LONDON - Ennio Morricone is hoping it will be sixth time lucky at this year’s Oscars, where he has been nominated for the musical score for Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight”.

“I hope that this time there will be (Oscar victory),” 87-year-old Morricone told Reuters in an in-terview.

Morricone’s previous Oscar bids include his work for “Bugsy” and “The Untouchables”, but it is perhaps his loss for his critically-acclaimed “The Mission” score -- when Herbie Hancock scooped the honour for “Round Midnight” -- that is the sorest.

“I am not certain it will hap-pen so I am going there tranquil, serene, hopeful that it goes well,” said Morricone, who received an Honorary Academy Award in 2007 for “his magnificent and multifac-eted contributions to the art of film music”.

His “The Hateful Eight” work has already won a Golden Globe and a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award which he received in London on Tuesday after being unable to make the official ceremony due to his tour commitments.

“This is something amazing,

unexpected because in my type of work, you don’t think of the positive or negative consequences,” Morricone said.

“In general there aren’t negative ones. But sometimes there can also be negative consequences, that is the film doesn’t succeed or people don’t like the music. But this time, everything went well, thank good-ness. I am happy, amazed.”

Before the Feb. 28 Oscars, Mor-ricone will be honoured with a star on the Walk of Fame, with Taran-tino among the guest speakers at the ceremony on the famed Hollywood boulevard.

Born in Rome in 1928, Morri-cone began his film music compos-er career in 1961 with the Luciano Salce directed movie “Il Federale” and has since scored more than 450 films.

Asked if a particular period in his career stood out, Morricone said he had several preferred directors: “There are, but I won’t say, some whom I prefer, because it is not just one. I prefer to stay quiet.”

Morricone has had generations of movie fans humming his tunes from his work on “A Fistful of Dollars” and “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” with director Sergio Leone. (rtr)

The “Titanic” star has pretended to be American, Australian, Polish-Armenian and in her latest film, crime thriller “Triple 9”, a Russian-Israeli mafia boss.

“My M.O. (modus operandi) is just keep doing the unex-pected. Although I do also keep trying to play an English person but that just doesn’t keep happening for me at the moment,” Winslet told Reuters in an interview.

“That would be the ultimate challenge and then I’d have no dialect coach at all. No one to have my back and I would

be all by myself and probably more terrified than ever before. Wouldn’t that be novel?”

Winslet plays the bejewelled and designer-clad Irina Vlaslov in action-packed “Triple 9” about corrupt police and the criminal underworld -- a role she said “felt very out of my comfort zone”.

“I don’t know anyone like this woman. I didn’t like her. I didn’t empathize with her. I wanted that challenge of playing a character who really felt like a character,” she said.

Winslet is in the running for an Academy Award for her portrayal in “Steve Jobs” of the late Apple co-founder’s col-

league Joanna Hoffman. She won an Oscar for “The Reader”, an Emmy

Award for “Mildred Pierce”, a Best Spoken Word Album For Children Grammy for “Listen to the Storyteller”, meaning she is just missing a Tony

Award to complete the “EGOT” acronym of all four major entertainment honours.

Asked if going to Broadway was next, Winslet said: “Well I suppose it probably is now. And that’s more because of my 12-year-old son Joe, who ... is just obsessed with records.”

“So since he has learnt about this ‘EGOT’ thing, he’s like, ‘Mum you’ve gotta do it.’”

Winslet has backed her “Titanic” co-star Leonardo DiCaprio to win the best actor Oscar this year for “The Revenant”.

Both have been honoured this awards season, reuniting on the red carpet, much to the delight of “Titanic” fans, something that surprised Winslet. (rtr)

Based on the meeting, they decided three points of conclu-sion. 1: Tuban customary village rejects the Benoa Bay reclama-tion plan, 2: they propose the normalization of the flow of the rivers and estuaries around it, and 3: they urge the President of the Republic of Indonesia to revoke Presidential Regulation No.51/2014.

“What the majority of our customary villagers do not want the reclamation nor revitalization because the word ‘revitalization’ has been purposefully interpreted in way that they do not agree with. What people expected is the nor-malization of the rivers, estuaries, confluence and firth. Of course, this should be done by the district

government of Badung or Bali’s Provincial government -without the frills of tourist accommoda-tion development or anything of that nature,” he said.

Mendra added that there are five rivers and firths that are ex-pected to be normalized. They are the canal of Mati River, Nung-kak Firth, Dawa Firth, Cemagi Firth, and Aka Firth reaching to Gede Firth. By doing so, the Tuban fishermen will be able to remain at sea and even during low tides.

“We will report these results in writing to the president. Through this submission, we hope that the reclamation plan can be canceled and that the President will imme-diately revoke Presidential Regu-lation No. 51/2014, and that the local governments will perform normalization step as expected,” he said. EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. Presented daily in front of the Ranthambore Fort - the Park’s rare White Tiger Exhibit, “Harimau – From Predator to Prey” presents the compelling story of the world’s vanishing tiger population. Opening with a grand pageant relating the role of the tiger in Balinese history and mythology, the show reveals the native skills of these big cats at play, hunting, climbing and swimming.

While the Safari Park’s show will emphasize the wide range of instinctual and natural abilities of these “kings of the jungle” without resorting to contrived circus behavior, visitors will also witness the positive

bond that develops between these cats and the people who care for captive populations of tigers. Trust, affection and the Park’s continuing desire to enrich the daily experience of all its animals have created play-ful interactions between keepers and tigers that allow hand feeding, bottle feeding and ready obedience to keep-ers’ commands.

Admired and feared, tigers have been ruthlessly destroyed in by man order that their golden pelts could be displayed as trophies and their body part harvested as sham elixirs and medicines. The last Bali tiger was shot in 1937, forever eliminating

another subspecies of an animal that has seen its numbers diminish by 93% over the past century.

William Santoso, general manager of the Bali Safari and Marine Park, commenting on the latest addition to the Park’s range of shows and attrac-tions, said: “We hope that visitors at-tending the ‘Harimau – From Preda-tor to Prey’ will be both entertained and emotionally moved by the very real threat of extinction faced by the word’s tiger population. The message is clear: if all elements of society do not unite to protect tigers and their shrinking habitat the spectacular big cat show now available on a daily basis at the Park could become over time quite literally a vanishing act.”

“Harimau – From Predator to Prey” is presented daily at 11:30 am at the Bali Safari and Marine Park without additional charge to Park visitors.

Bali Safari and Marine Park Premieres New Big Cat Show

As part of a continuing commitment to educate, propagate and conserve endangered members of the animal kingdom, Bali Safari and Marine Park has dedicated months of careful preparation in bringing it latest animal show - “Harimau - From Predator to Prey” to the public.

