Denpasar (Bali Post)Population census (SP) con-

ducted by the Central StatisticsAgency (BPS) in each region, espe-cially in Bali had been started by thefield officers. In fact, the nationalpopulation census should be begunin May 2010. Since its implementa-tion precedes the national schedule, the census officers will be asked toavoid the double counting. Not onlythat, the officers must also ensurethat all citizens living in Bali hadalready been recorded accordingly.

This matter was confirmed by theHead of BPS of the RI Dr. RusmanHeriawan before a number of cen-sus officers in Denpasar, last Sun-day (Apr 18). Rusman Heriawanalong with a number of his staff hadthe opportunity to review and moni-tor the implementation of census atLebah Hamlet, Sumertha Village,East Denpasar.

Rusman Heriawan admitted theconcern related to the existence ofdata distinction between the dataobtained from the census and dataavailable at Civil Registration Of-fice in each region because themechanisms used by the agenciesand offices in each region wasslightly different. BPS collected thedata of residents based on the exist-ence of people at a particular place.Meanwhile, the service of each re-gion had the data based on demo-graphic administration, such as ID

A group of youths who alleged to be civilians assaulted and did vandalism for twotimes, namely last Saturday (Apr 17) and Sunday (Apr 18) early in the morning. In that attack, members of the Mobile Brigade of Bali Police had also warned by shots into the air. As a result, tens of perpetrators consisting of burly men ran helter-skelter.

Previously, the wounded secu-rity officer (Ferdi Hale-ed) was allegedto have been attacked at the entrance. Therefore, before the perpetrators en-tered, the guard had time to try ban-ning them,? he explained.

What was the motive of the inci-dent? There were two versions devel-oped in the field related to the motive.First, the attack was allegedly due tomanagement reshuffle at Sky GardenDiscotheque. Given, other than man-agement reshuffle, there was alsosome security officers discharged.Meanwhile, the second version men-tioned the attack was kindled by therejection where a friend of local secu-rity officer was not allowed to enter.

Hot smokes emanate from theground, Tajun residents turn restless

day, Sutrawan saw the smokes risingfrom the earth. At the beginning, hethought the white smokes were ofcigarette. After investigated further,in fact the smokes emerged from theearth. Sutrawan was very curious sohe dug at the location until the depthof fifty centimeters. In fact, the deeperhe dug, the bigger the smokes ema-nating. More strangely, the deeper hedug the hotter the smokes were.

The emanating smokes from theground were translucent. They wereodorless but hot. Local residentsclaimed to have boiled a chicken eggin a container above the smokes. Asa result, the chicken egg in the water

was cooked. Seeing the incident, thelocal residents reported it to the Headof Kubutambahan subdistrict, MadeSuyasa, who is also a figure of TajunVillage.

Census officers asked toavoid double counting

cards. ?BPS recorded the number ofpopulation based on de facto wherethe residents lives everyday at par-ticular location without consideringwhether they had ID card or not,?he said.

However, such differences couldbe minimized by using the censusdata obtained the activity altogether. Moreover, the enumeration of theexistence of residents through popu-lation census was based on the ex-istence of people living in one area.?This census is conducted with agreat care, so that it could avoid anydouble counting or residents thatwere not enumerated at all,? saidRusman Heriawan last Sunday.

It turned important, he said, inorder to have the same reference ofdemographic data. When the resultsof the census were shared, there wasno difference in terms of numbers. It was a kind of comprehensive ef-fort to address the problem.

Negara (Bali Post)Recently, bad weather often oc-

According to one of the officersin Gilimanuk, the bad weather con-dition made the crossing control of-ficer confused. The heavy rainshowering the Bali Strait could limitthe visibility of the helmsmen so itwas very dangerous for shipping ac-tivities. Meanwhile, strong windsblowing from the south could dragthe ship out of the path.

Like inseparable two sides ofa coin, the extravagance of Balitourism indeed offers the brightside and dull side. The rapid de-velopment of tourism industry isbelieved to have successfully po-sitioned itself as the drivingforces of the Bali?s economy intoa better direction. However, onthe other hand, the developmentof the tourism industry with avariety of supporting industriesundeniably also results in highlydestructive potential of naturaland cultural environment of Bali. For the sake of tourism, every-thing is explored all out so thatBali will slowly but surely loseits identity.

