The third “Captain America” movie met lofty expectations with the fifth-best domestic opening weekend of all time -- trailing only “Star Wars: The Force Awak-ens” at $248 million, “Jurassic World” at $208.8 million, “Marvel’s The Avengers” at $207.4 million and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” at $191.3 million.

The tentpole has already topped the final domestic total of 2011’s “Captain America: The First Aveng-er” at $176.6 million and should eclipse 2014’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” at $259 million by the end of next weekend.

The marketing for “Civil War” clearly resonated with moviegoers, as it promised an epic fight between Chris Evans’ Captain America and Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, plus the introduction of Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.

Paul Dergarabedian, senior me-dia analyst with ComScore, said the performance of “Captain America: Civil War” underlines Marvel and Disney’s adept management of a key franchise.

“’Captain America: Civil War’ certainly delivered the goods as the official kick off movie of the sum-mer of 2016 was in perfect position to capitalize on its sheer quality, massive entertainment value, brand appeal and a high-profile release date,” he noted. “Despite a cadre of sports-related options on the small screen, including the Kentucky Derby and Stanley Cup playoffs, ‘Cap’ came on strong with a top 5 all-time opening weekend debut and expected long-term bankability at the multiplex.”

“Captain America” is also keep-ing the U.S. box office on track for a record performance in 2016 with $3.856 billion through this weekend

-- 7.8% ahead of the same point last year and an impressive 14.7% ahead of 2014. Disney has played a major role in that gain with “The Jungle Book” and “Zootopia” delivering blockbuster numbers plus “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” provid-ing $285 million, or 30% of its $936 million total.

The fourth weekend of “The Jungle Book” finished second to “Captain America” with $21.9 mil-lion at 4,144 sites to lift its 24-day total to $285 million. Open Road’s comedy “Mother’s Day” came in a distant third with $9 million at 3,141, followed by Universal’s third frame of “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” with $3.6 million at 2,901.

With its apt title, “Mother’s Day” saw an impressive 7% rise in business during the Mother’s Day weekend following a so-so opening frame. The ensemble movie, starring Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts and Kate Hudson, has taken in $20.7 million in its first ten days. (rtr)

LOS ANGELES - Marvel-Disney’s “Captain America: Civil War” has opened the summer spectacularly with a dominant $181.8 million weekend at 4,266 U.S. locations.

Apart from difficulties in meeting the demand for a con-tinuous supply, she also faces human resource issues. With only four employees ot is sometimes hard to get all the mushrooms to the supermarket by 5:00AM. She also faced challenges in terms of capital and cash flow. Some-times, payments are not made in accordance with the agreement of the MoU so cash flow is hard to predict.

This year was especially chal-lenging because of the extremely hot weather between December 2016 and March 2016. Normally, she can harvest about 1,0000 mushrooms a day or 15 kg. But

with the lack of rain the same 1,000 mushrooms only yielded 5-10 kg. “With 6,000 mushrooms, I should be able to yield 90 kg a day, but this year it was far less than that. The same kind of thing has been experienced by many farmers” said the young woman from Peguyangan Kaja.

The amount of mushrooms supplied from Java is also mini-mal, making it hard to make up for shortages here. Rusadi has been forced to only meet the demands of some of her clients and not others.

Steven Limantoro, a hydro-ponic vegetable farmer, also said that he is unable to meet the demands of hotels and super-markets because he only has an area of 5x5 meters of land in his courtyard to grow on. “A 1,000

square meter garden can produce enough to meet the demands of 2 or 3 supermarkets. But my 5x5 meters garden can only grow 360 plants, which is not enough to supply supermarkets, we can only supply 1 or 2 restaurants or cafes” he explained.

Meeting the demand for veg-etables, depends on how much is required. Limantoro can produce about 10kg a day which is enough to supply a restaurant or café. Hotels are generally supplied seasonally. During the holiday season, hotels will demand about 3- 5 kg of each vegetable every day, so Limantoro can meet this demand unless he can access more land. “Meeting the demands of supermarkets requires at least 200-300 square meters of land”, he added. Beachwalk Present Be You (tiful) themeThis kind of incident frequently

occurs in the lower area than sea level. Luckily, the seawater flood-ing having occurred since 11:00

did not disrupt the activity of road users in the congested road section.

The Head of the Badung High-

ways and Irrigation Agency, Ida Bagus Surya Suamba, justified the occurrence of seawater flooding on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, Tuban.

Seawater flooding hits Jalan Bypass Ngurah RaiMANGUPURA —Seawater flooding or better known as rob occurred on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, Sunday

(May 8). The flooding caused by the tidal seawater inundated the land as seen at Jimbaran to Nusa Dua.

Such floods frequently inundated half of the main road section lead-ing to the area of Tuban, Jimbaran to Nusa-Dua during high tides.

“Indeed this frequently occurs, so that this seawater flooding is not for the first time. However, to resolve this we must make coordi-nation with the Center for National Road Development of Region VIII Denpasar,” he said.

According to him, the area inundated by seawater flooding belongs to national road section, while the authority for the nation-al road lies in the agency. “The tidal flooding on the bypass road happens due to sedimentation of Benoa Bay, so that solution to this problem is dredging the sedimen-tation,” he affirmed.

He said the effort to overcome the sedimentation at Benoa Bay will be coordinated by the Center for National Road Development of Region VIII Denpasar to cen-tral government. “To resolve this problem, the agency will coordi-nate with central government,” he said.

Planning Section Head of the Center for National Road Development of Region VIII Denpasar, Hendro Satrio, when contacted separately said that associated with the tidal flood on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, Tuban, his agency was still checking. “Thanks for the information and our team will check it,” he said briefly.