Chief of the Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency, Gede Suy-asa, amid the training said that the tourist guides get the training with the materials such as the basic guiding techniques and profes-sional ethics of tourist guides. The materials were presented by speakers from government institution, tourism practitioners from the Indonesia Tourist Guides Association (HPI) and academi-cian. The training is so important considering the tourism world is facing a tight competition in line with the enactment of the ASEAN

Economic Community (AEC). Suyasa worried that unqualified tour guides in the region will lose competitiveness against the tour guides from outside the region.

“This is very important be-cause the AEC required the tourist guides are able to compete against the others so that if the human resource capabilities are unqualified it may be less com-petitive,” he said.

Regent Putu Agus Suradnyana asserted that some aspects must be improved by tourist guides includ-ing the ethics and competency of

their field. The regent exemplified how tourist guides can provide correct explanation about tourist destinations in Buleleng. “I want to remind that the knowledge on the ethics and insight of tourist guides should be improved. Do not let tourist guides provide in-correct information due to lack of perspectives, so that it will have a negative impact on the tourism in our region,” he affirmed.

On the other hand, the regent also stated that the arrangement of tourism in the region is com-menced from internal aspect and building infrastructure. This effort will be helpful to link the tourism villages with sur-rounding objects. Currently, the construction of infrastructure in Buleleng has been done. Besides, tourism is also developed with the concept of community-based tourism. (kmb38)

BANGLI- Ahead of Kuningan feast, the price of some staples and ritual paraphernalia rose sharply. The increase was more severe than ahead of Galungan. Presumably this happens due to declining crop yields, while the demand is high. Some consumers are shocked by this condition.

A merchant at Kidul Market, Bangli, Jro Mangku Budi, said on Wednesday (Feb. 17) that price of most agricultural commodities like the large chili has soared. Three days ago, it cost only IDR 22,000 per kilogram but it has now reached IDR 40,000, while small chili remained stable in the range of IDR 18,000. He was also surprised with the increase in the price of tomatoes from IDR 4,000 to IDR 10,000 per ki-logram and garlic from IDR 22,000 to IDR 30,000. “It is the price of medium quality, while the better quality is much more expensive,” he said while serving customers.

This merchant from Kintamani also added that the surge in the prices is more severe than ahead of Galungan. At that time, the price range of large chili was IDR 18,000 and tomato reached IDR 4,000. He alleged it happened due to crop of farmers fell as a result of bad season. “These prices are usually caused by the incomparable supply to demand. However, it is the first rise of this magnitude,” he explained. Despite the increase, he admitted to be lucky because the sales are still relatively

stable. “Our sales are still stable,” he added.

The price increase also occurred in ritual paraphernalia. Young coconut leaf, for instance, was usually sold for IDR 14,000 to IDR 18,000 per bundle. A 100-percent price increase occurred in the garden balsam from IDR 12,000 to IDR 25,000 per kilogram. Likewise, price hike also happened to marigold from IDR 18,000 to IDR 28,000 per kilogram.

“Price hike of flowers has occurred since two days ago. It is far different from the price ahead of Galungan reaching IDR 10,000,” said the mer-chant Ni Nengah Mustari. Merchant that sells on the north side of this mar-ket also said that the surge in the prices happened due to the little harvest. All this time, she was just getting flowers from Klungkung. “People need them for ritual so that they are still sought after,” she said.

One of consumers, Dewa Ayu Anom, said that she was surprised by the price hike as different from ahead of Galungan. Nevertheless, she still purchased because it became a staple. “Due to the price hike, automatically the spending will surge. So, we must calculate the spending smartly so as to get all the needs,” she said. Based on observation, the ritual paraphernalia like local and imported fruits are also experiencing a surge in the price range of 10 to 20 percent. (kmb45)

SINGArAJA - A number of tourist guides in Buleleng participated in training conducted by the Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency, Tuesday (Feb. 16). The tourist guides are involved in managing the tourism potential at 10 tourism villages stipulated by local government. It is meant to improve performance and capabilities of human resources in managing the tourism potential at their respective home village.

NEW YORK - Many designers get inspiration for their fashion collections from the art world. This season, Marchesa designers Geor-gina Chapman and Keren Craig chose the art of famed American portrait painter John Singer Sargent, who died in 1925, to inspire their always sumptuous, red-carpet ready designs.

“Each girl is going to feel like her own portrait ... so we have dif-ferent characters weaving through the collection,” Chapman said in a backstage interview. “But they all tie together, they are all glamorous, ethereal, a Marchesa woman.”

Specifically, the designers were aiming at capturing “the ultra-feminine strength “ of the women that Sargent painted, and as always, the dresses and gowns were nothing if not ultra-feminine.

There were sleek, fitted sil-houettes as well as princess-style gowns. There was lots of lace and

intricate beading, of course, and brocades and silk flowers.

There were, as the designers described them, “pops of color,” for example a dramatic red-to-black ombre tulle ballgown with a tiered skirt and laser-cut organza flowers. There were more casual cocktail dresses too, such as an amethyst-to-lilac ombre fringe dress with floral beading.

On the more fairy-tale side of things, there were a few dresses in filmy pastel tulle, such as a duck egg tulle Grecian gown with billowing sleeves.

Besides the ornate beading, the designers made use of feathers, too, as in a dusty blue ostrich feather cocktail dress with an organza sash.

With the Oscars coming up soon, the designers have yet to find out if their designs will make their way to the red carpet. “We hope!” they both said in unison. (ap)

Meditation on control and release, at Proenza Schouler

First, the designing duo — Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough — cite artist Frank Stella as one of the influences on their new collection, and the Whitney’s exhibit of Stella’s work just closed. In fact, the fashion show was held in the same beautiful room overlooking the Hudson River.

And second, each Proenza Schouler garment arguably resembles a Stella artwork — with colorful layers con-structed together in ingenious ways.

The designers presented a runway show that was a meditation on control and release. The control was at the top of the body — with laces and knots and tight-fitting tops.

“And then it all falls into kind of a slouchier silhou-ette,” McCollough said back-stage. “The trousers are big, and the shoes are a bit lower, for a woman to be able to walk fast, with freedom and confidence.”

Beyond the concept of control and release, the idea of process and materials was key, and it harked back to American art of the ‘60s and ‘70s.

“It’s about the process, not the outcome,” McCol-lough said.

Regardless, the outcome seemed pretty pleasing to the crowd, which included actress Liv Tyler. Especially appealing were figure-hug-ging knit dresses that ap-peared to display control, with their shape, and release, with their softness, at the same time. (ap)

SURABAYA - Do not dispose of used batteries haphazardly because they contain toxic (hazardous ma-terials) that will then be released into nature and contaminate the surrounding area.

“Batteries contain heavy metal compounds consisting of mercury, manganese, lead, nickel, lithium and cadmium. These compounds can contaminate groundwater mak-ing it hazardous for human con-sumption,” said Aunurohim to Bali Post in Surabaya on Wednesday (Feb.17).

