Drawing an overwhelmingly female and African-American audience, “The Best Man Holiday” was a surprise challenger for the mighty “Thor.” The R-rated romantic comedy, with an en-semble cast including Morris Chestnut and Taye Diggs, debuted with more than three times the box office of 1999’s “The Best Man.” That film opened with $9 million.

The performance of director Malcolm D. Lee’s “The Best Man Holiday” contin-ued an ongoing trend. Movies that appeal particularly to black audiences have often been surpassing expectations at the box office. “It’s a familiar refrain, and it’s get-

ting a little tired,” said Lee. “I thought we had a chance to do something special.”

“Lee Daniels’ The Butler” led the box office for several weeks in August, lead-ing to a cumulative total of $115.5 mil-lion domestically. The Oscar-contender “12 Years a Slave” has made $25 million in five weeks of limited release.

Lee said that while black audiences “see everything” at the movies, from action movies to romantic comedies, he hopes broader audiences begin re-sponding to so-called “black films.” The audience for “Best Man Holiday” was 87 percent African-American. Regardless, a third “Best Man” film now seems a likely

bet. “If there is going to be a sequel, it won’t take 14 years,” granted Lee.

Marvel’s Norse superhero, however, has been hammering audiences around the globe. “Thor: The Dark World” made $52.5 million internationally over the weekend, bringing its worldwide total to $479.8 million. With Chris Hemsworth as the title character and Tom Hiddleston as the popular villain Loki, the Thor fran-chise has proven to be one of Marvel’s most successful.

Just as “Thor” approached the half-billion mark, Warner Bros.’ space adven-ture “Gravity” crossed it in its seventh week of release.

TOKYO — The director of the Keanu Reeves 3-D film “47 Ronin” says he hopes his adaptation of a true Japanese story becomes a Holly-wood blockbuster. Film director Carl Rinsch, Reeves and co-stars appeared together in front of a Tokyo audience on Monday.

The film is based on an ac-tual historical event during the Edo Period known as

“Chushingura.” It involved a lord who was wrong-fully put to death and his followers — ronin — who sought revenge.

Rinsch said he took on the film sub-ject and sat down with Keanu Reeves

about two years ago. They won-dered how they were going to take on a popu-lar Japanese tale and do it justice.

Rinsch said they decided to make

the story their own, making “it a Hol-lywood blockbuster and see it through that lens.”

“These themes of revenge, loyalty, perseverance, were things we knew from the very beginning were univer-sal,” said Rinsch, who is making his directorial feature debut with the film.

Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada stars as the main supporting character, Kuranosuke Oishi, a leader of the men. Sanada said that during the filming Reeves became more and more of a samurai, while the character he played became more “wild” in style.

Sanada said Reeves and himself hoped to depict the friendship of two characters, which transcended borders and social positions, in the film.

Reeves said “47 Ronin” is a story where people “share this journey to reclaim their land, their honor, their way. It was very special to me to be part of it.”

Reeves, who grew up attracted to martial arts movies, makes his directo-rial debut this year with the martial arts action movie “Man of Tai Chi.” The film “47 Ronin” premiers in Japan on Dec. 6 and opens in U.S. theaters on Dec. 25.

NEW YORK — In an unlikely battle of sequels, “Thor: The Dark World” bested “The Best Man Holiday” at the box office. Disney’s “Thor: The Dark World” continued its box-office reign with $38.5 million in its second week of release, according to studio estimates Sunday. Opening 15 years after the original “The Best Man,” Universal’s “The Best Man Holiday” opened strongly with $30.6 million.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. BEING a regent in Buleleng County or a chief of customary village as well as the official of Tri Datu in Buleleng customary village in fact has a unique obligation. The officials should naur palebuh or present a pig or buffalo in the village temple of Buleleng customary village.

Interestingly, the oblation should be presented after the officials died. By all means, it will be presented by the descendants of the officials. The obligation set forth in bylaw of customary village applies to the regent of Buleleng origi-nating from anywhere, either from Buleleng or beyond Buleleng. The regent and chief of customary village are required to present a buffalo. Meanwhile, Tri Datu officials or equivalent position should deliver a black pig weighing about 80 to 100 kilogram.

On full moon of the fifth month in Balinese calendar, Sunday (Nov 17) was held a naur palebuh ritual in the form of pig by 32 descendants of former Tri Datu officials in Buleleng customary village that had died. Each of those descendants of the former officials presented a pig in the ritual so there were totally 32 pigs.

Naur palebuh ritual procession was carried out from 08:00 a.m. Originally, the residents presenting the naur palebuh and other residents gathered with the apparatus of Buleleng customary village at Catus Pata, right on the intersection of Jalan Veteran and Jalan Gajah Mada Singaraja. From the intersection, the pigs were paraded on foot to village temple. Once arriving at village temple, those pigs were paraded again around the temple for three times. It was then resumed with the worship en masse. After saying prayers, the pigs were slaughtered and the pork was distributed to residents. Besides, some portions of the pork were also taken by the descendants of former officials as a means of ritual to be presented in the family temple or clan temple.

Chief of Buleleng customary village, Nyoman Sutrisna, said the naur pale-buh ritual had become a tradition and set forth in the local customary bylaw or awig-awig. It was mentioned that one becoming the regent of Buleleng was mandatory to present a naur palebuh ritual in the form of buffalo after the death or cremated. Similar obligation also applies for the chief of Buleleng customary village to do naur palebuh in the form of buffalo. Meanwhile, the Tri Datu officials were mandatory to present a pig. “If any former officers or former regent who has not done their naur palebuh ritual, we always remind their offspring,” he said. The Head of Tabanan Culture and Tourism Agency, Wayan Adnyana, justified the restriction against the visit to Subak Mu-seum. He explained there were several considerations for such restrictions. One of them was waiting for the discussion on the repairs for the damaged museum. “Based on the study made by the Public Works, only exhibition space was declared relatively safe to visit. So, we can only open this part for public visit,” he said, Sunday (Nov 17).

Then, several other buildings were considered vulnerable, in-cluding the miniature of ancient house and subak area whose foundation had collapsed. Being vulnerable, his party prohib-ited the tourist visit. Although

constrained, the visitors to the Subak Museum kept on flow-ing, and even tended to increase after the closure. “Although it is opened, we still tighten the supervision against visitors. We attempt to prevent any further incident,” he concluded.

As observation of Bali Post, after the closure the visitors to the museum located near the Tabanan town was dominated by students and pupils. They tended to observe the agricultural heri-tage on display in the museum space. A number of foreign tour-ists from various countries also made a visit to the museum. “It’s reasonable that visitor increased after the re-opening. However, they were mostly pupils and students majoring in engineer-

ing,” said one of the museum attendants.

Previously, three students of SDK Immaculata elementary school, Tabanan, got injured due to a falling revetment of museum area on September 27. Such incident occurred when dozens of students were fol-lowing a field study to subak museum. After the incident, the Regent of Tabanan Ni Putu Eka Wiryastuti temporarily closed the museum activity. Status of the museum was belonging to Bali government. However, the management was delegated to the Tabanan County. A number of legislators in the Tabanan House once urged the Bali gov-ernment to hand over the asset to Tabanan. (kmb30)

Subak Museum re-opened Visitors restricted Tabanan (Bali Post)—

Having been closed for a month, the Subak Museum at Sanggulan, Tabanan, was finally re-opened. Interestingly, though it was re-opened to the public, the location that can be visited is still restricted. Only the exhibition room can still be enjoyed by visitors. Mean-while, the miniature of ancient house and the complex in the south of museum complex is still closed to the public. The closure is based on security consideration.

