Despite the political and economic challenges in Africa,

people are avid for teaching and learning. The skilled body, calm character and spiritual characteristics, has provided an opportunity for Zurkhaneh global movement to introduce its moral and physical messages to the people of Africa. The first Zurkhaneh sports encounter with African athletes was attractive and interesting: great interest in learning, appropriate learning rate, discipline and sense of humor are all unforgettable memories.

***Zurkhaneh sports has been identified in the world’s eyes as fresh, vibrant, young people-friendly, fair, and universal. As the activation of the Zurkhaneh in the African continent, after Asia, Europe and the Pacific, IZSF is one more step closer to its goals; global peace, friendship, excellence and equity. A question is arising that whether the Zurkhaneh sports shall change according to regional characteristics?

In 2011, IZSF follows two major approaches; first, to enhance the continental Confederation’s activities; and second, to expand educational practices with a particular attention to Africa. Welcoming of the 1st Zurkhaneh Sports Training course in Uganda specialized for West-African countries, and the 2nd course in Zimbabwe for South-African countries showed that this sport and its spiritual messages are very interesting for the African nations. 2011:Horizons on the international Zurkhaneh Sports Federations

Movement to g l o b a l i z e zurkahneh sports

that is based on promotion of values including respect, friendship, perfection, morality, and development of peace and equality among the youth around the world pursues its development policies through three major approaches, i.e. empowered members, diversified events and cooperation with international organizations. Thanks to several years’ efforts of IZSF and other bodies’ cooperation, we are pleased that zurkahneh sports have been registered at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization,

UNESCO, as a spiritual heritage at the end of 2010. We are glad that with seven years’ activities of members in IZSF central office and other institutions, zurkahneh sports are now introduced to 62 countries and continental competitions are held as scheduled. Moreover, we hope our efforts fruit and we see the first African ZS championship hold in Mozambique in September 2011 coinciding with the 10th African games. IZSF membership policies in the international federations and bodies, on the other hand, are seriously being pursued. Accordingly, IZSF has been already a

member of TAFISA, IASI, ICSSPE. We hope to introduce zurkhaneh sports and its important message to more countries and increase the number of our members up to 62 countries.

Africa is the continent of kind people who have preserved

their spiritual virues over time. Such spiritual characteristics along with high physical ability have provided an considerble opportunity to learn and perform zurkhaneh sports. Welcoming the participant athletes in two training courses held in Uganda and Zimbabwe showed that zurkhaneh sports have good fans in Africa. If African athletes are asked about the zurkahneh sports, their answers would be interesting: zurkhaneh sports are attractive, the music boost our motivations, in addition to coordinating

the athletes.Along with organizing training courses, the African Zurkhaneh Sports Confederation seeks to register the sports at leading sporting institutions like the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa and the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa. I have been present from the early establishment process of IZSF. I am pleased with the new opportunity achieved in this year to expand zurkahneh sports in Africa and I hope to take more important steps to develop zurkhaned sports and its high values including brotherhood, respect, morality and training with

the cooperation of international zurkahneh sports federation. Through attracting important African sporting organizations, I hope to rapidly introduce and institutionalize zurkhaneh sports in Africa.

2011:IZSF activities in Africa

Year 2011 is full of activities. IZSF Calendar has

anticipated numerous training programs, competitions and cultural events. Establishment and Organization of zurkahneh sports in Africa are among the major cores of the IZSF executive calendar 2011. Africa is the second largest continent after Asia, and with its population rate more than 1 billion and 61 countries has accommodated 1/8 of total population in the world. African representatives welcomed IZSF when it was founded in 2004 in the Islamic Republic of Iran’s National Olympic and para-Olympic Committee, and some attended IZSF events, no opportunity was reached to hold training programs

