A very warm welcome to the 3rd Edition of the Edinburgh Spanish Film Festival.

This year we are very proud to offer you an even more exciting and varied programme, as well as expanding ESFF to include screenings of some of films in Glasgow.

We have a lot of ‘love’, ‘drama’ and ‘melodrama’ in this edition with films such as La novia, Amantes and El mundo sigue.

Our opening film La novia by Paula Ortiz, is the latest adaptation of one of Federico García Lorca’s most famous plays Bodas de sangre and we are delighted to have Paula with us for the Opening Night.

In this 3rd Edition, we continue to open windows to Catalan and Basque cinema with four wonderful films: Amama; Un otoño sin Berlín; Sexo, Maracas y Chichuahuas; and El rey de La habana.

We will also be showcasing films from some talented, first-time directors working in the industry at the moment. They include Lara Izagirre (Un otoño sin Berlín), Asier Altuna (Amama), Jayro Bustamante (Ixcanul), Juan Miguel del Castillo (Techo y comida) and Andrea Barrionuevo (Club de reyes) as well as established directors, Icíar Bollaín (El Olivo) and Agustí Villaronga (El rey de La Habana).

For the ‘cinema buffs’ we have some ‘joyas rescatadas’ (hidden gems), including the ‘forgotten’ masterpiece El mundo sigue, recently restored 52 years after being censured by Franco, *unmissable!!!* and Amantes, the tale of a love triangle, released 25 years ago but still hugely relevant.

We are pleased to introduce a new window to Latin-American films with two young and talented directors, Álvaro Brechner, director of both Mal día para pescar and Mr. Kaplan, plus Jayro Bustamante’s Ixcanul.

Finally, as a result of the success of the ‘Films for Schools’ section, we are screening an animated film for primary schools Donkey Xote to commemorate the 400th centenary of the death of Cervantes. This year we are touring this throughout Scotland.

As with last year, several directors will present their films and host Q&A sessions during the festival. There is a wide selection of female Spanish film directors in this edition, and our short films event ‘La tarde en corto’ will feature works by directors from the ECAM School in Spain.

The returning ‘Gastronomic Film Evening’ will be based on the theme of sustainable fishing. There are three wonderful thought-provoking short films presented by Diego Gallegos ‘El chef del caviar’.

We would like to thank everybody who has been involved in this edition: staff, friends, volunteers and above all, the sponsors who have trusted us and helped to make this festival possible. Special thanks also goes to everybody that made our fundraising events an incredible success. Without you, this festival wouldn’t be possible.

Many thanks for your support. We hope to see you at our screenings and events!

After fleeing Europe for Uruguay during World War II, Jacob Kaplan has built himself a quiet life. To help him on his mission, Kaplan recruits an ex-policeman, Wilson Contreras, and together they embark on a wildly quixotic journey. With his second full length feature, the Uruguayan director Álvaro Brechner proves himself to be one of the most exciting voices in Latin American cinema today.

Fearful of losing custody of her son and on the verge of being evicted, time is against her to find a seemingly impossible solution. A poignant and challenging story with an incredible cast and a stunning performance by Natalia de Molina as Rocío. Director Juan Miguel del Castillo captures the difficulties of the economic crisis in Spain, depicted through acts such as evictions and feelings of precariousness and helplessness with clarity, transparency and poignancy.

Referring to this idea of a rigorous and objective exhibition comes the desire to call my Atlas subjective. Diáspora creativa is part of a series called Subjective Atlas. This specific project is a collection of portraits of Spanish people who have moved to Edinburgh and struggle to find their own voice and express their creativity in their new environment.

The work explores and reveals a snapshot of the rich and varied creative minds that have left Spain and found inspiration in Edinburgh's nooks and crannies.

The work consists of 33 diptychs, a total of 66 pictures, of 33 Spanish people living in Edinburgh and their favourite places in the city: whether a corner in a street, a bar, or a whole landscape. The portraits of the people are associated with their places as if an extension of themselves.