The sweetness of Balitourism?s honey has made the hu-mans sleep soundly and negligentto protect natural and cultural en-vironment truly becoming thecentral point of Bali tourism it-self. When Bali no longer showsoff the original face, what addedvalue could be offered to conjureup foreign tourists in order theykeep on choosing Bali as theirfavorite destination?

Such apprehensiveness andself-criticism soared out in thetourism panel entitled ?How toManage Tourism Benefiting Bali(Nature, Culture and BalineseHuman)? was co-organized byBali Travel News and Interna-tional Bali Post at Griya Santrian,Sanur, last Saturday (Apr 17). Thediscussion lasting for some twohours featured the speakers suchas Gusti Kade Sutawa from KutaExecutive Club, Chairman of theSociety of the Indonesian Profes-sional Convention Organizers(SIPCO) Putu Juarez R Putra,Chairman of the Society of TriHita Karana Gede Suarsa and atourism practitioner IBSurakusuma. The four resourcepersons described a variety ofideas and constructive solutions inorder to maintain the continuity ofBali tourism survival without hav-ing outraged the natural and cul-tural environment of Bali believed

THK conception infringed, tourism potentially harms Bali

as the main pillar of the triumphof tourism in Bali.

IB Surakusuma asserted thebeautiful nature and culture ofBali as well as a decent charac-teristic denoted a good combinedtourist attraction package makingBali develop to become a world?sfavorite tourist destination. Sincetourism had a very strong influ-ence in increasing the Bali?seconomy, the tourism was con-tinuously driven to grow in har-mony with a variety of physicaldevelopment of tourism facilities. If physical development was notwell controlled, the natural envi-ronment of Bali would be ex-ploited indiscriminately.

Genuinely the Tri Hita Karanaconception guiding the Balinese tobecome wise people has no longerbeen obeyed. Like mushroomgrowing in the rainy season, thehotels and tourism facilities ap-peared in numbers everywherewithout paying attention to luan-teben (upper-lower course) con-ception that previously strictly up-held by humans in Bali. ?Just forthe sake of pursuing the blessingsof tourism, people have a tendencyto behave permissively. If contin-ued, it would certainly have anegative impact on the survival ofBali,? he reminded.

A tourism practitioner betterknown as Gus Lolec asserted, theBali tourism must be absolutelymanaged properly and profession-ally, either in the context of pre-serving the environment, culture orBalinese human integrally. In or-der to realize this commitment, ofcourse, it was required a regulatoryinstruments enforced and imple-mented consistently and responsi-bly. ?If the nature, culture and hu-man characteristics of Bali havegone, then Bali is not more thanSingapore. Destination manage-ment touted ever was in the rightdirection and very urgent to beimplemented. Therefore, it nolonger dwells at the level of dis-course,? he asserted.

Similar opinion was expressed

by Gusti Kade Sutawa from KutaExecutive Club. In order to savethe nature, culture and people ofBali integrally against the devel-oping tourism undermining wildly, this General Manager of PuriSaron hotel urged that the Tri HitaKarana concept should be imple-mented consistently and conse-quently. In addition, Bali shouldhave an agency or association car-ing and working in real terms forthe rescue of Bali. ?Ideally, thereis an agency or competent partieshaving the power to control this,?he stated firmly. JERUSALEM – Israel must rec-ognize that the world will not putup with decades more of Israelirule over the Palestinian people, thecountry’s defense minister said inunusually frank remarks Monday.

Ehud Barak’s comments, on theoccasion of Israel’s Memorial Day,come against the backdrop of se-vere friction between the U.S. andIsrael’s hawkish government overan impasse in peacemaking.

Last week, President BarackObama issued a surprisingly pes-simistic assessment of peacemak-ing prospects, saying the U.S.couldn’t force its will on Israelisand Palestinians if they weren’t in-terested in making the compro-mises necessary to end their de-cades-old conflict.

Barak told Israel Radio on Mon-day that Prime Minister BenjaminNetanyahu’s government has“done things that didn’t come natu-rally to it,” like adopting the visionof two states for two peoples andcurtailing settlement construction.

“But we also shouldn’t deludeourselves,” he added. “The grow-ing alienation between us and theUnited States is not good for thestate of Israel.”

The way to narrow that gap is toembark on an Israeli diplomatic ini-tiative “that doesn’t shy from deal-ing with all the core issues” divid-ing Israelis and Palestinians, he said.

The Israeli defense minister dis-missed talk of an imposed U.S. so-lution — an idea that’s been fieldedrecently in Washington.

