The membership-based service — similar to subscription service Spotify — will provide music and video content that users can stream on computers, tablets and smartphones or listen to offline. It is being offered at two price points: $10 for standard sound quality and $20 for “lossless high fidelity sound quality.”

Few other details were released about the streaming service.

Kanye West, Daft Punk, Alicia Keys, Jack White and Nicki Minaj also were among the artists who an-nounced at a New York City event Monday that they are co-owners of the service that quietly launched in October. Keys said the artists hope Tidal will “forever change the course of music history” and ensure the viability of the industry.

The celebrities — who also in-cluded Jason Aldean, Usher, mem-bers of Arcade Fire and deadmau5 — stood in a line onstage as Keys spoke to the audience at Skylight at Moynihan Station in Manhattan. Most of them wore black as a sign of solidarity. Keys called the event “a graduation.”

“So we come together before you on this day, March 30th, 2015, with one voice in unity in the hopes that

today will be another one of those moments in time, a moment that will forever change the course of music history. For today we announce of Tidal, the first ever artist-owned, global music and entertainment platform,” Keys said.

The venue for the event was transformed to display a walkway paying tribute to the different de-cades in music, starting with the 1950s.

Coldplay’s Chris Martin and Calvin Harris, who both appeared

via video, are also co-owners.“Our mission goes beyond com-

merce, it goes beyond technology. Our intent is to preserve music’s importance in our lives,” Keys said. “Music is the language of love, of laughter, of heartbreak, of mystery. It’s the world’s true, true, without question, universal language.”

Each of the owners signed docu-ments at the event as the audience screamed when they walked to a table in the center of the stage. (ap)

SAN ANTONIO — Twenty years after Selena’s murder, the Latin world will remember “The Queen of Tejano” with concerts, lookalike contests, dances and a massive festival. But her father has mixed feelings about the cel-ebrations.

“Of course I’m happy that, today, people remember Selena more than ever,” Abraham Quintanilla, Jr. said via phone from his office in Corpus Christi. “But, as Jehovah’s Wit-nesses, we don’t celebrate deaths or birthdays, and we don’t want people to think we’re behind all the festivities.

“It’s crazy. It grows every day with events everywhere, but we’re not organizing them. Our family never got together every year on the day of her murder, because there’s nothing to celebrate, and this year won’t be the exception,” he added. “We remember our daughter every single day. We don’t need a special day to remember her.”

Selena began performing as a child, singing in Los Dinos, a band formed by her father that featured her brother A.B. on bass and sister Suzette on drums. She won a Best Mexican-American Album Gram-my for “Live,” had several hits in the U.S. and was about to cross over to the English-language pop market when, on March 31, 1995, she was murdered by Yolanda Saldivar, the president of her fan club.

Her posthumous album, “Dream-ing of You,” which was mostly recorded in English, topped the Billboard 200 chart and stayed atop the Latin charts for nine months.

Saldivar is serving a life sen-tence in her death.

Despite his reservations, Quinta-nilla has given his blessing to one event — the Festival de la Flor, featuring A.B. Quintanilla and the Kumbia King All Starz; Selena’s widower and former Los Dinos guitarist Chris Pérez; Little Joe & La Familia; Los Lobos and others.

Corpus Christi’s Conventions and Visitors Bureau will host the fes-tival April 17-18. Selena was born on April 16, 1971.

Tickets will cost no more than $5 and the city expects attendance to hit 50,000.

“It will be the first edition of an annual festival that will grow every year,” Quintanilla said.

In addition, Corpus Christi will host a Selena Tribute at Molina Veterans Park on March 31.

But Selena’s celebrations don’t stop there. The Historical Museum of Lake Jackson — the city where Selena lived until age 9 — is show-ing an exhibition of Frank Herring photographs of the star, through April 18.

California, Arizona, New York, Illinois, Colorado, Nevada and oth-er states will play host to a variety of Selena commemorations, includ-ing concerts, lookalike contests, an exhibition, karaoke nights and a drag tribute show. The two main Spanish-language TV networks in the U.S. will air special Selena pro-gramming this weekend. (ap)

Celebrates global earth hour 2015 in Fiery Island Style

SEMINYAK - Celebrating a global eco-conscious cause with an evening of local culture, fiery flavours and natural romance, Anantara Seminyak Resort & Spa along Bali’s sought after Seminyak Beach hosted a special Earth Hour dining event to raise awareness and indulge guests.

Earth Hour is an international event organised since 2007 by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and held annually towards the end of March, encouraging households and businesses all around the world to turn off non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness about the need to take action on climate change.

As part of its corporate social responsibility initiatives, Anantara Seminyak Resort & Spa supported Earth Hour’s annual global campaign on Saturday 28th March 2015 from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm by turning off exterior lights and minimis-ing lighting in all public areas and offices, as well as using candle light in appropriate public areas such as restaurants and bars.

Spoiling guests with a romantic eco-friendly evening and raising awareness for this important green cause, a Fiery Earth Hour Beach BBQ Dinner illuminated by flickering candles, flaming torches and a bonfire was accompanied by a dramatic Balinese kecak dance performance to celebrate Earth Hour.

Clinton Lovell, General Manager of Anantara Seminyak Resort & Spa, comments “It was inspiring to see how pas-sionately our associates and guests embraced the spirit of Earth Hour this year, and the success of our special beach dinner makes a powerful statement about how each of us can make a difference.”

The data collected by the Di-rectorate of the Bali Police Traffic Affairs, indicates that the traffic accident victims are on average between the ages of 16-30. In January 2015, there were 49 people involved in traffic accidents. There were 9 victims that were 9 years old or younger and also 9 victims in the 10 -15 year old ranges. The figures for February were no better, with 62 people aged 16-30, 13 people aged 9 or under and 13 people between the ages of 10-15 were involved in

traffic accidents. The chief of traffic affairs and

his staff had already been ordered to intensely disseminate traffic guid-ance to school aged youth, meant to bring awareness and discipline to driver. “This means that the results of the information dissemination have not been optimal. I have or-dered them (chief of traffic affairs) to go into schools as often as pos-sible,” said the former police chief of Denpasar.

In addition, the old program that

had many more officers and traffic posts will be revived. “Just now (Monday), I ordered the imple-mentation of this program from the chief of traffic affairs. Aside from minimizing the number of traffic accidents, it also helps to prevent crime,” he said.