Maven is scheduled to blast off aboard an unmanned rocket at 1:28 p.m. EST (1828 GMT) Monday.

FLIGHT TIMEThe journey to Mars will take

10 months, putting Maven in orbit around the red planet in September 2014. The spacecraft will circle the red planet for a full Earth year, examining the upper atmosphere. It will dip as low as 78 miles (125 kilometers) above Mars to sample the atmosphere. Its orbit will ex-tend as high as 3,864 miles (6,218 kilometers).

PURPOSEScientists want to learn how

Mars transformed from a warm, wet planet a few billion years ago to the dry, cold world of today. The atmosphere went from thick to thin. Much of the atmospheric gas may have escaped into space. The sun is the likely culprit.

COSTThe Maven mission will cost

$671 million over its entire life-time. That includes the price of the unmanned Atlas V rocket used to launch the spacecraft from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida — NASA is headed back to Mars, this time with a robotic scout named Maven that will attempt to solve the mystery of the red planet’s radical climate change.

MAVEN SPACECRAFTWhen its solar wings are ex-

tended, Maven stretches 37.5 feet (11.4 meters) — about the length of a school bus. It weighs 5,410 pounds (2,454 kilograms), the same weight as an SUV. Eight scientific instruments are on board, as well as communications relay equipment for use with Mars landers. Maven stands for Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution, with a capital “N’’ at the end of EvolutioN. The idea for Maven dates back 10 years. Scientists hope to keep it going well beyond its advertised working life-time of one Earth year. The project is led for NASA by the University of Colorado’s Laboratory for At-mospheric and Space Physics in Boulder.

ABOUT MARSMars is the most similar planet to

Earth in our solar system, with the greatest prospects of habitability for future astronauts. Mars is about half the size of Earth but has about the same land area. A Martian year lasts 687 Earth days.

MARS MISSIONSMaven is NASA’s 21st mis-

sion to Mars. Fourteen of the first 20 succeeded. The 1964 Mariner 4 was the first spacecraft to fly by the red planet. Curiosity was America’s most recent Mars visi-tor, launching in 2011 and landing in 2012.

CHUGGING AWAY AT MARSThree spacecraft currently are

collecting data in orbit around Mars: NASA’s 2001-launched Mars Odyssey, Europe’s 2003-launched Mars Express and NASA’s 2005-launched Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Two rovers are on the surface, still working: NASA’s 2003-launched Opportunity and 2011-launched Curiosity.

FUTURE MARS SHOTSNASA plans to launch a robotic

geologist named InSight in 2016; the lander will penetrate the Martian surface with a seismometer and heat probe. The next NASA wheeled rover will fly in 2020, collecting rock samples for potential return to Earth. A human expedition is not anticipated until the 2030s.

NEW YORK — Two fossilized dinosaur skeletons found on a U.S. ranch in 2006 are going on the auc-tion block in New York City. They’re expected to bring between $7 million and $9 million.

The nearly complete skeletons are described as the “Dueling Dinosaurs.” The sellers say the dinosaurs — one a plant eater, the other a meat eater — appear to be locked in mortal combat.

They’re being sold as one lot at Bonhams auction house on Tuesday. The sellers believe one may be a close relative of Tyrannosaurus rex. The other may be a new spe-cies similar to Triceratops.

They hope a philanthropist buys them and donates them to a public institution.

Bali PostBANGLI - Batur caldera region

having been recognized worldwide as a geopark in fact still retains a classical problem. Aside from the exploitation to nature, the region has not been free from the onslaught of plastic waste. Even, in one of the geopark areas looked a pile of plas-tic waste piling up like a landfill.

As observation made on Sunday (Nov 17), the mounting pile of plas-tic waste was rampantly found in the vicinity of Bukit Payang Park, Kintamani. The Head of Badung Revenue Ser-vice (Dispenda), Wayan Adi Arnawa, recently revealed that before 2012 the parking tax remained 20 percent. It meant that if the parking fund em-bezzled was IDR 28 billion, Badung had lost tax revenue from the parking approximately IDR 5.6 billion.

Adi Arnawa recognized the poten-tial of evaporating airport parking tax was large enough. However, he denied if the problem emerged due to weak supervision made by Badung govern-ment. He reasoned that so far there was no special surveillance by county government against the airport parking management. Supervision was made internally by PT Angkasa Pura I. He also mentioned few employers played hide-and-seek with the government related to the tax.

Further, he explained the disclosure of corruption case in the airport park-ing fund caused him to be summoned by the Attorney General in Jakarta. He was summoned as witness about six months ago. He admitted to have been questioned about the management and payment of parking tax. gI just said as

it was, I did not know. I also explained that in this case the Badung County was also harmed,h he said.

Tax leakage harming the finance of regional government inspired the Badung Revenue Service to im-mediately apply online tax system. Unfortunately, it could not be imple-mented in the near future. Adi Arnawa mentioned, other than being probably rejected by employers, there were stages to be passed first, including the drafting of its legal basis.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants Association (PHRI) of Badung Chapter, IGN Rai Surya Wijaya, said that his party did not object to the implementation of online tax system. Even, he mentioned that all this time the employers had paid tax obligation transparently. However, he also added there should be a comprehensive study before apply-ing the online system. Similarly, he reminded in order the tax revenue should be utilized optimally for de-velopment. gDo not let the tax even be corrupted,h he said. (kmb25)

MANGUPURA - Updating the tax management through an online tax system becomes one of the urgent things to be carried out by Badung County. The lost tax potential all this time was no longer a mere allegation. As proof, in the parking revenue corruption case at the Ngurah Rai Airport, Badung County has missed. From the case itself, approximately IDR 5.6 billion of airport parking tax could not be levied.

Batur caldera region having been recognized worldwide as a geopark in fact still re-tains a classical problem.

Batur Geopark stuffed by plastic wastefound in local forests. The rubbish wrapped in plastic bags seemed to have been left to pile up as such.

Related to that matter, the Head of the Bangli City Planning, Ida Ayu Gede Yudi Sutha, when asked for her confirmation claimed that her party would immediately address the waste problem.

The rubbish piling up in the Bukit Payang tourist attraction would be promptly addressed along with the janitor of the market including local communities and people were appealed not to dispose any rubbish in the area. Her party also admitted to revive the public awareness about the importance of sanitation other than providing socialization in association with the hazards of plastic waste.

Even in the future, to raise the public awareness on the importance of environmental sanitation, her party planned to organize the rural Adipura program competition. She hoped with the program local com-munity would no longer be littering in the region. (ina)

His inauguration brings to an end the nearly decade-long presi-dency of Mikhail Saakashvili, who aligned this Black Sea nation with the United States and put it on the path toward integration with the European Union.

The new president has little political experience and is seen as beholden to Bidzina Ivanishvili, a multibillionaire whose coalition drove Saakashvili’s party from power in last year’s parliamentary election.

Ivanishvili has served as prime minister for the past year, but is now stepping down. His chosen successor, Irakli Gharibashvili, who as interior minister had been in charge of Georgia’s police force, is expected to be approved by par-liament in the coming days. In the meantime, Ivanishvili will serve as

acting prime minister. Most Georgians expect Ivanish-

vili to retain influence over political and economic life even after he leaves office, as the new president himself has acknowledged.