But he warned that while Israelis militarily strong, it needs inter-national legitimacy as well.

“The world isn’t willing to ac-cept — and we won’t change thatin 2010 — the expectation that Is-rael will rule another people fordecades more,” he said. “It’s some-thing that doesn’t exist anywhereelse in the world.”

Palestinians aspire to a state oftheir own, he said, and “there is noother way, whether you like it or not, than to let them rule themselves.”

Barak heads the Labor Party, theonly political party in Netanyahu’sgovernment that is not consideredhawkish. But in his three years as de-fense minister, Barak has not eventaken down the two dozen settlementsatellites that Israel promised the U.S.it would dismantle in 2003. Dovishcritics have accused him of makingLabor a fig leaf for the Netanyahugovernment’s hawkish policies.

ADELAIDE, Australia – TheU.N. refugee agency expressedconcern Monday that Australia isusing holding newly arrived asy-lum-seekers in detention centers.

The government suspended refu-gee applications from Afghans andSri Lankans on April 9, saying thesituations in those countries hadimproved.

The new policy says the suspen-sions will be reassessed in three tosix months. Until then, new asylum-seekers will be housed in detentioncenters. The government has al-ready been forced to open new cen-ters to cope with an overflow ofarrivals.

But the U.N. said Monday thereshould be alternatives to detentionfor those who posed no security risk.

UNHCR concern as Australia detains asylum-seekers“The combination of mandatory

detention, suspension of asylumclaims and the geographical isola-tion of detention facilities ... allwithout any effective judicial over-sight — is a deeply troubling set offactors,” said Richard Towle of theU.N. refugee agency.

Detention is likely to have anegative impact on the physical andmental health of asylum-seekers,particularly those who have beentortured or traumatized before arriv-ing in Australia, the U.N. said.

It particularly criticized the re-mote location of a new detentioncenter to be opened at Curtin airforce base in the state of WesternAustralia. The federal governmentannounced Sunday that the facility, which had been used for the samepurpose under the previous admin-istration, would house up to 300 Sri

Lankan and Afghan asylum-seekerswhose applications were on hold.

The government is struggling tocope with illegal boatloads of asy-lum-seekers who have filled an off-shore detention center and fueled apolitical debate over immigrationpolicies.

The current government relaxedimmigration regulations in 2008, re-ducing the time would-be refugeesspend in detention before their ap-plications are processed and drop-ping a requirement that they mustrenew visas every five years.

The opposition claims that thosechanges led to the tenfold increasein illegal boat people in 2009 overthe previous year. They say the il-legal arrivals drain money and re-sources and that they should applythrough the established U.N. refu-gee process.

LONDON (AFP) – Britain’s banon flights in its airspace due to thevolcanic ash cloud will remain untilat least 0000 GMT Tuesday, air au-thorities confirmed.

“Conditions around the move-ment of the layers of the volcanic ashcloud over the UK remain dynamic,”the National Air Traffic Services(NATS) said in a statement, addingthat they would update their assess-ment at around 0800 GMT.

“Anyone hoping to travel shouldcontact their airline before travellingto the airport.”

The group said it was keeping inclose contact with the nationalweather service, and the Civil Avia-tion Authority.

Britain keeps flightban in place

The statement added: “We areworking closely with government, airports and airlines, and airframe andaero engine manufacturers to get abetter understanding of the effects ofthe ash cloud and to seek solutions.”

For its part, the Met Office said itwould produce forecasts of the ashcloud four times a day.

“Weather patterns continue toblow volcanic ash towards the UK,”it said.

“Over the weekend, Met Officeobservations have detected dust inthe atmosphere and on the ground.A research aircraft has recently en-countered dust during its flight.”

The service said it would be“looking for weather windows thatwill allow air space restrictions to belifted”.

“I’m worried about the force allo-cation pattern here. It looks greaterthan necessary for just guarding theSilom area,” said a protest leader,Nattawut Saikua. “They are making itinto a killing field.”

Another protest leader, WengTojirakarn, said there had never beenany intention to penetrate into Silom.“Some people might have mentionedit, but it’s merely a personal opinion,”he said.

The Red Shirts claim BangkokBank has close ties to the government. They have protested in front of thebuilding previously on a smaller scale.

Earlier in the morning, soldiers alsopatrolled one of the city’s most famoussex-bar strips, Patpong Road, and anentertainment area for Japanese tour-ists, which are just off Silom.

