JAKARTA - Indonesia’s trou-bled football federation is once again in strife as a breakaway super league threatens to dis-qualify top Indonesian clubs from regional events.

Rival administrators revived the defunct Liga Super Indonesia,

which kicked off Thursday after disputes between clubs and Liga Prima Indonesia, the country’s official top league registered with the Indonesian Football Associa-tion (PSSI).

“We believe a letter from the sports ministry makes it clear that there is only one recognised professional league under the

PSSI, and that’s the Prima Liga Indonesia,” PSSI competition committee chief Sihar Sitorus told AFP.

“We will be taking action against the Liga Super adminis-trators and we will see if they are kicked out or accommodated.”

Eleven of the 24 original Liga Prima clubs boycotted the compe-

tition, some saying too many clubs were playing, others citing inad-equate salaries and conditions.

The split in the country’s pool of top clubs could hurt Indonesia’s chances of competing in the Asian Champions League and the AFC Cup championships beyond next year.

EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sail-ings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

JAKARTA - The government of Indonesia is taking steps to anticipate the impact of Euro-pean crisis on the national economy, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said.

Speaking at a cabinet plenary meeting at his office on Friday, President Yudhoyono said the situation in Europe should be Indonesia`s concern and part of national economic steps in 2012.

“We continue to keep abreast of develop-ments in the world economy, and on Thursday we discussed at length with German President Christian Wulff about the real situation in the European Union and Eurozone,” President Yudhoyono said.

Yudhoyono said that the German president as well as the leaders of several international monetary institutions had commented on the development of economic condition in Europe.

Therefore the head of state said the 2012 State Budget should be prepared well and implemented properly.

“All along I have warned that the important tool of 2012 State Budget be arranged, allo-cated, and implemented properly because it has something to do with our economy,” the president asserted.

He added that the government should en-sure fiscal discipline to maintain the national economy.

“The government`s expenditure should be managed properly, debt relief should not be left without the propriety because it is in line with the depth to gross domestic product ratio. Besides fiscal discipline, we have to work even harder and do many things for our national economy,” the president said.

He noted that the government should not wait until the crisis hit the national economy.

JAKARTA - Indonesia has lifted a ban on sending domestic workers to Malaysia after both countries agreed on a minimum salary increase and measures to end abuse and torture, an official said Friday.

Jakarta implemented the ban in June 2009 after a spate of workers reported shocking abuse cases at the hands of their Malaysian employers.

“We revoked it Thursday after both countries agreed on a number of deals aimed at improving protection for Indo-nesian workers,” labour ministry director-general for Indonesian workers abroad Reyna Usman told AFP.

Most of Malaysia’s foreign maids are Indonesian women, who often work for as little as 400 ringgit ($130) a month and have no specific laws governing their work

conditions.The two countries signed a memoran-

dum of understanding in May to improve conditions for Indonesian maids, but Ja-karta said it would only officially revoke the ban after a minimum-wage increase was negotiated.

“There will be a significant salary in-crease for the domestic workers. They will now get a minimum wage of 700 ringgit a month,” Usman said, adding that employers will have to pay maids by bank transfer.

“There have been many cases where Malaysian employers simply did not pay their maid’s salary. By using a bank trans-fer, it will be easier to track payments,” she said.

Indonesia will send its first group of workers to Malaysia in early March.

Employers will not be allowed to confis-cate maids’ passports and workers have an

explicit right to communicate with relatives and Indonesian authorities.

Workers are now entitled to one day a week off or receive cash compensation of 28 ringgit.

Hau Yuan Tyng, a 45-year-old Malay-sian woman, is serving 11 years in jail for inflicting horrific wounds on her Indo-nesian maid, Siti Hajar, using a hammer, scissors and scalding water.

Siti, 35, escaped from her employer’s upmarket apartment last year and made her way to the Indonesian embassy. Pictures of her injuries were splashed across newspa-pers in both countries.

Indonesia has also banned sending maids to Saudi Arabia following the beheading of a maid, Ruyati binti Sapubi, in June.

Sapubi, 54, was convicted of killing her Saudi employer, who she said had abused her.

OVERVIEW:

The rich flavor of duck is greatly enhanced by a host

of pungent roots, herbs and seasonings in this dish,

which is invariably a great favorite with visitors to Bali.

The Balinese have great admiration for the duck and

consider it to be a particularly strong animal as it is, like

the turtle, the only one able to survive on land as water.

