signer L’Wren Scott, committed suicide in March. A memorial was held in New York last week.

Martin doesn’t quite have Jagger’s moves, but the singer danced wildly onstage with his arms swinging as he sang tunes from the band’s catalog, including songs from their new album “Ghost Stories,” out May 19.

He played the piano and guitar through-out the hour-long set at the Beacon Theatre, performing well-known hits like “Speed of Sound,” ‘’Clocks,” and “Viva la Vida” as col-orful laser lights beamed and white stars hung from the ceiling above the stage. Confetti burst from the sides of the stage after they performed the dance-flavored tunes “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall” and “A Sky Full of Stars.”

Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow, who married in 2003, announced they were separating in March. While singing the song “Magic” — which features lyrics like “No I don’t ... want anybody else than you” — one girl yelled: “Hang in there, Chris!” The British four-some closed the show with “True Love,” which Martin asked the

crowd not to film and post on YouTube.“(This) is the best song off our new album

that no one has ever heard yet,” he said. “Sometimes you have to keep these things to yourself.” He made a heart symbol with his hands after performing the tune, which included the lyrics, “Once upon a time I was yours, you were mine.”

“Ghost Stories,” the Grammy-winning group’s sixth album, features production work from Paul Epworth, best known for producing and co-writing “Rolling In the Deep” and other tracks on Adele’s colossal “21” album.

LOS ANGELES — Jason Derulo knows his recent hit, “Talk Dirty,” is risque, but he’s not too worried about it. “I try to be conscious of offending anybody, but not that much,” he said. “I really just try to do my thing and of course there is going to be backlash on every song that I do, so I don’t worry myself too much on that. People saying things like ‘objectifying women.’ I’m like, ‘What are you even talking about?’”

“Talk Dirty” has dominated pop radio, and the song has peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It has sold 3.2 million tracks and features lyrics like “but your booty don’t need explaining” and “first-class seat on my lap girl.”

“I wasn’t surprised that it would hit mainstream. I think in 2014 things, you know, are getting more and more free (and) liberal,” he said. “I hear a lot worse.”

The smash is from Derulo’s third album of the same name; it debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 albums chart last month. The album was released internation-ally last September under the title “Tattoos,” but the renamed American version features some new tracks. Derulo, 24, says both his new album and single reflect his growth as a singer and songwriter.

“I’m comfortable with talking about what my life is and things that I go through,” said Derulo, whose hits include “Whatcha Say” and “In My Head.” “This album is a direct representation of who I am as a person and how I speak,” he added. “If I was talking to

my best friend, you know, this is how I would explain it.”The album is Derulo’s first to feature guest stars, and hip-

hop acts are a strong part of the pop singer’s project. Snoop Dogg, 2 Chainz, Pitbull, Tyga and Kid Ink make appearances.

Derulo, who is finding more success on the urban charts thanks to “Talk Dirty,” says he started

musically in the hip-hop scene.“Most people don’t know my back-

ground, but when I first started writing songs for other people it was for hip-hop

artists,” said Derulo, who co-wrote Bird-man’s “Bossy” and songs for Diddy that didn’t make his album.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. LEGIAN - The repeater guests of All Season Legian, Gerry and Debbie trained some staffs of the hotel in the field of Live Com-munication Skill recently. The program that was arranged by Human resource Manager yanti was dedicated to improvr staff’s business performance & personal wellbeing.

“We cannot resolve this problem alone because the problem of Meng-wi terminal is the responsibility of all parties. Central government, Bali, Badung and Denpasar municipality government must be all involved to find out the solution,” said the Head of the Badung Transportation, Com-munication and Informatics Agency, Wayan Weda Dharmaja, Monday (May 5).

Weda admitted that his party could not do more following the recent de-mand of taxi drivers that complained about the quiet condition of Mengwi terminal. He claimed to only be able to forward their aspirations to central government.

He said that various measures had been undertaken ranging from

socialization of Mengwi terminal to change the traffic flow around Mengwitani. In fact, it did not resolve the problem. There were many other issues such as the in-terprovincial (AKAP) buses that dropped off passengers outside the terminal, even in the region of Tabanan. So far, his party was also overwhelmed to take action. Based on territory, the buses dropping off passengers in the Tabanan area were not the responsibility of Badung. In addition, there were also buses that passed through Badung but their operation license up to Padangbai, Karangasem.

To that end, his party recently had been making coordination with the Directorate General of Land

Transportation. In the coordination was delivered that the function of terminal condition was far from its proper function as a terminal of type A. “We actually have delivered the problem of Mengwi terminal. Now, we’re just waiting for the commit-ment and central government should also be firm,” he said.

His party also hoped that Bali government could immediately communicate this problem. He said the provincial government would bridge the interests of each region so that a solution could be imme-diately obtained. “It’s not intended to escape from any responsibility. But we think this issue will soon be completed if all parties can move,” he said. (kmb25)

SEMARAPURA - Dredging of cliff on the east side of Melan-git River, Bakas village, Banjarangkan, to make road access, as carried out by the Bakas Levi Rafting was very much deplored by local community leader, I Wayan Sumardika, Monday (May 5). According to him, dredging a cliff with a bulldozer could not be done arbitrarily. Sumardika assessed the fact indicating the weak protection given to the environment. This phenomenon did not only occur in Klungkung, but almost in every other county / municipality in Bali.

Sumardika previously reporting the Bakas Levi Rafting to the National Police Commission said that no people utilized the road access made by dredging because the access was closed with a door. He also added that many local people protested it, but the protest was always faced with a dead end. “Dredging a cliff with the reason to arrange the environment by means of bulldozer cannot be done arbitrarily. It has been set forth according to regulation,” he said.

Sumardika explained, there were at least four laws having been violated such as the Law No. 32/2009 concerning with environmen-tal protection and management, Law No.26/2007 concerning with spatial arrangement, Law No.41/2009 concerning with sustainable agricultural land protection and Law No.5/1960 concerning with the basis of the principal agrarian regulations. Sumardika mentioned that in Bali there were many rafting companies. However, they did not need to bulldoze or dredge a cliff to make road access, except for Bakas Levi Rafting.

In addition, it also stemmed the river with concrete construction. As a result, it caused silting. “Managing a river should also meet the rules,” he said. Sumardika asked the Integrated Licensing Of-fice to be transparent and open in the licensing process, especially in the matters concerning then natural environment.

Then, Sumardika also asked the judiciary team to firmly escort the regional bylaw (Perda) and other legislations in the region. To be able to show off the authority of local govern-ment, it should act in accordance with this authority. It should not let any business activity easily sacrifice the environment by breaking various rules.

Related to his report to the National Police Commission, he asked police to follow it up proportionally and professionally. Police should not let themselves be taken advantage of by other interests. Previously, the Head of Licensing Office, Made Sudiarkajaya, asserted the rock dredging was done without permission of the local government. After he checked, there was no application for permission of Bakas Levi Rafting. However, the statement was not followed by decisive action of the judiciary team.

