economy.Bo was expelled from the party

this year and faces possible charges of corruption and abuse of power, while his wife was jailed for mur-dering a British businessman.

The effort of Bali Government to increase health condition in the villages seems to be facing difficulties as there are still villages not having any midwives. They are needed for mother and baby health. The Head of Bali Health Agency, dr. Ketut Suarjaya, when contacted last Sunday (18/11) stated that Bali has around 716 villages and the midwives needed in one area is still in shortage. “More is needed as they have to share knowl-edge and going mobile in giving health services,” Suarjaya explained.

Those villages are located in Karangasem, Buleleng and Klungkung such as at Kubu and Ban also Nusa Penida. Based on the Agency’s data, the number of doctors and nurses are outstanding especially in health community centers with 1068 doctors and 5331 nurses while midwives only reached 3891 which is still not enough. To help, those areas in need of mid-wife, the Agency planned to give aid by employing 40 PTT Midwives workers even though there are only 40 of them. “It’s not that the midwives don’t want to work it’s just a number of villages don’t have enough budget for midwives to work there,” Suarjaya continued. The operation of condition creation held by the ranks of South Denpasar Police on Jalan Kerta Dalem, Sidakarya, South Denpasar, Sunday morning (Nov 18), was successful. Aside from taking action against motorists failing to complete a number of papers, police also arrested a drug dealer named Ardianto Prakoso, 25, a resident of Jalan Dewi Sri 28, Kuta, Badung. The suspect was proved to bring along a roll of marijuana inserted into a cigarette pack.

The suspect who worked as entertainer was arrested by po-lice that organized the operation of condition creation. As usual, the ranks of South Denpasar Police undertook the operation at vulnerable points. Even, the operation was carried out early in the morning. One by one, the passing vehicle was stopped to examine its papers. Not to forget, police also searched the trunk of car or motorbike.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., the suspect passed by riding a motorcycle. His motorcycle was also stopped. At that time, the suspect had shown suspicious gestures. He looked like being confused. “Our members did an examination on selective basis. The suspect was searched and found a roll of suspicious object inserted into his cigarette pack. Apparently, it was marijuana,” said the Chief of South Denpasar Police, Agus Tri Waluyo.

of South Denpasar Police. Hav-ing been examined, the suspect admitted if the i l l icit goods belonged to him. Additionally, he admitted to obtain the mari-juana from his friend with initial AM. AM was from Surabaya but on holiday in Bali. “We also searched the room of the suspect and found the other illicit goods,” said the former Chief of the Ngu-rah Rai Airport Area Police.

Chief Agus Tri Waluyo added that after preparing the prelimi-nary investigation report, the case was then handed over to the Nar-cotics Unit of the Denpasar Metro Police. Therefore, continuation of the case would be developed by the Narcotics officers of the Denpasar Metro Police. “We’ve handed over the case to Denpasar Metro Police. Henceforth, they will handle the case,” he told reporters last Sunday.

At separate location, the per-sonnel of Narcotics Unit Chief of the Denpasar Metro Police, I Wayan Suarda, also arrested a suspected marijuana dealer on Saturday (Nov 17) at 10:00 p.m. The suspect named Bertoni Siswanto, 34, from Jakarta and living at Padang Kartika Housing Gang Maruti No. 18A Denpasar, was arrested at his home. The evidence seized from the suspect consisted of a wooden ashtray containing a roll of marijuana with gross weight of 0.58 gram and net weight of 0.37 gram as well as a cigarette box contain-ing marijuana seed and leaf with net weight of 0.08 gram and two pieces of cigarette roll paper. The tool is the latest of the new advertising features Facebook is offering to convince marketers that steering advertising dollars to the company will deliver a payoff. Facebook, with roughly 1 billion users, has faced a tough reception on Wall Street amid concerns about its slowing revenue growth.

“Measuring ad effectiveness and outcomes is absolutely crucial to all types of businesses and marketers,” said David Baser, a product man-ager for Facebook’s ads business who said the “conversion measure-ment” tool has been a top customer request for a long time.

The sales information that ad-vertisers receive is anonymous, said Baser. “You would see the number of people who bought shoes,” he said, using the example of an online shoe retailer. But marketers would not be able to get information that could identify the people, he added.

The conversion tool is specifi-cally designed for so-called direct response marketers, such as online retailers and travel websites that ad-vertise with the goal of drumming up immediate sales rather than for longer-term brand-building.

Such advertisers have long flocked to Google Inc’s Web search engine, which can deliver ads to consumers at the exact moment they’re looking for information on a particular product. But some analysts say there is room for Fa-cebook to make inroads if it can demonstrate results.