INGREDIENTS:

1 whole duck, weigh about 2 kg (4 ½ lb)

18 shallots, peeled, cut in half, and sliced

6 cloves garlic, peeled, cut in half, & sliced

3 stalks lemon grass, finely sliced

5 fragrant lime leaves, finely sliced

6 candlenuts, chopped

5 cm (2 in), ginger, peeled and chopped

8 cm (3in) fresh turmeric, peeled, chopped

8 cm (3in) kencur root, peeled, chopped

1 tsp black peppercorns, crushed

5 bird’s-eye chilies, slices

1 tsp coriander seeds, crushed

2 tsp dried shrimp paste, roasted and coarsely

crushed

1½ tbsp salt

3 tbsp oil

Banana leaves, greaseproof paper or aluminum foil

for wrapping

PREPARATION:

Wipe the duck dry and set aside. Combine all

ingredients except banana leafs in a bowl and mix well.

Rub the duck outside with this mixture and fill the center

of the duck with the remainder.

Close open duck with satay skewer. Wrap in several

layers of banana leaves, greaseproof paper or foil and

steam for 50 minutes. Transfer duck to a moderate oven

and bake at 180o C (350o F) for 30 minutes.

Remove banana leaves, cut duck meat up in small

pieces and serve with stuffing. When cooked, the meat

should be so tender that it falls off the bones.

KEDONGANGAN - Kedonganan Customary Village known as a fishing village is also famous as culinary tourism village. There are about 24 cafés offering luscious seafood delicacies that can be encountered along the shoreline of Kedonganan.

Starting in 2007, the Kedonganan Customary Village sup-ported by Badung Regency arranged the area of Kedonganan Beach. The presence of cafés was then set up properly so they could maximize the potential of local residents. Having passed through a long process, it could be established 24 units of café where the physical construction was financed by LPD of Kedonganan Customary Village amounting to IDR 500 million for working capital and inventory. Overall the capital invested for the café business approximately reached IDR 12 billion.

Around twenty four cafés was handed over to six custom-ary hamlets existing at Kedonganan Village. Each hamlet was given the right to manage four units of café. It was a strategy to improve the welfare of Kedonganan society through joint efforts by utilizing the village territory located on the coast.

Furthermore, since then Kedonganan Beach was well known as a culinary tourism village. The menus on offer com-prised the grilled fish, lobster, shrimp, mussels, crab, squid, and supporting menus such as chili-style menus of Kedonganan, water spinach with plecing sauce and some others. Flavor and aroma on offer had its own characteristics that could not be found elsewhere.

Ultimately, the name Kedonganan was then touted in the tourism industry. A number of websites reported about the atmosphere of Kedonganan Beach as an alternative coastal tourist attraction and culinary tourism in Bali.

China, which eclipsed the United States several years ago to head the list, produced 9,441 megatons of CO2 equivalent (CO2e), a measure that combines C02 with other heat-trapping gases such as methane and nitrous oxide. The method of calculation used combines 2009 figures for energy consumption with estimated numbers for 2010.

The majority of the countries’ emissions are carbon dioxide, thanks to massive energy demand. Renew-able energy use is increasing, but remains dwarfed by fossil fuel use.

India produced 2272.45 megatons of CO2e, a significant portion from methane generated by agriculture.

“Although per capita energy use in China and India is relatively low, overall energy demand is very large,” said Maplecroft Analyst, Chris Laws. “When combined with high use of coal and other fossil fuels, this results in large emissions in both countries.”

Brazil’s output of 1,144 mega-tons from energy use would be significantly higher if deforestation were taken into account. Among advanced economies, the United States -- No. 1 among large nations for per capita emissions -- produced 6,539 megatons of CO2e.

Russia, at 1,963 megatons, ranked fourth. Its emissions dropped after the collapse of the Soviet Union, but are expected to rise.

The pandas are to stay for 10 years at Edinburgh Zoo, where officials hope they will breed dur-ing their stay.

The Royal Zoo-logical Society of Scotland will pay more than 600,000 pounds ($935,000) a year to China for the loan of Sweetie and Sunshine, not including the ex-pense of imported bamboo. Britain’s last giant panda lived in London Zoo until 1994, when it was re-turned to China.

SAN FRANCISCO — A father who believes a lack of bone marrow donors contributed to his son’s death from leukemia says a federal court ruling allowing most bone marrow donors to be paid will save lives and drive down treatment costs. The appeals court ruled Thursday that most bone marrow donors can be paid, overturning the government’s interpretation of a decades-old law making

such compensation a crime punishable by up to five years in prison.

