Denpasar (Bali Post)—Loeana Kanginnadhi was reported to be

captured by the Directorate of Criminal De-tective Unit of Bali Police, Tuesday (Nov 1). This woman entrepreneur was arrested based on the allegation of money fraud worth USD 1 million reported by Putra Masagung. Even, Loeana had been named as a suspect. How-ever, the arrest seemed to have been hidden by the investigators of Bali Police.

-gung, Sunday (Nov 6), said he got informa-tion if Loeana Kanginnadhi had been arrested by investigator of Bali Police. Loeana was arrested shortly after she was coming to meet the summons of the investigator. “I heard she (Loeana—Ed) has been secured. Instead, she has been named as a suspect,” he said.

Information about the arrest of Loeana had once made his party shocked. Since reported by the victim, the concerned was always ab-sent. Even, the reported for all time had a rea-son if she was abroad. “Previously we could not believe in the information. So far, she (the reported) was always absent when summoned by the investigator,” he explained.

As the reported was frequently absent, it had made the victim furious. He thought the investigation in the Bali Police was sluggish. “We had time to ask for information about the development of the case to investigator why the case is protracted. Even, we also com-plained about the case to the Supreme Court,” he told reporters last Sunday. Moreover, the reported had been included on the police’s wanted list (DPO).

-tion started when the reported offered the land formerly belonging to Mulia Resort and KNPI in Nusa Dua with an area of approximately three hectares. The victim was interested to buy the land because the reported claimed if the land was not problematic. Over the time, the victim was asked to pay an upfront pay-ment amounting to USD 1 million.

In later development, the problem was not resolved by the reported. Even, she did not give any explanation. On that account, the victim made his own search to know about the status of the land. Ultimately, the victim knew if the land offered by the reported was in dispute. “We also received information if the other buyers also had interest in the land,” he explained.

The victim realized if he had been cheated because when collecting the money for many times, the reported never paid it back. At the end, the case was reported to Bali Police. Deputy Director of Criminal Detective Unit, Bali Police,

on Sunday (Nov 6) was not willing to provide information regarding the truth on the arrest of Loeana. He admitted if he was saying prayers. “I am now still praying,” wrote Bonar Sitinjak through a short message service. (kmb21)

A number of gamelan troupes in Bule-leng are now encouraged to preserve the gong pacek. They begin to change the gong gantung instrument and return it to gong pacek. It is undertaken so the gong pacek becoming the characteristic of Buleleng Regency will not vanish. One of the troupes faithfully preserving the gong pacek is Tri Pitaka Gamelan Troupe from Munduk Village, Banjar Subdistrict. Even, when invited to make a performance abroad, the troupe consistently brought the set of gong pacek and not gong gantung as the other troupes.

What is the difference of gong pacek from gong gantung? Actually they are distinguished by the set of gangsa, a kind of metallophone gamelan music. Blades of the gangsa instrument in the gong pacek are stuck by using nails or iron. Under the

are still able to generate a tone when they are struck. Meanwhile, the gangsa blades in the gong gantung are set up by suspend-ing. By and large, the gangsa blades are

suspended with a plastic strap or rope made of cowhide. The tone of gangsa blades in the gong pacek will immediately vanish after being hit, while in the gong gantung will sound longer after being hit. On that ac-count, gong pacek is judged suitable to play gamelan composition in kekebyaran genre requiring speed and dynamic rhythm.

The Tri Pitaka Gamelan Troupe, Munduk Village, when invited to Hong Kong in the framework of cultural mission consistently brought along the gong pacek instrument, last Saturday. The gamelan composition they played got glorious applause in the Hon Kong Cultural Hall.

Ida Rsi Agung Wayabya Suprabu Sogata Karang or Sudhyatmaka Sugriwa who led the entourage said the gamelan troupe from Munduk introduced the gong pacek and some distinctive dances of Northern Bali such as the Tarunajaya, Palawakya, Mulat Sarira Dance and gamelan compo-

Gonjang-Ganjing creation composed by Putu Putrawan. In addition, the troupe also

presented a collaboration entitled Gocek (combination of traditional games and cak-genjek a cappella).

According to him, the special perfor-mance was held for school children for two days, while the Gocek Workshop was orga-nized in a university attended by some 50 students. “Consul General Teguh Wardoyo in his speech said that he was very proud of the art performance of gong pacek from Buleleng that could jazz up the Hong Kong society,” said Ida Rsi.