and institutionalize zurkhaneh sports due to some limitations till the current year. I am pleased that a great opportunity was provided to introduce and develop zurkhaneh sports in Africa. Holding training courses and seminars and meeting with officials from Uganda, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, as well as welcoming zurkhaneh sports from African youth and officials show that IZSF should give more support to these objectives and African youth. According to two training programs, some participant athletes from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Democratic Republic D.R. Congo, Malawi and Zimbabwe, were awarded certificate grade C. I proudly declare that IZSF met requirements

for presenting Zurkhaneh sports in the 10th African games held in Sep., 2011 in Mozambique through attracting support of African sports officials, especially the Ministry of Sports and the Youth of Zimbabwe. With the cooperation of African Zurkhaneh Sports Confederation and sports officials of African countries, we hope to increase the number of our African members to 20 countries.

Pahlavani (sportsmanship) and generosity are the most important recurring features

in the East culture, literature and traditional knowledge of the Orient and especially in Persian literature. Mawlana, the great of Balkh, who is considered as the essence of knowledge, and cultural teachings of Islamic-east civilization, has frequently expressed and explained the concept of Pahlevani through several stories and tales. Mawlana was born in Balkh, a city well known for its heroes and the brave. Ibrahim Adhem is one of the stories about sportsmanship in this city. Ibrahim Adhem, king of Balkh, replaces his kingdom with Sufism and magnanimity.

Rumi does not believe that Pahlavan is powerful. For Rumi, Pahlavan is with whom the angels take peace, meaning that Pahlavan is the source of calm, authority, magnanimity and kindness. Such sportsmanship and generosity are not earthly features. Like Sufism and the mysticism, this behavior is the main attribute of God. Pahlavani can only be learned from God. In this course, teacher and guide is the Holy Prophet. For this, Pahlavani is the main religious element. It seems it is not possible to separate these two, Pahlavani with no custom and custom with no sportsmanship are

Another example is of a great champion of Khorasan, Poria Vali, and finally the largest example in Pahlavani for Mawlana is Shah Ali Murtaza.

Pahlavan is in constant fight with his soul. He has no greed and comfort. He leaves materialism, so he would be a Pahlavan that

I returned from Hajj two weeks ago. I took a vow to eulogize my master Hazrat Abbas and the nobles, when I come to the zurkhaneh. I feel this energizes athletes. I am sure when I sing about the nobles, athletes practice enthusiastically.his name is Mohamed Amin and he has a particular interest in zurkhaneh and ancient sports. He has recently returned from Mecca. Mohammad Amin was unable to participate in Europe’s zurkhaneh sports championship, because his wrist was injured before the tournament. However, he was so active in this tournament. He has recently learned to beat zurkhaneh drum and perform this practice along with the Iranian masters. But this is only the art of Mohammad Amin. He shows a special devotion to Hazrat Abbas and sings for him. Amin sings some poems with his beautiful Azeri accent, and sometimes tears appear in his eyes. About his country’s national team in Europe championships for the third time, Mohammad Amin Naghizadeh makes an interesting claim. He invites Iran to a competition and says: I have no doubt Azerbaijan Republic would be a great threat for Iranian team”.«Our team has invested a great deal on zurkhaneh sports and there are many fans in Azerbaijan. Our athletes are all talented and I am sure that with two championships in Europe, we have sounded the alarm for the Iranians. It is true that the zurkhaneh sport is a official sport of your country, but we seek to make a pattern of you and ultimately beat you!», Mohammad Amin said.

Welcoming of the 1st Zurkhaneh Sports Training course in Uganda specialized for West-African countries, and the 2nd course in Zimbabwe for South-African countries showed that this sport and its spiritual messages are very interesting for the African nations. Education in Africa will be discussed in this IZSF REVIEW.