\”He (Ivanishvili) is a person who has very serious public sup-port,” Margvelashvili told The As-sociated Press during an interview at his home last week. “He is a person whom I respect very seri-ously and has very serious influence on me because I respect him and I trust him. So, any time he has some kind of position, definitely that will matter for me.” Margvelashvili won last month’s presidential election with 62 percent of the vote.

In his inaugural address, he expressed his commitment to de-mocracy, EU integration and the strategic partnership with the U.S.

He said Georgians would continue to do their part in the international fight against terrorism, despite the losses sustained in Afghanistan, where Georgia is the largest non-NATO contributor of troops to the NATO-led mission.

Saakashvili, who has been in Brussels for more than a week, re-fused to attend Sunday’s inaugura-tion, citing the criminal prosecution of several of his former ministers and members of his party.

Ivanishvili has said that Saakash-vili also is likely to be questioned, in particular over the 2005 death of his first prime minister. Zurab Zhvania’s death was attributed to accidental carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a faulty gas heater, but his brother has accused Saakashvili of hiding the truth.

Saakashvili also may face ques-tioning over the 2008 war with Russia, which ended with Rus-sian troops in full control of two breakaway Georgian republics. His opponents accuse him of needlessly antagonizing Russia and giving Moscow a pretext to invade.

ROME — Stung by a party schism, former Italian Premier Sil-vio Berlusconi on Saturday invited defectors to join in an alliance with his center-right power base, a bid that could help boost the media mogul’s leadership prospects.

Berlusconi abandoned the char-acteristic defiance he has shown after previous stinging setbacks by reaching out to Deputy Premier Angelino Alfano to try to forge a political alliance to oppose his enemies on the left.

The ex-premier blames his many troubles, including a looming ban on seeking election following a tax fraud conviction, on a judiciary he claims sympathizes with the left. Such a ban would still allow him to lead a political party.

Premier Enrico Letta’s center-left Democratic Party is the lead partner in an unusual, 6-month-old governing coalition with Berlusco-ni’s center-right forces. Whether the schism in Berlusconi’s Free-dom People fold will have reper-cussions on Italy’s fragile govern-ment, which has been struggling to pull the country out of a persistent recession, wasn’t immediately clear.

Alfano, who also serves as interior minister in Letta’s govern-ment, called a news conference for later Saturday.

On Friday evening, Alfano announced he was splitting from Berlusconi to form his own New Center-Right party.

In his first public comments about the schism an emotional Berlusconi told supporters that Alfano’s decision deeply pains him and that he “didn’t sleep last night.” Berlusconi described the split as going against his “vision of uniting all the moderates, who, if they were all together, would be the majority of the electorate.”

Still, he urged his followers not to criticize Alfano’s new party.

“This group, even if for now it looks like it is (ending up) sup-porting the left, must necessarily be part of the coalition of moder-ates,” Berlusconi said. “We must treat them as we now treat” other key allies on the right, including the anti-Europe Northern League and a small right-wing party.

Berlusconi said failure for the center-right to pull together would have dire consequences for Italy. If the next government should exclude his forces, “I believe many of us won’t stick around to live in Italy...but be forced to expatriate.”

Fellow senators must decide in an approaching vote to strip him of his Senate seat because of the tax fraud conviction, which was upheld by Italy’s top court in August. He also faces a separate, two-year ban on holding or run-ning for public office linked to the tax fraud conviction.

The prospect of the Senate showdown, scheduled for Nov. 27, has sparked disarray among Berlusconi’s forces.

Last month, his top deputies, led by Alfano, balked at his order to bring down Letta’s government in a no-confidence vote in what was essentially seen as an act of sabotage by a Berlusconi enraged that Letta’s party would vote against his staying in the Senate.

Separately, Berlusconi also risks a lifetime ban on holding public office if he loses his bid in appeals courts to overturn a conviction for allegedly paying a minor for sex and later using his office while premier to try to cover up the purported sexual relation-ship with the teenage girl.

One of the left’s leaders, Mas-simo Cacciari, warned on Saturday that the Democratic Left risks its own schism.

Repair project to national road along Gilimanuk-Pekutatan road section still leaves a problem. Despite the project has been com-pletely worked on and the road has been smooth, some points espe-cially at the edge of traveled way and shoulder are still very deep. This condition is very hazardous,

especially for motorcycles moving aside or getting into the road.

As observation along the road worked on with state fund, almost all the edges were very deep. Most of them lay in the southern side of the road whose position was lower as happened at Melaya, exactly at the ascending path in front of SMPN 1 Melaya junior high school. Due to too high position, motorists

wishing to move aside or getting into the road got difficulty. Unfortu-nately, the edge was not made slop-ing with the asphalt surface. For the shoulder, it was filled with gravels making motorists more difficult.

“Due to too high, a lot of motor-ists get slipped. The ascending path is often passed through by vehicles why it was neglected as such,” said Nyoman Astawa, one of the resi-

dents met on Sunday (Nov 17).Similar condition was also

seen across the Melaya Market, exactly at the 16 km milepost of Gilimanuk-Denpasar. Actually, the road section was very crowd-ed with vehicle traffic. On the southern side of the road had the height of more than 10 centime-ters between the traveled way and shoulder. Even, it looked to reach

a half-motorcycle-tire deep. Many vehicles got difficulty to move aside due to such deep edge. A number of public buildings also looked lower than the road such as the bus stop opposite the Melaya Market. A number of motorcycles got difficulties to move aside and often slipped. Due to such condi-tion, few vehicles also looked skewed. (kmb26)

This official emphasized the achievement as one of the most beautiful lakes received by Ulun Danu should be maintained. Thus, the authenticity of Lake Beratan area should be well maintained, especially the amount of speed boat in operation. “We are still drafting a regional bylaw on the arrange-ment of Bedugul, including the speed boat. Hopefully, Bedugul and the lake can remain to look beautiful,” said the Regent of the PDI-P party. So, she said, the achievement attained by Ulun Danu would remain in demand by foreign travelers. Bedugul and Ulun Danu were at the same location so it

was required a careful planning to organize them better.

Especially for speed boat, said the re-gent, her party agreed to make a strict rule. “We’re going to make an in-depth study and prepare the rules. So, the beauty of the lake will be well maintained forever,” she said. This arrangement was expected to boost the tourist arrivals. Moreover, the Ulun Danu area had been named as one of the prettiest lakes on earth. Meanwhile, the management of Bedugul remained under auction process. Later on, management of the tourist attrac-tion would be made better by maintaining

the authenticity of the lake.As reported previously, the Ulun Danu

Beratan tourist attraction was included in one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. Such prideful predicate was released by an American medium, Huffington Post, last week. Beauty of Lake Beratan was men-tioned slightly different from Xi Hu Lake or West Lake in China and Lake Kawaguchi in Japan.

The media released 20 prettiest lakes on earth. Of that number, one of which was the Ulun Danu Beratan, Tabanan, Bali. Beauty of the lake located in the north of Tabanan appeared with a view of Ulun Danu Temple in the middle of the lake. Afterward, silhouette of the temple bounced off onto the surface of the lake. The panorama was referred to as nature’s gift in itself. On that account, it was worth crowning in a row of the prettiest lakes in the world. (kmb30)

Gianyar (Bali Post)—

A number of public facilities existing in Gi-anyar County still need serious arrangement. From the many existing public facilities, Gi-anyar government just plans an arrangement for two existing public facilities in 2014. They include the Ciung Wanara urban park and the former Kebo Iwa terminal or Ngurah Rai stadium becoming a sport center.