Meanwhile, after each performance it was accompanied with interactive dialogue between the audience and the artists of the Tri Pitaka Art Studio led by Made Terip. The

Apparently the gamelan music of gong pacek was increasingly drawing the atten-tion of the world community, so that some other countries were also keen to invite the troupe and they hoped it could consistently bring the gong pacek. INITIALLY gong kebyar gamelan orchestra in Buleleng was played by using the gong pacek instruments. But after gong kebyar developed and went places, the instrument changed into gong gantung. As a matter of fact, to make kekebyaran gamelan music sound dynamic and fast, the instrument in use should be gamelan of gong pacek.

Putin will host host Wen in his native city of Saint Petersburg al-most exactly 10 years after the two countries joined forces with the four ex-Soviet Central Asian republics to form the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

Russia has previously billed the alliance as a regional alternative to NATO and discussed at past meetings the option of including other regional powers in its ranks.

“We are talking about Pakistan and Iran, which have applied for mem-bership,” Russian foreign ministry

spokesman Alexander Lukashevich told reporters ahead of the talks.

“India is also intent on joining, and Afghanistan has said it wants to be an observer,” the Russian spokes-man said.

But analysts said China prefers to view the group as primarily an economic organisation and note that Pakistan’s membership has already been under discussion for five years. Russia is also upset that the group still receives no formal recognition from NATO.

“Of course, SCO expansion is not

an easy process. It requires careful analysis and assessment,” the Rus-sian foreign ministry spokesman conceded.

The meeting between Wen and Putin will be their second since the Russian premier announced in Sep-tember plans to next year regain the Kremlin post he held in 2000-2008.

Bilateral relations are particularly important to Russia’s attempts to find new Asian clients for its energy ex-ports just as European growth stalls.

Ex-Pakistan leader Pervez Musharraf hit out Sunday at Afghan President Hamid Karzai for forging a training alliance with India, saying Islamabad had offered him similar help but been rebuffed.

“We’ve opened up all our training insti-tutions free of cost. Come to Pakistan and we’ll train you. Not one has come. What is his game?” Musharraf told CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS program.

Musharraf, who ruled Pakistan as a mili-tary dictator and later as a civilian president between 2001 and 2008 said he had been “bending backwards” for Karzai to send people to Islamabad instead of New Delhi.

He said that a phased pullout of US troops from Afghanistan, which is due to

be completed by 2014, had pushed Karzai closer to India.

“India is certainly -- certainly doing that. And unfortunately, the Afghan government is going along,” the former general said, adding that countries in the region are seeking to to fill the void left by America.

“I mean I know that diplomats, intel-ligence personnel, military men, security people go to India for training,” he said.

The former Pakistan leader however praised Karzai for recently stating that Afghanistan would back Pakistan if the United States were to launch a military attack on the latter, a prospect which Musharraf dismissed.

“I think it’s totally preposterous to imag-ine this kind of thing,” Musharraf said. “And then I thank him that this is the first time he’s made a pro-Pakistan statement.”

BEIJING — Thousands of people have donated more than $800,000 to Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei, some tossing cash folded into airplanes over his gate, he said Monday, to help him pay a tax bill they see as government harassment. A state-run newspaper criticized the outpouring and warned it could be illegal.

The donation campaign — also in the form of wire transfers and cash stuffed in envelopes or wrapped around fruit that is thrown into his yard — is rare for Chinese dissidents because of the threat of retaliation that comes with supporting high-profile government critics.

Nearly 20,000 people have sent more

than 5.3 million yuan ($840,000), Ai said, since he announced a week ago that the Beijing tax bureau was demanding that he pay 15 million yuan ($2.4 million) in back taxes and fines.

“This shows that a group of people who want to express their views are using their money to cast their votes,” Ai told The Associ-ated Press. “It shows that in the Internet age, society will have its own judgment and its own values. People are using these methods to re-examine the accusation that I evaded taxes.”

Ai, an internationally acclaimed con-ceptual artist, was detained for nearly three months earlier this year amid an overall crackdown on dissent, setting off concern well beyond the arts circles and civil rights community in which he is well-known.

Trekkers on the first flights Monday morning were happy to reach Katmandu, Nepal’s capital and the biggest city in the Hima-layan nation. “It has been misty and cloudy for the whole week, but everyone has been fantastic keeping us fed and giving wa-ter,” said Megan Freese, a travel manager from Hants, United Kingdom. “We are OK we have made it back now.”

By the weekend, more than 2,000 foreigners were strand-ed in Lukla since flights were grounded Oct. 31. The village sits at an altitude of 9,200 feet (2,800 meters), and its Tenzing-Hillary Airport is the gateway for trekkers and mountaineers head-ing to Everest and surrounding mountains.