“The path to purchase” is not as direct on Facebook as it is on Google’s search engine, said Debra Aho Williamson, an analyst with re-search firm eMarketer. But she said that providing information about customer sales conversion should help Facebook make a stronger case to online retailers.

million hacking attempts have been made on Israeli government web sites since Wednesday when Israel began its Gaza air strikes, the gov-ernment said on Sunday. Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz said just one hacking attempt was successful on a site he did not want to name, but it was up and running after 10 minutes of downtime.

Typically, there are a few hun-dred hacking attempts a day on Israeli sites, the ministry said.

Attempts on defence-related sites have been the highest, while 10 million attempts have been made on the site of Israel’s president, 7 million on the Foreign Ministry and 3 million on the site of the prime minister.

A ministry spokesman said while the attacks have come from around the world, most have been from Is-rael and the Palestinian territories.

“The ministry’s computer divi-sion will continue to block the millions of cyber attacks,” Steinitz said. “We are enjoying the fruits of

our investment in recent years in developing computerized defence systems.”

Steinitz has instructed his min-istry to operate in emergency mode to counter attempts to undermine government sites.

Both sides in the Gaza conflict, but particularly Israel, are embrac-ing the social media as one of their tools of warfare. The Israeli Defense Force has established a presence on nearly every platform available while Palestinian militants are ac-tive on Twitter.

“The war is taking place on three fronts. The first is physical, the second is on the world of social networks and the third is cyber,” said Carmela Avner, Israel’s chief information officer.

Last month, U.S. Defence Secre-tary Leon Panetta said cyberspace is the battlefield of the future, with at-tackers already going after banks and other financial systems. KUTA - Energy and mineral resources minister Jero Wacik met with several oil production sharing contractors here on Fri-day to give assurance following the dissolution of upstream oil and gas regulating agency BP Migas.

He said he had to assure all oil and gas stakeholders, contractors from home and abroad that he had taken over all the tasks and functions of BP Migas so that they would remain calm.

“Companies need not stop their activities as I have already taken over (all the tasks and func-tions of BP Migas),” he said.

Among the contractors he met were from Medco, Indika, Efindo and some foreign companies.

He said al l the t ransi t ion process is still underway and all contracts that have been signed would remain normal while preparations for negotiations for new contracts would also continue as they have already been under his control.

He said no contract was il-legal because what has been declared as illegal was only BP

Migas’ existence and not con-tract agreements.

Regarding new contracts he said they would be signed by the minister of energy and mineral resources as the manager of for-mer BP Migas.

Jero said the meeting was one of the swift actions taken by the government to assure normal oil and gas company activities following the dissolution of BP Migas on November 13.

“The income from oil and gas is recorded at Rp300 trillion a year or Rp1 trillion a day. So if the problem is ignored the state would lose,” he said.

Following the dissolution of BP Migas following the ruling of the Constitutional Court stating that its existence was against the constitution President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono issued a presidential decree to hand over the tasks and functions of BP Migas to the ministry of energy and mineral resources.

With regard to that Jero Wacik said that it would be furtehr improved while additional presi-dential decrees would also be issued to clear and strengthen regulations.

“We have taken steps, cover-ing 64.144 km of the affected coastline, to tackle the problem,” Bal i Environmental Agency (BLH) head I Nyoman Sujaya said here on Monday.

BLH is cooperating with the local Public Work Office and Bali Penida River Board in its efforts to control the erosion of Bali`s coastline.

“Plantat ion of mangroves along the beaches is one of the measures taken to prevent fur-ther abrasion of the shorelines,” Nyoman stated.

“During the period from 2009 to 2012, about 250,000 trees have been planted over an area of 92.5 hectares,” he added.

According to BLH data, near-ly 20.8 percent of the 7,200 hect-

ares of coral reef in Bali waters have been damaged.

“Despite the large area there is to be covered, the local admin-istration has rehabilitated 360 hectares of coral reef in Balinese waters over the past three years,” Sujana said.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

The activity involving the students of SD Negeri 5 Benoa, South Kuta, elementary school was commenced with cleanup services on the Mengiat Beach and resumed by watching educa-tional movies.

The struggle monument at Rumada Square, Tamblang village, never gets gov-ernment assistance at all since it was built in 2000. When the monument was established, it was only self-financed by the veterans of Tamblang village.

As observation made on Sunday (Nov 18), the struggle monument built on the area of less than 100 square meters painted in moss green looked vile. Near the monument area, weeds were left to grow wild. Besides, the monument indicated some cracks be-cause of its old age. More than that, right in front of the monument there was a disposal land of backfill, so that the vile impression was getting more visible.

