Drawing an overwhelmingly female and African-American audience, “The Best Man Holiday” was a surprise challenger for the mighty “Thor.” The R-rated romantic comedy, with an en-semble cast including Morris Chestnut and Taye Diggs, debuted with more than three times the box office of 1999’s “The Best Man.” That film opened with $9 million.

The performance of director Malcolm D. Lee’s “The Best Man Holiday” contin-ued an ongoing trend. Movies that appeal particularly to black audiences have often been surpassing expectations at the box office. “It’s a familiar refrain, and it’s get-

ting a little tired,” said Lee. “I thought we had a chance to do something special.”

“Lee Daniels’ The Butler” led the box office for several weeks in August, lead-ing to a cumulative total of $115.5 mil-lion domestically. The Oscar-contender “12 Years a Slave” has made $25 million in five weeks of limited release.

Lee said that while black audiences “see everything” at the movies, from action movies to romantic comedies, he hopes broader audiences begin re-sponding to so-called “black films.” The audience for “Best Man Holiday” was 87 percent African-American. Regardless, a third “Best Man” film now seems a likely

bet. “If there is going to be a sequel, it won’t take 14 years,” granted Lee.

Marvel’s Norse superhero, however, has been hammering audiences around the globe. “Thor: The Dark World” made $52.5 million internationally over the weekend, bringing its worldwide total to $479.8 million. With Chris Hemsworth as the title character and Tom Hiddleston as the popular villain Loki, the Thor fran-chise has proven to be one of Marvel’s most successful.

Just as “Thor” approached the half-billion mark, Warner Bros.’ space adven-ture “Gravity” crossed it in its seventh week of release.

TOKYO — The director of the Keanu Reeves 3-D film “47 Ronin” says he hopes his adaptation of a true Japanese story becomes a Holly-wood blockbuster. Film director Carl Rinsch, Reeves and co-stars appeared together in front of a Tokyo audience on Monday.

The film is based on an ac-tual historical event during the Edo Period known as

“Chushingura.” It involved a lord who was wrong-fully put to death and his followers — ronin — who sought revenge.

Rinsch said he took on the film sub-ject and sat down with Keanu Reeves

about two years ago. They won-dered how they were going to take on a popu-lar Japanese tale and do it justice.

Rinsch said they decided to make

the story their own, making “it a Hol-lywood blockbuster and see it through that lens.”

“These themes of revenge, loyalty, perseverance, were things we knew from the very beginning were univer-sal,” said Rinsch, who is making his directorial feature debut with the film.

Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada stars as the main supporting character, Kuranosuke Oishi, a leader of the men. Sanada said that during the filming Reeves became more and more of a samurai, while the character he played became more “wild” in style.

Sanada said Reeves and himself hoped to depict the friendship of two characters, which transcended borders and social positions, in the film.

Reeves said “47 Ronin” is a story where people “share this journey to reclaim their land, their honor, their way. It was very special to me to be part of it.”

Reeves, who grew up attracted to martial arts movies, makes his directo-rial debut this year with the martial arts action movie “Man of Tai Chi.” The film “47 Ronin” premiers in Japan on Dec. 6 and opens in U.S. theaters on Dec. 25.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

BEING a regent in Buleleng County or a chief of customary village as well as the official of Tri Datu in Buleleng customary village in fact has a unique obligation. The officials should naur palebuh or present a pig or buffalo in the village temple of Buleleng customary village.

Interestingly, the oblation should be presented after the officials died. By all means, it will be presented by the descendants of the officials. The obligation set forth in bylaw of customary village applies to the regent of Buleleng origi-nating from anywhere, either from Buleleng or beyond Buleleng. The regent and chief of customary village are required to present a buffalo. Meanwhile, Tri Datu officials or equivalent position should deliver a black pig weighing about 80 to 100 kilogram.

On full moon of the fifth month in Balinese calendar, Sunday (Nov 17) was held a naur palebuh ritual in the form of pig by 32 descendants of former Tri Datu officials in Buleleng customary village that had died. Each of those descendants of the former officials presented a pig in the ritual so there were totally 32 pigs.

Naur palebuh ritual procession was carried out from 08:00 a.m. Originally, the residents presenting the naur palebuh and other residents gathered with the apparatus of Buleleng customary village at Catus Pata, right on the intersection of Jalan Veteran and Jalan Gajah Mada Singaraja. From the intersection, the pigs were paraded on foot to village temple. Once arriving at village temple, those pigs were paraded again around the temple for three times. It was then resumed with the worship en masse. After saying prayers, the pigs were slaughtered and the pork was distributed to residents. Besides, some portions of the pork were also taken by the descendants of former officials as a means of ritual to be presented in the family temple or clan temple.

Chief of Buleleng customary village, Nyoman Sutrisna, said the naur pale-buh ritual had become a tradition and set forth in the local customary bylaw or awig-awig. It was mentioned that one becoming the regent of Buleleng was mandatory to present a naur palebuh ritual in the form of buffalo after the death or cremated. Similar obligation also applies for the chief of Buleleng customary village to do naur palebuh in the form of buffalo. Meanwhile, the Tri Datu officials were mandatory to present a pig. “If any former officers or former regent who has not done their naur palebuh ritual, we always remind their offspring,” he said. The Head of Tabanan Culture and Tourism Agency, Wayan Adnyana, justified the restriction against the visit to Subak Mu-seum. He explained there were several considerations for such restrictions. One of them was waiting for the discussion on the repairs for the damaged museum. “Based on the study made by the Public Works, only exhibition space was declared relatively safe to visit. So, we can only open this part for public visit,” he said, Sunday (Nov 17).

As observation of Bali Post, after the closure the visitors to the museum located near the Tabanan town was dominated by students and pupils. They tended to observe the agricultural heri-tage on display in the museum space. A number of foreign tour-ists from various countries also made a visit to the museum. “It’s reasonable that visitor increased after the re-opening. However, they were mostly pupils and students majoring in engineer-

ing,” said one of the museum attendants.