Autumn is prime trekking sea-son in the Everest region, and the visitors were on the “Everest base camp trek,” where they travel on foot from Lukla for a week to reach Mount Everest’s base camp at 17,400 feet (5,300 meters).

Mountaineering in Nepal is most popular in May, so the re-cent weather did not affect climb-ers. The Lukla airport, carved on a mountainside, has one short runway and limited parking for planes. In good weather, it is still limited to small planes that carry 18 passengers.

Some 20 flights took off from Lukla airport Monday morning and more were expected through out the day, area police chief Ramesh Khakda said.

The trekkers had no major

health problems after their delay, the chief said. “Most of them were worried about expired visas, missing their scheduled flights and not making it back to their jobs on time but no other major problems,” Khadka said. More than 500 trekkers had al-ready arrived in Katmandu by midmorning and the number was expected to exceed 1,000 by the end of the day, said Purna Prasad Chudal, manager at Katmandu’s domestic airport.

The stranded trekkers are a variety of nationalities. Most of their porters, guides and support staff are hired in the Everest region. Some who are from Katmandu were returning home on the flights that resumed Monday.

German trekkers who were rescued by helicopter arrive at the airport in Katmandu, Ne-pal, Sunday, Nov. 6, 2011. More than 1,000 foreign trekkers are stranded in the foothills of Mount Everest because bad weather has not allowed planes to take off or land at the area’s only airport.

SIMPANG AMPEK - Flood has been inundating 932 houses in Sasak sub-district, West Sumatra, in the past few days, forcing some 800 people to evacuate to higher ground.

The flood made Maligi village isolated because it could not be

reached either by sea or land, acting Nagari Sasak Mayor Roni said on Sunday.

He feared that residents of the village would run out of food as the flood had hit the village over the past week.

“We need food and tent assis-tance,” he said.

He said the flood was inundat-

ing 932 houses at a height of 1 to 1.5 meters.

By Sunday rains continued to fall in the area, causing local residents to panic.

“We fear various diseases will affect residents because flood water has been inundating their houses over the past few days,” he said.

The population exceeded the national projection of 237.6 mil-lion with an annual growth rate of 1.49 percent based on the results of the census, BKKBN Chief Secretary Sudibyo Alimoeso said here on Sunday.

“The projection is based on last year’s population census so our population has increased this year,” he said.

With an annual population growth of 1.49 percent, the Indo-nesian population increased by 3.5

million per year, he said.“So if our population stood at

237.6 million in 2010 it must grow by 3.5 million to more than 241 million this year,” he said.

If the country did not keep down the population growth the population would increase to 450 million in 2045. This meant that one of every 20 people in the world would be Indonesian, he said.

He said the government needed to revise the present projection of

the country’s population.“If we still rely on the previous

projection we fear it will have an impact on national food supplies,” he said.

He said the projection of the Indonesian population far ex-ceeded the reality because of large deviation and therefore, it must be revised soon.

The inaccurate projection of the population would have an impact on the fulfillment of basic needs such as health care, food, housing and job opportunities, he said.

“Based on the calculation of food and nutrition needs, an ex-cess of 4 million will have a far-reaching effect on all population sectors,” he said.

JAKARTA - The government will give a Rp200 million bonus to every Indonesian athlete who wins a gold medal in the upcom-ing 26th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in Palembang, South Sumatra, and Jakarta on November 11-22.

Silver and bronze medalists meanwhile will each receive Rp50 million and Rp30 million respectively, Sports Minister Andi Mallarangeng said.

“The bonus is to be given (to the athletes) individually and not on a shared basis,” he said.

So, a badminton player in a singles event will get Rp200 mil-lion if he or she wins a gold medal and so will each of the players in the doubles event, he said.

The minister hoped with the equal bonus for all gold medal-ists, Indonesian athletes would be motivated to contribute to Indonesia`s gold medal collection effort at the event.

He said Indonesia was target-

ing the Sea Games overall cham-pion title and 25 percent or more of the gold medals offered in all sport branches.

The biennial event will be officially opened at Jakabaring, Palembang, South Sumatra, at-tended by President Susilo Bam-bang Yudhoyono.

Vice President Boediono on Friday meanwhile saw off the country`s athletes who would compete in the Games.

In his speech he expressed hope that the athletes could show their best performance and thus contribute to the country`s glory.

He pointed out Indonesia was the overall champion of the 10th SEA Games in 1979, the 15th SEA Games in 1987 and the 19th SEA Games in 1997.

A total of 44 sport branches would be competed in the event with 542 gold medals for grabs. Indonesia is sending 1,058 ath-letes to compete in the event along with athletes from ASEAN`s 10 member countries and Timor Leste.