Used batteries are still generally

discarded in normal trash bins. AL-though this may seem trivial, many people do not realize how harmful this is to humans and another living beings, explained Aunurohim.

This lecturer in the Department of Biological Sciences, at The Sepuluh November Institute of Technology, said that disposing of used batteries along with other trash is wrong. Used batteries should be separated from other garbage so that they can be recycled instead of harming human health.

Anurohim explained further that, the long term effect of expo-

sure to used batteries is harmful to the health of certain vital organs, particularly the viscera ìPeople who consume water that has been exposed to used batteries, are likely to experience kidney failure, symptoms of liver damage and other health problems as a result of certain heavy metals,î he said.

So far, there has been no dissemi-nation of information to the general public on how to dispose of used batteries correctly. “ There needs to be a place provided to public for disposing of used batteries such as glass or plastic bins placed in the

doorways of shopping centres,î he suggested.

One of the ways to overcome the toxic and hazardous waste of used batteries, said Aunurohim, is by performing landfill sanitation that is done by calculating the width and height of a pile of garbage. ìCur-rently, in Indonesia, landfill sanita-tion is only available in Jakarta,î he added.

Anurohim who is also chair-man of the Advisory Committee for the Department of Biological Sciences, went on to say that each individual needs to become aware

about how to dispose of batteries so that this toxic waste can be properly localized and not pollute the vicinity.

Not only that, Aunurohim also alluded to the hazards of used batteries on campus that could be curbed or even eliminated by collecting used batteries into a single place. “The institution can also do recycling independently or in cooperation with relevant agencies like the Surabaya En-vironmental Agency (BLH) with the sanitation landfill,” he said. Buleleng’s district government is now diverting their devel-opment programs and prioritizing the budget for 2017 for land acquisition to support the development of shortcut road.

This was stated by the Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Surad-nyana, from his his office on Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 17) said that during a meeting with the National Road Atuhorities some time ago, he explained that the new road project had received the approval of the Minister of Public Works and Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, and that the plan was to built the initial road section that would then be extended to ten other locations.

“Having lobbied for the desire to the people of Buleleng to have a shortcut between the south and the north built, this project has been approved. Political lobbying also lays an important role in the development of our region” said Regent Suradnyana.

If the road can be completed before July 2016, the regent will delay physical development programs that were slated for 2017 so that lasts years budget can go towards the road project, including things like acquiring land for where the road will be built.

The shortcut will begin to be constructed at Bedugul-Singa-raja road, in front of Hotel Pondok Indah. A lane will then take a sharp turn so that travel time between Denpasar and SIngaraja can be cut down to one hour. ìWe are ready to postpone the development of other sectors and focus on building this short-cut that will general benefit other development in Buleleng, particularly economic developmentî he added.

Head of the Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency, Gede Suyasa, said that shorter travel time will increase the number of tourists who will visit North Bali the having multiple benefits for the local community. So far, the development of tourism in North Bali has been hampered by its distance from the main airport which has discouraged people from visiting Buleleng. Most people end up spending their holidays in South Bali.

ìAccess to Singaraja, that winds through Wanagiri, is often complained about by travellers who feel that it takes too long to get there. Many people are therefor reluctant to visit our region. The creation of a shortcut would be very beneficial to the development of tourism, SMEs and investment in this areaî concluded Suyasa. (kmb38)

Central govt approves Bedugul-Singaraja shortcut

SINGARAJA - The planned construction of the Singaraja-Bedugul road that would provide a shortcut between these tow locations, seems to have become stalled at the level of discourse. The strong desire to shorten the distance betwwn the south and the north started to get a blessing from from central government and so the government of Buleleng started to develop strategies to fully support the mega project.

MANILA - For all the criticism over his anti-gay comment and the loss of a lucrative endorsement deal with Nike Inc, Philippines world boxing champion Mann Pacquiao still looks set to win election to the country’s senate in May, ac-cording to political analysts.

Nike, the world’s largest sportswear maker, cancelled its contract on Wednes-day with the 37 year-old boxer-turned-politician, who has been the world cham-pion in eight different weight divisions, after he described gays as “worse than animals”.

But voters in the mostly Catholic Philippines appear unready to abandon sup-port for the country’s biggest sporting hero, who is running for one of 12 vacant senatorial seats up for grabs in the May 9 election.

The fighter has apologised for the comments, and analysts reckoned the contro-versy has caused limited damage to his campaign.

“Pacquiao has clearly offended the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community with his comments on same sex marriage, but this group represents a minority and this will not affect the boxer’s popularity among the voters,” Benito Lim, political science professor at the Jesuit-run Ateneo de Manila University, told Reuters.

“He may still win in the elections.”Many ordinary Filipinos believe Pacquiao made a mistake in his remarks on

same-sex marriage because he hurt some sensibilities. Many are more interested in what happens in April, when Pacquiao tries to win

back the WBO welterweight title he lost last year to Floyd Mayweather. (rtr)

Mugabe turns 92 on Sunday and, judging by those com-ments, has no intention of stepping down - despite being Africa’s oldest leader and the only president Zimbabwe has known since independence in 1980.

His life presidency aspirations could frustrate the feuding big-hitters of his ruling ZANU-PF party who have been trying for years to position themselves for a post-Mugabe political era.

They will also fuel criticism from opponents of the govern-ment, who say the internal conflict is distracting it from its job of dealing with a stagnating economy and responding to the worst drought in a generation - charges denied by ministers.

“Amid this looming starvation, coupled with an economy on the ropes, no one is paying attention to this national crisis. There is no government response as ZANU-PF is too pre-occupied with the succession issue of President Mugabe,” main opposi-tion leader Morgan Tsvangirai said on Tuesday.

Critics blame Mugabe for many of the problems facing the country. They say his policies, including the seizures and redistribution of white-owned commercial farms, drove one of Africa’s most promising economies into nearly a decade of deep recession until 2008 that cut its output almost in half.

They also say Zimbabwe’s sluggish economy and low productivity - the jobless rate is around 85 percent - has left it ill-equipped to deal with the drought, which has left 3 million people in need of food aid, about a quarter of the population.

For his part, Mugabe defends his land seizures as necessary to correct colonial injustices and says the economy has fallen victim to sanctions by Western countries that are punishing him for seizing white-owned land. (rtr)

SINGARAJA - For some people, the hobby of swimming has been a commonplace. Dif-ferent swimming action was carried out by a foreigner from the Netherland named Anneke, 78. This middle-aged woman swam by moving her legs and hands slowly as far as 2 kilometers. She swam endlessly while exploring the Binaria Beach Lovina and stopped in front of the beach of Hotel Adirama.