Sunartha considers that public awareness of the need for orderly traffic must be increased because traffic accidents occur due to dis-orderly behavior and the viola-tion traffic regulations and signs.

TABANAN - Four residents of Tundak hamlet, Mekar Sari village, Baturiti became victims of rabies positive dogs’ bites. To deal with these incidents, the Tabanan Livestock Agency immediately eliminated the dogs and coordinated with the Tabanan Health Agency who provided anti-rabies vaccine (VAR) and anti-rabies serum (SAR) for the victims.

The Head of the Tabanan Livestock Agency, Wayan Kotio, explained on Monday (Mar. 30) that the rabies carrying dog bites cases took place before Nyepi, on Thursday (Mar. 19). Based on the report by residents, the biting dog had a fight with another dog and then headed towards local cemetery before turning towards some nearby houses where the dog bit four residents. Being suspicious that the dog might be infected with rabies, residents reported the incident and then killed the dog.

Kotio continued that after receiving the report, the officer came down to the field and took samples of the dog and then vaccinated the eight dogs that had been in contact with the rabies carrying dog.

The Tabanan Livestock Agency also eliminated two stray dogs that had been bitten by the rabies positive dog. The samples could only be sent to the Veterinary Institute to be examined on Monday (Mar. 23). Vaccine administration was resumed by targeting dogs belonging to local residents and stray dogs too. A total of 73 dogs have been vaccinated so far. “In addition to Tundak hamlet dogs, in other hamlets includ-ing Mojan were also vaccinated at Mojan hamlet, a total of 49 dogs were vaccinated,” said Kotio.

According to Kotio, one victim was bitten several times in the legs and waist, received VAR immediately and serum once the dog was confirmed to be rabies positive. “Having been bitten, all the victims were immediately provided with the anti-rabies vaccine, while anti-rabies serum is only granted to victims, once the biting dog is confirmed to have rabies. Resident after knowing the dog biting is positive to rabies,” said Kotio. (kmb24)

Many traffic accidents, awareness campaign has not been optimal

DENPASAR - The high incidence of traffic accidents is raising concern with Bali Police lead-ership, especially with the Director of Traffic Affairs, I Wayan Sunartha. These days, most of the cases involve people of productive age and mostly take place in the rural areas of Buleleng, Bangli and Karangasem.

“We need to continuously remind people. The chief of traffic affairs must diligently take action in the field and multiply the number of traffic posts,” said the three jasmine officers from Gianyar.

So far, his party has attempted to provide counseling and guidance to minimize the number of offenses. “Once again I reiterate that every accident begins with an offense. By multiplying personnel in the field, they will be more responsive and the community will not dare to violate traffic regulations,” added Sunartha.

The Traffic Affairs Director also revealed there should be no complaints of fatigue on the part

of officers, and he is prepared to set an example. There must be person-nel in charge of each post and the rotator light must be lit, especially at night. By turning on the rotator light, people are more cautious and call off their intention to violate.

“Dealing with this issue, requires a commitment to raise awareness of orderly traffic and must not be lim-ited to discourse alone. A milestone in tackling this issue will come during the implementation of “Op-eration Sympathetic” starting April 1. Likewise, when traffic personnel behave in an orderly fashion, they become a role model. Police have to become pioneers in promoting orderliness,” he said. (rah)

Kerosene reserves make up about a third of the weight on long distance passenger flights at take-off so reducing them and refuelling mid-air could mean huge savings, said the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), which participated in the study.

“The results of our collaborative research indicate a fuel burn reduc-tion potential on isolated aircraft level between 11 and 23 percent for a typical 6,000 nautical miles flight with a payload of 250 passengers,” the researchers said.

The Research for a Cruiser Enabled Air Transport Environ-ment, or RECREATE, project said even the low-end of that scale “is usually considered as large in the aerospace industry.”

The scientists, associated with nine different European research institutes, have for the past three years been studying the feasibility of civil air-to-air refuelling op-erations similar to those used for military aircraft.

The study said passenger flights could take off with less fuel and retank once they reach an altitude of 10,000 metres.

Refuelling planes would carry

enough fuel to serve between three and five passenger aircraft at spe-cific spots, like petrol stations in the sky, near the main airways and far from inhabited areas.

This would also reduce noise pollution near airports since planes make more noise the heavier they are at take-off, said Leonardo Mafriani, who heads the project for ZHAW.

The system would also allow for non-stop flights between destina-tions as far apart as Zurich and Sydney.

The researchers said they had used simulators to determine that the project is technically pos-sible.

The RECREATE project also includes a second, and far more radical proposal: creating a sort of air-metro system, with giant aircraft circling the globe, and smaller “feeder aircraft” unload-ing passengers, luggage and waste midair and transporting them to destinations along the way.

The researchers acknowledge though that for the second part of the project, “neither airworthiness nor acceptance of the idea by the general public is within sight.” (afp)

HELSINKI — American math-ematicians John F. Nash Jr. and Louis Nirenberg have won this year’s Abel Prize in mathematics. The Norwegian Academy of Sci-

ence and Letters said Wednesday that the two “mathematical giants of the 20th century” made break-throughs that have become “essen-tial tools for the study of nonlinear

partial differential equations.”The 86-year-old Nash, known for

the 2001 film about him, “A Beauti-ful Mind,” is author of a paper about game theory that helped him win the

1994 Nobel prize in economics. The awarding committee said

that Canadian-born Nirenberg, age 90, has had “one of the longest and most feted careers in mathematics”

with many results named after him and his collaborators.

MOSCOW - Russia on Saturday announced initial plans to build a new orbital space station together with NASA to replace the Interna-tional Space Station (ISS), which is set to operate until 2024.

Russia and NASA recently agreed to keep operating and fi-nancing the ISS until 2024, but future joint space projects have remained in doubt, as relations between Russia and the US have plunged to post-Cold War lows over the Ukraine conflict.

“Roscosmos together with NASA will work on the programme of a future orbital station,” the head of Russia’s Roscosmos space agency, Igor Komarov said, quoted by Interfax news agency.

Komarov made the announce-ment flanked by NASA administra-tor Charles Bolden at Russia’s Bai-

konur launchpad in Kazakhstan.“We agreed that the group of

countries taking part in the ISS project will work on the future project of a new orbital station,” Komarov said.

The Russian space chief said that the project to build the new station would be “open” and could include countries that are not currently in-volved in the ISS.