JAKARTA - Indonesia is to host a three-day World Delta Summit in Jakarta on Novem-ber 21-24, 2011 as agreed at a delta conference in Rotterdam in 2010, a spokesman for the event`s organizers said.

Prof Jan Sopaheluwakan, chairman of the National Delta Summit 2011 Committee, told the press here on Thursday, the World Delta Summit 2011 was very important because it would discuss various issues and challenges to be faced by river deltas.

He said Indonesia was elected to host the summit because of its rich biodiversity and, more spe-cifically, because it had a num-ber of fertile deltas in rivers like the Ciliwung, the Batanghari, the Mahakam, the Makassar, the Brantas and Memberamo.

Indonesia was also consid-ered able to play an important role as initiator of delta preser-vation efforts on a global scale, he said, adding that the summit was expected to produce a joint commitment and concrete solu-

tion to protect river deltas.Preservation of river deltas

would also contribute to the conservation of human civi-lization in the interest of the world`s children and future generations.

The summit would discuss issues related to river deltas, en-vironmental problems, climate change and the role of river delta preservation practitioners as well as international institutions like the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, UN bodies and connecting Delta Cities.

Jan said the aim of the sum-mit was to increase the people`s awareness of the future of river deltas about which there was now increasing concern.

Therefore, there was a need for greater participation of the people, governments, scientists, academics and businesspeople in river delta preservation efforts, he said.

River deltas are now also among the vulnerable parts of the Earth as about 50 percent of the world`s urban population live on or around river deltas, he said.

Uluwatu Temple IBP

One of the famous sites that always visit by tourists when holidaying to Bali is Uluwatu. Uluwatu Temple is a Hindu temple set on the cliff bank in south part of Bali Peninsula. It is one of Sad Kahyangan Temple in Bali (six big groups of Bali Temples), located in Pecatu Village, Sub district of South Kuta, and Badung Regency or about 25 Km southerly part of Denpasar town. It is situated on the coral reef sordid to sea about 80 meters above the sea level. It is featured by a small dry forest which is mostly called by Alas Kekeran (interdict forest) which is belong to the temple and dwelt by a lot of monkeys and other animal. Name of Uluwatu was come from the word Ulu meaning the head and Watu meaning stone. Therefore Uluwatu Temple mean the temple built in tip of coral reef.

In the right and left of temple building or Pel-inggih Ida Bagus Ratu Jurit located in complex of Uluwatu Temple, there are two stone man-gers that look like a boat. When both of it are united, hence it’s look similar to sarcophagus, the famous stone from megalithic era culture. There is archaeology omission coming from 16 centuries in firm of arch or winged entrance gate. Winged entrance gate is one of the scarce archaeology omissions. Winged entrance gate that is existing in Uluwatu Temple (a period of

its making) can be compared with the same one located in mosque complex in Sendangduwur Village, Lamongan, East Java. The period of its making is relevant with the year Candraseng-kala found at this inscription. Candrasengkala founded in the mosque is written by the word-ing Gunaning Salira Tirta Hayu meaning year 1483 Saka or 1561 Masehi.

If the sarcophagus that existing in Dalem Jurit complex area represents the artifact, hence Uluwatu Temple represents the place sanctified since era of megalithic culture (About 500 S.M). In papyrus of Usana Bali mentioned that Mpu Kuturan (The Hindu Priest who spread out the Hinduism in Bali) had built a lot of temple in this island and one of them Uluwatu Temple.

Implicit at papyrus Padma Bhuwana that Uluwatu Temple draw in the direction that is located in Southwest functioning to worship the Rudra God, one of the god in nine god (Dewata Nawa Sanga). Rudra God is the Deity Siwa as Pemralina or return to provenance. In this pa-pyrus also mention that Uluwatu Temple is the Kahyangan World worshiped by entire Hindu people. Since this area is opened for public, it is visited by many people from all over the world because it has beautiful panorama with spectacular sunset and stunning view of Indian Ocean and deep the cliff bank. It is the perfect to visit in Bali.

Oil prices rose to near $95 a barrel Monday in Asia after Greek leaders agreed to a coalition government that will likely approve an European Union-led bailout package.

Benchmark crude for December delivery was up 33 cents at $94.59 a barrel at midday Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 19 cents to settle at $94.26 in New York on Friday.

Brent crude was up $1.01 at $112.98 a barrel on the ICE Futures Exchange in London.

Greece’s embattled prime minister and main opposition leader agreed Sunday to form an interim government to ensure the country’s new European debt deal, capping a week of political turmoil that saw Greece face a catastrophic default that threatened its euro membership and roiled international markets.