Some took positions atop buildingsafter searching for possible snipers andalong a skywalk running several hun-dred meters (yards) above the road.Others guarded bank buildings, ATMmachines and entrances to subway andoverhead rail entrances.

A number of those returning towork on Silom after the long Thai NewYear holidays expressed support forthe troops.

“I’m opposed to the idea of thedemonstrators entering Silom. Every-thing will collapse. The economy willcollapse,” said Kritsana Chumkong, a38-year-old office worker.

The government accuses “terror-ists” armed with guns and other weap-ons of orchestrating the earlier vio-lence and says weapons were stolenfrom the military that have not beenreturned.

The protesters consist mainly ofpoor rural supporters of former PrimeMinister Thaksin Shinawatra and pro-democracy activists who opposed themilitary coup that ousted him in 2006.

They believe Abhisit heads an ille-gitimate government because it cameto power through a parliamentary voteafter disputed court rulings ousted twoelected, pro-Thaksin administrations. The conflict has been characterized bysome as class warfare, pitting the

Armed Thai...From page 1 country’s vast rural poor against an

elite that has traditionally held power.A main target of the Red Shirts has

been Gen. Prem Tinsulanonda, whothe loyalists say was a key leader inthe military coup.

Prem is the president of the PrivyCouncil, which advises the Thai king, and also serves as an adviser to theBangkok Bank, one of the largest inThailand.

The protesters claim that Premhelped arrange financing through theBangkok Bank for a golf course thatencroached on the Khao Soi Dao Wild-life Sanctuary in southeastern Thai-land. That allegation, plus other accu-sations of shady business deals be-tween Prem and the bank, have beendenied.

Abhisit has come under increasingcriticism for failing to clear the pro-testers, but the government spokesmansaid Saturday there were no immedi-ate plans for a crackdown because toomany people were camped in the areato use force.

The Red Shirt protesters, formallyknown as the United Front for Democ-racy against Dictatorship, want Abhisitto dissolve Parliament and call newelections. They were initially campedin a historic district of Bangkok, and afailed attempt by security forces onApril 10 to flush protesters from thatneighborhood erupted into the worstpolitical violence Thailand has seen in18 years.

At least 25 people were killed, in-cluding senior military officers. Morethan 800 people were wounded, in-cluding about 300 soldiers.

Since then, the protesters have con-solidated in Bangkok’s main shoppingarea, raising the stakes as they scareoff tourists and rattle the stock mar-ket. Retailers and hotels say they havelost tens of millions of dollars.

Police have issued 24 arrest war-rants for Red Shirt leaders accusedof inciting violence, but so far nonehas been arrested. An attempt to ar-rest one leader Friday was thwartedwhen he climbed over a hotel bal-cony and was lowered by rope to acrowd of fellow Red Shirts, whohelped him escape.

In accordance with coastal villagers, black moonfalling around March is an auspicious time. Why?Because villagers will welcome the coming of tiny fishlocally known as ipun or teri nasi in Bahasa Indonesia. These herds of fish are just born in the waves and theylead to river streams. BALI - Indonesia should build domestic connectivity ina bid to step up competitiveness and economic growth,Coordinating Minister for Economy Hatta Rajasa said hereon Monday.

“Before developing regional connectivity in SoutheastAsia, Indonesia should first build domestic connectivityto step up its competitiveness and economic growth,” HattaRajasa said in his presentation at national coordinatingmeeting with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono atTampak Siring Palace here on Monday.

According to him, connectivity building in the nextfive years should be accompanied with infrastructure de-velopment because it was part of the 2015 ASEAN Com-munity plan.

Hatta added that to step up competitive power and in-frastructure development, the government should alsoimprove the work force because its dependency ratio hasdropped in the past 15 years.

“Supported by the improvement in economic growthin East Asian countries, the work force in in South Koreaand Japan has started to improve,” Hatta Rajasa said.

He explained that in its next four-year developmentprogram, the government would also go ahead with sus-tainable development with green development which progrowth, pro poor, and pro job.

“Therefore we have to make efficiency for the sake ofenergy development and waste management in infrastruc-ture development,” Hatta Rajasa said, adding that it wasalso part of the United Indonesia Cabinet II program to buildan inclusive, sustainable, and fair economy.

Connectivity needed to improve competitivenessgrowth would reach 7 percent, and unemployment rate 5-6percent with an income per capita of US$4,500.

Present in the meeting were all cabinet ministers, gover-nors, provincial legislative councils (DPRD) chairmen, stateenterprises (BUMN) leaders, and state institution officials.

