Identify & discuss what a map key is and why it is important. Introduce vocabulary that will come up during the dissuasion and video.2. As a class we will discuss and use the handout map to identify what a key is and

    why it is important.

    3. We will then watch a short video that talks about reading a map and tells us what a

key is. Students should pay attention during video and write down at least 2

interesting facts about keys from the video.

    4. As questions as an ongoing check for understanding. Ask these questions:

What is a map key? What is a map key used for? What things do we put in a map key? Why is it important to name your map?

    5. After the video each student will take out his/her blank map and think of aplace real or imaginary that they would like to make a map of. They will come up

with a name for their map that lets others know what the map depicts. I will walk

around and approve the map idea and name.

    6. Once approved, students will begin to create a key for their map. They must

have at least 10 items in their key depicting different aspects of their land.

    9. Closure: Discuss what a map key is and the purpose it serves as well as the

importance of the name of the map.

    G. Assessment:

What will you use to measure student understanding?I will use their journal entry and individual maps to measure understanding.

    .

Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from thelesson.

Students must be able to create a key for and name a map.

    H. Reflection:

    1. Which part of the lesson do you th ink wi ll be the easiest for you to teach?I think the easiest part of the lesson will be teaching what a key is because

the students will recognize it from the lesson on symbols.

    2. Which part wil l be most challenging for you to teach? The most challenging thing to teach will be which items to include in the

    key.

    3. How will you foll ow up or extend this lesson?I will be following up this lesson by having them plot the symbols in theirkey on their maps.

    4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? I would have these students work with a peer tutor first and then if still

having trouble I would work with them personally.

    5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you th ink might need to change?I thought about making the map project a small group project but thinkthat for assessment purposes its better as an individual one.

    6. When you were wri ting this lesson plan, what was the most dif fi cult part? This lesson actually wasnt that difficult for me on paper.