Previously, three students of SDK Immaculata elementary school, Tabanan, got injured due to a falling revetment of museum area on September 27. Such incident occurred when dozens of students were fol-lowing a field study to subak museum. After the incident, the Regent of Tabanan Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti temporarily closed the museum activity. Status of the museum was belonging to Bali government. However, the management was delegated to the Tabanan County. The nearly complete skeletons are described as the “Dueling Dinosaurs.” The sellers say the dinosaurs — one a plant eater, the other a meat eater — appear to be locked in mortal combat.

They’re being sold as one lot at Bonhams auction house on Tuesday. The sellers believe one may be a close relative of Tyrannosaurus rex. The other may be a new spe-cies similar to Triceratops.

They hope a philanthropist buys them and donates them to a public institution.

Zurab Zhvania’s death was attributed to accidental carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a faulty gas heater, but his brother has accused Saakashvili of hiding the truth.

ROME — Stung by a party schism, former Italian Premier Sil-vio Berlusconi on Saturday invited defectors to join in an alliance with his center-right power base, a bid that could help boost the media mogul’s leadership prospects.

Berlusconi abandoned the char-acteristic defiance he has shown after previous stinging setbacks by reaching out to Deputy Premier Angelino Alfano to try to forge a political alliance to oppose his enemies on the left.

The ex-premier blames his many troubles, including a looming ban on seeking election following a tax fraud conviction, on a judiciary he claims sympathizes with the left. Such a ban would still allow him to lead a political party.

Premier Enrico Letta’s center-left Democratic Party is the lead partner in an unusual, 6-month-old governing coalition with Berlusco-ni’s center-right forces. Whether the schism in Berlusconi’s Free-dom People fold will have reper-cussions on Italy’s fragile govern-ment, which has been struggling to pull the country out of a persistent recession, wasn’t immediately clear.

Alfano, who also serves as interior minister in Letta’s govern-ment, called a news conference for later Saturday.

On Friday evening, Alfano announced he was splitting from Berlusconi to form his own New Center-Right party.

In his first public comments about the schism an emotional Berlusconi told supporters that Alfano’s decision deeply pains him and that he “didn’t sleep last night.” Berlusconi described the split as going against his “vision of uniting all the moderates, who, if they were all together, would be the majority of the electorate.”

Still, he urged his followers not to criticize Alfano’s new party.

“This group, even if for now it looks like it is (ending up) sup-porting the left, must necessarily be part of the coalition of moder-ates,” Berlusconi said. “We must treat them as we now treat” other key allies on the right, including the anti-Europe Northern League and a small right-wing party.

Berlusconi said failure for the center-right to pull together would have dire consequences for Italy. If the next government should exclude his forces, “I believe many of us won’t stick around to live in Italy...but be forced to expatriate.”

Fellow senators must decide in an approaching vote to strip him of his Senate seat because of the tax fraud conviction, which was upheld by Italy’s top court in August. He also faces a separate, two-year ban on holding or run-ning for public office linked to the tax fraud conviction.

The prospect of the Senate showdown, scheduled for Nov. 27, has sparked disarray among Berlusconi’s forces.

Last month, his top deputies, led by Alfano, balked at his order to bring down Letta’s government in a no-confidence vote in what was essentially seen as an act of sabotage by a Berlusconi enraged that Letta’s party would vote against his staying in the Senate.

Separately, Berlusconi also risks a lifetime ban on holding public office if he loses his bid in appeals courts to overturn a conviction for allegedly paying a minor for sex and later using his office while premier to try to cover up the purported sexual relation-ship with the teenage girl.

SYDNEY - Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce has demanded the government halt what he described as a “virtual takeover” of Virgin Australia by foreign airlines, saying they were working to destabilise the national carrier.

Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand and Abu Dhabi-based Etihad already own 63 percent of Qantas’ main domestic rival and under a Aus$350 million (US$328 million) capital raising announced last week, that could increase to as much as 72 percent.

In a searing letter to Prime Minister Tony Abbott and all state governments, seen by the Australian Financial Review, Joyce charged it was the “final act” by “predatory” state-owned airlines to cripple Qantas both domestically and internationally.

Joyce’s ultimate fear is that the capital raising, “supported and largely underwritten by three foreign governments’’, was part of a strategy of subsidising Virgin so it could continue to undercut Qantas on profitable domestic routes.

The domestic sector is a key money spinner for the airline and it has helped prop up its underperforming international network. In his letter, Joyce said the move by the three airlines had “all the characteristics of predator behaviour (to) substantially weaken a major competitor, Qantas Group, and recoup the costs at a later date”, the newspaper reported.

Qantas confirmed in a statement Monday that a letter had been sent “to express concerns, as the national carrier, about potentially damaging shifts in Australia’s aviation industry”.

“Virgin Australia’s proposed capital raising could see its foreign ownership rise to more than 80 percent without the need for any further regulatory approval,” the statement said.

“Despite this, the airline would retain all the traffic rights given to Australian carriers.

“If wholly privatised, Virgin Australia’s ability to receive potentially unlimited capital from its government-backed own-ers would seriously distort the domestic aviation market for the benefit of foreign interests.

“The decision of these shareholders to invest in Virgin Aus-tralia’s loss-making strategy highlights that these airlines aren’t subject to the same commercial realities as Qantas.”

It demanded Canberra “fully examine the motives behind the virtual takeover of Virgin Australia by foreign airlines, and to prevent destabilising of the domestic aviation industry, local tourism and jobs”.

Qantas said the situation was compounded by the disadvan-tage it experienced from the restrictions imposed by the Qantas Sale Act when it was privatised in 1995, which limits foreign ownership in the national carrier to 49 percent.

Joyce said the government should urgently revisit the “out-dated policy framework”.

The Australian and International Pilots Association backed Joyce, arguing the playing field has become skewed due to the rising influence of foreign government-controlled investment in the market.