Meanwhile, the Manager of Bakas Levi Rafting, Nyoman Levi Suweta, after this case emerged dismissed the allegation to have committed environmental destruction. Levi confirmed that his party only tried to arrange the local environment in meeting safety requirements for the rafting activities. His party was required to provide road access within easy reach when any incident took place while rafting such as drowning or falling, so the emergency assistance could be given quickly. Before building, he also claimed to have coordinated with local customary and administrative vil-lage authorities.

He said the village authority had agreed. Levi denied that many local residents protested the activity. He emphasized the road ac-cess was opened to the public, not just for his business interest. Bakas Levi Rafting is known as one of the favorite rafting opera-tors in Bali and has become one of the Bali tourist attractions in Klungkung. (kmb31)

The region in and around Miami has long pinned its financial fortunes on real estate and banking, but a combination of factors — the recent recession that shook those economic drivers coupled with an increase in cloud computing, the rapid growth of mobile devices in Latin America, and the area’s vast health care industry — now have civic leaders and local en-trepreneurs making a push to diversify into the tech industry.

“We’re not trying to replicate what other tech hubs are doing. We want to complement them,” said Daniel LaFu-ente, a 26-year-old Miami native who co-founded the new, open workspace and tech training center Lab Miami. “Miami is a place that provides its own benefits: lower costs of living, no income taxes, the proximity to Latin America and the beach.”

Two years ago, the idea of a tech hub in Miami seemed a longshot to LaFuente and his partner Wifredo Fernandez. The recent University of Pennsylvania graduates had returned to their hometown but found few innovative business opportunities. So they created their own in a small room in Miami’s gritty Wynwood Arts District, a place where free-

LOS ANGELES — An annual spring party in a Southern California beach town devolved into a riot last month when revel-ers turned violent, rocking cars, smashing windows and throwing rocks. Dozens were injured and about 50 people ended up in the hospital, including several police officers. Today, as authorities seek help with the in-vestigation in Isla Vista, they’re employing a new online and mobile app that designers say was created specifically for this type of situation.

“When the public really wants to catch these bad guys as badly as we do, this is the mechanism,” said Los Angeles Sheriff’s Cmdr. Scott Edson, who helped conceptual-ize the system in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings. “They can help us by sending us pictures and video.”

The innovation, known as LEEDIR, the Large Emergency Event Digital Information Repository, pairs an app with cloud storage to help police use smartphones as tools to gather evidence.

Proponents say the crowdsourcing system gives authorities a secure, central repository for the countless electronic tips that can come in during a crisis. And since it uses remote database servers that police access online, floods of data won’t cause system crashes or be expensive to store. Most agencies, Edson said, “don’t have lots of bandwidth lying around.” Privacy advocates criticize the app as overly broad, saying it subjects innocent people to police scrutiny and probably won’t produce much good evidence.

“There’s a reason that we pay profession-als to work in police departments,” said Nate Cardozo, a civil liberties attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation. “And there’s a reason we don’t crowdsource photo lineups and the like — crowds aren’t good at it.”

Edson says he took note during the after-math of the Boston attacks last year when authorities were inundated with videos and photos from people at the scene of the blasts. He figured a new tool could help streamline digital evidence-gathering. “It seemed like the perfect opportunity to go to the private sector,” he said.

lance web designers and startup entrepreneurs rent space, meet and collaborate.

Much has changed in just a short time. The nonprofit John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is help-ing spearhead efforts draw the tech industry to Miami, committing $6 million in the last 18 month to an array of projects.

“In Miami there are enormous disconnects,” Knight Foundation Pro-gram Director Matt Haggman said. “If you are an entrepreneur and you want to connect with an investor, where do you go? To date it’s been you’re really on your own.”

On a recent evening inside the mural splashed former warehouse that now houses Lab Miami, more than 100 young professionals, tech geeks and artists roamed between a 3D printer demo on one side and a bilingual review of the latest fashion industry apps on the other. Nearby, civic minded coders huddled, tap-ping out ways to improve city services.

Meanwhile, across Miami’s Bis-cayne Bay, the Venezuelan founder of the tech-based English-language school OpenEnglish, feted the re-

gion’s top 100 tech movers and at his poolside South Beach condo. Last week, Microsoft announced the opening of its first U.S.-based tech-nology innovation center at the new downtown entrepreneurial training center and startup Venture Hive.

“We look at Miami as a great hub

for technology from the Southern U.S. perspective,” said a Microsoft vice president Sanket Akerkar. “It’s a great destination in and of itself, and then you add that it’s a gateway to Latin America.”

so it draws foreigners to study the coastal environmental conservation, precisely at Batu Ampar, Pejarakan in Gerokgak. This beach is visited

by two foreign vessels having been conducting a research since last month and will end in July 2014.

As observation of Bali Post, Sun-

day (May 4), the arrival of foreign vessels attracted the enthusiasm of people residing around the coast. Moreover, the tourism awareness group (Pokmasta) together with other fishermen seemed excited when the group of foreign vessel crews gave them a lesson on the importance of maintaining marine conservation in the region.

Chairman of the tourism aware-ness group, Putu Suastika, as the initiator and operator of the Batu Ampar Beach, said that foreign vessels from Panama anchored in the midst of the sea of Batu Ampar and did a mission on na-ture conservation research. Even, about 20 people consisting of local and foreign environmental researchers were in the vessels. A total of 20 researchers were work-ing in the field of environmental conservation.

Suastika explained, that based on his talk to the researchers pos-ing the members of the NGO MIR, they were working closely with fishermen in various regions of the world, in the field of environmental conservation. They made their time to anchor and provide training and share knowledge to every local fish-erman and local community on how to protect and preserve marine biota

and their species that had not been widely studied at Batu Ampar.

“Some studies will be conducted with the cooperation with village authority. They will provide knowl-edge about the marine environment and lessons at every school and community groups at Pejarakan village,” said Putu Suastika.

The research by foreign ves-sel would be conducted through July 2014. For the purpose, the researchers were still working and doing marine research with other local researchers. Target of the next research would be con-tinued to Sri Lanka. One of the researchers named Abigail Alling expressed his love to the sea in Buleleng. He claimed the poten-tial beach and sea in Buleleng had not been widely touched and developed. Even, the marine biota was very potential for research and conservation.

“This area is very unusual, and only few people know the poten-tial at Batu Ampar. In addition, people have less understanding and knowledge on how to maintain marine conservation. We do the research so that people come back to protecting the environment, including the garbage under the sea,” he said. (kmb34)

LAGOS, Nigeria — Nigeria’s Islamic extremist leader is threatening to sell the nearly 300 teenage schoolgirls abducted from a school in the remote northeast three weeks ago, in a new videotape received Monday.

Abubakar Shekau for the first time also claimed responsibility for the April 15 mass abduction, warning that his group plans to attack more schools and abduct more girls.