Previously, the Regent of Ba-dung, I Nyoman Giri Prasta has

committed to normalizing or re-storing the area without changing the existing order. The efforts to normalize Benoa Bay aim to over-come the floods occurred in the region, especially in Kuta, Legian and Seminyak. When it rains, the water in the mainland will flow to Mati River and empties into the Benoa Bay. However, due to the current Benoa Bay sedimentation, the flow of rainwater having been designed from mainland to Mati River and empties to Benoa Bay will get inhibited. This happens because sedimentation occurred at Benoa Bay is higher than Mati River. Thus, it impedes the flow of water.

my opinion, it (sedimentation—Ed) must be dredged by the gov-ernment of Badung, not by other parties. If the normalization is done from the Mati River the water will flow to the Benoa Bay. So, our concept is to normalize,” he said.

He said the normalization must be taken to restore the area as ever before. Normalization is very much different from reclamation. Normalization restores the area to the original condition, while rec-lamation is the process of back-filling to make new territory.

“Similar normalization needs to be done to bare mangrove forests. Mangroves should be reforested in the areas having been defoliate. Pudut Island area will also be normalized, but we emphasize here not to change the original order,” he concluded. (kmb27)

CAPE CANAVERAL — Mer-cury has begun a relatively rare move across the sun.

The solar-planetary ballet got underway just after 7 a.m. on the east coast with the smallest planet appearing as a tiny black dot on the face of the sun. The transit will last for a total of about 7½ hours. The last time it happened was 2006. It will happen again three years from now, but then not until 2032. NASA says the

event occurs only about 13 times a century.

The entirety of Mercury’s journey will be viewable to the eastern U.S. and Canada, as well as most of western Europe and South America.

To catch a glimpse, viewers need binoculars or telescopes with protective solar filters. Mer-cury’s journey can also be seen via a livestream on NASA’s website. (ap)

Scientists on Friday announced the discovery in southern China of new fossils of a reptile from 242 million years ago called Atopoden-tatus that clarify the nature of this strange crocodile-sized, plant-eating sea-dweller.

When the first fossils of Atopoden-tatus were found in 2014, scientists thought, based on its poorly preserved skull, it had a down-turned snout resembling a flamingo’s beak with a

vertical, zipper-like mouth. But two new fossil specimens, described in research published in the journal Sci-ence Advances, resolved the matter.

“On a scale of weirdness, I think this is up there with the best. It kind of reminds me of some of the Dr. Seuss creations,” National Museums Scotland paleontologist Nicholas Fraser said.

Atopodentatus is the earliest-known herbivorous marine reptile,

said paleontologist Olivier Rieppel of the Field Museum in Chicago.

Atopodentatus apparently used chisel-like teeth along the edge of its blunt, hammer-shaped snout to scrape algae off hard underwater surfaces. It then quickly opened its mouth to create suction before closing its jaws to filter the plant material through densely packed and needle-shaped teeth much like baleen whales strain tiny shrimp-like krill from seawater.

Atopodentatus, about 9 feet (2.75 meters) long, lived in a shallow sea in China’s Yunnan province alongside fish and other marine reptiles, said paleontologist Chun Li of the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoan-thropology.

When thinking of hammerhead creatures, sharks may come to mind. But Atopodentatus’ hammerhead feature differed in location and func-tion from the sharks, whose eyes are on the end of lateral extensions on their head.

Atopodentatus appeared during the Triassic Period relatively soon

after the biggest mass extinction of species in Earth’s history, illustrating that life was bouncing back nicely. Other oddball creatures also swam the seas at the time, including a rep-tile called Dinocephalosaurus whose neck comprised half of its 17-foot (5.25 meters) length.

“If you saw this reptile (Atopo-dentatus) in isolation cruising around with some of the fishes of the day, I think you would say it was really quite absurd,” Fraser said. “But alongside some of its fellow denizens of the deep, I think it would just appear as one more oddity in a mesmerizing world.” (rtr)

BANGLI - The government plans to transform the Captain Mudita Square into a town park. Like the town park belonging to other districts, the town park to be built by the government of Bangli will also include some public fa-cilities and fountains.

Regent of Bangli, I Made Gi-anyar, when met recently said that the Captain Mudita Square so far having been used by most people to exercise will be transformed into a town park. According to the plan, the town park will be established in 2017. “Its detailed engineering design has been already prepared this year,” he explained.

As planned, the town park of Bangli will be equipped with a number of public facilities. One of them is a playground for chil-

dren. In addition, it will also be equipped with ornamental foun-tains as already owned by several other neighboring districts. The regent also said that in the town park will also be built a stage with the background of Captain A.A. Mudita statue. So, it is no longer necessary to prepare a stage whenever organizing any event.

With the transformation of Captain Mudita Square into a town park, automatically it can no longer be used by the community for sport activities. Instead, the government of Bangli will take advantage of the Kubu Square for community as sporting facilities. “Later on, we’ll re-arrange the Kubu Square and make a track as well as other sporting facilities,” he said. (kmb40)

Regent of Bangli, I Made Gian-yar, when opening the event said that all this time the Kintamani dog had been passing through a long journey before it was established into a clump of native dog breed to Indonesia by the Ministry of Agriculture in 2014. After that, the government of Bangli strengthened the recognition by issuing the Re-gional Bylaw No.4/2015 about the amendment to regional bylaw No. 02/2010 on the conservation area for Kintamani dog. In the regional bylaw No.04/2015, the govern-ment of Bangli gives recognition to Kintamani dogs with the colors like white, black, brown and brindled.

“In the regional bylaw is also mentioned about the development area for dog conservation namely the Sukawana, Siakin and Pinggan village,” he explained.

According to Gianyar, the chal-lenge faced by the development of Kintamani dog all this time is not only related to the restricted num-ber of kennel, but also the threat of infectious animal diseases, especially rabies.