Prime Minister George Papandreou also agreed to step down halfway through his four-year term. Any interim government that is formed with the support of both major parties will be almost guaranteed to push the European rescue package through parliament, which would provide Greece with an additional $179 billion (euro 130 billion) in rescue loans and bank support.

Crude has jumped about 25 percent from $75 on Oct. 4 amid grow-ing investor optimism that Europe will be able to at least temporarily contain its sovereign debt crisis. However, some analysts say the crisis has already undermined economic growth.

“Even if a reasonable temporary solution is achieved (in Greece), debt problems in Italy will continue to provide an obstacle to sustain-able European economic growth,” energy consultant Ritterbusch and Associates in a report. “We look for the eurozone to continue to provide a mix of headlines that will keep trading quite volatile.”

In other Nymex trading, heating oil rose 2.3 cents to $3.09 per gallon and gasoline futures jumped 3.7 cents to $2.70 per gallon. Natural gas slid 3.9 cents at $3.74 per 1,000 cubic feet.

The plea from the heads of Toyota Motor Corp., Nissan Motor Co., Hon-da Motor Co. as well as representatives from auto unions and dealers — a rare show of combined forces — un-derlines the industry’s crisis from the March tsunami disaster, the surging yen and stagnant sales.

“This goes beyond the problem of a hollowing out of the economy. The industry could be destroyed,” Toyota President Akio Toyoda said

clenched fists. “Once jobs are lost overseas, it is impossible to recover them.”

-tain manufacturing in Japan as much as possible to keep technological development going, as well as pro-tecting jobs.

But the odds are stacked against them, they said, partly because of a complex system of taxation on cars estimated to be about twice or triple those in Great Britain and Germany, and a whopping 49 times the U.S.

Also battering Japan’s manufactur-ers has been the strong yen, which eats away at the value of overseas sales. Each time the dollar falls by one yen, the eight major Japanese automakers lose 80 billion yen ($1 billion).

The auto execs appear to have public opinion on their side. They were taking to the government a peti-tion demanding the end of such taxes, signed by more than 4.3 million people in just two months.

Japanese taxes, which are paid each year for ownership in addition to the time of purchase, are so high that over a decade a car owner pays more in taxes than their original outlay on the vehicle, they said.

Reducing the tax burden would po-tentially add some 920,000 vehicles to annual auto sales in Japan, according to a government estimate.

Japan’s annual sales of new autos have shrunk to about 4.25 million ve-hicles, falling from a peak 7.8 million vehicles in 1990.

Studies show younger people’s interest in cars has been fading rapidly,

especially in urban areas. Rural resi-dents tend to need more than one car per household, but are suffering from the heavy tax burden.

The March 11 earthquake and tsu-nami in northeastern Japan disrupted parts supplies and slowed production,

automakers. Just as they were start-ing to recover and make up for lost production, the recent flooding in Thailand has disrupted the supply chain again.

Toyoda said Japan needs to recover from the disaster, and help for the auto industry is critical in the recovery.

“Please look at all of us who are here today,” he told reporters at a To-kyo hotel. “We want to speed up the recovery so we are all here.”

The representatives also asked that tax breaks on green cars, which began in 2008 and are set to end next year, be continued to keep sales of hybrids and electric vehicles going.

“The sense of crisis we have is unprecedented,” said Nissan Chief

China is likely to inject more than 1 trillion yuan ($158 billion) into the money market in the next two months via annual

Journal on Monday quoted a research report as saying. The injection will help improve liquidity, which has been impacted

by the government’s tight monetary policy in place since October last year, the newspaper quoted the report by China International Capital Corp (CICC) as saying.

The Finance Ministry typically offers subsidies to various industries and sectors in the last two months of each year as part of distribution of the government’s annual tax income.

The ministry does not publicize these subsidies but the market esti-mated they totaled 1 trillion-2 trillion yuan in 2010.

The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) has not raised interest rates or bank reserve requirement ratios (RRR) since July in a sign that the government may be considering loosening its tight monetary stance amid the market turmoil sparked by the euro zone debt crisis.

The central bank previously instituted a slew of rate and RRR hikes

Those steps offset the impact of liquidity injections via Finance Ministry subsidies late last year, but the market widely expects the PBOC will leave the subsidies to improve market liquidity this year, traders have said.

On the weekend in which Rat-ner’s latest project with Murphy, the Universal-distributed caper comedy “Tower Heist,” opened to a soft $25 million, the filmmaker added, “It’s been a great experience. He’s come out and really supported the film. What I’m excited about is, we just have a great collaboration ... I really

love working with him. To me, he’s my hero.”