“The first step is that the ISS will operate until 2024,” he added. Russia had threatened to pull out in 2020 but said earlier this year it would keep up its role until 2024.

Roscosmos and NASA “do not rule out that the station’s flight could be extended,” Komarov added.

“Its term of existence will de-pend on the implementation of our joint projects,” Komarov said.

Russia had said earlier this year it planned to create its own space station after 2024 using its modules from the ISS after it is mothballed.

Russia’s deputy prime minister Dmitry Rogozin, who oversees the space sphere, appeared to downplay Komarov’s comments on Saturday.

“The Russian government will study the results of the talks be-tween Roscosmos and NASA. The decisions will be taken later,” Rogozin wrote on Twitter.

Late Friday, a spacecraft launched successfully carrying Russian and US astronauts to the ISS, two of whom will spend a historic year-long term on board in an experiment to study the physical effects of long-duration space mis-sions. (afp)

KUTA - The National Energy Council (DEN) warns against a sharp fall in gas production from the Mahakam block during the period of transition, before the block operation is taken over by state oil company PT Pertamina by the end of 2017. Total EP Indonesie will end its contract in the block in 2017 and the operation of the block is to be handed over to Pertamina, An-dang Bachtiar, a member of the council, said on Tuesday.

Based on the contract the government may not interfere in the operation of the block even toward the end of the contract. “The problem is that there is no clause in the contract allowing in-tervention by the government to ensure that the contractor would make additional investment need-ed to prevent a drastic fall in production,” Andang said.

The contractors may no lon-ger be interested in making new investment until the end of the contract in 2017, he said. “The block turns out 1.2 million cubic feet of natural gas per day. The production would shrink when there is no more investment. The problem is that it could take up to five to eight years to recover the normal productivity . It would make us suffer badly,” he said.

He said in the future the con-tracts have to be revised as many oil and gas contracts would expires soon , and there is no guarantee that production would continue normally after the end of the contracts.

President Director of PT Per-tamina Dwi Soetjipto said the company would need funds for investment in the event of a de-cline in the productivity of the Mahakam block.

“Pertamina would study if it could handle the operation alone or it has to team up with partners. Pertamina will welcome partner-ship,” he noted.

He said, however, that Per-tamina has been ready for the take over of the operation of the Mahakam block.

He said study was already wrapped up in February or earlier than previously set target in April 2015. “That shows how serious us in the prospect of taking over the operation of the Mahakam block after 2017,” he said.

He said the government has also warned of against a decline in productivity .

Currently the Mahakam block contract is held jointly by Total EP Indonesie of France and Inpex Corporation of Japan with Total as the operator.

Total, which has operated the block for almost 50 years, has indicated strong interest in renewing its contract, but the government has decided to hand its over to Pertamina. Pertamina will take over the gas block from Total E&P after the French oil gi-ant ends its contract for the block in East Kalimantan in 2017.

Head of the performance control unit of the energy and mineral resource ministry Wid-hyawan Prawiraatmadja said the government will not interfere in determining the Mahakam block share splits. (ant)

BANGLI - Cabbage farmers at Binyan hamlet, Buahan vil-lage, Kintamani, dissapoint at their harvest. This happens due to the falling price of cabbage reaching IDR 1,500 per kg. Not only that, this situation is com-pounded by the quality of cab-bage that is very disappointing as the impact of bad weather.

One of the local farmers, I Nyoman Kari, revealed that cabbage farmers have been confused since about a week ago because the harvest yield is far from expectation. Some

harvested cabbages look to per-ish. Besides, he is also made scream due to plummeting price of cabbage. Earlier, the price of cabbage reached IDR 2,500 per kg, but now only IDR 1,000 per kilogram. He said the price drop of cabbage happens because many farmers are harvesting at the same time. “Harvest of farmers occurs simultaneously, so that it makes oversupply. As a result, the price is down,” he said.

Such condition is also ex-perienced by another farmer,

Putu Muliarsana. Amid the drop in the price of cabbage, his burden is increasingly heavier because the price of pesticides has increased very sharply. Pesticide of caterpillars in-creased from IDR 145,000 to IDR 160,000. Inevitably, this situation makes farmers lose money. “The spending is not proportional to our income, so that many farmers suffer losses,” he said.

This is as a result of heavy rains having occurred since the past few months. Not only that,

the situation makes the pro-duction decline by 40 percent. Farmers hope the situation will get the attention from the gov-ernment so that farmers do not suffer greater losses.

Other than cabbage farmers, chili farmers at Demulih village, Susut subdistrict also experi-ences similar condition. Their productive chili has fallen down before harvest. Wayan Sutarja, one of the local farmers claimed to resign to this situation. It is the impact of hostile weather. (kmb45)

Greatfire.org said in a statement Monday that Chinese authorities carried out denial-of-service at-tacks that have intermittently shut down San Francisco-based Github over the past week. Greatfire.org said it had mirrored some of its content on Github repositories, and that the data were the targets of the

attacks.Greatfire.org said Chinese au-

thorities carried out the attacks by installing malicious code on the computers of users visiting the popular Chinese search engine Baidu and related sites and using those computers to overwhelm Github and Greatfire.org websites

with service requests. The group said the attacks marked

the first of their kind blamed on Chi-nese authorities and represented a dangerous escalation for a country that already tightly restricts what Chinese can see online. Greatfire.org said it was a direct target of similar denial-of-service attacks

earlier in March.Greatfire.org produces mir-

ror websites that let Chinese users see information normally blocked by government censors. The group doesn’t reveal where it’s located or who runs it. The Open Technology Fund, a U.S. government-backed initiative to support Internet freedom, says on its website that it provided Great-fire.org with $114,000 in 2014. The Cyberspace Administration of China didn’t respond to requests

for comment Tuesday.“Very clearly, the Cyberspace

Administration of China is be-hind both of the recent (distrib-uted denial-of-service) attacks,” Greatfire.org said in its statement. “Hijacking the computers of mil-lions of innocent internet users around the world is particularly striking as it illustrates the utter disregard the Chinese authorities have for international as well as even Chinese internet governance norms.” (ap)

BANGKOK — Thailand’s military-installed prime minister said Tuesday he plans to lift mar-tial law 10 months after staging a coup, but will invoke a special security measure that critics say is more draconian. The development has sparked concern from human rights groups, lawyers, political parties and scholars who say the measure, Article 44 of a junta-imposed interim constitution, gives Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha unchecked authority over all three branches of government.