Treasurer II of the Panca Marga Youth (PPM) of Kubutambahan subdistrict, Nyo-man Sasdiawan, recognized that maintenance of the struggle monument located in the Rumada Square could not have been carried out well. The maintenance carried out was

only sober such as cutting the grass around the monument. The last grass cutting was made around August ahead of the anniversary of the Independence Day. “Formerly, the monument was not painted, but only roughly polished by cement. It was painted recently after receiving donation from the veteran families of Tamb-lang village,” he said.

Sasdiawan expected that local govern-ment could disburse annual maintenance cost for the monument in Kubutambahan subdistrict. Other than at Tamblang vil-lage, similar struggle monuments were also built at Depeha, Tunjung and Tambakan in Kubutambahan subdistrict. The latter three monuments got less attention and were rarely maintained. “We do expect the government assistance and not just for this monument, but also for the other monuments in Kubu-tambahan subdistrict. They need adequate assistance from local government for the maintenance,” he explained. (kmb)

pasar-Gilimanuk last Sat-urday (17/11) afternoon to-tally jammed for a couple of kilometers as a trailer truck concrete carrier was being evacuated. It fell at Pangyan-gan turning point on the Den-pasar – Gilimanuk road. The truck driven by Ariadi that was carrying 10 concretes weighting 3.5 tons each was evacuated by a crane. “If us-ing a normal way it would be too heavy and its location is too steep. Singaraja (Bali Post)—The fairly heavy rain

flushed a number of areas in the town of Singaraja on Sunday afternoon (Nov 18). Although it rained for a short time, the water overflowed onto a number of main roads in Singaraja due to a few culverts on the road. Even, some cul-verts were closed after the recent road improvement project.

As monitoring of Bali Post, the main road of Jalan Ahmad Yani, Banyu-asri village, Singaraja, was the most severely flooded due to the rain. On the right and left roadside, the level of water reached knee-deep of adults. As a result, the traffic flow of vehicles from and out of

the town was disturbed.Vehicles had to move

slowly and tried to take turn when passing through the road body that was not flooded by rain water. Nevertheless, large ve-hicles were forced to cross a fairly deep puddle. To drain the puddle, people were trying to make a hole on the street connected to the existing sewer line.

According to local resident, the rain water soaked the road body be-cause there was no drain of rainwater into the sewer line on the roads ide. As a result, the puddles persisted and soaked the road body longer. Pre-viously, there had been holes around the road body used to dispose rain-

water. However, after the recent road improvement project, the holes were invisible and estimated to have been buried by road elevation.

Other than the closed drain, the road section indeed had minimal drains and they were of small size, so that they were un-able to drain water when raining heavily. “In the past, there were some holes but very small, so that they could not drain water quickly. The holes are now covered by the project and diminish due to the recent road im-provement,” said one of the residents.

Similarly, the rainwa-ter also overflowed onto the road section of Jalan

Pantai Lingga leading to Banyuasri Terminal. When it rained, the culverts were unable to accommodate a large volume of water, so it overflowed onto the road. Unfortunately, the flood water carried muddy rubbish that ultimately accumulated on the road body. Even, the muddy rubbish on the road ex-uded unpleasant smell that could interfere with the surrounding residents.

“This culvert is usu-ally taken advantage to dispose fish waste by fish mongers existing in the terminal. Now, this culvert has clogged up and the mud with stench spreads. We feel to be much aggrieved,” said a resident. (kmb)

tle to end the story of warring vampires and werewolves.

America proved its Bieber Fever was strong: The teen singer dominated the American Music Awards on Sunday night. Bieber’s wins included the show’s top award, artist of the year. His mom joined him on-stage as he collected the trophy, beating out Rihanna, Maroon 5, Katy Perry and Drake.

“I wanted to thank you for always believing in me,” Bieber said, looking to his mom. The 18-year-old also won the honor in 2010. He said it’s “hard grow-ing up with everyone watching me” and asked that people con-tinue to believe in him.

Bieber and Nicki Minaj performed together — and separately — at the AMAs, and were both multiple winners. But another collaboration was the night’s most colorful perfor-mance: Korean rapper PSY and MC Hammer. Hammer joined the buzzed-about pop star for his viral hit “Gangnam Style.” PSY rocked traditional “Ham-mer” pants as they danced to his jam and to Hammer’s “Too Legit to Quit.”

One background singer stole the performance, belting semi-high notes as Minaj looked on.

As Bieber won his second award, he was kissed on the neck by Jenny McCarthy, who presented the award. “Wow. I feel violated right now,” he said, laughing.