On Sunday (Nov 17), Regional Secretary of Gianyar, Ida Bagus Gaga Adi Saputra, said the arrangement of public facilities had been included in the regional budget plan 2014, remaining under discussion with the Gianyar House. Ciung Wanara urban park, for instance, was currently under painting process of the sculpture. Then, it would be harmonized with the arrangement of pedes-trian, the making of plaza and seating. No vehicles would be allowed to pass through in front of SMPN 1 Gianyar junior high school. Later, it would be beneficial as part of educational facility related to the Car-free Day activity. “The statue remains to be an icon with more appropriate park to support the icon,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the terminal having been converted into sport center area would be followed up with an arrangement around the Kebo Iwa Stadium. Later on, this zone would really be intended for sport and recreation activities. Entrance was designed through the east door, while at the edge would be equipped with a jogging track. At the mo-ment, the stadium had multifunction. Outdoor area was taken advantage for basketball and volleyball court. Most importantly, there was also a family recreation area such as the one for children. “Public facilities also require kid arena. Thus, Gianyar will also become a friendly town to children,” he said.

Related to the arrangement plan of the public facilities, the Regional Secretary in this case had not dared to mention the exact budget to be provided to conduct the process. Sport center had been gradually improved since last year so the arrangement would not much and so would the pedestrian at the Ciung Wanara urban park. “I think the budget will not be too large. Now, it is still being co-ordinated with consultant. Clearly, the chang-ing of urban look for Gianyar will become a priority in 2014,” he said. (kmb16)

SYDNEY - Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce has demanded the government halt what he described as a “virtual takeover” of Virgin Australia by foreign airlines, saying they were working to destabilise the national carrier.

Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand and Abu Dhabi-based Etihad already own 63 percent of Qantas’ main domestic rival and under a Aus$350 million (US$328 million) capital raising announced last week, that could increase to as much as 72 percent.

In a searing letter to Prime Minister Tony Abbott and all state governments, seen by the Australian Financial Review, Joyce charged it was the “final act” by “predatory” state-owned airlines to cripple Qantas both domestically and internationally.

Joyce’s ultimate fear is that the capital raising, “supported and largely underwritten by three foreign governments’’, was part of a strategy of subsidising Virgin so it could continue to undercut Qantas on profitable domestic routes.

The domestic sector is a key money spinner for the airline and it has helped prop up its underperforming international network. In his letter, Joyce said the move by the three airlines had “all the characteristics of predator behaviour (to) substantially weaken a major competitor, Qantas Group, and recoup the costs at a later date”, the newspaper reported.

Qantas confirmed in a statement Monday that a letter had been sent “to express concerns, as the national carrier, about potentially damaging shifts in Australia’s aviation industry”.

“Virgin Australia’s proposed capital raising could see its foreign ownership rise to more than 80 percent without the need for any further regulatory approval,” the statement said.

“Despite this, the airline would retain all the traffic rights given to Australian carriers.

“If wholly privatised, Virgin Australia’s ability to receive potentially unlimited capital from its government-backed own-ers would seriously distort the domestic aviation market for the benefit of foreign interests.

“The decision of these shareholders to invest in Virgin Aus-tralia’s loss-making strategy highlights that these airlines aren’t subject to the same commercial realities as Qantas.”

It demanded Canberra “fully examine the motives behind the virtual takeover of Virgin Australia by foreign airlines, and to prevent destabilising of the domestic aviation industry, local tourism and jobs”.

Qantas said the situation was compounded by the disadvan-tage it experienced from the restrictions imposed by the Qantas Sale Act when it was privatised in 1995, which limits foreign ownership in the national carrier to 49 percent.

Joyce said the government should urgently revisit the “out-dated policy framework”.

The Australian and International Pilots Association backed Joyce, arguing the playing field has become skewed due to the rising influence of foreign government-controlled investment in the market.

“Qantas is an iconic Australian company and has been a massive contributor to our national employment, skills base and economy for the better part of a century. Allowing it to be white-anted by an unfair competitive environment is not in the national interest,” AIPA president Nathan Safe said.

Treasurer Joe Hockey has not responded publicly to Qantas’ claims but Virgin chief John Borghetti hit back, saying the airline’s emergence had ended a monopoly in the Australian market.

“Fundamentally the landscape has changed forever, and it is no longer a monopoly,’’ he told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“This is all about competition and the creation of more jobs, and helping the tourism sector, which in the current global climate certainly can use all the help it can get.”

The biennial event, held from November 20 to December 1, fea-tures domestic makers of passenger cars, commercial vehicles and trucks alongside most of their European competitors.

A total of 177 exhibitors, includ-ing parts suppliers, from a dozen countries will be part of the event’s 43rd edition.

But US-based automakers, which have not attended since before the global financial crisis, are staying away again, as are South Korean producers, with the exception of Hyundai.

Toyota, the world’s biggest auto-maker, will be among the major firms at the show, after recovering from a series of crises in recent years includ-ing the global meltdown, Japan’s quake-tsunami disaster and the recall of millions of vehicles. The recalls badly dented Toyota’s reputation for safety and quality.

A policy blitz under Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has helped stoke optimism over the economy as the yen slumped, boost-

ing the profits of major exporters including Toyota.

However, Japan’s number-two auto-maker Nissan, part-owned by France’s Renault, has chopped its earnings outlook with its bid to tap emerging markets yet to reap big rewards.

A recent management shuffle also stoked questions about confidence in the leadership of long-time Nissan chief executive Carlos Ghosn.

The big European firms will have a close eye on boosting their presence in the world’s third-largest car market after China and the United States.

However, foreign brands hold a miniscule share -- just 4.5 percent -- of a market that saw more than 5.0 million vehicles sold in Japan last year.

That puny presence has long stoked anger among US and some European automakers, which say they have been effectively shut out of Japan through tariffs and other barriers. The simmering issue is a key obstacle in ongoing free-trade negotiations.

Luxury German brands including

Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Porsche, which have seen significant success in Japan, will be among this year’s at-tendees along with Audi, Volkswagen, Renault, Peugeot-Citroen, Britain’s Land Rover and Sweden’s Volvo.

The show will focus heavily on high-tech offerings and environmen-tal technologies as firms look to tap the burgeoning green-vehicle sector, seen as the next evolution of the global automotive industry.

“Cars without a driver, electronic driving assistance, radar, fuel con-sumption controls -- the link between cars and electronics is coming togeth-er more and more,” said auto expert Tatsuya Mizuno, head of Tokyo’s Mizuno Credit Advisory.

A pioneer of hybrid vehicles, Toyota is set unveil its latest fuel-cell concept car with an expected com-mercial rollout two years away.

The four-seater sedan has a range of 500 kilometres (310 miles) -- lon-ger than previous versions -- and can be recharged in just three minutes through hydrogen gas tanks stored inside the vehicle.

Apart from Toyota, other auto-makers are also eyeing a widespread commercial offering including rival Honda, which already has a fuel-cell car, the FCX Clarity, available on a small scale in limited markets.

