QUEENSLAND BUDGETS STRUGGLINGUNDER COVID-19 BURDEN

New data has revealed 80 percent of Queenslanders need to overhaul their household budget if they're to survive the economic pressure of the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting advice from RACQ Bank on the best ways to tackle the period ahead.

RACQ spokesperson Lucinda Ross said member research showed Queenslanders continued to feel the brunt of the ongoing economic challenges, with most having to review and cut back on their household expenses to get by.

"More than 40 percent of our members say their income has been impacted by COVID-19 and they're most concerned about managing their home loan repayments," Ms Ross said.

"These are really worrying stats because we know the financial impact of this crisis will last much longer than community restrictions.

"For many of us, if we lost our job or lost hours, just a few weeks without our regular income can put us back months in our mortgage repayments."

Ms Ross said the research also revealed concerns about superannuation, investments and household debt rated as the top issues which kept Queenslanders awake at night.

"We've seen huge changes in global markets which is understandably making many anxious about how safe or secure their retirement savings are," she said.

"With added pressure on household budgets, some families are starting to struggle with mounting debt. It's really important right now no one makes financial decisions in a rushed manner.

"If you're struggling to meet your repayments or are worried about your circumstances, reach out to your lender, superannuation fund, financial advisor or contact the National Debt Helpline - a free service for all Australians available on 1800 007 007."

STOP DRIVE WARNING FOR HUNDREDS OF QUEENSLAND VEHICLES Car manufacturers have warned there are hundreds of vehicle owners in Queensland who should stop driving their vehicles immediately because of high-risk faulty Takata airbags. Vehicle owners and their passengers are being unnecessarily exposed to the risk of death or serious injury because the vehicles have not had faulty airbags replaced. Federa l Chamber o f Au tomot i ve Industries chief executive, Tony Weber, said there were 1,798 ai rbags in Queensland of the critical Alpha and critical non-Alpha type. "These are the worst of the worst," Mr Weber said. "They have been declared critical for a very important reason – they are high-risk and can kill vehicle drivers and occupants. Any vehicle with critical Alpha or critical non-Alpha type airbags should not be driven at all." Mr Weber said it was alarming so many owners of vehicles representing such a significant public safety risk had not arranged to have the faulty airbags r e p l a c e d . T h e y a l s o r i s k e d t h e cancellation of their vehicle registrations. "This is not a story about one or two lost vehicles in Australia," he said. "We are talking about hundreds of vehicles – some of them with more than one faulty airbag. There would be a traffic jam if they all descended on George Street, Brisbane." Mr Weber said car manufacturers will

arrange to promptly collect any of these vehicles and replace the faulty airbags free of charge. The high-risk airbags are among nearly 39,200 faulty airbags in vehicles in Queensland that still need to be replaced as part of an ACCC-mandated compulsory recall. "The industry has already replaced 743,000 faulty airbags in Queensland. This represents 95 per cent of affected airbags in the state," Mr Weber said. "However, it's not enough. We need to urgently get the outstanding vehicles into dealership workshops." On a national basis, the industry has rectified

2.64 million vehicles with 3.61 million faulty Takata airbags.

Vehicle owners should promptly check the recall status of their vehicles by using the automotive industry's Takata airbag recall website www.ismyairbagsafe.com.au and by taking action to arrange for the free rectification of any affected vehicles.

"It's really a very simple check. Just go to the website and enter your vehicle's registration number and state or territory. You can also check by texting TAKATA to 0487 AIRBAG (247 224)," Mr Weber said.

KIDS HELPLINE: CHILDREN IN CRISIS AN EMERGING REALITYOF THE COVID-19 PANDEMICKids Helpline, a service of yourtown, says contacts about child abuse and suicidal concerns have spiked in the past four months during the coronavirus crisis.

yourtown Chief Executive Officer Tracy Adams, revealed counsellors actioned an increased 43% emergency 'duty of care' interventions, in the period 1st January to 30th April 2020, where counsellors had to contact emergency services or another agency to protect children and young people who were at imminent risk of significant harm, when compared to the same period last year.

Since the start of 2020, there has also been a 17% increase in emergency 'duty of care' interventions in response to a young person's immediate intent to enact suicide.