He seems to mean it. Ratner, who is producing next year’s Academy Awards, has brought Murphy on to host the show. And Murphy -- or at least his voice -- stars in Ratner’s upcoming animated film “Hong Kong Phooey.”

Ratner said that Murphy was instrumental in his directing career -- even if the actor didn’t know it. “’Rush Hour’ wouldn’t have existed if it wasn’t for Eddie, because I studied

his movies,” Ratner said. “No one did an action comedy better than him.”

In “Tower Heist,” the director said, he particularly enjoyed watching the actor return to the sort of “street role” he played early in his career. “We didn’t see him do a street character in so long,” he said. “He just hasn’t played that street character ... He chose to do some different types of movies which are kind of family movies.”

And he said the movie, about working people who try to recover money they lost to a Wall Street billionaire’s Ponzi scheme, wasn’t meant to make any statement.

“It’s nice to make a movie that’s about something or is in the zeitgeist,” he said. “But really, we set out ... to make a fun movie that was entertain-ing. We weren’t trying to pound in some kind of message in there.”

LOS ANGELES - Coldplay debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 album chart on Wednesday with “Mylo Xyloto,” while pop star Rihanna scored her 11th No. 1 single with “We Found Love” on the Hot 100 chart.

“Mylo Xyloto,” the fifth studio album from Coldplay, sold 447,000 copies in the first week of its release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It beat out stiff competition from “American Idol” alumnus Kelly Clarkson, who entered the charts at No. 2 with her fifth album, “Stronger,” selling 163,00 copies.

This is the third studio album for British rockers Coldplay to debut at No. 1, following their 2005 release “X&Y” and 2008’s “Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends.”

Coldplay’s latest record is the third biggest-sell-ing album to top the charts this year, and the largest single-week sales for a rock record in nearly three years, according to Jim Donio, president of the National Association of Recording Merchandisers

(NARM), a music business association. The band have also broken their own record,

previously held by “Viva La Vida,” for highest-ever first week album sales on iTunes stores worldwide, amassing over 500,000 copies sold across all 35 iTunes stores, a representative for Capitol Records said.

“Mylo Xyloto” has received mixed reviews, despite its chart-topping success. Rolling Stone’s Josh Eells gave the record three-and-a-half stars, saying “the choruses are bigger, the textures grander, the optimism more optimistic,” but other critics were less impressed.

Alexis Petridis of British newspaper The Guard-ian, criticized the lack of evolution in Coldplay’s music and said that a lot of the album “just sounds like standard-issue Coldplay, replete with echoing guitars, woah-oh choruses and vocals that signify high drama by slipping into falsetto.” British singer Adele, who has been dominating the album charts with “21,” dropped to No. 4 as Michael Buble’s holiday album ‘Christmas,” released last week ahead of the festive season, debuted at No. 3.

LOS ANGELES — Lindsay Lohan has checked into jail for a 30-day sentence, though she could be released within hours due to overcrowding.

The judge imposed a compli-cated sentence, telling Lohan that she will now have to perform all of her community service at the county morgue or risk serving an additional 270 days in jail.

It’s Lohan’s fifth jail sentence since being arrested twice for drunken driving in 2007. She last served 35 days on house arrest on a four month jail sentence.

ROME - Art restorers have discovered the figure of a devil hidden in the clouds of one of the most famous frescos by Giotto in the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, church officials said on Saturday. The devil was hidden in the details of clouds at the top of fresco number 20 in the cycle of the scenes in the life and death of St Francis painted by Giotto in the 13th century.

The discovery was made by Italian art historian Chi-ara Frugone. It shows a profile of a figure with a hooked nose, a sly smile, and dark horns hidden among the clouds in the panel of the scene depict-ing the death of St Francis. The figure is difficult to see from the floor of the ba-silica but emerges clearly in close-up photography.

Sergio Fusetti, the chief restorer of the basilica, said Giotto probably never wanted the image of the devil to be a main part of the fresco and may have

painted it in among the clouds “to have a bit of fun.”

The master may have painted it to spite someone he knew by portraying him as a devil in the painting, Fusetti said on the convent’s website. The artwork in the basilica in the convent where St Francis is buried was last restored after it was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1997.

At $20,000 for the body alone, the Cinema EOS is not cheap by consumer standards but is on the low end of what professional digital film cameras cost, which can reach into the six figures. Two zoom lenses intended for movie making will go for $45,000 and $47,000.

