HELLO.I youre reading this, then its probably that timeo year when Fringe shows, comedians, actorsand entertainers across the world become graphicdesigners or a week. Or two.

And as can so oten happen when the roles arereversed and graphic-designers attempt to go onstage, it can easily end in tears.

The advice and tips contained within this guideshould, hopeully, help you to avoid the most commonmistakes made when preparing artwork. Weve usedAdobe Indesign as the basis o this guide, along witha smattering o Photoshop, but the same basic rulesapply across most design packages.

Were not trying to teach you how to suck eggs. Eventhe most competent designer can make a very simplemistake; we see them all the time. And who doesntmake mistakes occasionally?

I we can help you get your artwork right rst time, itwill save us all time and money; very valuable whendeadlines are rapidly approaching.

One last bit o advice: I youre really stuck, pay agraphic designer to put you right. Theyre usuallycheaper than a reprint o your yers and posters.

    Good luck!Lee, Tim and Joe.

DONT PANIC.I youre really not sure what to do with your les, contact us on 0800 500 3110 or +44 (0)115 958 5791 ,or email [email protected]. Well try ourbest to help you out. Promise.

Bad artwork wastes your time and money. Sometimes,it really is cheaper to employ a designer to prepareyour artwork than dabbling yoursel. Its a alseeconomy i ever weve seen one.

We dont provide graphic design, but we know plentyo great and aordable designers i you need somehelp? Just ask.

BLEED.The most common design mistake we see is artworksupplied without bleed. Bleed is a printing term thatreers to printing that goes beyond the edge o thesheet ater trimming. The bleed is the part on the sideo a document that gives us a small amount o space

to account or movement o the paper, and designinconsistencies.

I you require the print to run right up to and o theedge o the paper (known as bleeding), you mustENSURE that all design elements which touch theedges o the page are extended by 3mm (i.e. hanging3mm o the edges o the paper).

Also, please keep all live text and logos at least 3mm

away rom the edge o the item (6mm away rom theedge o the bleed).

We will reject your artwork i there is not enough bleed.

These dialogue boxes are rom Adobe Indesign. Most design sotware is very similar. I you orget to addbleed, you should be able to amend the set-up at anypoint during the design process.

Set your bleed to 3mm on all margins, and just ignorethe Slug.

Did we say 3mm o bleed? Thats 3mm o bleed.

    3mm.

    Bleed.

BLEED CONTINUED.When rst laying out your item, you have to be awarethat the item will have TWO margins. Firstly, there isyour item size (A6 etc), which will be the nished sizewhen printed and trimmed. This is the Black line. Thesecond margin is your BLEED edge.

The rst example (right) is incorrectly sized, suppliedwithout bleed, with lo-res images (more on this later). Its a graphic-design crime. I we enlarged the artworkto provide more bleed, we would then run into asecond very common problem, shown below.

The second example is o another yer sent to uswithout bleed. Ater the artwork has been increased bya ew % to ll the bleed area, you can see that the logo

and text is now hanging over the edge o the yer.The Brown line is the actual edge o the artworkincluding the bleed area. The black line is the edge othe actual nal yer, marking where we cut your yers.Hence, well trim part o o the word GAG and theedge o the C logo.

The third example here is perect. The backgroundimage extends beyond the trim marks, meaning NOwhite edges. The text is well away rom the trim marks,so no lost text. Well done!

It is also important to note that adding a white borderto your artwork is NOT adding bleed. We use bleed toensure colour runs toi the edge o the item, thereore awhite border does not x the problem.

IMAGES.Ever seen a yer or poster with a really pixelated imageor logo? This is why, and how to avoid it yoursel.

All non-vector images (e.g. photos or logos - jpegs)should be at 300dpi resolution, or theyll end up like an

old computer game. Much like the background o thispage in act.

This background is extremely jagged and totallyunprintable. What you see on screen is what youll seeon paper, resolution wise.

I it looks awul on screen, it will look awul on paper,

Dont nick any images or logos straight o the Internet

as they will probably be 72dpi. Use ofcial logos, setor print at 300dpi. You can check any image or its dpiin Photoshop. Just open the image, open the IMAGEmenu, and then choose the IMAGE SIZE option. Adialogue box will open detailing the image size.

As you can see, our tenold logo is at a resolution o72 pixels/inch. The eagle-eyed o you will also spot ourlogo is in RGB ormat. Naughty.

And more on the thorny issue o colour mode is onthe next page....

COLOUR.This is perhaps the most basic error we see with artwork,

and is the easiest o all to avoid.

I you are supplying artwork to be printed in Full Colour(CMYK) on a proper printing press (such as our yersand posters), please ensure that ALL images, text andother design elements have colours set to CMYK andDO NOT contain RGB or Pantone colours.

The rule is that RGB (three colours) is the setting orscreens / monitors, whilst CMYK (our colours) is orproper printing.

The main problem is that when the le is prepared

ready or CMYK printing, there can be a very noricablecolour shit, so all your bright reds and pinks orexample turn muddy and horrible. Most colours areachievable in CMYK, but you need the CMYK version othose colours.

The easy way to check is to simply open the documentin Photoshop and look or the inormation in the titlebar, as in the example o the Tenold logo previously.

To check and change it, open the MODE menu andit will tell you what youve got. CMYK is good. RGB isbad. The solution here is ridiculously simple. Simplychange the colour mode to CMYK and it will convertthe image. You may notice the colours change slightly.Or a lot! Either way - we can now print.

PLEASE dont nick or screengrab any images or logosrom the internet as they WILL be RGB.

FILE FORMATS.We only accept press-quality .PDF les or hi-res .jpegs,or very good but lengthy reasons. We cannot acceptdocuments supplied in a Microsot ormat, such asWord (.doc), Powerpoint (.ppt) or Publisher (.pub).

They are the tools o the devil and are not suitable ordesigning artwork or press.

Please dont send native les, just convert them toa PDF. We cant guarantee we have the sotware, orthe same version as you. This also applies to Quark,Illustrator and any other design package you can name.

EXPORTING.When youve nished ddling with your design, youllhave to export it to a ormat we can actually print.

PDF is the way to go. When exporting your le as aPDF using Indesign, ensure that you export as PRESSQUALITY (a deault setting) and i youre eelingcondent, include all the Printers Marks. These will

usually contain Crop, Bleed and Registration marks.Colour bars and page inormation are not essential.