“Disturbingly that's 138 Suicide prevention interventions in the first four months of 2020 vs. 118 in 2019; Child Abuse Duty of Care interventions sit at 136 a vs. 95 for the same period last year,” said Ms Adams. Child abuse, of all duty of care interventions in 2020, has overtaken suicide concerns as the number one reason Kids Helpline counsellors enact 'duty of care' emergency interventions. Highlighting the vulnerability of children and young people during a time community stress and change.

“The intensity of support required by young people contact ing Kids Help l ine for counselling is increasing. Nationally, the demand for Kids Helpline during the month of April was 49% higher with 37,672 attempts (phone, web, email) than in April 2019.

This level of demand in April 2020 has spiked since our 40% increase in demand registered in March 2020,” said Ms Adams.

“Whilst it remains unclear when the surge in demand might ease, Kids Helpline has sought to increase its capacity to respond through partnership with Governments and the Community. This has directly enabled increasing the number of counsellors available as well as the development of additional self-help resources. We have been safeguarding children for the past 29 years and we remain committed to supporting children and young people not only through these turbulent times but into the future,” said Ms Adams.

As Australia's only national 24/7 counselling and support service specifically for children and young people aged 5 to 25 years – free c a l l 1 8 0 0 5 5 1 8 0 0 o r o n l i n e a t www.k idshelp l ine.com.au Facebook: @kidshelpline, Insta @kidshelplineau, Twitter

Hi Sherrie,

I feel even using the term “work wife” or “work husband” is crossing appropriate boundaries. Your relationship should only have two people in it, not three. If a person feels that there is a switching from one spouse to another when leaving for work, the relationship is in danger. It's also not a good idea to listen to your family's opinion on what you should do, even if they are right, as they are stake holders in your life and this makes their advice bias. However, this doesn't mean that you should put up and shut up. The behavour you term 'Losing my mind” is achieving nothing.

I suggest that you get proactive rather than reactive.

I would calmly tell him that his behaviours are damaging the relationship and that if it continues it will get to the point of no repair. You were well within your rights to tell this lady to go away and mind her own business and many would have taken it further so he should be grateful that you did not cause a scene. This person can't know the impact your miscarriage has had on you or her sister for that matter, and she needs to learn some respect for people suffering grief and loss.

Work spouse relationships can mimic a marriage. Close bonds often form with the people who know the most about us and if he is oversharing his personal life, he may be getting too close. This closeness can lead to emotional and physical infidelity.

It's been my experience that people are often more honest with people they call their work spouses because there are no rea l consequences. They can say they stuffed up, s p e n t o r d r a n k t o o m u c h , a c t e d inappropriately at a party and so on and this safe disclosure can strengthen the bond even more. Often this closeness can have this interloper interfering in the marriage by giving unqualified and bias advice. She may tell him to do this or say that and become a sort of silent partner in your relationship. I suggest telling him that he has broken your trust and increased your grief over your lost child and this will no longer be tolerated.

Remind him that you and his child should be his priority and ask him to come to relationship counselling and say that at this stage, you are willing to work on things. However, you are not willing to let things continue as they are with his immature and irresponsible behaviours or with this interloper in your marriage.

Hello Leonie,

Here is some background about my problem. I am 32 and have a 14 month old little girl. I am taking a leave of absence for another year to spend time with my daughter. My husband works for a big food chain and I'm upset with a woman that is constantly rostered with him, who seems to have him more in her life than I have him in mine. He calls her is 'work wife' and I just can't stand this. When I lose my mind over it, which is often, he says I'm being childish and to get over myself. I am now thinking of leaving because I just found out that he told this woman about our miscarriage two years ago and we haven't even told all of our families. It was a dark and sad time and the grief was very personal and I believed we shared the sacredness of this tragedy. But no, she had the gall to ambush me while I was getting groceries and said she knows how I feel because her sister lost a baby too. I kept my composure and told her to go away and mind her own business, left my trolley and cried all the way home. He's now upset that I upset her and not at all upset about what he has done. Mum and Dad think he's a selfish lost cause and now I don't know how to make him change. Can you talk about this please?