“I abducted your girls,” said the leader of Boko Haram, which means “Western educa-tion is sinful.”

He described the girls as “slaves” and said, “By Allah, I will sell them in the mar-ketplace.” The hourlong video starts with fighters lifting automatic rifles and shooting in the air as they chant “Allahu akbar!” or “God is great.”

It was unclear if the video was made before or after reports emerged last week that some of the girls have been forced to marry their abductors — who paid a nominal bride price of $12 — and that others have been carried into neighboring Cameroon and Chad. Those reports could not be verified.

In the video, Shekau also said the students

“will remain slaves with us.” That appears a reference to the ancient jihadi custom of en-slaving women captured in a holy war, who then can be used for sex.

“They are slaves and I will sell them because I have the market to sell them,” he said, speaking in the Hausa language of northern Nigeria. The video was reviewed by The Associated Press, and both the face and the voice of the leader of Boko Haram were recognizable.

Shekau brushed off warnings that the abductions could be an international crime, saying in English, as if to reach his accusers in the international community: “What do you know about human rights? You’re just claiming human rights (abuses), but you don’t know what it is.”

An intermediary who has said Boko Haram is ready to negotiate ransoms for the girls also said two of the girls have died of snake-bite and about 20 are ill. He said Christians among the girls have been forced to convert to Islam. The man, an Islamic scholar, spoke on condition of anonymity because his posi-tion is sensitive.

Nigeria’s police have said more than 300 girls were abducted. Of that number, 276 remain in captivity and 53 escaped.

A group of anti-government sena-tors, who lodged the case, say the transfer was to benefit Yingluck’s rul-ing party and violated the constitution. “I would like to deny all allegations I am accused of,” Yingluck said calmly, seated beside her legal team. “As the prime minister, I am entitled to carry out responsibilities I have toward the people ... and for the utmost benefit of the general public.”

Judge Charoon Intachan said after her testimony that the court would rule Wednesday. Members of her Cabinet who were in office at the time of the transfer could also be found liable.

Yingluck’s testimony at the Consti-tutional Court marked the latest twist in Thailand’s ongoing political crisis. Supporters accuse the courts of trying to topple Yingluck through unfair use of the legal system after six months of anti-government protests failed to unseat her. Her supporters say the courts are biased against her and her political allies.

In February, another court ruled

that the official, Thawil Pliensri, must be restored to his job. That ruling by the Administrative Court found that while it was within Yingluck’s right to reshuffle civil servants, she had failed to address the reasons for the transfer. If Yingluck is found guilty of interfering in state affairs for her personal benefit or that of her political party, she would have to step down as prime minister.

Thailand has been gripped by po-litical conflict since 2006, when then-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, Yingluck’s billionaire brother, was ousted in a military coup after being accused of corruption and abuse of power. Thaksin’s supporters and oppo-nents have each taken to the streets for extended periods in a power struggle that is currently focused on removing Yingluck, who took office in 2011. Opponents say she is a proxy for her brother, who is living overseas in self-imposed exile. More than 20 people have been killed in protest-related violence since November.

BANGKOK — A Thai court will issue a ruling Wednesday that could remove Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra from office, raising the pos-sibility that the legal system could accomplish what protesters have been trying to do for six months through street demonstrations. Yingluck defended herself Tuesday against abuse of power allegations in a key case that is one of several legal challenges that could force her from her job. She is accused of abusing her authority by transferring her National Security Council chief in 2011 to another position.

DENPASAR - Neighboring countries have al-ready been making preparations for decades to deal with the AEC 2015. The Philippines, for instance, have been educating entrepreneurs, with plans of sending them to Indonesia, said academician, Gede Suriadnyana.

Suriadnyana asserted that apart from the Phil-ippines, other countries such as Malaysia and Singapore had been very prepared for the ASEAN free trade. They created and trained nurses, entre-preneurs and other labor in order to be more skilled and professional.

“In terms of Indonesia’s large population, foreign entrepreneurs will certainly be lucky. Many of their products will get absorbed by our society, especially when the price is cheaperthan what is offered locally. Compared to our own entrepreneurs, who are sell-ing, for example, to Malaysia which has smaller population,” he said.

What about Indonesian? According a man from Tabanan, Indonesian workers were given the same rights. However, we did not know to what extent our entrepreneurs could compete. “Therefore, the gov-ernment is intensively implementing competency test in all sectors. Unfortunately, we are starting late compared to the others. The time remaining is too short so the results will likely be dissapointing. Those countries have been making preparations since the MoU of the AEC was signed, so they are very well prepared,” said Suriadnyana.

Meanwhile, Director of PT Persada Global Real Estate, John Sahadewa, revealed that nationally In-donesia is not ready to face the AEC, but he hopes the local entrepreneurs will not be pessimistic with the entry of foreign products into Indonesia and that the government will be able to set up good rules which will be supervised.

“We have exported a lot of products, such as instant noodles to 140 countries, but, we need to fortify our market and to produce superior and in-novative products,” he said.

The entry of foreign workers to Indonesia, ac-cording to John, could not be prevented because it had been agreed upon by the New Order govern-ment. Therefore, people should be aware by par-ticipating in improving self-competence through education and training. “If it’s necessary, we can make labor exchanges with foreign countries with the sponsorhip of the ministry,” he said. According to the indictment of prosecutor Ketut Sujaya before the judge led by Anak Agung Anom Wirakanta, which was stated on Sunday, February 9, 2014 about 01:00 a.m., at the International Arrival Terminal of the Ngurah Rai Airport, the defendant attempted to put crys-tal meth into his suitcase. He

traveled to Bali on Hong Kong Airline flight number HX 6705 destination Denpasar. However, upon entering the airport, a cus-toms officer was suspicious of the suitcase being carried by the defendant. Thus, it was then examined by X-ray and ion scan-ner. “The defendants suitcase was alleged to contain contrabands,”

said the prosecutor Sujaya.Armed with the finding, the

officers then drove the defendant born on November 11, 1965 into the examination room. As a result of the search, in the cavity of his suitcase was found black plastic containing clear crystal. Having been weighed, it reached up to 1,536 grams gross or 1,491 grams net. Following up the finding, the customs officer con-tacted the officers of the Directorate of Narcotics of Bali Police in order to develop the case.

When being examined, said the prosecutor, the defendant

claimed that he first knew Martin Odi from Nigeria. On Friday (Feb 7), before the defendant flew from Johannesburg, South Africa, Martin Odi put the defendant’s clothes into the suitcase. There was also cash worth USD 30,000 planned to be given to his friend in Jakarta. At that time, said the prosecutor, the defendant asked why he did not bring the money in person. Odi Martin replied that if the cash was brought directly it should be declared and proved from where it came from. In return for bringing the cash, the

defendant was given a ticket, and upon arrival in Jakarta would be given a total of USD 500 by his friend in Jakarta.