Prayuth, the former army com-mander who led the May 22, 2014, coup that overthrew an elected

government, told reporters Tuesday that he is seeking King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s approval to revoke martial law. The monarch’s ap-proval is considered a formality. Prayuth has faced growing pressure to scrap martial law, which places the military in charge of public security nationwide and has been criticized as a deterrent to tourists and foreign investors.

Thai media have referred to Article 44 as “the dictator law.” Under a similar law in the 1960s, a Thai dictator carried out summary executions.

The measure gives Prayuth power over all aspects of govern-

ment, law and order, and absolves him of any legal responsibility for his actions.

“Article 44 essentially means Prayuth is the law. He can order the detention of anyone without charge, without having to put the person on trial and for as long as he desires,” Pravit Rojanaphruk, an outspoken columnist for The Nation newspa-per, wrote Tuesday. Prayuth sought to downplay the concerns, telling reporters he would use Article 44 “constructively” to solve security issues. “Don’t worry,” he told re-porters after a Cabinet meeting. “If you’re not doing anything wrong, there’s no need to be afraid.” (ap)

BERLIN — Lufthansa says its insurers are setting aside $300 million to deal with possible costs resulting from last week’s crash of a Germanwings jet in the French Alps, in which 150 people died.

Lufthansa spokeswoman Kerstin Lau confirmed a report on the set-aside in the daily Handelsblatt on Tuesday. She said $300 million is the amount currently reserved to deal with “all costs arising in con-nection with the case.”

Last week, the company offered immediate aid of up to 50,000 euros ($54,250) per passenger to relatives of the victims. Those payments are separate from eventual compensa-tion payments.

Prosecutors believe, based on data from the cockpit voice re-corder, that the Airbus A320’s co-pilot locked his captain out of the cockpit and deliberately crashed Flight 9525 from Barcelona to Duesseldorf last Tuesday. (ap)

BEIJING — Chinese authorities have taken over computers both inside and outside the country to launch cyberattacks against the website of an anti-online censorship group and a U.S.-based web resource that hosts some of the group’s data, according to an analysis released by the group.

“We will re-survey which route is worth passing through because the buses are large. We are also con-sidering aspects such as passenger comfort, the size of the path, inter-ference with public transportation and costs. There are a lot of things to consider,” said the Unit Head of Trans Sarbagita, I Gede Gunawan.

Gunawan added that previously the Transportation Agency has con-ducted a survey that yielded three possible routes. The first would start at Mengwi Terminal passing Ubung Terminal and then turn left at the Ubung intersection to Tohpati, Jalan Bypass IB Mantra and turn right to Jalan W.R. Supratman, enter

the city to SMAN 7 Denpasar and finally back to Mengwi.

“We also made a survey of a route from the Ubung intersection, turning left and entering Jalan Nangka and then going to Jalan WR Supratman. However, this route is rather crowded at Satria. At the southern end of Jalan Nangka,

turning left is crowded. Then, we also tried to turn right at the Ubung intersection to enter Jalan Mahendradatta then go directly to Jalan Imam Bonjol and continue to Benoa. On the roadmap, a Mengwi-Benoa Harbor via the city route is highlighted,” he continued.

Although it is fully managed by Perum Damri, Gunawan said that his party will not close the possibility to assist the establishment of shelter even though there are signs from the central government that they may provide as-sistance. But clearly, the government

of Bali will no longer subsidize the operation of Corridor 8. Moreover, the income from this corridor will go entirely to Perum Damri.

The Head of Perum Damri Den-pasar, Made Suma Artika, said that the operation of Corridor 8 will continue to follow the Trans Sar-bagita minimum service standards including the tariff applied to pas-sengers that will remain the same as it is today. However, the transport feeder is submitted to the Trans-portation Agency of the county or municipality. (kmb32)

DENPASAR - Hundreds of unlicensed billboards, including Nyepi congratulatory billboards that expired on Monday (Mar. 30), were dismantled by the Denpasar Municipal Police. The dismantling, that was assisted by Indonesian Military (TNI) personnel was done in accordance with municipal rules, and an agreement made between relevant institutions and commu-nity organizations some time ago.

The Chief of the Denpasar Municipal Police, Ida Bagus

Alit Wiradana, revealed that the dismantling of the billboards started from the Akasia round-about on Jalan Hayam Wuruk, and continued through Renon, Jalan Diponegoro, Jalan Hassanudin, Jalan Gajah Mada, and a num-ber of other streets in Denpasar. Such an action was scheduled to be carried out again on Tuesday. “Demolition of the billboards will continue until they are all down,” he said.

Alit Wiradana explained that

the dismantled billboards mostly consisted of Nyepi congratulatory billboards. According to the results of a meeting between related insti-tutions and community organiza-tions, the billboards can only be left on display until seven days after Nyepi. Indeed, there are a number of billboards that were dismantled by their owners on time. However, since others have not taken respon-sibility for taking down their signs, the Municipal Police had no choice but to do it for them. “Since some

billboards are still are display, we are forced to take them down,” he said.

He hoped the billboard owners would understand the steps taken by the government. Other than be-ing in accordance to the agreement made together, the dismantling is also meant to bring awareness about keeping the face of the city clean.

To note, on March 13 a meeting between the ranks of the municipal police, Spatial Planning and Hous-

ing Agency, Sanitation and Land-scaping Agency (DKP), Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI), Customary Village Middle Assembly, Forum of Denpasar Headmen, 1611/Badung Military District Command as well as a number of community organiza-tions, was held in Denpasar. The meeting confirmed that the Nyepi congratulatory billboards should be taken down and that the deadline for doing so is seven days after Nyepi. (kmb25)

The Financial Times reported that Masato Kitera, Tokyo’s envoy in Beijing, said in an in-terview Japan is likely to join the AIIB within a few months, a move that would leave Washing-ton as the only big holdout.

But Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Tuesday the ambassador had not made any such comment and Japan’s position on the AIIB had not changed.

“I have been informed that it is not true that Ambassador Kitera made such remarks forecasting (Japan’s) participation,” Suga told a news conference.

The report comes just before the end-March deadline China has set for participation in the bank as a founding member.

Australia, Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Russia have all said they intend to join the

Beijing-headquartered $50 bil-lion institution, despite scepti-cism in Washington and Tokyo. China’s neighbour and long-time foe Taiwan said Monday it would also make a formal application to join.