Making such costly cameras for professional users is somewhat of a departure for Canon, which makes up more than a third of its revenue from consumer electronics, and more than half from office equipment like all-in-one printer-copier-fax machines. In an interview with The Associated Press, Mitarai said Canon’s move into expensive high-end products for professionals comes in response to the rising yen and the movement of manufacturing to cheaper-labor countries abroad.

“Anything without high added value is now being manufactured in

southeast Asian countries and China. So we need to shift into an era where all our products have an added value,” Mitarai said. “That is one major trend in meeting the difficulties posed by the strong yen.”

The camera draws on the popular-ity of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, a single-lens reflex still camera that the company introduced in 2008 and which became widely embraced by independent filmmakers because of its ability to take full high-definition video at the 1920-by-1080 pixel resolution known as 1080p. It didn’t take long for its popularity to reach Hollywood.

The Mark II was used in the final episode of the last season of Fox’s television show “House M.D.,” as well as in the car racing scenes of “Iron Man 2” and certain scenes in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” movies that Paramount distributed.

As smart phones increasingly take over, mobile data traffic is surging, a study by Swedish telecom equipment maker Ericsson showed on Monday, say-ing such traffic is set to increase 10-fold over the next five years.

In its Traffic and Market Data report, which Ericsson said was based on mea-surements “recorded over several years in live networks covering all regions of the world,” the company said global smartphone traffic was expected to triple during 2011 alone.

“Mobile broadband subscriptions

will reach almost five billion in 2016, up from the expected 900 million by the end of 2011,” the company said, pointing out that “that would represent 60 percent year-on-year growth.” The surge in internet access over the next five years, regardless of the device used, was expected to especially be driven by video, Ericsson said.

The report also signaled a growing digital divide between the smartphone haves and the have-nots. “By 2016, us-ers living (in urban areas covering) less than one percent of the Earth’s total area are set to generate around 60 percent of mobile traffic,” the report said.

The clash between Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola and Argentine Marcelo Bielsa had been eagerly anticipated and produced a breath-less encounter in Bilbao. Barca keeper Victor Valdes was beaten for the first time in 10 matches

front in the 20th minute, but Cesc Fabregas headed the visitors level just four minutes later.

Standing water on the pitch added to the tension and the condi-tions contributed to both late goals. A Bilbao corner 10 minutes from time was cleared badly by Eric Abidal and the ball rebounded off two players before Pique nudged it past Valdes.

In the frantic closing minutes Bilbao’s Fernando Amorebieta was sent off for a second yellow card and Barca grabbed an equaliser after a free kick, which pinged around the area until it fell to Messi to score his 14th this season. “We have shown a lot of character and maintained our unbeaten start,” Fabregas told Spanish television. “It was a very

difficult match especially in the second half with such a wet pitch. “It was typical match at San Mames against a team with a great spirit and fantastic fans.”

GOLDEN BOOT

At the Bernabeu, Ronaldo, the world’s most expensive player paraded the Golden Boot before kickoff for the 40 league goals he scored last season, and he boosted his bid to win it again with another sparkling performance at the Bern-abeu. Argentina winger Angel Di

for Ronaldo, Pepe and Gonzalo Higuain before being carried off with a torn thigh muscle at the start of the second half.

Ronaldo notched his second goal from the penalty spot in the 54th when Osasuna had defender Eneko Satrustegui sent off, and he completed his fourth league treble this season in the 57th, taking his La Liga tally to 13. Substitute Karim Benzema wrapped up the scoring

with two more goals to complete the rout and Real’s 10th successive win in all competitions.

Injury-hit Osasuna, thrashed 8-0 by Barcelona in September, had drawn level at 1-1 in the 31st minute when Ibrahima took advantage of a quickly-taken free kick to beat Iker Casillas. “We have totally deserved these 10 victories. They have come from our great effort, without luck, and as a consequence of the good games we have played,” Mourinho said.

Valencia are third with 24 points after winning the city derby 2-0 at Levante on Saturday, pushing the season’s surprise early pace-setters down to fourth with 23 points. Granada drew 0-0 at home with fel-low strugglers Racing Santander and Villarreal drew 0-0 at Espanyol.

Helder Postiga netted a last-ditch equaliser for Real Zaragoza in a 2-2 draw with Sporting Gijon and Rayo Vallecano made the most of a red card for Real Sociedad’s Inigo Martinez after only 12 minutes to run out 4-0 winners.

PARIS -Ligue 1 matches but their 1-1 draw at Girondins Bordeaux still kept the big spenders three points clear at the top on Sunday. Second-placed Montpellier were also held 1-1 at St Etienne while Olympique Lyon went down 2-1 at Sochaux with improving Olympique Marseille the only side among the big clubs to register a win with a 2-0 home suc-cess over Nice.

