and will conclude with an activity.

    C. Student Population:

Grade Level: 2nd grade Skill Level: students at all learning levels Grouping: Whole discussions and independent for activity and assessment

    D. Materials:

Blank classroom map Journals Pencils & markers Multicolor stickers

    E. Objectives:

NV State Social Studies StandardG5.2.2 Recognize spatial patterns, i.e., political units, physical features, on a map and

    globe..

Student friendly objectives:G5.2.2- I can use different maps to recognize how and why things are placed the way

    they are.

    F. Procedure:1.

Explain: First I will explain that we will be learning about spatial patterns on maps andwhat spatial patterns are.

Call students attention to their journals and blank maps of the classroom. Identify & discuss what a spatial pattern is and how they are used to create and label

    2. As a class, we will discuss what a spatial pattern is. Using the pull down map we will find

examples of patterns and write them on the white board.

    3. Students should be following along during the discussion and should draw at least oneexample of a spatial pattern.

    4. Students will then work as individuals to create a map of their classroom. They will use thedifferent colored stickers to represent different fixtures and will write down at least one of the

    spatial patterns in their maps.

    5. Ask questions as an ongoing check for understandingFocus on these questions:

What is a spatial pattern? How are these patterns used on a map? Why are spatial patterns important when it comes to maps?

    6. Closure: Discuss key concepts of what a spatial pattern is and how they are portrayed in

    maps.

    G. Assessment:

What will you use to measure student understanding?Write a journal entry identifying at least one spatial pattern.

Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. If students are able to identify spatial patterns and why they are important I will knowthey understand.

    H. Reflection:1. Which part of the lesson do you th ink wi ll be the easiest for you to teach?

I think the easiest part of the lesson will be teaching them how spatial patternsare used on the map.

    2. Which part wil l be most challenging for you to teach? This whole lesson would be a challenge for me to teach. Im not sure I could

have told you what a spatial pattern was before I started researching it soconveying the information at this point would be very difficult.

    3. How wil l you foll ow up or extend this lesson?I could have students use a U.S. map and stickers to show patterns on a much

    larger scale.

    4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts?I would have these students work with peer tutors or if there are multiple then Iwould sit down with them and work with them as a small group.

    5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you thi nk might need to change?I like the activity part but I think something other than discussion is needed in the

    beginning.

    6. When you were writi ng thi s lesson plan, what was the most dif f icul t part?It was extremely difficult to find any books or videos on the subject that could be

    used to liven it up.