Unfortunately, such deadly action was revealed by the of-ficers so the carrier had to deal with Indonesian law. In this case the defendant was charged under Article 113, paragraph 2 of Law No. 35/2009 as the first indictment and article 112 under the same law as the second indictment. In terms of the article charged, the maximal sentence was penalty of death. (nik)

PARIS - The French government on Monday rejected a bid by US industrial giant General Electric for Alstom’s energy business, calling for a “balanced partnership” that could include a rail deal.

“In its current form, we can unfortunately not agree to the propositions you have made, resting only on the acquisition of Alstom’s activities in the energy sector,” Economy Minister Arnaud Mon-tebourg said in a letter to GE chief Jeff Immelt.

The US behemoth has been vy-ing for Alstom’s energy assets with German giant Siemens in a politi-cally sensitive bidding war over the French engineering group.

Montebourg was charged by French President Francois Hollande with responding to GE’s 12.4 billion

euro ($17 billion) bid for the energy assets of the company, which em-ploys 18,000 staff in the country.

The firebrand minister has vowed to “defend the industrial interests of the nation” in the deal.

In the letter seen by AFP, Mon-tebourg told Immelt the French government “wishes to examine the ways and means of a balanced part-nership, rejecting a pure and simple acquisition that would lead to the demise of Alstom.”

He said the French government was concerned about “the separation and isolation of the branch of Alstom specialised in rail transport” if GE only buys the energy arm.

Energy activities -- which include power generation and transmission -- account for about 70 percent of Al-stom’s business but the company is better known as a railway equipment maker that manufactures France’s

prized TGV high-speed trains.Montebourg suggested that Gen-

eral Electric in turn hand over its ac-tivities in the rail sector to Alstom.

“It would be highly desirable to insure a global future for Al-stom Transport, by ceding Gen-eral Electric’s transport activities to this entity, including freight trains and signals, representing revenues of $3.9 billion,” the minister said.

Reacting to Montebourg’s letter, General Electric defended its bid for Alstom’s energy assets.

“We appreciate the engagement of the French government. We be-lieve our proposal is good for France, for Alstom and for GE. As our letter to President Hollande stressed, we are open to continuing dialogue,” said the company.

Shares in GE, a Dow component, closed at $26.58, down 0.4 percent.

The Bank of Japan ended a policy meeting Wednesday by saying it will maintain its current pace of asset purchases. That was expected, since the BOJ needs time to monitor the impact of the 3 percentage point increase in the sales tax, to 8 percent, that took effect April 1.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s formula of strong government spending and lax monetary policy helped the world’s third-largest economy emerge from a long deflationary slump last year.

But pressure for more action is building, with even the International Monetary Fund urging the government to press ahead with long-promised reforms to sustain growth.

In a report issued Monday, the IMF said the effects of Abe’s program of inflationary stimulus appeared to be waning.

“A successful transition to self-sustained, deflation-free growth re-mains uncertain,” it said, warning that slower growth for Japan would hurt regional economies with close links such as South Korea, Thailand and Indonesia. Abe has promised to introduce the specifics of his growth strategy by June.

“The next three to six months are absolutely critical. It’s time to deliver,” Gerald Curtis, a Japan expert at Columbia University, said after Abe told a recent conference organized by the Economist magazine that Japan was capable of “dramatic change.”

Abe has promised tax cuts and other measures to encourage more cor-porate investment, but has not yet spelled out the specifics of his reform program.

In a half-year outlook issued Wednesday, the BOJ said its monetary easing is working and will continue as long as necessary to ensure its “price stability target” of 2 percent inflation.

But it acknowledged a wide range of uncertainties, including slower-than-expected growth in exports.

Abe has proposed a slew of potential reforms, including an easing of labor regulations to allow more unpaid overtime, an expansion of temporary hiring of foreign workers and an increase in job opportunities for women.

Japan’s participation in the 12-nation, U.S.-led Trans-Pacific Partner-ship trade talks is seen as one way to force changes in some industries such as agriculture and health services, dominated by politically powerful vested interests.

It is unclear just how quickly any such changes might materialize. Marathon negotiations with U.S. trade officials last week failed to yield a hoped-for “basic agreement” on slashing tariffs and other barriers for U.S. farm products.

Bali PostNEGARA - The identity card checkpoint

at Gilimanuk always reaps criticism and has been blamed as the culprit of every migrant that could escape without bringing along an identity card. Such allegation is often ad-dressed not only based on the weakness of examination, but also based on the issues if the officers received bribes.

However, it must also be seen that security effort made by the officer has limitations. The entire examination of population in Bali is delegated to the checkpoint.

Unfortunately, the attention to the officers as the spearhead of examination was still minimal. Less decent wage for the workload at dusty border region has kindled the indi-viduals to be easily lured by temptations of-fered by incoming migrants. The lures include kickbacks to the service of café girls getting problem to go into Bali.

All the limitations of facilities and wage ranging from IDR 35,000 per day until the less representative building can still be ac-ceptable to the officers. Assistance of the Bali Province which should be more concerned to control the incoming migrants each year is very limited.

Even last year (2013), a proposal to increase the budget for special financial as-sistance (BKK) to the province was rejected due to the implementation of many demo-cratic events such as gubernatorial election, legislative election and presidential election.

The Head of Jembrana Population and

Civil Registry Office, Putu Cahyadi, accom-panied by the Division Head of Population I Gede Jos Hermanus justified such conditions. However, Jembrana County chose to succumb for the population by increasing the budget. “Previously, the wage of workers was IDR 35,000 and then increased to IDR 40,000 per day. Actually we want to make it equivalent to the wage at Padang Bai namely IDR 50,000 but we cannot afford it,” he said.

A team in charge comprised 18 people including 4 civil servants of Population and Civil Registry, municipal police (6) as well as other elements such as the military region command, military district command, military police detachment, community protection, early detection, marine police, logistics and transportation unit and transportation agency respectively one personnel. However, there was still a possibility for migrants to escape, but were not passing through the identity card checkpoint.

He said there were some people who were allowed to continue their journey if they were only making a visit and having a local guarantor. In addition, the residents from NTT and NTB who were just crossing but unable to present identity card were also allowed to continue to Padang Bai. Another issue to consider was the cost of repatriation of the offenders using a vessel.

The supporting facilities available in the office were only stationery, flashlights and rain coat required any time. While a set of computer and other electronic equipment

could not be used, including the CCTV installed at some points had been out of order. All this time, the officers could only check manually for both pedestrians and vehicle passengers. The remaining fund allocated in the regional budget was to complement the special financial assistance for the provision of safety tools of the of-ficers such as uniform, hat, mask as well as raincoat needed in the field. The traffic flow of vehicles and people lasted for 24 hours at Gilimanuk. Even, the vessels anchored and unloaded their freight every 15 minutes. In other words, the officers made a check all the time. “It’s s very different from Padang Bai, the workloads of the officers at Gilimanuk are heavier, but the wage at Padang Bali is higher,” said Jos Hermanus.