PSG took the lead at Bordeaux thanks to Mohamed Sissoko’s header on nine minutes but the hosts hit back soon after through in-form Yoan Gouffran after good work by impressive left back Benoit Tremoulinas. The game then petered out with 2009 champions Bordeaux, who had been in abject form before a win over Ajaccio last weekend, more than holding their own against the favourites for the title.

Montpellier had similar troubles in breaking down a stout defence

corner. Fourth-placed Lyon were also playing mid-table opposition in Sochaux but lost despite dominating possession for long spells to slip seven points adrift of PSG after 13 games.

Remi Garde’s side went behind to Anthony Reveillere’s 10th min-ute own goal only for Alexandre Lacazette to soon equalise for Lyon

penalty just before the break after being fouled by Aly Cissokho then handed Sochaux the lead again and the 11th-placed side clung on amid intense pressure.

“If we have to score three goals each time to win, it is going to get complicated,” Garde told reporters after Lyon’s fourth straight away loss in the league. “I think the emotional impact of the derbies against St Etienne, the Champions League clash with Real Madrid and lots of matches with almost always the same players means we lacked a bit of freshness.”

Olympique Marseille endured a dreadful start to the campaign but shot up to eighth after their third league win in a row, substitute

penalty in stoppage time to outwit Nice. Stade Rennes, whose coach Frederic Antonetti has put his own future in doubt, could only draw

-ingly lost 2-0 at Auxerre. Nancy beat Stade Brest 2-1, Caen overcame Dijon 3-0 and Lorient defeated Ajaccio 2-0 in other Sunday matches. Third-placed champions Lille drew 1-1 with Evian on Saturday

Spies had earlier escaped from a big battle for second to chase down Stoner as the rain fell - the Australian having pulled away in the earlier, less treacher-ous, stages. Honda rider Stoner said the weather had made it an extraordinarily tough race from the outset.

“All weekend to be honest the con-ditions have been atrocious really,” he said. “The conditions weren’t wet, they weren’t dry, and then even when we had a dry track it wasn’t really dry, there were always some spots or some wet patches. The conditions have just been really difficult to deal with and the race was no different.

“There was rain the whole race - just little bits and pieces, it would change

what corner it was and how hard it was lap by lap, so you didn’t really know how hard to go into each corner as you were approaching it.” He felt he was in complete control until the rain intensi-fied late on.

“We built up a really good lead, re-ally comfortable, and every time I felt there was a bit too much rain I’d back off, wait for the rain to subside, they’d catch me a bit and then I’d be able to in-crease the lead again. And I felt pretty good out there. The bike was working well,” Stoner said. “Then it got to the point where it just started to rain heavier and heavier, and I went into a couple of corners and the rear came round on me and I just really wasn’t

too keen on pushing any harder than I was and I thought ‘at least when they catch up, if somebody does come past, I’ll keep going at what I’m comfort-able with and when somebody comes past I’ll be able to see then where the limits are and if they’re getting a bit slippery or not.’

“Ben came past after I made a small mistake and hit neutral, and he was looking great - he was riding the corners really nicely, smoothly. I was able to catch him a little bit on the brakes and the acceleration points, but other than that I didn’t think I was going to get a chance to do anything and I wasn’t really willing to take any risks.” But he said he then realised that with nothing to lose, he may as well throw caution to the wind on the run to the flag.

“I suppose on the last half of the last lap, I thought ‘this is it, this is the last lap of the year for us’ and I just decided to go for it and take some risks that I haven’t taken all season,” Stoner explained.

MOTO2 champion Stefan Bradl will make his Mo-toGP debut this week when he joins the LCR team for the post-season test at Valencia. The German will ride the Honda RC212V from the team, which said it will announce its riders for the 2012 season in the upcom-ing days.

LCR confirmed on Sunday that Spaniard Toni Elias will leave the team, with Bradl and Randy de Puniet believed to be among the candidates for the ride.

“In a few days, together with our sponsors and Honda, we will make a final decision on the riders for 2012,” said team boss Lucio Cecchi-nello.

“Meanwhile, we welcome the request from HRC to provide our RC212V to Mo-to2 champion Stefan Bradl to give him the opportunity to try out a MotoGP bike.”

Stoner admits he threw caution to the wind in Valencia

World champion Casey Stoner said he took more risks in the last half-lap of the MotoGP season finale at Valencia than he had all year as he snatched victory from Ben Spies in a thrilling conclusion to the 2011 campaign. Stoner beat Spies over the line by just 0.015 seconds after getting a better run out of the last corner in slippery conditions.