“The outbreak of rabies cases and mitigation effort need to get support from the community. Through this Kintamani dog con-

test, we want to invite and educate people so as to pay more attention to the welfare of their pet. At the same time, it will provide the op-portunities for Kintamani dog to become a host in its own region as long as complying with the correct caring procedures,” he explained.

In the meantime, the dog contest committee, Sri Rahayu said that the dog contest is held in cooperation with the Bangli Livestock and Agriculture Agency, Department of Veterinary Medicine, Udayana University and the All-Indonesia Kennel Club (Perkin) of Bali re-gion. The Kintamani dog contest this time is followed by a number of participants consisting of dog breeders at Sukawana and general public.

The dog contest is divided into two sessions, namely the first session consisting of local dog breeders of Sukawana vil-lage dogs and the session for general public. There are three categories contested by age, namely 3-6 months, 6-9 months age and the adult category. Other than in terms of anatomy and health, the agility of the dogs also becomes the criterion of the dog contest. (kmb40)

The rolling vote count by an election commission-accredited watchdog showed, about two hours after polling stations had closed, that Duterte had about 5 million votes and his two nearest rivals were trailing with just under 3 mil-lion votes each.

The numbers reported by the Parish Patoral Council for Respon-sible Voting accounted for about 29 percent of the 54 million registered Filipino voters.

Duterte’s man-of-the-people demeanour tapped into popular dis-gust with the political establishment over its failure to tackle poverty and inequality despite several uninter-rupted years of robust economic growth.

His incendiary rhetoric and ad-vocacy of extrajudicial killings to

stamp out crime and illegal drugs have, however, alarmed many who hear echoes of the Southeast Asian country’s authoritarian past.

The presidential race has been one of the most divisive in years, with outgoing leader Benigno Aquino and rival candidates warn-ing of a disaster if Duterte makes good on his promises.

Duterte’s defiance of political tradition has drawn comparisons with U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump.

“If we have to go extreme, why not?” said Manila voter Jordan Manalo, 24, as he lined up to cast his vote for Duterte.

“I want someone new, someone who would go beyond the usual.”

Asked by a television inter-viewer what he thought about his

apparent victory, Duterte gave a puzzling answer.

“Sometimes I’m victorious and the winner, sometimes there’s always losing and being sad, some-times being sick and healthy ... that is how the universe is being played every day,” he told CNN Philippines.

At least 11 people were killed in violence before voting started, but otherwise the election was mostly smooth with voting machine prob-lems at only a few dozen polling stations.

Voters also cast ballots for the vice-president, 300 lawmakers and about 18,000 local government officials.

Jostling for office with politicians were business chiefs, celebrities and boxing star Manny Pacquiao, who is running for the Senate.

Minister Konrad Mizzi (C), one of two high-ranking members of the Maltese government named in the Panama Papers leak scandal, poses for photographs with Labour Party support-ers during a May Day rally organised by the party in Valletta, Malta, May 1, 2016.

WELLINGTON - Wealthy Latin Americans are using secre-tive, tax-free New Zealand shelf companies and trusts to help chan-nel funds around the world, accord-ing to a report on Monday based on leaks of the so-called Panama Papers.

Pressure is mounting on Prime Minister John Key to take action after local media analysed more than 61,000 documents relating to New Zealand that are part of the massive leak of data from Mossack Fonseca, a Panama-based law firm. The papers have shone spotlight on how the world’s rich take advantage of offshore tax regimes.

Mossack Fonseca actively pro-moted New Zealand as a good place to do business due to its tax-free status, high levels of confidentiality and legal security, according to a joint report by Radio New Zealand, TVNZ and investigative journalist Nicky Hager.

Key said it was “utterly incor-rect” that New Zealand was a tax haven, adding he was open to changing rules around foreign trusts if advised by a review or the OECD.

“If there’s any need for change in this area, the government will consider it and if necessary, take action,” Key told reporters.

The government was asking the Ministry of Justice to move quickly on rules already under consider-ation to tighten anti-money launder-ing requirements for lawyers, real estates and accountants, he added.

Opposition Labour Party Leader Andrew Little said the government must act to “preserve New Zea-land’s reputation by shutting down the system that sees our country implicated in a massive global network of tax avoidance.”

The New Zealand government said last month it would begin a review of its foreign trust laws after the Panama Papers high-lighted vulnerabilities in its legal framework that made it a possible link in international tax avoidance structures because its foreign trusts are not subject to tax.

Green Party Co-leader James Shaw said that review doesn’t go far enough. He called on Key to “stop defending the tax avoidance industry” and demanded a full inquiry. (rtr)

From the information got on Sunday (May 8), the queue of pri-vate cars has been snaking to the exit of the harbor since Saturday afternoon.

Chief of Jembrana Police, Djoni Widodo, together with the Deputy Chief A.A. Rai Laba came down to set the queue at Gilimanuk.

At least 150 police personnel were deployed along the road heading for the harbor. Chief of Jembrana Police Traffic Affairs, Gede Sumadra Kerthiawan, said

that the queue has been predicted to occur at the weekend. “We apply traffic engineering to avoid long queue and diverted private cars to alleys directly leading to maneuver parking,” he said.

Private cars were diverted to pass through two alleys at the neighbor-hoods. The queue could reach about three kilometers from the entrance to the Gilimanuk harbor. After that, police led truck, freight vehicles and buses to the main line to Gilimanuk Harbor so as not to interfere with

private vehicles. Freight vehicles were directed straight to freight dock (LCM).