“Qantas is an iconic Australian company and has been a massive contributor to our national employment, skills base and economy for the better part of a century. Allowing it to be white-anted by an unfair competitive environment is not in the national interest,” AIPA president Nathan Safe said.

Treasurer Joe Hockey has not responded publicly to Qantas’ claims but Virgin chief John Borghetti hit back, saying the airline’s emergence had ended a monopoly in the Australian market.

“Fundamentally the landscape has changed forever, and it is no longer a monopoly,’’ he told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“This is all about competition and the creation of more jobs, and helping the tourism sector, which in the current global climate certainly can use all the help it can get.”

The biennial event, held from November 20 to December 1, fea-tures domestic makers of passenger cars, commercial vehicles and trucks alongside most of their European competitors.

A total of 177 exhibitors, includ-ing parts suppliers, from a dozen countries will be part of the event’s 43rd edition.

But US-based automakers, which have not attended since before the global financial crisis, are staying away again, as are South Korean producers, with the exception of Hyundai.

Toyota, the world’s biggest auto-maker, will be among the major firms at the show, after recovering from a series of crises in recent years includ-ing the global meltdown, Japan’s quake-tsunami disaster and the recall of millions of vehicles. The recalls badly dented Toyota’s reputation for safety and quality.

A policy blitz under Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has helped stoke optimism over the economy as the yen slumped, boost-

ing the profits of major exporters including Toyota.

However, Japan’s number-two auto-maker Nissan, part-owned by France’s Renault, has chopped its earnings outlook with its bid to tap emerging markets yet to reap big rewards.

A recent management shuffle also stoked questions about confidence in the leadership of long-time Nissan chief executive Carlos Ghosn.

The big European firms will have a close eye on boosting their presence in the world’s third-largest car market after China and the United States.

SYDNEY - Australian spy agencies attempted to listen in to the phone calls of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and also targeted his wife and senior ministers, reports said Monday.

Secret documents leaked by US whistleblower Edward Snowden, obtained by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and The Guardian newspaper, name the president and nine of his inner circle as targets of the surveillance.

The revelations emerge as bilateral ties between the strategic allies are already strained over previous spying allegations and over how to deal with boatpeople heading for Australia via Indonesia.

The documents show that Australia’s electronic intelligence agency, the Defence Signals Directorate, tracked Yudhoyono’s activity on his mobile phone for 15 days in August 2009, when Labor’s Kevin Rudd was prime minister.

A list of targets also includes Vice President Boediono, who was in Australia last week, former vice president Yussuf Kalla, the foreign affairs spokesman, the security minister and the information minister, the reports said.

The ABC said one of the documents was titled “3G impact and update” and appeared to chart attempts by Australian intelligence to keep pace with the rollout of 3G technology in Indonesia and across Southeast Asia.

A number of intercept options were listed and a recommendation was made to choose one of them and to apply it to a target -- in this case the Indonesian leadership, the broadcaster said.

The latest release of Snowden documents comes just weeks after reports claimed Canberra’s overseas diplomatic posts, including in Jakarta, were involved in a vast US-led surveillance network, which sparked an angry reaction from Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa.

This was followed by The Guardian reporting earlier this month that Australia and the United States mounted a joint surveillance operation on close neighbour Indonesia during 2007 UN climate talks in Bali.

Mount Sinabung on western Su-matra island, which has been erupt-ing on and off since mid-September, shot volcanic ash around 8,000 metres (26,000 feet) into the air, the Geological Disaster Mitigation and Volcanology Centre said.

“The transport ministry is redi-recting flights away from a certain path because of Mount Sinabung’s latest eruption,” ministry spokes-man Bambang Ervan said in a statement.

It also meant that more than 5,000 people who had recently been

evacuated from the area around Sinabung due to its eruptions were unable to return home.

On the main island of Java, Indonesia’s most active volcano, Mount Merapi, spewed a column of ash and smoke some 2,000 metres (6,500 feet) in the morning, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, chief of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency.

He said the eruption, which was triggered by small earthquakes, prompted around 600 families to rush to evacuation posts but they

were returning home as there was no imminent threat.

Mount Merapi killed more than 350 people in a series of violent eruptions in late 2010 when it also destroyed entire villages.

Indonesia has dozens of active volcanoes and straddles major tectonic fault lines known as the “Ring of Fire” between the Pacific and Indian oceans.

In August five people were killed and hundreds evacuated when a vol-cano on a tiny island in East Nusa Tenggara province erupted.

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) has expressed hope that Bank Indonesia (BI) would not raise again its key inter-est rate which currently reaches 7.5 percent.

“We hope the BI rate will be temporary. Dont raise it again,” Kadin Deputy Chairman for Small and Medium Businesses and Cooperatives Erwin Aksa said here on Monday.

The policy to raise the key rate had sparked a controversy since it might disrupt the national economic growth and business world, he said.

He said the policy would be temporary to strengthen the rupiahs exchange rate against the US dollar.

He reminded the central bank of many other ways to strengthen the rupiah, including reducing the countrys dependence on imported goods by boosting the domestic industry.

Bank Indonesia has decided to raise its benchmark rate, locally known as BI Rate, by 25 points to 7.5 percent from 7.25 percent, citing the widening current account deficit amid the risk of high global uncertainty.

At the meeting of its board of governors last Tuesday (Nov 12), the central bank also decided to raise lending facility and deposit facility rates to 7.5 percent and 5.75 percent respectively.

“The decision was taken to ensure that the current account deficit will decline to a healthier level and inflation rate can be kept in check to reach the range target of 3.5-5.5 percent in 2014 to support the economic growth,” said Difi A Johan-syah, executive director of the central banks communication department.

Head of Investment of PT BCA Sekuritas Herdi Ranu Wibowo predicted the key interest rate hike would raise the foreign holding of state bonds at the end of this year.

“With the BI Rate being raised again, I predict foreign investors will prefer to invest in bonds than in shares, provided that the rupiahs exchange rate remains stable and the current account deficit will not increase,” he said.