Thanks for reading, Sherrie

‘till next week. Leonie

EDGE LAUNCHES VIRTUAL AT HOME EARLY LEARNINGFOR PRE-SCHOOLERS

SEQ based Edge Early Learning, is one of the first to launch its earlylearning@home program for children unable to attend its centres, providing an interactive and engaging source of activities and resources to keep little minds busy.

With many families self-isolating or unable to attend their local Edge Early Learning childcare centre, the program has been designed by educators to be interactive, engaging and educational for children and

families.

Edge Early Learning CEO, Annie Bryce, said the program is a fantastic way to continue children’s early learning and development during these uncertain times.

“ W e ’ v e l a u n c h e d t h e earlylearning@home program to ensure that our families and children have continued access to high quality education programs and can maintain authent ic connect ions with their educators during these times,” she said.

“Our program provides opportunities for parents to play and learn alongside their children with an array of education plans, in te ract ive v ideos fea tur ing our educators, downloadable content and printable resources.”

Ms Bryce said that regular activity and familiar faces are a key element to keeping little hands and minds busy, while maintaining some semblance of routine in the household for smaller ages.

“Some of the activities include story time, singalongs, arts and crafts projects you can do from home, language and cultural experiences and active movement videos such as yoga. These are shared daily and are available on demand through our Storypark app,” she said.

“In addition to providing quality content, this type of virtual learning is a great sanity-provider for parents

who are juggling quite a lot in their homes at this time.”

Available to families enrolled at any of the 16 Edge Early Learning centres across the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Ipswich, content pieces from the education program will also be published online for the wider community across the week.

Families can stay in touch and up to date on the application, by commenting and engaging with educators from their local centre.

“We have already received an incredible response from families since rolling out the programs, and it’s been great to see the engagement from families and educators during what is a surreal time for us all,” said Annie.

(recipe inspired by Arnott’s Iced VoVo and adapted for home bakers)ICED VOVO INSPIRED HEARTSPrep time: 10 minsCook time: 18 minsMakes: 36 biscuits

INGREDIENTSBiscuit180g unsalted butter softened½ cup (75g) soft icing sugar½ tsp salt2 cups (300g) plain flourRoyal Icing1 large egg white1½ cups (200g) icing sugar1 tsp vanilla extract1 tsp glucose syrup1-2 drops pillar box red colouring½ cup raspberry jam½ cup desiccated coconutExtra Baking ItemsHeart-shaped cutter (optional)Piping bag and nozzle (optional)

METHODBiscuitStep 1Pre-heat fan-forced oven to 160°C. Line 2 baking trays with baking paper.Step 2Using an electric mixer, beat the butter, icing sugar and salt for 2 mins or until pale and creamy. Sift the flour into the butter mixture and mix on low speed until combined.Step 3Place half the mixture between baking paper

and roll out to approx. 5 mm thickness. Using a 6cm heart-shaped cutter, cut out biscuits, transfer to baking sheets. Repeat rolling and cutting heart shapes with remaining mixture, re-rolling scrap dough to make more hearts.

Step 4Bake for 16-18 minutes or when biscuits start to turn golden. Leave on the tray to cool.

Royal Icing

Step 1Place egg white in a clean mixing bowl and mix on low speed with the whisk attachment until the whites begin to break up. Gradually add the icing sugar, vanilla and glucose, whisking until combined and glossy. If the mixture is too stiff, add a teaspoon of water to loosen it up but ensure it isn’t too runny as it will slide off the biscuit. It should form a smooth surface. Add your colour and stir until combined. Cover surface of icing with cling wrap until ready to use to prevent the icing going hard.

Step 2Place a small round tip (we used a no2 nozzle) and fill your piping bag full of icing. Do not overfill your bag. Fill another piping bag with raspberry jam.

Step 3Pipe a jam strip down the centre of the heart biscuit and pipe pink icing around the edges before filling in the remainder of the heart with icing.

Step 4Sprinkle with coconut. Place iced biscuits in a single layer of an airtight container to set overnight.

TipsBe very light handed when adding your colour to ensure a soft pink colour

If you don’t have a piping bag, you can use a snap-lock bag and snip the corner off

Biscuits can be made into any shape, including the traditional rectangle

You can go to Arnott’s website to grab more recipes of their famous biscuits.
