This lesson will do two things. First it will introduce the key vocabulary and what those terms mean. Lastly, is to read through text with those terms in them. We will reading Houghton Mifflin Social Studies; School and Family Unit 1 Core lesson 3 pg. 44-47

NV State Social Studies Standards

C13.1.1 Identify and follow classroom and school rules that guide behavior and resolve conflicts.

C13.1.2 Identify an individual’s rights within the classroom.

C13.1.3 Participate in class decision-making, i.e., individual responsibilities in the classroom and school.

Student-Friendly Standards

C13.1.1 I can know the classroom rules and follow them.

C13.1.2 I can know what I can do in the classroom.

C13.1.3 I can do what is asked of me.

Materials:

Per student: Houghton Mifflin Social Studies; School & Family Unit 1, Core Lesson 3 pg. 44 – 47

This lesson will compare and contrast between student and parents/guardians. The students will be able to see what they have in common and what is different about each other.

This lesson will be about people who work in our community. From Doctors, police officers, nurses, firefighters, even our military men.

H3.1.3 Identify and describe occupations in the community that help people, i.e., police officers, fire fighters, and nurses.

Student-Friendly Standards

H3.1.3 I can know what people do for work in the community that help people. For example: police officers, fire fighters, and nurses.

Materials

Pictures of community helpers

Information on the community helpers you choose to use.

This lesson is about how students can be part of the community now and to do community service. They will be doing it at the school, by cleaning up the school grounds.

This lesson is a visitation field trip where fire fighters and a police officer comes into the classroom/school to present what they do to help out in the community and following rules are important.

NV State Social Studies Standards

C13.1.1 Identify and follow classroom and school rules that guide behavior and resolve conflicts

H3.1.3 Identify and describe occupations in the community that help people, i.e., police officers, fire fighters, and nurses.

Student-Friendly Standards

C13.1.1 I can follow the rules that have been given to me after learning about the importance of rules and laws.

H3.1.3 I can know who can help me if needed by these community helpers.

Making arrangements with the fire department and police department to come to the school and spend 25 minutes per group discussing what they do for the community and the importance of following rules, no matter who gives them.

See if they can bring a fire truck and/or police car.