Due to many incoming ve-hicles and data entry of the manifest, it took quite long time. Kerthiawan said that the data entry of the manifest became one of the factors causing the long queue other that the si-multaneous incoming vehicles. “In addition, check-up of ship before departure is made too tightly because it is a little time-consuming,” he added.

Until Sunday afternoon, the queue was still taking place to the outside of the harbor parking lot. Allegedly thousands of cars were leaving out of Bali on the weekend. (kmb26)

TABANAN - Pura Luhur Besi Kalung, located in Utu Custom-ary Village, Penebel Tabanan has the distinct feature of being home to a Linga Yoni with a chainlike necklace that gongs when struck. It is therefore assumed that the chain necklace is made of steel from which the name “Besi” (steel) comes from. It is believed that if the Linga Yoni slants to one side it foretells a national disaster.

Head of Pura Luhur Besi Kalung, accompanied by public relations of-ficer Made Subagia said on Monday that the Linga Yoni in fact slanted in 2013 just before earthquakes and volcanic eruptions shook the island of Java. The Lina Yoni had been slanting for a month before the natural disasters and came back to its straightened position on its own. “It slanted in 1932, 1945, 1965 and again in 1998 just before the national reformation”, he said.

The Linga Yoni stands in the in-nermost sanctum of the temple at the main shrine (Linggih Ageng) .There is a stepped stone structure leading up to the Lingga Yoni and at its base there is special ‘taber-nacle’ where officiating priests sit. This area cannot be approached by just anyone and even those who do so, do not dare touch the Lingga Yoni.

The only person who steps on the stone step structure is Tabanan Palace’s Ida Tjokorda Tabanan, the head priest of Pura Luhur Besi Kalung and the head priest of Pura Luhur Batukaru Temple with per-mission from Ageng Luhur Besi Kalung, Someone once accidently sat on the ‘tabernacle’ and as Sub-agia describes, the person was im-mediately possessed and died two weeks later.

It is also forbidden to prune the tree that grows next to the Lingga Yonia as it is believed that it is Ida Batara’s hair. Pruning only takes place after a special ceremony held on the Sunday after Saraswati day and the cuttings are buried in Bambang Temple.

Also the trees that grow near the temple must not be cut down so as to give the impression of the temple being surrounded by forest. Even rotting trees are not uprooted. “They are left to rot and are then replanted”, said Subagia.

Pura Luhur Besi Kalung, an-niversary (piodalan) is celebrated every Pagerwesi day. Pura Luhur Besi Kalung holds the status of “Sad Kahyangan” and is part of the ranks of Kemiri Pura Luhur Batukaru temple. It is also known as a place to request safety and prosperity. (kmb24)

Hans Dietmar Schweisgut called on Beijing to urgently address over-capacity and the “market distor-

tions” it is causing globally.“According to many estimates,

the overcapacity in the steel sector

in China alone is more than double the total productive capacity in the second largest steel producer,

which is the European Union,” said Schweisgut.

“We very much need to urgently address the short-term market dis-tortion issues which we currently see.”

Beijing is trying to shrink bloat-

ed companies in industries includ-ing steel and coal in which supply exceeds demand, leading to price-cutting wars and heavy losses.

The EU and the United States complain that China is trying to clear away the backlog of steel by exporting at unfairly low prices. Earlier this year, thousands of European steelworkers protested in Brussels against the import of cheap Chinese steel. Tata Steel cited low-cost Chinese competi-tion when it announced plans in April to sell money-losing opera-tions in Britain that employ 20,000 people.

Schweisgut also said that while European companies were will-ing in decades past to put up with restrictions on doing business in China, especially when they had other advantages like cheap labor, now the EU wants a relationship that is much more based on “fair exchange.”

He said European businesses are growing more urgent with “questions like ‘why is it possible that last year a Chinese institution bought a European bank but it’s not possible for a European bank to buy a Chinese one.’”

Chinese regulations forbid or limit foreign investment in certain sectors, including banking and au-tomobiles. (ap)

LONDON — Hundreds of economists are urging world leaders to end the era of tax havens, arguing they only benefit rich individuals and multinational corporations and serve to increase inequality.

The 300 economists, in a let-ter coordinated by activist group Oxfam, say poorer countries are hit hardest by tax dodging. The signatories , including Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia University’s Earth In-stitute, argue there is no economic justification for tax havens and urge leaders to “lift the veil of secrecy” surrounding them.

The letter released Monday comes days before an anti-corrup-tion summit in London, featuring politicians from 40 countries as well as representatives from the World Bank and IMF.

Many of the companies that

featured in the leak of the so-called Panama Papers were incorporated in British Overseas Territories and the British Virgin Islands. (ap)

Hans Dietmar Schweisgut, EU ambassador to China, toasts after delivering the opening speech at an event to mark Europe Day in Beijing, China, Monday, May 9, 2016.

BEIJING — The European Union’s ambassador to China said Monday the bloc wants a more level playing field in its trade relations with China, insisting that Beijing was not doing enough to address overcapacity in its steel industry that has hit European manufacturers hard.

To that end, explained Rai Man-tra, he will conduct an assessment to the families of Satria Palace through the leading sector of the Denpasar Tourism Office. The Mayun Antique Gallery showcas-

ing the uniqueness and beauty of ceramics and typical atmosphere of the Satria Palace with Balinese ornaments and the royal family life still getting involved in the arts of painting and sculpture becomes

They got no answer, according to witnesses interviewed in a recently declassified, heavily redacted Penta-gon report that lays bare the confu-sion over rules of engagement gov-erning the mission in Afghanistan.

As the Taliban insurgency gathers strength, avoiding enemy fire has become increasingly difficult for advisers, who have been acting as consultants rather than combatants since NATO forces formally ceased fighting at the end of 2014.