Undeniably, bliss or happiness has become a dream and destination of most people. Career and material achievement are the bridge to reach it. However, when arriving at the height of these, sometimes people encounters there is something lost. Ultimately, they travel to several parts of the world to look for a sat-isfying answer of this matter.

Many favorite destinations of the world now offer the combination of leisure and spirituality as if these two words had become new mantra in travel trend. Traveling for this purpose is focused on the experi-ence and journey. It digs out self-potential and human achievement in the past, chiefly on self-realization and his relation to nature and the

Creator. This kind of tourism is appropriate for those wishing to pursue the answer above.

In the journey of time, local history records that the Balinese community has a bright achieve-ment in spiritual development. Some footprints can be encoun-tered through the heritage at fa-vorite destinations. Gunung Kawi sanctuary, for instance, becomes a proof of spiritual activity estab-lished during the administration of the King Anak Wungsu (11th century). Next to the cave temples occurs a series of meditation cells. The rock was cut to make some cloisters and meditation cells. At this location, ancient people can practice their meditation. It is a truly tranquil place situated at the Petanu riverside.

Another important location is nestled at the Elephant Cave or Goa Gajah, Gianyar. It is estimated to have been founded during the reign of Warmadeva Dynasty (10th century). The sanctuary is known as Kunjarapada where Kunjara (Sanskrit) means elephant and pada means location. In the mass, this name represents that it became the last destination of Maharishi Agastya in providing his spiritual enlightenment in Bali.

Today, visitors can trace back and enjoy a variety of experiences in spiritual travel, ranging from visiting great temples to ancient sanctuaries used to practice yoga. Even, yoga class has now been of-fered at several hotels, villas and yoga centers at main destinations of Bali. Meanwhile, for relaxation and

rejuvenation visitors can try some spa treatments in the combination of traditional method and ingredients with modern technique. These are often promoted through illustrious catchphrases mentioning as product of mind, body and soul. To sum up, by visiting Bali you can enrich your experience related to spiritual and wellness. Though the tradition has been created hundreds of years ago, its practice and benefits remain relevant to modern life today.

More than that, Bali as a tourist destination also implements the concept of indigenous wisdom called Tri Hita Karana (THK). It stands for an integrated application of social, environmental and spiri-tual aspect in tourism development and practices. Tourism industry also implemented this wisdom.

It is intended to implement and preserve this sublime concept in their business practices. By doing so, it is expected they could give the best satisfaction to customer, surrounding community and the operator going hand in hand with the conservation of nature.

Ultimately, inspired by Hindu-ism, indigenous wisdom and local tradition, the island has a variety of treasures, endless activities and emysteryf to explore. They have become integrated part of Balinese life. Many visitors come and go. Some get interested to join the cer-emony, to roam pristine villages, or even to stay at ashrams for weeks. Hopefully, one of the activities above can become an answer for those wishing to balance their life with any achievement at hand.

It was affirmed by Made Sedana Yoga, an officer of Klungkung Transportation, Com-munication and Informatics Agency, at Bias traditional harbor, Kusamba, Sunday (Nov 17). Related to Nyepi Segara, he said that all activities in the surrounding sea were not al-lowed. Therefore, all crossing activities both for passengers and goods were last made on Sunday. As seen at Bias traditional harbor on Sunday, a number of porters looked so busy transporting goods to a number of boats that would cross to Nusa Penida. Some of them admitted that transportation of goods such as basic necessities and building materials were deliberately accelerated in order to finish on Sunday and avoided the accumulation of goods at the port. Then, on Monday the cross-ing activity was not allowed because it was the implementation of Nyepi Segara.

On the contrary, the transportation of goods from Nusa Penida to Kusamba was also accelerated. A scrap collector at Jungut Batu, Zainal, said he was forced to immediately ac-complish his crossing for four pickup trucks of used goods in a day, and immediately trans-ported them to Denpasar from Bias traditional port. gToday (Sunday\Ed) everything must have been transported out of here, so as not to interfere with the implementation of Nyepi Segara by residents here,h he said.

Yoga Sedana added that Nyepi Segara was not only celebrated by residents of Kusamba. On Tuesday (Nov 19), Nyepi Segara was also held by residents in the coastal areas of

Nusa Penida. Nyepi Segara in Nusa Penida related to the Mamungkah, Ngenteg Ling-gih, Mapeselang, Ngingkup, Bangun Ayu, Pemarayungan and Mapedanan ritual in the Batu Medawu Temple, Nusa Penida. Culmi-nation of the ritual was held at the pujawali or anniversary of the local temple, Wednesday (Nov 27). With that condition, the crossing

service in the three harbors at Kusamba to Nusa Penida and vice versa would not be operated for two days.

According to local resident, Nengah Mudra, Nyepi Segara was intended to honor the Ngusaba ritual implementation and execution of ritual in the Batu Medawu Temple. Moreover, another ritual was also

implemented at sea in the form of Mulang Pakelem. Since the implementation of Nyepi Segara, he said that no resident dared to break it. gImplementation of Nyepi Segara is for the common good and respecting the ocean as a form of harmonization of the relationship between humans and the environment (the ocean),h he said. SYDNEY - Australian spy agencies attempted to listen in to the phone calls of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and also targeted his wife and senior ministers, reports said Monday.

Secret documents leaked by US whistleblower Edward Snowden, obtained by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and The Guardian newspaper, name the president and nine of his inner circle as targets of the surveillance.

The revelations emerge as bilateral ties between the strategic allies are already strained over previous spying allegations and over how to deal with boatpeople heading for Australia via Indonesia.

The documents show that Australia’s electronic intelligence agency, the Defence Signals Directorate, tracked Yudhoyono’s activity on his mobile phone for 15 days in August 2009, when Labor’s Kevin Rudd was prime minister.

A list of targets also includes Vice President Boediono, who was in Australia last week, former vice president Yussuf Kalla, the foreign affairs spokesman, the security minister and the information minister, the reports said.

The ABC said one of the documents was titled “3G impact and update” and appeared to chart attempts by Australian intelligence to keep pace with the rollout of 3G technology in Indonesia and across Southeast Asia.

A number of intercept options were listed and a recommendation was made to choose one of them and to apply it to a target -- in this case the Indonesian leadership, the broadcaster said.

The latest release of Snowden documents comes just weeks after reports claimed Canberra’s overseas diplomatic posts, including in Jakarta, were involved in a vast US-led surveillance network, which sparked an angry reaction from Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa.

This was followed by The Guardian reporting earlier this month that Australia and the United States mounted a joint surveillance operation on close neighbour Indonesia during 2007 UN climate talks in Bali.

Mount Sinabung on western Su-matra island, which has been erupt-ing on and off since mid-September, shot volcanic ash around 8,000 metres (26,000 feet) into the air, the Geological Disaster Mitigation and Volcanology Centre said.

“The transport ministry is redi-recting flights away from a certain path because of Mount Sinabung’s latest eruption,” ministry spokes-man Bambang Ervan said in a statement.

It also meant that more than 5,000 people who had recently been

evacuated from the area around Sinabung due to its eruptions were unable to return home.

On the main island of Java, Indonesia’s most active volcano, Mount Merapi, spewed a column of ash and smoke some 2,000 metres (6,500 feet) in the morning, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, chief of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency.

He said the eruption, which was triggered by small earthquakes, prompted around 600 families to rush to evacuation posts but they

were returning home as there was no imminent threat.

