    The Cruellest Month

April what a marvellous time. Waking up from a small and suffocating life in winter tothe potential and rising energy of spring. The yard needs putting in order and where did I putall those notes for this years garden plan? I cant wait to get out there in the fresh air andstart digging around. What variety of tomatoes this year? How about garlic and basil? Fruittrees for sure and more day lilies. Time to clean out the garage.

Oops. Forgot that I still have to do the bookkeeping for the income tax. Where is all thatstuff? Probably in the big bag under the desk, well, most of it is anyway. Id better do thatbefore I open the garden catalogues. But I cant launch into all those numbers without a cup

of tea and a little soft music to keep me calm. Aspirin, definitely aspirin. Deep breaths.Forms, forms, forms. My mind keeps drifting off to more enticing places like sitting in thesun or going to a garden nursery

Time to clean out the closets and put away most of the winter clothes. More t-shirts andsummer dresses. Most of it actually looks pretty tired. I could sure use something new. Onthe other hand I need to get the old winter body back in shape again. If I wasnt sorting outtax forms I could go out for a walk and start to limber up a little. If I had organized all thesepapers throughout the year Id be way ahead now. Where did I put that envelope of receiptsanyway?

They cant be serious! Calculate the amount on line 32. Multiply line 32 by line 33. Addlines 34 and 35. Enter the amount on line 36 and add to get line 39. Add lines 40 to 43. Sub-tract line 44 from line 33 (unless negative). Enter the final amount on line 55 on line 420 ofthe return. I can feel my teeth clinching and my enamel cracking. This seems to be going incircles. Time for a break and another cup of tea. Maybe some chocolate, too. Why do myshoulders feel so tense?

Its now after dinner time. The table is littered with odd sized pieces if paper. I can enter allthis in the computer program and have done with it if I can just figure out how it works. Butthen Ill have to check it all again anyway. Hours are slipping by and Im still looking forthose tax slips I couldnt find yesterday. Im at the point where Id pay the government any-thing just to go away and leave me alone. Ill never live long enough to get to the garden!

April the cruellest month. I should have stayed soundly asleep until May. JK

Claiming the First Time Home Buyers Tax Credit

Buying a home is the largest single purchase most Canadians will ever make. If you boughtyour first home in the last year, youll no doubt welcome this tax-reducer: the First TimeHome Buyers Tax Credit (FTHTBC).

The basics. This new tax credit is intended to help offset closing costs for certain home buy-ers who acquired a qualifying home after January 27, 2009. The tax credit is calculated bymultiplying the lowest income tax rate for the year (15% in 2009) by $5,000 meaning thequalifying home buyers can claim $750 on their 2009 tax return.

You and/or your spouse/common law partner are eligible for the credit if you bought a quali-fying home after January 27, 2009 and neither of you have owned or lived in another homeeither in the year of purchase or in any of the four preceding years.

Qualifying home. Your new home must be located in Canada and legally registered in yourand/or your spouses/ common law partners name. It can be an existing home or a home un-der construction. Any of these housing types qualify: single family, semi-detached, town-house, mobile home, condo unit, an apartment in a duplex, triplex, fourplex or larger apart-ment building. A co-op unit also qualifies if you have a share in the co-op that entitles you topossess, and have an equity interest in, the housing unit. It does not qualify if your share pro-vides only the right to tenancy.

As well, you must intend to occupy the home as your principal residence no later than oneyear after you buy it.

Making your claim. Either you or your spouse/common law partner can claim the credit oryou can share the creditbut the combined total of your claims cannot exceed $750.

You can claim the $750 without being a first time home buyerif you are disabled or purchasethe home for a relative who is disabled, and the home is better suited to the personal needs orcare of that person.

If you currently participate in the existing Home Buyers Plan, your First Time HomeBuyers claim will not affect your eligibility for that plan.

You dont have to send any supporting documents with your tax return but be sure to keepthe information on file in case the CRA requests it.

Enjoying your first home is a terrific experienceand saving a few additional tax dollars ispretty good, too. Make sure you get the most from your new life and every dollar you earn orinvest by getting the best possible financial advice from your professional advisor.

    Synopsis: The Hurt Locker

Winner of 6 Oscars, The Hurt Lockeris ariveting portrait of courage under fire ofsome of the militarys greatest heroes: thetechnicians of the bomb squad; who vol-unteer to challenge the odds and save livesin some of the worlds most dangerousplaces. The film is based on first-handobservations of journalist and screen-

writer, Mark Boal, who was embeddedwith a special bomb unit in Iraq.

Bravo Company loses their team leaderduring a demolition assignment and StaffSergeant William James (Jeremy Renner)takes over. The three man team is depend-ent on each other but Williams is bothaggressive and highly independent, whichincreases the pressure and danger for histeammates. At the end of their tour, themen struggle to complete their assign-ments in the turmoil of Baghdad wherethey dont understand the language, the

culture, or the people and cant trust any-thing but their own judgement. A probinglook at the soul numbing rigors and po-tent allure of the modern battlefield.

Ray Kroc opened the firstnew fast-food restaurantin the famous chain in

Des Plains, Illinois on April 15, 1955.Burgers were 15. That was before thelegendary Big Mac hit the street in 1967at a whopping 45.

At 52, Kroc invested his entire life sav-

ings to become the exclusive distributorof a brand of milk shake maker. His big-gest customers owned a hamburger standin California. When he went to see theplace with his own eyes he was amazedby their turnover and talked them intoletting him franchise the McDonaldsbusiness.

The former Dire Straits guitarist and leadvocalist Mark Knopfler released a songabout Ray Kroc on his 2004 album Shan-gri-La. It was inspired by Ray Kroc'sautobiography Grinding It Out and thestarting of McDonald's, using many ofMr. Kroc's exact words: "Kroc style, boom like that."

April 15:National Contest ofPaso Horses in Peru

The Paso Fino is anaturally-gaited lighthorse breed dating back to horses importedto the Caribbean from Spain. Pasos areprized for their smooth, natural, four beat, lateral ambling gait called the paso llano. They neither gallop nor trot. Pasos are usedin many disciplines, but are especially popu-lar for trail riding. In the United States thereare two main groups of horses that are popu-larly called "Paso Fino:" One originated inPuerto Rico and one in Columbia. Thoughfrom similar Spanish ancestors, the twogroups developed independently of one an-other in their home nations.

The gait supplies none of the vertical bouncethat is characteristic of the trot. It is also verystable, as the execution of the gait means

there are always two, and sometimes three, feet on the ground. Because the rider feels nostrain or jolt, these gaited horses are oftenpopular with riders who have back trouble.