In the heat of the battle, lines can be blurred, and the problem is not exclusive to Afghanistan: questions have arisen over the role of U.S. troops in Iraq after a U.S. Navy SEAL was killed by Islamic State this month.

“’How far do you want to go?’ is not a proper response to ‘How far

do you want us to go?’” one special forces member told investigators in a report into the U.S. air strikes on a hospital in Kunduz that killed 42 medical staff, patients and caretak-ers.

That incident was the biggest sin-gle tragedy of the brief capitulation of Kunduz to Taliban militants, and there is no suggestion that the mis-take was the result of a lack of clarity over the rules of engagement.

But the 700-page report, much of it blacked out for security reasons, sheds light on how the rules are not fully understood, even by some troops on the ground, compromising the mission to stabilise the nation and defeat a worsening Islamist insurgency.

The issues exposed in the report are likely to be considered by the

new U.S. commander in Afghani-stan, General John Nicholson, as he prepares to makes recommendations in the coming weeks that may clarify or expand the level of combat sup-port the U.S.-led training mission can provide.

“It’s not a strategy and, in fact, it’s a recipe for disaster in that kind of kinetic environment,” said the soldier, who, like others in the report, was not identified.

He added that his unit, whose role was to advise and assist Afghan forces without engaging in combat, asked three times for commanders to clarify the rules governing their mission.

“Sadly, the only sounds audible were the sounds of crickets ... though those were hard to hear over the gunfire.” (rtr)

Pentagon report reveals confusion among US troops over Afghan mission

KABUL - Amid fierce fighting after the Taliban captured the northern Afghan city of Kunduz last year, U.S. special forces advisers repeatedly asked their commanders how far they were al-lowed to go to help local troops retake the city.

JAKARTA - Radical move-ments arise from Islamic states, which have failed to develop, and their internal conflicts have spread to other countries, ac-cording to Vice President Jusuf Kalla.

“If we look back at history, radicalism has always arisen from failed Islamic countries. Al-Qaeda originated in Afghanistan, which failed to develop, and ISIS is from Iraq and Syria that we know have issues there,” Kalla noted in a speech at the opening of the High-Level International Conference on Moderate Islam here on Monday.

The vice president explained that the failure of some Islamic countries had fueled the radical movement, which was caused by two main factors: the arbitrari-ness of the leaders and public ire towards the government.

“We know what happened in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and Libya where the leaders did not respect (the aspirations of) their own people, and so, the large countries attacked them on grounds of establishing democ-racy,” Kalla explained.

The devastation in the failed countries had triggered concern among the public regarding the future of their nation and initi-

BANDUNG - Social Affairs Minis-ter Khofifah Indar Parawansa confirmed that 19-year-old F, who was raped by 19 men, was a victim of human traf-ficking committed by her own friends. “The case in Manado is that of human trafficking. She had been recruited and trafficked by her friends, and later, she was sexually assaulted,” the minister stated here, Sunday.

Parawansa had visited Gorontalo to gain firsthand information on the rape and human trafficking cases.

The minister revealed that the rape had occurred long ago, and the media had repeatedly reported the incident, but

the response from law enforcers and the community had been poor.

F was drugged and raped by 15 men in North Sulawesi and later again by four men in Gorontalo in January. Two of the four men were allegedly police officers. The minister remarked that the legal process was now underway, emphasizing that those involved in sexual crimes should be punished in accordance with the existing laws.

When F returned home in North Sulawesi after being raped, she hardly recognized her own mother and sib-lings, according to Rani, the girls mother.(ant)

BOGOR - Community in West Java Provincial city of Bogor has successfully raised fund amounting Rp485 million during the Palestinian Care Humanitarian concert, which will be contributed to Palestin-ian refugees in Turkey, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan.

Chairman of the National Committee for Palestinian Peo-ple (KNRP) Erry Nugroho Hi-mawan who organized the fund raising said that the event was held in the campus of Bogor-

based Agriculture Institute of Technology (ITB) on Sunday.

“The financial aid will be immediately remitted to buy daily needs such as drinking water, medicines, cloths, meals, including school utensils,” for the Palestinian refugees, he pointed out.

According to him, some of the donators also handed over their land measuring 400 meters in Bogor District and another 150 meters in Garut District as con-tribution to the refugees.(ant)

Radicalism arising from failed Islamic states: VP Kalla

Jusuf Kallaated the emergence of radicalism, which later evolved into terrorism.

Therefore, to overcome the prob-lem of radicalism and terrorism, it was necessary to boost unity among Islamic countries, the vice president remarked.

The presence of up to 1.6 billion Muslims spread across 57 countries in the world should act as a driv-ing force to spread the goodness of Islam.

Islamic countries should use their

natural resources moderately, espe-cially in the oil and gas sector. The vice president called for the efficient use of these resources, in a way that does not create divisions among Muslim nations.

“Of course, we all want a moder-ate Islamic state, which lends pur-pose to us all as Islam is a religion that offers grace, promotes goodness, and unites the entire community. That is the purpose and ideals we all (follow),” he added.(ant)

BEIJING — North Korea on Monday expelled three BBC journalists it had detained days earlier for allegedly “insulting the dignity” of the authoritarian country, sending them off on a flight to Beijing.

Correspondent Rupert Wingfield-Hayes and his team had been scheduled to leave Friday after accompanying a group of Nobel laure-ates on a North Korea trip. Instead, the journalists were stopped at the Pyongyang airport, detained and questioned.

O Ryong Il, secretary-general of the North’s National Peace Com-mittee, said Wingfield-Hayes’ news coverage distorted facts and “spoke ill of the system and the leadership of the country.” He said Wingfield-Hayes wrote an apology, was being expelled Monday and would never be admitted into the country again.