Mount Merapi killed more than 350 people in a series of violent eruptions in late 2010 when it also destroyed entire villages.

Indonesia has dozens of active volcanoes and straddles major tectonic fault lines known as the “Ring of Fire” between the Pacific and Indian oceans.

In August five people were killed and hundreds evacuated when a vol-cano on a tiny island in East Nusa Tenggara province erupted.

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) has expressed hope that Bank Indonesia (BI) would not raise again its key inter-est rate which currently reaches 7.5 percent.

“We hope the BI rate will be temporary. Dont raise it again,” Kadin Deputy Chairman for Small and Medium Businesses and Cooperatives Erwin Aksa said here on Monday.

The policy to raise the key rate had sparked a controversy since it might disrupt the national economic growth and business world, he said.

He said the policy would be temporary to strengthen the rupiahs exchange rate against the US dollar.

He reminded the central bank of many other ways to strengthen the rupiah, including reducing the countrys dependence on imported goods by boosting the domestic industry.

Bank Indonesia has decided to raise its benchmark rate, locally known as BI Rate, by 25 points to 7.5 percent from 7.25 percent, citing the widening current account deficit amid the risk of high global uncertainty.

At the meeting of its board of governors last Tuesday (Nov 12), the central bank also decided to raise lending facility and deposit facility rates to 7.5 percent and 5.75 percent respectively.

“The decision was taken to ensure that the current account deficit will decline to a healthier level and inflation rate can be kept in check to reach the range target of 3.5-5.5 percent in 2014 to support the economic growth,” said Difi A Johan-syah, executive director of the central banks communication department.

Head of Investment of PT BCA Sekuritas Herdi Ranu Wibowo predicted the key interest rate hike would raise the foreign holding of state bonds at the end of this year.

“With the BI Rate being raised again, I predict foreign investors will prefer to invest in bonds than in shares, provided that the rupiahs exchange rate remains stable and the current account deficit will not increase,” he said.

Tokyo Electric Power Co, known as Tepco, said it trans-ferred the rods to a steel cask within the same cooling pool in a badly damaged reactor build-ing, beginning the delicate and unprecedented task of removing 400 tonnes of highly irradiated spent fuel from that reactor.

“We will continue with the work from tomorrow and proceed, paying close attention to safety,” Tepco said in a statement.

While battling leaks of radia-tion-contaminated water around the plant, which was knocked out by Japan’s mammoth March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, Tepco

has embarked on decommission-ing four reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi plant. That task is likely to take decades and cost tens of billions of dollars.

The company must carefully pluck more than 1,500 brittle and potentially damaged assemblies from the unstable reactor No. 4. Tepco estimates that removing all the rods from the reactor will take a year, although some experts say that is an ambitious target.

The cask holds 22 rods. Trans-ferring this first batch will take about two days and it will take about a week to get the cask to the common storage pool in another

building, a Tepco spokesman said.

Moving them is urgent because they are being stored 18 meters (59 feet) above ground level in a building that has buckled and tilted and could collapse if an-other quake strikes. Removing the rods have been likened to taking cigarettes out of a crushed pack.

If the rods are exposed to air or if they break, huge amounts of ra-dioactive gases could be released into the atmosphere. There are 50-70 in each of the assemblies, which weigh around 300 kg (660 pounds) and are 4.5 meters (15 feet) long.

Paris - A French engineer abducted by Islamist militants in Nigeria and held for 11 months arrived back in France on Monday after managing to escape his kidnappers. A plane carrying the “weakened” 63-year-old Fran-cis Collomp, accompanied by France’s Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, landed early Monday at a military airport outside Paris.

He emerged from the plane looking extremely tired, his face drawn, and was met by relatives and the French prime minister.

Collomp was taken by Islamist militants on December 19, 2012, in the state of Katsina in northern Nigeria. The circumstances of his escape remain uncertain. Nigerian police said he had escaped in the northern city of Zaria on Saturday while his captors were praying.

“He watched his captors’ prayer time. They always prayed for 15 minutes. And yesterday they did not lock the door to his cell,” , said Femi Adenaike Adeleye, the police commissioner in the regional capital of Ka-duna. “While they were at prayer he sneaked out and began to run.”

But a source with knowledge of the case said he had taken advantage of a Nigerian military operation to sneak out of his unlocked cell. Collomp stopped a motorcycle taxi and had it take him to the nearest police station, from where he was brought to Kaduna.

Adeleye said Collomp had been held in the city of Kano after his abduc-tion and about two months ago brought to Zaria. Didier Le Bret, the head of the French foreign ministry’s crisis centre, earlier told AFP Collomp was “weakened” but in good enough health to travel.

Collomp “lost 30 kilos” (66 pounds) during his ordeal but was in a good mental state, Le Bret said. News of his freedom came amid an emotional roller-coaster in France in the last three weeks over foreign hostages.

The nation rejoiced in late October when four ex-hostages flew home from Niger after more than three years in captivity, but within less than a week was in mourning for two radio journalists abducted and killed by extremist rebels in Mali.

KAZAN, Russia — Russian investigators on Monday combed through the charred fragments of a Boeing 737 jetliner as they tried to determine what caused its crash that killed all 50 people on board.

The plane belonging to Tatarstan Airlines crashed Sunday while trying to land at its home port in the Russian city of Kazan, the capital of the oil-rich province of Tatarstan. The son of the provincial governor and the chief of the local branch of Russia’s main security agency were among the victims.

The plane, which was flying from Moscow, crashed while making a sec-ond attempt at landing, said Alexander Poltinin, the head of the local branch of Russia’s Investigative Committee. He said the investigators are trying to determine why the crew couldn’t land at first try.

Poltinin said the investigators are looking into possible pilot error or an equipment failure. A video taken by an airport security camera that was posted on the Lifenews website showed the jet slamming into the ground at a very sharp angle and exploding in a giant fireball.

The traffic controller at the Kazan airport who contacted the plane before the crash said the crew told him they weren’t ready for landing as it was approaching, but didn’t specify the problem.

Fragments of the plane littered the tarmac and fire crews spent hours extinguishing the blaze. Poltinin said it could take weeks to identify the remains of some of the victims. Russian emergency ministry officials said that a British national, Donna Bull, was among the victims.

The investigators have found both of the plane’s black boxes, which con-tain the recording of its systems performance and the crew conversations and are essential for the crash probe. They said the recorders were damaged.

Magomed Tolboyev, a highly decorated Russian test pilot, said on Rossiya television that it wasn’t immediately clear why the crew was unable to land at first try in good weather, saying it could be linked to a failure of some of the plane’s systems or a crew error.

The plane that crashed was built 23 years ago and had seen service with seven other carriers prior to being commissioned by Tatarstan Airlines.

In 2001, it was damaged in a landing accident in Brazil that hurt no one. The aircraft has been in service with Tatarstan Airlines since 2008.

The Czechs, who became the first nation to retain the Davis Cup since Spain in 2009, lifted the tro-phy after Stepanek’s 6-3 6-1 6-1 victory amid wild cheers by several hundred visiting fans in the impos-ing Kombank Arena.

Djokovic ensured the final went to the wire by beating Tomas Berdych 6-4 7-6(5) 6-2 to level the tie at 2-2 but there was to be no repeat of Serbia’s epic 3-2 final vic-tory over France three years ago.

