CONTENTSWELCOMEEach new brochure brings with it a challenge - what to say here! As always, weve worked

hard to bring together a full programme of entertainment, and Im confident that youll find

something in these pages for you whether you love music, drama, comedy, opera or

    anything in between.

Although it starts in 2009, our giant family panto continues into the second week of

January. This year we are delighted to welcomeJack and the Beanstalk , a traditional family

panto written by a BAFTA Award winning team. Its brimming full of slapstick, giant special

effects and outlandish adventure! You can find out more on P4

Later in January, some of the brightest and best known talents on the international dance

scene join forces for the distinctly Scottish Off Kilter(P6-7). Off Kilter brings choreographers

such as Mark Morris (Mark Morris Dance), Ashley Page (Scottish Ballet) and Frank

McConnell (plan B) together with supremely talented dancers, live music and DJs.

With music from Beethoven to Burns, and Martyn Bennett to Dolphin Boy, its certainto be like nothing youve seen before. Were delighted to have managed to bring this

    show to Inverness

Last February saw the amazing Sunshine on Leith come to Inverness this February we

welcome the timeless tale of two children separated at birth Willie RussellsBlood

Brothers (P8-9) is one of the best loved and longest running shows in the West End. Tickets

are already in high demand for this classic British musical. Youll kick yourself if you miss it!

If youre the dramatic type, weve got a fabulous new interpretation of The Government

Inspector(P21), directed Gerry Mulgrew, plus two brand new shows from The National

    Theatre of Scotland (P22).

Highland audiences seem to have an almost insatiable appetite for comedy. Maybe its the

weather, or maybe we just like to laugh! Youre in for a treat this spring from the likes of

Katzenjammer (P55), Mark Little in Defending the Caveman (P56), and the hilarious Craig Hill

(P57), plus youll see some very special On Sale Now events coming later in the year.

Well also welcome Eden Court favouritesScottish Ballet (P05 & 11) and Scottish Opera (P18

& 19), plus well see the return of a couple of smashing shows from last year! I hope that

youll join me in looking forward to a successful 2010 and beyond for Eden Court.

    Best wishes,

    Colin Marr

purists, and by those who just love the beauty of their movement.

This visit sees Scotlands National Contemporary Dance Company

bring two brand new works to Inverness in a doublebill of dancewhich explores the human condition, and what it is to be alive in the

    world today.

NQR* is a three way collaboration by SDTs Artistic Director, Janet

Smith, SDTs Dance Agent for Change Caroline Bowditch and Marc

Brew, SDTs Associate Director Fellow. The piece offers the

audience a chance to look at and think differently about difference. It

examines the irrepressible eccentricities that defy our attempts to

    fit into the mould.

The Life and Times of Girl A by Ben Duke is a piece about a woman

who is trying to tell us something important about what is going on

right now. What she needs is a film crew and a financier, what she

has is a stage and some dancers. This is a piece about moments of

crisis, when what we all need to do is to use fewer words to say

    more.

If you like your music melodious and big-hearted, with

more than a hint of folk influence, then this evenings

repertoire is for you. Brahms Serenades include some of

his most immediately appealing music. Thierry Fischer

deftly complements the First Serenade with works by the

two composers who strongly influenced Brahms at the

    time of its writing.

The programme opens with Haydn's March for the Royal

Society of Musicians, before bright young Latvian violinist

Baiba Skride takes the solo in Mozart's Concerto No 5 in

A 'Turkish'. Brahms' jolly Serenade No. 1 closes this

Our first appointment for 2010 is with the world-renowned

BBC SSO and British-born conductor Andrew Manze.Andrew Manze is a passionate and articulate advocate of

early music. As a vi olinist he specialises in repertoire from

1610 to 1830. As a conductor, Manze is in great demand

among period and modern-instrument orchestras around

the world. He also teaches, edits and writes about music,

as well as broadcasting regularly on radio and television.

He is a presenter of BBC radio's Early Music Show, and has

established a reputation as one of t he most stimulating and

    energetic conductors of his generation.

Here he opens and closes the programme with works by

Brahms. The Tragic Overture, composed in 1880, has no

particular drama in mind, but perhaps evokes the mood of

high tragedy in general. The shadow of Beethoven loomed

heavily over Brahms, resulting in the 15-year gestation of

his First Symphony, only finished in his early forties - but

what a masterpi ece. To complete the evening Stella

McCracken, principal oboe with the BBC SSO, plays

    Mozarts sublime Oboe Concerto.

EMPIRE THEATRESchoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire is nothing short of a

music theatre landmark. A strikingly significant work, it

launched the career of the Hebrides Ensemble some

twenty years ago. Awestruck by its originality,

Stravinsky hailed it 'the solar plexus of the 20th

    century'.

Pierrot is intoxicated by the moon. Alone in his disturbed

and insular world, he spirals into a violent nightmare

dominated by dark poetic imagery, descending further

into murderous and violent thoughts before returning

home, once more transfixed by the moonlight.

This programme includes works by Chopin, Debussy,

Beamish and a brand new commission by young

    Scottish composer Helen Grime.

Sung in Italian with English supertitles

This iconic opera tells the story of the love

affair between Mimi and the struggling

    writer Rodolfo. Tony award-winning director

    Stewart Laing presents a much-loved

traditional tale in a contemporary context -the exciting modern art scene of 21st

    century New York.

Young artists, living and working in stark

studio apartments, turn loft spaces into art

galleries. When Rodolfo sees Mimi for the

first time, they fall for each other instantly -

but the course of true love rarely runs

    smoothly. Encompassing dramatic passion

and the pain of being young, poor and in

    love, Puccinis whirling melodic score

moves from revelry to romance as it carries

the story toward its tragic conclusion.

