12th Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Conference – RESISTANCE – Rotterdam School of Management 22 – 24 July 2019

Welcome note

Dear EDI 2019 participants,

On behalf of the EDI Organizing Committee, it is a pleasure to welcome you to the 12th

International Conference on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at the Rotterdam School of

Management, Erasmus University, The Netherlands. We are delighted to host this event at

our University, and we have done our best to make the three days of the conference

inspiring and thought-stimulating. In line with the previous EDI conferences, we intend to

offer a lively forum for scholarly debates as well as a pleasant setting for socializing, with the

conference dinner taking place on 23 July 2019 at 19:00 at Zalmhuis restaurant

During this EDI conference we will discuss resistance to Equality, Diversity & Inclusion from a

transdisciplinary and multi-level perspective. In management literature, most authors define

resistance as “a restraining force moving in direction of maintaining the status quo” (Lewin

as cited in Piderit, 2000, p.419). Resistance and backlash to equality, diversity & inclusion

have been notably growing in recent years. Resistance can manifest in different ways and on

different levels. On the micro level resistance manifests with the (non-) acceptance of social

change by the individual. On the meso level the focus is on how diversity

resistance manifests within organizational settings. Resistance on the macro level may

manifest at the level of a wider discourse on issues around equality, diversity & inclusion,

such as in the form of white male backlash. Lastly, resistance can be passive, hidden or

active. Resistance as the conference theme for 2019 provides us a broad lens through which

to investigate global, national, organisational and individual challenges for equality, diversity

and inclusion.

Our thanks go to the members of the scientific and of the organizing committees who have

worked hard in order to make this conference happen. In particular we would like to thank

the three key note speakers, Prof. Kecia M. Thomas, Prof. Lena Knappert and Prof. Dirk van

Dierendonck for accepting our invitation. And of course, we would also like to thank

everyone who is presenting papers and attending the conference. Our wish is to make EDI

2019 a convivial and enjoyable Conference, with plenty of opportunities to debate, interact,

and network. We hope you have a wonderful time in Rotterdam.

Dr Joana Vassilopoulou

In this panel, 4 D&I scholars will make a short presentation on how resistance and backlash manifest in the workplace, organizations, and society. Diversity champions attract backlash when they advocate for the fair treatment and the rights of minority groups. In the US, dominant group members who feel threatened will seek to establish their privilege and dominance when minority groups assert their rights. Individuals, particularly those with multiple stigmatized identities, experience adversity and resistance in the workplace when they attempt to advance their careers. An influx of refugees and migrants also attract backlash affecting how EDI