The BBC said Wingfield-Hayes’ producer Maria Byrne and camera-man Matthew Goddard were also detained and expelled.

The three arrived in Beijing on a flight Monday evening. Wingfield-Hayes said only that he was glad to be out and would have a statement later. His colleagues did not speak.

“We are very disappointed that our reporter Rupert Wingfield-Hayes and his team have been deported from North Korea after the government took offense at material he had filed,” the BBC said in a statement. “Four BBC staff, who were invited to cover the Workers’ Party Congress, remain in North Korea and we expect them to be allowed to continue their reporting.”

North Korea did not reveal which of the team’s reports it was upset with, but in one of the segments, North Korean officials are seen arguing with Wingfield-Hayes over video shot in front of a statue of national founder Kim Il Sung.

“They clearly felt that we said stuff that was not respectful to the great leader,” Wingfield-Hayes said in the segment. He said they were ordered to delete the footage or they would not be allowed to leave the university campus where they were filming.

Another segment included a tour of a modern-looking hospital that Wingfield-Hayes expressed doubts about. “The children we’re shown look remarkably well, and there isn’t a doctor in sight. ... Everything we see looks like a setup,” he said.

More than 100 foreign journalists are in the capital for North Ko-rea’s first party congress in 36 years, though they have largely been prevented from actually covering the proceedings and the more than 3,400 delegates. Officials have kept the foreign media busy with trips around Pyongyang to show them the places it most wants them to see — a maternity hospital with seemingly state-of-the-art equipment, a wire-making factory where managers say salaries and production are both going up, and the humble birthplace of national founder Kim Il Sung, which has been converted into a sort of museum-park with a large “funfair” right next door.

About 30 of the journalists finally got a peek at the congress on Monday, for about 10 minutes.(ap)

The Serb collected his fifth title of 2016 after winning the Qatar Open, Indian Wells, Miami Open and Australian Open, in which he also defeated Murray in the final.

The Scot, who also lost second place in the world rankings to Roger

Federer, knocked out crowd favou-rite Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals but Djokovic proved a more formi-dable opponent, breaking him three times in the opening set.

Murray hit back in the second but had no answer in the third as

Djokovic repeated his 2011 Madrid Open triumph.

“I started very well and played terrific tennis in the first set,” said Djokovic.

“There were a couple of close games in the second set ... and I made some unforced errors and double faults in the game when I dropped my serve. So I fought...very hard.”

Djokovic also collected his 64th career title, equalling tennis greats Pete Sampras and Bjorn Borg.

“It’s obviously very flattering to be alongside such legends of the sport, players that I looked up to, especially Pete Sampras,” he said.

“When I was growing up he was ruling the tennis world. To win as many titles as he did in his career, it’s quite amazing.”

Murray said his opponent played the better tennis.

“Novak has had a lot of wins against me in the last couple of years unfortunately but he has done some great things and also deserved this win,” the Scot added.

“At the end he came up with some big serves and got himself some free points and did well. That’s why he’s number one just now.” (rtr)

LAS VEGAS - Floyd May-weather continues to stoke the fires of a possible return to the ring after the retired multi-division champion dropped hints of a potential bout against outspoken Irish mixed-mar-tial arts fighter Conor McGregor.

With a recent report claiming the two headliners were discuss-ing a fight, Mayweather advanced the speculation on the sidelines of the Canelo Alvarez and Amir Khan clash in Las Vegas at the weekend.

“It’s possible. It’s possible. There was a name that was shot at me,” Mayweather told FightHype.com. “But the rumours that y’all have been hearing (are) the rumours I started. It may not be a rumour. Keep your fingers crossed.”

The 39-year-old American retired last September after accumulating a 49-0 record during a 19-year career that produced world titles in five

weight divisions and earnings in excess of $800 million.

He has hardly faded from the scene, however, and Mayweather appeared at ringside following boxer Adrien Broner’s victory over Ashley Theophane last month.

Broner then verbally challenged Mayweather, who laughed off that taunt but he did recently allude to a comeback in an interview with Showtime, bringing along with it whispers of a possible rematch against Manny Pacquiao.

Dubbed ‘The Fight of the Cen-tury’ by promoters, their long-awaited showdown on May 2 last year was a disappointing affair, as Mayweather easily outpointed his Filipino opponent in a low-key and ultra-defensive encounter.

However, one more win would put Mayweather ahead of heavy-weight great Rocky Marciano, who also retired with a perfect 49-0

career record.“It’s not important,” Mayweather

told FightHype.com of the record. “I didn’t let a sport retire me. I was able to retire from a sport and quit on my own terms.”

UFC featherweight champion McGregor was dropped from his rematch against welterweight Nate Diaz at UFC 200 in July for refus-ing to attend a news conference to promote the event.

McGregor, who was choked into submission in a non-title bout against Diaz in March, subse-quently hinted that he could retire before making an aborted attempt to get back on the card.

In response to speculation about a possible meeting with Mayweather, the Irishman tweet-ed a mock promotional poster of the two fighters face-to-face with the caption “MMA Vs Box-ing.” (rtr)

Luis Suarez scored twice, with Lionel Messi, Neymar and Rafinha adding one goal each at the Camp Nou to keep Bar-celona one point in front of Real Madrid, which defeated Valencia 3-2 with two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and one by Karim Benzema.

Atletico Madrid, which was trailing Barcelona for most of the season and was tied in points before this weekend, dropped out of contention after a sur-prising 2-1 late loss to already relegated Levante. Atletico had been bidding for its second league title in three seasons.

In the final round, Barcelona will play at Granada, which was fighting against relegation but on Sunday mathematically secured its place in the top flight with a 4-1 win at Sevilla. Real Madrid will play at Deportivo La Coruna, which is in the middle of the table and also won’t have anything to play for in the last round.