Iranian Ambassador: Sport more enduring and popular than politics Prior to the beginning of this section, Iranian ambassador, Mohammad Pour Najaf, met with IZSF Secretary General in Harare. In the meeting, he welcomed sports activities between two nations and said: “Popularity and stability are the major differences between sports and cultural activities with political and economic affairs. These activities are important public representations”. Referring to 97% educated people in Zimbabwe, Iranian ambassador asserted that “a proper expression of a concept leads to empower and attract people. Zurkhaneh with its certain spiritual and sport concepts can grasp the youth’s interest.

Mohammad Asadi, Iranian Cultural Counselor, said in Harare: “Two reasons contribute to the success of Zurkhaneh sports in Africa. First, spiritual states of people, and their physical features”.Considering the music of Zurkhaneh, he noted: “Music has a particular position in African

life. Music and songs of master can give them more pleasure. However, it is necessary for master to sing in English language, so athletes will become more familiar with the concepts of the zurkhaneh sports by adjusting their movements, in addition to taking advantages of beats”.

First and foremost i am honored to share my ideas concerning such a great sport.Getting straight into business, i think

zurkhaneh has more advantages than disadvantages to the human body and society. As an athlete i saw quite a number of advantages which I’ll state in point form;-Zurkhaneh keeps people in shape physically as it works on all the muscles in a person›s body.-This sport can make people clear their minds from stressful things as the combination of music (drums) and exercises makes the surroundings peaceful.-Religion wise, i liked the way they respect their God and teaches other cultures and religions to do the same.-Teaches respect to elders and teaches to be humble.-Any person from any sport can do zurkhaneh.-It helps in different aspects of different people of different sporting disciplines e.g cricket its helps with the vital muscles e.g the forearm and helps with martial arts not just physically but mental strength too.-From the values of zurkhaneh and the training course we had i believe it surely builds to world peace as there is encouragement of friendship and no racial discrimination. These are just but a few advantages of the many i believe to be there. On the critic side, that is the disadvantages of zurkhaneh from the training course we had are;-There was no room for diversity in culture and the music.-There should be room for people to create their

own routines. These are the only disadvantages i saw or rather things that can be alternated.Ways of improving training courses.-Advertise; make the course public so it draws greater publicity.-advertise to the people targeted to participate in it as those who did in Harare did not know until the 1st day of the course-Proper financing of the course towards learning equipment, food and accommodation for the locals too.-make a mini tournament with reward in the end to give participants vigor to want the course.-To create opportunity for work after the course. To create work opportunities for the excellent ones-In Africa to put more African coaches on the course for communication and to avoid ignorance.-Last to make a bigger presentation on the day certificates are given out.For development they should make Zurkhaneh sports› Boards in countries that creates job opportunities for locals. Bring in coaches from Iran to guide coaches in Africa for e 1st 12months maybe.Hope to hear from you soon and looking forward to working with you. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share what i think about a great sport which is Zurkhaneh ROCKSAT!!!

Gholamreza Takhti (Persian: غالمرضا تختی, August 27, 1930 – January 7, 1968) is the most famous wrestler in Iranian history. He was most famous for his chivalrous behavior and sportsmanship, and he continues to symbolize the essence of sport to the Iranian people.Takhti was among the most famous practitioners of Varzesh-e Bastani, the famous Persian “Sport of the Heroes.” The sport included club swinging and juggling followed by submission wrestling known as Koshti Pahlavani. Varzesh-e Pahlavani was one of the formative influences of American catch wrestling.Another example of his character comes from a match in Moscow. After defeating the then-world champion

Anatoli Albul, Takhti saw the sorrow on the face of Albul’s mother. Takhti went to her and said, “I’m sorry about the result, but your son is a great wrestler.” She smiled and kissed him.In another instance, he had a match with Russian wrestler champion Alexander Medved who had an injured right knee. When Takhti found out that he was injured, he never attacked that leg. Instead, he tried to attack the other leg. He lost the match, but showed that he valued honorable behavior more than reaching victory. Takhti was found dead in his hotel room on January 7, 1968. As a national hero his funeral drew hundreds of thousands of mourners.