Young Irish soprano Celine Byrne and

French tenor Avi Klemberg make their

Its a play written in Arial rather than

Times New Roman if you know what we

mean. The characters are bright, fizzy

and fast and on a journey heading for a

    great big unabashed, get-it-right-up-ye

    finale.

I was thinking of going out into the

playground, walking up to Fiona Grant,

shoving my ring right into her wee pig-

Douglas Maxwell (Decky Does a Bronco,

Mancub) is the writer who refuses to

grow up. This is what he says:

My plays are for my friends. They're

intelligent people, clued up and skilled,

they just don't go to the theatre. Films,

music, novels, sport yes of course, buttheatre's not for them. But I keep them

in mind when I write because should they

go to a play, I'd hope to Christ they'd go

    to see one of mine.

Maggie Brodie has been drafted back

Rosie is six, a new intake, and

    refusing to speak. Maggies anger

Two instantly recognisable characters: Stan's crying face

and his explosive hair...Ollie's long-suffering camera look

and his tie-twiddle ...and, of course, the iconic bowler hats.

Emerging from vaudeville, music hall and early silent

comedies, Laurel and Hardy formed an enduring

partnership, crafting their films with love and attention -

and clearly having fun. Audiences shared that fun and

that love, and continue to do so even now, 75 years

    after their heyday.

Laurel & Hardy lifts the bowler hats of two

charming and witty men to take a look at their

lives and loves and offers a fascinating insight into

    their off-screen relationship and personal

heartaches. With some of their finest comedy routines,

musical numbers, dance and slapstick, the charm and wit of

Stan and Ollie are reborn in this warm and affectionate look

at the most successful and prolific comedy team in screen

    history.

Tom McGrath, one of Scotland's foremost playwrights, died

    in 2009.

This production is a tribute to Tom and a celebration of life,

    love and friendship.

Sometimes we have to believe in the impossible.

What if you lived in the middle of nowhere?

What if your dad spent all day searching for something he

    might never find?

What if your mum dreamed of living on the other side of the

    world?

And what if your sister was a fruit-loop who spent all day

    playing with two invisible friends?

12 year-old Ashmol lives in the Australian outback with his

mum, dad and his little sister Kellyanne and her two

    invisible friends Pobby and Dingan.

One day, Pobby and Dingan disappear. At first Ashmol ishappy that the imaginary friends are out of his life, but

Kellyanne becomes sick. The longer Pobby a nd Dingan are

lost, the sicker Kellyanne becomes. Finally Ashmol decides

that there is only one thing to do: he must find Pobby and

    Dingan.

Pobby and Dingan is a heartbreaking, heart-warming,

beautiful contemporary tale about the possibility of dreams,

the preciousness of hope and how, sometimes, we have to

    believe in the impossible.

    32 MUSICAL

Over the Rainbow is an award-winning musical that tells

the life story of this legendary artist, charting her life in

dramatic scenes, with stunning live renditions of her

music including a haunting interpretation of

    Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

Before she died at the tender age of 33, Eva Cassidy wasunknown outside the USA, but became posthumously

famous having been championed by Terry Wogan. Her

music soon topped the album charts in the UK, Europe

    and Australia.

This show pays a genuine and heartfelt tribute to a true

artist who was not interested in fame and fortune, but

wanted nothing more than to create beautiful music.

From its first performance in 2004, Over the Rainbow,

has played to sell-out houses, and received standing

ovations throughout the UK and Europe.

You are invited aboard the Royal Mail Ship Titanic on her maiden voyage from

Southampton to America. Enjoy the sights, sounds and splendour of the

finest, largest and strongest ship in the world. The Ship of Dreams.

The company portray the lives of the officers, passengers and crew as they set

sail on an adventure of a lifetime aboard RMS Titanic. Watch how the captain

along with his staff and crew deal with various situations i ncluding classrivalry and deal with the devastation of the fateful collision with the iceberg.

The ship Titanic is not merely the background of the show but is the pivotal

central character of this 1997 Tony Award-winning musical where you visit the

Boiler Room, Bridge, Radio Room, First and Third Class quarters, Promenade

    deck, Crows-nest and the Lifeboats.

The show is accompanied by a wonderfully evocative score, witty and

emotional dialogue, authentic costumes from the era and a magnificent set.

This is a show not to be missed!!!

Were delighted to welcome back the Inverness

Fiddlers, who will once again be joined by fellow

enthusiasts from all over Scotland; forming an

orchestra of around 100 players to perform a varied

program of traditional music from Scotland and

beyond. The Fiddlers Rally provides both a visual and

a musical spectacle since the performers are tartan-

    clad for this musical highlight.

This year the Inverness Fiddlers are delighted to

introduce two very talented young guest artists to our

Eden Court audience. Siobhan Miller is a fine youngtraditional singer from Penicuik near Edinburgh. She

is an emerging talent on the Scottish folk scene and

has appeared with acclaimed band Jock Tamson's

Bairns. Hannah Fisher is a very talented fiddler from

Dunkeld in Perthshire. Hannah is a pupil of Pete

Clark and an emerging star on the fiddle scene.

Seats for the Fiddlers Rally are sure to be much in

demand so you are recommended as always to secure

Fiddlers Bid are one of the most dynamic and exciting musical

acts to emerge from Shetland. Since 1991 Fiddlers Bid have taken

the fiddle tradition to new heights and in many new and exciting

directions, releasing a string of internationally acclaimed albums

    along the way.

Fiddlers Bid are four of Shetlands most vibrant fiddle players, who

link together with almost telepathic precision, while the band also

sports an engine room rhythm section of bass, piano and guitar to

compliment this ~ not to mention probably Scotlands finest and

most dynamic clarsach player into the bargain.