Her face seems not tireless. Every time coming to Bali, she always visits Buleleng to enjoy the natural beauty of the beach. She has done such swimming with long distance for the third time. This woman born in Bogor, West Java, successfully completed the distance of 2 kilometers in 1 hour and 5 minutes. All this time she has been known to local tourism players as a nature lover, and often contributes to the coral reef. “I am grateful for being able to pass the challenge to swim as far as 2 kilometers. It is the third time for me to go down swimming

at no longer young age. It is an expression of my love to the environment and preservation of coral reef at Lovina,” she said, Wednesday (Feb. 17), when unwinding after swimming along 2 kilometers.

The Marketing Division Head, the Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency, Wayan Sugusta, assessed the measures undertaken by Anneke poses an expression of her love for Buleleng, no exception for her love to coral reef. “We appre-ciate and express gratitude for her contribution to promote Lovina. Swimming activity along 2 kilometer becomes a maritime destination and attract other travelers to North Bali,” he said.

Her action to swim as far as 2 kilometers was supported by Anik Suharyani, the owner of Adirama Hotel. Anik is supported by her Dutch husband, Mr. Ruud. All this time, they are also involving the Sinar Bahari tourism fishermen at Kaliasem in the conservation of coral reef since December 2015. (kmb34)

SEMARAPURA - Brown sugar makers at Besan village, Dawan, are lately happy. Ahead of the Kuningan feast, the demand for brown sugar began to soar. Some sugar makers are overwhelmed and even reject the demand of collectors because they cannot produce brown sugar in large quantities. “So far, the demand for sugar already jumped ahead of Galungan. As a result, I cannot meet the demand of collectors,” said Ni Luh Wirasmini, Wednesday (Feb. 17).

According to her, she can produce 15 kilograms of brown sugar a day. However, she does not produce the entire sugar. All this time, she was doing business with the assistance of her husband, Komang Sarta, who must climb more than 10 coconut trees every morning to tap and get a sweet sap of the coconut trees. “I’ve produced brown sugar since 1980 when newly getting married. It is taught by my husband and in-laws having done the business through genera-tions,” she said.

Additionally, Ni Luh Wirasmini who is also the Besan Women Farmer group leader admitted that the price of brown sugar started to rise because the demand is high. Before Galungan, the price of brown sugar at distributor’s level is IDR 25,000 per kilogram, while the current price began to rise to IDR 30,000 per kilogram. “The price hike is IDR 5,000, sir. The price increase is also influenced by the demand and raw materials of sugar namely palm wine hard to get,” said Ni Luh Wirasmini.

In her simple kitchen, Luh Wirasmini looked so busy cooking sweet toddy that will be processed into brown sugar. She cooked the sweet toddy over hot coals of fire from wood-burning stoves until getting thickened.

At least, Ni Luh Wirasmini should be in the kitchen to produce brown sugar for three hours every day. Moreover, the typical brown sugar of Besan village has been well known as Dawan sugar for its enjoy-ment throughout Bali. (119)

Gas prices will jump more than sixtyfold — the first increase of any kind in about 20 years. Yet drivers will still be able to fill their tanks for pennies in this South American country where gasoline has long been so heavily subsidized that it is virtually free.

The price of premium gasoline will rise from 0.1 bolivar a liter to 6 bolivars per liter, and regular gasoline will jump from 0.07 bolivar to 1 bolivar per liter. In contrast, a beer costs around 300 bolivars while a basket of strawberries goes for 800 bolivars. Calculated at the widely used black market currency exchange rate, the price per gallon will be a few U.S. cents.

Maduro said the increased gaso-line revenue will finance the govern-ment’s social programs. “We must charge for gas,” he said. “I ask that the people welcome and support this new system.”

Gasoline prices are a touchy issue in Venezuela, where memories are still vivid from 1989 riots in Caracas that erupted after the proposal of a series of austerity measures includ-ing a hike in gas prices.

Maduro also announced that the strongest of the country’s official

exchange rates, used for essential goods like food and medicine, would be changing from 6.30 bolivars to the U.S. dollar to 10 bolivars to the dollar. Meanwhile, the bolivar is worth about 1,000 to the dollar on the black market. The economic measures come as Maduro fights for his political survival.

Oil accounts 95 percent of Ven-ezuela’s export earnings, and plum-meting world prices have helped push its state-led economy into a deep recession, with chronic short-ages, empty store shelves and soar-ing inflation.

Opposition leaders took control of Congress in January for the first time in more than a decade and have been on a collision course with the socialist president ever since.

Lawmakers are weighing several options for removing Maduro from office, including shortening his term, and calling a constitutional referen-dum. But many fear the Supreme Court, which has not ruled against the executive branch since the late President Hugo Chavez took office in 1999, would simply overturn these efforts.

Opposition leaders quickly dis-missed Wednesday’s measures as

insufficient to right the flagging economy.

Earlier in the day, the opposition’s top vote-getter, two-time opposition presidential candidate Henrique Capriles, called for a presidential recall referendum.

Maduro’s approval ratings have languished in the 20 percent range

for most of his term, but a recall battle would be complicated. To force a recall referendum, the oppo-sition would need to gather nearly 4 million signatures. And if a referen-dum was held, the president would be removed only if the number of anti-Maduro votes exceeded the number of votes he got in the 2013

election.A voter referendum might be

a longer and more risky path than some of the other recall options, but Capriles said it was one the govern-ment would be forced to recognize.

“Now is the time,” he said. “They will not be able to overturn a referendum.”(ap)

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — The United Arab Emirates has thrown its support behind a plan involving oil powerhouses Russia and Saudi Arabia to freeze oil production levels in an attempt to halt the slide in crude prices.

The OPEC member’s energy minister said in a statement carried by state news agency WAM on Thursday that the UAE would back a cap if other OPEC members and Russia agreed.

Russia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Venezuela announced their willingness to cap output at last month’s levels at a surprise meet-ing in Qatar earlier this week, but only if other major oil producers join them.

OPEC member Kuwait has since said it supports the proposal. Iran on Wednesday signaled it too supports the proposal, but it gave no indication it plans to cap its own output.(ap)

TOKYO — Japan’s trade balance returned to deficit in January, with a shortfall of 646 billion yen ($5.65 billion) as exports fell 13 percent from the year before, led by an 18 percent plunge in the value of shipments to China.

Customs data released Thursday show exports dropped to 5.35 trillion yen ($46 billion) while imports plunged 18 percent to 6 trillion yen ($52 billion). The deficit compared with a surplus of 140.2 billion yen in December.

China’s economic slowdown has taken much of the steam out of the recovery, of the world’s third-largest economy. A report by the Japan External Trade Organization, released Wednesday, showed Japan’s total trade with China fell 12 percent last year from the year before.

Exports of machinery to China fell 27 percent in 2015 from the year before, reflecting a slowdown in

manufacturing investment, while exports of chemicals, iron and steel and vehicles also dropped, the report said. Overall, Japan’s exports to Asia also fell, by 18 percent.