Tokyo Electric Power Co, known as Tepco, said it trans-ferred the rods to a steel cask within the same cooling pool in a badly damaged reactor build-ing, beginning the delicate and unprecedented task of removing 400 tonnes of highly irradiated spent fuel from that reactor.

“We will continue with the work from tomorrow and proceed, paying close attention to safety,” Tepco said in a statement.

While battling leaks of radia-tion-contaminated water around the plant, which was knocked out by Japan’s mammoth March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, Tepco

has embarked on decommission-ing four reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi plant. That task is likely to take decades and cost tens of billions of dollars.

The company must carefully pluck more than 1,500 brittle and potentially damaged assemblies from the unstable reactor No. 4. Tepco estimates that removing all the rods from the reactor will take a year, although some experts say that is an ambitious target.

The cask holds 22 rods. Trans-ferring this first batch will take about two days and it will take about a week to get the cask to the common storage pool in another

building, a Tepco spokesman said.

Moving them is urgent because they are being stored 18 meters (59 feet) above ground level in a building that has buckled and tilted and could collapse if an-other quake strikes. Removing the rods have been likened to taking cigarettes out of a crushed pack.

If the rods are exposed to air or if they break, huge amounts of ra-dioactive gases could be released into the atmosphere. There are 50-70 in each of the assemblies, which weigh around 300 kg (660 pounds) and are 4.5 meters (15 feet) long.

Paris - A French engineer abducted by Islamist militants in Nigeria and held for 11 months arrived back in France on Monday after managing to escape his kidnappers. A plane carrying the “weakened” 63-year-old Fran-cis Collomp, accompanied by France’s Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, landed early Monday at a military airport outside Paris.

He emerged from the plane looking extremely tired, his face drawn, and was met by relatives and the French prime minister.

Collomp was taken by Islamist militants on December 19, 2012, in the state of Katsina in northern Nigeria. The circumstances of his escape remain uncertain. Nigerian police said he had escaped in the northern city of Zaria on Saturday while his captors were praying.

“He watched his captors’ prayer time. They always prayed for 15 minutes. And yesterday they did not lock the door to his cell,” , said Femi Adenaike Adeleye, the police commissioner in the regional capital of Ka-duna. “While they were at prayer he sneaked out and began to run.”

But a source with knowledge of the case said he had taken advantage of a Nigerian military operation to sneak out of his unlocked cell. Collomp stopped a motorcycle taxi and had it take him to the nearest police station, from where he was brought to Kaduna.

Adeleye said Collomp had been held in the city of Kano after his abduc-tion and about two months ago brought to Zaria. Didier Le Bret, the head of the French foreign ministry’s crisis centre, earlier told AFP Collomp was “weakened” but in good enough health to travel.

Collomp “lost 30 kilos” (66 pounds) during his ordeal but was in a good mental state, Le Bret said. News of his freedom came amid an emotional roller-coaster in France in the last three weeks over foreign hostages.

The nation rejoiced in late October when four ex-hostages flew home from Niger after more than three years in captivity, but within less than a week was in mourning for two radio journalists abducted and killed by extremist rebels in Mali.

KAZAN, Russia — Russian investigators on Monday combed through the charred fragments of a Boeing 737 jetliner as they tried to determine what caused its crash that killed all 50 people on board.

The plane belonging to Tatarstan Airlines crashed Sunday while trying to land at its home port in the Russian city of Kazan, the capital of the oil-rich province of Tatarstan. The son of the provincial governor and the chief of the local branch of Russia’s main security agency were among the victims.

The plane, which was flying from Moscow, crashed while making a sec-ond attempt at landing, said Alexander Poltinin, the head of the local branch of Russia’s Investigative Committee. He said the investigators are trying to determine why the crew couldn’t land at first try.

Poltinin said the investigators are looking into possible pilot error or an equipment failure. A video taken by an airport security camera that was posted on the Lifenews website showed the jet slamming into the ground at a very sharp angle and exploding in a giant fireball.

The traffic controller at the Kazan airport who contacted the plane before the crash said the crew told him they weren’t ready for landing as it was approaching, but didn’t specify the problem.

Fragments of the plane littered the tarmac and fire crews spent hours extinguishing the blaze. Poltinin said it could take weeks to identify the remains of some of the victims. Russian emergency ministry officials said that a British national, Donna Bull, was among the victims.

The investigators have found both of the plane’s black boxes, which con-tain the recording of its systems performance and the crew conversations and are essential for the crash probe. They said the recorders were damaged.

Magomed Tolboyev, a highly decorated Russian test pilot, said on Rossiya television that it wasn’t immediately clear why the crew was unable to land at first try in good weather, saying it could be linked to a failure of some of the plane’s systems or a crew error.

The plane that crashed was built 23 years ago and had seen service with seven other carriers prior to being commissioned by Tatarstan Airlines.

In 2001, it was damaged in a landing accident in Brazil that hurt no one. The aircraft has been in service with Tatarstan Airlines since 2008.

WELLINGTON - Pride dented and World Cup hopes in the balance, Mexico have coped with the ignominy of an intercontinental playoff and are all but assured of a spot at next year’s global soccer showpiece before they face New Zealand in the second leg on Wednesday.

Two decades after France failed to qualify for the 1994 World Cup following a shock home defeat against Bulgaria, Les Bleus lost to Ukraine for the first time in the first leg by a two-goal margin.

WELLINGTON - Pride dented and World Cup hopes in the balance, Mexico have coped with the ignominy of an intercontinental playoff and are all but assured of a spot at next year’s global soccer showpiece before they face New Zealand in the second leg on Wednesday.

‘El Tri’, who only qualified for the playoff when the United States scored two late goals to beat Panama, ran rampant against a defensive All Whites’ side at the Azteca last week to record a 5-1 victory in the first leg.

SYDNEY - Australian spy agencies attempted to listen in to the phone calls of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and also targeted his wife and senior ministers, reports said Monday.

Secret documents leaked by US whistleblower Edward Snowden, obtained by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and The Guardian newspaper, name the president and nine of his inner circle as targets of the surveillance.