“Japan is dubious about wheth-er (the AIIB) would be properly governed or whether it would damage other creditors,” Suga said. Japan is a key player in the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which would be a rival.

“Anyway, I think it’s impossi-ble for Japan to take part today,” the government’s top spokesman said, adding that Tokyo would work together with Washington, its top ally, and other countries to ask Beijing for clarification.

The new multinational lender is seen as a threat to the World Bank and the ADB, two institu-tions that are heavily influenced

by the US and Japan.Washington has been left in-

creasingly isolated in its opposi-tion to the AIIB, which opponents claim could end up as a Chinese vehicle that has low standards on governance, the environment and social issues.

President Barack Obama’s administration has waged an intense but low-profile lobby-ing campaign against it, but has watched with frustration as allies around the world pile in, with some hoping to curry favour in Beijing and others not wanting to miss out on a lucrative part of the world.

China is expected to foot the bulk of the initial money needed to get the AIIB started, with donations from other members set to increase the size of the overall fund to more than $100 billion. (afp)

JAKARTA - The Financial Service Authority (OJK) said the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) is one of the best performing stock markets in ASEAN in the first quar-ter of 2015.

“So far this year, the Jakarta composite index (JCI) of BEI grew 4.05 percent with capitalization rising 4.12 percent. This is one of the best in ASEAN. This is a good start. Hopefully would continue throughout the year,” OJK’s Capital Market Supervision Chief Execu-tive Nurhaida said.

The highest growth in index of 9.25 percent was recorded by the Philippines, with BEI coming sec-ond with a growth of 4.05 percent, followed by Malaysia 3.44 percent , Singapore 2.56 percent and Thai-land 0.35 percent.

The positive performance of BEI was attributable to good perfor-mance of the listed companies and the country’s economic condition, that tended to be positive, Nurhaida said on Monday.

She said in a bid to maintain good performance of the domestic market, OJK would stick to three main principles in market deepen-ing including supply, demand and market infrastructure.

“One factor included in the market deepening is to increase the number of products in the market either through increasing the num-ber of companies launching initial public offering (IPO) or the types of their product such as bonds and mutual funds,” she said.

He said OJK is processing plans of two companies seeking to launch

IPO. In addition, OJK has also issued

guidelines for the product of assets backed securities in the form of Par-ticipation Letter (EBA SP) related to housing secondary financing.

“There is already regulation on EBA SP, PT Sarana Multigriya Fi-nancial (SMF) is in the final phase of issuing the product,” she said.

Nurhaida said in order to en-courage increase in the number of products, OJK is drafting a regula-tion to facilitate issuance of more products.

“The facility given would not be at the expense of investors. The facility offered is expected to at-tract more investors to the domestic market,” she said.

The ultimate goal of market deepening is creating balance in the

number of foreign and domestic in-vestors in the market,” she added.

The balance in the composition between foreign and domestic inves-tors would better guarantee industrial stability amid the varying sentiments such as it is at present, she said

“As we all know that foreign investors still dominate the number of investors in the domestic market. The role of domestic investors needs to be promoted by offering them facility to enter the market,” she said.

Based on data at PT Kustodian Sentral Efek Indonesia (KSEI), a self regulatory organization of Indonesian capital market, in Febru-ary 2015, assets of local investors were valued at Rp1,341.43 trillion and those of foreign investors Rp2,002.86 trillion. (ant)

Models in gas masks highlight Indonesian environmental devastation

The women marched up and down in black rubber boots on a runway of wooden planks to dance music, brandishing banners that read “Say no to fashion with a toxic trail”.

The show, put on by environ-mental group Greenpeace and local designers, was aimed at highlight-ing the destruction caused by textile factories, including many producing clothes for global brands,

that have for years been spewing industrial waste into the country’s waterways.

“Greenpeace urges the industry to stop polluting the environment with hazardous chemicals,” said the group’s campaigner Ahmad Ashov Birry, who was organising the show.

“We urge the government to take stern action against the polluters

and strengthen regulations related to the management of hazardous chemicals for a toxic-free future.”

Last week’s show took place at Rancaekek, part of the Citarum River Basin on Java island, which is the heart of the Indonesian textile industry.

The area was named as one of the 10 most polluted places on Earth in 2013 by environmental groups the Blacksmith Institute and Green

Cross Switzerland. The groups found a wide range

of toxins -- including aluminium and manganese -- in the river, which supplies much of the water to the capital Jakarta.

In Rancaekek alone, more than 1,200 hectares (3,000 acres) of paddy fields have been polluted, according to Greenpeace.

The show was part of a Green-peace campaign called “Detox”, which has been running since 2011 and is aimed at getting well-known brands to ensure that their suppliers

do not release hazardous chemicals into the environment.

Big names such as Spain’s Zara and Germany’s Adidas have com-mitted to the campaign.

Rivers and crops have been poi-soned by pollution across the vast Indonesian archipelago by a wide range of industries, from manufac-turing to mining.

More than 100 million Indone-sians, out of a population of 250 million, have no access to safe water, according to Greenpeace. (afp)

JAKARTA- Nine Indonesian men have died after consuming alcohol mixed with mosquito repellent, police said Monday, the latest deaths in the country linked to tainted drinks.

The men bought the drinks on the street in the city of Prabu-mulih on Sumatra island on Thursday and were admitted to local hospitals after falling ill, local police spokesman Djarod Padakova told AFP.

The first victim died on Fri-day, with the ninth passing away on Sunday, he added. A tenth man survived.

Padakova said the alcohol had been mixed with mosquito repellent and energy drinks. Media reports said the alcohol was a local brand of gin.

There have been many pre-vious cases where people have died after consuming contami-nated drinks in Indonesia.

Last year 16 people died after drinking tainted alcohol to celebrate New Year’s Eve on the main island of Java.

The small proportion of those who consume alcohol in Muslim-majority Indonesia sometimes opt for cheap drinks bought on the street, because legally produced alcohol is heavily taxed and much is im-ported. (afp)

SINGAPORE - Oil prices fell in Asia Tuesday as dealers monitored last-ditch efforts between global powers and Iran to reach a deal on Tehran’s nuclear programme and ease sanctions imposed on the crude producer.

US benchmark West Texas Intermediate fell 69 cents to $47.99 while Brent eased 55 cents to $55.74 in mid-day trade.

Singapore United Overseas Bank said prices “tumbled as hopes for a nuclear deal with Iran climbed”.