Japan’s exports to the U.S. slipped 5.3 percent from the year before to 1.13 trillion yen ($9.8 billion) in January while imports fell 9.7 percent to 584.8 billion yen ($5.1 billion).

Exports of transport equipment rose 26 percent, with cars, trucks and ships showing strong growth. Machinery and chemicals exports also grew at a double-digit pace.

Japan has mostly run trade deficits since it closed nuclear reactors following the 2011 accident at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi plant and stepped up imports of oil and gas. The plunge in oil prices has helped reduce energy-related imports, which fell 45 percent from a year earlier in January.(ap)

TABANAN - Over the past twenty years, seven families at Baturiti Kaja hamlet belonging to Telengisan subgroup, Baturiti, Kerambitan, has not got a direct power connection from the PLN. To get the electricity, they are forced to join the electricity at other’s home having got the connection. But their location to the connecting home averagely reaches five kilometers.

A resident in the area of Telengisan sub-group, I Wayan Adnyana, 35, said on Tuesday (Feb. 16) that to be able to get the electricity, he is relying on the connection to other’s home at Belong hamlet, Baturiti. Before getting the electricity connection, with six other families he got electricity from an independent generator set. After 2008, he joined connection to other’s home. “We have joined power connection to the home of a resident named Wayan Kemper since 2008. Previously, we used diesel engine,” said Adnyana.

He said that around 2011 the PLN Tabanan made a survey at Telengisan area, but after that only some 35 families got direct connection. The home area of Adnyana and six other families is slightly far from the existing poles. Besides, another reason why his home did not qualify for the survey was due to investment factor and the number of residents was minimal at the time.

Manager of the PLN Distribution Bali for

Tabanan Region, I Made Jiwa, admitted to be surprised when hearing there are people in Ta-banan getting no direct connection to PLN. The man who began working in Tabanan early 2016 does not know about the people having not got direct power connection from the PLN. “We will immediately deploy a team to survey and check the real conditions in the field,” he said.

He mentioned there are some possibilities causing the Telengisan subgroup to have not got direct electricity connection from the PLN network. For example, the family applying for electricity with the capacity of 450 VA or 900 VA, posing the subsidized electricity, must be classified into disadvantaged families by includ-ing the receipt of assistance recipient from the government like the KPS, KIS, KIP or KKS. “The applicant just needs to attach one of the receipts,” he said.

The other factors are the PLN network or the last utility pole in the region is away from people’s homes. As for the network in the form of a power pole, if it remains within the radius of less than 100 meters from the last electric pole in the region, the PLN is ready to put new network installation. “If less than 100 meters, the PLN is ready to assist the installation of the new network, and does not cost anything,” said Jiwa. MANGUPURA - The existence of traditional fish-ermen in coastal areas of Badung district will be pro-tected by Regional Bylaw (Perda). The draft is being prepared by special committee of fishermen empower-ment in the Badung House of Representatives and will be completed in March.

Chairman of the special committee for fishermen empower-ment of the Badung House of Representatives, I Gede Suardika, said that his committee has disseminated the matter back to community leaders and reabsorb aspirations of local fishermen to be enacted into regional bylaw.

“In this dissemination program, we will absorb the aspirations of local fishermen in appropriate with the legal instrument cre-ated and explained that the government policies are aimed at the goodness of coastal communities in the future,” said Suardika, Monday (Feb. 15).

According to him, his committee will perform data collection on the whole group of fishermen at Kedonganan village, Badung, that really have profession as fishermen and not tourism fisher-men. Thus, the government will have clarity when channeling aid to coastal communities.

“So far, the regional bylaw drafting has reached 80 percent with slightly adopted from the East Java Fisheries and Maritime Affairs when making a comparative study to the region some time ago,” he said.

With the enactment of the regulation, he said, overall data col-lection of catch fishermen and cultivation fishermen as a whole can be recorded thoroughly. The regional bylaw will also provide legal instrument for fish cultivation fishermen in order to get a help through subsidies or insurance in case of crop failure.

“We will also optimize the function of fishermen cooperatives in the area so that fish marketing can work well. This regional bylaw can provide a legal instrument for fishermen in order to further increase their welfare,” he explained.

Additionally, the regional bylaw draft being prepared will optimize the function of fish auction base (TPI) at Sangeh vil-lage, Abiansemal. “We will immediately set forth this regional bylaw to protect fishermen whose profession is really catching fish and fishermen making freshwater fish cultivation,” he said. ISTANBUL - Turkish Prime Minis te r Ahmet Davutog lu blamed a Syrian Kurdish militia fighter working with Kurdish militants inside Turkey for a suicide car bombing that killed 28 people in the capital Ankara, and he vowed retaliation in both Syria and Iraq.

A car laden with explosives deto-nated next to military buses as they waited at traffic lights near Turkey’s armed forces’ headquarters, parlia-ment and government buildings in the administrative heart of Ankara late on Wednesday.

Davutoglu said the attack was clear evidence that the YPG, a Syr-ian Kurdish militia that has been supported by the United States in the fight against Islamic State in northern Syria, was a terrorist organisation and said that Turkey, a NATO member, expected coop-eration from its allies in combating the group.

Within hours, Turkish warplanes bombed bases in northern Iraq of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has waged a three-decade insurgency against the

Turkish state and which Davutoglu accused of collaborating in the car bombing.

Turkey’s armed forces would continue their shelling of recent days of YPG positions in northern Syria, Davutoglu said, promising that those responsible would “pay the price”.

“Yesterday’s attack was directly targeting Turkey and the perpetra-tor is the YPG and the divisive terrorist organization PKK. All necessary measures will be taken against them,” Davutoglu said in a televised speech.

The PYD, the political arm of the YPG, denied involvement in the bombing, while a senior member of the PKK said he did not know who was responsible.

The attack was the latest in a series of bombings in the past year mostly blamed on Islamic State militants.

Turkey is getting dragged ever deeper into the war in neighbouring Syria and is trying to contain some of the fiercest violence in decades in its predominantly Kurdish south-east. (rtr)

In a new draft deal sent to EU leaders overnight and seen by Reu-ters, officials tried to overcome dif-ferences over the most contentious areas - namely migration curbs and financial safeguards - but much was left for debate in talks later in the day.

Cameron is keen to end the week in Brussels with a deal that he can hail as a victory and then start campaigning to keep Britain inside the 28-member bloc before a referendum most officials expect will be held in late June.

“I think there is an appetite at all levels to try and get there and take as long as it takes us to get there,” said a senior EU diplomat

of the two-day summit which ends on Friday.

“The mood around town is that people think that if we don’t get it solved now, we’re never going to solve it.”

Cameron, struggling to sell a deal to an increasingly sceptical British public and many in his own Conservative Party, has spent weeks touring European capitals to secure a deal, hold a referendum and try to put to rest the divisions over Europe that have dogged his party for years.