The revelations emerge as bilateral ties between the strategic allies are already strained over previous spying allegations and over how to deal with boatpeople heading for Australia via Indonesia.

The documents show that Australia’s electronic intelligence agency, the Defence Signals Directorate, tracked Yudhoyono’s activity on his mobile phone for 15 days in August 2009, when Labor’s Kevin Rudd was prime minister.

A list of targets also includes Vice President Boediono, who was in Australia last week, former vice president Yussuf Kalla, the foreign affairs spokesman, the security minister and the information minister, the reports said.

The ABC said one of the documents was titled “3G impact and update” and appeared to chart attempts by Australian intelligence to keep pace with the rollout of 3G technology in Indonesia and across Southeast Asia.

A number of intercept options were listed and a recommendation was made to choose one of them and to apply it to a target -- in this case the Indonesian leadership, the broadcaster said.

The latest release of Snowden documents comes just weeks after reports claimed Canberra’s overseas diplomatic posts, including in Jakarta, were involved in a vast US-led surveillance network, which sparked an angry reaction from Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa.

This was followed by The Guardian reporting earlier this month that Australia and the United States mounted a joint surveillance operation on close neighbour Indonesia during 2007 UN climate talks in Bali.

Mount Sinabung on western Su-matra island, which has been erupt-ing on and off since mid-September, shot volcanic ash around 8,000 metres (26,000 feet) into the air, the Geological Disaster Mitigation and Volcanology Centre said.

“The transport ministry is redi-recting flights away from a certain path because of Mount Sinabung’s latest eruption,” ministry spokes-man Bambang Ervan said in a statement.

It also meant that more than 5,000 people who had recently been

evacuated from the area around Sinabung due to its eruptions were unable to return home.

On the main island of Java, Indonesia’s most active volcano, Mount Merapi, spewed a column of ash and smoke some 2,000 metres (6,500 feet) in the morning, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, chief of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency.

He said the eruption, which was triggered by small earthquakes, prompted around 600 families to rush to evacuation posts but they

were returning home as there was no imminent threat.

Mount Merapi killed more than 350 people in a series of violent eruptions in late 2010 when it also destroyed entire villages.

Indonesia has dozens of active volcanoes and straddles major tectonic fault lines known as the “Ring of Fire” between the Pacific and Indian oceans.

In August five people were killed and hundreds evacuated when a vol-cano on a tiny island in East Nusa Tenggara province erupted.

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) has expressed hope that Bank Indonesia (BI) would not raise again its key inter-est rate which currently reaches 7.5 percent.

“We hope the BI rate will be temporary. Dont raise it again,” Kadin Deputy Chairman for Small and Medium Businesses and Cooperatives Erwin Aksa said here on Monday.

The policy to raise the key rate had sparked a controversy since it might disrupt the national economic growth and business world, he said.

He said the policy would be temporary to strengthen the rupiahs exchange rate against the US dollar.

He reminded the central bank of many other ways to strengthen the rupiah, including reducing the countrys dependence on imported goods by boosting the domestic industry.

Bank Indonesia has decided to raise its benchmark rate, locally known as BI Rate, by 25 points to 7.5 percent from 7.25 percent, citing the widening current account deficit amid the risk of high global uncertainty.

At the meeting of its board of governors last Tuesday (Nov 12), the central bank also decided to raise lending facility and deposit facility rates to 7.5 percent and 5.75 percent respectively.

“The decision was taken to ensure that the current account deficit will decline to a healthier level and inflation rate can be kept in check to reach the range target of 3.5-5.5 percent in 2014 to support the economic growth,” said Difi A Johan-syah, executive director of the central banks communication department.

Head of Investment of PT BCA Sekuritas Herdi Ranu Wibowo predicted the key interest rate hike would raise the foreign holding of state bonds at the end of this year.

“With the BI Rate being raised again, I predict foreign investors will prefer to invest in bonds than in shares, provided that the rupiahs exchange rate remains stable and the current account deficit will not increase,” he said.

“We will continue with the work from tomorrow and proceed, paying close attention to safety,” Tepco said in a statement.

While battling leaks of radia-tion-contaminated water around the plant, which was knocked out by Japan’s mammoth March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, Tepco

has embarked on decommission-ing four reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi plant. That task is likely to take decades and cost tens of billions of dollars.

The company must carefully pluck more than 1,500 brittle and potentially damaged assemblies from the unstable reactor No. 4. Tepco estimates that removing all the rods from the reactor will take a year, although some experts say that is an ambitious target.

The cask holds 22 rods. Trans-ferring this first batch will take about two days and it will take about a week to get the cask to the common storage pool in another

building, a Tepco spokesman said.

Moving them is urgent because they are being stored 18 meters (59 feet) above ground level in a building that has buckled and tilted and could collapse if an-other quake strikes. Removing the rods have been likened to taking cigarettes out of a crushed pack.

If the rods are exposed to air or if they break, huge amounts of ra-dioactive gases could be released into the atmosphere. There are 50-70 in each of the assemblies, which weigh around 300 kg (660 pounds) and are 4.5 meters (15 feet) long.

Paris - A French engineer abducted by Islamist militants in Nigeria and held for 11 months arrived back in France on Monday after managing to escape his kidnappers. A plane carrying the “weakened” 63-year-old Fran-cis Collomp, accompanied by France’s Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, landed early Monday at a military airport outside Paris.

He emerged from the plane looking extremely tired, his face drawn, and was met by relatives and the French prime minister.

Collomp was taken by Islamist militants on December 19, 2012, in the state of Katsina in northern Nigeria. The circumstances of his escape remain uncertain. Nigerian police said he had escaped in the northern city of Zaria on Saturday while his captors were praying.

“He watched his captors’ prayer time. They always prayed for 15 minutes. And yesterday they did not lock the door to his cell,” , said Femi Adenaike Adeleye, the police commissioner in the regional capital of Ka-duna. “While they were at prayer he sneaked out and began to run.”