It will focus on four things concerning Indonesia’s eco-nomic development over the next five years, an evaluationof pro-people programs, law enforcement and justice forthe people, and efforts to achieve the Millennium Develop-ment Goals (MDGs) by 2015.

Except for various mouth-watering foods, Balinesecommunity also has a treasure of delicious cakes.Among those cakes, some are made for oblations, whilesome others for consumption. One of them is mancacake. This dry cake can be used to fill oblation andconsumed as refreshment.

At glance, it resembles to a large-sized tablet. Sincethe inner part is spongy makes it feel so light. It is justlike a rice chip sprinkled with rich of red and white ricegrains as can be found on gipang cakes. On the firstbite, it will taste rather crunchy and very sweet. BERLIN - Germany tempo-rarily re-opened six airports shutbecause of volcanic ash, before an-nouncing fresh closures at all buttwo of them until 2:00 am Mon-day (0000 GMT).

Takeoffs and landings at allairports including Frankfurt, oneof Europe’s busiest hubs, wouldcease at 8:00 pm (1800 GMT),except at Berlin Tegel and BerlinSchoenefeld, the air safety agencyDFS said Sunday.

At the German capital’s twoairports in eastern Germany, flightswould continue until 10:00 pm Sun-day and a decision would be takenshortly before then on whether theycould continue to operate, a DFSspokesman said.

Earlier, six airports — Erfurt,Leipzig and Hanover plus Frankfurtand Berlin’s two airports — werere-opened for limited operations.Which flights were allowed de-pended on their intended direction.

The authorisation followed aweather forecast from the VolcanicAsh Advisory Centre in London, one of six centres worldwide set upby the International Civil AviationOrganisation, the DFS said.

A ban on all flights in Ger-man airspace had paralysed all air-ports in Europe’s biggest economy.

At Frankfurt temporary bedshad been set up for some 700 tran-sit passengers unable to leave theairport, while blankets and coldand hot food were distributed.

Tens of thousands of Ger-man hol idaymakers werestranded worldwide, unable to flyhome. Tour operators laid oncoaches to bus tourists homefrom Spain, while in Germanyrail operator Deutsche Bahn pro-vided extra trains.

Achieving this would require theregion’s energy guzzlers to invest anextra 80 billion dollars a year to makepower, industry and transport sectorsmore efficient and develop renewableenergy, the World Bank said.

Success also depends on the re-gion finding the political will for bigchanges as well as transfers of financ-ing and technologies from developedcountries, the Washington-based lendersaid in a regional energy report.

“Major investments in energy ef-ficiency and a concerted switch to re-newable sources of power... could si-multaneously stabilise greenhouse gasemissions, increase energy securitywhile improving local environments,”the report said.

But the World Bank warned timewas running out and urgedpolicymakers in energy-hungry China,Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines,Thailand and Vietnam to act quickly.

Lufthansa and Air Berlin,Germany’s two biggest airlines, joined other airlines in questioningthe lock-down, saying it was notbased on proper testing and thattheir aircraft were undamaged afterflying through the ash.

“Not one single weather bal-loon has been sent up to measurehow much volcanic ash is in the air,”Air Berlin chief executive JoachimHunold told the Bild am Sonntagnewspaper.

Lufthansa spokesman KlausWalter told Bild: “The flight ban, made on the basis just of computercalculations, is resulting in billion-high losses for the economy.

“In future we demand that re-liable measurements are presentedbefore a flying ban is imposed.”

Lufthansa flew 10 aircraft —without passengers — from Frank-furt to Munich on Saturday,Lufthansa spokesman WolfgangWeber told AFP. Air Berlin flewthree flights.

“The planes were analysed andshow no signs of damage, not eventhe slightest scratch on the cockpitglass, the fuselage or the engines,”Weber said.

Peter Ramsauer, traffic minis-ter, rejected the criticism, tellingBild that any other decision but toclose German airspace would havebeen “irresponsible”.

Germany’s national researchcentre for aeronautics and space(DLR) said that scientists wouldtake to the skies on Monday to mea-sure the ash at heights of up to10,000 metres.

BEIJING - East Asia could stabilise its greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 while maintainingeconomic growth by investing heavily in energy efficiency and low-carbon technologies, the WorldBank said Monday.

tries are taking steps in these directions, accelerating the speed and scaling upthe efforts are needed to get on to a sus-tainable energy path,” it said.