He has called for reform in four areas: measures to curb migration, safeguards to protect London’s fi-nancial district from decisions bind-

ing the 19 members using the euro currency, for Britain to be excluded from “ever closer union” and for greater competition in the bloc.

EU officials have said some leaders were still concerned that Cameron’s demands would en-courage other countries to demand changes to their membership agree-ments, but the new draft signalled that especially on migration, any solution was tailormade to take note of Britain’s specific welfare system.

Among the details, there will be debate over the wording of the safeguards for London’s financial sector, which France fears could give Britain an advantage, on any commitment to future amendments of the bloc’s founding treaties and on how long Cameron can apply a measure to curb welfare payments. “I am also proud of the Indone-sian security personnel,” the head of state noted at a session on ter-rorism before leaders attending the US-ASEAN Summit here, Tuesday.Jokowi was invited to be the first speaker at the special session on counterterrorism.

He acknowledged the sympathy and attention given by the United States and other ASEAN member countries following the terror attack in Jakarta on January 14, 2016.

In a relatively short period of time, the situation was brought under control, and life in Jakarta returned to normal, he pointed out.

“But, we remain vigilant against ter-ror threats,” the president added.

He emphasized the importance of moderation, peace, and toler-ance during the session attended by President Barack Obama.

Filipino Ambassador to Indone-sia, Maria Isleta, said her country offers many benefits to Indonesians wanting to study in the Philip-pines.

The two countries are geographi-cally close, the Philippines universi-ties are of good quality, education fee and living costs are affordable,

English is the main language used in the class room, and its culture is similar to Indonesia.

JAYAPURA - The Jayawijaya Resort Police officers are question-ing three witnesses on the alleged attempt to open an office of the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (UMLWP) in Wamena, Papua, on Tuesday.

Papua Regional Police Chief Insp. Gen. Paulus Waterpauw stated here on Thursday that the three individuals were being questioned as witnesses related to an attempt to open the UMLWP office in Wamena.

The UMLWP is a forum of a group of separatists who are trying to secede from the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). Therefore, the authorities have banned their exis-tence and will seek clarification from the coordinators MH and EW over the alleged attempt to open the UMLWP office, Waterpauw stressed.

Waterpauw said he had received reports that no inauguration ceremony was held for the UMLWP office in Wamena on Tuesday, and only a nameplate was installed beside the of-fice of the Papua Customary Council (DAP) in Wamena.

“Earlier, on Monday (Feb. 15), the new office of the DAP in Jalan Trikora Maplima, Wamena, Jayawijaya Dis-trict, was inaugurated as its old office was razed by fires in 2014,” Water-pauw remarked. He said the event was used by the separatists to install a nameplate of the UMLWP office.

“There was no ceremonial event held in that case and was not attended

by five thousand people contrary to what was disseminated through social media networks. After negotiations, the nameplate was finally removed and was confiscated by the Jayawijaya police in Wamena,” the Papua Police chief explained.

In the meantime, President Joko Widodo, through his special staff for communication Johan Budi, denied rumors that the Free Papua Movement had opened a representative office in Wamena, Papua Province.

“I have confirmed it to the coordi-nating minister for political, legal and security affairs and have found that the rumors regarding the establishment of a representative office of the Free Papua Movement (reportedly with the support of several countries) are not true,” Johan stated at the State Palace complex in Jakarta on Wednesday.

According to Johan, the office of the coordinating minister for political, legal and security affairs is now coor-dinating with the Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI) to implement a persuasive approach. The presidential spokesman expressed hope that the rumors would not trigger chaos in Papua.

He affirmed that the government disagreed with the separatist move-ment opening a representative office on behalf of a certain group.

“What is sure is that no representa-tive office of the Free Papua Move-ment has been opened. There is no such a thing,” Johan clarified. (ant)

PARIS - Paris bid leaders said almost all of the city’s proposed venues for the 2024 Olympics were already built or would be temporary facilities as the French capital on Wednesday unveiled its plans to stage the Summer Games.

The race for hosting rights is now officially un-derway with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) having received the four candidature files of Paris, Budapest, Rome and Los Angeles.

At a ceremony in the Philharmonie de Paris concert hall, the French unveiled 36 venues in es-sentially two zones - central Paris and the Paris-St Denis area, a few km north of the city centre.

Bid leaders promised that “95 percent of the

venues” would be “already existing or temporary to minimize investment”.

In front of Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo and Prime minister Manuel Valls, they said several events would take place at prestigious venues such as the Stade de France (athletics), Roland Garros (tennis) and the Bercy Arena (basketball).

Temporary structures would be situated in his-toric locations with equestrian events being held at the Palace of Versailles and beach volleyball at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.

Among the facilities yet to be built are the me-dia, Olympic and Paralympic villages in St Denis plus the aquatics centre. (rtr)

The 23-year-old Haryanto will make his race debut in Australia when the season starts on March 20.

“Melbourne will be a huge moment for me, my country, supporters and fans and I want to thank everyone who’s been with me since I started in single seaters; 2016 is my chance to reward that faith and represent Asia in F1,” Haryanto said.

His signing as team mate to German rookie Pascal Weh-rlein completes the grid for the 2016 season.

Haryanto, who finished fourth in the GP2 feeder series last season with three race wins, will be the third Southeast Asian driver to compete in Formula One since the champi-onship started in 1950.

The other two were Malaysian Alex Yoong, with Minardi in 2001-2002, and Thailand’s Prince Bira (Birabongse Bhanudej) in the 1950s.

Haryanto was already the first Indonesian to drive a Formula One car, having tested with Manor’s predecessors Virgin Racing in 2010.

The Indonesian’s arrival in Formula One spells disap-pointment for Britain’s Will Stevens, American Alexander Rossi and Spaniard Roberto Merhi, who all raced for Manor last season when the team was known as Marussia.

“Rio’s huge following in Indonesia is great for the team and for F1. They are keen to see him on the grid and we’re confident that we’ll see him enjoying some exciting battles in the year ahead,” Manor owner Stephen Fitzpatrick said.

Manor failed to score a point in 2015 but have rung the changes since then, with new management and drivers as well as Mercedes engines in place of ageing Ferrari ones.

Haryanto’s place in the team had depended on raising funds in Indonesia, with Manor seeking 15 million euros ($16.71 million) according to local media.

The driver has been backed by state-owned Indonesian oil and gas company Pertamina but it was not immediately known how much they had contributed towards securing the drive. (rtr)

WANAGIRI - Central Bali with it’s amazing tropical landscapes is home to some of the most scerene waterfalls. Big and small, they are all beauti-ful in it’s own way unique. You don’t need to visit all the waterfalls, but include at least one on your list of things to do in Bali.