But a source with knowledge of the case said he had taken advantage of a Nigerian military operation to sneak out of his unlocked cell. Collomp stopped a motorcycle taxi and had it take him to the nearest police station, from where he was brought to Kaduna.

Adeleye said Collomp had been held in the city of Kano after his abduc-tion and about two months ago brought to Zaria. Didier Le Bret, the head of the French foreign ministry’s crisis centre, earlier told AFP Collomp was “weakened” but in good enough health to travel.

Collomp “lost 30 kilos” (66 pounds) during his ordeal but was in a good mental state, Le Bret said. News of his freedom came amid an emotional roller-coaster in France in the last three weeks over foreign hostages.

The nation rejoiced in late October when four ex-hostages flew home from Niger after more than three years in captivity, but within less than a week was in mourning for two radio journalists abducted and killed by extremist rebels in Mali.

KAZAN, Russia — Russian investigators on Monday combed through the charred fragments of a Boeing 737 jetliner as they tried to determine what caused its crash that killed all 50 people on board.

The plane belonging to Tatarstan Airlines crashed Sunday while trying to land at its home port in the Russian city of Kazan, the capital of the oil-rich province of Tatarstan. The son of the provincial governor and the chief of the local branch of Russia’s main security agency were among the victims.

The plane, which was flying from Moscow, crashed while making a sec-ond attempt at landing, said Alexander Poltinin, the head of the local branch of Russia’s Investigative Committee. He said the investigators are trying to determine why the crew couldn’t land at first try.

Poltinin said the investigators are looking into possible pilot error or an equipment failure. A video taken by an airport security camera that was posted on the Lifenews website showed the jet slamming into the ground at a very sharp angle and exploding in a giant fireball.

The traffic controller at the Kazan airport who contacted the plane before the crash said the crew told him they weren’t ready for landing as it was approaching, but didn’t specify the problem.

Fragments of the plane littered the tarmac and fire crews spent hours extinguishing the blaze. Poltinin said it could take weeks to identify the remains of some of the victims. Russian emergency ministry officials said that a British national, Donna Bull, was among the victims.

The investigators have found both of the plane’s black boxes, which con-tain the recording of its systems performance and the crew conversations and are essential for the crash probe. They said the recorders were damaged.

Magomed Tolboyev, a highly decorated Russian test pilot, said on Rossiya television that it wasn’t immediately clear why the crew was unable to land at first try in good weather, saying it could be linked to a failure of some of the plane’s systems or a crew error.

The plane that crashed was built 23 years ago and had seen service with seven other carriers prior to being commissioned by Tatarstan Airlines.

In 2001, it was damaged in a landing accident in Brazil that hurt no one. The aircraft has been in service with Tatarstan Airlines since 2008.

SYDNEY - Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce has demanded the government halt what he described as a “virtual takeover” of Virgin Australia by foreign airlines, saying they were working to destabilise the national carrier.

Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand and Abu Dhabi-based Etihad already own 63 percent of Qantas’ main domestic rival and under a Aus$350 million (US$328 million) capital raising announced last week, that could increase to as much as 72 percent.

In a searing letter to Prime Minister Tony Abbott and all state governments, seen by the Australian Financial Review, Joyce charged it was the “final act” by “predatory” state-owned airlines to cripple Qantas both domestically and internationally.

Joyce’s ultimate fear is that the capital raising, “supported and largely underwritten by three foreign governments’’, was part of a strategy of subsidising Virgin so it could continue to undercut Qantas on profitable domestic routes.

The domestic sector is a key money spinner for the airline and it has helped prop up its underperforming international network. In his letter, Joyce said the move by the three airlines had “all the characteristics of predator behaviour (to) substantially weaken a major competitor, Qantas Group, and recoup the costs at a later date”, the newspaper reported.

Qantas confirmed in a statement Monday that a letter had been sent “to express concerns, as the national carrier, about potentially damaging shifts in Australia’s aviation industry”.

“Virgin Australia’s proposed capital raising could see its foreign ownership rise to more than 80 percent without the need for any further regulatory approval,” the statement said.

“Despite this, the airline would retain all the traffic rights given to Australian carriers.

“If wholly privatised, Virgin Australia’s ability to receive potentially unlimited capital from its government-backed own-ers would seriously distort the domestic aviation market for the benefit of foreign interests.

“The decision of these shareholders to invest in Virgin Aus-tralia’s loss-making strategy highlights that these airlines aren’t subject to the same commercial realities as Qantas.”

It demanded Canberra “fully examine the motives behind the virtual takeover of Virgin Australia by foreign airlines, and to prevent destabilising of the domestic aviation industry, local tourism and jobs”.

Qantas said the situation was compounded by the disadvan-tage it experienced from the restrictions imposed by the Qantas Sale Act when it was privatised in 1995, which limits foreign ownership in the national carrier to 49 percent.

Joyce said the government should urgently revisit the “out-dated policy framework”.

The Australian and International Pilots Association backed Joyce, arguing the playing field has become skewed due to the rising influence of foreign government-controlled investment in the market.

“Qantas is an iconic Australian company and has been a massive contributor to our national employment, skills base and economy for the better part of a century. Allowing it to be white-anted by an unfair competitive environment is not in the national interest,” AIPA president Nathan Safe said.

Treasurer Joe Hockey has not responded publicly to Qantas’ claims but Virgin chief John Borghetti hit back, saying the airline’s emergence had ended a monopoly in the Australian market.

“Fundamentally the landscape has changed forever, and it is no longer a monopoly,’’ he told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“This is all about competition and the creation of more jobs, and helping the tourism sector, which in the current global climate certainly can use all the help it can get.”

The biennial event, held from November 20 to December 1, fea-tures domestic makers of passenger cars, commercial vehicles and trucks alongside most of their European competitors.

A total of 177 exhibitors, includ-ing parts suppliers, from a dozen countries will be part of the event’s 43rd edition.

