National Reconciliation Week- May 27 to June 3 National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to contribute to building a reconciled Australia. National Reconciliation Week started as the Week of Prayer for Reconciliation in 1993 and was supported by Australia’s major religious groups. Under the guidance of the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation (now Reconciliation Australia), it evolved into the week-long celebration that it is today. Every year, it is held between two significant milestones in Australia’s history, May 27 and June 3. May 27 is the anniversary of the 1967 referendum in which more than 90 per cent of Australians voted ‘Yes’ to count Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the census and give the Australian Government the power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The day before National Reconciliation Week, 26 May, is National Sorry Day, which was first held in Sydney in 1998 and is now commemorated nationally to remember and honour the Stolen Generations. June 3 marks the historic 1992 Mabo decision in which the High Court of Australia recognised native title – the recognition that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights over their lands did survive British colonisation. The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2014 is Let’s Walk the Talk, so Australians across the nation can start putting their words into action. Save the Date 17-18 September Preparations for our school musical have begun under the brilliance of our Production Manager Mrs O’Neill and her Musical Committee. This year’s musical will involve students in every class P-6 and is guaranteed to excite and delight our community once again. Further information will be provided later next term however please mark the show dates 17-18 September in your calendar. Jennifer Parke A message from Reading Recovery Our students in Year 1 currently undertaking the Reading Recovery program have been working very hard this semester. Each day in their lesson students write a short story and we would just like to share with you some of their wonderful work. Today is a rainy day and I am going to jump in the big puddles. (Allegra Caldwell) My favourite dinner to have at home is cheesy pies and gems. (Byron Mulheron) I gave Bella a bone because she was being good. (Mia Simon) Our class was digging in the garden to find earth worms. (Emily Jarvis) Max can ride his bike with no little wheels. (Kallan Milton) On Sunday it will be Mother’s Day and I will get mum a present. (Myles Lees) Max rode his bike on the grass and he came off, he should have ridden on the path. (Jacob Ehrenreiter) Today I am going to buy mum a present because I love her. (Paige Herrmann) Keep up the great work! Thank you Mr Schiaffi & Miss Tongue

It is a buzzing hive of activity in our kindergarten classrooms. We are enjoying learning about dinosaurs, especially T Rex. Students have been looking a dinosaur fossils, how dinosaurs lived, how they ate and how they became extinct. As part of our English program we are focussing on books by the well known author Pamela Allen. Students can include these books on their Premiers Reading Challenge list. Please see your child’s teacher for details. Last week Kindergarten enjoyed a visit from Margo and her puppets. Margo taught the children the importance of having healthy teeth and how to brush carefully. Students enjoyed dressing up as dentists to examine the puppets teeth. Thanks to Margo and Pacific Smiles for a great visit. On Friday at 9:15 am, Kinder Orange will be hosting our assembly. All parents welcome.

1OT - Could parents/carers please send in a plastic cliplock for your child’s personal headphones to be kept in to help avoid tangles. Also speeches are occurring this week and next. If your child wants to speak about a topic not listed that is fine. Thank you Mrs O’Toole

Stage 2 have had a wonderful time taking skit photos and making a special Mothers’ Day presentation for all our mums who attended the special assem-bly in Week 2. Students took a funny song and designed sets that would match the lyrics to show our mums some of the great things that children can do just to remind you how fantastic it is to be a parent.

Our amazing Year 3 students have also had another big week last week with their NAPLAN testing. They did an excellent job and were rewarded for all their hard work with a small pack of goodies each day to reward their efforts.

We would also like to invite our parents to come along to our whole school assembly next Friday 30 May where we will be showcasing our fantastic dra-ma skills as part of our Stage 2 presentation for the school. You will preview just a small snippet of the amazing things that happen in our stage.