Banyumala Waterfall is one of the lesser known waterfalls in Bali. It is located north of Lake Buyan in northcentral Bali. Unlike many trails this is a completely natural trail and rarely hiked trail. Just past the waterfall is a water curtain of various trickles of water down a wall of lush rocks.

Rating and length – moderately easy (physically) –

moderately difficult to walk – 1 km – 30-40 minutes round trip

How to get there – Banyumala is located in Wanag-iri district near the northeastern end of Lake Buyan. It is on the crater rim road between Munduk and the main highway from Singaraja to Denpasar. This is not an easy waterfall to find. There is a faded sign leading down a small rural road away from Lake Buyan. This is the easy part. After this there are a series of painted orange arrows with a several left and right turns ultimately ending up on a single track motorcycle trail. It is recommended that you try to hire a guide. Luis Suarez also scored for Barcelona in Gijon in a game postponed from De-cember because of the Club World Cup. The win gave Barcelona 60 points, six more than Atletico Madrid and seven more than third-place Real Madrid after 24 rounds.

Messi opened the scoring with a well-struck low shot in the 25th minute and added his second from close range in the 31st, four minutes after Sporting equalized with striker Carlos Castro in a breakaway at the El Molinon Stadium.

Suarez missed a chance to add to his league-leading 24 goals when his 62nd-minute penalty was saved by Sporting goalkeeper Ivan Cuellar, but the Uruguay striker sealed the victory five minutes later after a nice move inside the area.

This time there was no controversy with the way the penalty was taken. Messi and Suarez attracted the world’s attention on Sunday when the Argen-tine star rolled the ball to the side for Suarez’s goal instead of taking the shot himself.

Messi is the Spanish league’s all-time scoring leader with 301 goals in 334 games. He has scored 15 this season.

“It’s a privilege to be able to count on Leo,” Barcelona coach Luis Enrique said. “We faced some difficulties against a team that knows how to defend well, but I think we played a very complete game.”

The win — Barcelona’s 12th in the last 13 games — extended the club’s record streak of 31 games without a loss. The Catalan club hasn’t been de-feated since a 2-1 result at Sevilla in the league’s seventh round in October.

Barcelona’s biggest league lead had been four points, in the 12th and 13th rounds in November. No other team has had more than a two-point advantage atop the standings this season.

“It’s not been easy because our oppo-nents have been playing against us with extra motivation,” Barcelona defender Aleix Vidal said. “What matters in the

end is regular-i ty and we’ve been do ing a very good job so far. We have to keep this going, we can’t afford a letdown.”

We d n e s d a y ’ s game was postponed from the 16th round because Barcelona was playing at FIFA’s Club World Cup in Japan, a tournament it won. Sport-ing remains 16th in the 20-team standings with 23 points, two above relegation zone.

Messi got on the board with a long-range shot that hit the far corner, then scored with a quick strike after a pass by Suarez.

Just after having his shot from the spot saved by Cuellar, Suarez scored his 24th league goal with a left-footed shot into the far corner after fending off a de-fender inside the area.

Sporting scored just two minutes after Barcelona opened the scoring, with Castro getting behind the defense to steer home a low cross by Alex Me-nendez. Neymar struck the post with a remarkable curling shot in the 33rd.

The game was extra spe-cial for coach Luis Enrique, who is from Gijon and grew up together with Sporting coach Abe-lardo Fernandez. They later played together for Barcelona in the 1990s and remain good friends.(ap)

Julian Draxler’s debut season at VfL Wolfsburg after a 35-million euro transfer from Schalke 04 was below ex-pectations until he started paying some of the investment back with two goals in their 3-2 win over Gent in the Champions League.

Germany international Draxler was under fire from Schalke fans even before the season started for leaving the Ruhr valley club he had played since the age of eight, drawn to cash-rich Wolfsburg in one of the most expensive German transfers.

The 22-year-old was supposed to re-place Kevin De Bruyne, who left to join Manchester City, but instead of delivering assists and goals, Draxler saw criticism mount by the week, his string of lacklustre performances doing little to justify the massive investment.

Until Wednesday he had failed to live up to the hype of his transfer, with last season’s Bundesliga runners-up and German Cup winners struggling in eighth place in the league.

But the attacking midfielder, a World Cup winner in 2014 at the tender age of 20, stepped up to the plate in Belgium, first launching a move he would complete with a low shot for the lead.

He then showed his stunning skills, flicking the ball through the legs of a defender and then chipping it over the keeper for a remarkable 2-0.

“We always said Julian Draxler is the best German football has to offer at the moment,” Wolfsburg sports direc-tor, Klaus Allofs, who lured the player to the Volkswagen-owned club, told reporters.

“But he needs some more time until he can deliver that quality at every game. But he will do it and he will do it with us. I think everyone saw today that he is an outstanding player.” Draxler’s goals and another from Max Kruse helped them to a 3-0 lead before a late comeback from the Belgians with two late goals.

That two-goal spell was the evidence once more this season that Wolfsburg may have massive potential with a talented squad but their concentration lapses re-main a major concern.

“I have very mixed feelings at the mo-ment,” Draxler told reporters. “It was by far my best game for Wolfsburg, with two goals. But we basically lost the plot yet still managed to get a good result away.”

“I am focusing on my performance and sometimes it works better than other times. But I am happy to be in good form at the moment. My first Champions League double, I think I will keep the ball.”

A good run in the Champions League, with the return leg in Germany next month, could also make Draxler’s first season at Wolfsburg equally memorable and profitable. (rtr)

rOMe - Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 12th Champi-ons League goal of the season with a superb strike into the top corner as Real Madrid took a firm grip on their last-16 tie against AS Roma with a 2-0 first leg win on Wednesday.

The record 10 times European champions took the game to Roma, but were frustrated in the first half as the hosts kept men behind the ball, while looking to catch Real out on the break. Ronaldo, however, ended their resistance just before the hour mark.

He audaciously controlled a fine pass from Mar-celo on the left edge of the box, before unleashing a

powerful, curling shot that deflected off Alessandro Florenzi and looped over keeper Wojciech Szczesny

into the net.The emphatic finish sparked a joyous celebration from the

Portuguese who raced across to embrace coach Zinedine Zidane. “It was a great match by him and the rest (of the team),” Zidane

told beIN Sports.“I’m happy (about the celebration) but above all

because he scored,” added the Frenchman, who was a Champions League

winner with Real as a player in 2002 but was

making his com-petition debut as coach.

“It’s been a very special day, we played well but it was a dif-

ficult match because they (Roma) played well.” Substitute Jese added the Spanish team’s second four minutes from fulltime with

a solo run into the box and shot across the face of goal that flew inside the far post.

Two minutes earlier, Real goalkeeper Keylor Navas came out sharply to save at the feet of Stephan El Shaarawy after one of Roma’s fast and dangerous counter-attacks. Ronaldo might have had a second goal a quarter of an hour from the end but his header at the far post was just wide from James Rodriguez’s superb cross.