Current density of incoming people and vehicles can be seen from the data of migrants processed in the identity card checkpoint. In the year 2013, a total of 2,459 migrants came in without identity cards or their identity card expired. In details, 953 people came with expired identity card and 1,506 people came with-out identity card. The migrant repatriated amounted to 1,257 people and the other 1,202 people were allowed to resume their journey as having a guarantor or the NTT / NTB residents who were just passing through. With such enormous burden, they apparently need to get a particular concern because they are the officers participating in taking care for Bali. (olo)

“Although the quarter to quarter growth declines, when it’s compared to the previ-ous year the Bali’s economy still shows a positive growth. It was driven by the growth in household consumption, government consumption and exports,” said the Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali, Panusunan Siregar, in Denpasar, Monday (May 5).

He said that some sectors experienced negative growth in the first quarter of 2014. Some of them were the agricultural sector with respective negative growth of 2.84 percent, quarrying sector (5.73 percent), electricity, gas and water (0.58 percent) and the services sector (1.93 percent). “In addi-tion to these sectors, the others continue to grow even though experiencing slowdown in the first quarter of this year,” he said.

According to him, the contraction in the agricultural sector happened due to decline in the value added of the food crops and plantation subsector, respectively by 7.35 percent and 2.84 percent. The decrease in the value-added of food crop subsector was heavily influenced by the decline in the value of rice production reaching 26.77 percent.

“If the same period is compared to the first quarter of the previous year, it can be seen if the Bali’s economy grows by 5.43 percent, slower than the growth in first quarter in 2013 reaching 6.71 percent,” he said.

Interestingly, in terms of absolute value, the development of Bali’s GDP based on the valid prices tended to rise, but according to constant prices, it tended to decline. He said that based on the current prices (in nominal terms) in the first quarter of 2013 the GDP of Bali was IDR 24.60 trillion. After that, the figures of Bali’s GDP increased to IDR 25.02 trillion in the first quarter of 2014. Nominal economic growth was not followed by an increase in the real economy or based on constant prices where the value of the real Bali’s GDP actually declined from IDR 8.92 trillion in the fourth quarter of 2013 to IDR 8.89 trillion in the first quarter of 2014.

“In the first quarter of 2014, the structure of GDP in accordance with business field, the economy of Bali is supported by two dominant economic sectors, namely the trade, hotel and tourism (PHR) sector and the agricultural sector, respectively contrib-uted to 30.21 percent and 16.44 percent,” he said. DENPASAR - The economy of Bali in first quarter of 2014 showed a negative growth compared to the fourth quarter of the previous year, indicating 0.39 percent. How-ever, compared to the same quarter a year earlier, the Bali’s economy is recorded to show a growth of 5.43 percent, although it is slower than the growth in the first quarter of 2013, reaching 6.71 percent.

Gunbattles took place at vari-ous positions around the city Monday in what has proven the most ambitious government ef-fort to date to quell unrest in the mainly Russian-speaking east.

Avakov said Monday that pro-Russia forces in Slovyansk, a city of 125,000, were deploying large-caliber weapons and mortars in the region and there were injured on both sides. Government troops were facing about 800 insurgents, he said. In Donetsk, a major city some 120 kilometers south of Slovyansk, international flights from the local airport were sus-pended Tuesday. The airport said on its website that the cancel-lations followed a government order.

Ukraine is facing its worst crisis in decades as the polarized nation of 46 million tries to decide

whether to look toward Europe, as its western regions want to do, or improve ties with Russia, which is favored by the many Russian-speakers in the east. Dozens of government offices have been seized, either by armed insurgents or anti-government crowds, over the past several weeks.

The central government at-tempted to re-establish control Tuesday over the predominantly Russian-speaking Black Sea re-gion of Odessa, where 46 people died after fighting and a fire broke out between pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian forces late on Friday.

In a statement published on the president’s website, the Kiev authorities announced they were firing the acting governor and replacing him with member of parliament Ihor Palytsya. On Saturday, the police chief of the

city was fired, mere hours after he had called for calm.

While no reasons were given for the latest change, the interim Kiev government has previously wielded its authority to appoint regional governors as a way of reasserting control over rebellious regions in the country’s east. The concern that Odessa could be the next region to fall to pro-Russian forces — particularly after 67 people detained in the Friday fighting were released by the po-lice under pressure from an angry crowd — has sparked concern in Kiev, which said it was sending an elite national guard force to the city on Monday.

The goals of the pro-Russian insurgency are ostensibly broader powers of autonomy for the re-gion, but some insurgents do favor separatism.

PRETORIA, South Africa — A man who lives next to the house where Oscar Pistorius fatally shot his girlfriend testified Tuesday at the athlete’s murder trial about the night of the killing, saying he heard a man crying loudly and that he called the security of the housing estate for help. Michael Nh-lengethwa was a witness summoned by the Olympian’s defense team, which contends that Pistorius killed Reeva Steenkamp by mistake after believing there was an intruder in his home on Feb. 14, 2013. The prosecution says Pistorius intentionally killed Steenkamp after the couple had an argument.

The disabled runner shot four times through a toilet cubicle door with his 9 mm pistol, hitting Steenkamp in the hip, arm and head. Security checks at the courthouse where Pistorius is on trial were disrupted early Tuesday because of what police said was a protest over work conditions by security staff, who left their posts and gathered outside the building. Some people entered the courthouse without having their bags checked, and Pistorius was heard asking whether a security check had been conducted as he entered the courtroom.

Nhlengethwa, who was Pistorius’ next-door neighbor, testified that his wife woke him up after hearing a bang and that he did not hear gunshots. He said he then heard a man crying in a high-pitched voice that indicated he urgently needed help. Nhlengethwa could not make out most of what the man was saying, though he heard the words: “No, please, please, no.”

The neighbor’s bedroom window was around 25 meters (80 feet) from the balcony doors of Pistorius’ bedroom, closer than neighbors called by prosecutors and who said they heard a woman screaming on the night of the shooting. The defense was trying to present Nhlengethwa as a more reliable witness on the events of the night because of how much closer he lived to Pistorius’ villa. A neighbor who testified to hearing a woman’s “blood-curdling” screams on the night lived around 170 meters (560 feet) from Pistorius’ house.

Nhlengethwa testified that he called estate security to ask them to come to their road. During the testimony, Pistorius sat on a wooden bench in the courtroom, looking impassively at the witness.

JAKARTA - The Indonesian navy has found 19 boatpeople who say they were turned around trying to reach Australia in the latest tow-back of an asylum-seeker vessel under Canberra’s hardline policies.

The news came just days after Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott abruptly cancelled a visit to Indonesia that had been viewed as a bid to thaw ties damaged by Canberra’s border protection policies and a row over spying.

Reports at the time said he axed the trip to the resort island of Bali, where he had been due to meet Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, over fears an ongoing turn-back operation could inflame tensions.