In its ruling, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said a technological breakthrough makes donating bone marrow a process nearly identical to giving blood plasma.

It’s legal — and common — to pay plasma donors. Therefore, the court ruled, bone marrow donors undergo-ing the new procedure can be paid as well and are exempt from a law making it a felony to sell human organs for

transplants.The ruling comes after a lawsuit was filed by

lawyers at the nonprofit Institute for Justice. The group represents a coalition of patients, doctors and MoreMarrowDonors.org, which is seeking to offer donors $3,000 in the form of a scholar-ship, housing allowance or gift to charity.

A plaintiff in the lawsuit, Kumud Majumder, said his 11-year-old son, Arya, died of leukemia last April. The family had resorted to an imper-fect bone marrow donor match in desperation because no perfect match was available, the father said at a news conference outside the circuit court’s Pasadena chambers

“Arya’s tragedy happened in part because of a lack of bone marrow donors,” Majumder said. “In the end, creating more and better bone mar-row donor matches through a system of modest compensation will save the lives of patients, improve the lives of donors, drive down the costs of treatment and improve the quality of life of cancer patients as they battle to survive.”

The unanimous, three-judge panel of the court did say it remains a felony to compen-sate donors for undergoing an older transplant method, which extracts the marrow from the donors’ bones.

Speaking in an interview ahead of his maiden appearance at the Race of Champions in his native Germany, the Marussia Virgin Racing driver insisted that he would give his Red Bull rival a run for his money if he was gifted similar machinery.

“I know I’m just as good as Seb,” he told Kolner Express, “If we were both sitting in a Red Bull, only the form of the day would make the difference.”

With the RoC pitting drivers against each other in the same cars, Glock, who competes for Team Germany 2 alongside

double DTM champion Timo Scheider while Vettel partners seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher in the all-conquering first team, admits that he hopes to get the chance to prove his point in Dusseldorf. “I’m very curious to see how the comparison pans out,” he smiled.

Having spent the past two seasons helping establish the Virgin Racing team as a credible F1 entry, many expected Glock to look to move back up the grid for 2012. However, with a dearth of viable alternatives, with the possible exception of joining an already-crowded

waiting room at Lotus Renault, he opted to sign a ‘long-term’ deal with his cur-rent employer, with the view to helping it move away from the back of the grid.

“It’s quite funny,” the 29-year old explained, “I recently sat with an old Toyota mechanic and he asked me how I can stay motivated because we were fighting for the podium and now I’m fighting for 20th place.

“It’s simply this - when I get into the car, I’m always motivated. Even when it’s for the wooden spoon, I just fight until the last metre.

RENAULT team owner Gerard Lopez says questions about Kimi Raikkonen’s motivation in returning to Formula 1 will only make the 2007 world champion more determined to succeed. After two years in the World Rally Championship, Raikkonen is rejoining grand prix racing in 2012 with what will then be called the Lotus team.

The Finn’s motivation level was often called into question during the latter stages of his original F1 career and in his WRC stint, but speaking during Raik-konen’s first visit to the team’s Enstone factory on Friday, Lopez said he was con-fident this was not an issue anymore.

“Kimi has proven in the past that he is among the fastest and in terms of age he’s still in his prime,” said Lopez.

“In terms of motivation from what I have seen and spoken to him, he is prob-ably as motivated as ever. And the more people question the better it is because it is going to increase his motivation even more to prove that they are wrong.

“I’m excited that he is here because I

think it’s one of the very important steps in getting the team to where we want it to be - which is one of the top teams in Formula 1.” Lopez feels that as a proven world cham-pion, Raikkonen will be the benchmark Renault needs to judge its competitiveness as it tries to get back to the top.

“I think we decided that we had to look forward in terms of performance and the key way to see how good a car is, is to have a good driver,” he said.

Raikkonen said he was pleased with the welcome he received at the team’s base yesterday, and that he was feeling relaxed about the task ahead. “It is my first time in Enstone,” he said, “so it is very nice to see the factory - it feels good. It is a very warm feeling and I’m very relaxed.

“I haven’t really read the newspapers about all the excitement but it is quite normal, isn’t it? It doesn’t put any more pressure on me. I always try to do my best, so I don’t put myself under pressure. It will be exciting, yes, but no pressure really and we will see how it goes.”