Karim Benzema then saw his goalbound shot from another James cross hit Lucas Digne in the head.

At the other end, Roma substitute Edin Dzeko hit the side-netting with a header and Real were relieved when the home side were not awarded a penalty after a tackle by Dani Carvajal on Florenzi.

“It was our best performance of the season this evening against a top team,” Florenzi told Mediaset. “We’re bitter because we played really well and to see this score is not pleasing.” (rtr)

seaTTle — Obafemi Mar-tins has posted on social media that he has decided to leave the Seattle Sounders and join a Chi-nese club in Shanghai.

Martins posted a lengthy goodbye to Seattle on his Twit-ter account Wednesday night. Martins said it’s “time for a new challenge” and that he has de-

cided to join Shanghai Shenhua of the Chinese Super League while thanking Seattle for his op-portunity with the Sounders. The Sounders had no comment.

The 31-year-old has been with the Sounders since 2013 and scored 15 goals in 21 regular-season games last year. Sounders general manager Garth Lagerwey said in an audio

statement released by the team Sunday: “Obafemi’s not here with us in this phase of camp. We’ve had an approach from a Chinese club for his services.”

ZuriCH — FIFA ethics prosecutors are seeking life bans for two South American officials who have already pleaded guilty in a U.S. federal investigation of corruption in world soccer.

The FIFA ethics committee said Thursday it completed its own investigations into former CONMEBOL vice presidents Luis Bedoya of Colombia and Sergio Jadue of Chile. Bedoya was a member of the FIFA execu-tive committee until he resigned in November.

FIFA ethics judges will now

examine the six charges made against both men, including bribery and conflicts of interest. No dates have been set for the ethics hearings.

“Until formal decisions are taken by the adjudicatory cham-ber of the ethics committee, Mr. Bedoya and Mr. Jadue are pre-sumed innocent,” ethics prosecu-tors said in a statement. Still, both men have admitted to criminal charges of racketeering and wire-fraud conspiracies.

A U.S. Department of Justice indictment unsealed in December

said Bedoya and Jadue took “annual six-figure bribe payments” linked to tournament broadcasting rights.

The payments were made by a marketing agency in Argentina for the Copa Libertadores, South America’s top club competition, to Bedoya from 2010 and Ja-due since 2012, the indictment stated.

“As part of his plea, Bedoya agreed to forfeit all funds on de-posit in his Swiss bank account, among other funds,” the DoJ said. Jadue forfeited funds in an account held in the U.S. (ap)

Paris — The French foot-ball league has postponed Sat-urday’s match between Bastia and Nantes because of the risks of fan violence.

Originally scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. local time (1900 GMT), the match was first moved to the afternoon at the request of local

government officials, but Bastia officials rejected the decision.

Following violent incidents involving the Corsican club’s fans last weekend, the league said on Wednesday that “given the actual context in Corsica” it decided to move the league match to March, 9.

A crowd of about 100 people in Bastia attacked a police station with projectiles and Molotov cocktails last Sunday in response to arrests following a Reims-Bastia match. Bastia won the game 1-0 but one of the Corsican city’s fans was injured in a scuffle with police. (ap)

JAKARTA - At least 11 top universities and colleges from the Philippines will participate in Indo-nesias largest education exhibition: “World Education Expo Festival (WEEF) 2016” to be held in Balai Kartini on February 20 and 21.

A Filipino delegation to be headed by the Trade and Industry Department, will promote the Philippines as a strategic educa-tion destination offering afford-able education, the Philippines embassy said in a statement on Wednesday.

Among the Filipino universities participating in the WEEF 2016 are the Enderun Colleges, the University of Asia and the Pacific, Far Eastern University, the Lyceum University of the Philippines, the University of Mindanao, the University of Bohol, WCC Aeronautical and Technologi-cal College, Asian Institute of Avia-tion, Airworks Aviation Academy, JNBM Amazing Arts Philippines, and Phinma Education Network, which represents six higher educa-tion institutions, such as Araullo University in Cabanatuan, Cagayan de Oro College in Cagayan de Oro, the University of Pangasinan in Dagupan, the University of Iloilo in Iloilo, Southwestern University in Cebu, and the Career Academy Asia in Metro Manila.

(ant)

When new moon is used then the celebration always hap-pens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on

the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful.

The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are wor-shipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars,

tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Ho-liness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful at-tire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

COVER STORYFrom page 1questionnaires ...

Badung - Tuban customary village distributed 600 question-naires to its residents in order to discover what the opinion of the villagers is regarding the plan to reclaim 700 hectares in

Benoa Bay. Chief of Tuban customary village,

Wayan Mendra, said there were three options offered in the questionnaire: rejecting the investors’ (PT TWBI) plan to reclaim the Benoa Bay area, agreeing with thte investor’s plan to reclaim Benoa Bay, or no opinion.

ìOf the 600 questionnaires distributed only 5 people or 0.83 percent chose the second option -agreeing to the reclamation plan. The remaining or 493 respondents or 82.17 percent stated that they op-posed the relaxation plan. While 34 respondents or

5.67 percent abstained or said they have no opinion on the matter,î he said.

Mendra added that the remaining 68 respondents (11.33 percent) did not return their questionnaires and so, they were eventually counted as having no opinion on the matter.

“The questionnaires that we collected were dis-cussed in a small meeting at the Multipurpose Hall of Tuban customary village onTuesday (Feb. 16). A total of 49 people were present at that time consist-ing of village apparatus, temple priests, the village advisory council, chief of traditional organization and the chief of the customary village youth club,” explained Mendra.

(rtr)

The Head of DKP Badung, Putu Eka Merthawan, said that volume of waste within the past few days reached 125 tons per day, so that his agency decided to declare the waste emergency status for both beach areas.

“We enforce the waste emer-gency status because every day a total of 125 tons of garbage are collected. If tomorrow the waste volume reduces to be less than 100 tons, the status of waste emergency will be revoked,” said Eka Mer-thawan when met last Wednesday (Feb. 17).

When the amount of garbage collected goes don to 100 tons or less, the status of watste emer-gency will be revoked,î said Eka Merthawan.

Merthawan explained that the current amount of waste is the larg-est it has been for the last year but is still less than it was a few years ago then there was as much as 250 tons of garbage been collected everyday. “In my estimation the culmination of marine debris is due to high winds. The garbage swept in from the ocean will continue to increase as long as there are strong winds,” he said.

Hundreds of tons of waste have been placed in four temporary disposal sites (TPS) in Kuta before being taken to the Suwung landfill. ìOne of the temporary disposal sites is a cemetery in Kuta customary village,î he said.

Maerthawan added that it takes 30 trips to transport 125 tons of the Suwung landfill as each truck car-ries about 4 tons. ìSince the waste is wet and mixed with sand, it is heavier than usual,î he explained.