The Indonesian navy said that it had found a boat with would-be refugees stranded on Lay island in East Nusa Tenggara province, in eastern Indonesia, early Sunday.

All the passengers were male, with 15 from In-dia, two from Nepal and two from Albania, said a statement from the navy released late Monday.

The navy said that based on testimony from the crew, the boat started sailing from central Sulawesi island on April 26 and managed to enter Australian territorial waters on Thursday.

“At midnight (on Thursday), the boat was

checked by two Australian warships... the boat was later escorted towards Indonesian waters,” the navy said.

Abbott’s office has declined to go into the reasons for putting off the visit to Indonesia.

It would have been his first since damaging revelations in November that Australian spies at-tempted in 2009 to tap the phone of Yudhoyono, his wife and inner circle.

Jakarta reacted furiously to the news, recalling its ambassador and halting cooperation in key areas including defence and people-smuggling. Tensions were further inflamed by Canberra’s military-led crackdown on asylum-seekers making their way to Australia by boat from Indonesia.

The crackdown, named “Operation Sovereign Borders”, involves Australian vessels turning back asylum-seeker boats to Indonesia when it is safe to do so.

There have also been reports that Canberra has purchased orange lifeboats to send back asylum-seekers if their own vessels are deemed unseaworthy.

In February two boatloads of asylum-seekers washed up in southern Indonesia in orange life-boats, saying they had been transferred to the vessels by Australian authorities before being turned around.

“President Yudhoyono and Ibas Yudhoyono were asked to be witnesses under the request made by Anas Urbaningrum. We had sent the letter of request on April 28,” Johan said.

President Yudhoyono and Ibas Yudhoyono are the chief patron and secretary general of the Democrat Party, respectively, while Anas was the former chairman of the party before retiring in February 2013 to focus on his legal case.

“I made the request to call President Yud-hoyono and Ibas Yudhoyono because both, whom I think are the most suitable witnesses to be questioned, had not yet been called by the KPK,” Anas said.

Meanwhile, the lawyer of the Yudhoyono family, Palmer Situmorang, said the letter sent by the KPK was not a summon letter but a letter requesting President Yudhoyono and Ibas Yudhoyono to be witnesses for Anas

Urbaningrum. Anas Urbaningrum was named as a suspect

on charges of violating several articles of corruption laws for accepting bribes or gifts, which carry a sentence of four to 20 years and a fine of Rp200 million to Rp one billion.

In July 2013, KPK Chief Abraham Samad remarked that the other projects, apart from Hambalang in which Anas was implicated, were a solar power plant project of the Min-istry of Manpower and a university project of the Ministry of Education.

He added that the KPK was investigating Anas alleged involvement in the two projects. In addition to that, he noted that the KPK was also probing the alleged flow of funds from state-owned companies for supporting Anas in winning the party’s leadership in a congress in Bandung in 2010. Anas has been detained by the KPK since early January 2014 until now.

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s first female provincial leader went on trial Tuesday, accused of bribing one of the country’s top judges over an election dispute in an attempt to strengthen her political dynasty.

The case of Ratu Atut Chosiyah, governor of Banten province, has transfixed even graft-weary Indo-nesia since her arrest last year for allegedly bribing the constitutional court’s chief justice Akil Mochtar, who has also been detained.

Her family dominates wealthy Banten on the main island of Java, controlling five of its eight districts. It is one of several local political dy-nasties that have flourished since the 1998 downfall of dictator Suharto.

The 51-year-old is accused, along with her brother Tubagus Chaeri Wardana, of giving one billion rupiah ($87,000) to Mochtar to annul a local election result in Banten that went against one of her close associates, an anti-corruption court in the capital

Jakarta was told. She faces up to 15 years in jail if

found guilty.Prosecutor Edy Hartoyo told the

court that Chosiyah and her brother gave the judge money “in order to interfere with a court ruling he was handling”. Her brother is being tried separately.

The defendant asked the judge to annul the result during a 2013 meet-ing in Singapore, he said. One of the constitutional court’s roles is ruling on election disputes.

Despite the scandal, the gover-nor’s family remain powerful in Banten. Two of her children were reportedly elected as local lawmakers in polls last month.

Mochtar was arrested last October and has been charged with rigging 11 elections.

NGO Transparency International ranked Indonesia 114th out of 177 countries and territories in its annual corruption perceptions index last year. A number one ranking means the least corrupt.

Indonesia’s first female provincial leader, Ratu Atut Chosiyah, went on trial Tuesday, accused of bribing one of the country’s top judges over an election dispute in an attempt to strengthen her political dynasty.

Atut on trial in bribery caseThat is why Indonesia’s chairmanship of the OGP this year gives a

particular emphasis on public participation. In that light, let me share some thoughts on ways to promote greater civic engagement in an open and transparent government.

President also stated that Indonesia continues to put meaning to the ideals of open government. He offered three initiatives, first in the field of fiscal and data transparency, second in the field of public services, and third in the field of citizens voices.

Meanwhile, according to Head of President’s Delivery Unit of Indonesia, Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, as the current Lead Chair of OGP, Indonesia sees a tremendous opportunity for growth of openness in Asia Pacific. Asia Pacific is the region where good governance is both domestically demanded and increasingly important to build a more inclusive architecture of regional cooperation.

Asia Pacific is also projected to be the world’s primary sources of global economic growth in the next two and three decades. The region is burgeoning with population, technology, trade, and resources – where inevitably many emerging markets reside and investors worldwide compete to invest.

Yet, with exponential growth, Asia Pacific is also riddled with poverty, corruption, inequality, public unrest, and increasing violent as well as non-violent political mobilization. The earned economic growth in Asia Pacific is taxed with problems that have consequences in society, politics, and security. These are the consequences that will grip the governments’ attention to look for solution to the roots of those problems.

These days, he said that growing demands for public participation hap-pen in Thailand, India, and Malaysia, where people are mobilizing to have better oversight over elections and their governments. Increasing push for social and political accountability also happen in Pakistan, Indonesia, the Philippines, and even in China. “We witness the increasing political will to open up and democratize in Myanmar, where civil society and media are gaining new freedom. And at the same time, we see the increasing trends for e-governments in South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand, where informa-tion technology is helping reduce corruptions and improve public services. These phenomena not only show the Asia Pacific dynamics, but also imply the imperative of openness in the region,” he said. (kmb18)

MADRID — Second-ranked Li Na started her Madrid Open campaign by overcoming a stubborn opponent just as third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska did to reach the second round on Monday. Li’s clay debut began with an encouraging 6-1, 7-6 (7) victory over Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens before Radwanska also advanced thanks to a 7-6 (3), 6-2 win over Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard.

Li, the Australian Open champion, survived two set points by Flipkens, and eventually took the tiebreaker to avoid another surprise first-round exit like last year. Li goes up against fellow Chinese player Zheng Jie next. Bouchard came out on the losing end of a tough match against third-ranked Radwanska, as the Polish player earned her 25th match win of the season.