But US-based automakers, which have not attended since before the global financial crisis, are staying away again, as are South Korean producers, with the exception of Hyundai.

Saakashvili, who has been in Brussels for more than a week, re-fused to attend Sunday’s inaugura-tion, citing the criminal prosecution of several of his former ministers and members of his party.

Ivanishvili has said that Saakash-vili also is likely to be questioned, in particular over the 2005 death of his first prime minister. Zurab Zhvania’s death was attributed to accidental carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a faulty gas heater, but his brother has accused Saakashvili of hiding the truth.

Saakashvili also may face ques-tioning over the 2008 war with Russia, which ended with Rus-sian troops in full control of two breakaway Georgian republics. His opponents accuse him of needlessly antagonizing Russia and giving Moscow a pretext to invade.

ROME — Stung by a party schism, former Italian Premier Sil-vio Berlusconi on Saturday invited defectors to join in an alliance with his center-right power base, a bid that could help boost the media mogul’s leadership prospects.

Berlusconi abandoned the char-acteristic defiance he has shown after previous stinging setbacks by reaching out to Deputy Premier Angelino Alfano to try to forge a political alliance to oppose his enemies on the left.

The ex-premier blames his many troubles, including a looming ban on seeking election following a tax fraud conviction, on a judiciary he claims sympathizes with the left. Such a ban would still allow him to lead a political party.

Premier Enrico Letta’s center-left Democratic Party is the lead partner in an unusual, 6-month-old governing coalition with Berlusco-ni’s center-right forces. Whether the schism in Berlusconi’s Free-dom People fold will have reper-cussions on Italy’s fragile govern-ment, which has been struggling to pull the country out of a persistent recession, wasn’t immediately clear.

Alfano, who also serves as interior minister in Letta’s govern-ment, called a news conference for later Saturday.

On Friday evening, Alfano announced he was splitting from Berlusconi to form his own New Center-Right party.

In his first public comments about the schism an emotional Berlusconi told supporters that Alfano’s decision deeply pains him and that he “didn’t sleep last night.” Berlusconi described the split as going against his “vision of uniting all the moderates, who, if they were all together, would be the majority of the electorate.”

Still, he urged his followers not to criticize Alfano’s new party.

“This group, even if for now it looks like it is (ending up) sup-porting the left, must necessarily be part of the coalition of moder-ates,” Berlusconi said. “We must treat them as we now treat” other key allies on the right, including the anti-Europe Northern League and a small right-wing party.

Berlusconi said failure for the center-right to pull together would have dire consequences for Italy. If the next government should exclude his forces, “I believe many of us won’t stick around to live in Italy...but be forced to expatriate.”

Fellow senators must decide in an approaching vote to strip him of his Senate seat because of the tax fraud conviction, which was upheld by Italy’s top court in August. He also faces a separate, two-year ban on holding or run-ning for public office linked to the tax fraud conviction.

The prospect of the Senate showdown, scheduled for Nov. 27, has sparked disarray among Berlusconi’s forces.

Last month, his top deputies, led by Alfano, balked at his order to bring down Letta’s government in a no-confidence vote in what was essentially seen as an act of sabotage by a Berlusconi enraged that Letta’s party would vote against his staying in the Senate.

Separately, Berlusconi also risks a lifetime ban on holding public office if he loses his bid in appeals courts to overturn a conviction for allegedly paying a minor for sex and later using his office while premier to try to cover up the purported sexual relation-ship with the teenage girl.

One of the left’s leaders, Mas-simo Cacciari, warned on Saturday that the Democratic Left risks its own schism.

A number of public facilities existing in Gi-anyar County still need serious arrangement. From the many existing public facilities, Gi-anyar government just plans an arrangement for two existing public facilities in 2014. They include the Ciung Wanara urban park and the former Kebo Iwa terminal or Ngurah Rai stadium becoming a sport center.

On Sunday (Nov 17), Regional Secretary of Gianyar, Ida Bagus Gaga Adi Saputra, said the arrangement of public facilities had been included in the regional budget plan 2014, remaining under discussion with the Gianyar House. Ciung Wanara urban park, for instance, was currently under painting process of the sculpture. Then, it would be harmonized with the arrangement of pedes-trian, the making of plaza and seating. No vehicles would be allowed to pass through in front of SMPN 1 Gianyar junior high school. Later, it would be beneficial as part of educational facility related to the Car-free Day activity. “The statue remains to be an icon with more appropriate park to support the icon,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the terminal having been converted into sport center area would be followed up with an arrangement around the Kebo Iwa Stadium. Later on, this zone would really be intended for sport and recreation activities. Entrance was designed through the east door, while at the edge would be equipped with a jogging track. NEW YORK — Two fossilized dinosaur skeletons found on a U.S. ranch in 2006 are going on the auc-tion block in New York City. They’re expected to bring between $7 million and $9 million.

The nearly complete skeletons are described as the “Dueling Dinosaurs.” The sellers say the dinosaurs — one a plant eater, the other a meat eater — appear to be locked in mortal combat.

They’re being sold as one lot at Bonhams auction house on Tuesday. The sellers believe one may be a close relative of Tyrannosaurus rex. The other may be a new spe-cies similar to Triceratops.

They hope a philanthropist buys them and donates them to a public institution.

The Head of Badung Revenue Ser-vice (Dispenda), Wayan Adi Arnawa, recently revealed that before 2012 the parking tax remained 20 percent. It meant that if the parking fund em-bezzled was IDR 28 billion, Badung had lost tax revenue from the parking approximately IDR 5.6 billion.

Adi Arnawa recognized the poten-tial of evaporating airport parking tax was large enough. However, he denied if the problem emerged due to weak supervision made by Badung govern-ment. EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

BEING a regent in Buleleng County or a chief of customary village as well as the official of Tri Datu in Buleleng customary village in fact has a unique obligation. The officials should naur palebuh or present a pig or buffalo in the village temple of Buleleng customary village.

The regent and chief of customary village are required to present a buffalo. Meanwhile, Tri Datu officials or equivalent position should deliver a black pig weighing about 80 to 100 kilogram.