The world number two did not have the right support cast this time round with Janko Tipsarevic sidelined due to a foot injury and Viktor Troicki banned for missing a blood test in April.

The 117th-ranked Lajovic was thrown into the fray and had 17,000 noisy Serbian fans on their feet after he broke Stepanek, a former top-10 player now ranked 44th, in the opening game.

But that turned out to be the high point for the 23-year-old as his op-ponent highlighted the gulf in class between the two players.

“The match was the same (as last year’s final), under the big-gest possible pressure that can be,” Stepanek, who beat Spain’s Nicolas Almagro in the decisive rubber 12 months ago, said in a courtside interview.

“I knew that I would want to use the experience from last year’s final. I controlled the match apart from the first game and I think I played in my best form ever this weekend. “Of course, it is more difficult to defend the title, but I think we used the experience from last year and we earned it.”

DESPAIRING BENCHStepanek combined his baseline

and volleying skills to good effect, running Lajovic ragged with sting-ing forehands to carve out easy net points as the despairing Serbian bench watched on helplessly.

Earlier in the day, Djokovic came out on top against world num-ber seven Berdych after a titanic tussle in the opening two sets.

He converted his 10th break

point in the final game of the first, clinched a rollercoaster tiebreak in the second and wrapped up the third for the loss of only two games.

Djokovic blew kisses to the crowd and asked them to stay and support Lajovic’s effort to punch above his weight, but it all ended in tears for Serbia as the stadium started to empty long before the 34-year-old Stepanek sealed victory with a sear-ing smash down the line.

The result focused attention on the decision to leave Djokovic out of Saturday’s doubles, which the Czechs won in straight sets, as well as naming Lajovic for the final singles instead of the more experienced and hard-hitting Ilija Bozoljac.

“We only had so many fit and eligible players to choose from and although I must take responsibility for the outcome as the decision maker, I have no regrets about the team selection in any of the rub-bers,” Serbia captain Bogdan Obra-dovic told a news conference.

“Missing two second-choice players was too big a blow and we just couldn’t do more although we tried to cope with the tough situa-tion as best we could. The positive thing is that we have expanded our Davis Cup team and we will keep the faith in our new arrivals.”

TORONTO — The Portland Trail Blazers won their sixth straight game with a 118-110 overtime victory over the Toronto Raptors on Sunday after LaMar-cus Aldridge and Damian Lillard each scored 25 points and Nicolas Batum added 24.

Lillard was 3 for 3 from the floor in the extra period as the Blazers escaped after blowing a 17-point lead in regulation.

Rudy Gay forced overtime with a buzzer-beating layup and equaled a season high with 30 points to go with 10 rebounds. DeMar DeRozan scored 29 points and Jonas Valanciunas added a season-high 19.

The Blazers made a season-high 15 3-pointers, finishing 15 for 32 from beyond the arc. Toronto made just three.

Steve Blake had nine points and 16 assists for the Lakers, who made a late surge for just their second victory in six games. Los Angeles scored 16 consecutive points in a rally spanning the third and fourth quarters, holding De-troit without a field goal for more than five minutes.

Brandon Jennings scored 23 points and Andre Drummond had 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Pistons, who have lost five of six.

Two decades after France failed to qualify for the 1994 World Cup following a shock home defeat against Bulgaria, Les Bleus lost to Ukraine for the first time in the first leg by a two-goal margin.

That means the odds are in-deed heavily stacked against Didier Deschamps’s team ahead of Tuesday’s return game at the Stade de France. The French players’ display was so poor on Friday that it led the French media to question if the national side’s performance had been the “worst in history.”

WELLINGTON - Pride dented and World Cup hopes in the balance, Mexico have coped with the ignominy of an intercontinental playoff and are all but assured of a spot at next year’s global soccer showpiece before they face New Zealand in the second leg on Wednesday.

‘El Tri’, who only qualified for the playoff when the United States scored two late goals to beat Panama, ran rampant against a defensive All Whites’ side at the Azteca last week to record a 5-1 victory in the first leg.

While New Zealand must score at least four goals to give themselves any hope of advancing to their second successive finals, the visitors are not prepared to accept they have booked their place in Brazil just yet.

“We’re here to win the match, to convince that we’ve done things right,” coach Miguel Herrera told reporters in Wellington. “We can’t make the mistake of overconfidence or triumphalism, at this moment our principal enemy could be Mexico (itself). “We’ll go out with the same attitude, as determined or more so than in the first leg.”

Mexico exploited New Zealand’s defensive tactics in the first leg when the All Whites had nine players behind the ball at times, which allowed the hosts the space to dictate play. They also exploited a makeshift All Whites defence with three goals coming from set-pieces.

New Zealand felt the result flaterred Mexico. “I don’t think the Mexican team were worthy of five goals,” All Whites midfielder Chris James told reporters. “I think we handed it to them, they’re a good team and everyone can see that but I think ... we gave them the chance to score five goals and they took them.”

TOUGH TALKING

The All Whites have adopted a seige mentality in the buildup to the clash, trying to convince themselves and the New Zealand public they can overturn

the deficit. Much of the feeling at home, however, is that qualification is beyond New Zealand.

Instead, the focus has shifted to the future of coach Ricki Her-bert, who delivered a bizarre outburst after the game in Mexico, and whether he will give younger players an opportunity to prove themselves.

The 52-year-old’s contract is to expire at the end of the current campaign, and short of a miraculous turnaround at Wellington

Regional Stadium, Herbert is expected to be out of work by the end of the week.

New Zealand Football Chairman Frank van Hattum told local media they expected to call for applications for the job and Herbert was welcome to express his interest.

Herbert will be forced to shake up his defence on Wednesday with Ivan Vicelich and Leo Bertos both suspended after pick-ing up yellow cards in Mexico City.

The biggest question will be whether he embraces calls to introduce younger

players to help build a team for the future, with pundits suggesting defenders Bill

Tuiloma and Storm Roux should be given an opportunity.

A more attacking mindset has also been forced upon him with calls for James to start

alongside Michael McGlinchey in the midfield while VfB Stuttgart’s Marco Rojas and Shane

Smeltz should also come in after striker Chris Wood was suspended.

“We need to score four goals, so we have to be attack-ing,” James said. “We felt that we let the country down a bit with the performance last week.

YAOUNDE, Cameroon — Cam-eroon qualified for the World Cup with a resounding 4-1 win over Tunisia in the second leg of their playoff on Sunday, ensuring West Africa continued its dominance of the continent’s qualifying competi-tion.

Cameroon won by the same score on aggregate after the teams drew 0-0 in Tunisia. The team follows Nigeria and Ivory Coast, who won their playoffs Saturday, in sealing a place at next year’s tournament in Brazil.

Pierre Webo scored after four minutes for Cameroon and Ben-jamin Moundandjo made it 2-0 in the 30th at Omnisports Ahmadou-Ahidjo stadium. Ahmed Akaichi pulled one back for the visiting Tunisians just after halftime, but Jean Makoun added a third in the 65th and scored again in the 86th to seal Cameroon’s progress.

“Brazil, here we come,” Cam-eroon captain Samuel Eto’o, who reversed his decision to retire from internationals to play in this playoff, told the crowd through a public ad-dress system after the game.

Cameroon, Africa’s first quarterfi-nalist in 1990, will play in its seventh World Cup, a major boost for the nation after it failed to qualify for the last two African Cups.