“The tiebreak was the biggest key,” said Radwanska, who goes on to play Svetlana Kuznetsova. “I did a couple of good shots in the tiebreak and managed to win that, and that gave me more confidence in the second set.” Kuznetsova held off Alize Cornet of France 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 as the Russian contin-ued her good run, including reaching the

final in Portugal on Saturday. Also, Caroline Wozniacki was a 6-2, 6-2

victor over Ekaterina Makarova while Span-ish player Carla Suarez Navarro followed up from winning her first career title in Portugal with a 7-6 (6), 6-4 win over Yvonne Meus-burger of Austria. Ninth-seeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia was bounced 6-4, 6-0 by Samantha Stosur of Australia.

A minute’s silence was scheduled to be held at the Magic Box’s Manolo Santana center court before the evening match in remembrance of Elena Baltacha, a former top-50 British women’s player who died of liver cancer on Sunday. In men’s first-round play, ninth-seeded John Isner beat Russian qualifier Teymuraz Gabashvili 7-6 (8), 6-4, with the American securing the only break in a match heavy on baseline groundstrokes. Kei Nishikori followed up his Barcelona Open triumph with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Ivan Dodig of Croatia.

Nishikori said working with former French Open champion Michael Chang boosted his confidence on this surface as he won his first career clay title in Barcelona.

“I did well last week in Barcelona and I’m getting better on clay, so hopefully I can go further this week,” the 12th-ranked Japanese player said. “There was just one

bad game, on my serve at 3-2 in the second set. Otherwise, it was an almost perfect match.”

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Edouard Roger-

Vasselin 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, while Gilles Simon emerged from another all-French matchup, after Benoit Paire retired, to play Roger Federer next.

Paul, who had never made more than five 3-pointers in a game, had 10 assists. “When somebody’s got it go-ing like that, you just try to stay out of the way as much as possible, but also help keep that fire going,” Clippers forward Blake Griffin said.

Blake Griffin scored 23 points, Ja-mal Crawford had 17 and J.J. Redick added 12 for the Clippers, who shot 55 percent from the field and made 15 of 29 3-point attempts.

Russell Westbrook scored 29 points, Kevin Durant had 25 and Serge Ibaka added 12 for the Thunder, who suf-fered their worst home loss since

moving to Oklahoma City. “We have to get more physical,” Durant said. “I’m not talking about hard fouls, I’m talking about jamming the lane, fighting through screens and not let-ting guys run free. We just have to be more physical.”

The Clippers scored 23 points off Oklahoma City’s 18 turnovers. Game 2 is Wednesday night in Oklahoma City. The Wizards won a second-round game for the first time since 1982 and are 4-0 on the road in this year’s playoffs. They ended a 12-game losing streak at Indiana that dated to April 18, 2007, and they did it by nearly leading from wire-to-wire.

Paul George and George Hill had 18 points each for Indiana. The Wizards trailed only once, 31-30, and took control with a 17-6 run to close the first half that made it 56-43. Indiana couldn’t get closer than five points in the second half. Game 2 is Wednesday night at Indiana.

MANGUPURA - Nungnung waterfalls have increased in popularity for French and German visitors to Bali. The waterfalls are located near the village of Plaga in the area of Petang, North-ern Badung, The way down to the source of the water is about 50 meters and used to be very difficult and steep. But now it can be easily reached through hundreds of concrete stairs. The idea to build these stairs was initiated by the people who live in the neighborhood in cooperation with the government. It takes about 60 minutes (40 km) from Denpasar to get to the location of the waterfalls by bus. Walking up and down the stairs is not as tiring as it sounds, thanks to the cool air in the mountain which makes the body fresh, as does the surrounding panorama.

Juventus, which has won all 18 of its home matches, has 96 points, and it visits Roma on Sun-day before ending the campaign at home to Cagliari. The only worry for Juventus fans will be coach Antonio Conte hinting at a possible departure at the end of the season.

“I will speak with the club and we will make the right as-sessments,” Conte said. “It has been three intense years, I have to thank the lads for what they have done. Even tonight they went out there with the desire to win. That mentality, which I have transmitted to the lads, is

my greatest merit. “It’s not easy to improve on what we have done these past few years. I have to understand if I have the strength to continue ...”

Chances were few and far between before Padoin scored in the 72nd minute. The mid-fielder, who spent five years at Atalanta, drilled in a low shot off the inside of the left post after Carlos Tevez flicked on Paul Pogba’s pass.

Tevez should have scored his 20th goal of the season with the last kick of the game but the Ar-gentina striker fired wide of an empty net after being unselfishly

set up by Fabio Quagliarella. It mattered little, and the final whistle blew moments later to spark joyful scenes of celebra-tion on the pitch and back in the dressing room.

“We have been celebrating for more than 24 hours,” Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci said. “But we arrived on the pitch with the right attitude and continued our incredible run. Making Juve history isn’t easy and the way we’ve done it is even harder. Juve hasn’t won three successive league titles since the ‘30s, it was right to celebrate, and we’re re-ally enjoying the moment.”

LONDON — Liverpool regained the lead in the English Premier League but the crown slipped further from its grasp as it threw away a three-goal lead in a 3-3 draw away to Crystal Palace on Monday. The stunning outcome put Liverpool a point above Manchester City, but City has a game in hand and can win its second title in three years with four points from its last two games.

When asked if the title race was now over, Liverpool coach Brendan Rodgers said, “Yes, it probably is,” and rued the irony of his team’s leading league position but fading title hopes.

“We’re going top with 81 points with a week to go in the season and we’re sat here devastated,” he said, insisting Liverpool’s title challenge was not a one-season flash in the pan. “I’m here to fight, to win titles, and I’ll be relentless in my quest,” he added. “We’re trying to build something that’s sustainable.”

Overconfidence sowed the seeds of Liverpool’s downfall against Palace, Rod-gers said, and suggested his team at times was reminiscent of “Roy of the Rovers,” a British football comic strip famed for depicting swashbuckling play.

“We maybe thought we could play ‘Roy of the Rovers’ football and make up the goal difference (to City) but tonight was about winning the game,” he said. “We didn’t manage the game well at 3-0.”

Liverpool was romping to a bonus big win to help its goal difference thanks to a first-half goal by Joe Allen before Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez scored in quick succession in the second to be leading 3-0 by the 55th minute.

Then, Damian Delaney exposed Liver-pool’s vulnerability to counterattacks as he scored in the 79th, launching a dramatic turnaround and deflating the Reds. They didn’t recover, as Dwight Gayle cut the deficit to one two minutes later, and drew level with his second goal in the 88th.

Suarez, the league’s new player of the year, was in tears on the final whistle and covered his face with his shirt as he left the pitch, with his team highly unlikely to claim a first title in 24 years.