“The window of opportunity isclosing fast, because delaying actionwould lock the region into a long-last-ing high-carbon infrastructure.”

If countries act, regional carbonemissions could stabilize by 2025 andbegin to decline, said the bank, whichprovides financial and technical aid todeveloping nations.

It said carbon emissions could belimited to 9.2 gigatonnes a year by 2030— 37 percent lower than the WorldBank’s estimated level if governmentsstick to their current climate changepolicies.

Achieving the target dependslargely on China, which accounts for80 percent of energy consumption and85 percent of regional carbon emis-sions, it said.

The world’s third-largest

economy will need to reduce its car-bon emissions as a percentage of eco-nomic growth by an even greater mar-gin than currently planned, the banksaid.

It called that a “daunting goal,”given that China is still a developingcountry relying on energy-intensive,heavy-polluting industries.

It also noted that major policy andinstitutional reforms as well as biglifestyle changes would be neededthroughout the region to achieve thegoal.

“Developing countries will needto avoid the carbon-intensive path andwasteful lifestyles followed by indus-trial countries in the past,” the bank said.

On the upside, the shift to cleanenergy offered developing countries thechance to “leap-frog to the next gen-eration of new technologies, create lo-cal manufacturing industries to drivedown costs and become global tech-nology leaders.”

percent and set a minimum 30 per-cent deposit on first homes biggerthan 90 square metres (970 squarefeet).

The latest moves highlightgrowing concern in China that theproperty market is overheating, af-ter prices in major cities rose 11.7percent year-on-year last month, the fastest since the survey waswidened to 70 cities in July 2005.

The State Council also re-newed a pledge last week to rein inrunaway prices by increasing thesupply of land for construction, ac-celerating the building of affordablehousing and cracking down onspeculative activity.

But Royal Bank of Canada se-nior analyst Brian Jackson said themeasures would not be as effectiveas higher interest rates.

“I have very strong doubts thatis going to be enough to get the re-sults they want in terms of slowing

down the property market and even-tually they will have to use blunterinstruments,” Jackson told AFP.

China is trying various waysto prevent the growth of assetbubbles as the nation’s economysurges — it grew 11.9 percent in thefurther three months of the year —and keep a lid on inflation.

Beijing has been clampingdown on bank lending which hasbeen blamed for fuelling speculativeinvestment in the property sector.

Policymakers have raisedbank reserve ratios twice this year— effectively limiting the amountbanks can lend — and increased in-terest rates on benchmark three-month and one-year Treasury bills.

Analysts have forecast inter-est rate hikes as early as this monthas well as a loosening of exchangerate policy, which has effectivelypegged the yuan to the dollar sincemid-2008.

“Scientists are discovering and de-scribing an astonishing new world ofmarine microbial diversity and abun-dance, distribution patterns and sea-sonal changes,” said Mitch Sogin of theMarine Biological Laboratory inWoods Hole, Mass., leader of the In-ternational Census of Marine Microbes. The Census of Marine Life, which isscheduled to be reported Oct. 4 in Lon-don, has involved more than 2,000 sci-entists from more than 80 nations.

The decade-long census has dis-covered more than 5,000 new formsof marine life. Researchers thinkthere may be several times that manyyet to be found.

Previous updates have focused onlarger creatures, such as a city ofbrittle stars off the coast of NewZealand, an Antarctic expresswaywhere octopuses ride along in a flowof extra salty water, the deepestcomb jellyfish ever found and TheWhite Shark Cafe, a deep PacificOcean site where sharks congregatein winter. Now the researchers haveturned to the tiniest of things, someof which burrow in the sea floor.Remotely operated deep-sea ve-hicles discovered that roundwormsdominate the deepest, darkest abyss.Sometimes, more than 500,000 canexist in just over a square yard of softclay. Only a few different types havebeen studied.

WASHINGTON – If the Census Bureau thinks it has its hands full counting Americans, imagine what scientistsare up against in trying to tally every living thing in the ocean, including microbes so small they seem invisible. Andjust try to get them to mail back a form. The worldwide Census of Marine Life has four field projects focusing onhard-to-see sea life such as tiny microbes, zooplankton, larvae and burrowers in the sea bed. Tiny as individuals, these life forms are massive as groups and provide food that helps underpin better-known living things.