“We had good rhythm from the start, creating pressure following turnovers,” Barcelona coach Luis Enrique said. “We played a complete game, I’m happy with what we’ve achieved. Now we just have to put it away by beating Granada.”

Barcelona enters the final weekend with 88 points from 37 matches. It has the advantage on the head-to-head tiebreaker against Real Madrid, so the rival will need to win its game in La Coruna and hope Barcelona at least draws in Granada.

“I’m always positive,” Real Madrid

coach Zinedine Zidane said. “We have one game left to play, anything can hap-pen. We have to give everything and ... we will see what happens right up until the end, until the very last minute.”

Barcelona will be trying to win its sixth league title in eight seasons, while Madrid will be looking to lift the trophy for the first time since 2012, and second time in eight seasons.

Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid were coming off difficult games in the semifi-nals of the Champions League, when both advanced to the May 28 final in Milan. Barcelona will play in the Copa del Rey final against Sevilla on May 22.

The Catalan club recently relinquished a nine-point lead after going winless in four straight games, but Luis Enrique’s team picked up the pace just in time, winning four consecutive games by outscoring opponents 21-0 to stay ahead going into the decisive round.

Barcelona dominated from the start at the Camp Nou and Messi opened the scoring from a free kick in the eighth minute, curling a left-foot shot over the wall.

Messi then set up Suarez’s first goal with a pass into the area in the 52nd, and the striker increased the lead with a header in the 61st. Substitute Rafinha got on the board after a blunder by goal-keeper Pau Lopez in the 74th and Neymar completed the scoring from close range

in the 83rd.Suarez reached 37 league goals,

four more than Ronaldo, who put Real Madrid ahead in the 26th at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium and added his second in the 59th after Benzema had netted in the 42nd.

Valencia’s goals came from striker Rodrigo in the 55th and midfielder Andre Gomes in the 81st. It played a man down from the 84th because of a red card for Rodrigo.

Madrid got the win, its 11th straight in the league, despite miss- ing some key

p lay -ers because of

injuries, including Ga-reth Bale, Luka Modric and starting goalkeeper Keylor Navas. It was the final career home game for Alvaro Arbeloa, the 33-year-old defender who announced earlier in the week that he was retiring.

Atletico Madrid had its six-game winning streak in the league halted by a disappointing 2-1 loss at Levante, which had been relegated in the last round.

Fernando Torres put Diego Simeone’s team ahead just two minutes into the game in Valencia, but Victor Casadesus equalized in the 30th and substitute Ital-ian striker Giuseppe Rossi netted the

surprise winner in the 90th to end Atletico’s hopes of another title.

“Levante played a great match and was better than us,” Sime-one said. “I can

j u s t congratulate

them. We had some chances to score, but they defended well.” Atletico is three points behind Barcelona but can’t overcome the Catalan club because it loses on the head-to-head tiebreaker.(ap)

Barcelona and Madrid to fight for Spain title in final round

MADRID — The Spanish league title race will go down to the final round, with rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid still in contention. Barcelona routed city rival Espanyol 5-0 on Sunday to increase its lead going into next weekend, when another victory will secure the Catalan club its second consecutive title.

GENEVA — Michel Platini will resign as UEFA president after failing to overturn his ban at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which cut his sanction from six to four years. Platini called the verdict a “deep injustice” and said he will now step down from the UEFA position he has held since 2007.

CAS effectively removed Platini from world soccer by ensuring his ban “corresponds to the duration of a presidential term,” the court said in a statement.

Platini’s current UEFA mandate expires in March 2019, and the next FIFA presidential election is due in May 2019.

“This decision is inflicting me a suspension whose length will de facto prevent me — as if by chance — from bidding for the next FIFA presidential election,” Platini said in a statement.

Leaving UEFA also frees him to pursue an appeal to Swiss courts and “establish my integrity in this

case,” Platini said. Switzerland’s supreme court can overturn verdicts if legal process is abused

but will not re-judge the evidence. The court ruled that Platini was guilty of conflict of interest for taking a $2 million

payment from FIFA approved by Sepp Blatter in 2011. The money

was uncontracted extra salary for working as

Blatter’s presidential adviser from 1999-2002, and was large- ly unknown until it was revealed by Swiss federal prosecu-tors last September.

The CAS panel “was not convinced by the legitimacy of the 2,000,000 Swiss francs pay-ment, which was only recognized by Mr. Platini and Mr. Blatter,” the CAS statement said.

Platini got the money “more than eight years after the end of his work relations, was not based on any document established at the time of the contractual relations and did not correlate with the alleged unpaid part of his salary,” the court

said.In deciding the ban, the judges said Platini’s

attitude in court was a factor in the verdict. The ruling cited “the absence of any repentance

and the impact that this matter has had on FIFA’s reputation.”

FIFA was also cri t ic ized by the court for knowing about the irregular payment for f o u r y e a r s

before the indepen- dent ethics committee opened an investiga-tion. For that reason, CAS dismissed a FIFA ethics charge against P l a t i n i of disloyalty to FIFA. The case ended Platini’s hopes of replacing Blat ter a t FIFA.

The UEFA executive committee will meet next week in Basel, Switzerland, on the sidelines of the Europa League final to discuss replacing Platini. An election is likely in mid-September at meetings of European soccer leaders in Athens, Greece. Blatter is awaiting a CAS hearing to challenge his six-year ban.

John Terry’s illustrious Chelsea career appears set to end on the sidelines after the captain was red carded in Saturday’s loss to Sun-derland and midfielder Nemanja Matic was one of the first of his team mates to pay tribute to the departing legend.

The 35-year-old Terry, whose current deal expires at the end of the season and has yet to be offered a new contract, will miss Chelsea’s final two games of the campaign through suspension resulting from that dismissal.