The title race is certain to go to the last day of the season on Sunday, and City’s superior goal difference means a win and a draw from its last two games will guarantee the title. City faces Aston Villa on Wednesday, and West Ham United on Sunday, both at home.

Liverpool started strongly and seemed to have put the preceding 2-0 defeat to Chelsea behind it when Allen darted to the far post to head in Steven Gerrard’s corner, his first league goal in over two years.

Leading only 1-0 at the break, Liver-pool came out fighting in the second half, forcing Palace goalkeeper Julian Speroni to tip a Sturridge shot onto the post in acrobatic style, before Suarez missed an open goal on the rebound. Sturridge doubled Liverpool’s lead with a deflected shot on 51 minutes, and Suarez combined with Raheem Sterling to make it 3-0 with a calm low finish two minutes later.

Chasing a big win to reduce City’s goal-difference advantage, Liverpool continued to pour men forward and was repeatedly caught on the counterattack as Palace scored three goals in the space of nine minutes. Delaney’s 25-yard specula-tive shot veered in off Glen Johnson’s leg into the top right corner of the net, then Gayle scored his first, coolly finishing off a Yannick Bolasie cross.

Gayle leveled in the 88th, slotting past goalkeeper Simon Mignolet when Glenn Murray controlled a long pass. “At 3-0 you’re staring down the barrel. When we got the first goal I actually thought we’d have a squeak,” Palace coach Tony Pulis said. “Then the support, everything, took off. It was amazing.”

Palace’s final home game of the season saw the home crowd leave in buoyant mood following a season in which the London team was expected to battle only against relegation in its first season since returning to the Premier League. It has ended up shaping the title race, adding Liverpool’s scalp to that of Chelsea, beaten 1-0 while leading the league in March. Palace can no longer overtake 10th-place Stoke City, and will secure 11th with a point away to relegated Ful-ham on Sunday.

MADRID — Perhaps the Champions League success for Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid was the best thing that could happen to Barcelona — at least as far as the domestic title race is concerned. The Madrid clubs stumbled in the Spanish league on Sunday as they looked sapped of energy following their wins in the Champions League semifinals to set up a city derby in the final.

That has provided Barcelona with renewed hope after the defending champion wrote itself off. Leader Atletico lost 2-0 at Levante, while Madrid needed a stoppage-time goal from Cristiano Ronaldo to draw 2-2 against Valencia at home. That came after Atletico beat Chelsea 3-1 at Stamford Bridge and Madrid routed Bayern 4-0 in Munich in midweek. Chelsea went on to draw 0-0 on Sunday against Norwich to virtually fall out of contention in the Premier League race. “Specifically on the physical front. Atletico and Chelsea had the same problem (as us),” Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said after the team’s draw. “You can’t give your maximum intensity like that and not pay the price for it.” Atletico is still the front-runner as it needs only four points from its final two games — against Malaga at home this Sunday before the trip to Barcelona on May 18. Atletico leads with 88 points and Barcelona is second with 85. Madrid has 83 points but with three games remaining, starting with Wednesday’s match at Real Valladolid that will see the standings set for the last two rounds.

“We can’t forget that we depend on ourselves,” Atletico captain Gabi Fernandez said. “We’re 15 days from tasting glory, so we’ve got to keep fighting.” Atletico holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over Madrid, so even wins for Real at Valladolid, at Celta Vigo, and home to Espanyol wouldn’t be enough unless Atletico drops points.

“I only trust in Madrid and no other team. We have to do our job and see what happens,” Madrid defender Marcelo said. “First off, we have to win our games. We can’t worry about other teams, we need to worry about ourselves, win, and then see.” Ronaldo’s turn-of-his-boot volley to stab in a 92nd-minute cross allowed Madrid to remain in the race.

“Cristiano’s goal was very, very important because if we had lost it would have meant we lost any chance of winning the league,” Ancelotti said. “It was a key play. We’ve got three games left, and on Wednesday we’ll play better.” Barcelona looked to have given up on winning a fifth title in six years after conceding a stoppage-time equalizer to relegation-battling Getafe in a 2-2 draw on Saturday. Now, suddenly, Barcelona remains in the hunt, but needs Madrid to drop points to have a chance to avoid a first season without a major trophy since 2007. If Atletico and Barcelona end up tied on points, Barcelona will hold the head-to-head advantage as that scenario will arrive only with the titleholder beating Atletico on the final day.

“One day someone said this league was boring, and now it’s very fun,” Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone said. “What we have left is a couple of rounds of pure football.”

MANCHESTER — Wayne Rooney will miss Manchester United’s penultimate match of a lackluster English Premier League campaign against Hull on Tuesday while still strug-gling to overcome a groin injury.

Rooney sat out the 1-0 loss to Sunderland on Saturday due to a combination of the injury and a stomach bug.

Interim manager Ryan Giggs said ahead of the Hull match at Old Trafford: “Wayne is probably struggling for the game. He’s not quite recovered.”

The injury will be a concern for England coach Roy Hodg-son, who names his World Cup squad next Monday.

DONETSK, Ukraine — Ukraine’s Interior Minister said Tuesday that 30 pro-Russian in-surgents were killed during operations to expunge anti-government forces in and near a city in the east, while the Kiev authorities attempted to reassert control over the southern region of Odessa by appointing a new governor there. Arsen Avakov said on his Facebook page Tuesday that four government troops also died and 20 were injured during fighting in Slovyansk.

(kmb18)

(kmb27)

DENPASAR - The economy of Bali in first quarter of 2014 showed a negative growth compared to the fourth quarter of the previous year, indicating 0.39 percent. Economic growth in the first quarter was inhibited by the agricultural sector experi-encing a contraction of 2.84 percent. How-ever, compared to the same quarter a year earlier, the Bali’s economy is recorded to show a growth of 5.43 percent, although it is slower than the growth in the first quarter of 2013, reaching 6.71 percent.

(nik)

(kmb34)

(kmb31)

signer L’Wren Scott, committed suicide in March.

The theme of the Conference “Unlocking Innovative Openness: Impetus to Greater Civic Engage-

ment”, according to President, is very timely. “In parallel with the economic achievement throughout

our region, we see the ever in-creased activism among our people in governance,” he added.

He mentioned that the gathering shows the strength and increasing relevance of the Open Government Partnership. He explained OGP began as a multilateral initiative of like-minded countries across the globe. They include Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, Norway, the Philippines, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United

States, and a number of civil society organizations.

After two years, the OGP has transformed itself into a global movement. Now there are sixty-four countries, and around 200 civil society organizations joining the OGP. It is with this encouraging development that Indonesia is proud to co-chair the OGP with Mexico this year. As co-chairs, we are de-termined to strengthen this global movement in line with the continu-

ous dynamism in our region.According to President, open and

transparent government is a source of trust and predictability. They serve as a good basis for a more sustainable cooperation among gov-ernments, including to help resolve regional and global problems more coherently. “In my view, openness and transparency should stimulate their sense of ownership in open government,” he asserted.