There are also 16,000 or morespecies of seaworms. There areloriciferans, which the scientists call“girdle wearers” because of hindshells resembling a corset. And thereare hundreds of types of tiny crusta-ceans. “Such findings make us lookat the deep sea from a new perspec-tive,” says researcher Pedro MartinezArbizu of the German Center forMarine Biodiversity Research. “Farfrom being a lifeless desert, the deepsea rivals such highly diverse eco-systems as tropical rainforests andcoral reefs.” Consider zooplankton, the tiny, often transparent animalsthat some call sea bugs. They form avital link in the food chain.

As of 2004, scientists had identi-fied about 7,000 species of zoop-lankton. Now they expect that todouble when they finish analyzingall the samples collected in the ma-rine census. Improved techniquessuch as DNA analysis have helpedunravel some errors along the way.DNA, of course, is the genetic codein the cells of each living creature.Tracey Sutton of the Virginia Insti-tute of Marine Science and col-leagues led by the SmithsonianInstitution’s G. David Johnson usedgenetics to show that three types offish thought to be different are re-ally one. They found that eventhough they look different, the

Mirapinnidae (tapetails),Megalomycteridae (bignose fishes)and Cetomimidae (whalefishes) arereally the same species. The tapetailsare the larvae and when they growup they become either the bignoses(girls) or the wehalefish (boys).

After studying samples takenfrom more than 1,000 sites, scien-tists concluded there may be as manyas 100 times more microbe generain the sea than they had thought. In-deed, a 2007 study in the EnglishChannel alone yielded 7,000 newgenera of microorganisms. Genus isthe category of life ranked betweenfamily and species. For example themammal family has many genera, such as homo (humans), canis (dogs)and equus (horse). What ocean mi-crobes lack in size they make up forin numbers. Marine census research-ers calculate there are a “nonillion”of them. Never heard of nonillion?Well, it’s a lot. It’s 1,000 times 1 bil-lion, times 1 billion, times 1 billion.

Of course no one can really envi-sion a number like that, so the re-searchers turned to the popular com-parison measure — the African el-ephant. A nonillion microbe cells, they say, is about the same weightas 240 billion African elephants —or the equivalent of 35 elephants forevery person on Earth. And that’sjust the microbes.

GENEVA – Europeans shouldtry to stay indoors if ash fromIceland’s volcano starts settling, theWorld Health Organization warnedFriday as small amounts fell in Ice-land, Scotland and Norway.

WHO spokesman Daniel Epsteinsaid the microscopic ash is poten-tially dangerous for people when itstarts to reach the Earth becauseinhaled particles can enter the lungsand cause respiratory problems.

“We’re very concerned about it,”Epstein said. “These particles wheninhaled can reach the peripheral re-gions of ... the lungs and can causeproblems — especially for peoplewith asthma or respiratory prob-lems.” He also said Europeans whogo outside might want to considerwearing a mask.

Other experts, however, weren’tconvinced the volcanic ash wouldhave a major effect on peoples’health and said WHO’s warningswere “hysterical.” They said volca-

Experts differ on health risk of volcanic ashnic ash was much less dangerousthan cigarette smoke or pollution.

Volcanic ash is made of fine par-ticles of fragmented volcanic rock.It is light gray to black and can be asfine as talcum powder. During a vol-canic eruption, the ash can bebreathed deep into the lungs andcause irritation even in healthypeople. But once it falls from agreater distance — like from thecloud currently hovering above Eu-rope — its health effects are oftenminimal, experts say.

The Icelandic volcano thaterupted Wednesday has sent an enor-mous cloud of microscopic basaltash particles across northern Europe, grounding aircraft across continent. It is drifting above 20,000 feet (6,000

meters), high and invisible from theground.

“Not all particles are createdequal,” said Ken Donaldson, a pro-fessor of respiratory toxicology atthe University of Edinburgh, whohas studied the impact of volcanicash in people. “In the great schemeof things, volcanic ash is not all thatharmful.”

Donaldson said most Europeans’exposure to volcanic ash would benegligible and that only those in thenear vicinity of the Icelandic volcanowould likely be at risk.

“Once the volcanic particles arein the stratosphere, they’re gettingmassively diluted because there’s alot of air and other particles blow-ing around,” he said.

But although teams may have dif-ficulties in getting personnel back tobase swiftly, with cars and equipmentlikely to be delayed too, Ecclestoneis sure that the Spanish GP will goahead as planned. “I am sure every-thing will be all right,” saidEcclestone in Shanghai. “There is noquestion of cancelling the SpanishGrand Prix. Of course, it is causingeverybody problems, but we will finda way to get everyone home.”