On full moon of the fifth month in Balinese calendar, Sunday (Nov 17) was held a naur palebuh ritual in the form of pig by 32 descendants of former Tri Datu officials in Buleleng customary village that had died. Each of those descendants of the former officials presented a pig in the ritual so there were totally 32 pigs.

Naur palebuh ritual procession was carried out from 08:00 a.m. Originally, the residents presenting the naur palebuh and other residents gathered with the apparatus of Buleleng customary village at Catus Pata, right on the intersection of Jalan Veteran and Jalan Gajah Mada Singaraja. From the intersection, the pigs were paraded on foot to village temple. Once arriving at village temple, those pigs were paraded again around the temple for three times. It was then resumed with the worship en masse. After saying prayers, the pigs were slaughtered and the pork was distributed to residents. Besides, some portions of the pork were also taken by the descendants of former officials as a means of ritual to be presented in the family temple or clan temple.

Chief of Buleleng customary village, Nyoman Sutrisna, said the naur pale-buh ritual had become a tradition and set forth in the local customary bylaw or awig-awig. It was mentioned that one becoming the regent of Buleleng was mandatory to present a naur palebuh ritual in the form of buffalo after the death or cremated. Similar obligation also applies for the chief of Buleleng customary village to do naur palebuh in the form of buffalo. Meanwhile, the Tri Datu officials were mandatory to present a pig. “If any former officers or former regent who has not done their naur palebuh ritual, we always remind their offspring,” he said. The Head of Tabanan Culture and Tourism Agency, Wayan Adnyana, justified the restriction against the visit to Subak Mu-seum. He explained there were several considerations for such restrictions. One of them was waiting for the discussion on the repairs for the damaged museum. “Based on the study made by the Public Works, only exhibition space was declared relatively safe to visit. They tended to observe the agricultural heri-tage on display in the museum space. A number of foreign tour-ists from various countries also made a visit to the museum. “It’s reasonable that visitor increased after the re-opening. However, they were mostly pupils and students majoring in engineer-

ing,” said one of the museum attendants.

Previously, three students of SDK Immaculata elementary school, Tabanan, got injured due to a falling revetment of museum area on September 27. Such incident occurred when dozens of students were fol-lowing a field study to subak museum. After the incident, the Regent of Tabanan Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti temporarily closed the museum activity. Status of the museum was belonging to Bali government. However, the management was delegated to the Tabanan County. A number of legislators in the Tabanan House once urged the Bali gov-ernment to hand over the asset to Tabanan. (kmb30)

Interestingly, though it was re-opened to the public, the location that can be visited is still restricted. Only the exhibition room can still be enjoyed by visitors. Mean-while, the miniature of ancient house and the complex in the south of museum complex is still closed to the public. The closure is based on security consideration.

Drawing an overwhelmingly female and African-American audience, “The Best Man Holiday” was a surprise challenger for the mighty “Thor.” The R-rated romantic comedy, with an en-semble cast including Morris Chestnut and Taye Diggs, debuted with more than three times the box office of 1999’s “The Best Man.” That film opened with $9 million.

The performance of director Malcolm D. Lee’s “The Best Man Holiday” contin-ued an ongoing trend. Movies that appeal particularly to black audiences have often been surpassing expectations at the box office. “It’s a familiar refrain, and it’s get-

ting a little tired,” said Lee. “I thought we had a chance to do something special.”

“Lee Daniels’ The Butler” led the box office for several weeks in August, lead-ing to a cumulative total of $115.5 mil-lion domestically. The Oscar-contender “12 Years a Slave” has made $25 million in five weeks of limited release.

Lee said that while black audiences “see everything” at the movies, from action movies to romantic comedies, he hopes broader audiences begin re-sponding to so-called “black films.” The audience for “Best Man Holiday” was 87 percent African-American. Regardless, a third “Best Man” film now seems a likely

bet. “If there is going to be a sequel, it won’t take 14 years,” granted Lee.

Marvel’s Norse superhero, however, has been hammering audiences around the globe. “Thor: The Dark World” made $52.5 million internationally over the weekend, bringing its worldwide total to $479.8 million. With Chris Hemsworth as the title character and Tom Hiddleston as the popular villain Loki, the Thor fran-chise has proven to be one of Marvel’s most successful.

Just as “Thor” approached the half-billion mark, Warner Bros.’ space adven-ture “Gravity” crossed it in its seventh week of release.

TOKYO — The director of the Keanu Reeves 3-D film “47 Ronin” says he hopes his adaptation of a true Japanese story becomes a Holly-wood blockbuster. Film director Carl Rinsch, Reeves and co-stars appeared together in front of a Tokyo audience on Monday.

The film is based on an ac-tual historical event during the Edo Period known as

“Chushingura.” It involved a lord who was wrong-fully put to death and his followers — ronin — who sought revenge.

Rinsch said he took on the film sub-ject and sat down with Keanu Reeves

about two years ago. They won-dered how they were going to take on a popu-lar Japanese tale and do it justice.

Rinsch said they decided to make

the story their own, making “it a Hol-lywood blockbuster and see it through that lens.”

“These themes of revenge, loyalty, perseverance, were things we knew from the very beginning were univer-sal,” said Rinsch, who is making his directorial feature debut with the film.

Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada stars as the main supporting character, Kuranosuke Oishi, a leader of the men. Sanada said that during the filming Reeves became more and more of a samurai, while the character he played became more “wild” in style.

Sanada said Reeves and himself hoped to depict the friendship of two characters, which transcended borders and social positions, in the film.

Reeves said “47 Ronin” is a story where people “share this journey to reclaim their land, their honor, their way. It was very special to me to be part of it.”

Reeves, who grew up attracted to martial arts movies, makes his directo-rial debut this year with the martial arts action movie “Man of Tai Chi.” The film “47 Ronin” premiers in Japan on Dec. 6 and opens in U.S. theaters on Dec. 25.