Foreign ministers of US-led major world pow-ers are racing to beat a midnight Tuesday deadline to nail down a framework deal with Iran they hope will put an atomic bomb out of the Islamic repub-lic’s reach.

“There are marathon meetings happening all over the place. There are several issues that have not been resolved yet. These are important issues,” an Iranian negotiator in the Swiss city of Lausanne said late Monday.

US Secretary of State John Kerry, in Lausanne

since Wednesday for the latest in a series of meetings with Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif that have criss-crossed the globe, said Monday there was still work to do.

“There still remain some difficult issues,” Kerry told CNN. “We are working very hard to work those through. We are working late into the night and obviously into tomorrow.”

Under the deal, due to be finalised by June 30, the powers want Iran to scale back its nuclear programme to give the world ample notice of any dash to make a bomb by extending the so-called “breakout” time.

In return diplomatically isolated Tehran, which denies wanting atomic weapons, is demanding the lifting of sanctions that have strangled its economy.

With the world’s fourth biggest oil and second biggest gas reserves, the energy industry is the cor-nerstone of Iran’s economy, but it has been hit hard by the American and European embargo imposed since 2012. (afp)

NEW YORK — IBM is investing $3 billion to build an “In-ternet of Things” division aimed at harnessing the massive trove of data collected by smartphones, tablets, connected vehicles and appliances and using it to help companies better manage their businesses.

IBM estimates that 90 percent of all data generated by mobile and “smart” devices is never analyzed. The Armonk, New York, company hopes to change this by teaming up with companies like Twitter and the Weather Co., the owner of the Weather Channel, and developing cloud-based data services and tools for app developers.

IBM is training more than 2,000 consultants, researchers and developers to help businesses come up with new ways to use the vast amounts of data that are now available, said Glenn Finch, Big Data and Analytics Lead at IBM Global Business Services. This could mean combining Twitter data with economic and weather data to predict what someone might be interested in buying. The new business unit is part of IBM’s shift away from hardware toward spending billions to focus on analytics, cloud computing, mobile services and security.

IBM plans to launch an online service that helps insurance companies extract insight from connected vehicles, to create new pricing and services customized to individual drivers. Meanwhile, the Weather Co. plans to shift and integrate its massive weather data operation into the IBM Cloud, so that insurance providers could send policyholders text messages alerting them to impending hailstorms and vehicles could be moved before being damaged, for instance. It could also help determine exactly how many people were hit by a natural di-saster so insurers could respond to claims faster.

“Most people, most businesses, most governments wait for weather to happen to them and react to it rather than anticipate what it will do to them,” said Mark Gildersleeve, president of the Weather Co.’s WSI division. The IBM partnership “aims to help governments and businesses essentially serve their end users better by making decisions earlier,” he said. (ap)

Holmes’ parents and attorneys have said he was in the grips of a psy-chotic episode when he slipped into the suburban Denver movie theater and opened fire during a showing of a Batman movie. But the book offers no new insight into his diagnosis. Opening statements in his trial are scheduled for April 27. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

“I wrote Jim a letter telling him I am sorry I did not know that he was mentally ill,” she wrote in a March 2014 passage. “The letter did not assuage my guilt. I apologize to the whole world. I was uneducated. So many deceased and so many badly injured, and I am still alive.” Holmes announced the book to the Del Mar Times (http://bit.ly/1IKADqV) in her first interview since the shooting.

She and her husband told the news-paper they are bracing themselves for their son’s trial and still hope his life can be spared through a plea deal.

“This book is being published to raise awareness of the immorality of the death penalty and the futility of seeking justice through execution,” she wrote in the book, which was taken largely from her handwritten journals.

The rest of the book contains prayers for prosecutors and defense attorneys alike, her experiences in the courtroom and reflections on her own struggles with depression after the shooting. She writes that she prays for victims daily, naming each of them. She also laments what she sees as a lack of compassion for the mentally ill.

In an entry from Jan. 12, 2013, she recalled the violence and wrote, “What were you thinking, Jim? And what are you thinking now? Praying for Jim in jail; please don’t commit suicide. You lived so that we could understand you and others could study you and learn to prevent future tragedy.” Some victims’ families questioned the timing.

“I can only think this is some kind of ploy. This is some type of strategy cooked up by the defense to try to save someone’s life,” said Tom Sullivan, whose son Alex was killed in the shooting. Holmes’ mother’s thoughts and apologies mean little to him, he said. “As far as people I think about on a daily basis, they are so far down the list it’s not worth mentioning.” (ap)

BOSTON, England — Boston is a typical English town — an-cient church, traditional shops, Polish supermarkets, Baltic bak-eries. Amid the bargain-hunting crowds on market day, eastern European languages are almost as common as the local Lincoln-shire accent. Immigration has transformed Boston in the last decade. At least one in eight resi-dents comes from eastern Europe, and the population is growing at double the national rate.

The change Boston is seeing is not unique — and unhappiness about Britain’s transformation is reshaping the political landscape as voters prepare to choose a new government, fueling support for outsider politicians focused on immigration. With no party firmly in the lead, the race for the May 7 election looks set to produce a fragmented Parliament for a fractured nation.

“I think there are a few too many of the foreign brigade here at the moment,” said butcher Nigel Lote. His customers come almost exclusively from the long-settled English population of Boston, a town of about 65,000 that gave its name and its Pilgrim heritage to the Massachusetts city. “It’s getting to the stage where there’s them and us,” he said. “We don’t mingle.”

A short walk away is West Street, a once-declining commer-cial strip now lined with grocery

stores, delis and information centers for the eastern European community. Shelves are packed with pickled vegetables and canned fish. Notices advertise rooms to rent, used cars and agri-cultural jobs in the fields around Boston.

Karolina Mediancevaite, serv-ing customers in a Lithuanian bakery, paused when asked if the locals are friendly. “Some,” she said. “It would be better if they talked to you and not look at you like ‘You are not from this country.’” Robin Hunter-Clarke, local candidate for the U.K. Inde-pendence Party, said Boston has “huge social problems.”

“There are some streets that local people won’t walk down because they feel uncomfort-able,” he said. “And I think that’s sad. And that’s because of the sheer number of people that have entered one small market town.”

UKIP, which has risen rapidly from ragtag band of right-wing dissidents to serious political force, is the main beneficiary of Britain’s unease about immigra-tion.