BRUSSELS - Belgium and Chelsea midfielder Eden Hazard has advised national and club team mate Kevin De Bruyne to leave the English premier league side in order to get enough match practice before next year’s World Cup finals in Brazil.

Since his return from a loan spell at German side Werder Bremen, De Bruyne, Belgium’s top scorer

in qualifying for Brazil, has started only four matches for Chelsea and hasn’t played a full 90 minutes in any.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho attended Belgium’s 2-0 defeat to Colombia on Thursday, with De Bruyne a pale shadow of the domi-nant figure he was last season.

“For sure, playing at a World Cup without having been in action for a year, I think that’s very dif-ficult. I think for him that leaving

and playing, that would be good,” Hazard told Belgian public broad-caster VRT late on Sunday. “If we want to get the best out of Kevin, I think that it’s best if he leaves,” he added.

De Bruyne, 22, has already been linked with a possible return to Germany’s Bundesliga during the January transfer window, which would give him several months to return to top form by the time the World Cup kicks off in June.

BUENOS AIRES, Argen-tina — River Plate continued its terrible run with a 3-1 loss Sunday at home against strug-gling Olimpo.

River Plate has picked up only three points from a possible 21 in its last seven matches, falling near the bottom of the first-division standings with 17 points in 16 games. Olimpo has only 11.

Giovanni Simeone gave River a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute, before Olimpo rallied with goals from Martin Perez Guedes, Ivan Furios and David Vega.

Angry fans at River’s Monu-mental stadium chanted, “Out, all of you,” with loud jeers as the team left the field.

In another Sunday match, Ramiro Caseres scored all three goals as Velez Sarsfield defeated Rosario Central 3-2. Walter Acu-na scored in the 86th for Rosario

and Gonzalo Castillejos added a second two minutes later.

On Saturday, San Lorenzo defeated Belgrano 4-2 to take the lead with 30 points. Newell’s Old Boys have 29 points and can move clear at the top with a vic-tory Monday over Tigre.

Also on Saturday, All Boys lost 3-2 to Lanus 3, Godoy Cruz downed Estudiantes 2-1 and Quilmes drew 1-1 with Racing Club. On Friday, Gimnasia and Argentinos Juniors drew 0-0.

France facing tough challenge against Ukraine

LONDON — France needs an unprecedented comeback to avoid missing its first World Cup in 20 years. No European team has ever qualified for the World Cup through the playoffs after losing the first leg 2-0.

To turn around the result, France needs to rediscover its attacking potency as Deschamps - who won the 1998 World Cup and the Euro-pean championships two years lat-er as a player, must decide who to play up front against an extremely well organized Ukrainian side.

“We’ll need to have that bit of folly that will make for an excep-tional match,” Deschamps said. “It’s up to the players to get into that mentality. But we also have to realize they won’t play with 10 players at the back. We have to put them under pressure from the start and show a lot of determination

and keep the high tempo going until the end.”

Flourishing in the Premier League this season, Loic Remy had a poor game on the right wing in Kiev and could be replaced with Karim Benzema, meaning that Deschamps could keep Olivier Giroud as his central sriker. Samir Nasri had a quiet game and may be replaced in the playmaker’s role by Mathieu Valbuena.

Franck Ribery will also need to raise his game with the national team to prove that he fully deserves the FIFA Ballon d’Or. Ribery who struggled to make any meaning-

ful impact in Ukraine, has been tipped to claim the FIFA accolade after helping Bayern Munich to the Champions League.

“Obviously, Ukraine knew how dangerous Ribery could be,” Deschamps said. “They were very aggressive toward him. They made a lot of fouls that went unpunished. Ukraine eliminated Franck. He had very few chances to take on his op-ponent one-on-one. There was always a midfielder around to provide back-up.”

With Laurent Koscielny sus-pended after his sending off, Deschamps has a major headache in defense and must decide who will play alongside Eric Abidal. With Raphael Varane struggling with a sore knee, Deschamps must pick between the inexperi-

enced Mamamdou Sakho and Bacary Sagna. Sagna plays at right back for Ar-senal but has played center half before.

“We were shaken over there against a very committed team who played at a very high level while we were average,” Deschamps said. “We took a slap and the situation is favorable for them. It won’t be easy. We’re obviously not in a good posi-tion. We have to reverse the trend and believe in this now.”

After winning the first round of his duel with Zlatan Ibrahimovic when he scored the winner in Portugal’s 1-0 win over Sweden, Cristiano Ronaldo is hopeful he can again steal the show at the Swedish national stadium on Tues-day night.

Cameroon national soccer team players celebrate after scoring in their World Cup qualifying playoff second leg soccer match, in Yaounde, Cameroon, Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013.

“We’ve been through several long and difficult years,” Makoun said. “Now, I think we identified the problem, which is concord among us. We can achieve better results in the future and I think our performance today shows that we have a bright future.”

If Ghana and Algeria win their playoffs on Tuesday, as expected, the continent will be represented by the same five nations that played at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Webo slammed home a left-footed shot in front of around 60,000 in

Yaounde for an immediate lead for Cameroon. The home team was also denied a penalty for what appeared to be a clear handball before Mound-andjo made it 2-0 after cutting in from the right flank to score.

After being brought on by Tunisia coach Ruud Krol, Akaichi struck after a defensive mix-up by the Cameroo-nians for 2-1 straight after the break.

But Cameroon powered back as Makoun headed home a Benoit Assou-Ekotto corner and grabbed a second in the final five minutes after a shot rebounded off the post.

JAKARTA \ Indonesian authori-ties on Sunday executed a Pakistani man who was convicted of smug-gling drugs into the country.

Muhammad Abdul Hafeez, 44, was shot dead by a firing squad early Sunday in Banten province, west of Jakarta, said Attorney General’s Office spokesman Setia

Untung Arimuladi.Hafeez was arrested in June 2001

upon arrival at Soekarno-Hatta airport after customs officers found 1,050 grams of heroin hidden in snack packages he was carrying.

He was sentenced to death the same year.

The execution was carried out after Hafeez’s second request for judicial review was rejected by the

Supreme Court, Arimuladi said.Hafeez was the fifth convict ex-

More than 140 people are on death row in Indonesia, mostly for drug crimes. About a third of them are foreigners.

SEMARAPURA - Coinciding with the full moon in the fifth month of Balinese calendar, the Kusamba customary village, Dawan, Klungkung, implemented Ngu-saba ritual in the Segara Temple, Sunday (Nov17). Interestingly, after implement-ing the ritual it was resumed with Nyepi Segara or Day of Silence at Sea for one day, Monday (Nov 18). In other words, residents were prohibited from doing any activity for a day at the local sea, both crossing in the three traditional harbors and catching fish by local fishermen.

(kmb16)

They hope a philanthropist buys them and donates them to a public institution.

having been recognized worldwide as a geopark in fact still retains a classical problem.

The rubbish alleged to come from the market seemed to have been deliberately dumped by a number of residents at the location. The region having been recognized as a geopark area should be well preserved. Not only that, a pile of plastic waste was also commonly

(ina)

(kmb30)

Mean-while, the miniature of ancient house and the complex in the south of museum complex is still closed to the public. The closure is based on security consideration.

Opening 15 years after the original “The Best Man,” Universal’s “The Best Man Holiday” opened strongly with $30.6 million.