Terry, who made his senior debut in 1998, is Chelsea’s most success-ful captain, having led them to four

league titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups and one Champions League crown since 2004.

“We know what he has done for this club and what he has won. All of us in the team wish him all the best for the future and of course this is not a good way to finish in a club,” Matic told British media. “But we don’t forget what he won and what he has already done.”

Chelsea, who are ninth in the table, will bring an end to their woe-ful title defence after they first travel to face eighth-placed Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday before hosting champions Leicester City on Sunday.(rtr)

BUCHAREST — Romania’s interior ministry has suspended the license of a private ambulance company that transported Dinamo Bucharest and Cameroon midfielder Patrick Ekeng to hospital after he collapsed on the pitch during a match on Friday. He died later in hospital.

The ministry said in a statement late Sunday it found defibrillators with expired batteries in some ambulances belonging to Puls, and medicine used in resuscitation procedures that had expired.. Ekeng, 26, collapsed on the pitch seven minutes after going on as a substitute against Viitorul Constanta. He was taken a short distance to the hospital where doctors tried for more than an hour to resuscitate him. The ministry suspended Puls’ license for one month to remedy the situation and fined it 23,800 lei ($6,050).(ap)

by the FIFA ethics committee last October, then banned for eight years. FIFA’s appeal panel cut two years off their sanctions in February as reward for their long service to the sport.

The verdict came on Monday, one month before a project close to Platini’s heart — the European Championship in his native France — kicks off. He captained France to the title when it last hosted the tournament in 1984.

Platini said as he left his hearing at CAS 10 days ago that he will attend matches as a guest at Euro 2016, played in nine cities from June 10-July 10. However, his ban bars him from formal business contact with soccer officials.

Platini put his faith in the independence of CAS throughout his case, and criticized the FIFA ethics court as biased. He often said there were forces inside soccer’s world body trying to block his presidential bid, though he did not identify who.

The CAS panel judged the evidence afresh and had the power to impose a life ban on Platini if it believed bribery and corruption were factors.

Platini received his money from FIFA in February 2011, when Blatter was preparing for what became a bitterly fought re-election contest against Mohamed bin Hammam of Qatar. The Platini-led UEFA pledged support to Blatter before Bin Hammam’s candidacy was ended by allegations he bribed Caribbean vot-ers.(ap)

(kmb24)

(kmb40)

(kmb27)

DENPASAR —Farmers a l -

ways have trou-ble meeting the demand for a continuous sup-

ply of a given agricultural prod-

uct. In fact, many famers have lost clients or had their contracts with supermarkets, hotels or restaurants terminated on these grounds.

Mushroom farmer Ni Wayan Purnami Rusadi, for example had her contract with a supermarket terminated because she was un-

able to continuously supply them with 10-12 kg of mushrooms a day. “We were required to meet the amount specifically requested, in the MoU”, she explained while taking part in a food exhibi-tion being held as part of the PHDI-P anniversary celebrations

in Renon, Denpasar on Sunday (May 8).When she could not meet the supermarkets demand for mushrooms, she tried buying mushrooms form other farmers, but the quality their produce was not the same as hers. “Since the supermarket functions using a

return system, wherein if the goods perish or are not sold, they are retuned to the farmers – so we loose out”, said Rusadi who owns her own business called Bee Jamur.

(rtr)

Summer With Sizzling $181.8 Million

LOS ANGELES - Marvel-Disney’s “Captain America: Civil War” has opened the summer spectacularly with a dominant $181.8 million weekend at 4,266 U.S. locations.

The demonstrations outside parliament in the capital and in Thessaloniki were largely peace-ful, but small groups of protesters attacked riot police, who responded with tear gas. Inside the parliament building, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras survived a crucial test of his wafer-thin majority, as all 153

of the ruling coalition’s lawmakers in the 300-seat parliament voted in favour of the changes.

The reforms will reduce some pension payouts, merge a number of pension funds, increase social secu-rity contributions and put up taxes for middle and high earners. The measures have been deeply unpopu-

lar with anti-austerity campaigners and trade unions, but Mr Tsipras argued they would not affect most pensioners and moved the country towards a “sustainable” system.

“We have an important oppor-tunity before us for the country to break this vicious cycle, and enter a virtuous cycle,” he told lawmakers. But he came under attack from op-position leaders, who accused him of betraying voters who re-elected his government last September on promises to ease the pain of auster-ity and protect pensions.

“Mr Prime Minister, you prom-ised hope and turned it into despair,” said Fofi Gennimata, leader of the

opposition PASOK socialists. “The measures will be a tombstone for growth prospects,” said Kyriakos Mitsotakis, leader of the conserva-tive New Democracy party which leads in opinion polls.

The package aims to generate sav-ings equivalent to 3% of GDP, raising income tax for high earners, lowering tax-free thresholds and increasing a so-called “solidarity tax”.

More taxes could be in the offing, with newspapers reporting on Mon-day that Greece plans to increase VAT and introduce additional taxes on fuel and tobacco, overnight hotel stays and internet use. Eurozone finance ministers will meet later to

discuss Greece’s reform progress and whether it has met the terms of a multi-billion-euro bailout.

A positive outcome will see more than €5bn released to ease Greece’s financial burden and allow it to make debt repayments in June and July. (rtr)

ATHENS - Police come under attack as largely peaceful pro-tests against controversial tax and pension changes in Greece turn ugly. Police have been pelted with petrol bombs in Athens as Greece passed unpopular tax and pensions reforms. Thou-sands of protesters took to the streets ahead of a vote that the government hopes will unlock bailout cash and pave the way for progress on debt relief when eurozone finance ministers meet on Monday.