The party wants Britain to leave the European Union — closing the door to EU citizens, who currently can work freely in the U.K. — and create a more restrictive immigration system geared to Britain’s labor needs. (ap)

BUENOS AIRES — Many businesses were shuttered and streets were mostly empty Tues-day as the country’s transporta-tion unions called a nationwide strike to protest income tax rates and high inflation in the South American country.

While transportation workers represent only a small part of the workforce, shutting down the subways, trains and buses created a domino effect because many Argentines have no other way to get to work or get children to school.

Many domestic and interna-tional flights coming into the country had also been canceled, as transportation unions repre-sent many airport workers.

The unions argue that high taxes and high inflation, which private economists put at more than 30 percent, have eroded away wage gains the last couple of years.

Top officials in President

Cristina Fernandez’s administra-tion have rejected the demands, saying the tax rates are fair and only impact a small percentage of workers who earn more than 15,000 pesos ($1,765) a month.

Unions have long held great influence in Argentina, and cur-rently represent an estimated 30 to 40 percent of the 11 million registered workers.

More than trying to extract concessions from a lame-duck president, the strike was a way to send a signal to candidates before the October general elections, said Patricio Giusto, director of Political Diagnostic, an Argen-tine-based think tank. Fernandez is barred from running for a third term in October.

“Whoever wins, the next presi-dent is going to have to deal with this situation,” Giusto said. “It’s unavoidable if they don’t want to have conflicts” with a large sector of the population.

DENVER — The mother of Colorado theater shooting defendant James Holmes feels guilty for not knowing her son was mentally ill and needed treatment, she wrote in a book of prayers and reflections compiled since the 2012 attack. Zach Randolph scored 15 points for Memphis, and Marc Gasol had eight points and 11 rebounds. Kosta Koufos grabbed a season-high 12 boards as the Grizzlies outrebound-ed the Kings 45-41.

In Toronto, DeMar DeRozan scored a career-high 42 points and tied his career best with 11 rebounds as the Raptors earned their eighth straight home victory over the Rockets. Jonas Valanciunas scored 15 points for Toronto, and Lou Wil-liams had 13.

James Harden scored 31 for the Rockets, who had won four in a row. Houston has not won in Canada since March 2007. In other games, Boston beat Charlotte 116-104 to move back into the eighth and final playoff spot in the East-ern Conference, Portland secured

a playoff berth with a 109-86 win over Phoenix, and East-leading At-lanta maintained its rhythm heading into the playoffs with a 101-88 win over Milwaukee.

Boston’s Avery Bradley had 30 points and eight rebounds and Evan Turner scored 15 points as the Celt-ics won for the 10th time in the last 16 games.

The Celtics are now a few per-centage points ahead of Brooklyn in the battle for the East’s final playoff spot. Charlotte’s playoff hopes have dimmed after dropping four of its last five games.

In Portland, Oregon, Damian Lil-lard scored 19 points for the Blazers, who have won four straight to edge closer to their first Northwest Divi-sion title since 2008-09. LaMarcus Aldridge added 17 points and seven

rebounds, and Portland led by as many as 31 points. The Blazers rest-ed their starters in the fourth quarter after building a 92-65 lead.

Atlanta has already clinched the top seed in the Eastern Conference but is trying to maintain its play-ing edge while staying healthy for the final two weeks of the regular season. DeMarre Carroll scored 23 points to help Atlanta improve to 56-18, one win away from tying the team record.

Elsewhere, Jordan Clarkson made the tiebreaking basket with 0.7 seconds left in overtime, lift-ing the Los Angeles Lakers past Philadelphia 113-111 in a matchup of two of the NBA’s worst teams. Utah’s Gordon Hayward scored 22 points as the Jazz topped Minnesota 104-84. (ap)

MIAMI - Defending cham-pion Novak Djokovic defeated Belgium’s Steve Darcis 6-0 7-5 on Monday to power into the last 16 of the Miami Open along with Japan’s Kei Nishikori, Canada’s Milos Raonic and American John Isner. The Serbian world number one, who just like last year won at Indian Wells before heading to South Florida, will face Alexandr Dolgopolov, a 7-5 6-4 winner over Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci, in the fourth round.

Djokovic, who is seeking a fifth win at Miami, wrapped up a one-sided first set in 26 minutes but faced a sterner test in the second. Darcis broke to go ahead 5-4 but after the Serb levelled up the set, he broke back and held on to secure the match.

“I managed to come back in the right moment,” Djokovic said.

“I kind of elevated the intensity and started playing a little bit more with depth on the ball. “He’s got a lot of variety, especially from his backhand side. “So I was handling it really good for first 30 minutes, then started to make some unforced errors and started to play a little bit more neutral, a little bit slower, and he got into the match.

“I complicated my own life in the second set but in the end of

the day, it’s a win.” Fourth-seed Nishikori had even less trouble as he crushed Serbia’s Viktor Troicki 6-2 6-2 in 63 minutes.

Troicki, who needed medical treatment to his left side during the match, struggled to cope with Nishikori throughout with the 25-year-old converting five of his six break points. “I was almost perfect on the court. It is so exciting that I am playing well here,” said Ni-shikori. “Maybe he was hurting a little bit but I was still putting him under pressure with my return.”

Raonic also moved into the fourth round after a hard-earned 6-1 5-7 7-6 (3) win over French 31st seed Jeremy Chardy. Raonic was broken when serving for the match at 5-4 in the second and then Chardy went on to force the third set.

“He started playing more freely and I sort of went the other way,” said Raonic. “He played well in the second set and I think he played better than I did in the third.”

Isner provided an upset as the 22nd seed won 7-6(2) 6-2 over ninth seeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov while Belgian 18th seed David Goffin beat Poland’s Jerzy Janowicz 6-4 6-3 and Spain’s sixth seed David Ferrer got past Czech Lukas Rosol 6-4 7-5. (rtr)

“I know it will not be easy but I am car-rying on in my work,” Conte told report-ers, who quit Juventus in July. “Mennea said that to achieve big dreams, one must make great effort,” he added, citing the late Pietro Mennea, the Olympic champion whose 200 metres world record lasted more than 16 years.

Conte was criticised after Juventus mid-fielder Claudio Marchisio suffered a knee injury during an Italy training session on Friday. John Elkann, the head of the hold-ing company which controls FIAT and Juventus, said the Italy coach worked the players too hard during training camps.

Conte was also reported to have received death threats on the internet and some re-ports said he had considered quitting before Saturday’s 2-2 Euro qualifying draw away to Bulgaria. “Let us work, we need it. We

have not much time, we will do the maxi-mum to qualify, I can promise a great job by all of us,” Conte said.