F1’s cars will not be able to returnto the team’s factories until the freightplanes that carry them can get out ofEurope, where they are currentlytrapped. If the flight delays continuefor a few more days then it is possiblethe F1 freight could be shipped directlyto Barcelona. And with the prospectof it taking weeks to sort commercialaircraft timetables out once Europeanairspace is open again, F1 teams areworking hard to ensure that their staffcan get back to base quickly.

A number of outfits, includingFerrari, McLaren and Lotus, havechartered their own aircraft to takepersonnel back to Europe. McLarenteam principal Martin Whitmarshsaid: “McLaren committed this morn-

McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh thinkshis team needs to push ‘very hard’ to improve its car ifit is going to keep its advantage at the head of the worldchampionship. After a brilliant 1-2 finish for JensonButton and Lewis Hamilton, McLaren grabbed the leadin both points tables and left early-season pace-settersRed Bull Racing and Ferrari ruing the missed opportu-nities of the opening flyaway races.

But despite wining two of the first four races,Whitmarsh thinks that McLaren must improve the speedof its car - especially in qualifying terms – if it is goingto catch up with Red Bull in particular. “We need todevelop our car quicker than the others,” Whitmarshtold AUTOSPORT. “I think Barcelona is a challenge. Iam sure the teams are going to step up with upgradeson the car, and we have to push very hard to see if wecan go there with a bigger step than the others. I think

Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone is convinced that thetravel crisis caused by the exploding Icelandic volcano poses nothreat to next month’s Spanish Grand Prix taking place. Withthe majority of the F1 circus trapped in Shanghai following thecancellation of flights back to Europe, questions have emergedabout whether the Barcelona race on May 6 will escape the travelchaos that has already forced MotoGP organisers to postponetheir next round in Motegi this weekend.

ing to a charter plane for Wednesdayto fly to Spain. We were the first tocommit to that and have said that if itis a big enough plane then anyone elsecan come on board. “We took the flyerand said that if it is half empty thenwe will bear the premium, so as longas we have got our team on it then weare happy for it to be full. I think someteams were hesitating this morning butthey are now jumping on board prettyquick. Hopefully, as Spain is about theonly place you can fly into, we canget them into Spain on Wednesday andonto coaches for Santander or roadroute home.”

Ferrari team principal StefanoDomenicali added: “Everyone is wait-ing to see what is going on. On thematerial side we know that either wemove all the stuff, or we keep it here.So either we do another race here orwe move altogether back to Europe!“Everyone is waiting to see the updatesand at the moment I would say thenormal flights we are booked on aretotally closed. To wait means we waithere for one week or 10 days, I don’tknow, but we are trying also to see ifwe can organise ourselves another wayof moving through a charter flight.

Whitmarsh says McLaren needs big pushin racing we are closer to the Red Bulls. In qualifyingwe are still behind the Red Bull. They are the fastest inqualifying and this is a development race now. We havegiven ourselves the foundation at the flyaways, but weare back into Europe.”

“We now have to really push hard and keep reli-ability, which you cannot take for granted, keep racingwell and keep developing the car. If we do that we canwin these championships. That is what we have got totry and do.” Whitmarsh has also praised the efforts ofhis team and drivers in helping deliver such a healthynumber of points in the first races of the year. “It istestament to the team and the drivers,” he said aboutthe fact his team was leading the championship despitenot having the quickest overall car. “I think here in quali-fying we had the second fastest car. I think here wewere slower still than Red Bull. I think weunderperformed in qualifying and didn’t make it easyfor ourselves.”

“We are a race team, I think we are not a bad raceteam. We don’t always get it right, but we make deci-sions and we get on with it. We have two drivers whoare great racers. They are part of the team and havemade a massive contribution, and I think the team as awhole has worked together to try and get the maximumnumber of points we can.” When asked whether Button’sgreat start to the year had surprised him, he said: “Idon’t think so. It is not surprise. Jenson has done a fan-tastic job with the team, and I think he is a mature worldchampion with a lot of experience. He has had sometough times in his career and has clearly learned fromit. How he has conducted himself in the team, how hehas formed a relationship with Lewis, how he operatesout on the track is just fantastic. Here we are, four racesin and he has won two of them.”

McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarshthinks his team needs to push ‘very hard’ toimprove its car if it is going to keep its advan-tage at the head of the world championship