“Hard work ought to be the norm but it’s an exception,” he added. “I’m told that I work too hard and I don’t know how to respond to that.” Italy have managed five wins and two draws under Conte, yet the coach has never been far from contro-versy.

In February, there were also suggestions he could resign after clubs failed to reach an agreement to release their players for a planned training camp. “We are going through a significant change in generation and we need a little patience,” said Conte, who is faced with a rebuilding job.

“We are trying to build something good and we need to allow players to settle in the national team without being rejected at

the first opportunity.“It was a strong emotion to go

through the gate of the Juventus Stadium, entering the dressing room and going on to the pitch,” he added. “There were three fantastic, extraordinary years, with many indelible and exciting memories.” (ap)

TURIN - Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane will make his first England start in Tuesday’s friendly international against Italy after an instant impact on his debut last week, manager Roy Hodgson said on Monday. “Harry Kane will make full debut and play from the start and Wayne Rooney will captain the team,” Hodgson told reporters.

“It’s nice to see the two of them on the field together from the start. Harry certainly deserves his chance.” Kane, joint top scorer in the Premier League with 19 goals, headed England’s fourth goal 80 seconds after replacing Rooney in the 4-0 win over Lithuania in Fri-day’s Euro 2016 qualifier.

Rooney, who has 102 England caps and is on the verge of breaking Bobby Charlton’s 45-year-old Eng-land scoring record of 49 goals, was delighted at the prospect of playing alongside Kane for the first time.

“It’s exciting that Harry Kane has done well in the Premier League. It’s fantastic. Hopefully he con-tinues that form with England,” said Rooney, who has scored 47 international goals..

“It’s a big night for him with his first start for England. I’m sure he’ll be excited. He’ll go out and

Radamel Falcao went within one goal of Colombia’s scoring re-cord by netting a penalty on Monday to complete a 3-1 victory over Kuwait in a friendly.

Despite Falcao’s struggles for Manchester United this season, the striker has netted three in two games for his country during the international break.

The Colombia captain scored from the penalty spot in the 74th minute, taking his international tally to 24 — one short of retired striker Arnoldo Iguaran’s national record.

Abel Aguilar volleyed in Colombia’s opener from the edge of the penalty area in the 22nd, but Musaed Alenezi leveled on the stroke of halftime for Kuwait.

Edwin Cardona restored Colombia’s lead in the 68th with a long-range striker before Falcao made sure of the victory. Falcao also scored twice in a 6-0 rout of Bahrain in a friendly last week, but he hasn’t found the net for United in two months. (ap)

GENEVA — Europe’s top clubs have agreed to a new deal with UEFA which gives them more money and a bigger say in how European soccer is run. The European Club Association said Tuesday it renewed a working accord through May 2022 which guarantees clubs at least 200 million euros ($214 million) from UEFA’s Euro 2020 income. The current deal is for a flat fee of 150 million euros ($161 million) for the 2016 European Championship.

The new deal tops the $209 million that FIFA agreed to with the ECA two weeks ago to share among clubs worldwide from each of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

Including other considerations, UEFA is likely to give even more than the promised $214 million euros in 2020. “Clubs will receive 8 percent of income from broadcast, commercial and ticketing (and) hospitality (for Euro 2020),” the ECA and UEFA said in a statement.

UEFA will also give the 214-member ECA two seats on its policy-making ex-ecutive committee. “These achievements

are an extraordinary success,” said ECA chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who is likely to take one of the executive com-mittee places.

Rummenigge, the Bayern Munich chair-man, said the new accord “will strengthen the solidarity among the clubs and our sense of responsibility for football.” UEFA President Michel Platini said in a statement that Rummenigge “has been a pleasure to work with.”

The deal, announced at the clubs’ as-sembly in Stockholm, also confirmed increased revenue of 2.24 billion euros ($2.4 billion) for the Champions League and Europa League combined over the next three seasons.

The 32 Champions League group-stage clubs will share 1.2 billion euros ($1.29 billion) each season, up from 957 million euros ($1.03 billion) this season. Each is guaranteed a 12 million euro ($12.9 mil-lion) entry payment instead of 8.6 million euros ($9.2 million).

Key to the deal was making the second-

tier Europa League more lucra-tive, and giving bigger shares to teams eliminated in the qualify-ing rounds.

The 48 clubs in the Europa League groups next season will share 381 million euros ($409 million) and be guaranteed 2.4 million euros ($2.58 million). This season, the figures are 232 million euros ($249 million) and 1.3 million euros ($1.4 million). (ap)

UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Montenegro and Russia after Saturday’s Euro 2016 qualifier in Podgorica was abandoned in the second half fol-lowing crowd trouble and a scuffle among the players.

European soccer’s governing body said on Monday it was prob-ing the “setting off and throwing of fireworks and objects” by Mon-tenegro and Russia fans during the Group G match.

Montenegro’s FA (FSCG) is also being investigated for “holding a match that did not get played in full”, UEFA said in a statement. The match was goalless when it was abandoned.

The game was first delayed by 33 minutes when Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev was hit on the head by a flare thrown from the Montene-gro section of the ground soon after kickoff. He had to come off and was taken to hospital with burns.

Midway through the second half a scuffle ensued between players near the touchline and Russia mid-fielder Dmitri Kombarov was hit by a missile prompting the referee to abandon the game.

The Football Union of Russia (RFS) has lodged a protest with UEFA and wants to be awarded the points. Third-placed Russia and Montenegro in fourth are level on five points from four matches. (rtr)

Conte banishes any suggestion of quitting

TURIN - Antonio Conte banished any idea that he was quitting as Italy coach on Monday and said that there was nothing wrong with hard work, in an apparent reply to suggestions he was overworking his players. Conte was in emotional mood as he returned to the Juventus stadium, where he won three Serie A titles in as many seasons as coach, for an Italy training session ahead of Tuesday’s friendly against England.

(rtr)

(ap)

(kmb25)

The study said passenger flights could take off with less fuel and retank once they reach an altitude of 10,000 metres.

enough fuel to serve between three and five passenger aircraft at spe-cific spots, like petrol stations in the sky, near the main airways and far from inhabited areas.

The annual 6 million kroner ($820,000) award will be presented in Oslo on May 19. (ap)

(kmb45)

(rah)

(ap)
